Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a liquid pressure reducing valve, particularly but not exclusively for water mains applications. [Background technology]

[0002] Loss of water from the mains is a problem due to the aging of the mains piping and damage to the mains and associated equipment. Many mains are old and have multiple leaks. Even newer mains can have leaks. The leakage flow rate is greatest when the water pressure is highest, which is not surprising. However, the inventor has noted a simple correlation between, on the one hand, the pressure required to maintain a given minimum pressure at a remote location of the local network downstream of a regulator between a high pressure local source and the local network, and, on the other hand, the flow rate in the local network. Both the required regulated pressure downstream of the regulator and the flow rate usually appear to be linearly related. Nevertheless, the inventor has recognized that there are no pressure regulators that are controlled according to the flow rate through them, except for the following:

[0003] An earlier proposal from UK Patent No. 2,176,316 stated in its abstract: An apparatus for controlling the flow rate of water through a pipe (26) including a valve (29) and an orifice plate (37) to supply a water distribution system includes a governor (1) that operates a pilot valve (14) in a servo system that controls the valve (29). The governor (1) has two diaphragms (5) and (6) connected by a tension spring (7) whose extension depends on the flow rate through the orifice plate (37). The first diaphragm (5) operates a valve member (13) of the pilot valve (14) and is subjected to a pressure difference caused by the flow rate through the orifice plate (37). The second diaphragm (6) is loaded by a compression spring (8) and its displacement depends on the control pressure at a tapping (38) of the pipe (26). The movement of the valve member (14) is a combination of the displacements of the two diaphragms (5 and 6) such that an increase in the demand for water causes an increase in the control pressure at the tapping (38). It was disclosed. [Prior art documents] [Patent documents]

[0004] [Patent Document 1] British Patent No. 2,176,316 Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0005] SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT EMBODIMENT It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved hydraulic pressure reducing valve. [Means for solving the problem]

[0006] According to the present invention, there is provided a fluid pressure reducing valve device, comprising: A spring type adjuster, a body including a chamber; a liquid supply orifice to the chamber and a liquid outlet from the chamber; an adjusting plate opposite the orifice and for receiving, in use, a supply of liquid acting thereon; a spring acting to bias the plate towards the orifice; a diaphragm between the adjusting plate and the body for closing a chamber therebetween and for receiving, in use, a regulated pressure in the chamber; A spring regulator comprising: a controllable motor drive acting between the end of the spring distal to the adjustment plate and the body; a flow meter downstream of the outlet; a controller configured to receive flow data from the flow meter and control the servo motor to retract the distal end of the spring according to the flow measured by the flow meter; Equipped with During use when demand flow increases, the adjusting plate is configured to be partially withdrawn to maintain downstream pressure against such increase, and vice versa. A fluid pressure reducing valve device is provided.

[0007] Preferably, the controllable motor drive is a servo motor drive.

[0008] The invention is particularly applicable to water mains where the fluid is a liquid, particularly water, although the inventors envisage that the invention is applicable to both liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon fluids.

[0009] The controller can adapt the calculation of servo motor operation at the position of the spring according to a substantially linear downstream pressure and flow rate relationship. The calculation can be based on the pressure achieved with respect to the servo positioning of the spring, or on the servo positioning of the spring only. Alternatively, the controller can adapt the servo motor operation according to a look-up table of downstream pressure and flow rates. Again, the look-up table can include values of the pressure to be achieved, but preferably includes the spring position in terms of servo rotation.

[0010] In order to facilitate an understanding of the invention, specific embodiments thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: [Brief description of the drawings]

[0011] [Figure 1] This is Figure 2 of an earlier proposal, UK Patent No. 2,176,316. [Diagram 2] 1 is a schematic cross-sectional side view of a pressure regulator of the present invention; [Diagram 3] A similar diagram on a smaller scale, including the lines from the controller and remote pressure sensor. [Figure 4] 1 is a typical plot of the pressure that needs to be applied to a piping network for a constant remote pressure with varying demand flow. [Diagram 5] FIG. 1 is a diagram of a water main with a regulator of the present invention and a number of demand supply taps and leaks. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0012] Referring to the drawings, the spring loaded regulator 1 has a body 2 containing a chamber 3. An inlet 4 opens into the chamber via an inlet orifice 5. The inlet is connected to a high pressure water main 6. An outlet 7 from the chamber is connected to a piping network 8 of piping for the local supply of water to individual demands. The regulator has a flow pressure regulating plate 9 located opposite the inlet orifice 5. A diaphragm 10 is fixed to the plate 9 and radiates therefrom into the body forming a seal between the upper and lower portions 11, 12 of the body 2. The chamber 3 is therefore sealed between the upper and lower portions.

[0013] The adjusting plate has a guide rod 14 extending downwardly therefrom into a guide 16 in the inlet orifice 5. The rod extends through both the adjusting plate and the diaphragm. At its upper end is mounted a nut 17 which rests on a spring centering washer 18 and plate 19 which seals and clamps the diaphragm. This arrangement keeps the adjusting plate centered in the inlet orifice 5.

[0014] In a variant, a separate adjusting plate 109 facing the orifice is provided on the lower rod 14. A diaphragm holds the plate 9 / 109 in the center of the orifice 5.

[0015] The compression spring 21 acts at its lower end 22 on the upper part of the clamping plate 19. As will be explained below, the spring is kept in a more or less compressed state. It therefore remains disposed around the centering washer 18. Its upper end 23 abuts a spring drive member 24 at the end of a drive tube 25 of a servo device 26. The drive tube is housed in a fixed tube 27 of the servo device and is fixed to the upper part 11 of the regulator body 2. Distal to the spring, a lead screw 28 is supported in axial alignment within the drive tube in the fixed tube. A motor 29 and a gearbox 30 are arranged to drive the lead screw. A nut 31, preferably a recirculating ball nut, is fixed to the distal end of the drive tube 25, which is fixed to the fixed tube so as not to rotate. Thus, by rotating the motor and the lead screw, respectively, the spring drive member can be advanced to further compress the spring or retracted to relieve compression.

[0016] Downstream of the outlet 7 runs pipe 8 of the local supply network, which includes, adjacent the outlet, a flow meter 32 and a pressure sensor 33. These are electronically connected to a controller 34. Also connected to the controller is a remote pressure sensor 35 at the furthest point 36 of the pipe 8.

[0017] Along the piping there are various leaks 37 whose flow rates increase with pressure, the number of user taps 38, etc. These are the primary determinants of flow rate at the pressure regulator 1. If this pressure regulator were the type that was permanently set to a pressure that maintained sufficient pressure at the furthest location 36 in the piping network, the pressure would be such that it exacerbated the leaks 37, regardless of the user flow rate at the taps 38.

[0018] In this embodiment of the invention, the entire pressure reducing valve apparatus includes not only the regulator 1 and the flow meter 32, but also a controller 38 for controlling the regulator via a servo motor in accordance with the flow rate measured by the flow regulator, and, in fact, a remote pressure sensor 35, which is not strictly necessary to the invention.

[0019] Many local supply networks such as network 8 have been previously measured and show pressure / flow characteristics as shown in Figure 4 when regulators are set to provide the furthest location pressures required for various flows. The ideal low pressure location 41 with zero flow rarely exists due to leaks. A practical low pressure location 42 can be measured at night when user demand is negligible. Other flow and pressure readings 43 can be taken during periods of higher and lower usage by adjusting regulators to provide sufficient furthest location pressure.

[0020] In reality, the pressure flow plot is substantially a straight line with a slope or gradient and an offset equal to the zero flow offset.

[0021] Pressure required at regulator = zero flow pressure + measured flow x plot slope (for pressure per unit flow).

[0022] This is surprising since adjusting the regulator would be expected to change the measured flow rate. However, this is a secondary effect since the primary determinant of flow rate is user usage. By keeping the pressure in the network lower than it would have been if it had been set to a value that ensured the furthest location was adequate for maximum flow rate, the leakage flow rate is kept small in comparison and lower than it could have been. Such values would result in excessive flow rates and excessive leaks in all other flows.

[0023] The regulator spring 21 acts against the force exerted by the diaphragm 10, which receives the pressure to be regulated, and the upstream pressure exerted against the regulating plate 9 is substantially constant and small compared to the diaphragm force. Thus, shortening the spring by an amount proportional to the required change in pressure can bring about this change. It should be noted that for a significant change in the pressure drop at the outlet orifice, only a small movement of the regulating plate is necessary. Thus, for practical purposes, a linear movement of the end of the spring, acted upon by the servomotor, causes a linear change in the regulated pressure. The controller can therefore be set to move the end of the spring linearly depending on the flow rate.

[0024] If the zero flow pressure and the slope of the measured flow plot are not known, the controller can be set to periodically adjust the trim pressure for the various flows to establish the pressure required to achieve sufficient pressure at the furthest location. For this purpose, connections are made to the remote pressure sensor 35 and to the proximal pressure sensor 33, suitably wirelessly in the former case.

[0025] Rather than storing only offsets and slopes, the controller may be equipped with a memory adapted to record a map of pressure and flow rates, which can be used as a look-up table of the pressure at which downstream pressure needs to be adjusted as a function of the measured flow rate.

[0026] The sensor 33 can be used to fine tune the servo motor control to achieve the desired pressure according to the measured flow rate.
