DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0020] 1-20 depict a stand 20 in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. The stand 20 generally includes a base assembly 22 and a coupling assembly 24. As depicted in the embodiment of FIGS. 2 and 3, the base assembly 22 generally includes a bearing cup 26 made of plastic or a non-ferrous metal. The bearing cup 26 defines an upwardly facing recess 27 having a smooth upwardly facing hemispherical surface 28 and an opposing lower surface 29. The base assembly 22 also includes an attractor bowl 30 made of steel or other ferrous metal, a fastener 32, a rubber washer 34, a metal bearing ring 36, a plastic base 38, and a rubber disk 40. It should be understood that the hemispherical surface 28 may be of other rounded shapes, such as a parabolic shape. The fastener 32 passes through openings in the bearing cup 26, attractor bowl 30, rubber washer 34, bearing ring 36, and plastic base 38 to fasten and hold the assembly together.

[0021] In the first embodiment as depicted in Figures 4 and 5, the coupling assembly 24 includes a cup interface 42 presenting a generally smooth hemispherical outer surface 44, a fixing magnet 46, an instrument interface magnets 48, 50, and an instrument interface adapter 52. It should be understood that the outer surface 44 may also be any other rounded shape, such as a parabolic shape, that matches the hemispherical surface 28 of the base assembly 22. The fixing magnet 46 is fixed in place by a retaining structure 54 extending from a lower surface 55 of the instrument interface adapter 52 and a retaining structure 56 extending from an inner surface 57 of the cup interface 42. The instrument interface magnets 48, 50 are supported on bosses 58, 60 extending from the cup interface 42 and are received within recesses 62, 64 formed in the instrument interface adapter 52. The cup interface 42 and the instrument interface adapter 52 may be molded from plastic or may be formed from any other suitable non-magnetic material. Magnets 46, 48 and 50 are preferably high strength neodymium magnets, but may be formed from any magnetic material that provides suitable magnetic strength.

[0022] 6 and 7, the coupling assembly 24 generally includes a cup interface 66 presenting a smooth hemispherical outer surface 68, a fastening magnet 70, and an instrument interface adapter 72. Again, the outer surface 68 may also be any other rounded shape, such as a parabolic shape, that matches the hemispherical surface 28 of the base assembly 22. The cup interface 66 may have a stop 74 that extends outwardly from a periphery 76 of the surface 68. Again, the magnet 70 is preferably a high strength neodymium magnet, but may be formed from any magnetic material that provides suitable magnetic strength.

[0023] The embodiment of Figures 4 and 5 is depicted as assembled and in use as shown in Figures 8 and 9. The base assembly 22 rests on a flat, generally level surface such as a table 79. The rubber disk 40 provides cushioning and inhibits the base assembly 22 from sliding across the surface 81 of the table 79. An electronic display 78, such as a tablet or smartphone, is received on the top surface 80 of the instrument interface adapter 52. The instrument interface magnets 48, 50 attract the electronic display 78 and hold it in engagement with the instrument interface adapter 52. Alternatively, the electronic display 78 can be adhered to the instrument interface adapter 52 with an adhesive, hook-and-loop material, or attached with mechanical fasteners or clamps. The cup interface 42 rests within the bearing cup 26 with the outer surface 44 in contact with the surface 28, forming a ball and socket type connection. The anchoring magnet 46 attracts the attractor bowl 30 to hold the base assembly 22 and the coupling assembly 24 in engagement. 9, the electronic display 78 can be positioned in roll, pitch and yaw by grasping the electronic display 78 or the cup interface 42 and sliding the cup interface 42 within the bearing cup 26 until the electronic display 78 reaches the desired position. The attractive forces between the anchoring magnet 46 and the attractor bowl 30 will cause the electronic display 78 to remain in that position until it is removed or adjusted to a new position. Although the attractor bowl 30 is depicted as a rounded, unitary structure that fits against the underside 29 of the bearing cup 26, it should be understood that the attractor bowl 30 could be formed into another shape, such as an inverted truncated pyramid, or could be formed from multiple separate pieces of ferrous metal, so long as the attractor bowl 30 is placed in close enough proximity to the anchoring magnet 46 to provide sufficient magnetic force to hold the electronic display 78 in place.

[0024] It should be appreciated that the electronic display 78 can be removed by simply lifting the electronic display 78 off the cup interface 42. The stand 20 according to the embodiment of Figures 4, 5, 8 and 9 can provide a tilt range β (pitch) of up to ±50 degrees, a rotation range α (roll) of up to ±25 degrees, and a rotation (yaw) θ of up to 360 degrees for a mounted electronic display device 78, as depicted in Figures 12-14.

An electronic display 78, such as a tablet or smartphone, is received on the top surface 82 of the device interface adapter 72 and secured in place with magnets, adhesives, hook-and-loop materials, mechanical fasteners, or clamps. The rubber disk 40 provides cushioning and inhibits the base assembly 22 from sliding on the surface 81 of the table 79. The cup interface 66 rests in the bearing cup 26 with the outer surface 69 in contact with the surface 28, forming a ball-and-socket type connection. The retaining magnet 70 attracts the attractor bowl 30 to hold the base assembly 22 and the linkage assembly 24 in engagement. As depicted in Figure 11, the electronic display 78 can be positioned in roll, pitch, and yaw by grasping the electronic display 78 or the cup interface 66 and sliding the cup interface 66 in the bearing cup 26 until the electronic display 78 reaches the desired position. The attractive force between the anchoring magnet 70 and the attractor bowl 30 will cause the electronic display 78 to remain in that position until it is removed or adjusted to a new location. Again, while the attractor bowl 30 is depicted as a rounded, unitary structure that fits flush against the underside 29 of the bearing cup 26, it should be understood that the attractor bowl 30 could be formed into another shape, such as an inverted truncated pyramid, or could be formed from multiple separate pieces of ferrous metal, so long as the attractor bowl 30 is placed in sufficient proximity to the anchoring magnet 70 to provide sufficient magnetic force to hold the electronic display 78 in place.

[0026] It should be understood that the electronic display 78 can be separated by simply removing the electronic display 78 from the device interface adapter 72. In the depicted embodiment, the stand 120 can provide a tilt range β (pitch) of up to ±25 degrees, a rotation range α of up to ±25 degrees, and rotation (yaw) θ of up to 360 degrees for the mounted electronic display device 78, as depicted in Figures 12-14.

[0027] In Figures 15-20, a stand 120 is depicted in accordance with an additional embodiment of the present invention. As depicted in the first embodiment in Figures 15, 16 and 17, the base assembly 122 generally includes an attractor bowl 126 made from steel or other ferrous metal and includes an attractor bowl 126 forming an upwardly facing recess 128 with a smooth upwardly facing hemispherical surface 130, a fastener 132, a washer 134, a shell 136, a base 138 and an O-ring 140. It should be understood that the hemispherical surface 130 may be any other rounded shape, such as a parabolic shape. The fastener 132 passes through openings in the attractor bowl 126, the washer 134 and the base 138 to fasten and hold the assembly together.

[0028] In the embodiment of Figures 15, 16 and 17, the coupling assembly 124 generally includes a cup interface 142 presenting a smooth hemispherical outer surface 144, a fixing magnet 146, an instrument interface magnets 148, 150, an instrument interface adapter 152, and a magnet holder 154. It should be understood that the outer surface 144 may also be any other rounded shape that matches the hemispherical surface 130 of the base assembly 122, such as a parabolic shape. The fixing magnet 146 is fixed in place in a central recess 156 of the cup interface 142 with an adhesive disk 158. The instrument interface magnets 148, 150 are received in recesses 160, 162 formed in the magnet holder 154. The cup interface 142 and the instrument interface adapter 152 may be molded from plastic or formed from any other suitable non-magnetic material. Magnets 146, 148 and 150 are preferably high strength neodymium magnets, but may be formed from any magnetic material with suitable magnetic strength.

[0029] In the second embodiment depicted in Figures 18, 19 and 20, the base assembly 122 generally includes an attractor bowl 126 made from steel or other ferrous metal and forming an upwardly facing recess 128 with a smooth upwardly facing hemispherical surface 130, a fastener 132, a washer 134, a shell 136, a base 138 and an O-ring 140. It should be understood that the hemispherical surface 130 may be any other rounded shape, such as a parabolic shape. The fastener 132 passes through openings in the attractor bowl 126, the washer 134 and the base 138 to fasten and hold the assembly together.

[0030] In the embodiment of Figures 18, 19 and 20, the coupling assembly 124 generally includes a cup interface 142 presenting a smooth hemispherical outer surface 144, a fixing magnet 146, instrument interface magnets 148, 150, an instrument interface adapter 152, and a magnet holder 154.

[0031] The embodiment of Figures 15-20 is depicted as assembled in Figures 15 and 18. The base assembly 122 rests on a flat, generally horizontal surface, such as a table or desk 79. An electronic display (not shown), such as a tablet or smartphone, is received on the top surface 180 of the instrument interface adapter 152. The instrument interface magnets 148, 150 attract and hold the electronic display in engagement with the instrument interface adapter 152. Alternatively, the electronic display may be adhered to the instrument interface adapter 152 with an adhesive, a hook-and-loop material, or attached with mechanical fasteners or clamps.
