When viewed in a direction perpendicular to the central axis D, the first ridge portion 18 may be linear. In a direction parallel to the central axis D, each of the seventh linear portion 21 and the second ridge portion 28 is located between the second minor cutting edge 27 and the first ridge portion 18.

[0043] Next, the cutting tool according to this embodiment will be described. Fig. 12 is a schematic front view showing the configuration of the cutting tool according to this embodiment. As shown in Fig. 12, the cutting tool 5 has a body 60 and a cutting insert 1. The cutting tool 5 is rotatable around a rotation axis E. From another perspective, the cutting tool 5 is for milling. The cutting insert 1 is attached to the body 60.

[0044] Specifically, the cutting tool 5 has a plurality of cutting inserts 1. The plurality of cutting inserts 1 are arranged at equal intervals around the rotation axis E of the cutting tool 5. The body 60 is provided with a plurality of insert arrangement grooves 63. One cutting insert 1 is arranged in one insert arrangement groove 63. The cutting insert 1 is attached to the body 60 by using a fastening screw 50. The fastening screw 50 is inserted into the through hole 2 of the cutting insert 1.

[0045] The insert placement groove 63 is formed by a groove side surface 62 and a groove bottom surface 61. The first flat surface portion 103 or the second flat surface portion 203 of the cutting insert 1 is pressed against the groove bottom surface 61. The outer circumferential surface 30 of the cutting insert 1 is pressed against the groove side surface 62. As described above, each of the multiple cutting inserts 1 is attached to the body 60.

[0046] Second embodiment Next, the configuration of the cutting insert 1 according to the second embodiment will be described. The cutting insert 1 according to the second embodiment differs from the cutting insert 1 according to the first embodiment mainly in that the first main cutting edge 51 is curved, and other configurations are substantially the same as those of the cutting insert 1 according to the first embodiment. Below, the configurations different from the cutting insert 1 according to the first embodiment will be mainly described.

[0047] Fig. 13 is a schematic perspective view showing the configuration of the cutting insert 1 according to the second embodiment. As shown in Fig. 13, the cutting insert 1 according to the second embodiment has a first main surface 100, a second main surface 200, an outer peripheral surface 30, a first ridge 10, and a second ridge 20. The first main surface 100 has a first flat surface portion 103, a first scooping surface portion 101, and a second scooping surface portion 102. The through hole 2 opens to the first flat surface portion 103.

[0048] Fig. 14 is a schematic front view showing the configuration of the cutting insert 1 according to the second embodiment. As shown in Fig. 14, the first ridge 10 has a first major cutting edge 51, a first minor cutting edge 17, a first ridge portion 18, and a first corner portion 19. The first major cutting edge 51 is continuous with the first flank portion 31. The first minor cutting edge 17 is continuous with the second flank portion 32. The first ridge portion 18 is continuous with the third outer peripheral region 33.

[0049] 14, the first main cutting edge 51 is curved when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the central axis D. When viewed in a direction perpendicular to the central axis D, the first main cutting edge 51 may be curved so as to be convex outward. In a direction parallel to the central axis D, at least a portion of the first main cutting edge 51 is located above the first corner portion 19. Note that the upward direction is the direction from the second main surface 200 toward the first main surface 100.

[0050] As shown in FIG. 14, the first minor cutting edge 17 is located between the first ridge portion 18 and the first major cutting edge 51 when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the central axis D. The first ridge portion 18 may be linear when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the central axis D. The first minor cutting edge 17 extends so as to intersect with the second linear portion 12 when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the central axis D. In a direction parallel to the central axis D, the portion of the first minor cutting edge 17 that is connected to the first major cutting edge 51 is located above the first corner portion 19. The portion of the first minor cutting edge 17 that is connected to the first ridge portion 18 is located below the first corner portion 19. The downward direction is a direction from the first main surface 100 toward the second main surface 200.

[0051] Fig. 15 is a schematic plan view showing the configuration of the cutting insert 1 according to the second embodiment. The first ridge line 10 has a first straight portion 11 and a second straight portion 12. As shown in Fig. 15, the first straight portion 11 and the second straight portion 12 are parallel to each other when viewed from the first flat portion 103 toward the second flat portion 203. The first straight portion 11 includes a first main cutting edge 51. When viewed from the first flat portion 103 toward the second flat portion 203, the first main cutting edge 51 is linear.

[0052] Next, the effects of the cutting insert 1 and the cutting tool 5 according to this embodiment will be described.

[0053] According to the cutting insert 1 of this embodiment, the virtual ridge shape 300 formed when the first ridge 10 and the second ridge 20 are vertically projected onto a virtual plane located at the midpoint between the first flat portion 103 and the second flat portion 203 is rotationally symmetrical by 180° about each of the first diagonal C1 and the second diagonal C2. Each of the first straight portion 11, the second straight portion 12, the third straight portion 23, and the fourth straight portion 24 includes a main cutting edge. This allows the four portions to be used as main cutting edges.

[0054] According to the cutting insert 1 of this embodiment, the outer peripheral surface 30 includes a first flank portion 31 that is continuous with the main cutting edge. The distance between the first flank portion 31 and the central axis D in a direction perpendicular to the central axis D of the through hole 2 becomes smaller from the first main surface 100 to the second main surface 200. This makes it possible to make the clearance angle of the first flank portion 31 that is continuous with the main cutting edge positive. As a result, it is possible to improve the sharpness of the cutting edge.

[0055] The cutting insert 1 according to this embodiment has a first main surface 100 and a second main surface 200. The second main surface 200 is opposite to the first main surface 100. The first main surface 100 includes a first flat surface portion 103. The second main surface 200 includes a second flat surface portion 203 parallel to the first flat surface portion 103. The cutting insert 1 has a through hole 2 extending from the first flat surface portion 103 to the second flat surface portion 203. As a result, when the cutting insert 1 is attached to the body 60, the first flat surface portion 103 or the second flat surface portion 203 is pressed against the groove bottom surface 61 of the insert placement groove 63 provided in the body 60. Therefore, the contact area between the cutting insert 1 and the body 60 can be increased. As a result, the cutting insert 1 can be firmly fixed to the body 60. The first main surface 100 also includes a first scooping surface portion 101. The second flat surface 203 is located opposite the first rake face 101. Therefore, when the main component of cutting resistance is applied to the first rake face 101, the stress can be dispersed by the second flat surface 203. As a result, the groove bottom surface 61 is less likely to be plastically deformed.

[0056] According to the cutting insert 1 of this embodiment, the first ridge 10 may include a minor cutting edge that is continuous with the major cutting edge. The minor cutting edge is involved in cutting in inclined machining or helical machining. The outer peripheral surface 30 may include a second flank portion 32 that is continuous with the minor cutting edge. The second flank portion 32 may have a shape that is recessed toward the central axis D. This allows the maximum inclination angle of the cutting tool 5 to be increased in inclined machining or helical machining.

[0057] According to the cutting insert 1 according to this embodiment, the first flank portion 31 may be flat. As a result, when the cutting insert 1 is attached to the body 60, the first flank portion 31 is pressed against the side surface of the insert placement groove 63 provided in the body 60. This makes it possible to increase the contact area between the cutting insert 1 and the body 60. As a result, the cutting insert 1 can be firmly fixed to the body 60.
