Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present disclosure relates to an aerosol generating device and a cartridge containing an aerosol-forming substrate for use in an aerosol generating device.Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a shisha device and a cartridge comprising an aerosol-forming substrate for use in a shisha device.

[0002] A conventional shisha device is used to smoke tobacco and is configured so that the vapor and smoke pass through a basin before being inhaled by the consumer. A shisha device may include one outlet or may include two or more outlets so that the device may be used by two or more consumers simultaneously. Using a shisha device is considered by some to be a recreational activity and a social experience.

[0003] Typically, traditional shisha is used in combination with a substrate, sometimes referred to in the art as hookah tobacco, tobacco molasses, or simply molasses. Traditional shisha substrates are relatively high in sugar (sometimes up to about 50% versus about 20% typically found in traditional tobacco substrates such as combustible cigarettes). The tobacco used in the shisha device may be mixed with other ingredients, for example to increase the amount of vapor and smoke produced, or to modify the flavor, or both.

[0004] Conventional shisha devices employ charcoal, such as charcoal pellets, to heat and possibly burn a tobacco substrate to generate an aerosol for inhalation by a user. The use of charcoal to heat the tobacco can result in full or partial combustion of the tobacco or other components. Additionally, charcoal can generate harmful or potentially harmful products, such as carbon monoxide, which can mix with the shisha vapor and pass through the water basin to the outlet.

[0005] One way to reduce the production of carbon monoxide and combustion by-products is to use e-liquid rather than tobacco. Shisha devices that use e-liquid eliminate the by-products of combustion but deprive shisha consumers of the experience that comes from traditional tobacco.

[0006] Other shisha devices have been proposed that employ electric heaters that heat but do not burn the tobacco. Such electrically heated non-combustion shisha devices heat the tobacco substrate to a temperature sufficient to generate an aerosol from the substrate without burning the substrate, thus reducing or eliminating the by-products associated with tobacco combustion.

[0007] The shisha device may employ a cartridge for housing an aerosol-forming substrate. The cartridge may be filled with such an aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol-forming substrate may include tobacco, preferably a shisha substrate, such as molasses (a mixture of tobacco, water, sugar, and other ingredients such as glycerin, flavorants, etc.). A heating system in the electrically heated shisha device heats the contents of the cartridge to generate an aerosol, which is conveyed to the user through an airflow path.

[0008] To facilitate airflow through the cartridge and aerosol flow from the cartridge, the shisha cartridge may have one or more holes through one or more walls. The cartridge may include one or more holes at the top, one or more holes at the bottom, or both one or more holes at the top and one or more holes at the bottom. The holes may also be located along the sides of the cartridge.

[0009] If not sealed, the pores or openings in the cartridge can result in leakage problems as well as loss of freshness (e.g., moisture content) or contamination of the substrate. For one or more reasons, such as to maintain freshness, to prevent leakage of the substrate, or to preserve the quality and integrity of the substrate during storage, it may be desirable to close or seal the openings or openings in the cartridge prior to use or between uses if the entire contents of the cartridge are not used all at once.

[0010] It would be desirable to provide a shisha cartridge where an opening is automatically formed by heating the cartridge. It would be desirable to provide a shisha cartridge that does not require a peelable sticker or liner to seal the opening. It would be desirable to provide a shisha cartridge that is closed before being exposed to a temperature at or above a threshold temperature and has an opening after being exposed to a temperature at or above a threshold temperature.

[0011] According to an embodiment of the present invention, a cartridge for containing an aerosol-forming substrate is provided. The cartridge may comprise a body. The RTD of a sample refers to the difference in static pressure between the two ends of the sample when traversed by an air stream under steady conditions where the volumetric flow rate is 17.5 milliliters / second at the output end. The RTD of a sample may be measured using the method described in ISO standard 6565:2002.

[0051] The one or more openings or apertures on the body, once formed, may cover 5% or more, 10% or more, 15% or more, 20% or more, or 25% or more of the area of the wall on which the opening resides. For example, if the opening is on a top wall, the opening may cover at least 5% of the area of the top wall. The one or more openings on the body may cover 75% or less, 50% or less, 40% or less, or 30% or less of the area of the wall on which the opening resides.

[0052] In some embodiments, the formation of the opening may result from a weakened or deformable portion in the material of the wall of the body. As discussed below, the weakened or deformable portion may be provided in any suitable manner. The weakened or deformable portion may form an opening in the wall when exposed to a temperature equal to or greater than a threshold temperature. In some embodiments, the threshold temperature is equal to or less than the operating temperature of the shisha device. The operating temperature of the shisha device may include a preheat temperature during a preheating stage, if present. In a preferred embodiment, the shisha device reaches the threshold temperature during a first stage of heating (e.g., preheating) of the device.

[0053] In some embodiments, at least one of the walls includes a second material that is not deformable below a threshold temperature. In some embodiments, the second material is not deformable at the operating temperature of the shisha device. The second material may include an opening such that the heat deformable material forms a closure of the opening in the second material before being exposed to a temperature above the threshold temperature. When the heat deformable material is exposed to a threshold temperature (e.g., the cartridge is heated above the threshold temperature), the heat deformable material deforms (e.g., changes shape) such that an opening is formed through the wall of the cartridge. In some embodiments, the wall includes a layer of heat deformable material adjacent to a layer of a second material that is not heat deformable. The layer of the second material has an opening through the layer, and the layer of heat deformable material covers the opening in the second material.

[0054] An embodiment including a first material that is a heat deformable material and a second material that is not heat deformable may have a laminated or layered structure. The first material may be an outer layer, an inner layer, or both an outer layer and an inner layer, with a layer of the second material between the outer layer and the inner layer, or a layer between two other layers (e.g., between two layers of the second material). The first material may form a continuous layer on the second material, where the second material includes pre-cut holes. In another embodiment, the first material may include multiple parts that cover pre-cut holes in the second material. For example, the first material may include individual parts that cover each of the multiple pre-cut holes in the second material.

[0055] Materials suitable for use as the second material that is not heat deformable include materials that do not deform below a threshold temperature. Exemplary materials include metals such as aluminum, steel, copper, tin foil, etc., and polymeric materials that have a higher glass transition temperature than the heat deformable material.

[0056] In some embodiments, the heat deformable portion is formed by a thinner portion of the material. The heat deformable material may have a first area having a first thickness and a second area having a second thickness, the second thickness being less than the first thickness such that the area of the second thickness forms the heat deformable portion.

[0057] In some embodiments, the heat deformable portion is formed by a gas pocket or multiple gas pockets in the heat deformable material of at least one of the walls. The gas pocket causes the material to thin in the area adjacent to the gas pocket. When the temperature of the material of the capsule wall increases, the heat deformable material around the gas pocket can deform. Furthermore, the gas pocket can be destroyed by increasing the vapor pressure inside the gas pocket. By using multiple gas pockets, multiple openings can be formed when the heat deformable material is heated to a threshold temperature.

[0058] Preferably, the gas inside the gas pocket is inert, does not negatively contribute to the odor of the aerosol, and is not harmful when inhaled by a user at concentrations resulting from use of the cartridge in a shisha device. One example of a suitable gas is CO2.

[0059] An example of a material containing a gas pocket surrounded by a polymer wall is a closed cell foam. The material containing the gas pocket may be combined with a laminate-like structure, in which the wall having the heat deformable portion also includes a layer of a second material that is not heat deformable and that includes a pre-cut hole adjacent to the gas pocket.

[0060] In some embodiments, the heat deformable portion comprises an open-cell foam with a non-porous skin on at least one side of the foam. Examples of techniques for making open-cell foam with a non-porous skin are described in Tai et al., Control of Pore Size and Structure of Tissue Engineering Scaffolds Produced by Supercritical Fluid Processing, European Cells and Materials Vol. 14.2007 (pages 64-77). Tai et al. illustrate films made from poly-DL-lactide (PDLLA) or poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) with CO2 gas forced into them using a high-pressure pump to control the temperature and pressure during various stages of production.

[0061] The size and shape of the gas pockets can be tailored by using surfactants or blowing agents during the manufacturing of the material and / or during the extrusion process. Examples of techniques for tailoring the size and shape of the cells are described in EP 2671911 B1 to Meller et al. The size and shape of the gas pockets can be tailored so that the heat deformable portion is sufficiently weak at a threshold temperature.

[0062] In some embodiments, the opening is formed from a slit or cut in the material. For example, the material may have a partially cut hole, where a portion of the hole's circumference is cut without removing any material. The edges of the material on either side of the slit or cut may be in contact with each other before the heat deformable material is heated to the threshold temperature. When the heat deformable material is heated to the threshold temperature, the edges of the material may recede due to the material shrinking, contracting, or curling, forming an opening.

[0063] In some embodiments, the heat deformable portion includes a region of shape memory material. Before being heated to the threshold temperature, the heat deformable portion may have a first state. In some embodiments, in the first state, the body is closed. After being heated to the threshold temperature, the heat deformable portion may have a second state. In some embodiments, in the second state, the body is open. The shape memory material may return to the first closed state below a recovery temperature. The shape memory material may return to the first closed state below a recovery temperature of the second threshold temperature.

[0064] The shape memory material may provide a reversible opening of the aperture. The heat deformable portion may be capable of transitioning from a first state to a second state and from the second state back to the first state, or to a third state that is substantially the same as the first state. For example, the heat deformable portion may have substantially the same shape in the third state as that of the first state, such that the third state is also a closed state.

[0065] The shape memory material can be layered with a second material that is not heat deformable. The second material can have pre-cut holes that are covered by the shape memory material. The shape memory material can be oriented such that the deformed material in the second state protrudes outwardly from the cartridge. In a layered structure, the shape memory material can form an outer layer.

[0066] Any suitable material can be used to make the heat deformable portion. For example, the heat deformable portion can include a heat deformable material that includes a polymer. Examples of suitable polymers include polylactic acid (PLA), polyolefins, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and polymers used in heat shrinkable and shrink wrap applications. In particular, PLA, polyolefins, and polymers used in heat shrinkable and shrink wrap applications may be suitable in embodiments where deformation or shrink behavior of the material is required. On the other hand, if shape memory behavior of the material is desired, PEEK or modified PEEK (e.g., prepared from sulfonated PEEK ionomers and high temperature fatty acid salts such as sodium oleate) can be used. Examples of suitable non-polymeric shape memory materials include bimetallic materials such as aluminum-stainless steel sheets. One example of a heat deformable material that includes gas pockets is a closed cell foam with trapped gas cells surrounded by a polymer.

[0067] The threshold temperature can be adjusted by blending one or more additives into the polymer of the heat-deformable material, for example poly-D-lactic acid can be blended into PLA to increase the threshold temperature by about 50°C.

[0068] The heat deformable material may be selected to have a threshold temperature in a desired range. For example, the heat deformable material may be selected to have a threshold temperature below an operating temperature, such as within a preheat temperature, of the shisha device. The threshold temperature may be 400° C. or less, 350° C. or less, 300° C. or less, 250° C. or less, 225° C. or less, 200° C. or less, 175° C. or less, or 150° C. or less. The threshold temperature may be 60° C. or more, 70° C. or more, 80° C. or more, 100° C. or more, or 125° C. or more.

[0069] In preferred embodiments, the body material does not release harmful, toxic, or dangerous components when heated. Additionally, the material preferably does not release odorous or flammable materials when heated. In some embodiments, the body material, including the heat deformable material, does not melt at a threshold temperature or at the operating temperature of the shisha device.

[0070] If the capsule includes heat-deformable portions on two or more of the walls, the heat-deformable portions may be similar in material and construction or may differ from one another. For example, the heat-deformable portions may include any combination of the embodiments discussed herein.

[0071] The heat deformable portion may be located on the bottom wall, the top wall, the side wall, or any combination thereof. In some preferred embodiments, the bottom wall and the top wall include heat deformable portions. In embodiments in which the bottom wall and the top wall include heat deformable portions, upon heating to a threshold temperature, openings may be formed in both the bottom wall and the top wall, allowing airflow through the cartridge. The airflow path may be substantially parallel to the vertical central axis of the cartridge.

[0072] In some embodiments, the cartridge may further include a lid, seal, or layer covering one or more walls. For example, in embodiments where the heat-deformable portion includes a slit or cut in the material, the wall may be further covered by a removable cover. The removable cover is preferably sufficient to prevent leakage of the cartridge contents and to prevent airflow through the inlet and outlet to extend shelf life. The removable cover may include a lid or cap, or a peelable label such as a sticker, foil, etc. The label, sticker, or foil may be affixed to the cartridge in any suitable manner, such as by adhesive, crimping, welding, or otherwise bonding to the container. The seal may include a tab that may be gripped to peel or remove the label, sticker, or foil from the cartridge.

[0073] In some embodiments, the cartridge is a shisha cartridge that may be used with any suitable shisha device. Preferably, the shisha device is configured to heat the aerosol-forming substrate in the cartridge sufficiently to form an aerosol from the aerosol-forming substrate, but not combust the aerosol-forming substrate. For example, the shisha device may be configured to heat the aerosol-forming substrate to a temperature (e.g., an operating temperature) in the range of about 150°C to about 300°C, more preferably about 180°C to about 250°C, or about 200°C to about 230°C. In some embodiments, the shisha device may be configured to heat the cartridge to or above a threshold temperature in a first heating stage (e.g., a preheating stage). The operating temperature of the shisha device may include a preheating temperature during the preheating stage. The first heating stage may cause an opening to be formed in one or more walls. The shisha device may be further configured to heat the cartridge and the aerosol-forming substrate therein to a desired operating temperature in a second heating stage.

[0074] The shisha device may include a receptacle for receiving the cartridge. The shisha device may include a heating element configured to contact or be in close proximity to the body of the cartridge when the cartridge is received in the receptacle. The heating element may form at least a portion of the receptacle. For example, the heating element may form at least a portion of a surface of the receptacle. The shisha cartridge may be configured to transfer heat from the heating element to the aerosol-forming substrate in the cavity by conduction. In some embodiments, the heating element includes an electric heating element. In some embodiments, the heating element includes a resistive heating component. For example, the heating element may include one or more resistive wires or other resistive elements. The resistive wires may be in contact with a thermally conductive material to distribute the generated heat over a larger area. Examples of suitable electrically conductive materials include aluminum, copper, zinc, nickel, silver, and combinations thereof. The heating element may form at least a portion of a surface of the receptacle.

[0075] The shisha device may include control electronics operably coupled to the heating element. The control electronics may be configured to control the heating of the heating element. The control electronics may be configured to control the temperature to which the aerosol-forming substrate in the cartridge is heated. The control electronics may be provided in any suitable form, for example, may include a controller, or a memory and a controller. The controller may include one or more of an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) state machine, a digital signal processor, a gate array, a microprocessor, or an equivalent discrete or integrated logic circuit. The control electronics may include a memory containing instructions that cause one or more components of the circuit to perform the function or embodiment of the control electronics. The functionality attributed to the control electronics in this disclosure may be embodied as one or more of software, firmware, and hardware.

[0076] The electronic circuitry may include a microprocessor, which may be a programmable microprocessor. The electronic circuitry may be configured to regulate the supply of electrical power. The electrical power may be supplied to the heating element in the form of current pulses.

[0077] In some embodiments, the control electronics may be configured to monitor the electrical resistance of the heating element and to control the supply of power to the heating element in response to the electrical resistance of the heating element. In this manner, the control electronics may regulate the temperature of the resistive element.

[0078] The shisha device may include a temperature sensor, such as a thermocouple. The temperature sensor may be operably coupled to the control electronics to control the temperature of the heating element. The temperature sensor may be located in any suitable location. For example, the temperature sensor may be configured to be inserted into the cartridge when received in the receptacle to monitor the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate being heated. Additionally or alternatively, the temperature sensor may be in contact with the heating element. Additionally or alternatively, the temperature sensor may be positioned to detect a temperature at the aerosol outlet of the shisha device or a portion thereof. The sensor may send a signal related to the sensed temperature to the control electronics. The control electronics may adjust the heating of the heating element in response to the signal to achieve a suitable temperature at the sensor.

[0079] In some embodiments, the aerosol generating device may have a piercing element configured to create one or more openings in the capsule. For example, the aerosol generating device may have a piercing element configured to create one or more openings in the bottom of the capsule, while the top, the side, or both the top and the side of the capsule include a heat-deformable material. In another example, the aerosol generating device may have a piercing element configured to create one or more openings in the top of the capsule, while the bottom, the side, or both the bottom and the side of the capsule include a heat-deformable material. The piercing element may include one or more spikes, blades, needles. The piercing element may be configured to pierce one or more walls of the capsule when the capsule is placed in the aerosol generating device. The aerosol generating device may be a shisha device. The shisha device may include a receptacle. The piercing element may be disposed in the receptacle. For example, the piercing element may be disposed in the bottom, the top, or both the bottom and the top of the receptacle.

[0080] The shisha device may further include a sensor configured to detect the presence of a capsule in the receptacle. In particular, the shisha device may include a sensor configured to detect the presence of a capsule and whether the capsule has an opening or whether the opening is created by heating the capsule. The shisha cartridge may be configured to initiate a first stage of heating when a capsule that does not include an opening is detected.

[0081] The control electronics may be operably coupled to a power source. The shisha device may include any suitable power source. For example, the power source of the shisha device may be a battery or a set of batteries. The battery of the power source may be rechargeable, or may be removable and replaceable, or may be rechargeable, removable and replaceable. Any suitable battery may be used. For example, a commercially available heavy duty type battery or a standard battery (such as a battery used for industrial heavy duty power tools). Alternatively, the power source may be any type of power source, including a supercapacitor or hypercapacitor. Alternatively, the assembly may be connected to an external power source and may be electrically and electronically designed for such purpose. Regardless of the type of power source employed, the power source preferably provides sufficient energy for the normal functioning of the assembly for at least one shisha session until the aerosol is depleted from the aerosol-forming substrate in the cartridge before being recharged or requiring connection to an external power source. Preferably, the power source provides sufficient energy for the normal functioning of the assembly for at least about 70 minutes of continuous operation of the device before being recharged or requiring connection to an external power source.

[0082] In one embodiment, a shisha device includes an aerosol generating element including a cartridge receptacle, a heating element, an aerosol outlet, and an ambient air inlet. The cartridge receptacle is configured to receive a cartridge according to the present disclosure that contains an aerosol-forming substrate. The heating element may define at least a portion of a surface of the receptacle.

[0083] The shisha device includes an outside air inlet channel in fluid communication with the receptacle. In use, when the substrate within the cartridge is heated, the aerosol former component in the substrate vaporizes. Air flowing through the cartridge from the outside air inlet channel becomes entrained with aerosol generated from the aerosol former component in the cartridge.

[0084] Some electrically heated shisha devices employ preheated air and typically employ airflow paths so that the air moves close to the heat source as the smoke is drawn in. Additionally, some electrically heated shisha devices employ elements that increase radiative heat transfer by increasing the heated surface area.

[0085] The fresh air inlet channel may include one or more openings through the cartridge receptacle such that fresh air from outside the shisha device can flow through the channel and into the cartridge receptacle through the one or more openings. When the channel includes two or more openings, the channel may include a manifold for directing air flowing through the channel to each opening. Preferably, the shisha device includes two or more fresh air inlet channels.

[0086] As described above, the cartridge includes one or more openings (such as inlets or outlets) formed in the body to allow air to flow through the cartridge. If the receptacle includes one or more inlet openings, at least some of the inlets in the cartridge may align with openings in the top of the receptacle. The cartridge may include alignment features configured to mate with complementary alignment features of the receptacle to align the inlets of the cartridge with the openings of the receptacle when the cartridge is inserted into the receptacle.

[0087] Air entering the cartridge may flow across or through or across and through the aerosol-forming substrate, entraining the aerosol and exiting the cartridge and receptacle via the aerosol outlet, from which the air carrying the aerosol enters the vessel of the shisha device.

[0088] The shisha device may include any suitable vessel that defines an interior volume configured to contain a liquid and defines an outlet in a headspace above a liquid fill level. The vessel may include an optically transparent or opaque housing that allows a consumer to observe the contents contained within the vessel. The vessel may include a liquid fill boundary, such as a liquid fill line. The vessel housing may be formed of any suitable material. For example, the vessel housing may include glass or a suitable rigid plastic material. Preferably, the vessel is removable from a portion of the shisha assembly that includes the aerosol generating element to allow a consumer to fill, empty, or clean the vessel.

[0089] The vessel may be filled by the consumer to a liquid-fill level. The liquid preferably comprises water, which may optionally be infused with one or more colors, flavors, or colorants and flavors. For example, the water may be infused with one or both of botanical and herbal infusions.

[0090] Aerosol entrained in the air exiting the aerosol outlet of the receptacle may travel through a conduit positioned within the vessel. The conduit may be connected to the aerosol outlet of the aerosol generating element or may have an opening below the liquid fill level of the vessel such that the aerosol flowing through the vessel passes through an opening in the conduit, then through the liquid, into the headspace of the vessel and out through the headspace outlet for delivery to a consumer.

[0091] The headspace outlet may be coupled to a hose including a mouthpiece for delivering the aerosol to a consumer. The mouthpiece may include an activation element, such as a user-activatable switch, a puff sensor arranged to detect a user's puff at the mouthpiece, or both a user-activatable switch and a puff sensor. The activation element is operably coupled to the control electronics of the shisha device. The activation element may be wirelessly coupled to the control electronics. Activation of the activation element may cause the control electronics to activate the heating element, rather than constantly supplying energy to the heating element. Thus, the use of an activation element may function to conserve energy compared to devices not employing such elements, providing on-demand heating rather than constant heating.

[0092] For illustrative purposes, one method for using a shisha device as described herein is provided below in chronological order. The vessel may be removed from other components of the shisha device and filled with water. One or more of natural fruit juice, botanical infusions, and herbal infusions may be added to the water for flavoring. The amount of liquid added should cover a portion of the conduit but not exceed a fill level mark that may be optionally present on the vessel. The vessel is then reassembled to the shisha device. The cartridge may be prepared by removing any removable layer (if present). A portion of the aerosol generating element may be removed or opened to allow the cartridge to be inserted into the receptacle. The aerosol generating element may then be reassembled or closed. The device may then be turned on. By turning on the device, the heat-deformable portion of the cartridge is heated and an opening is formed or exposed in the wall of the cartridge, and then the heating profile of the heating element can be initialized to heat the aerosol-forming substrate to a temperature equal to or higher than the vaporization temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate, but below the combustion temperature. The aerosol-forming compound of the aerosol-forming substrate vaporizes and generates an aerosol. The user can puff on the mouthpiece as desired. The user may continue to use the device for a desired length or until no aerosol is visible or delivered. In some embodiments, the device may be arranged to automatically shut off when the cartridge, or a compartment of the cartridge, is depleted of available aerosol-forming substrate. In some embodiments, the consumer may refill the device with an unused cartridge, for example after receiving a signal from the device that the aerosol-forming substrate in the cartridge is depleted or nearly depleted. The shisha device may be turned off at any time by the consumer, for example by switching off the device.

[0093] The shisha device may have any suitable air management. In one embodiment, a puff from the user creates a puff effect, causing low pressure inside the device, which causes outside air to flow through the air inlet of the device, into the outside air inlet channel, and into the receptacle. The air then flows through the cartridge in the receptacle and may become entrained in the aerosol generated from the aerosol-forming substrate. The air with the entrained aerosol then exits the aerosol outlet of the receptacle and flows through a conduit into the liquid inside the vessel. The aerosol then bubbles out of the liquid, enters the headspace above the level of the liquid in the vessel, exits the headspace outlet, and passes through the hose and mouthpiece for delivery to the consumer. The flow of outside air and the flow of aerosol inside the shisha device may be driven by the puff from the user.

[0094] In some embodiments, the method includes placing the cartridge in a receptacle of a shisha device. The cartridge may include a body having a side wall and a bottom wall, and a cavity inside the body. An aerosol-generating substrate may be disposed in the cavity. One or more of the walls of the body may include a heat-deformable portion configured to form an opening in response to exposure of the heat-deformable portion to a temperature above a threshold temperature. The cavity may be in fluid communication with the outside of the cartridge body through the formed opening. The shisha device may include a receptacle for receiving the cartridge, a heating element for heating the cartridge, an aerosol conduit for conveying the aerosol from the receptacle to a vessel having a liquid fill level and defining a headspace above the liquid fill level, and an outlet in fluid communication with the headspace. The heating element may be activated to heat the heat-deformable portion above a threshold temperature. Heating with the heating element may form an opening in the heat-deformable portion and place the cavity in fluid communication with the aerosol conduit. In some embodiments, the aerosol-forming substrate includes tobacco. In some embodiments, the aerosol-forming substrate comprises a shisha substrate, such as a hookah tobacco.

[0097] 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view of one embodiment of a shisha device 100. The device 100 includes a vessel 17 defining an interior volume configured to contain a liquid 19 and defining a headspace outlet 15 above a fill level for the liquid 19. The liquid 19 preferably includes water, which may optionally be infused with one or more colorants, one or more flavorants, or one or more colorants and one or more flavorants. For example, the water may be infused with one or both of a botanical infusion and an herbal infusion.

[0098] The device 100 also includes an aerosol generating element 130. The aerosol generating element 130 includes a receptacle 140 configured to receive a cartridge 200 that includes an aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol generating element 130 may also include a heating element 160. The heating element 160 may form at least one surface of the receptacle 140. In the illustrated embodiment, the heating element 160 defines the sides and the top surface of the receptacle 140. The heating element 160 is constructed to heat the cartridge 200. The aerosol generating element 130 also includes an outside air inlet channel 170 that draws outside air into the device 100. In some embodiments, a portion of the outside air inlet channel 170 is formed by the heating element 160 to heat the air before it enters the receptacle 140. The preheated air then enters the cartridge 200, which is also heated by the heating element 160, and carries the aerosol generated by the aerosol former and the aerosol-forming substrate. The air exits the outlet of the aerosol generating element 130 and enters the conduit 190.

[0099] A conduit 190 carries the air and aerosol below the level of the liquid 19 in the vessel 17. The air and aerosol may bubble through the liquid 19 and exit the headspace outlet 15 of the vessel 17. A hose 20 may be attached to the headspace outlet 15 for carrying the aerosol to the user's mouth. A mouthpiece 25 may be attached to or form part of the hose 20.

[0100] Exemplary airflow paths through the device in use are illustrated by the bold arrows in FIG.

[0101] Mouthpiece 25 may include an activation element 27. Activation element 27 may be a switch, button, or the like, or may be an inhalation sensor, or the like. Activation element 27 may be located in any other suitable location on device 100. Activation element 27 may wirelessly communicate with control electronics 30 to, for example, activate device 100 for use by causing power source 35 to power heating element 160, or to cause the control electronics to activate heating element 160.

[0102] The control electronics 30 and power supply 35 may be located in any suitable location on the aerosol generation element 130, including locations other than at the bottom portion of the element 130 as illustrated in FIG.

[0103] 2A and 2B, various embodiments of the body 210 of the cartridge 200 are shown. The body 210 may include a side wall 212, a top wall 215, and a bottom wall 213 that define a cavity 218. The side wall 212 may be cylindrical or frustoconical, as shown. FIG. 2A shows the body 210 without the top, showing the cavity 218 inside the body. The body 210 may define a central axis A that extends through the body 210. As shown in FIG. 2B, the top may include a flange 219 extending from the side wall 212. The flange 219 may be positioned to rest on a shoulder of a receptacle of a shisha device such that the cartridge 200 may be easily removed from the receptacle after use by gripping the flange.

[0104] 3A and 3B, generally, the top 215 and bottom 213 of the body may have a number of openings 217, 216 to allow airflow through the cartridge when the cartridge is in use. The openings 216, 217 in the top 215 and bottom 213 may be aligned with one another. The cartridge 200 may also, or alternatively, include openings along the sidewall 212.

[0105] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, the openings 216, 217 are initially closed by heat deformable portions 317. The heat deformable portions may be provided on the top 215, bottom 213, or sidewalls 212, or a combination thereof (such as both the top 215 and bottom 213). Although Figures 4A-10B illustrate the bottom 213, the embodiment may be equally applied to the top 215 or sidewalls 212.

[0106] 4A and 4B respectively show the bottom 213 of the cartridge before (FIG. 4A, closed state) and after (FIG. 4B, open state) exposure to a temperature equal to or greater than the threshold temperature. The wall (e.g., bottom 213) has a first surface 225 and an opposing second surface 235. In some embodiments, the first surface 225 is an outer surface and the second surface 235 is an inner surface. In the closed state, the wall includes one or more heat deformable portions 317. In the open state, after exposure to a temperature equal to or greater than the threshold temperature, the wall includes an opening 217 formed from or in the heat deformable portion 317. Cross-sectional views of various exemplary embodiments of the heat deformable portion 317 are shown in FIGS. 5A-9B.

[0107] 5A and 5B show a cross-section of the cartridge bottom 213 formed from a layer of a first material 227 adjacent to a layer of a second material 237. The first material 227 is a heat deformable material and the second material 237 is not heat deformable. The layer of the second material 237 can have a preformed opening 207 extending therethrough. Before being exposed to a temperature equal to or greater than the first threshold temperature (FIG. 5A, closed state), the layer of the first material 227 forms a heat deformable portion 317 that covers the preformed opening 207 in the layer of the second material 237. When the cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) is exposed to a temperature equal to or greater than the first threshold temperature, the heat deformable portion 317 deforms to form the opening 217. The opening 217 extends through the bilayered wall to allow airflow 900 through the wall (open state, FIG. 5B).

[0108] In another embodiment shown in Figures 6A and 6B, the cartridge bottom 213 is made of a single layer with a thinner portion or partial opening 207. In the closed state (Figure 6A), the bottom 213 has an area of a first thickness T1, and in the area of the partial opening 207, the heat deformable portion 317 has a second thickness T2. The second thickness T2 is smaller than the first thickness T1. When the cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) is exposed to a temperature equal to or greater than a first threshold temperature, the material of the heat deformable portion 317 is deformed, thereby forming the opening 217. For example, when the cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) is exposed to a temperature equal to or greater than a threshold temperature, the material of the heat deformable portion 317 is broken, forming the opening 217. The opening 217 extends through the wall, thereby allowing the airflow 900 to pass through the wall (open state, Figure 6B).

[0109] 7A and 7B show a cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) where the heat deformable portion 317 is formed by a gas pocket 307. The gas pocket 307 may be provided by a porous closed cell material in some embodiments. In the closed state (FIG. 7A), the gas pocket 307 causes the material 227 to thin in areas adjacent to the gas pocket. When the cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) is exposed to a temperature equal to or greater than a threshold temperature, the gas pocket 307 may break and / or the material of the heat deformable portion 317 may deform, forming an opening 217. The opening 217 extends through the wall, allowing airflow 900 through the wall (open state, FIG. 7B).

[0110] 8A and 8B show a cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) formed from a layer of a first material 227 adjacent to a layer of a second material 237. The first material 227 is a heat deformable material. The second material 237 may be an open cell foam containing gas pockets 307. At least some of the gas pockets 307 are connected to form openings 207 extending through the layer. Prior to exposure to a temperature equal to or greater than the threshold temperature (FIG. 8A, closed state), the layer of first material 227 forms a heat deformable portion 317 that covers the pre-formed openings 207 in the layer of second material 237. When the cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) is exposed to a temperature equal to or greater than the threshold temperature, the heat deformable portion 317 deforms to form the openings 217. The openings 217 extend through the bi-layered wall, allowing airflow 900 through the wall (open state, FIG. 8B).

[0111] As shown in Figures 9A and 9B, the preformed openings 207 in the wall may be covered by a shape memory material 247. The shape memory material 247 may include, for example, multiple pieces of material each covering a preformed opening 207, as shown, or in some embodiments, the shape memory material may be provided as a single sheet covering multiple preformed openings 207 (closed position, Figure 9A). When the cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) is exposed to a temperature equal to or greater than a threshold temperature, the shape memory material 247 changes shape (e.g., shrinks, bends, or curls, as shown in Figure 9B) to form openings 217. The openings 217 extend through the wall, thereby allowing airflow 900 through the wall (open position, Figure 9B).

[0112] FIG. 10A illustrates an embodiment in which the cartridge bottom 213, prior to exposure to a temperature equal to or greater than the threshold temperature, has a partially cut hole 319 or slit that forms the heat deformable portion 317. For example, the material may have a partially cut hole, where a portion of the circumference of the hole is cut or perforated without removing any material. The edges of the material on either side of the slit or cut may be in contact with each other before the heat deformable material is heated to the threshold temperature such that the wall is in a closed state (FIG. 10A). As shown in FIG. 10B, when the cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) is exposed to a temperature equal to or greater than the threshold temperature, the heat deformable material of the wall deforms (e.g., shrinks or curls) and an opening 217 is formed adjacent the partially cut hole 319 or slit in the material. In some embodiments, the heat deformable material may be a shape memory material such that the deformation is substantially reversible. The cartridge wall (e.g., bottom 213) may be formed of a single layer or may include two or more layers. The cartridge walls (eg, bottom 213) may optionally be covered with a removable film or sticker to prevent leakage through partially cut holes or slits.
