Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a connector back cover, a connector system, and a method of assembly. [Background technology]
[0002] An example of a known connector rear cover is shown in Figures 1A to 1D. Referring to Figure 1A, the connector rear cover 101 has an opening 129 in its rear wall 139. The opening 129 is configured to receive the conductor 31, as shown in Figure 1B. To assemble a connector system including the connector housing 35, the connector rear cover 101, and the conductor 31, first, the terminal of the conductor 31 is passed through the opening 129 in the rear wall 139 of the connector rear cover 101. Then, as shown in Figure 1B, the terminal of the conductor 31 is crimped. Finally, as shown in Figure 1D, the crimped terminal of the conductor 31 is inserted into the connector housing 35, and the connector rear cover 101 is fixed to the connector housing via a locking means 147.
[0003] To seal the connector housing 35 against environmental conditions such as moisture, the openings 129 in the rear wall 139 of the connector back cover 101 are sized to minimize the gap between the conductors 31 and the connector back cover 101. As shown in FIG. 1C, the crimped terminals of the conductors 31 have a larger diameter than the conductors 31 alone, and therefore the crimped terminals of the conductors 31 do not pass through the openings 129 in the connector back cover 101. As a result, the terminals of the conductors 31 must always be passed through the openings 129 in the rear wall 139 of the connector back cover 101 first, and then the terminals of the conductors 31 are crimped. This means that the connector back cover 101 is already installed during the crimping process, which reduces flexibility and hinders automation of the crimping. In addition, once the terminals of the conductors 31 are crimped, the connector back cover 101 cannot be easily removed thereafter. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0004] As a result, a need remains for a connector rear cover that allows for easy installation and has improved cable management and sealing capabilities. [Means for solving the problem]
[0005] This problem is solved by a connector rear cover that is independent of the corresponding connector housing. The connector rear cover has three parts connected by two hinges, which allows the connector rear cover to be installed and removed even after the wires have been crimped and inserted into the connector. In addition, the connector rear cover has openings that individually surround each wire, thereby providing improved cable management and sealing performance.
[0006] Specifically, the connector rear cover of the present disclosure comprises a middle portion having a first edge and a second edge, a first side portion having a first lateral edge, and a second side portion having a second lateral edge, wherein the first lateral portion is connected to the middle portion by a first hinge and the second lateral portion is connected to the middle portion by a second hinge, such that the connector rear cover is foldable between an open state and a closed state, and wherein the first edge of the middle portion faces the first lateral edge of the first lateral portion and the second edge of the middle portion faces the second lateral edge of the second lateral portion.
[0007] The middle portion includes at least one recess disposed on a first edge of the middle portion and at least one recess disposed on a second edge of the middle portion, the first side portion includes at least one recess disposed on a first lateral edge of the first side portion, and the second side portion includes at least one recess disposed on a second lateral edge of the second side portion. Thereby, the recesses on the edge of the intermediate part, the first lateral part, and the second lateral part are arranged such that for each recess located on the first edge or the second edge of the intermediate part, exactly one recess is located on the first lateral edge of the first lateral part or the second lateral edge of the second lateral part, and the two recesses are positioned to form an opening in the connector rear cover when the connector rear cover is in a closed state, and for each recess located on the first lateral edge of the first lateral part or the second lateral edge of the second lateral part, exactly one recess is located on the first edge or the second edge of the intermediate part, and the two recesses are positioned to form an opening in the connector rear cover when the connector rear cover is in a closed state.
[0008] According to another aspect, the connector rear cover includes four openings in a closed state.
[0009] According to another aspect, each of the openings in the connector rear cover is configured to receive an electrical conductor.
[0010] According to another aspect, each of the openings in the connector rear cover is configured to generally surround the electrical conductor when the connector rear cover is in a closed state. This has the advantage that in the closed state, there is no space between the electrical conductor and the connector rear cover or between two electrical conductors. Thus, the connector rear cover can be used to seal the connector housing against environmental conditions such as moisture.
[0011] According to another aspect, the axis of rotation of the first hinge extends along the axis of rotation of the second hinge.
[0012] According to another aspect, the intermediate portion, the first lateral portion and the second lateral portion each comprise fastening means configured to establish a form fit connection with the connector housing. The fastening means are configured such that the connector rear cover can be secured to the connector housing in a closed state, but such that the connector rear cover cannot be secured in the closed state without being secured to the connector housing. To that end, the fastening means are configured not to engage with each other. This has the advantage that the connector rear cover does not accidentally lock in the closed state prior to installation.
[0013] According to another embodiment, the fastening means comprises a cross hole between the first hinge and the second hinge.
[0014] According to another aspect, the connector rear cover in a closed state includes a rear wall and four side walls essentially transverse to the rear wall.
[0015] According to another aspect, the opening is disposed in a rear wall of the connector rear cover.
[0016] According to another aspect, the first hinge and the second hinge are disposed on the same side wall of the connector rear cover.
[0017] According to another aspect, the side walls of the connector back cover are interconnected by rounded corner ridges that have the advantage that the connector back cover can be easily folded from an open state to a closed state by rotating the first side portion about a first hinge axis and rotating the second side portion about a second hinge axis to surround an object having a corresponding shape with the rounded corner ridges.
[0018] According to another aspect, the rear wall and the side walls of the connector rear cover are interconnected by a chamfered portion, which has the advantage of preventing damage from sharp edges.
[0019] The present disclosure also relates to a connector system comprising a connector housing and a connector rear cover according to any of the above aspects.
[0020] According to another aspect, the connector system further includes a locking mechanism for securing the connector rear cover to the connector housing in the closed position.
[0021] According to another aspect, a locking mechanism for securing the connector rear cover to the connector housing in the closed position includes a snap fit. Such a locking mechanism has the advantage of allowing for easy installation and removal of the connector rear cover.
[0022] The present disclosure also relates to a method for assembling a connector system according to any of the above aspects, the method including the steps of inserting wire terminals into the connector housing, inserting a middle portion of the connector rear cover between the wires, securing the middle portion of the connector rear cover to the connector housing via a locking mechanism, closing a first side portion and a second side portion of the connector rear cover, and securing the first side portion and the second side portion of the connector rear cover to the connector housing in a closed state via the locking mechanism. According to another aspect, the method for assembling the connector system further includes the steps of crimping the wire terminals and inserting the crimped wire terminals into the connector housing.
[0023] The ability to install and remove the connector rear cover even after the wires have been crimped and inserted into the connector allows for more flexible handling of the wires, which makes it possible, for example, to automate the crimping process.

[0026] With reference now to the drawings, and initially to FIG. 2A, the present disclosure will be described in more detail. FIG. 2A is a perspective view of a connector back cover 1 according to the present disclosure. The connector back cover 1 comprises a middle portion 3 having a first edge 13 and a second edge 15, a first side portion 5 having a first lateral edge 17, and a second side portion 7 having a second lateral edge 19. The first side portion 5 is connected to the middle portion 3 by a first hinge 9, and the second side portion 7 is connected to the middle portion 3 by a second hinge 11, such that the connector back cover 1 is foldable between an open state and a closed state. FIG. 2A shows the connector back cover 1 in an open state. FIG. 2B shows the connector back cover 1 in a closed state. In the closed state, the first edge 13 of the intermediate portion 3 faces the first lateral edge 17 of the first lateral portion 5, and the second edge 15 of the intermediate portion 3 faces the second lateral edge 19 of the second lateral portion 5.
[0027] As shown in Fig. 2A, the intermediate portion 3 comprises at least one recess 21 arranged on the first edge 13 of the intermediate portion 3 and at least one recess 23 arranged on the second edge 15 of the intermediate portion 3. In addition, the first lateral portion 5 comprises at least one recess 25 arranged on the first lateral edge 17 of the first lateral portion 5, and the second lateral portion 7 comprises at least one recess 27 arranged on the second lateral edge 19 of the second lateral portion 7. In the example shown in Figs. 2A and 2B, the intermediate portion 3 comprises two recesses 21 arranged on the first edge 13 of the intermediate portion 3 and two recesses 23 arranged on the second edge 15 of the intermediate portion 3. In this example, the first side portion 5 has two recesses 25 arranged on a first side edge 17 of the first side portion 5, and the second side portion 7 has two recesses 27 arranged on a second side edge 19 of the second side portion 7.
[0028] As shown in FIG. 2B , the recesses 21, 23 at the edges 13, 15 of the intermediate portion 3, the first side portion 5, and the second side portion 7 are arranged such that for each recess 21, 23 located at the first edge or second edge 15 of the intermediate portion 3, exactly one recess 25, 27 is located at the first side edge 17 of the first side portion 5 or the second side edge 19 of the second side portion 7, and the two recesses are positioned to form an opening 29 in the connector rear cover 1 when the connector rear cover 1 is in a closed state. In addition, for each recess 25, 27 located on the first lateral edge 17 of the first lateral part 5 or the second lateral edge 19 of the second lateral part 7, exactly one recess 21, 23 is located on the first or second edge 15 of the intermediate part 3, positioned such that the two recesses form an opening 29 in the connector back cover 1 when the connector back cover 1 is in the closed state. This means that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the recesses 21, 23 on the edges 13, 15 of the intermediate part 3 on the one hand and the recesses 25, 27 located on the first lateral edge 17 of the first lateral part 5 and the second lateral edge 19 of the second lateral part 7, respectively.
[0029] 2A and 2B, the two recesses 21 arranged on the first edge 13 of the middle part 3 and the two recesses 25 arranged on the first lateral edge 17 of the first lateral part 5 form two openings 29, and the two recesses 23 arranged on the second edge 15 of the middle part 3 and the two recesses 27 arranged on the second lateral edge 19 of the second lateral part 7 form two openings 29. Thus, in this example, the connector rear cover 1 has four openings 29 in the closed state.
[0030] As shown in Fig. 2B, each opening 29 in the rear connector cover 1 is formed by two corresponding recesses such that in the closed state, the opening 29 is surrounded by the edges of the two recesses, which means that in the closed state, the edges of the openings 29 are closed and any two openings 29 are separated from each other.
[0031] In addition, each of the openings 29 in the connector back cover 1 is configured to receive an electrical conductor 31. In the closed state, the edges of the openings 29 are closed and any two openings 29 are separated from each other, so that the periphery of the electrical conductor 31 received by the openings 29 is entirely surrounded by the edges of the openings 29. Furthermore, each electrical conductor 31 received by the openings 29 is individually surrounded by the edges of the openings 29, i.e., any two electrical conductors 31 received by different openings 29 are separated from each other. This has the advantage that in the closed state, there is no space between the electrical conductor 31 and the connector back cover 1 or between the two electrical conductors 31. Thus, the connector back cover 1 can be used to seal the connector housing 35 against environmental conditions such as moisture.
[0032] As shown in FIG. 2B, the connector back cover 1 in the closed state includes a back wall 39 and four side walls 41. The four side walls 41 are essentially transverse to the back wall 39. The opening 29 is disposed in the back wall 39 of the connector back cover 1. The first hinge 9 and the second hinge 11 are disposed in the side wall 41 of the connector back cover 1. In the example shown in FIG. 2B, the first hinge 9 and the second hinge 11 are disposed in the same side wall 41 of the connector back cover 1. In addition, in the example shown in FIG. 2B, the rotation axis of the first hinge 9 extends along the rotation axis of the second hinge 11, i.e., the rotation axis of the first hinge 9 and the rotation axis of the second hinge 11 are essentially parallel.
[0033] As shown in FIG. 2B, the side walls 41 of the connector back cover 1 are interconnected by corner ridges 43, which may be rounded. The rounded corner ridges 43 have the advantage that the connector back cover 1 can be easily folded from an open state to a closed state to surround an object having a corresponding shape with the rounded corner ridges by rotating the first side portion 5 about the axis of rotation of the first hinge 9 and the second side portion 7 about the axis of rotation of the second hinge 11. If the object and the side walls 41 of the connector back cover 1 have sharp corner ridges, the connector back cover 1 cannot be folded by rotating the first side portion 5 about the axis of rotation of the first hinge 9 and the second side portion 7 about the axis of rotation of the second hinge 11.
[0034] In addition, the rear wall 39 and the side wall 41 of the connector rear cover 1 are interconnected by a portion 45 which may be chamfered, which has the advantage of preventing damage from sharp edges.
[0035] As shown in Figures 2A and 2B, each of the middle part 3, the first side part 5 and the second side part 7 of the connector back cover 1 comprises fastening means 33 configured to establish a form-fit connection with the connector housing 35. In the example shown in Figures 2A and 2B, the fastening means 33 is arranged on the side wall 41 of the connector back cover 1. In this example, the fastening means 33 comprises slots 53 in the side wall, the first side part 5 and the second side part 7 of the middle part 3 of the connector back cover 1. These slots may include a cross hole 37 in the side wall 41 of the middle part 3 between the first hinge 9 and the second hinge 11 and another cross hole 51 (shown in Figure 3A) in the side wall 41 of the middle part 3 opposite the side wall 41 comprising the first hinge 9 and the second hinge 11.
[0036] Additionally, the first side portion 5 may include a hole 65 (shown in FIG. 2B ) in the rounded corner ridge 43 adjacent the hinge 9, and a hole 67 (shown in FIG. 6B ) in the rounded corner ridge 43 opposite the hinge 9. Correspondingly, the second side portion 7 may include a hole 69 (shown in FIG. 2B ) in the rounded corner ridge 43 adjacent the hinge 11, and a hole 71 (not shown) in the rounded corner ridge 43 opposite the hinge 11.
[0037] Importantly, the fastening means 33 are configured such that the connector back cover 1 is fixed to the connector housing 35 in the closed state, but is able to establish a form-fit connection with the connector housing 35 without which the connector back cover 1 cannot be fixed in the closed state without being fixed to the connector housing 35. To that end, the fastening means 33 are configured such that they do not engage with each other. This has the advantage that the connector back cover 1 does not accidentally lock in the closed state before installation.
[0038] The present disclosure also relates to a connector system. An exemplary embodiment of a connector system according to the present disclosure is shown in Figures 3A and 3B. The connector system comprises a connector housing 35 and a connector back cover 1 according to any of the above-mentioned embodiments. Figure 3A is a perspective view of the connector system according to the present disclosure with the connector back cover 1 in an open state, and Figure 3B is a perspective view of the connector system according to the present disclosure with the connector back cover 1 in a closed state.
[0039] As shown in FIG. 3A, the connector housing 35 includes a rear portion 59 having a shape that allows a form-fit connection between the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 and the connector back cover 1. The rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 includes protrusions 61 (shown in FIG. 3B) and 63 (shown in FIG. 3A) on either side of the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35. The protrusions 61 and 63 are arranged to be able to engage with the cross holes 37 and 51, respectively, in the side walls of the intermediate portion 3 of the connector back cover 1. By inserting the protrusions 61 and 63 into the cross holes 37 and 51 in the side walls of the intermediate portion 3 of the connector back cover 1, a form-fit connection is established between the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 and the intermediate portion 3 of the connector back cover 1.
[0040] The connector system includes a locking mechanism 47 for fixing the connector rear cover 1 to the connector housing 35 in the closed state. The locking mechanism 47 for fixing the connector rear cover 1 to the connector housing 35 in the closed state may include a snap-fitting portion 49. As shown in FIG. 3B , the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 includes protrusions 73 and 75 arranged to be able to engage with holes 67 and 71 in the sidewalls of the first side portion 5 of the connector rear cover 1 and the second side portion 7 of the connector rear cover 1, respectively. By inserting the protrusion 73 into the hole 67 in the sidewall of the first side portion 5 of the connector rear cover 1, a form-fit connection is established between the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 and the first side portion 5 of the connector rear cover 1. Correspondingly, by inserting the protrusion 75 into the hole 71 in the sidewall of the second side portion 7 of the connector rear cover 1, a form-fit connection is established between the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 and the second side portion 7 of the connector rear cover 1.
[0041] The rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 may include an additional protrusion and the side wall 41 of the connector back cover 1 may include an additional slot configured to receive the additional protrusion to establish a form-fit connection between the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 and the connector back cover 1. As shown in FIG. 3B , the additional slot may include, for example, holes 65 and 69 in the side walls of the first side portion 5 of the connector back cover 1 and the second side portion 7 of the connector back cover 1, respectively.
[0042] The present disclosure also relates to a method for assembling a connector system according to any of the above-mentioned embodiments. A first method step is shown in Fig. 4. In this step, the wire terminals 57 are inserted into the connector housing 35. Optionally, the wire terminals 57 may be crimped before being inserted into the connector housing 35. At this stage, the wires 55 are not yet bound together by the connector rear cover 1. This has the advantage that the wires 55 can be handled more flexibly, which makes it possible for example to automate the crimping process.
[0043] The second and third method steps are shown in Figures 5A-5D. In the second method step, the middle part 3 of the connector back cover 1 is inserted between the wires 55. For example, as shown in Figure 5A, the middle part 3 of the connector back cover 1 is arranged between the wires 55 such that the wires 55 contact the edges of the middle part 3 of the connector back cover 1 in the recesses. In the example shown in Figures 5A-5D, there are four wires 55, two of which contact the first edge 13 of the middle part 3 of the connector back cover 1 in the two recesses 21 in the first edge of the middle part, and the other two contact the second edge 15 of the middle part 3 of the connector back cover 1 in the two recesses 23 in the second edge of the middle part 3.
[0044] In a third method step, the middle part 3 of the connector back cover 1 is fixed to the connector housing 35 via the locking mechanism 47. Specifically, as shown in Figures 5A and 5B, the protrusion 61 at the rear part 59 of the connector housing 35 is inserted into the cross hole 37 at the side wall 41 of the middle part 3 of the connector back cover 1, and as shown in Figure 5C, the protrusion 63 at the rear part 59 of the connector housing 35 is inserted into the cross hole 51 at the side wall 41 of the middle part 3 of the connector back cover 1.
[0045] The fourth and fifth method steps are shown in Figures 6A and 6B. In the fourth method step, the first side part 5 and the second side part 7 of the connector back cover 1 are folded from the open state to the closed state, so that the first side edge 17 of the first side part 5 contacts the first edge 13 of the middle part 3 and the second side edge 19 of the second side part 7 contacts the second edge 15 of the middle part 3. As shown in Figure 6A, the first side part 5 and the second side part 7 of the connector back cover 1 are arranged around the wire 55 such that the wire 55 contacts the first side edge 17 of the first side part 5 and the second side edge 19 of the second side part 7 in the recess. 6A and 6B, there are four wires 55, two of which contact the first lateral edge 17 of the first side portion 5 of the connector back cover 1 in two recesses 21 in the first lateral edge 17 of the first side portion 5, and two of which contact the second lateral edge 19 of the second side portion 7 of the connector back cover 1 in two recesses 21 in the second lateral edge 19 of the second side portion 7. As shown in FIG. 6A, these recesses form openings 29 that individually surround the wires 55.
[0046] In a fifth method step, the first side portion 5 and the second side portion 7 of the connector back cover 1 are secured to the connector housing 35 via the locking mechanism 47. Specifically, as shown in FIG. 6B , the protrusion 73 at the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 is inserted into the hole 67 at the side wall 41 of the first side portion 5 of the connector back cover 1, and the protrusion 75 at the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35 is inserted into the hole 71 at the side wall 41 of the second side portion 7 of the connector back cover 1. This locks the connector back cover 1 in the closed position and secures it to the rear portion 59 of the connector housing 35. [Explanation of symbols]
