[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims priority from U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 17 / 318,862, filed May 12, 2021, which is incorporated by reference herein.

[0002] FIELD OF THEINVENTION The present invention relates to the field of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and more particularly to an adjustable, portable, non-invasive CPR positioning device. [Background technology]

[0003] 2. Background of the Invention

[0003] Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death for men and women across most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. According to the American Heart Association, an adult who suddenly collapses and is unresponsive is likely experiencing sudden cardiac arrest and has almost zero chance of survival unless someone else takes immediate action. CPR is a mature technique that has been proven to increase the survival rate of patients who go into cardiac arrest.

[0004]

[0004] If a bystander witnesses a person experiencing cardiac arrest, they should call 9-1-1 and begin pushing hard and fast with minimal interruptions in the center of the victim's chest. The 2015 American Heart Association CPR guidelines recommend a compression rate of 100-120 times per minute at a depth of 2-2.4 inches in the center of the victim's chest, which allows full recoil of the chest and minimizes arrest. According to the American Heart Association Instructor Network's CPR Facts and Statistics (2014 data), nearly 45% of people who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital and are treated by bystander CPR survive.

[0005]

[0005] There are many reasons why bystander CPR may fail or be ineffective. When CPR is initiated by a bystander, it may be ineffective due to improper CPR technique, such as not providing sufficient compression depth, compression speed being too slow or too fast, inconsistent application of CPR over time, and failure to provide quality CPR during patient transport. Performing manual CPR on a cardiac arrest victim can be physically exhausting, requiring significant physical effort to maintain chest compressions in the correct position and at a sufficient depth and speed. Over time, fatigue can set in, compressions can become irregular and ineffective, and CPR failure can unfortunately result in the death or neurological damage of the cardiac arrest victim. To overcome this problem, many automatic and manual mechanical external chest compression devices for CPR have been developed.

[0006]

[0006] However, even before CPR is initiated, it may be delayed or even hindered because bystanders may not be able to properly position the patient supine on a hard surface, for example, due to the size or weight of the patient, the patient's location (e.g., trapped in a vehicle) or surrounding conditions, potential injury to the patient caused by movement, or the physical condition of the bystander. In addition, even if mechanical CPR equipment is available, CPR must be able to be performed quickly. According to the AHA recommendations and other studies, the recommended time for application of CPR is a maximum of 4 minutes from cardiac arrest.

[0007]

[0007] As stated by the requirements of CPR, the most important factor is how quickly a patient begins to receive quality CPR. This is when "time counts" and is clearly the determining factor between recovery and, at worst, serious injury that can result in loss of life. Therefore, any delay in the ability to begin administering quality CPR to a patient as quickly as possible can lead to tragic outcomes that could have been avoided.

[0008]

[0008] Some of the challenges of using portable CPR devices are that they are devices that contain multiple parts that are difficult to assemble or require specialized training, which wastes valuable time before CPR can begin.

[0009]

[0009] Several devices have been developed for positioning an external compression device against the patient's chest to perform repeated mechanical chest compressions. Each of the devices described refers to a support frame that may be pre-existing or connected to the compression device and that may be placed directly under the patient's back to facilitate chest compressions.

[0010]

[0010] For example, U.S. Patent No. 7,775,996 discloses a resuscitation system having a chest compression device that repeatedly compresses the patient's chest and subsequently expands the thorax. The chest compression device is mounted on a side plate on a substantially rectangular frame having two lateral legs including telescoping upper and lower parts hingedly connected between the side plate and a back plate.

[0011]

[0011] U.S. Patent No. 8,002,720 discloses a chest compression system support having a first embodiment similar to that shown in U.S. Patent No. 7,775,996, and a second embodiment in which two side legs are hingedly attached between upper and lower parts in addition to being hingedly connected between a side plate and a back plate.

[0012]

[0012] U.S. Patent No. 9,603,772 discloses a mechanical CPR device including a backboard, two towers removably attached to the backboard, and a beam releasably connected to each of the two towers, the components being configured together to operate in concert to move the beams toward and away from the backboard to perform chest compressions on a patient.

[0013]

[0013] U.S. Patent No. 10,022,295 discloses a chest compression apparatus having a support structure which holds a chest compressor, and lateral chest supports which, when the device is in use, are attached to the support structure at points on either side of the chest, thereby applying lateral pressure to either side of the chest in synchronization with compressions by the chest compressor.

[0014]

[0014] However, none of these devices are designed to be a lightweight, compact, folding unit that can be easily transported in a folded state to the scene of a patient's cardiac arrest, then intuitively deployed at the scene in a single-mode deployment motion, quickly donned to wrap around the torso of an incapacitated patient within minutes, and provide posterior support for chest compressions regardless of the patient's body position, whether on their side, supine, or even seated.

[0015]

[0015] Additionally, none of these positioning devices, once positioned around a patient's body, can be adjusted to fit snugly around the patient's body, whether large or small, and none of them can be adjusted in all directions to position the chest compression device in an optimal position relative to the patient's chest for maximum effectiveness and to provide symmetrical pressure (i.e., on the opposite side of the body from the side to which pressure is applied by the chest compression device).

[0016]

[0016] Thus, none of these prior art devices have a support frame that is built-in and can be assembled intuitively and unguidedly by an untrained operator without the need for instructions or explanations, and can be positioned against or around a patient in any position to facilitate immediate initiation of automated CPR chest compressions.

[0017]

[0017] There is an urgent need in the art to develop a positioning device which can be quickly and easily transported to a patient's location in a compact folded state, which can be quickly and easily unfolded and positioned around the body of an incapacitated patient in an intuitive and self-guided assembly manner without the need for any instructions or explanations and without the need to change the patient's body position, which can be adjusted to fit around the body of a large or small patient, which can be adjusted to position the chest compression device in an optimal position relative to the patient's chest for maximum effectiveness and to provide symmetrical pressure, and which can continue to operate hands-free to enable the operator to call for help or provide assistance to others in need. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0018] Summary of the Invention

[0018] Generally, an object of the present invention is to provide a CPR positioning device that is compactly foldable for easy storage and positioning, lightweight, self-supporting, and can be conveniently transported in a compactly folded state.

[0019] Another object of the present invention is to provide a CPR positioning device that can be quickly and easily deployed and positioned about the body of an incapacitated patient without the need to reposition the patient's body.

[0020] It is a further object of the present invention to provide a CPR positioning device that can be adjusted to fit around the body of a patient, whether large or small.

[0021]

[0021] Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a CPR positioning apparatus that can be adjusted in all directions to position a chest compression device in an optimal position relative to the patient's chest for maximum effectiveness using constant, independent and symmetrical pressure. [Means for solving the problem]

[0022]

[0022] These and other objects of the present invention are accomplished in some embodiments by an integrated CPR positioning device that is compactly foldable and can be rapidly deployed and threaded or wrapped around a patient's body so that even untrained personnel can begin administering CPR with minimal delay and distraction. In some embodiments, the device is designed to provide CPR to anyone in need anywhere as a first aid and emergency rescue without the need to reposition the patient's body, and once in place, continues to operate hands-free, allowing the operator to call for help or provide assistance to others in need, or to get out of danger.

[0023]

[0023] According to some embodiments, the present invention may be implemented by a CPR positioning device having an automatic chest compression device, also known as a power stroke delivery unit (PSDU), that delivers compression pressure and relief according to AHA guidelines, attached to an adjustable frame that allows for continued fine-tuning of compression delivery once the frame is adjusted and set in place around the patient's body. The electromechanically operated non-invasive automatic chest compression device, when positioned against the patient's chest, delivers CPR chest compressions to the patient by using a plate that delivers pressure and relief of pressure, alternately delivering chest compression pressure at the AHA recommended rate and depth. According to some embodiments, the positioning device provides the necessary symmetrical pressure (on the opposite side of the compression) regardless of the position or location of the patient's torso.

[0024]

[0024] According to some embodiments, the present invention is designed and constructed as a self-contained, comprehensive apparatus for administering CPR that is ready for immediate use with the automatic chest compression device already attached to the frame, and does not require assembly by the person preparing the resuscitation, thereby saving time and preventing confusion, errors, or the need for training.

[0025]

[0025] The apparatus has an automatic chest compression device mounted on a compactly folded rigid frame that can be adjusted by unfolding the frame in a predefined intuitive sequence. The only actions required are to lock the frame around the patient, adjust the linearly telescoping sides, and position the pressure plate of the automatic chest compression device close to the center of the patient's chest, including or excluding the patient's arms. There is no need to undress the patient or create resistance for chest compressions. Once the frame is adjusted, the position of the automatic chest compression device can be further adjusted to optimize CPR delivery to the patient's heart and lungs.

[0026]

[0026] Speed of setup and ease of use is achieved through the use of a rigid, adjustable, one-piece, lightweight, folding rectangular frame that is easily constructed, assembled, locked, and adjusted around the torso of an incapacitated patient in seconds to deliver CPR in the optimal position.

[0027]

[0027] In certain embodiments, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) positioning device includes a support structure including a plurality of elements, each having a variable length and hingedly connected to one another at their respective ends, the support structure being configured to be deployed from a compactly folded configuration in which the plurality of elements are disposed relative to one another to an operable configuration in which the elements are disposed end-to-end around a patient's chest, and a CPR chest compressor movably attached to a first of the plurality of elements, the CPR chest compressor being configured to be moved along the first of the plurality of elements when the support structure is in the operable configuration so that the chest compressor may be precisely positioned above the patient's chest.

[0031] In certain embodiments, the ends of each of the two adjacent elements of the first set are connected to one another by a hinge that allows the angle between the two adjacent elements of the first set to be varied from substantially 0° to substantially 360°. In some embodiments, the hinge has an angle of substantially 0° or substantially 360° when the support structure is in the compact folded configuration.

[0032] In some embodiments, the hinge has an angle locking mechanism configured to lock the angle between two adjacent elements of the first set when the support structure is in the operable configuration. In some embodiments, the angle locking mechanism is configured to lock the angle between two adjacent elements of the first set at about 90°.

[0033]

[0033] In certain embodiments, the connection between the ends of each of the two adjacent elements of the second set is separable, so that the two elements in the second set of two adjacent elements can be separated from each other to allow the support structure to be threaded around the patient's body. In some embodiments, the connection between the two elements of the second set of two adjacent elements is a hinge, the angle of which is variable. In some embodiments, the connection between the two elements of the second set of two adjacent elements is fixed at a predetermined angle, so that the angle between the two elements of the second set of two adjacent elements does not change. In some embodiments, the connection between the two elements of the second set of two adjacent elements is reconnectable when separated, so that the support structure can be placed end-to-end around the patient's chest when the support structure is threaded around the patient's body.

[0034]

[0034] In certain embodiments, a method of positioning a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) device includes passing a chain formed of multiple elements, each having a variable length and connected to each other at their respective ends, around a patient's body, setting the variable length of each of the multiple elements to a fixed length, connecting each end of a first and second of the multiple elements to each other such that the chain of the multiple elements is positioned end-to-end around the patient's chest as a support structure, setting a fixed angle between each connected pair of each of the multiple elements, and setting a position of a CPR chest compressor along one of the multiple elements so that it is precisely positioned above the patient's chest.

[0035] In some embodiments, the plurality of elements in the support structure includes four elements: a chest side element positioned against the patient's chest, a back side element positioned against the patient's back, and two side elements positioned against the patient's sides. In some embodiments, setting the position of the CPR chest compressor further includes locking the position of the chest compressor along a length of the chest side element to set the position of the CPR chest compressor.

[0036]

[0036] In certain embodiments, each of the multiple elements has two or more sub-parts that work together to vary the length of each of the multiple elements, and the step of setting the variable length of each of the respective multiple elements further includes locking the two or more sub-parts of each of the multiple elements relative to one another.

[0037]

[0037] In certain embodiments, the elements in the chain are connected to one another at their respective ends by hinges, and the step of setting the angle between each connected pair of each of the elements further comprises locking the hinged connections between each connected pair of each of the elements. In certain embodiments, setting the angle between each connected pair of each of the elements comprises locking the hinges at about 90°.

[0038]

[0038] In certain embodiments, the method further includes unfolding the chain formed of multiple elements from a compactly folded configuration in which the multiple elements are positioned relative to one another.

[0041] Detailed Description of the Invention

[0048] Referring now to the drawings, FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram illustrating a CPR positioning apparatus 1 according to one embodiment of the present invention. The apparatus support apparatus 1 includes an automatic chest compression device 3, also known as a power stroke delivery unit (PSDU), which when activated delivers automated, repetitive chest compression pressure to a patient in need. The automatic chest compression device 3 is mounted on an adjustable frame 5. As will be discussed in more detail below, the adjustable frame 5 can be transported in a folded state to the location of a patient in need of CPR, and the adjustable frame 5 can then be unfolded and positioned around the patient to administer CPR. The adjustable frame 5 is configured to be adjusted around the patient's body and to allow fine adjustment of the position of the automatic chest compression device 3 relative to the patient's chest when the adjustable frame 5 is adjusted and set in place around the patient's body.

[0042]

[0049] The adjustable frame 5 includes a number of connected sub-parts or elements that can be positioned around the patient's body with a chest compression device attached to one of the connected elements. In certain embodiments, the adjustable frame 5 includes the fewest number of connected sub-parts or elements that can be positioned around the patient's body, for example, three connected sub-parts or elements. In some other embodiments, the adjustable frame 5 includes as many connected sub-parts or elements that can be positioned to allow the adjustable frame 5 to fit snugly around the patient's body, for example, five, ten or even more connected sub-parts or elements. In some other embodiments, the adjustable frame 5 includes only as many connected sub-parts or elements that can be positioned to form a rectangular frame around the patient's body, for example, four connected sub-parts or elements. In some embodiments, the multiple connected sub-parts or elements include a chest side element 7, a back or bottom element 9, a first side element 11, and a second side element 13. A chest compression device 3, i.e., a PSDU, can be attached to the chest side element 7 as described later in this specification. To enable the frame 5 to be positioned around the patient's body regardless of whether the patient's body is large or small, the first side element 11 and the second side element 13 can be connected to both the chest side element 7 and the back side element 9, as described below, and can be adapted to provide an adjustable distance between the chest side element 7 and the back side element 9.

[0043]

[0050] In a particular embodiment, the chest side element 7 is configured to be placed against the chest side of the patient so that the chest compression device 3 can provide the necessary chest compressions supported by the back side element 9, and the back side element 9 is configured to be placed against the back of the patient in any position of the patient to provide contrasting pressure for chest compressions. For example, when the patient is lying supine, i.e. on his back, the back side element 9 is intended to be placed under the patient's back so that the upper region of the patient's back rests on the back side element 9, and the chest side element 7 is placed against the front of the patient with the automatic chest compression device 3 directly against the chest. When the patient is lying prone, i.e. on his stomach, the chest side element 7 is intended to be placed under the patient's chest so that the patient's chest rests on the chest side element 7. In this position, the chest side element 7 abuts against the patient's chest so that the chest compression device 3 can provide the necessary chest compressions against the patient's back. When the patient is lying on his / her side or in a sitting position, the back element 9 is intended to be placed against the patient's back. In this position, the chest element 7 abuts against the front of the patient, so that the chest compression device 3 is supported by the back element 9 and can provide the necessary chest compressions.

[0044]

[0051] In certain embodiments, one or more or each of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11 and second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 have multiple sub-pieces that are adjustable together such that each element can have a variable, adjustable length. With this arrangement, the length of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11 and second side element 13 can be easily tailored to fit around the chest region of a patient.

[0045]

[0052] In one such embodiment, the chest side element 7 of the adjustable frame 5 has two or more sub-parts that are adjustable together so that the chest side element 7 can have a variable length. In one embodiment, as shown in FIG. 1, the chest side element 7 includes a first sub-part 7a and a second sub-part 7b that are assembled and telescopically arranged as rails to slide alongside each other or coaxially to telescope one inside the other so that the length of the chest side element 7 can be easily changed in the longitudinal direction of the arrow A. For example, to lengthen the chest side element 7, the sub-parts 7a, 7b of the chest side element can be pulled apart so that one of them slides out from the other. Additionally, to shorten the chest side element 7, the sub-parts 7a, 7b can be pushed together so that one of them slides into the other. In another embodiment (not shown), the chest side element 7 may include, in addition to the first sub-part 7a and the second sub-part 7b, additional sub-parts arranged to telescope one inside the other so as to allow the length of the chest side element 7 to be adjusted in the longitudinal direction of arrow A.

[0046]

[0053] In a preferred embodiment, the adjustment mechanism that enables two or more sub-parts of the chest-side element 7 of the adjustable frame 5, such as the first sub-part 7a and the second sub-part 7b, to have variable lengths also has a locking mechanism configured to lock each of the two or more sub-parts of the chest-side element 7 in a respective position along the length of the chest-side element 7 relative to the other sub-parts. This locking mechanism can be a lateral locking pin 15 as shown in Figure 1 or any other such locking mechanism as known in the art, such as a fastening device or notch position.

[0047]

[0054] The automatic chest compression device 3 is attached to the chest side element 7. The automatic chest compression device 3 may include chest compression members as known in the art, including, for example, a piston, a transmission mechanism for transmitting energy to the piston, a motor, and a power source (not shown). In certain embodiments, the automatic chest compression device 3 is adjustably attached to the chest side element 7 such that the automatic chest compression device 3 can move in either direction along the length of the chest side element 7, thereby allowing the automatic chest compression device 3 to be optimally positioned relative to the patient's chest to deliver chest compressions to the patient. The adjustable mechanism that allows the automatic chest compression device 3 to move in either direction along the length of the chest side element 7 may be as known in the art, such as slidable along a rail. In a preferred embodiment, the adjustable mechanism that allows the automatic chest compression device 3 to move in either direction along the length of the chest side element 7 also has a locking mechanism configured to lock the automatic chest compression device 3 in its position along the length of the chest side element 7, which may be any known in the art, such as a lateral locking pin, a clamping device or a notch.

[0048]

[0055] In another such embodiment, the back element 9 of the adjustable frame 5 has two or more sub-parts that are adjustable together so that the back element 9 can have a variable length. In one embodiment, as shown in FIG. 1, the back element 9 includes a first sub-part 9a and a second sub-part 9b arranged to nest one inside the other so that the length of the back element 9 can be easily changed in the longitudinal direction of the arrow B. For example, to lengthen the back element 9, the sub-parts 9a, 9b of the back element can be pulled apart so that one of them slides out from the other. In addition, to shorten the back element 9, the sub-parts 9a, 9b can be pushed together so that one of them slides into the other. In another embodiment (not shown), the back element 9 can include additional sub-parts arranged to nest one inside the other in addition to the first sub-part 9a and the second sub-part 9b so that the length of the back element 9 can be adjusted in the longitudinal direction of the arrow B.

[0049]

[0056] In a preferred embodiment, the adjustment mechanism that enables two or more sub-parts of the back element 9 of the adjustable frame 5, such as the first sub-part 9a and the second sub-part 9b, to have variable lengths also has a locking mechanism configured to lock each of the two or more sub-parts of the back element 9 in a respective position along the length of the back element 9 relative to the other sub-parts. This locking mechanism can be a lateral locking pin 15 as shown in FIG. 1 or a clamping device, or any other such locking mechanism as known in the art.

[0050]

[0057] In one embodiment, the back element 9 includes an optional body support surface 9c, at least on the surface facing the inside of the closed adjustable frame 5. The body support surface 9c can be formed from any material as known in the art, such as foam or padding, to provide a contrasting pressure to counter the pressure provided by the chest compression device 3 while providing comfort to the patient. The body support surface 9c can be attached to one or more of the sub-parts of the back element 9, such as sub-parts 9a, 9b. In some embodiments, the body support surface 9c has a locking mechanism configured to lock the body support surface 9c in position relative to the back element 9 or along the length of the back element 9, which can be a lateral locking pin, a fastening device, or a notch, as known in the art.

[0051]

[0058] In further such embodiments, the first side element 11 of the adjustable frame 5 has two or more sub-parts that are adjustable together so that the first side element 11 can have a variable length. In one embodiment, as shown in FIG. 1, the first side element 11 includes a first sub-part 11a and a second sub-part 11b arranged to telescope one inside the other so that the length of the first side element 11 can be easily changed in the longitudinal direction of the arrow C. For example, to lengthen the first side element 11, the sub-parts 11a, 11b of the first side element can be pulled apart so that one of them slides out from the other. Additionally, to shorten the first side element 11, the sub-parts 11a, 11b can be pushed together so that one of them slides into the other. In another embodiment (not shown), the first side element 11 may include, in addition to the first sub-part 11a and the second sub-part 11b, additional sub-parts arranged to telescope one inside the other so as to enable the length of the first side element 11 to be adjusted in the longitudinal direction of arrow C.

[0052]

[0059] In a preferred embodiment, the adjustment mechanism that enables two or more sub-parts of the first side element 11 of the adjustable frame 5, such as the first sub-part 11a and the second sub-part 11b, to have variable lengths also includes a locking mechanism configured to lock each of the two or more sub-parts of the first side element 11 in a respective position along the length of the first side element 11 relative to the other sub-parts. The locking mechanism may be a lateral locking pin 15 as shown in FIG. 1 or a clamping device, or any other such locking mechanism as known in the art.

[0053]

[0060] The first side element 11 may include a body support surface 11c on at least the surface facing the inside of the closed adjustable frame 5. The body support surface 11c may be formed from any material as known in the art, such as foam or padding, to provide comfort to the patient when the adjustable frame 5 is placed around the patient's body. The body support surface 11c may be attached to one or more of the sub-parts of the first side element, such as sub-parts 11a, 11b. In some embodiments, the body support surface 11c has a locking mechanism configured to lock the body support surface 11c in position relative to the first side element 11 or along the length of the first side element 11, which may be a lateral locking pin, a fastening device, or a notch, as known in the art.

[0054]

[0061] In further such embodiments, the second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 has two or more sub-parts that are adjustable together so that the second side element 13 can have a variable length. In one embodiment, as shown in FIG. 1, the second side element 13 includes a first sub-part 13a and a second sub-part 13b arranged to telescope one inside the other so that the length of the second side element 13 can be easily changed in the longitudinal direction of the arrow D. For example, to lengthen the second side element 13, the sub-parts 13a, 13b of the second side element can be pulled apart so that one of them slides out from the other. Additionally, to shorten the second side element 13, the sub-parts 13a, 13b can be pushed together so that one of them slides into the other. In another embodiment (not shown), the second side element 13 may include, in addition to the first sub-part 13a and the second sub-part 13b, additional sub-parts arranged to telescope one inside the other so as to enable the length of the second side element 13 to be adjusted in the longitudinal direction of arrow D.

[0055]

[0062] In a preferred embodiment, the adjustment mechanism that enables two or more sub-parts of the second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5, such as the first sub-part 13a and the second sub-part 13b, to have variable lengths also has a locking mechanism configured to lock each of the two or more sub-parts of the second side element 13 in a respective position along the length of the second side element 13 relative to the other sub-parts. The locking mechanism may be a lateral locking pin 15 as shown in FIG. 1 or a clamping device, or any other such locking mechanism as known in the art.

[0056]

[0063] The second side element 13 may include a body support surface 13c at least on the surface facing the inside of the closed adjustable frame 5. The body support surface 13c may be formed from any material as known in the art, such as foam or padding, to provide comfort to the patient when the adjustable frame 5 is positioned around the patient's body. The body support surface 13c may be attached to one or more of the sub-parts of the second side element, such as sub-parts 13a, 13b. In some embodiments, the body support surface 13c has a locking mechanism configured to lock the body support surface 13c in position relative to the second side element 13 or along the length of the second side element 13, which may be a lateral locking pin, a fastening device, or a notch, as known in the art.

[0057]

[0064] As shown in Figure 1, one or more of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11, and second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 may be linear or substantially linear. In certain embodiments, all of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11, and second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 are linear or substantially linear. In these embodiments, due to respective sub-components of each of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11, and second side element 13, each element may have variation in length along the linear or substantially linear length of the respective element, as shown in Figure 1.

[0058]

[0065] However, in some other embodiments, one or more of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11, and second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 may not be linear, for example, having a curved or arcuate configuration. In certain embodiments, all of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11, and second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 may not be linear, for example, having a curved or arcuate configuration. In these embodiments, each of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11, and second side element 13 sub-parts may have a variation in length along the curved or arcuate length of each of the elements, as shown in FIG. 1.

[0059]

[0066] 1, the respective ends of the first side element 11 and the second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 are connected to the respective ends of the chest element 7 and the back element 9. In certain embodiments, the connections between the ends of the first side element 11 and the respective ends of the chest element 7 and the back element 9 are rotatable, and the connections between the ends of the second side element 13 and the respective ends of the chest element 7 and the back element 9 are rotatable.

[0060]

[0067] 1, a tip end of the sub-part 11a of the first side element 11 is rotatably connected to a tip end of the sub-part 7a of the chest side element 7, and a tip end of the sub-part 11b of the first side element 11 is rotatably connected to a tip end of the sub-part 9a of the back side element 9. Similarly, a tip end of the sub-part 13a of the second side element 13 is rotatably connected to a tip end of the sub-part 7b of the chest side element 7, and a tip end of the sub-part 13b of the second side element 13 is rotatably connected to a tip end of the sub-part 9b of the back side element 9.

[0061]

[0068] In certain embodiments, the rotatable connections of the adjustable frame 5 use hinges 17. As used herein, the term "hinge" refers to any element that allows for at least a rotational connection between two parts. The hinges 17 can also be flexure hinges to allow for a slidable connection or some linear displacement of the connected elements, in addition to the rotational connection between the connected elements, as may be required when the adjustable frame 5 is folded / unfolded, as described later in this specification.

[0062]

[0069] In certain embodiments, at least one of the hinges 17 also has a locking mechanism (not shown) configured to lock the hinge 17 in its respective position once each part / sub-part of the adjustable frame 5 is set relative to the other parts / sub-parts. In certain embodiments, each of the hinges 17 has such a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism may be a lateral locking pin, a clamping device, a notch, or any other such locking mechanism as known in the art.

[0063]

[0070] In some embodiments, the locking mechanism of the hinges 17 can lock each of the elements joined by the hinges 17 at any selected angle when the elements of the adjustable frame 5 are placed around the patient's body. Thus, in an embodiment where the adjustable frame 5 has four elements, such as the chest element 7, the back element 9, the first side element 11, and the second side element 13, which are all linear or substantially linear, the adjustable frame 5 will have a rectangular or square configuration when the locking mechanism of the hinges 17 locks each of the elements joined by the hinges at an angle of about 90°. In other embodiments, the locking mechanism of the hinges 17 can lock each of the elements joined by the hinges at various angles when the adjustable frame 5 is placed around the patient's body. In some other embodiments, the various angles of the hinges 17 can be any angle that adds up to 360° when the adjustable frame 5 is placed around the patient's body.

[0064]

[0071] In certain embodiments, at least one of the hinges 17, for example hinge 17a, is not rotatable at all (and thus in such embodiments should be referred to as joint 17a rather than hinge 17a), but instead each element / sub-component of the adjustable frame 5 that is to be connected by hinge / joint 17a is configured to be positioned at a predetermined angle when so connected by hinge / joint 17a. In certain embodiments, each of the other hinges 17 can have a locking mechanism, such as a lateral locking pin, a fastening device, a notch, or any other such locking mechanism as known in the art, that allows each other element joined by hinge 17 to be at any selected angle when the elements of the adjustable frame 5 are positioned about the patient's body. In this embodiment, when the elements / sub-parts of the adjustable frame in the open position are placed around the patient's body, the separate elements / sub-parts of the adjustable frame 5 are connected by hinges / joints 17a and set to a pre-defined angle at the hinges / joints 17a, and then the other elements of the adjustable frame 5 are set to any selected respective angle by locking the hinges 17a.

[0065]

[0072] Although FIG. 1 shows the distal end of sub-piece 11a of first side element 11 connected to the distal end of sub-piece 7a of chest side element 7 by hinge / joint 17a, and all other elements of adjustable frame 5 connected by hinges 17, in alternative embodiments any other two of the elements of adjustable frame 5 can be connected by hinges / joints 17a and the rest by hinges 17.

[0066]

[0073] The CPR positioning device 1 can be modified from its operable configuration of Figure 1 to be more compact, for example for transport, by folding it into a flattened configuration, as shown in Figure 2. In one such configuration, the hinge 17 allows each of the elements joined thereby to rotate from an angle of substantially 0° to an angle of substantially 360°.

[0067]

[0074] In one embodiment of the flattened configuration, two of the hinges 17 in the adjustable frame 5 are fully bent such that the respective elements connected by them are tangent to one another, i.e., at a substantially 0° angle, while the other two hinges 17 in the adjustable frame 5 are not fully bent such that the respective elements connected by them are axially aligned with one another and disposed in a straight line, i.e., at a substantially 360° angle. For example, the hinge 17 between the chest element 7 and the first side element 11 is fully bent, the hinge 17 between the back element 9 and the second side element 13 is fully bent, but the hinge 17 between the chest element 7 and the second side element 13 is not fully bent such that the elements are disposed in a straight line, and the hinge 17 between the first side element 11 and the back element 9 is not fully bent such that the elements are disposed in a straight line. In another example, the first two hinges mentioned above can be fully non-flexible, and the second two hinges mentioned above can be fully flexible.

[0068]

[0075] In embodiments where the hinges 17 are standard hinges, the adjustable frame 5 in this flattened form resembles a very narrow parallelogram because the hinges 17 can only reach very small angles without the respective elements being able to physically position themselves relative to one another. However, in certain embodiments, each of the hinges 17 may be a flexure hinge, i.e., a hinge that allows some slidable movement or linear displacement of the elements connected by the hinge 17, as is known in the art, to allow the elements 7, 9, 11, and 13 of the adjustable frame 5 to fold flat relative to one another, i.e., at either 0° or 360° angles, rather than at very small angles relative to one another. This allows the elements 7, 9, 11, and 13 of the adjustable frame 5 to fold flat, i.e., parallel, relative to one another when the hinges 17 are fully bent. Thus, in embodiments in which hinge 17 is a flexure hinge, the adjustable frame 5 in this flattened form resembles a straight line, with the chest side element 7 and second side element 13 aligned in a straight line and flat against the first side element 11 and back element 9 aligned in a straight line, or the chest side element 7 and first side element 11 aligned in a straight line and flat against the back element 9 and second side element 13 aligned in a straight line.

[0069]

[0076] In another embodiment of the flattened configuration, all of the hinges 17 in the adjustable frame 5 are fully bent, such that all of the respective elements connected by the hinges 17 are at an angle relative to one another, i.e., either 0° or 360°, and the respective elements are not axially aligned in a straight line with one another. However, in this embodiment, to allow the adjustable frame 5 to be further folded into this compact configuration, at least one of the hinges 17, and in certain embodiments only one of the hinges 17, is separable, allowing the two elements that are rotationally connected to one another to be fully disconnected. When the separable one of the hinges 17 is disconnected, the chest element 7, the back element 9, the first side element 11, and the second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 can be folded onto one another for a compact movement, as shown in FIG. 2.

[0070]

[0077] For example, as shown in FIG. 1, the hinge / joint 17a connecting the first side element 11 to the chest-side element 7 may be separable such that the first side element 11 can be completely detached from the chest-side element 7. In an embodiment in which the first side element 11 to the chest-side element 7 each have extensible sub-parts, the hinge / joint 17a connecting the tip of the sub-part 11a of the first side element 11 to the tip of the sub-part 7a of the chest-side element 7 may be separable such that the tip of the sub-part 11a of the first side element 11 can be completely detached from the tip of the sub-part 7a of the chest-side element 7. Instead, the description herein will treat the hinge / joint 17a as separably connecting the tip of the sub-part 11a of the first side element 11 to the tip of the sub-part 7a of the chest-side element 7, although any of the other hinges 17 may be configured to be separable in a similar manner.

[0071]

[0078] Figure 2 is a schematic diagram of the CPR positioning device 1 in a compact folded configuration, showing the packaging / storage arrangement. Figure 2 shows one of many folding options.

[0072]

[0079] When in its compact folded form as shown in FIG. 2, the CPR positioning device 1 can be conveniently stored and transported so as to occupy a minimum of space. When needed, the folded CPR positioning device 1 can be quickly removed from its storage location and easily transported to the scene of an injured patient in need of CPR. The folded CPR positioning device 1 can then be easily assembled around an incapacitated patient, regardless of the patient's position. The actual assembly, adjustment and management can be done intuitively by untrained persons quickly and without any specialized equipment, so that CPR can be immediately started.

[0073]

[0080] The CPR positioning device 1 can be easily transformed from the flattened configuration shown in Fig. 2 to the operable configuration shown in Fig. 1. In a particular embodiment, to transform the CPR positioning device 1 from its compactly folded configuration shown in Fig. 2 to the operable configuration as shown in Fig. 1, the elements 7, 9, 11 and 13 of the adjustable frame 5 are first unfolded from their compactly folded configuration shown in Fig. 2 to a fully open configuration as shown in Fig. 3. To do so, the hinges 17 between the connected elements 7, 9, 11, 13 of the adjustable frame 5 need to be unbent. In a particular embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 show the steps of transforming the adjustable frame 5 from the folded configuration shown in Fig. 2 to the operable configuration shown in Fig. 1.

[0074]

[0081] In certain embodiments, all of the elements 7, 9, 11, and 13 of the adjustable frame 5 are deployed to be linearly disposed. In some other embodiments, only the first side element 11, the back element 9, and the second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 need to be deployed to be linearly disposed, and the chest element 7 can still be folded relative to the second side element 13, as shown in FIG. 3. In some other embodiments, only the first side element 11 and the back element 9 of the adjustable frame 5 need to be deployed to be linearly disposed, and the second side element 13 and the chest element 7 can still be folded relative to the second side element 13 or relative to each other.

[0075]

[0082] Regardless of whether the elements 7, 9, 11, and 13 of the adjustable frame 5 are deployed to be linearly positioned using the hinges 17, the deployed adjustable frame 5 is ready to be slid under or positioned across the back of a supine patient, as shown in FIG. 3, and then the back element 9 of the adjustable frame 5 must be positioned against the back of the patient. For example, with a patient in a supine position, i.e. lying on their back, the first side element 11 and the back element 9 of the adjustable frame 5 should pass under the patient's back, and the first side element 11 should be pulled over the patient's back so that the back element 9 of the adjustable frame 5 is positioned under the patient's back. In certain embodiments, the hinges 17 between the elements 7, 9, 11, and 13 can be bent at an angle greater than 180°. This is useful when the first side element 11 and the back element 9 of the adjustable frame 5 are passed under the patient's back to accommodate situations where the supine patient is not lying on a flat surface.

[0076]

[0083] As shown in Fig. 4, when a patient is laid directly on the back element 9 of the adjustable frame 5, e.g., on the body support surface 9c, the first side element 11, the second side element 13, and the chest element 7 of the adjustable frame 5 can be folded around the patient's body. In certain embodiments, the chest element 7 can then be locked to the first side element 11 using at least one lockable hinge / joint, such as hinge / joint 17a, which may have a locking mechanism or be configured such that the connected elements are set at a predetermined angle, both as described hereinabove. Further locking some or all of the hinges 17 at a predetermined angle provides rigidity to the adjustable frame 5 in its operable configuration, allowing for consistent compression treatment regardless of the support or patient position.

[0077]

[0084] A variety of hinged locking mechanisms can be used, with the choice of which mechanism being determined by the model of adjustable frame 5. In one basic version, the locking mechanism is locked by manually rolling a locking tab into place. In more advanced models, for further simplification, the hinge can be automatically locked by a pressure ball or spring loaded pin that goes into a pre-designed hole. Some examples of known locking mechanisms that may be suitable include ball catch latches, jam pocket latch bolt assembly release devices, cabinet ball door catches, pressure release slide latch mechanisms, spring loaded slide bolt latches, locking pull pin latches, quick release ball lock pins, adjustable locking hinges, self-adjusting compression latch springs, welded spring latches, and leaf spring assisted opener spring latches (such as switch blade knife locking mechanisms).

[0078]

[0085] In certain embodiments, the length of each of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11, and second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 can be adjusted as described above in this specification either before or after the adjustable frame 5 is closed and locked around the patient's body so that the adjustable frame 5 fits snugly around the patient's body.

[0079]

[0086] Specifically, the length of each of the chest element 7, the back element 9, the first side element 11, and the second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 is adjusted so that when the adjustable frame 5 is folded around the patient's body, its height and width fit snugly around the patient's body. These adjustments are made based on the size and shape of the patient's body. In certain embodiments, the first side element 11 and the second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 are adjusted so that the support surfaces 11c, 13c contact the respective sides of the patient's body. For example, once the adjustable frame 5 is placed around the patient's body, the width and height adjustments can be easily made and the length of each of the elements 7, 9, 11, and 13 of the adjustable frame 5 can be locked in place while ensuring that each respective element contacts the patient's body.

[0080]

[0087] FIG. 5A shows the CPR positioning device 1 in an operational configuration, with the adjustable frame 5 folded around the patient's body. FIG. 5B shows the CPR positioning device 1 in an operational configuration, with the adjustable frame 5 folded around the patient's body in a supine position. In this embodiment, the hinges / joints 17a are reconnected / locked together and folded to a planned 90° angle or set to a predetermined 90° angle, and the hinges 17 are folded to a 90° angle. In certain embodiments, the hinges / joints 17a and the hinges 17 may be locked / connected to an angle of about 90°. In certain embodiments, the hinges / joints 17a and the hinges 17 may be locked to an angle of about 90°. In certain embodiments, the hinges 17 may be configured to be locked to an angle of 90°±10-20°. In certain embodiments, the hinges 17 may be configured to prevent angles greater than 90°. In other embodiments, each of the hinges 17 may be folded and locked as needed to whatever angle allows the adjustable frame 5 to best fit around the patient's body. In certain embodiments, the hinges 17 may be locked in place with each respective element in contact with the patient's body.

[0081]

[0088] In further embodiments, to achieve precise positioning of the compression plates of the chest compression device 3 relative to the patient's chest on or near the patient's heart, the chest compression device 3 can be adjusted along the length of the chest side element 7 in the longitudinal direction of arrow A as described herein above. In certain embodiments, the chest compression device 3 can be locked in place, for example with a locking mechanism 15, so that the adjustable frame 5 is stable to withstand compression forces.

[0082]

[0089] In a particular embodiment, each of the chest element 7, back element 9, first side element 11 and second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 contacts the patient's body directly or through the respective support surfaces 9c, 11c and 13c. Thus, when the chest compression device 3 is delivering compressions to the patient's chest, the patient's body is locked within the closed structure of the CPR positioning apparatus 1 in a manner that does not allow any relative movement of the frame 5 itself, while at the same time allowing the CPR positioning apparatus 1 to provide a compression / relaxation sequence against the back support surface 9c, which is fixed in place by the locked and adjusted sides and the rigidity of the locked hinge 17.

[0083]

[0090] Figures 6 and 7 show how different sized patient bodies fit snugly within the closed frame 5 of the CPR positioning device 1. Specifically, Figure 6 shows the CPR positioning device 1 in an operational configuration in which the adjustable frame 5 folds around a smaller patient's body, and Figure 7 shows the CPR positioning device 1 in an operational configuration in which the adjustable frame 5 folds around a larger patient's body.

[0084]

[0091] In some positions, in situations where the patient needs to be evacuated or transported to another location, the CPR positioning device 1 may also include fixation straps and a head restraint (not shown), enabling operation of the CPR positioning device to provide CPR even in situations where external conditions would normally prevent the application of CPR by other means.

[0085]

[0092] It should be noted that the CPR positioning device 1 can be placed around the patient's body regardless of the patient's position, whether lying on their back (i.e., supine) on a hard surface as described above, lying on their stomach (i.e., prone), lying on their side or sitting, or sitting and trapped, for example, in a car. The CPR positioning device 1 can be constructed and locked around the body with one or both arms inside or outside the frame, after which chest compressions according to the AHA guidelines can be applied.

[0086]

[0093] Additionally, in certain embodiments, optional straps and head restraints are provided to allow the patient to be moved and transported while still receiving quality CPR until medical assistance can take over. In upright positions and unstable situations, such as when the patient is being evacuated to another location, safety straps can be used to prevent the adjustable frame 5 from moving relative to the patient's body, for example by attaching one or more straps from the chest element 7 over the patient's shoulders to the back element 9 or around the chest, from the first side element 11 to the second side element 13, or in any other manner.

[0087]

[0094] To transform the CPR positioning device 1 from the operable configuration shown in Fig. 1 to the folded configuration shown in Fig. 2, the separable hinge / joint 17a should be disconnected such that the distal end of the sub-part 11a of the first side element 11 is separated from the distal end of the sub-part 7a of the chest element 7 (or any two sub-parts of the frame 5 connected by the hinge / joint 17a are separated from each other), and then the elements 7, 9, 11 and 13 of the adjustable frame 5 are folded onto each other. In a particular embodiment, each of the chest element 7, the back element 9, the first side element 11 and the second side element 13 of the adjustable frame 5 are shortened as much as possible either before or after the hinge / joint 17a is disconnected and before or after the hinge 17 is folded.

[0088]

[0095] Thus, a CPR positioning device has been provided. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the present invention may be practiced other than by the described embodiments, which are presented for purposes of illustration and not limitation, and that the present invention is limited only by the scope of the following claims. Moreover, since numerous modifications and variations will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and therefore, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be used without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
