[0001] (CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS) This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62,894,323, filed August 30, 2019, U.S. Nonprovisional Patent Application No. 16 / 985,836, filed August 5, 2020, U.S. Nonprovisional Patent Application No. 16 / 985,851, filed August 5, 2020, and U.S. Nonprovisional Patent Application No. 17 / 004,674, filed August 27, 2020, the contents of which are incorporated by reference in their entireties herein. [Background technology]
[0002] Printing with edible inks onto food products is done for the purpose of identifying, marking, decorating, or personalizing the food product. For example, a food product such as a cookie, whether frosted or plain, can be printed with a selected design by passing it under a print head that ejects edible ink onto the top surface of the cookie.
[0003] Currently, a conveyor belt system or tray is used where one or more cookies are spaced in an array on the conveyor belt or tray and passed under the print head of the printer. Alternatively, labels made of edible paper can be printed with edible ink and applied to the food item with an edible adhesive such as frosting or icing.
[0004] Prior art systems capable of printing images onto an array of food products supported on a conveyor belt or tray with two or more rows of food products require larger, more expensive printers on the scale of commercial printers, and such systems also typically require sophisticated sensing systems to locate the position of each food item for printing.
[0005] In prior art systems, loading and unloading food products onto a tray or conveyor while it is being printed is generally not practical. The conveyor or tray is often not accessible while the products are being printed. It is also difficult to accurately load food products onto a moving conveyor or tray. It is also difficult to load food products onto a moving conveyor or tray without adversely affecting the print quality of the image currently being printed. [0049] The food product printing system of the present disclosure includes a printer system for printing an image onto a surface of a food product. The printing surface may be the actual surface of the food product itself. The printer system includes a printer having a receiving arm and a delivery tray supported on a base. The system also includes a plurality of different trays, each of which may be configured for sequential delivery of a varying number of food products and / or for food products of different or specific dimensions.
[0050] The receiving arm is configured to receive the food product from the delivery tray and move the food product from the delivery tray into the printer and to a printing position. The printing position is substantially below the print head of the printer such that the surface to be printed is in the path of the print head. Once the food product is printed, the receiving arm returns the printed food product to the delivery tray. The delivery tray is also configured to move in one or more directions to continuously and automatically deliver multiple food items sequentially to the receiving arm.
[0051] One embodiment of a printing system 10 is generally illustrated in Figures 1-10. The printing system 10 is configured to receive food products 12 from a delivery tray 22, print on the surface of the food products 12, and return the food products 12 to the delivery tray 22. The system is also configured to do so automatically and continuously for a predetermined number of food items. The system 10 includes a printer 14 having a print head 16 and a nozzle (not shown), the print head 16 and nozzle configured for printing with edible ink. The printer 14 supports an extendable and retractable receiving arm 20.
[0052] The receiving arm 20 is operatively connected to a power source within the printer 14. The receiving arm 20 is extendable and retractable relative to a location in the path of the print head 16. The receiving arm 20 has a first end, a second opposing end, and a substantially flat receiving surface extending therebetween. The first end is operatively connected to a mechanism for retracting and extending the arm 20. The second end and at least a portion of the receiving surface of the receiving arm 20 are configured to extend outwardly from the printer 14. When extended, the receiving arm 20 may receive a food product, hold a food product, and / or return a printed food product to the delivery tray 22. The receiving arm holds or supports a food product within the printer 14 and during printing on the surface of the food product 12.
[0053] With respect to the printer 14, the print head 16 moves linearly back and forth along a gantry in the manner of a standard inkjet printer to eject (edible) ink towards a printing surface, thus printing preselected content onto a printing surface positioned below the path of the print head 16. The printer 14 is in communication with a controller and software may be used to control the printing of content onto one or more food products.
[0054] More specifically, the receiving arm 20 moves in a direction perpendicular to the print head path such that the receiving arm 20 extends and retracts across or through the path of the print head 16. In one embodiment, the receiving arm 20 is a substantially flat rectangular support plate that extends towards a retainer 26 of the delivery tray 22 to engage and remove the food product 12 from the delivery tray 22 and to return the printed food product to the delivery tray. The upper surface of the receiving arm 20 is a receiving surface for the food product and may be textured or provided with a surface to increase the coefficient of friction between the receiving arm 20 and the food product to retain the food product on the arm 20.
[0055] The receiving arm extends to receive or return the food product 12 from the tray 22 and retracts to a position below the print head 16 and into the printer 14 for printing. Once the content is printed on the food product, the receiving arm 20 extends to return the food product 12 to the delivery tray 22. The delivery tray 22 then advances to provide the second unprinted food product 12 to the receiving arm 20. The receiving arm 20 is also configured for vertical movement such that the receiving surface of the receiving arm 20 is movable between two positions, a raised position and a lowered position, which allow the receiving arm 20 to retrieve and return the food product 12 to the delivery tray 22 and may allow the delivery tray 22 to advance when the receiving arm 20 is extended. Once loaded, the receiving arm 20 is retracted to a printing position with the food product 12 thereon. This process continues continuously and automatically until a predetermined amount of food product has been printed. It is also envisioned that the delivery tray may also be raised or lowered to allow the delivery tray 22 to advance to a subsequent holder 26 or opening 28 on the delivery tray 22 for automatically delivering and receiving multiple food items and therefore printing.
[0056] As illustrated in FIGS. 4-7 and 10, a base 40 for providing power and controlling the advancement and vertical positioning of the delivery tray 22 is positioned adjacent or near the printing system. The tray base 40 is spaced from the printer 14 and may be removably connected to the printer 14 via a connecting arm 50 that extends from a housing 52 of the tray base 40 to a removable connection or coupling to a housing of the printer 14. The housing 52 further includes a rotatable cover 45. The cover 45 is operably rotatable about an axis of the tray base 40 with a drive train within the housing 52 that transmits torque to the cover 45. The arm 50 positions the tray base 40 at an adjustable distance from the printer 14 and the receiving arm 20 to accommodate the delivery tray 22 supported thereon. The tray base 40 may be operably connected to a controller and a power supply of the printer 14 to control the movement of the tray 22 in a synchronized manner with the printer 14.
[0057] 8-10, the delivery tray 22 is comprised of a plurality of holders 26, as described in further detail below. Each holder 26 is configured to receive, support, and deliver a food product 12 to the receiving arm 20. The delivery tray shown includes twelve (12) holders 26, however, trays for holding fewer or more food products are envisioned and within the scope of the present disclosure. The number of holders on a tray can be adjusted based on the type or size of the item being printed.
[0058] More specifically, in one embodiment, each holder 26 has two support sides 24 extending from a central area of the tray 22 and an opening 28 between the support sides 24. A food product is supported on the holder by being placed on the two support sides 24 of the holder. The opening 28 between the sides 24 of the holder 26 is configured to receive the receiving arm 20 therein, allowing the receiving arm 20 to assume a position to receive and return the food product to the delivery tray 22. That is, the receiving arm 20 can extend into this opening 28 and contact the bottom surface of the food product 12 supported on the sides 24 of the holder 26. The receiving arm 20 then supports the food product 12 thereon as it is retracted into position for printing.
[0059] It is also envisioned and within the scope of the present disclosure that each holder 26 of the tray 22 may comprise a single food product support surface instead of two support sides 24. Such a single food product support surface may comprise, for example, a narrow support surface for each food product in the manner of one support side 24. Thus, the food products 12 are loaded onto the single food product support surface such that the food products 12 are positioned centrally on the single food product support surface. In such an embodiment, the receiving arm 20 may then comprise a platform having two opposing support sides and an open space therebetween. The open space is provided to receive the single food product support surface therebetween. In such an embodiment, the receiving arm 20 and the platform extend to the tray 22, and the two support sides of the platform are positioned on either side of the single food product support surface of the tray 22 for transferring the food products between the platform and the tray 22.
[0060] In the illustrated embodiment, each retainer 26 is configured to support or hold one or more sides, edges, or perimeters of the food product 12 via contact between the support side 24 and the bottom surface of the food product 12. The retainers 26 may have one or more positioning mechanisms 30 for indicating the position of the food product 12 when loaded onto the delivery tray 22. A positioning mechanism 30 is provided, for example, on each of the support sides 24. Utilizing the positioning mechanisms 30 to set the position of the food product 12 during loading of the delivery tray 22 ensures delivery of the food product 12 to the receiving arm 20 such that the food product 12 is balanced on and supported by the receiving arm 20, and ensures that the surface of the food product is centered for printing of content onto the food product.
[0061] In one or more embodiments, the delivery tray 22 includes one or more positioning mechanisms 30, which may include, for example, one or more positioning elements 32, which are strategically and selectively positioned on the tray 22 to allow for easy loading and unloading of the food products 12 on the delivery tray 22. The elements 32 may be posts, arms, or other mechanisms configured to provide a visual or tactile indicator of the location of the food products 12 to be loaded onto the tray 22. In a non-limiting example of the illustrated embodiment, the elements 32 are configured to protrude upward from a connection with the tray 22 and mark a placement location for the food products 12 on the delivery tray 22. In addition, the positioning elements 32 serve as a guide for loading and positioning the food products 12 on the tray, for example, when the food products are being loaded onto the tray 22. The positioning elements 32 serve as a guide for fast and efficient loading and positioning of the food products when the food products are pushed, slid, or placed onto the retainers 26 of the delivery tray 22. The guides limit and guide the position of the food product and prevent the food product from taking a position on the tray 22 that is not aligned with the retainer 26. The elements 32 may be provided in pairs, which protrude from a location above a corresponding one on the support side 24 of each retainer 26. The tray 22 may include alternative positioning for the elements 32 to accommodate food products 12 of different sizes, shapes, and types. For example, the elements 32 are positioned on the tray 22 such that when placed on the retainer 26, the front and / or sides of the food item contact and abut the elements 32 to ensure the food product 12 is sufficiently placed for delivery to the receiving arm 20.
[0062] The positioning mechanism 30 allows for sufficiently accurate and easy loading of trays with unprinted food products so that the food products received on the delivery tray 22 are delivered precisely to a selected mutual position on the receiving arm 20 for printing. In some embodiments, this can eliminate the need for a sensor or other mechanism to detect the position of the food products on the receiving arm for printing.
[0063] The loading of the delivery tray 22 with the unprinted food products 12 can be done manually or in an automatic fashion. Thus, the system can be used in conjunction with a conveyor or other automatic arm or other automated delivery system to deliver the unprinted food products 12 to the delivery tray 22 and / or to remove the printed food products 12 from the delivery tray 22.
[0064] In one or more embodiments, the positioning mechanism 30 includes one or more positioning elements 32 having a radius of approximately 1 / 8 inch at the point where the element joins or meets the surface of the delivery tray, which allows for easy cleaning of the tray 22 per NSF standards.
[0065] The delivery tray 22 advances with respect to the openings 28 such that the delivery tray 22 automatically advances from one opening 28 to the next adjacent opening 28 after the food product 12 is returned to the tray 22 by the receiving arm 20. For example, in the illustrated embodiment, the delivery tray 22 is a generally round tray that is rotatable about its center to advance the position of the retainer 26 for delivery of the subsequent food product 12 to the receiving arm 20. The retainers 26 are spaced around the circumference of the delivery tray 22. The delivery tray 22 and base 40 can be a carousel for continuous delivery, loading, and reloading of unprinted food products after the printed food products are returned to the delivery tray 22 and subsequently removed. Although a rotatable tray is illustrated herein, the delivery tray 22 can be advanced linearly, moved in multiple directions, or moved in the manner of a conveyor belt, as non-limiting examples. That is, the printed and advanced food product may be removed and a new unprinted food product 12 placed on the tray 22 as the delivery tray 22 advances to the next adjacent opening 28 for purposes of delivering one or more subsequent food products 12 to the printer 14. Thus, the delivery of unprinted food products and the receipt of such food products after printing is cyclical in nature and may be limited only by the supply or selection of a predetermined amount to be printed, for example.
[0066] As previously described, the retainers 26 are generally spaced around the perimeter of the delivery tray 22, and the retainers 26 have dimensions that allow the position of the food product 12 to be loaded onto the tray 22 in a known position. When the food product 12 is delivered to the receiving arm 20, the position of the printing surface of the food product 12 relative to the print head 16 is known when the receiving arm 20 is retracted. This allows for the elimination of sensors or other location or item detection means and other delays due to location or position detection before printing. Instead, printing can begin upon retraction of the receiving arm 20. This allows the automated process to proceed continuously and efficiently at an increased speed.
[0067] The delivery tray 22 moves about an operable connection with the base 40. The delivery tray 22 may rotate or advance in a linear fashion or in other directional movements that advance the delivery tray from one opening 28 to the next adjacent opening 28. In one non-limiting embodiment, the delivery tray 22 rotates about an operable connection with the base 40 as shown.
[0068] Although the illustrated embodiment shows the delivery tray 22 mounted in a position on or above the base 40, in one or more embodiments, the mounting mechanism may include alternative mounting mechanisms, for example, the delivery tray 22 is rotated and / or secured from a connection above the tray 22 whereby the tray 22 is secured to the base for movement using a mechanism such as an arm or crane.
[0069] 5-9, the delivery tray 22 is operably and removably connectable to the base 40 about one or more connectors or receiving mechanisms 43 positioned on the delivery tray 22. These connectors 43 may include one or more drive posts 47 that both drive the rotation of the delivery tray 22 and position the delivery tray 22 relative to the base 40. The tray 22 may additionally include another receiving element 42 that may be positioned in a central area of the tray 22, which connects to a positioning element 46 of the base 40. In embodiments where a receiving element 42 and a positioning element 46 are provided, in addition to one or more connectors 43 and drive posts 47, the positioning element 46 laterally positions the delivery tray 22 relative to the base 40. In embodiments where a positioning element 46 and a corresponding receiving element 42 of the tray 22 are not present, the one or more drive posts 47 may also be used to laterally position the delivery tray 22 relative to the base 40.
[0070] The connectors or positioning elements 42 and / or 43 of the delivery tray 22 may be concave members relative to the bottom surface of the tray and thus convex portions on the top surface of the tray 22. These openings 42 and 43 have inner surfaces configured to mate with and / or receive and engage the respective positioning elements 46 and / or drive posts 47. The positioning posts and / or drive posts may also have tapered surfaces thereon, which aid in proper installation of the tray 22 in an easier and more efficient (e.g., quicker) manner. Such connections between the positioning elements 46 and / or drive posts 47 and the corresponding connectors or positioning elements 42 and / or 43 further enable the tray 22 to generally or substantially maintain rotation when inadvertently bumped.
[0071] Each delivery tray 22 includes a mutual positioning element 42 configured to mate with a corresponding positioning element 46 on the tray base 40. The tray base 40, and the connection between the tray base 40 and the tray 22, are configured to support the tray 22 in an upright position, with the food support surface being the upper surface and the tray in a substantially horizontal position to support food products thereon in a moveable manner. The positioning element 46 is generally a central positioning element 46 located approximately at the center of the tray base 40, and the corresponding positioning element 42 may be substantially centered on the bottom surface of the tray 22 or at the center of gravity of the delivery tray 22. Thus, the mutual positioning element 46 of the tray base 40 may be a post or other protrusion extending from the tray base 40. The positioning element 42 on the tray 22 may then be a hole or concave portion from the bottom of the tray 22, or other divot that provides a convex portion on the top of the tray 22 and has a surface with inner dimensions to substantially match the outer dimensions of the positioning element 46, allowing the tray 22 to rotate or move about it. The positioning element 46 thus allows the delivery tray 22 to be operatively supported thereon.
[0072] In more detail, in one embodiment, the tray base 40 also includes one or more drive posts 44 that extend upward from the upper cover 45 of the housing 52 of the tray base 40 and engage with the receiving mechanism 43 of the tray 22 to rotate the tray 22. The centering element 46 and the drive post or posts 44 automatically position the center of the delivery tray 22 during installation of the tray 22 and effect the movement of the tray 22. The drive posts 44 drive the tray 22, for example, rotate the tray 22, and continuously and automatically bring the food products 12 to and from the receiving arm 20. The drive posts 44 can be tapered drive posts 47 that are integrally connected to and rotate with the rotation of the upper cover 45. The drive posts 47 then frictionally engage or positively but removably engage with a corresponding receiving or driving mechanism 43, such as an opening on the bottom of the tray 22. Together, these elements allow movement of the upper cover 43 to move the drive posts 44, which then transmit the motion to the tray 22. At the same time, once the tray 22 is set on the tray base 40, thus allowing gravity and / or the weight of the tray 22 itself to maintain it on the drive posts 44 and positioning posts 46, the tapered drive posts 44 also allow the delivery tray 22 to break free of its removable connection to the tray base 40 without damaging the gear train within the tray base 40. In the event of an external force occurring, such as a collision with the delivery tray 22, as may occur when loading or unloading the tray 22, the tray 22 will rotate and ride up the tapered drive posts 44 and be lifted off the tray base 40 without damage to the gear train of the tray base 40. The tapered drive post 44 also prevents interference with the movement of the tray 22 from unintended external forces, such as a collision, since the tray 22 can then reorient itself about the drive post 44 and reciprocal drive mechanism 43 and continue operation.
[0073] Each of the one or more drive posts 47 may include a shoulder 48 that is positioned at substantially the same level or height as a plurality of support pads 49 spaced around the exterior periphery of the base 40. For example, the support pads 49 and shoulder 48 of each drive post 47 combine to support the delivery tray 22 in a horizontal position on the tray base 40. In the illustrated embodiment, four support pads 49 are provided on the base 40 to contact the surface of the tray 22 for support and leveling.
[0074] The support pad 49 may support the delivery tray 22 slightly above the major upper side of the base cover 45 (e.g., with about 0.040 inches of space between the top side of the cover 45 and the bottom side of the tray 22). The pad 29 may then also help provide some clearance for debris such as food product crumbs and allow the delivery tray to remain in a substantially horizontal position when coupled to the tray base 40. The pad 49 also allows for some cupping of the base cover 45 and / or delivery tray 22 while maintaining a stable connection (e.g., eliminating rocking of the tray 22) such that a stable connection is allowed between the tray base 40 and the delivery tray 22.
[0075] A drive system is provided within the housing 52 of the base 40 and is connected to the printer's power supply. The connection mechanism between the tray 22 and the base 40 allows the tray to be quickly installed on the base 40 without tools. The tray 22 is configured to be placed on the base 40 with complementary mating of the base elements and tray components of the connection mechanism. The system allows a variety of delivery trays 22 of different sizes and arrangements for holding food products 12 to movably connect to the base 40 with the same type of connection mechanism. Although the above interface is described, alternative interfaces and non-locking mechanisms for transmitting the movement generated at the base 40 to the tray 22 for controlled advancement of the delivery tray 22 are also envisioned.
[0076] It should be understood that while the illustrated embodiment refers to protrusions on the tray base 40 that engage with holes or divots in the tray 22 for connection, alternative configurations are also envisioned. Such configurations include holes or divots in the cover 45 of the tray base 40 that receive protrusions extending from the tray 22 such that the tray engages the tray base 40 with this connection and functions for the transfer of movement from the tray base 40 to the tray 22 in a manner similar to that described herein.
[0077] The incorporation of one or more drive posts 44 provides a visible indication that the delivery tray 22 is or is not properly seated on the tray base 40 to ensure proper installation. The delivery tray 22 will not be seated in a substantially horizontal position if it is not properly seated on the drive posts 44 of the tray base 40.
[0078] In additional or alternative embodiments, the tray base 40 and tray 22 may include various connection mechanisms. For example, two or more drive posts 44 may be used to position the delivery tray 22, thus eliminating the need for the positioning element 46. The drive posts 44 may also be configured to allow continued rotational movement relative to the tray base 40 while preventing translational movement when the delivery tray 22 is bumped. It is also envisioned and within the scope of this disclosure that the positioning element 46 may incorporate features for positioning and driving the delivery tray 22 to eliminate the need for one or more drive posts 44. Additional mechanisms include, but are not limited to, one or more ramps (not depicted) at the outer diameter of the positioning element 46, so that the delivery tray 22 may again rotate but not translate when bumped.
[0079] In one or more of the embodiments described herein and / or alternative embodiments, it is also contemplated and within the scope of the present disclosure that the delivery tray 22 may be driven by the base 40 without including the drive post 44. For example, the tray 22 may be driven by friction or other engagement generated between the base 40 and the tray 22. Irregular features may be provided on one or both of the tray 22 and the base 40 that allow the base 40 and the tray 22 to operably connect to one another. Clips, clasps, and / or other mechanisms for operably connecting may also be provided that allow the base 40 to advance the tray 22 between delivery positions.
[0080] A drive system including a gear train is provided within the housing 52 of the tray base 40 and can be connected to a power source for the printer 14. The system allows a variety of delivery trays 22 of different sizes and arrangements for holding food products 12 to be movably connected to the tray base 40. Although the above interfaces are described, alternative interfaces and non-locking mechanisms for transmitting motion generated at the tray base 40 to the trays 22 for controlled advancement of the delivery trays 22 are also envisioned.
[0081] The tray base 40 may include its own power source for providing the rotational force transmitted from the base 40 to the delivery tray 22, or the tray base 40 may be operatively connected to the power source of the printer 10. Thus, when the delivery tray 22 is positioned on and relative to the base 40 as described above, the tray 22 rotates as controlled by the tray base 40. The tray base 40 communicates with a controller that controls the extension and retraction of the receiving arm 20 and the printing of images onto the received food products 12 such that the rotation of the delivery tray is synchronized with the extension and / or retraction of the receiving arm 20.
[0082] In the illustrated embodiment, the base 40 provides power to rotate the delivery tray 22 between various positions including alignment with the extended receiving arm 20 of the first and one or more subsequent openings 28, and to rotate the delivery tray 22 to advance the delivery tray 22 to the next opening 28 while the receiving arm 20 is extended. In embodiments in which the delivery tray 22 may be in one of two positions (i.e., raised or lowered positions) depending on whether an item is to be delivered to or returned to the tray 22, and to prevent the receiving arm 20 from interfering with the advancement or rotation of the delivery tray 22, the base 40 is then also configured to allow the delivery tray 22 to be moved between the two positions, and thus to raise and lower the tray, or tilt the tray 22 upwards or downwards, at the opening 28 positioned for delivery or return of the food product 12. In such an embodiment, when the receiving arm 20 is extended and positioned within the opening 28, the upper surface of the receiving arm 20 may be substantially flush with the upper surface of the delivery tray 22. To ensure or facilitate the delivery of the food product 12 supported on the delivery tray 22, the delivery tray 22 is tilted or lowered downwards towards the receiving arm 20. This allows the receiving arm 20 to contact and support the bottom surface of the food product 12 and remove support by the delivery tray 22, thereby transferring the food product 12 to the receiving arm 20. Conversely, when the receiving arm 20 is returning the food product after printing, the delivery tray 22 may be provided in a lowered position and then tilted or raised upwards after the receiving arm 20 supporting the food item printed thereon is extended into the opening 28. This allows the retainer 26 to lift the food product from the receiving arm 20 for removal from the print queue.
[0083] In the illustrated embodiment, the food product is a dessert item such as a cookie. However, examples of food items include cookies of various shapes, sizes, and types, but the food items that can be printed using the system are not so limited. Frosting sheets, rice paper, bakery goods, and other food items having at least one substantially flat surface for printing an image can be printed using the system. The delivery tray can be configured with a positioning mechanism that is adjusted to the specific shape, size, thickness, type, etc. of the food product to be printed, and thus the system can be provided as a kit including a printer as described herein that includes a receiving arm and one or more delivery trays for delivery of one or more different food products of various sizes, dimensions, or food products having different dimensions.
[0084] The system further comprises one or more control boards that communicate with a computer or controller to configure and initiate the printing process. However, the delivery tray, in combination with the receiving arm, is configured with one or more positioning mechanisms such that when the food product is delivered to the printer and positioned under the print head, the need for a sensing system or series of sensors to detect the position of the food product is eliminated. Sensors may be utilized within the printer to confirm the presence of the food product in the printer for printing. Sensors may be positioned on the print head and used to detect only the presence of the substrate for printing. The system is a fixed spot printing system, and therefore there is no need for any scanning regarding the position of the printing surface. The system also allows for the loading of non-printed food products and the unloading of printed food products during printing or otherwise "on the fly". The control board or boards enable delivery of a first food product, printing of the first food product, returning of the first food product, advancing of the delivery tray to provide a second food product for delivery, delivery of the second food product, printing of the second food product, returning of the second food product to the delivery tray, and advancing for delivery of one or more subsequent food products for printing and returning. Thus, the system enables the automated delivery, printing thereon, and returning of multiple food products.
[0085] Although the present disclosure has been described with reference to preferred embodiments, workers skilled in the art will recognize that changes may be made in form and detail without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure.
