Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a photoprotective personal care composition that provides a high sun protection factor (SPF). Specifically, the present invention relates to a high-SPF gel composition that provides very good sensory properties expected by consumers when such a composition is applied to the skin, such as low oiliness and good stretchability.

Background Art

[0002] Solar radiation contains about 5% ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the wavelength of which is between 200 nm and 400 nm. This is further divided into three regions: 320 - 400 nm (UV-A), 280 - 320 nm (UV-B), and 200 - 280 nm (UV-C). A significant portion of UV-C radiation is absorbed by ozone. Scientific studies have shown that short-term exposure to UV-A and UV-B radiation can cause pigmentation, skin redness, and local inflammation, while continuous or long-term exposure can lead to sunburn, melanoma, wrinkle formation, and bruising. UV radiation is also thought to cause significant damage to hair. Therefore, it is desirable to protect the human skin and other keratinous substrates from the harmful effects of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. This is provided by cosmetic compositions that provide a high SPF (sun protection factor).

[0003] Various cosmetics for preventing and / or protecting the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays have been reported. In the field of cosmetics, a number of organic sunscreens capable of absorbing UV-A rays have been reported, among which a particularly useful sunscreen is t-butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane (known as avobenzone and sold as Parsol® 1789). Various UV-B sunscreens are used in personal care compositions for protection from UV-B rays. Many cosmetic manufacturers prefer to include both UV-A and UV-B sunscreens in their photoprotective compositions to provide protection over the entire range of UV light.

[0004] One such patent by the present applicant is published as EP2575748B1, which discloses a composition providing a high SPF. This publication only discloses the use of certain oil-soluble sunscreens. Due to the emergence of many water-soluble sunscreens, the inventors experimented with combinations of oil-soluble and water-soluble sunscreens to achieve a better SPF. They also wanted to achieve a high SPF through a gel-type composition that is generally preferred by many consumers because when such a composition is applied to the skin, it is light, less greasy, and gives a pleasant skin feel. When realizing the advantage of high SPF through a composition containing both oil-soluble and water-soluble sunscreens, the inventors found that it is difficult to stabilize them in such a gel composition when the water-soluble sunscreens (usually added in the form of salts) are included, that is, it is difficult to provide a stable gel composition containing water-soluble sunscreens. Therefore, the inventors not only had to stabilize the water-soluble sunscreens while ensuring the desired high SPF, but also had to provide the desired tactile properties such as low oiliness and good spreadability. Through extensive experiments, the inventors were able to ensure the achievement of the desired high SPF and the desired sunscreen stability by including selected aqueous phase thickeners, certain types of oil phase thickeners, and certain humectants in the sunscreen.

Summary of the Invention

Problems to be Solved by the Invention

[0005] However, it has been found that the composition prepared in this way is inferior in terms of feel. Being excellent in terms of feel means that the composition gives the skin an excellent moisturizing feeling without being too oily. In other words, consumers expect to give moisture to the skin while enjoying a non-greasy (not oily) appearance. Furthermore, consumers also expect other properties such as ease of stretching and a mild, gentle and non-sticky feel on the skin. The inventors have confirmed that by incorporating a specific feel modifier, the above-mentioned desirable feel can be achieved. The high SPF thus achieved has been confirmed to prevent the skin from darkening and reduce spots and darkening.

[0006] Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a gel-form photoprotective personal care composition containing a sunscreen that is either oil-soluble or water-soluble, which not only provides a high SPF but also gives a light, non-greasy and non-sticky feel when applied to the skin. Another object of the present invention is to provide such a photoprotective personal care composition that is a stable gel composition.

It is preferred that the composition contains both UVA and UVB water-soluble sunscreens. Most preferably, it contains either or both of 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid and disodium phenyl dibenzimidazole tetrasulfonate.

[0021] Water-soluble sunscreen agents for inclusion in the compositions of the present invention are generally commercially available in acid form. When included in a composition having an acid form (pre-neutralized form), i.e., a composition having a sulfonic acid group (-SO 3 H), the composition further contains a neutralizing agent for converting the acid form to a salt form, in which form it is known to be active as a sunscreen agent, except for Mexoryl SX which can act as a sunscreen agent regardless of neutralization. When included, the neutralizing agent is preferably 0.05 to 4% by weight, preferably 0.2% to 2% by weight, of the composition. As the neutralizing agent, an inorganic alkali or an organic alkali is preferred. As the organic alkali, amines such as triethanolamine or diethanolamine are preferred. The inventors have observed that inorganic alkalis are particularly preferred. Alkali metal hydroxides are preferred. The most preferred metal hydroxides for inclusion as a neutralizing agent in the compositions of the present invention are sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. It is a particularly difficult problem to obtain the desired SPF improvement and the desired tactile sensory properties while stabilizing the salt form of the water-soluble sunscreen in the gel composition. The inventors have solved this problem by specifically selecting the claimed features (iii) to (vi) of the present invention, namely the aqueous phase thickener, the oil phase thickener, the humectant and the sensory modifier.

In this test, a 70×70 mm PMMA plate with a roughness of approximately 6 μm manufactured by Schoenberg GmbH&Co was used. The transmittance percentage of various compositions was measured using the procedure outlined below. A 2 mg / cm 2 sample was applied to the PMMA plate, distributed uniformly using a syringe, and spread evenly. The drying time of the PMMA plate was 30 minutes. After the drying time, the sample plate was exposed to UV light and a transmittance scan was recorded. From this scan, the transmittance as a function of wavelength (290 - 400 nm) for a particular sample was obtained. For one plate, 6 - 9 different spots were scanned. The same was repeated for 2 or 3 plates. Thus, the reported data is the average of 12 - 18 readings. A reference transmittance scan was obtained using a blank plate with no sample placed on a PMMA plate coated with glycerin. Using the transmittance values, the SPF value was obtained using the UV - 2000s application attached to the instrument.

[0054] The percentage of transmittance (and thus SPF) was measured as the in - vitro SPF at zero time (line 0 minutes). The same plate was exposed to light simulating sunlight, and the % transmittance was measured at specified time intervals from 0 - 60 minutes. The average absorbance at 310 nm and 355 nm was recorded to measure the % UVB and UVA light stability, respectively. The UV was generated using a solar simulator (Atlas kW system) with an irradiance of 550 Wm -2 at a distance of approximately 20 cm.

[0055] The SPF values and UVAPF values are summarized in Table 2 below.

[0056] Table - 2:

Table 2

[0057] The data in Table 2 above show that the SPF value and UVAPF value are much lower in the composition outside the present invention (Example A) that does not contain a sensory regulator than in the compositions within the present invention (Examples 1 to 3) that contain different combinations of sensory regulators in various amounts.

[0058] Differences in sensory benefits upon use of various compositions: For the compositions according to the present invention (Examples 1 to 3), the following procedure was used to investigate the differences in the sensory effects they provide.

[0059] This test was conducted on a total of 50 female subjects. The subjects participated in a product use test to evaluate the tactile performance of the test products. Each product was evaluated for 5 days. This study had a sequential monadic design. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain digital feedback to understand product preferences such as the absence of skin color unevenness, fairer / brighter skin, glow, sweating, comfort and freshness, the feel of the face after application (oily / sticky / greasy), sun protection, matte feel, spreadability, speed of absorption, light feel, moisturization, stickiness, peeling, etc.

[0060] Each panelist evaluated the samples over 5 days. The overall preference for the samples is summarized in Table 3 below.

[0061] Table - 3:

Table 3

[0062] The data in Table - 3 above show that the composition of Example 1 is the most preferred, followed by Example 2, and then Example - 3 in that order.

[0063] The data shows that the composition according to Example 1, which contains a large amount (2%) of the oil-phase thickener (Syncrowax HGLC) and 1.5% of silica microspheres (MSS-500 / 3H) and 1% of a polymer (DC9701) as a sensory modifier, is more preferable than Example 2, which contains a small amount (1%) of the oil-phase thickener, the same amount of silica microspheres, and a large amount (2%) of the polymer. Example 3 further contains starch-based sensory modifiers (Natrasorb HFB and Dry Flo pure) and is the least preferable compared to Example 1.

[0064] In terms of qualitative characteristics, all samples (Examples 1 to 3) were highly evaluated for spreadability, rapid absorption, light touch, and high moisturizing properties.

[0065] Examples 1 and 2 were significantly superior to Example 3 in terms of uniform skin color, brighter skin, shine, sweating, and comfort and freshness.

[0066] Example 1 was significantly superior to Example 3 in terms of the feel on the face after application (oily / greasy / fatty), sun protection, duration, protection from sunlight, ultra-matte feel, and oil-free appearance, but was equivalent to Example 2.

[0067] The summarized data shows that all three examples (Examples 1 to 3) according to the present invention are significantly superior to the control samples in sun protection. In the sensory area, Example 1 was the most preferred, followed by Example 2 and Example 3.

[0068] Furthermore, Example B as shown in Table 4 below was prepared, and SPF and UVAPF were measured as described above.

[0069] Table 4

Table 4

[0070] The obtained SPF values and UVAPF values were summarized in Table 5 below.

[0071] Table 5

Table 5

[0072] The data in Table 5 above showed that in the absence of an oil phase thickener, the SPF and UVAPF were much lower than those provided by the compositions of the present invention containing an oil phase thickener (Examples 1 to 3). Also, since this composition showed phase separation after incubation at 45 °C for 3 weeks, it became an unstable composition.

[0073] Furthermore, the compositions according to the present invention shown in Table 6 below (Examples 4 and 5) and comparative compositions (Example C) were prepared, and the SPF, UVAPF and stability of these compositions were measured.

[0074] Table 6

Table 6

[0075] Table 7

Table 7

[0076] The data in Table 7 above showed that when using the oil phase thickener according to the present invention, i.e., the ester of C18 - C36 fatty acids (syncrowax HGLC), a stable gel composition providing high SPF and UVAPF was obtained (Example 4). The data further showed that when using another type of oil phase thickener according to the present invention, i.e., a polymeric oil phase thickener (sorbitol / sebacic acid copolymer behenate, available as Syncrowax® ORM (Example 5)), a stable gel composition with high SPF and UVAPF was obtained. Finally, the data also showed that when using an oil phase thickener not according to the present invention, i.e., carnauba wax and rice bran wax (Sunhancer™ Eco SPF Booster shown in Example D), an unstable composition was obtained.
