A protective case for an electronic device includes a main housing and a lid. The main housing and lid are removably joined to define a water tight volume receiving an electronic device. A MEMS device may be formed in a hermetic cavity by sealing a pair of semiconductor structures to one another, enclosing the MEMS device. The two structures may be coupled using surface mount techniques as one example, so that the temperatures utilized may be compatible with many MEMS applications. Electrical interconnection layers in one or the other of these structures may be utilized to allow electrical interconnections from the exterior world to the MEMS components within the cavity.

An axial force mechanism can be used to aid in rotating the front housing to an open position. A locking collar, support member, or axial locking member may be used to ensure that the front housing remains open. A removable front glass assembly or removable glass panel may be used with an exemplary embodiment. The front glass assembly or glass panel can be easily replaced if it becomes damaged by minimally-trained personnel. Gutters may be used between the front and rear housing as well as the front housing and front glass assembly to ensure an adequate seal against contaminates.

A second gasket is formed to be integral with the second cover and has a first projection portion. The first projection portion protrudes to have a height greater than a depth of the receiving groove when the first cover and the second cover are separate, and the first projection portion is compressed and deformed to be in contact with a plurality of surfaces inside the receiving groove when the first cover and the second cover are coupled with each other.

A data storage device includes a housing in which is mounted a data storage unit, such as a hard disk drive. Pads serve as shock mounts at the corners of the data storage unit and separate the data storage unit and the housing. A flex circuit electrically couples the data storage unit and a connector at the front of the device. The data storage device may convert the number of pin connections from the data storage unit to a different number of pin connections. A docking module that receives the portable data storage device may also convert the number of pin connections from the data storage device to a different number of pin connections used by a host system. The docking module includes a slide for receiving and ejecting the portable data storage device.
