Description

[Technical field]

[0001] This application claims priority to Chinese Patent Application No. 202010856708.2, entitled “MULTI-BAND ANTENNA SYSTEM AND BASE STATION,” filed with the State Intellectual Property Office of the People's Republic of China on August 24, 2020, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety.

[0002] The present application relates to the field of communications technologies, and more particularly, to multi-band antenna systems and base stations. [Background technology]

[0003] Base station antennas are the foundation of current mobile communications and play an important role in mobile communications. In order to meet people's increasing demands for mobile communication speed and bandwidth, communication systems with higher speed and larger capacity need to be designed. Base station antenna systems are currently evolving from 4th-generation (4G) mobile communication technology to 5th-generation (5G) mobile communication technology. Base station antennas include passive antennas and active antennas, and active antennas may be, for example, massive multiple-input multiple-output (massive MIMO) antennas. At present, the basic technology is that active-passive integrated antenna panel resolution is provided to operators. Integration of multi-band antennas, etc. is a basic technology in antenna systems.

[0004] Therefore, there is currently an urgent need to provide a multi-band antenna system. Summary of the Invention [Means for solving the problem]

[0005] The present application provides a multi-band antenna system and a base station to implement a multi-band architectural layout with good system performance.

[0006] According to a first aspect, a multi-band antenna system is provided, the multi-band antenna system comprising a plurality of radiating element arrays, a feeding network separately corresponding to the plurality of radiating element arrays, a frequency selective surface FSS, and a reflector panel, wherein the plurality of radiating element arrays are disposed above the reflector panel when the reflector panel is placed horizontally, all or a portion of the plurality of radiating element arrays are stacked, and the FSS is disposed between the stacked radiating element arrays, and a feeding network corresponding to at least one of the stacked radiating element arrays is electrically connected to the FSS, or a feeding network corresponding to at least one of the stacked radiating element arrays is integrated on the FSS.

[0007] "An FSS is disposed between stacked radiating element arrays" may include multiple possible implementations. For example, there may be two adjacent stacked radiating element arrays, and a single layer of FSS or multiple layers of FSS are disposed between the two radiating element arrays. In other examples, a single layer of FSS or multiple layers of FSS are disposed between every two adjacent stacked radiating element arrays. It should be understood that multiple layers of FSS are stacked adjacent to each other.

For example, if there is a single layer FSS, the feed network corresponding to one radiating element array may be electrically connected to the FSS, or the feed networks corresponding to multiple radiating element arrays may be electrically connected to the FSS. If there are multiple layers of FSS, the feed network corresponding to one radiating element array may be electrically connected to one of the layers of the FSS, or the feed networks corresponding to multiple radiating element arrays may be electrically connected to one of the layers of the FSS.

[0009] The feeding network may be located above or below the reflective panel, which is not limited in this embodiment of the application.

[0010] In the multi-band antenna system in this embodiment of the present application, at least one layer of FSS is added between the stacked radiating element arrays, thereby reducing the effect of the induced current generated by the feeding network on each radiating element array and improving the performance of the multi-band antenna system. Specifically, the FSS presents a passband characteristic at the operating frequency of the antenna, so that the electromagnetic waves radiated by the antenna can pass through the FSS well, thereby reducing the effect of the feeding network on the electromagnetic waves radiated by the antenna. It should be understood that the feeding network is integrated with the FSS, such that the feeding network is a part of the FSS. [0012] In relation to the first aspect, in some implementations of the first aspect, the frequency bands corresponding separately to the multiple radiating element arrays include at least two different frequency bands. In a possible design, the different frequency bands may include a frequency band corresponding to a 4G antenna and a frequency band corresponding to a 5G antenna.

[0017] In relation to the first aspect, in some implementations of the first aspect, the FSS includes a first FSS, and in the multiple radiating element arrays, the radiating element arrays arranged on the upper layer of the first FSS and the radiating element arrays arranged on the lower layer of the first FSS are respectively arranged in different radomes, which is more convenient for antenna installation and subsequent upgrades.

[0018] It should be understood that the first FSS in this specification refers to any one of at least one layer of the FSS, and is not intended to limit the scope of protection of this embodiment of the present application. In other possible implementations, the multi-band antenna system may include more radomes to implement a protection function. This is not limited to this embodiment of the present application.

[0023] Hereinafter, the technical solutions of the embodiments of the present application will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0024] The technical solutions in the embodiments of the present application may be applied to various communication systems, such as a long term evolution (LTE) system, an LTE frequency division duplex (FDD) system, an LTE time division duplex (TDD) system, a universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS), a worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) communication system, a 5th generation (5G) system or new radio (NR), a device to device (D2D) system, and a vehicle to everything (V2X) system.

[0025] First, the terms used in the embodiments of this application are briefly explained.

[0026] 1. Antenna An antenna may include one or more of a radiating element, a reflector panel (also called a base plate or antenna panel), a feeding network (also called a power distribution network), and a radome. The radiating element of an antenna may include an antenna element. An antenna element, which may be called an element for short, has the function of directing and amplifying electromagnetic waves.

[0027] The feeding network implements a feeding function, where feeding means power supply. In the field of antennas, feeding may be referred to as supplying power or providing energy to the antenna. The function of the feeding network is to feed signals to each radiating element of the antenna with a specific amplitude and a specific phase, or to feed signals received from each radiating element with a specific amplitude and a specific phase to a signal processing element of a base station. The feeding network typically includes controlled impedance transmission lines, and the feeding network may include devices such as phase shifters.

[0028] 2. Frequency selective surface (FSS) FSS is a two-dimensional periodic array structure, which can effectively control the transmission and reflection of incident electromagnetic waves. FSS can be a spatial filter, and the interaction between FSS and electromagnetic waves exhibits obvious band-pass or band-rejection filtering characteristics. FSS has a certain frequency selection function. Usually, there are two types of FSS, one type of FSS is transparent to the incident wave in the case of resonance, and the other type of FSS is reflective to the incident wave in the case of resonance.

[0029] 3.Base station The base station in the embodiment of the present application may be a base transceiver station (BTS) of a global system for mobile communications (GSM) or code division multiple access (CDMA), may be a Node B (NB) of a wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) system, may be an evolved Node B (eNB or eNodeB) of an LTE system, or may be a radio controller in a cloud radio access network (CRAN) scenario. Alternatively, the base station may include a relay, an access point, an in-vehicle device, a wearable device, a base station in a future 5G network, a base station in a future evolved public land mobile network (PLMN), etc. This is not limited in the embodiment of the present application.

[0030] Base station antenna is an important component of a base station. With the evolution of base station antenna systems, multi-band antenna systems have already become a research focus at present.

[0031] In the design of a multi-band antenna system, when the antenna is placed horizontally (e.g., the reflector panel of the antenna is placed horizontally), both the radiating element array of one or more frequency bands and the feeding network of the radiating element array are placed above the radiating element array of the other frequency bands. The induced current on the upper cable is inductively coupled to the lower radiating element array to excite the induced current. This has a large effect on the radiating element array of each frequency band, for example, the antenna pattern is distorted or the antenna pattern resonates.

[0032] Considering this, the present application provides a novel multi-band antenna system to implement a multi-band architectural layout with good system performance.

[0033] 1 is a schematic diagram of a multi-band antenna system 100 according to an embodiment of the present application. The multi-band antenna system 100 includes four radiating element arrays (radiating element array 110, radiating element array 120, radiating element array 130, and radiating element array 140), three feed networks (feed network 111, feed network 121, and feed network 131) corresponding to the four radiating element arrays, a frequency selective surface FSS 150, and a reflector panel 160.

[0034] In this embodiment of the application, the radiating element array may have a many-to-one relationship or a one-to-one relationship with the feeding network. This is not limited in this embodiment of the application. As shown in FIG. 1 , the radiating element array 110 corresponds to the feeding network 111, the radiating element array 120 corresponds to the feeding network 121, and the radiating element array 130 and the radiating element array 140 both correspond to the feeding network 131. The radiating element array may be electrically connected to the feeding network corresponding to the radiating element array. For example, the radiating element array 110 is electrically connected to the feeding network 111, the radiating element array 120 is electrically connected to the feeding network 121, and the radiating element array 130 and the radiating element array 140 are both electrically connected to the feeding network 131.

[0035] When the reflective panel 160 is placed horizontally, The four radiating element arrays are arranged above the reflecting panel 160, and the four radiating element arrays are stacked. For the stacking method in this embodiment of the present application, the four radiating element arrays in FIG. array Please note that this refers to the installation method of: As shown in Figure 1 , release Array of 110 , release 120 Array of Laser Beams , release A reflective element array 130, and FreeThe radiating element array 140 is stacked from the bottom up. array The planes corresponding to are parallel to each other.

[0036] The three feeding networks may be separately disposed above the reflecting panel 160 or may be disposed below the reflecting panel 160. In a possible design, the feeding network 111 may pass through the reflecting panel 160 and be disposed below the reflecting panel 160, and the feeding network 121 and the feeding network 131 may be disposed above the reflecting panel 160. This is not limited in this embodiment of the present application.

[0037] In the multi-band antenna system 100, the FSS 150 is disposed and arranged between the radiating element array 120 and the radiating element array 130. The feed network 131 corresponding to the radiating element array 130 is electrically connected to the FSS 150. Optionally, the feed networks corresponding to the other radiating element arrays may alternatively be electrically connected to the FSS 150. For example, the feed network 121 corresponding to the radiating element array 120 may alternatively be electrically connected to the FSS 150, which is not shown in FIG. 1. The FSS 150 needs to be electrically connected to at least one of the feed networks corresponding to the four radiating element arrays so that the feed network connected to the FSS 150 is grounded. In a product implementation, the FSS 150 is more easily connected to the feed network corresponding to the radiating element array disposed above the FSS 150.

[0038] The FSS is added between the stacked radiating element arrays (radiating element array 120 and radiating element array 130) to reduce the effect of the induced current generated by the feeding network on each radiating element array. Specifically, the FSS provides passband characteristics at the operating frequency of the antenna so that the electromagnetic waves radiated by the antenna disposed below the FSS can pass through the FSS well, thereby reducing the effect of the feeding network on the performance of the electromagnetic waves radiated by the antenna. It should be understood that the feeding network is integrated with the FSS such that the feeding network is a part of the FSS. Therefore, the upper feeding network does not affect the electromagnetic radiation of the antenna.

[0039] It should be noted that all the technical solutions in this embodiment of the present application can be applied to the scenario where the reflector panel is placed horizontally. The details will not be described again below. FIG. 1 only shows a possible design. The multi-band antenna system in the present application may alternatively be designed as multiple other structures. FIG. 2 shows another multi-band antenna system 200 according to the present application. In FIG. 2, the radiating element array 120, the radiating element array 130, and the radiating element array 140 may be placed above the radiating element array 110. However, the radiating element array 120 and the radiating element array 130 are placed in one layer. In other words, the radiating element array 120 and the radiating element array 130 are not stacked. The FSS 150 is placed between the radiating element array 110 and both the radiating element array 120 and the radiating element array 130. The FSS 150 may be electrically connected to the feeding network 121, may be electrically connected to the feeding network 131, or may be electrically connected to the feeding network 121 and the feeding network 131. This is not limited in this embodiment of the present application. For other details of FIG. 2, please refer to the description of FIG. 1. The details will not be described again here.

[0040] All of the multiple radiating element arrays in the multi-band antenna system may be stacked (as shown in FIG. 1), or some of the multiple radiating element arrays in the multi-band antenna system may be stacked (as shown in FIG. 2). This is not limited in this embodiment of the present application. It should be understood that in this embodiment of the present application, four radiating element arrays are used merely as an example for illustration. However, the multi-band antenna system may alternatively have other numbers of radiating element arrays, for example, two radiating element arrays, and the two radiating element arrays are respectively disposed above and below the FSS. This is not limited in this embodiment of the present application.

[0041] In Figures 1 and 2, one layer of FSS 150 is used for illustration purposes only. In other possible designs, the multi-band antenna system in this embodiment of the present application may include multiple layers of FSS. An example will be described below with reference to Figures 3 and 4.

[0042] 3 shows another multi-band antenna system 300 according to the present application including FSS150 and FSS151, where radiating element array 110, radiating element array 120, radiating element array 130, and radiating element array 140 are stacked from bottom to top, with FSS151 disposed between radiating element array 110 and radiating element array 120, and FSS150 disposed between radiating element array 120 and radiating element array 130. Feeding network 121 corresponding to radiating element array 120 is electrically connected to FSS151. Feeding network 131 corresponding to radiating element array 130 is electrically connected to FSS150.

[0043] Alternatively, the feeding network 121 corresponding to the radiating element array 120 may also be electrically connected to the FSS 150. In other words, both the feeding network 121 and the feeding network 131 are electrically connected to the FSS 150, which is not shown, although this is not limited to this embodiment of the present application.

[0044] Optionally, one layer of FSS may be further disposed between radiating element array 130 and radiating element array 140, which is not shown in Fig. 3. For other details of Fig. 3, please refer to the description of Fig. 1. The details will not be described again here.

[0045] 4 shows another multi-band antenna system 400 according to the present application, including FSS150 and FSS151, in which radiating element array 110, radiating element array 120, radiating element array 130, and radiating element array 140 are stacked from bottom to top, and FSS150 and FSS151 are both disposed between radiating element array 120 and radiating element array 130, i.e., FSS150 and FSS151 are stacked adjacent to each other. The arrangement of multiple layers of FSS is more conducive to reducing the influence of induced current generated by the feeding network on each radiating element array. The feeding network 131 corresponding to radiating element array 130 is electrically connected to FSS150.

[0046] Alternatively, the power supply network 131 may also be electrically connected to the FSS 151. In other words, the power supply network 131 is electrically connected to the FSS 150 and the FSS 151. Alternatively, the power supply network 131 is electrically connected to the FSS 150 and the power supply network 121 is electrically connected to the FSS 151, which is not shown, although this is not limited to this embodiment of the present application.

[0047] Optionally, at least one layer of FSS may be further disposed between radiating element array 110 and radiating element array 120, and at least one layer of FSS may also be further disposed between radiating element array 130 and radiating element array 140, which is not shown in Figure 4. For other details of Figure 4, please refer to the description of Figure 1. The details will not be described again here.

[0048] In this embodiment of the present application, multiple layers of FSS may be disposed between any two adjacent radiating element arrays among the four radiating element arrays, which is more conducive to reducing the influence of the induced current generated by the feeding network on each radiating element array.

[0049] In conclusion, at least one layer of FSS may be disposed between any two adjacent radiating element arrays of the stacked radiating element arrays in this embodiment of the present application, and a feeding network corresponding to the at least one radiating element array is electrically connected to the at least one layer of FSS, thereby reducing the effect of induced currents generated by the feeding network for each radiating element array and improving the performance of the multi-band antenna system.

[0050] Optionally, the multiple radiating element arrays separately correspond to at least two different frequency bands, e.g., radiating element array 110 corresponds to a first frequency band and radiating element array 120 corresponds to a second frequency band, the first frequency band and the second frequency band being unequal.

[0051] As an example, a two-frequency band antenna system is used. Figure 5 is a schematic diagram of another multi-band antenna system according to an embodiment of the present application. In Figure 5, the radiating element array of frequency band 2 is disposed above the reflecting panel, FSS1 is disposed above the radiating element array of frequency band 2, and the radiating element array of frequency band 1 is disposed above FSS1. In other words, FSS1 is disposed between the radiating element array of frequency band 1 and the radiating element array of frequency band 2. The radiating element of frequency band 1 array The power supply network corresponding to may be referred to as the power supply network of frequency band 1 for short, and the power supply network of frequency band 1 is electrically connected to FSS1.

[0052] 6 is a schematic diagram of another multi-band antenna system. The multi-band antenna system includes FSS1 and FSS2, which are stacked and disposed between a radiating element array for frequency band 1 and a radiating element array for frequency band 2. A feed network for frequency band 1 is electrically connected to FSS1.

[0053] In a possible design, frequency band 1 is a frequency band corresponding to a 4G antenna, and frequency band 2 is a frequency band corresponding to a 5G antenna, although this is not limited to this embodiment of the present application.

[0054] As an example, a three frequency band antenna system is used. Figure 7 is a schematic diagram of another multi-band antenna system according to an embodiment of the present application. In Figure 7, the radiating element array of frequency band 2 is disposed above the reflecting panel, FSS1 is disposed above the radiating element array of frequency band 2, and the radiating element array of frequency band 1 and the radiating element array of frequency band 3 are disposed above FSS1. The radiating element array of frequency band 1 and the radiating element array of frequency band 3 are disposed on the same layer. The radiating element of frequency band 1 array The feeding network corresponding to the radiating element of frequency band 3 is sometimes called the feeding network of frequency band 1 for short. array The feeding network corresponding to the frequency band 1 may be referred to as the feeding network of frequency band 3 for short. The feeding network of frequency band 1 and the feeding network of frequency band 3 are electrically connected to FSS1. In a possible design, the radiating element array of frequency band 1 and the radiating element array of frequency band 3 may be fed by a common feeding network, which is electrically connected to FSS1. In Figs. 5 to 7, FSS1 (and FSS2) transmits the electromagnetic waves radiated by the array of frequency band 2 and reflects at least a part of the electromagnetic waves radiated by the array of frequency band 1, thereby reducing the effect of the induced current generated by the feeding network on each radiating element array.

[0055] Optionally, the FSS in this embodiment of the present application is an FSS with a grid, for example, a band-pass FSS, as shown in Figure 8. The equivalent circuit of the band-pass FSS is a parallel resonant cable, the resonance point is open-circuited, and the radiated electromagnetic wave corresponding to the resonance point is completely transmitted at the resonance point. The FSS may be any structure with a transmission function, which is not limited in this embodiment of the present application.

[0056] Figures 9 and 10 are two possible schematic diagrams in which the radiating element array of frequency band 1 in the previous figures is electrically connected to FSS1 using a feeding network. In Figure 9, the radiating element array of frequency band 1 is connected to FSS1 using a cable, and a part of the cable is parallel to the plane in which FSS1 is placed. In Figure 10, the radiating element array of frequency band 1 is fed downward using a balun, which is connected to a cable, and is connected to the FSS using a cable, and the cable is parallel to the plane in which FSS1 is placed. This connection scheme is easily implemented. Note that the cable in each of Figures 9 and 10 may alternatively be replaced by a transmission line integrated in FSS1. This is not limited in this embodiment of the present application.

[0057] Optionally, the cable parallel to the FSS and the radiating element array of frequency band 1 may be disposed on the same side of FSS1, or the cable parallel to the FSS and the radiating element array of frequency band 1 may be distributed on both sides of FSS1, i.e., the cable may pass through FSS1. This is not limited in this embodiment of the present application.

[0058] In an optional implementation, the electrical connection between the power supply network and the FSS is one of a DC connection, a combined connection, or a segmented DC connection.

[0059] Although the power supply network being electrically connected to the FSS is used as an example to describe the solution in the above embodiment, in other possible designs, the power supply network may be integrated onto the FSS.

[0060] The feeding network in this embodiment of the present application may include a cable (as shown in Figures 11-13), a microstrip (as shown in Figures 14 and 15), or other forms of transmission line. This is not limited to this embodiment of the present application. For example, the radiating element of frequency band 1 array The corresponding power supply network is electrically connected to FSS1. FIG. 11 is a schematic diagram of a DC connection between the cable and FSS1, where the cable directly contacts FSS1. FIG. 12 is a schematic diagram of a coupled connection between the cable and FSS1, where a certain distance is kept between the cable and FSS1. FIG. 13 is a schematic diagram of a segmented DC connection between the cable and FSS1, where the cable directly contacts FSS1 at the contact point. FIG. 14 is a schematic diagram of a segmented DC connection between the microstrip and FSS1. FIG. 15 is a schematic diagram in which the microstrip is integrated into FSS1. Indeed, the microstrip and FSS1 may alternatively be DC connected or segmented DC connected.

[0061] In an optional implementation, in the multiple radiating element arrays, the radiating element array disposed on the upper layer of the first FSS and the radiating element array disposed on the lower layer of the first FSS are disposed on different radomes. It should be understood that the antenna system may include one layer of FSS or multiple layers of FSS. When the antenna system includes multiple layers of FSS, the first FSS may be any one of the multiple layers of FSS, and is not intended to limit the scope of protection of this embodiment of the present application.
