DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0011] Unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing feature sizes, quantities, and physical properties used in the specification and claims are to be understood as being modified in all instances by the term "about." Accordingly, unless indicated to the contrary, the numerical parameters set forth in the foregoing specification and appended claims are approximations that may vary depending upon the desired properties one of ordinary skill in the art would obtain utilizing the teachings disclosed herein. The use of numerical ranges by endpoints includes all numbers within that range (e.g., 1 to 5 includes 1, 1.5, 2, 2.75, 3, 3.80, 4, and 5) and any range within that range.

[0012] As used in this specification and the appended claims, the singular forms "a," "an," and "the" include embodiments having plural referents unless the content clearly dictates otherwise. As used in this specification and the appended claims, the term "or" is used in its general sense including "and / or" unless the content clearly dictates otherwise.

[0013] Spatial terms, including but not limited to "lower," "upper," "below," "lower," "above," and "above," when used herein, are utilized for ease of description to describe the spatial relationship of one element to another. Such spatial terms encompass various orientations of the device in use or operation in addition to the specific orientations shown in the figures and described herein. For example, if an object depicted in a figure is turned over or inverted, portions previously described as below or beneath other elements will now be above those other elements.

[0014] As used herein, when an element, component, or layer is described as, e.g., "on", "connected to", "bonded to", or "in contact with" another element, component, or layer, it is possible, for example, that the element, component, or layer is directly on, connected to, bonded to, or in direct contact with the particular element, component, or layer, or it is possible that intervening elements, components, or layers are on, connected to, bonded to, or in contact with the particular element, component, or layer. When an element, component, or layer is referred to, for example, as being "directly on", "directly connected to", "directly bonded to", or "in direct contact with" another element, there are, for example, no intervening elements, components, or layers present.

[0015] There is often a need for articles with adjustable stiffness and variable resistance to motion. For example, flexible displays can bend and maintain a bent position. At least some embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to electrostatic jamming devices that generate controlled resistance to motion. Such jamming devices can be incorporated into a variety of devices, systems, and structures to resist various motions, such as bending motions, translations, rotations, etc. The motions can be primarily planar or along or within a surface.

[0016] In some cases, the sheet of material may be held together by a vacuum to resist movement. In some cases, the sheet of material may be held together by static electricity, eliminating the need for a vacuum source and a gas impermeable envelope. Conventional electrostatic jamming devices have several limitations. Some devices only allow simple bending of the sheet, which can only be molded into a developable surface (or a smooth surface with zero Gaussian curvature). Conventional devices tend to be difficult to build, as they only function at high voltages.

[0017] At least some embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to jamming devices that can be used to allow bending in one state and resist bending in another state. In some embodiments, the jamming device includes multiple sheets that can be electrostatically pinned and resist motion. Such jamming devices include conductive layers and dielectric layers disposed between adjacent conductive layers. At least some embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to electrostatic jamming devices that can operate at low voltages and still achieve a useful level of motion resistance. Low voltage refers to a voltage that is lower than the breakdown voltage of air for the smallest distance between any two oppositely charged conductive layers. Some existing jamming devices include a dielectric layer that extends far beyond the conductive layer to make the shortest path through air between two oppositely charged conductors much longer than the path through the dielectric layer. This makes such jamming devices more difficult to manufacture and more susceptible to pinholes or cracks in the dielectric layer, because it creates a distance between the oppositely charged conductors that allows air to break down (short circuit and arcing). Some embodiments of the jamming devices in the present disclosure are not susceptible to short circuits or arcing despite cracks, gaps, pinholes, and other defects in the dielectric layer. In some embodiments, the conductive layer is held at or beyond the thickness of the dielectric layer, and the jamming device is operated at a voltage lower than the breakdown voltage of air at that distance. In some cases, low-voltage jamming devices have the advantage of storing much less energy in the device and being safer for use on and near the human body.

[0018] Breakdown voltage refers to the voltage that causes air to break down and become conductive across a gap of a given distance between two conductors. This is also known as an arc or spark discharge across the gap. Breakdown voltage varies with pressure. This disclosure generally refers to the breakdown voltage of air within the range of standard pressures found on Earth. In this disclosure, breakdown voltage refers to the shortest distance through air (and no other dielectric material) between any two conductors that are not intentionally electrically connected. In this disclosure, the value of breakdown voltage at a given distance and pressure has been well studied for many years and it is generally recognized that Paschen's law is obeyed for gaps greater than a few micrometers, but that there are deviations from that law for smaller gaps. The breakdown voltage can be determined using the simplified formula proposed by Babrauskas and Vytenis, “Arc Breakdown in Air over Very Small Gap Distances” (Interfolam 2013, Volume 2, pp. 1489-1498), as presented in the following formula (1):

[0019] The clamped state is used to describe a state where relative motion between two adjacent parts, sheets, or structures is resisted by the introduction of an external pressure that presses them together. Relative motion refers to sliding, rotational, or translational motion between two adjacent parts, sheets, or structures in a jamming device. There is a spectrum of "clamping" strengths where different forces are required to overcome the resistance to motion. The external pressure that causes the clamping state can come from a mechanical source, or from the application of a vacuum (whereby atmospheric pressure presses the sheets together), electrostatic attraction between the sheets, etc. The unclamped state, also referred to as the relaxed state, is used to describe a state where no additional resistance is provided to the relative motion between adjacent sheets.

[0020] FIG. 1A shows a top view of an embodiment of the segmented jamming device 100, FIG. 1B shows a side view of the jamming device 100, FIG. 1C shows a top view of one rotational position of the jamming device 100, and FIG. 1D shows a top view of another rotational position of the jamming device 100. The segmented jamming device 100 includes a set of chains 105 including at least one chain 110. In some embodiments, as shown in FIG. 1B, the set of chains 105 includes a chain 110, a chain 120, and a chain 130. In some embodiments, the chain (e.g., 110) includes a series of connected segments (e.g., 112, 114). In some embodiments, two adjacent segments 112 and 114 are connected via a joint 115. In some embodiments, as shown in FIG. 1C and FIG. 1D, the two adjacent segments 112 and 114 are rotatable relative to each other in a first state when a rotational force is applied. In some embodiments, the two adjacent segments remain at a fixed angle in the second state when a rotational force is applied.

[0021] In some embodiments, the set of chains includes two or more chains (e.g., 110, 120, and 130) arranged in a stacked configuration. In some cases, the two or more chains (e.g., 110, 120, and 130) are stacked via connection by one or more joints (e.g., 115) on the two or more chains.

[0022] In some cases, each segment (e.g., 112, 114) includes multiple sheets, and each sheet may include multiple layers. In some embodiments, each segment is composed of a single material, such as paper, a metal (e.g., steel, aluminum) that can be annealed to enhance malleability, a polymeric material (e.g., acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or polyoxymethylene), a composite material (e.g., carbon fiber), or other similar suitable materials, and combinations thereof. In some cases, each segment has a structural layer, one or more conductive layers, and one or more dielectric layers. The conductive layers of the stack of segments in the jamming device can be electrically connected via wires, mechanical clamps, conductive adhesives, or other suitable means.

[0023] In some cases, the joint 115 is a rotary joint or a pin joint. A rotary joint can be created by a pin, rivet, wire, thread, or other means that penetrates an open area of one or more jamming layers on the segments to be connected. Other types of joints can also be used. For example, a pin-in-slot joint can be realized by changing the shape of the holes on some segments. A linear sliding joint can also be created by combining two pin-in-slot joints or by adding an external guide of the segment.

[0024] FIG. 2A shows an embodiment of a jamming device 200 used in a vacuum state. In some cases, the jamming device 200 includes a segmented jamming device 210 and an envelope (or shell or pouch) 202. The envelope 202 defines an internal chamber 204. The envelope 202 is formed of a gas-impermeable material. A port 215 is disposed to fluidly connect the chamber 204 to the surroundings, through which the chamber 204 can be evacuated, for example, by being coupled to a vacuum source 220 via a tube 222. The segmented jamming device 210 is disposed within the chamber 204. In some cases, the segmented jamming device 210 includes one or more chains 212. In some cases, each chain 212 includes two or more connected segments 213.

[0025] For clarity, the upper and lower surfaces of the envelope 202 are shown substantially spaced apart in FIG. 2A (i.e., with the sidewalls joining them). Similarly, the chains 212 are shown substantially spaced apart from one another. In some cases, the chains 212 can be in close proximity to one another. In some cases, the jamming device 200 can be much flatter in appearance, having a sheet-like or plate-like configuration.

[0026] In some embodiments, the jamming device 200 is in a relaxed state when the pressure inside the envelope 202 is approximately ambient pressure, and is in a locked state when the pressure inside the envelope is lower than ambient pressure.

[0027] In some cases, the segments in the segmented jamming device include electrostatic sheets. FIG. 2B is a schematic cross-sectional view of a section of the jamming device 200B with a set of chains. In the illustrated embodiment, the jamming device 200B includes a set of interdigitated first chains 210B and a set of second chains 220B. Each set of chains has at least two segments. In some cases, two adjacent segments are connected by a joint 240B. In some embodiments, the sets of chains of the jamming device 200B are stacked on top of each other, and the joints 240B that penetrate the stack of chains are combined together. In some cases, each segment of the set of first chains 210B includes a conductive layer 211B. In some cases, each segment of the second chain 220B includes a conductive layer 211B. In some cases, each segment of the jamming device 200B further includes a dielectric layer 230B.

[0028] In some embodiments, the jamming device 200B includes a first connector (not shown) that is conductively coupled to the conductive layer 211B of at least some of the segments of the set of the first chain 210B and / or the conductive layer 211B of at least some of the segments of the set of the second chain 220B. In some cases, the jamming device 200B includes a second connector (not shown) that is conductively coupled to the conductive layer 211B of at least some of the segments of the set of the first chain 210B and / or the conductive layer 211B of at least some of the segments of the set of the second chain 220B. In some implementations, the first connector is conductively coupled to the conductive layer 211B of every other segment of the set of the first chain 210B and the set of the second chain 220B, and the second connector is conductively coupled to the conductive layer of the segments of the set of the first chain 210B and the set of the second chain 220B between every other segment that is coupled to the first connector. In some embodiments, the first connector is conductively coupled to the conductive layer 211B of the segment of the set of the first chain 210B, and the second connector is conductively coupled to the conductive layer 211B of the segment of the set of the second chain 220B.

[0029] In some cases, the first set of chains 210B and the second set of chains 220B are movable relative to each other in the relaxed state, and the first set of chains 210B and the second set of chains 220B are fixed to each other in the fixed state. In some cases, the fixed state is caused when a voltage of 50V or less is applied between the first connector and the second connector. In some cases, the fixed state is caused when a voltage of 100V or less is applied between the first connector and the second connector. In some cases, the fixed state is caused when a voltage of 200V or less is applied. In some cases, the fixed state is caused when a voltage of less than or equal to the breakdown voltage of air at a distance between adjacent conductive layers of one of the first set of chains and one of the second set of chains is applied between the first connector and the second connector.

[0030] In some cases, each of the dielectric layers is extremely thin. In some cases, the thickness of each of the dielectric layers is 10 micrometers or less. In some cases, the thickness of each of the dielectric layers is 5 micrometers or less. In some cases, the thickness of each of the dielectric layers is 1 micrometer or less. In some cases, the distance between adjacent pairs of conductive layers of adjacent chains in the relaxed state is 10 micrometers or less. In some cases, the distance between adjacent pairs of conductive layers of adjacent chains in the relaxed state is 5 micrometers or less.

[0031] In some embodiments, the conductive layer 211B may include a metal (e.g., copper, aluminum, steel) that can be annealed or hardened, a laminated metal layer or foil (e.g., of the same or different metals), a conductive polymer, or a material filled with conductive particles such as carbon. In some embodiments, the chains (210B, 220B) may include a support layer. The support layer may be made of paper or other fibrous material, a polymeric material (e.g., polyurethane, polyolefin), a composite material (e.g., carbon fiber), an elastomer (e.g., silicone, styrene-butadiene-styrene), or other materials, and combinations thereof. In some cases, the support layer has a thickness of 50 micrometers or more. In some cases, the support layer has a thickness of 125 micrometers or more. In some cases, the support layer and the conductive layer may be combined into one layer. In some cases, the conductive layer 211B is a coating on the structural layer of the segments of the first set of chains 210B and / or the second set of chains 220B. The conductive coating material can be, for example, copper, aluminum, silver, nickel, indium tin oxide, carbon, graphite, etc. In some embodiments, the dielectric layer can include silicon oxide, aluminum oxide, titanium oxide, mixed metal oxide, mixed metal nitride, barium titanate, or a polymer, such as polyimide, acrylate, etc. In some cases, the dielectric layer can be a dielectric film. In some cases, the dielectric layer 230B is coated on the segments of the set of first chains 210B and / or the set of second chains 220B. The coating material can include silicon oxide, aluminum oxide, titanium oxide, mixed metal oxide, mixed metal nitride, barium titanate, or a polymer, such as polyimide, acrylate, etc.

[0032] In some cases, the dielectric layer 230B is extremely thin. In some cases, the dielectric layer 230B has a thickness of 10 micrometers or less. In some cases, the dielectric layer 230B has a thickness of 5 micrometers or less. In some cases, the dielectric layer 230B has a thickness of 1 micrometer or less. In some cases, the jamming device is fixed by a low voltage. In some cases, this low voltage is 100V or less. In some cases, such a voltage is less than or equal to the breakdown voltage of the distance between the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer.

[0033] Electrostatic clamping can be understood by modeling each set of oppositely charged adjacent conductive layers with a dielectric material between them as a parallel plate capacitor. The opposite charges on the layers attract each other. This attractive force can be shown to produce a compressive pressure on the dielectric material, which can be expressed by equation (2).

[0034] In some cases, the total thickness of the dielectric material may include one or more layers of dielectric material and may also include some voids or debris trapped between the conductive layers. When multiple dielectric layers are present (including multiple films, coatings, air, debris, etc.), they can be modeled in series. In this case, each layer contributes a capacitance

[0035] Electrostatic clamping allows both translational and rotational sliding motion between oppositely charged conductive layers. A sliding interface can exist between a conductive layer and a dielectric layer, or between a dielectric layer and another dielectric layer. There can be more than one slidable interface between two adjacent oppositely charged conductive layers. When a voltage is applied, the resulting pressure forces the surfaces of the slidable interfaces against each other, resisting motion. The resistance to motion can be modeled by considering two interdigitated sets of chains clamped together. The resistance to sliding two electrostatically clamped sets of identical chains apart can be calculated as equation (5):

number

[0036] It is desirable to have a large clamping pressure capable of resisting large forces. For many applications, it is desirable to utilize very low voltages, which increases safety and reduces the cost and energy consumption of the control electronics. Clamping performance (i.e., clamping pressure) at very low voltages can be improved by increasing the relative permittivity of the dielectric layer and by reducing the distance between the conductive layers, according to equation (2). Using very thin dielectric layers, such as a few micrometers or even less than 1 micrometer, can enable large clamping pressures at very low voltage levels. For example, the International Electrotechnical Commission defines very low voltage devices as not exceeding 220V DC. Other standards in the UK and the US define very low voltage systems as not exceeding 75V DC or 60V DC. Based on the calculations above, if the total thickness of the dielectric layers is about 4.4 micrometers (assuming an average relative permittivity of 3), a pressure of about 10% of atmospheric pressure can be achieved at 220V. One of the challenges of very low voltage electrostatic clamping is that the clamping pressure is reduced by the square of the distance between adjacent oppositely charged conductive layers. If debris or large air gaps are present at the slidable interface between the conductive layers, the clamping pressure may become too low to achieve useful resistance to motion or even draw the layers together. For example, if the above 4.4 micrometer distance is increased to about 9.6 micrometers by adding an air gap of 5.2 micrometers, only 1% of atmospheric pressure is achieved at 220V. Therefore, a small dielectric distance is required for adequate clamping pressure for jamming devices to operate at low voltages. Moreover, air gaps not only increase the total dielectric distance but also reduce the average relative dielectric constant, which causes an even greater reduction in clamping pressure according to the above formula. Some embodiments of the present disclosure enable clamping at very low voltages by using extremely thin dielectric layers and introducing biasing means that draw the chains together to reduce the air gap.

[0037] In some cases, the jamming device 200B includes other elements. The jamming device 200B includes one or more biasing elements configured to keep the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer close to each other. In some cases, the one or more biasing elements are enclosures within which the chain of jamming devices 200B is placed. In some cases, the one or more biasing elements can be joints 240B. In some cases, the biasing elements are spring elements, such as foam or elastic layers, that exert a small pressure on the layers so that they are close enough to maintain light contact and then be fixed together by application of a voltage. In some cases, the gap between the conductive layers is completely filled with a dielectric material and only a minimal amount of air or other material.

[0038] In some cases, the dielectric layer 230B covers less than one hundred percent (100%) of the surface of the segments of the set of the first chains 210B and / or the set of the second chains 220B. In other words, the jamming device 200B has an exposed conductive layer 211B whose edges are not covered with a dielectric material on a portion or the entire surface of the chains 200B. The exposed conductive layer can facilitate electrical connections. In some cases, the dielectric layer 230B covers less than eighty percent (80%) of the surface of the segments of the set of the first chains 210B and / or the set of the second chains 220B. In some cases, the dielectric layer 230B covers less than sixty percent (60%) of the surface of the segments of the set of the first chains 210B and / or the set of the second chains 220B. One challenge with electrostatic jamming devices is to protect them from electrical insulation (or dielectric) breakdown of air. Some existing electrostatic jamming devices have used high voltages of hundreds to thousands of volts. This requires that the jamming device include a continuous dielectric layer that extends far beyond the conductive layers, such that the shortest path between conductive layers in air is many times longer than the path between conductive layers through the dielectric layer. This is because the dielectric strength of air at most voltages is only 3 MV / m, while many dielectric materials (such as polyethylene or polyimide) have dielectric strengths of 100 MV / m or more. Some embodiments of the present disclosure solve this problem by allowing useful clamping pressures at field strengths lower than the dielectric breakdown strength of air. An additional benefit is obtained from the fact that the dielectric breakdown strength of actual air increases significantly, especially at small gap distances, less than 10 micrometers. By operating at voltages lower than the dielectric breakdown voltage of air, some embodiments of the present disclosure enable a low-cost, efficient manufacturing method capable of producing large master rolls of material. These rolls may include a structural layer, one or more conductive layers, and one or more dielectric layers. These rolls of material can then be cut into many smaller segments of any shape, electrically connected, and mechanically constrained as described below, and assembled into finished products including open and closed chains of segments. Because electrostatic chain jamming devices are operated at voltages lower than the breakdown voltage of the air in the thickness of the dielectric material between adjacent oppositely charged conductive layers, such jamming devices are protected from electrical breakdown of the air, which may manifest as electrical arcing and cause melting or burning of the material. Another advantage of some embodiments of the present disclosure is that they are not susceptible to small pinholes or cuts or other defects in the dielectric layers. At high voltages, even small pinholes can cause electrical arcing. Some embodiments of the present disclosure not only allow for cutting the perimeter of the jamming chain without having an extended dielectric layer, but also allow for cutting the jamming chain into complex patterns that improve the conformability of the chain and allow for other advantages described below.

[0039] In some cases, the jamming device 200B may include only one chain. In some embodiments, the jamming device 200B may include multiple chains. In some cases, the chain segments may be solid or may be patterned with cuts, for example to improve the flexibility (bending) and / or stretchability of the chain. In some embodiments, the chain segments have cuts patterned to increase flexibility along one or two axes, but have a desired stiffness along a third axis. In some embodiments, the chain segments have patterns cut into them to allow the segments to stretch along one or two axes, or to allow regions of the chain segments to move in a plane or along a surface relative to other regions. The patterns can be formed by a variety of methods, including but not limited to punch die cutting, extrusion, molding, laser cutting, water jet, machining, stereolithography or other 3D printing, laser ablation, photolithography, chemical etching, rotary die cutting, stamping, other suitable negative or positive processing techniques, or combinations thereof. The solid and patterned chains of the present disclosure can be of single or multi-layer construction and can be formed of a variety of materials and layers of materials as described above.

[0040] The conductive and dielectric layers may have various arrangements. One exemplary arrangement of the jamming device 200C is shown in FIG. 2C, where each of the conductive layers 211C is sandwiched between two dielectric layers 230C. In this arrangement, a slidable interface exists between the two dielectric layers in the unlocked state, and the total dielectric thickness includes the thickness of the two dielectric layers 230C, and each dielectric layer 230C may have a characteristic thickness and possibly a gap. In some cases, this multi-layer structure can be built by stacking or layering. In some cases, the conductive layer is coated or deposited (e.g., chemical vapor deposition or physical vapor deposition) on the core layer. In some cases, the core layer provides structural support. In some cases, the dielectric layer is coated or deposited (e.g., chemical vapor deposition or physical vapor deposition) on the conductive layer. The jamming device 200C comprises a first set of chains 210C, a second set of chains 220C, and a number of joints 240C, each joint 240C connecting adjacent segments of the first set of chains 210C and the second set of chains 220C.

[0041] Another exemplary arrangement of a jamming device 200D is shown in FIG. 2D, where the conductive layers 211D of adjacent segments in a chain are conductively coupled. The jamming device 200D has a set of first chains 210D, a set of second chains 220D, and a number of joints 240D, each joint 240D connecting adjacent segments of the first set of chains 210D and the second set of chains 220D. Each segment of the chain has a dielectric layer 230D. In some cases, this multi-layer structure can be built by stacking or layering. In some cases, the conductive layer is coated or deposited (e.g., chemical vapor deposition or physical vapor deposition) on a core layer. In some cases, the core layer provides structural support. In some cases, the dielectric layer is coated or deposited (e.g., chemical vapor deposition or physical vapor deposition) on the conductive layer.

[0042] 3A-3D show various examples of segmented jamming devices and chains that can be used in the segmented jamming devices. FIG. 3A shows an example jamming device 300A with sheet-like segments. The jamming device 300A includes one or more chains 310A. Each chain 310A has two or more adjacent segments (312A and 314A) connected via joints 315A. In this example, the segments (312A, 314A) are rectangular in shape with rounded corners. Each segment has two joints, each joint being close to the center of two opposite edges. FIG. 3B shows another example of a segmented jamming device 300B. The segmented jamming device 300B has a set of first chains 310A and a set of second chains 320A that can use any one of the described embodiments. In one embodiment, each set of chains is similar to the chains shown in Fig. 3A, where each chain 310A has two or more segments with adjacent segments (312A and 314A) connected via joints 315A, and each chain 320A has two or more segments with adjacent segments (322A and 324A) connected via joints 315A. Jamming device 300B has a spacer 325A disposed between the two sets of chains (310A and 320A).

[0043] In some cases, the spacer 325A can be of a hard material, such as polycarbonate, PET, polycarbonate, acrylic, or any other hard or soft plastic. It can also be made of metal, such as aluminum, stainless steel, bronze, etc. In one embodiment, the spacer 325A is located close to the joint (315A). The spacer can increase the second area moment (or moment area of inertia) and bending strength of the chain in axes outside the desired plane of motion. This is done by the spacer pushing the relatively thin segments farther apart. In some cases, this chain configuration significantly improves the strength of the chain to resist bending out of the plane of motion.

[0044] FIG. 3C shows an exemplary chain 300C that can be used in a segmented jamming device. The chain 300C has two or more segments (312C, 314C), where two adjacent segments (312C, 314C) are connected via a joint 315C. In this example, the joint 315C is located close to one edge of the segments (312C, 314C). In some implementations, this chain configuration provides a larger fixation surface and has better resistance to bending. The larger fixation surface area directly increases the forces that can be resisted, and can also provide additional surface area for integration and alignment with external components.

[0045] More complex mechanisms can also be created with segmental fixation. Each segment can have three or more joints, which can be connected into an open or closed chain arrangement. Straight joints, pin-in-slot joints, and other types of joints can also be employed. For example, it is possible to create a four-bar linkage or other compound mechanism with controlled motion, high mechanical efficiency, defined velocity profiles, or many other advantages known to those skilled in the art of linkage design. Further advantages, and techniques for employing them, are described in Erdman, Arthur G. et al., Mechanism Design: Analysis and Synthesis (Pearson Education Taiwan, 2004).

[0046] Figure 3D shows an example of a more complex mechanism 300D. This arrangement is often referred to as a scissor mechanism. Mechanism 300D has two or more segments (312D, 314D), each with three joints 315D connecting adjacent segments. One advantage of this mechanism is that it produces linear motion over large distances with a small motion input. The device can be expanded to cover a large area and then fixed to hold its position and resist external forces.

[0047] 4A and 4B show an example of a segmented jamming device 400 with a protruding connector. In this example, the segmented jamming device 400 comprises a first set of segments 412 and a second set of segments 414. The segments (412, 414) may have any one of the embodiments of the segments as described herein. In some implementations, each segment 412 has a protruding connector 416. Each segment 414 has a protruding connector 417. In some cases, the segments 412 are connected to the segments 414 through joints 415. In some embodiments, the connectors 416 are electrically connected to each other, and the connectors 417 are electrically connected to each other. In some embodiments, the connectors 416 and 417 are connected to wires 418 and 419, respectively. In some cases, the wires 418 and 419 are attached to the connectors with conductive epoxy, and in some embodiments, the wires pass through holes in the segments to create pin joints 415 between adjacent segments. In some cases, a voltage is applied between connector 416 and connector 417 .

[0048] 5A-5C show an experiment using a segmented jamming device 500. The segmented jamming device 500 includes one or more chains 502 arranged in an envelope 510. The envelope 510 has a port 515 connected to a vacuum source 520 via a tube 522. In the illustration of FIG. 5B, the segmented jamming device 500 is in a fixed state, where the pressure in the envelope is lower than the ambient pressure. The segmented jamming device 500 in the fixed state can withstand a certain weight, as shown. In the illustration of FIG. 5C, the segmented jamming device 500 is in a relaxed state, where the pressure in the envelope is approximately the ambient pressure. The segmented jamming device 500 in the relaxed state cannot withstand a certain weight, as shown. Exemplary embodiments
