AI Technical Summary
Existing electronic device casings make it difficult to introduce and mount printed circuit boards, especially when connection elements protrude beyond the board's edge, as they often require complex assembly and cannot be introduced simultaneously with the board.
The electronic device casing is designed with a first sidewall that is partially lower than the second sidewall, allowing the printed circuit board to be inserted horizontally, and featuring openings in the second sidewall for connecting elements, enabling easier assembly and integration of connection technology.
This design facilitates easy and automated assembly of printed circuit boards within the casing, allows for simultaneous introduction of the board and connection elements, and provides effective sealing against external influences.

Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to an electronics casing for housing a printed circuit board and to a system having an electronics casing and a printed circuit board. [Background technology]
[0002] Such an electronic device casing includes a first casing part and a second casing part that are releasably connectable to one another by form-fitting along connecting edges, and the casing parts have side walls that are contiguous with one another at their edge surfaces to form a single casing surface.
[0003] Electronics casings known from the prior art are used, for example, in appliance controls, controls in vehicles, heating and air conditioning technology, etc. Here, a printed circuit board for an embedded system or for a single board computer is often introduced into a first housing part, and connection elements connected to the printed circuit board are guided into the housing part through openings. Depending on the application, the housing is often manufactured according to the IP (Ingress Protection) protection scheme in order to protect the printed circuit board from external influences such as dust or moisture. For example, US 2019 / 0289728 A1 shows an electronics casing known from the prior art.
[0004] However, the disadvantage of the electronics housings known from the prior art is that the printed circuit board must be introduced and mounted through the opening, for example in an installation direction from above, towards the underside of the housing part, which is often designed in a bowl-shaped manner, and it is often difficult or impossible to assemble the printed circuit board with connection elements which protrude beyond the edge of the printed circuit board and which must be guided in the assembled state into the housing part through the opening.
[0005] Due to constructional conditions, openings for the connection elements often extend between the casing parts, making it difficult to effectively cover the internal space of the electronics casing from external influences. Furthermore, in many electronics casing types known from the prior art, the connection elements cannot be introduced into the electronics casing at the same time as the substrate, but must instead be introduced into openings provided for this in the electronics casing material and then attached to the substrate. [0006] [Patent Document 1] US Patent Application Publication No. 2019 / 0289728(A1) Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0007] The object of the present invention is to provide an electronics housing which allows easy introduction of a printed circuit board into the electronics housing and allows easy integration of connection technology connected to the board. Furthermore, the electronics housing to be provided should be capable of being assembled quickly, reliably and as automatically as possible. [Means for solving the problem]
[0008] This problem is solved by an object having the features of claim 1.
[0009] According to this, a first side wall of the first casing part is configured at least partially lower than a second side wall of the first casing part opposite the first side wall in order to insert the printed circuit board into the first casing part through the first side wall, and the second side wall has at least one opening for introducing a connection element connected to the printed circuit board into the opening.
[0010] The first and second casing parts may be cup-shaped and substantially complementary to one another in the assembled state to enclose the printed circuit board. Edges are understood here as "joining edges" that butt and join the first and second casing parts to one another. The "joining edges" can also be understood as "joining surfaces".
[0011] The first and second casing parts have side walls which are contiguous with each other at the edge surface and form a casing surface. The casing parts may be configured in a bowl shape and the side walls may intersect, in particular at a right angle, on the underside of each of the casing parts and may enclose a volume. The side surfaces may extend from the underside towards the free ends of the casing parts.
[0012] In the example, the underside may be configured as a rectangle. Alternatively, the underside may also be configured as a polygon, or in particular with partly rounded corner areas. The casing wall may be arranged at an angle of more than or less than 90° to the underside. The connecting edge may extend along the free edge of the side wall, where the free edge may also be configured as an edge to the boundary of the interior space of the casing part.
[0013] According to the invention, in order to insert the printed circuit board into the first casing part through the first side wall, the first side wall of the first casing part is configured at least partially lower than the second side wall of the first casing part opposite the first side wall.
[0014] The concept "configured low" here may be understood as meaning that the height of the first casing part, or the height of the first side wall from the underside of the first casing part to the connecting edge of the end of the first side wall, is at least partially lower than the height of the second side wall from the underside of the first casing part to the connecting edge of the end of the second side wall.
[0015] Thereby the printed circuit board may be inserted substantially horizontally relative to the underside of the first casing part, through the joining edge of the first side wall and up to the second side wall of the first casing part.
[0016] Furthermore, the second casing wall has at least one opening, which may be understood as a through-opening in the material of the second casing wall and which is completely surrounded by the material of the second casing wall. This opening may, for example, be pre-punched in the material of the second casing wall and passed through for the introduction of a connection element. Furthermore, an "opening" may also be understood as an opening for guiding or structuring a conductor for a printed circuit board connection.
[0017] Thereby, connection elements, such as for example electrical sockets, arranged on the printed circuit board can be introduced through the first side wall into the openings when introducing the printed circuit board, thereby making electrical contact with the outside of the electronics casing. In an example, a number of connection elements can be arranged on the printed circuit board and each can be introduced into a corresponding opening in the second side wall.
[0018] The connection elements arranged on the printed circuit board may also be understood to mean connections which are prepared on the outside of the second housing wall after the mounting of the printed circuit board. Via the connection elements, the printed circuit board can be connected or may be connected to conductors which are guided to the outside of the housing. In particular, the conductors may be configured as electrical or optical conductors for the transmission of signals, i.e. data.
[0019] Advantageously, the configuration of the first casing part described here allows easy assembly and removal of the printed circuit board by insertion into the first casing part. Advantageously, the side wall, due to its wedge shape, also provides an easy guide for easy insertion and removal of the printed circuit board. By means of the insertion, a connection to the outside of the printed circuit board can advantageously be established. Advantageously, the high structure of the second side wall also provides a very good sealing of the connection technology, since openings do not have to extend over the two casing parts but can be introduced only in the material of the first side wall.
[0020] In one example, the first casing portion has a mounting for mounting a printed circuit board within the first casing portion.
[0021] A mounting device may be understood as a fastening or positioning the printed circuit board in the first casing part, e.g. a screw or latch connection, etc., such that the printed circuit board does not move or can only move minimally relative to the first casing part, e.g. arranged in a floating state. Typically, the printed circuit board is first introduced into the first casing part and then attached by the mounting device.
[0022] In examples, the mounting device has at least one screw boss, a latch connection forming device, or a connection element for mounting the printed circuit board in the first casing part and a nut for holding the connection element and the printed circuit board connected with the connection element in the opening.
[0023] For example, a screw boss may extend from the underside, parallel to the side wall, in a corner region of the first casing part, and a region of the printed circuit board may rest on the screw boss. After the printed circuit board has been introduced, screws may be introduced through openings provided for the screws in the printed circuit board in order to fasten the printed circuit board. Advantageously, a particularly retentive mechanical connection may be established through such a screw connection.
[0024] Alternatively or additionally, the printed circuit board may be held in the first casing part by a latching connection, for example hooks or similar latching elements may be provided on the side walls for storing the printed circuit board.
[0025] Advantageously, such a latched connection can be very quickly established and released.
[0026] As a further alternative or addition to the described form of the mounting device, the mounting device may also have a nut, which fixes the connection element introduced into the opening. For example, the nut may be screwed onto the male thread of the connection element protruding from the opening, thereby fixing the connection element and the printed circuit board connected thereto. Advantageously, if a nut is used as the mounting device, the use of a further mounting device arranged on the first casing part can be omitted.
[0027] In one example, the fixture is configured to clamp and hold a printed circuit board.
[0028] By "clamping" it may be understood that the printed circuit board is held between the casing halves by at least partially forming a stand in one casing part and a corresponding lower holder, which may also be called a "dome", in the other casing part, whereby the printed circuit board is held between them after the casing parts are joined. Furthermore, holes may be provided in the printed circuit board, which allows easy holding and positioning.
[0029] In one example, third and fourth side walls disposed intersecting the first and second side walls are adapted to guide the printed circuit board as it slides between the first and second side walls.
[0030] For example, guide grooves for the printed circuit board may be arranged on the inner surfaces of the third and fourth side walls. Alternatively, the printed circuit board may simply be guided by a precisely aligned gap between the third and fourth side walls.
[0031] In one example, at least one guide element is disposed partially between the first side wall and the second side wall, and the printed circuit board is slidably moved on a guide rail of the guide element between the first side wall and the second side wall.
[0032] Guide elements may also be understood as bridge-shaped ridges, wall projections, grooves or guide surfaces which are arranged, for example, around the inner circumference of the first casing element. Alternatively or additionally, the guide element may be provided as a single bridge-shaped ridge, wall projection, groove or guide surface which partially extends between the first and second side walls. Depending on the application case, a fixed dome may also be used as guide element.
[0033] Advantageously, such a guide element further facilitates the introduction of the printed circuit board into the first housing part.
[0034] In one example, the third side wall of the first casing part and the fourth side wall opposite the third side wall border the first and second side walls at their edge surfaces and extend transversely, in particular at a right angle, to the first and second side walls, although in alternative examples these side walls may extend at other angles relative to each other.
[0035] Advantageously, the first casing part may have a rectangular shaped underside and be provided for receiving a rectangular shaped printed circuit board. Alternatively, an internal space of another size may be provided through the use of further curved side walls to suit the desired use.
[0036] In one example, the second casing part has side walls corresponding to the first casing part, forming a substantially rectangular parallelepiped electronic device casing with lower faces arranged parallel to each other.
[0037] The concept of "corresponding side walls" may be understood as meaning that in the second casing part, the first side wall is higher than the second side wall, so that the height of the first casing wall of the first casing and the height of the first casing wall of the second casing are the same as the height of the second casing wall of the first casing and the height of the second casing wall of the second casing. The two casing parts are thereby configured in a wedge shape, and by joining at the corresponding joining edges, one rectangular parallelepiped electronic device casing can be easily constructed. The casing parts may therefore be referred to as being configured complementary to each other.
[0038] Advantageously, such an electronics casing allows the printed circuit board together with the electronics arranged thereon to be stored in a small space.
[0039] In one example, the joining edge extends at least partially between the third and / or fourth side walls of the casing portion in an inclined, curved, sawtooth, stepped or stepped configuration relative to the underside of the casing.
[0040] For example, the beveled extension of the joining edge can be continuous. Advantageously, a continuous extension can increase the dimensional accuracy and the tightness. Alternatively, the beveled extension here can be discontinuous. Advantageously, such discontinuity also allows an easy joining of the casing parts and also allows the possible shear / lateral forces to be reduced through the discontinuous extension.
[0041] Advantageously, such an at least partially non-parallel extension of the joining edge between the third and fourth side walls can compensate for the relative height difference of the first side wall with respect to the second side wall with respect to the underside.
[0042] In one example, an electronic device casing has a sealing element positionable along a joining edge between a first casing portion and a second casing portion.
[0043] For example, the sealing element may be of synthetic resin material and may be shaped to accommodate the extension of the joining edge in order to be placed between the casing parts when the two casing parts are joined together. Advantageously, the placement of the sealing element provides protection against the ingress of foreign objects or water.
[0044] In one example, the first and / or second casing portion comprises an insulating material, in particular a synthetic resin material, or a metal, in particular a stainless steel, zinc die cast material, or an aluminum material.
[0045] For example, the casing part can be produced in one piece or in one integral part in a die-casting process, which advantageously allows the casing part to be made of a material designed for the intended use.
[0046] In one example, the casing part is at least partially constructed as a double wall and has at least partially overlapping areas in the region of the connecting edge, whereby advantageously in the casing part the connecting edge is at least partially constructed double, i.e. by an inner connecting edge and an outer connecting edge, which can also extend differently in the height direction relative to the underside.
[0047] This allows the casing to be made more rigid and also allows for increased clearances and creepage distances for improved insulation of the electronics arranged in the electronics casing from electrostatic voltages, which may advantageously also enable use in areas at risk of explosion.
[0048] In one example, the first casing part and the second casing part each have at least one slot, in particular four slots each, in a corner region of the casing part, where in the slot of the first casing part or the second casing part at least one connecting element, in particular a screw boss, is arranged for connecting the first and second casing parts.
[0049] The term "slot" may be understood as a cylindrical or elliptical recess that at least partially penetrates the material of the casing parts. The recess may also be understood as an opening that is configured asymmetrically with respect to at least one extension axis. The slots of the casing parts are configured correspondingly to one another, i.e. coincident, when the first and second casing parts are joined, so that the slots of the casing parts form one common slot in the joined state.
[0050] Advantageously, screw bosses arranged through the casing halves in the slots of the first and / or second casing part are respectively screwed to one another so that the casing parts are rigidly connected.
[0051] In the examples, however, as an alternative to the screw bosses, latch elements can also be arranged in the slots, thereby connecting the two casing halves to each other by a latch connection. In the examples, the electronic device casing can also be positioned on the ground by means of further mounting devices that extend at least partially through the slots.
[0052] In a further example, the electronic device casing has an assembly adapter which is adapted to be connectable with the first casing part and which on the side facing the first casing part has at least one locking element corresponding to the slots, in particular four locking elements corresponding to the four slots.
[0053] Advantageously, the respective connected casing parts can be attached via an assembly adapter to the relevant object, e.g. a wall, a support rail or a socket, etc. Furthermore, the respective connected casing parts can be connected via an assembly adapter to various types of holding elements, e.g. the mounting arrangement of a switch box or a VESA adapter, and can be connected both horizontally and vertically, e.g. by means of a mounting arrangement of an assembly rail or a pipe / pole.
[0054] In one example, the locking element comprises a latch connection and / or a screw connection.
[0055] Advantageously, the first casing part can be connected to the assembly adapter particularly quickly and easily via a latch connection, which can be secured by a screw connection, depending on the particular use, in order to ensure a secure hold. Also, in cases where a particularly secure hold is aimed at, a screw connection may be used as an alternative to the latch connection.
[0056] In one example, the first casing part and the second casing part are the same part, in particular are configured identically.
[0057] Advantageously, using casing parts of the same part can reduce manufacturing costs, for example the casing parts can be reworked to form an electronic device casing, whereby the second casing part can be used as the first casing part and the first casing part can be used as the second casing part.
[0058] In one example, the first casing part and the second casing part are respectively connected to each other by a joint, in particular a film hinge.
[0059] Advantageously, the casing parts can be held together against loss and opened via a hinge, and the casing parts can be used as intended even after the hinge is broken.
[0060] In one example, the first casing part and / or the second casing part have a further opening.
[0061] Advantageously, this further opening is configured in the shape of a window and can be used for arranging a display. Alternatively or additionally, this opening or the further opening can be used for incorporating operating elements, such as switches.
[0062] In one example, the first casing part and / or the second casing part have corresponding connection elements on the outer surfaces of opposite sides, which can be connected to at least one casing part of a further electronic device casing.
[0063] Advantageously, by using such a connecting element, a number of similar electronic device casings can be connected to each other.
[0064] The invention also relates to a system comprising an electronic device casing as described herein and a printed circuit board with at least one connection element housed within the electronic device casing.
[0065] The idea underlying the invention is explained in more detail below on the basis of an embodiment shown in the drawing. [Brief description of the drawings]

[0067] 1A shows a schematic view of a first casing part 3A and a printed circuit board 100 which is shown separately. The first casing part 3A shown has four side walls 5AA-5AD which are contiguous with one another at their edge surfaces and which constitute a casing surface of the first casing part 3A. Furthermore, the first casing part 3A shown is configured in a bowl shape, with the side walls 5AA-5AD being arranged on the underside 7 at right angles to each other.
[0068] At the ends of the side walls 5AA-5AD opposite to the ends at which they extend from the underside 7, as shown in Figures 2B-2E, a connecting edge 9 extends, at which the casing parts are separably connectable from one another by form-locking. The connecting edge 9 has an inclined, non-parallel extension in the region of the third and fourth side walls 5AC, 5AD, thereby compensating for the height difference of the first side wall 5AA relative to the second side wall 5AB.
[0069] As shown in Fig. 1A, the first side wall 5AA of the first casing part 3A is configured at least partially lower than the second side wall 5AB of the first casing part 3A opposite the first side wall 5AA, so that the printed circuit board 100 can be easily inserted into the first casing part 3A through the first side wall 5AA, as shown in the following Figs. 1B and 1C.
[0070] The printed circuit board 100 may thereby be inserted into the first casing part 3A substantially horizontally to the underside 7 of the first casing part 3A, through the joining edge 9 of the first side wall 5AA up to the second side wall 5AB.
[0071] It is also shown that the second casing wall 5AB has an opening 11, which is shown as a circular opening through the material of the second casing wall 5AB and is completely surrounded by the material of the second casing wall 5AB. A connection element 103, shown as an electrical socket, arranged on the printed circuit board 100 may be introduced through the first side wall 5AA into the opening 11 when the printed circuit board 100 is introduced (as shown in Figs. 1B and 1C) so that electrical contact can be made from there to the outside of the electronics casing. In a non-illustrated embodiment, it is also possible that multiple connection elements are arranged on the printed circuit board and each is introduced into a corresponding opening in the first side wall.
[0072] Furthermore, in Fig. 1A, the first casing part 3A has mounting devices 13A, 13B for mounting the printed circuit board 100 in the first casing part 3A. These mounting devices 13A, 13B are shown as multiple screw bosses in the illustrated embodiment, but only two mounting devices 13A, 13B are visible in Fig. 1A. The screw bosses run parallel to the side walls 5AA-5AD from the underside 7 in a corner region of the first casing part 3A, where, as shown in Fig. 2A, in the introduced state, a region of the printed circuit board 100 rests on the screw bosses 13A, 13B. After the printed circuit board has been introduced, the screws are introduced through openings provided for this purpose in the printed circuit board 100, thereby fixing the printed circuit board 100.
[0073] 1A also shows a nut 15, which is adjusted to secure the connection element 103 after the connection element is introduced into the opening 11. As shown, the connection element 103 has an external thread onto which the nut 15 can be screwed, thereby securing the connection element 103 and the printed circuit board 100 connected thereto.
[0074] It is also shown that a guide element 17 is arranged at least partially between the first side wall 5AA and the second side wall 5AB in order to slide the printed circuit board 100 on the guide rails of the guide element 17 between the first side wall 5AA and the second side wall 5AB. Furthermore, in Fig. 1A a holding device 19 is shown, which is arranged as a protrusion above the guide element 17 on the second side wall 5AB. As shown in Fig. 2A, in the introduced state, the printed circuit board 100 is held between the guide element 17 and the holding device 19.
[0075] Also in FIG. 1A it is shown that the first casing part 3A is at least partially constructed of a double wall.
[0076] The first casing part 3A further has connecting elements 21A-21D which are configured as screw bosses and which connect the illustrated first casing part 3A with a second casing part, as illustrated in Figures 2A-2E.
[0077] FIG. 1B shows the first casing part 3A and the printed circuit board 100 as shown in FIG. 1A. In FIG. 1B, the printed circuit board 100 is shown being introduced into the casing 3A. Here, the printed circuit board 100 is inserted through the lower first side wall 5AA of the first casing part 3A. In FIG. 1C, the printed circuit board 100 is further introduced in the direction of the first side wall 5AA, so that the connection element 103 is already in the opening 11. In FIG. 1C, it is shown that the printed circuit board 100 is not inserted completely horizontally through the first side wall 5AA to the underside, but is slightly inclined, usually at an angle of 5° to 15°, to the underside of the first casing part 3A. The printed circuit board 100 is placed on the guide element 17 shown in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B and is further slidably moved on the guide element 17 in the direction of the second side wall 5AB.
[0078] FIG. 2A shows a schematic view of an electronic device casing 1 and a printed circuit board 100 disposed therein according to the embodiment of the invention previously illustrated in FIGS. 1A-1C.
[0079] In the view shown in Figure 2A, a printed circuit board 100 is placed on mounting devices 13A, 13B, which were shown as screw bosses in Figures 1A and 1B. Openings in the printed circuit board 100 allow the screw bosses to be introduced into the printed circuit board 100 and secure the printed circuit board 100 between the side walls 5AA-5AD in the first casing part 3A.
[0080] As shown, the first casing part 3A and the second casing part 3B are configured substantially complementary to one another, so that during joining they butt against one another on a joining edge 9. The two casing parts 3A, 3B shown are configured in a wedge shape and form a rectangular parallelepiped electronic device casing 1, which is illustrated in the following figures.
[0081] In the illustrated embodiment, the first casing part 3A and the second casing part 3B each have four slots 23AA-23BD in the corner regions of the casing parts 3A, 3B. In the slots 23AA-23AD of the first casing part 3A, connecting elements 21A-21D illustrated as screw bosses are arranged for connecting the first and second casing parts 3A, 3B. The illustrated slots 23AA-23BD extend correspondingly relative to one another, so that in the joined state the slots in the casing parts 3A, 3B form one common slot.
[0082] In Figures 2B and 2C, the electronic device casing 1 shown in Figure 2A is shown in a joined state, with the casing parts 3A, 3B being separably joined from one another by form-fitting along a joining edge 9.
[0083] In Figures 2D and 2E further schematic views of the electronics casing 1 shown in Figures 2A-2C are shown. Figures 2D and 2E show schematic views of the outer side of the underside 7 of the first casing part 3A. By means of this underside the electronics casing 1 can be mounted directly on the ground or on an assembly adapter. The assembly adapter can here have locking elements which correspond to the elongated holes 21AA-21AD for attaching the electronics casing 1 to the assembly adapter, which are shown in the following Figures 3A, 3B.
[0084] Fig. 3A shows the first and second casing parts 3A, 3B and an assembly adapter 200 according to an embodiment of the invention. The assembly adapter 200 is here configured for example to be mounted on a bar and to be connectable with the first casing part 3A. Here, locking elements 221A-221D are arranged on the assembly adapter 200, which correspond to the ends of the elongated holes 21AA-21AD shown in Fig. 2E, thereby forming a latching connection when the first casing part 3A is placed on the assembly adapter 200.
[0085] 3B shows a schematic view of the first casing part 3A resting on the mounting adapter 200. It also shows that the connecting element 103 is connected with a corresponding connecting cable.
[0086] Fig. 4A shows a cross-sectional view of the locking element 221A of the assembly adapter 200, introduced into the slot 21AA of the first casing half 3A. The locking element 221A forms a latching connection together with the area of the slot 21AA as shown. In Fig. 4B, the schematic view shown from Fig. 4A, a screw is additionally introduced into the locking element 221A, which prevents unintentional release of the latching connection.
