Description

[Technical field]

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 840,109, filed April 29, 2019, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.

[0002] The present invention relates to the composition and use of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor compounds to prevent the premature polymerization of monomers. [Background technology]

[0003] For example, high temperature processing of hydrocarbon streams rich in ethylenically unsaturated monomers such as styrene, isoprene, butadiene can be very difficult. In various chemical industrial processes, the use of high temperatures to purify the monomers can lead to undesirable and problematic polymers. These vinyl monomers polymerize undesirably by radical polymerization, especially at high temperatures. Similarly, transportation and storage of hydrocarbon streams containing vinyl species can result in premature polymerization unless polymerization inhibitors are added to the streams. The polymers thus formed can precipitate out of solution and foul process equipment. Removal of the contaminants becomes necessary. Physical removal or cleaning of contaminated equipment is often costly. These undesirable polymerization reactions also result in lost production efficiency and consumption of valuable products. Undesirable polymerization reactions are particularly problematic in compositions containing vinyl aromatic monomers.

[0004] To prevent undesired polymerization reactions, free radical polymerization inhibitors as polymerization inhibitors are often added to process streams or stored compositions. However, these compounds are generally consumed very quickly. For example, if an emergency occurs due to mechanical or processing problems and an inhibitor cannot be added, the previously added inhibitor is quickly consumed. Undesired polymerization reactions then rapidly reoccur.

[0005] Examples of polymerization inhibitors known in the art include dialkylhydroxylamines, such as hydroxypropylhydroxylamine (HPHA), and stable nitroxide free radicals. Other inhibitors include N,N'-dialkylphenylenediamines, N,N'-diarylphenylenediamines, and N-aryl-N'-alkylphenylenediamines. Quinone diimide compounds are another class of inhibitors. However, nitroxide-containing compounds do not react with NO x may release harmful substances, making their use undesirable in some circumstances.

[0006] Other types of polymerization inhibitor compounds, often called "retarders," slow the rate of polymerization reactions. However, they are often not as effective as polymerization inhibitors, especially the stable nitroxide free radicals. However, polymerization retarders are usually not consumed as quickly as polymerization inhibitors, so they tend to be more useful in emergency shutdown situations.

[0007] Retarders such as sulfur and dinitrophenol (DNP) compounds, such as 2,6-dinitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrocresol, and 2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol (DNBP), were first used. However, DNP and sulfur retarders have been shown to reduce NO X and S.O. X DNP-based polymerization inhibitors emit high levels of effluent, making their use problematic. Furthermore, DNP-based retarders are highly toxic, so the safety of personnel handling DNP-based polymerization inhibitors is a major concern.

[0008] One class of compounds designed to act as a safer alternative to DNP retarders is based on quinone methide chemistry. Quinone methides slow the rate of polymer formation under static conditions and do not need to be re-fed frequently to the process stream. However, some quinone methide compounds do not exhibit good stability. Examples of quinone methide compounds can be found in U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,003,800, 5,583,247, and 7,045,647. Styrene production typically involves the use of both inhibitors (e.g., nitroxide-containing inhibitors such as TEMPO) and retarders (e.g., quinone methides). In various styrene production situations, it is desirable to eliminate nitroxide-containing inhibitors, but it has been found that the use of retarders alone provides insufficient polymerization inhibition, making it difficult to eliminate or minimize the use of inhibitors. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0009] Technical challenges remain in the art related to the effectiveness of compounds used to inhibit or slow polymerization reactions, as well as stability and safety concerns. Despite concerns about toxicity, DNP-based polymerization inhibitors remain the most efficient retarders available. Due to safety concerns, there is a need for polymerization inhibitors that are at least as effective as DNP-type retarders, but that are not toxic. [Means for solving the problem]

[0010] The present disclosure relates to nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds, such as aminophenol compounds, including tertiary amine chemistry, and compositions and methods that include or utilize aminophenol compounds as polymerization inhibitors to inhibit the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, such as styrene and butadiene, in a variety of processes and situations, such as the purification, fractionation, separation, compression, transportation, and storage of various monomer-containing compositions.

[0011] The use of the polymerization inhibitor composition of the present invention reduces contamination of process, transport, and storage facilities while avoiding the drawbacks of using certain polymerization inhibitors that release undesirable effluents and / or are toxic. In turn, the aminophenol polymerization inhibitors of the present disclosure can be used to significantly reduce polymer contamination of purified monomer products and minimize the maintenance costs of such facilities.

[0012] In an embodiment, the present disclosure provides a method for inhibiting polymerization of a monomer in a monomer-containing composition or a composition capable of forming a monomer, the method comprising adding a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor to a composition containing a polymerizable monomer or capable of forming a polymerizable monomer, the polymerization inhibitor being a compound of formula I: [ka]

For example, R 6 and / or R 7 is the formula:-R 9 OR 10 wherein R 9 is a hydroxylated hydrocarbylene group, R 10 is a hydrocarbyl group. In yet another embodiment, R 6 and R 7 One or both of the groups are hydroxylated hydrocarbyl groups.

[0018] In embodiments, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors can be used without or with little to no nitroxyl-based polymerization inhibitors, yet still provide excellent ability to inhibit polymerization of monomers in solution.

[0019] Advantageously, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds of the present disclosure can exhibit the characteristics of both polymerization inhibitors and polymerization retarders as described herein. For example, the compounds of the present disclosure can inhibit the formation of polymers from those monomers during the induction time, and then after the induction time, reduce the rate at which polymer formation occurs compared to the rate at which it would have been formed in the absence of the polymerization retarder. This is beneficial because the polymerization inhibitor method can be carried out without the need to use different types of polymerization inhibitor compounds, such as mixed or added to the monomer-containing composition at different times. In turn, this can streamline line operations and reduce processing and material costs, as well as improve the quality of the monomer-containing composition, since less compound needs to be added. [0021] Although the present disclosure provides reference to preferred embodiments, those skilled in the art will recognize that changes may be made in form and detail without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Reference to various embodiments is not intended to limit the scope of the claims appended hereto. Moreover, any examples described herein are not intended to be limiting, but merely set forth some of the many possible embodiments of the appended claims.

[0022] Additional advantages and novel features of the invention will be set forth in part in the description which follows, and in part will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon examination of the following or may be learned by routine experimentation in the practice of the invention.

[0023] The present disclosure provides methods and compositions that include nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors to prevent the undesired formation of polymers. The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor compounds provide excellent polymerization inhibitor activity similar to many nitroxyl-containing polymerization inhibitors. As such, the methods of the present disclosure do not necessarily require the simultaneous addition of a nitroxyl-containing polymerization inhibitor for the treatment of the monomer stream, although in some implementations, the nitroxyl-containing polymerization inhibitor can be used together with the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor if desired.

[0024] The effectiveness of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds of the present disclosure may be improved when certain conditions are desired (e.g., when the use of nitroxyl-containing polymerization inhibitors is not recommended, e.g., when NO 3 is not present in a monomer-containing composition). x This allows for greater flexibility in inhibiting polymerization of the monomer composition, such as when it is desirable to minimize or eliminate emissions.

[0025] The composition containing the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor and any one or more optional components can be in a desired form, such as a liquid form, a dry form, or a suspension or dispersion. The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be in a desired physical state in the composition, such as a dissolved state, a partially dissolved state, a suspended state, or a dry mixture. The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can also be in a desired form in the composition, such as a particulate form. When the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor is in particulate form, the particles can be described in terms of particle size (e.g., particle size range) and / or shape. The form of the composition and the state of the components therein can be selected by the selection of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor with an understanding of its physical properties.

[0026] "Polymerization inhibitor" refers broadly to "polymerization inhibitors" and "polymerization retarders," which are generally compounds that prevent or reduce the formation of polymer from one or more radically polymerizable compounds.

[0027] In the presence of polymerizable monomers, a "polymerization inhibitor" inhibits the formation of polymer from those monomers during an induction period. After the induction period has elapsed, the formation of polymer occurs at substantially the same rate as in the absence of the polymerization inhibitor. Nitroxyl-containing compounds such as HTEMPO are considered polymerization inhibitors.

[0028] A "polymerization retarder" does not exhibit an induction time, but instead, once added to a polymerizable monomer composition, reduces the rate at which polymer formation occurs compared to the rate that would have been formed in the absence of the polymerization retarder. Quinone methide compounds are examples of polymerization retarders.

[0029] In contrast to polymerization retarders, polymerization inhibitors are generally consumed quickly. Polymerization retarders slow down the rate of polymerization reactions, but not as effectively as polymerization inhibitors. However, polymerization retarders are usually not consumed as quickly as polymerization inhibitors.

[0030] In embodiments, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds of the present disclosure can exhibit the characteristics of a polymerization inhibitor, a polymerization retarder, or both a polymerization inhibitor and a retarder. The use of a single compound having the characteristics of both a polymerization inhibitor and a retarder can be particularly beneficial in some implementations, since it can reduce the need to include different polymerization inhibitor compounds in the monomer-containing composition. However, it is understood that the polymerization inhibitor composition of the present disclosure is not limited to the use or presence of a single compound having inhibitor / retarder characteristics, and can be optionally used with other types of polymerization inhibitors, such as those known in the art, if desired.

[0031] The form of the composition and the state of the ingredients therein may also be affected by the inclusion of one or more optional ingredients, such as a solvent or solvent mixture, or other excipient compounds, such as surfactants, dispersants, etc. The form of the composition and the state of the ingredients therein may also be affected by temperature, and the properties of the composition may optionally be described in the context of a particular temperature (e.g., a storage temperature of 5° C. or below, room temperature (25° C.), or a temperature used for the synthesis and / or processing of the monomers (e.g., above about 100° C., about 150° C., about 175° C., etc.).

[0032] As previously mentioned, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor composition may include other ingredients such as solvents, surfactants, dispersants, etc. If an optional ingredient is present in the composition, it may be described in terms of weight relative to the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor. The optional ingredient may be present in an amount greater than, about the same as, or less than the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor by weight.

[0033] As used herein, the terms "optional" or "optionally" mean that the subsequently described object (e.g., compound), event (e.g., processing step), or circumstance may occur, but need not occur, and that the description includes cases where the object, event, or circumstance occurs as well as cases where they do not occur.

[0034] The compositions of the present disclosure may include those recited compounds, and may optionally include other components in the composition, but in very small amounts (e.g., described with respect to a composition "consisting essentially" of the recited components). For example, such compositions may include one or more other components, but not in amounts greater than about 1% (wt), greater than about 0.5% (wt), greater than about 0.1% (wt), or greater than about 0.01% (wt) of the total composition. A composition consisting essentially of a solid component (e.g., dissolved in a solvent) that is a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor may optionally include one or more other (e.g., solid) components, but less than about 1% (wt) of the total composition weight. In a composition "consisting" of the recited components, there are no other measurable amounts of components other than the recited components. In some embodiments, the nitroxyl-containing polymerization inhibitor may optionally be present in an amount of less than 1% (by weight), less than 0.5% (by weight), less than 0.1% (by weight), or less than 0.01% (by weight) of the total composition, and more preferably, the nitroxyl-containing polymerization inhibitor is not present in the composition at detectable levels.

[0035] As used herein, the terms "substantially" and "consist essentially of" modifying the type or amount, property, measurable amount, manner, location, value, or range of a component in a composition, for example, when describing an embodiment of the present disclosure, refer to variations that do not affect the generally recited composition, property, amount, manner, location, value, or range in a manner that invalidates the intended composition, property, amount, manner, location, value, or range. Examples of intended properties include, by way of non-limiting examples only, dispersibility, stability, speed, solubility, and the like, and intended values include weight of added component, concentration of added component, and the like. Effects on the modified method include effects caused by variations in the type or amount of materials used in the process, variations in machine settings, effects of ambient conditions on the process, and the like, where the manner or degree of the effect does not invalidate one or more intended properties or results, and similar approximation considerations. When modified by the terms "substantially" or "consist essentially of," the claims appended hereto include equivalents of these types and amounts of materials.

[0036] As used herein, the term "about" to modify, for example, amounts, concentrations, volumes, process temperatures, process times, yields, flow rates, pressures, and similar values and ranges of components in a composition used in describing embodiments of the present disclosure, refers to variations in numerical quantities that may occur, for example, due to typical measuring and handling procedures used to make a compound, composition, concentrate, or use formulation; due to accidental errors in these procedures; due to differences in the manufacture, source, or purity of starting materials or components used to carry out the method, and due to similar approximation considerations. The term "about" also encompasses amounts that differ due to degradation of a formulation having a particular initial concentration or mixture, and amounts that differ due to mixing or processing a formulation having a particular initial concentration or mixture. When modified by the term "about", the appended claims include equivalents of these amounts. Furthermore, when "about" is used to describe any range of values, unless otherwise limited by the context, for example, the statement "about 1 to 5" means "1 to 5" and "about 1 to about 5" and "1 to about 5" and "about 1 to 5".

[0037] The compositions and methods of the present disclosure include or use polymerization inhibitors with tertiary nitrogen and oxygen-containing aromatic chemistry. The nitrogen and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors include at least an unsaturated six-carbon ring structure with one or more hydroxyl or alkoxy groups attached to a ring carbon atom and a nitrogen atom of a tertiary amine group attached to another ring carbon, the nitrogen atom of the tertiary amine group is attached to a first carbon-containing group and a second carbon-containing group, and at least one of the first and / or second carbon-containing groups includes an oxygen atom separated from the nitrogen atom of the tertiary amine group by one or more carbon atoms. For example, the oxygen atom is separated from the nitrogen atom by one carbon atom, preferably by two carbon atoms, preferably by three carbon atoms, by four carbon atoms, or by five carbon atoms.

[0038] The portion of the unsaturated 6-carbon ring structure having one or more hydroxyl or alkoxy groups may consist of an aryl ring or may be part of a fused ring structure that includes the unsaturated 6-carbon ring structure. Preferred nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors use 6-carbon ring structures such as phenol, pyrocatechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, hydroxyhydroquinone, or fluororucitol. However, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatics may also be based on hydroxyl-containing fused aromatic chemistry such as naphthol, hydroxyanthracene, or indenol.

[0039] In embodiments, the first and / or second carbon-containing group contains a single oxygen atom in the form of an ester group or in the form of a hydroxyl group, while in other embodiments, the first and / or second carbon-containing group contains two oxygen atoms, such as one in the form of an ester group and one in the form of a hydroxyl group.

[0040] In embodiments, the first and / or second carbon-containing group contains from 1 to about 18, 2 to about 16, or 3 to about 12 carbon atoms, from 3 to about 40, 5 to about 30, or 7 to about 25 hydrogen atoms, 1, 2, 3, or 4 oxygen atoms, or any combination thereof. In preferred embodiments, the carbon-containing group contains only carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen.

[0041] Preferred nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds of the present disclosure are "bis" nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds, i.e., nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds in which the first and second carbon-containing groups attached to the nitrogen atom of the tertiary amine group are the same. For example, in the aminophenol compound 4-bis[(6-ethoxyhexyl)amino]phenol, the first and second carbon-containing groups are the same and are -(CH 2 ) 2 O(CH 2 ) 5 CH 3 It is.

[0042] Other "non-bis" nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatics are contemplated, such as those in which the first and second carbon-containing groups are different, provided that at least one carbon-containing group contains an oxygen atom separated from the nitrogen atom of the tertiary amine by at least one, preferably two or more carbon atoms. Exemplary "non-bis" compounds can include those in which the first carbon-containing group is selected from ether and carbon-containing groups, hydroxyl and carbon-containing groups, and hydroxyl, ether, and carbon-containing groups, and the second carbon-containing group is selected from hydrocarbyl groups (non-oxygen-containing), such as alkyl (linear, branched, cyclic), aryl, alkylaryl, and arylalkyl. Other exemplary "non-bis" compounds can include those in which both the first and second carbon-containing groups contain one or more oxygen atoms, but have different chemical properties. For example, the first and second carbon-containing groups can be selected from ether and carbon-containing groups, hydroxyl and carbon-containing groups, and hydroxyl, ether, and carbon-containing groups, provided that the first and second carbon-containing groups have different chemical properties. The different chemical properties may be reflected by different isomeric forms of oxygen and carbon containing groups.

[0079] Nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds that can be used as polymerization inhibitors are also described in commonly assigned U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 840,133, entitled "Oxygenated Aromatic Amines and Use as Antioxidants," filed April 29, 2019, having Docket No. N11270USP1 (ECO0176 / P1).

[0080] The amount of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor, and any other (optional) components in the composition can be described in a variety of ways, such as the weight percent (wt%) or molar amount of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor in the composition. When other components are used together with the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor, such compounds can also be described in terms of weight ratios or in terms of their relative amounts relative to each other in the composition.

[0081] In some embodiments, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatics of either formula I or II can be used without or with minimal nitroxyl-containing polymerization inhibitors. If nitroxyl-containing polymerization inhibitors are included, they can be present in very small amounts, such as in compositions containing polymerizable monomers, where no nitroxyl-containing polymerization inhibitors are present or only in very small amounts (less than 50 ppm).

[0082] For example, in a composition comprising a polymerizable monomer and a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor, the nitroxyl group-containing polymerization inhibitor can optionally be present in an amount of less than 50 ppm, less than 25 ppm, less than 10 ppm, less than 5 ppm, less than 2.5 ppm, less than 2 ppm, less than 1.5 ppm, less than 1 ppm, less than 0.75 ppm, or less than 0.5 ppm.

[0083] Compounds containing nitroxyl groups are thermally unstable species that trap propagating monomer radicals and inhibit polymerization. Nitroxyl / nitroxide groups, also called amine-N-oxide groups, are functional groups that contain an NO bond and a side group that is attached to nitrogen. Nitroxide (nitroxyl) radicals are oxygen-centered radicals with a free electron delocalized on the NO bond. Nitroxide-containing polymerization inhibitors may contain NO resonance structures that contribute to the stability of the nitroxide radical. [ka]

Any of these compounds can be present in the polymerizable monomer composition in very small amounts (less than 50 ppm, 25 ppm, 10 ppm, etc. as described herein) or can be excluded from the composition entirely.

[0086] The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be present in a composition having a solvent or a combination of solvents. The solvent or combination of solvents can be selected such that one or more of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors are soluble in the solvent or combination of solvents. If the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor is a liquid at ambient conditions, a miscible solvent can be selected.

[0087] Useful solvents include any solvent in which the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor is soluble or can be stably suspended. In some embodiments, the solvent or combination of solvents can be selected from water-soluble or water-miscible solvents, such as glycol-based solvents, and hydrophobic or hydrocarbon solvents, such as aromatic solvents, paraffinic solvents, or a mixture of both.

[0088] Exemplary glycol solvents are C 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118, 119, 120, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 13 1 -C 8 Examples of suitable solvents include, but are not limited to, glycol, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, triethylene glycol, triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, liquid polyethylene glycols, ethers of such glycols such as dipropylene glycol, dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether, dipropylene glycol monoethyl ether, and low molecular weight polypropylene glycols, and combinations thereof. Commercially available solvents such as Butyl Carbitol and Butyl CELLOSOLVE™, which contain primarily Butyl CARBITOL™, which consists primarily of ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, can be used and are available from DOW.

[0089] Other exemplary hydrophobic or hydrocarbon solvents include heavy aromatic naphtha, toluene, ethylbenzene, isomeric hexanes, benzene, xylenes, such as ortho-xylene, para-xylene, or meta-xylene, and mixtures of two or more thereof.

[0090] In some embodiments, the solvent is selected from glycols and aromatic naphthas, and combinations thereof.

[0091] The amount of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor (including one or more optional components) in the solvent, or combination of solvents, can be described in one or more ways, such as by the percent solids (by weight) of the components in the composition, or by the molar amount of the solid components in the composition.

[0092] As an example, a stock composition of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be dissolved in a solvent in an amount ranging from about 0.00001% (wt), to a concentration of at least about 5% (wt), for example, from about 0.00001% (wt) to about 50% (wt).

[0093] A quantity of a stock composition containing the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added to a monomer-containing composition or a composition capable of forming a monomer to provide the polymerization inhibitor in a concentration effective to inhibit polymerization of the monomer.

[0094] The polymerizable monomers that are subjected to the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibition can contain vinyl or ethylenically unsaturated groups. For example, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor component and any optional components can be added to a composition that includes one or more of the following polymerizable monomers: acrolein, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, alkylated styrene, butadiene, chloroprene, divinylbenzene, ethyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, isoprene, methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, α-methylstyrene, methacrylonitrile, styrene, styrene sulfonic acid, vinyl acetate, vinyl toluene, and vinyl pyridine.

[0095] The polymerizable monomer can be present in a crude mixture of compounds, a semi-purified mixture of compounds, or a fully purified mixture of compounds. For example, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added to a process stream that contains a polymerizable monomer and one or more other components different from the polymerizable monomer. In the method, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added before, during, or after (or a combination thereof) a processing step, such as distillation, in which the compounds in the composition are separated from each other. The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can inhibit the polymerization of monomers at any one or more stages in the processing system, thus reducing or preventing equipment fouling.

[0096] Alternatively, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added to a process stream that includes compounds that can form polymerizable monomers (e.g., monomer precursors), such as ethylbenzene, a precursor to styrene. For example, in embodiments, the composition can include compounds that can form polymerizable monomers as undesirable by-products. In this situation, the presence of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can inhibit polymerization of the monomers, if formed as by-products, and thus reduce or prevent fouling of equipment.

[0097] In embodiments, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor is introduced into a monomer-containing composition or a composition containing a compound capable of forming a polymerizable monomer at a desired concentration effective to inhibit monomer polymerization. The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added to a composition containing one or more polymerizable monomers or one or more compounds capable of forming a polymerizable monomer. The monomer and / or monomer-forming compound can be present in the composition at any concentration, for example, in very small amounts (ppm), or the monomer and / or monomer-forming compound can be present in the composition in bulk amounts (e.g., 50% (by weight) or more). Exemplary ranges are from about 5 ppm, about 20 ppm, about 50 ppm, or about 100 ppm (0.1%) to about 10% (by weight), about 25% (by weight), about 50% (by weight), or about 75% (by weight). In some embodiments, at a polymerizable monomer concentration in the range of about 50 to about 200 ppm,

[0098] The amount of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor in a composition containing a monomer and / or monomer-forming compound can be selected based on the monomer / compound type, the amount of monomer / compound in the composition, the type of composition having the monomer / compound, any processing, treatment, or storage conditions of the composition, and the presence of any one or more optional compounds different from the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor that are added to the composition. The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added to the composition in an amount that provides the desired level of polymerization inhibition.

[0099] In embodiments, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be used in an amount of at least about 0.10 ppm, e.g., in the range of about 0.10 ppm to about 50,000 ppm, about 0.10 ppm to about 25,000 ppm, about 0.10 ppm to about 10,000 ppm, about 25 ppm to about 5,000 ppm, about 25 ppm to about 2,500 ppm, about 50 ppm to about 1,000 ppm, about 50 ppm to about 1,000 ppm, about 75 to about 500 ppm, about 100 to 300 ppm, about 125 to about 275 ppm, or about 150 to about 250 ppm.

[0100] In some implementations, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor is used before or after the polymerizable monomer-containing composition is treated with a polymerization inhibitor different from the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic, such as a nitroxide-containing polymerization inhibitor (e.g., HTEMPO, etc.). In some implementations, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor is added to the polymerizable monomer composition after the composition has been treated with the nitroxide-containing polymerization inhibitor, and the inhibitor has at least substantially consumed or at least lost most of its inhibitor activity. For example, the nitroxide-containing polymerization inhibitor can be added to the monomer-containing composition at a first time point, and then the composition can be monitored to determine either an increase in the formation of polymer and / or the presence of the inhibitor, and if there is an increase in the formation of polymer or a decrease in the inhibitor, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added at a second time point to maintain inhibition of polymerization.

[0101] In another mode of practice, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added to the monomer-containing composition at a first time, and then one or more other compounds useful for inhibiting polymerization other than the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatics can be added to the composition at one or more later time points (e.g., a second, third, etc.).

[0102] The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added to the polymerizable monomer composition in one or more different ways, such as adding the polymerization inhibitor in a single dose, continuous addition, semi-continuous addition, intermittent addition, or any combination of these methods. In continuous addition, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added at a constant or variable rate. The mode of addition of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be selected based on the polymerizable monomer-containing composition and how it is stored, processed, or otherwise handled. For example, in a process stream that includes the transfer and separation of polymerizable monomers, or compounds that can form polymerizable monomers, from other components such as a distillation unit, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added continuously or semi-continuously to account for the new monomers or monomer precursors that are constantly being introduced.

[0103] The term "fouling" refers to the formation of polymers, prepolymers, oligomers, and / or other materials that become insoluble in a stream and / or precipitate from the stream and deposit in the equipment under the conditions of operating the equipment. In turn, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors can be referred to as "fouling inhibitors" because they prevent or reduce such formation.

[0104] Optionally, the ability of the composition of the present disclosure to inhibit polymerization can be illustrated by comparison with a composition that does not contain a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor or that contains a comparative compound. The effect of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be understood by measuring the formation of polymer (e.g., polystyrene) over time in a monomer (e.g., styrene) composition in the presence of a composition that contains a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor, compared to one that does not contain a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor or one that uses a polymerization inhibitor with a different chemical nature than that of the present disclosure. The beneficial polymerization inhibitor effects of various nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds are illustrated with reference to the examples of this disclosure and the data shown in Tables 1 and 2 (e.g., for N,N-bis(2-hydroxy-2-phenylethyl]-p-aminophenol (BHPEAP), N,N-bis[3-(2-ethylbutoxy)-2-hydroxypropyl]-p-aminophenol (BEBHPAP), and N,N-bis-(3-butoxy-2-hydroxypropyl)-p-aminophenol (BBHPAP)). In these examples, a solution of styrene and polymerization inhibitor was prepared. Polymerization was allowed to proceed at 120° C., and the reaction was quenched by removing the sample from the heat and placing it on ice every 20 minutes for up to 2 hours. Polymer concentrations were measured and reported as weight percent.

[0105] For example, compositions of the present disclosure that include a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can inhibit polymerization of monomers by more than 50%, more than 60%, more than 70%, more than 80%, more than 85%, more than 90%, more than 92.5%, more than 95%, or more than 97% compared to compositions that include a non-nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic (e.g., di-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone) under the same conditions.

[0106] The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors can be used in combination with compositions containing polymerizable monomers and "process equipment" associated with the process and that may be subject to fouling from monomer polymerization, such as reactors, reactor beds, pipes, valves, distillation columns, trays, condensers, heat exchangers, compressors, fans, impellers, pumps, recirculators, intercoolers, sensors, etc. The term also includes sets of these components where multiple components are part of a "system."

[0107] In one preferred method of use, the disclosed composition comprising a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor and a solvent (e.g., glycol) is used in a process comprising a distillation column used to separate and purify vinyl monomers such as styrene. For example, in processes known in the art, ethylbenzene can be subjected to a catalytic dehydrogenation reaction resulting in the formation of styrene. The reaction product containing styrene also includes other materials such as aromatic compounds such as toluene and benzene, unreacted ethylbenzene, and polymers. This mixture of compounds is typically fractionally distilled using one or more distillation columns. Typically, heat is used to help separate the components in the distillation column. After distillation, the fractionated components can be separated into pure product streams of higher purity. Optionally, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor is used with one or more secondary components such as stabilizers such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and tert-butylcatechol (TBC). In an exemplary embodiment of the practice, these components are used in a distillation column used to separate and purify vinyl monomers.

[0108] The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor-containing composition can be introduced into the stream leading from the reaction bed to the distillation column or added directly to the distillation column. The composition can be added before heating the monomer composition or while heating the monomer composition in the distillation column. In an embodiment, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor compound has a higher boiling point than the desired compound or distillate (e.g., monomers such as styrene) that is fed to the distillation column, and during the distillation process, the desired compound is separated from the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor compound by the temperature difference. In an embodiment, the boiling point difference between the desired compound and the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor is about 10°C or more, about 15°C or more, about 20°C or more, about 25°C or more, about 30°C or more, about 35°C or more, about 40°C or more, about 45°C or more, or about 50°C or more.

[0109] Alternatively, or in addition to adding a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor during the distillation process, the composition can optionally, or additionally, be added to a distillation effluent stream, such as a purified styrene stream. Optionally, another polymerization inhibitor can be added to the distillation effluent prior to or together with the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor.

[0110] The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors can be used with any "hydrocarbon process stream" that may contain unsaturated monomers, optionally in combination with one or more other components, to stabilize the stream during transportation and storage. In some implementations, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors can be used in combination with a "petroleum product," which refers to any hydrocarbon product obtained from an underground reservoir, any product derived therefrom, or any mixture thereof. The polymerizable monomers can be contained in the petroleum product or chemically derived from the petroleum product. Non-limiting examples of petroleum products include, but are not limited to, crude oil, reduced crude oil, crude distillate, heavy oil, or by-products of petroleum product processing, such as bitumen, hydrotreated oil, refined oil, pyrolysis, hydrotreating, or phase separation, or mixtures of two or more thereof. A liquid petroleum product is a petroleum product that is substantially liquid at 20°C.

[0111] The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors may be added to or present in a "petroleum process stream," which refers to any petroleum product placed within a petroleum process facility in fluid contact with its internal surfaces.

[0112] The petroleum process stream may contain one or more polymerizable monomers or may be formed as a by-product. The process stream may be substantially static, such as a petroleum product placed in a settler (separator) or storage vessel for a selected contact period, such as up to two years. The process stream may be substantially dynamic, such as a liquid petroleum product placed in a pipe during transportation of the product from a first location to a second location. In some embodiments, the process stream includes one or more additional components associated with petroleum processing, such components are not limited thereto.

[0113] "Petroleum processing equipment" or "petroleum processing unit" refers to a man-made object having an interior surface that includes metal and that further comprises one or more petroleum products, for any period of time and at any temperature, as determined by context. Petroleum processing equipment includes items for removing petroleum products from underground reservoirs, for transporting one or more petroleum products from a first location to a second location, or for separating, refining, treating, separating, distilling, reacting, metering, heating, cooling, or containing one or more petroleum products.

[0114] In embodiments, compositions including the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors are thermally stable and have polymerization inhibitor activity in process streams or other polymerizable monomer-containing compositions at temperatures of from about 20° C. to about 400° C., e.g., from about 100° C. to about 400° C., or from about 100° C. to about 350° C., or from about 100° C. to about 300° C., or from about 100° C. to about 250° C., or from about 100° C. to about 200° C., or from about 100° C. to about 150° C.

[0115] In embodiments, the composition comprising the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be introduced into a composition comprising a polymerizable monomer, such as a liquid petroleum process stream, in a batch, continuous, or semi-continuous manner. In some embodiments, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor (and any other optional components) are introduced manually, while in other embodiments, their introduction is automated. In embodiments, the amount of the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor introduced over a selected time unit varies with the variable composition of the associated process stream. Such variability in feed can be implemented manually by periodically testing the internal surfaces of the process equipment, after adjusting the amount of the composition up or down based on test results, or automatically, after monitoring one or more conditions inside the petroleum process equipment and notifying the need to apply more of the composition to the process stream.

[0116] In some embodiments, the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor is added to a petroleum product that is crude oil, reduced crude oil, heavy oil, bitumen, coker charge, hydrotreater influent, hydrotreater effluent, flash crude oil, light cycle oil, or diesel or naphtha refinery stream. In embodiments, the polymerization inhibitor is added to petroleum process equipment that is conventionally associated with the gathering, processing, transporting, or storing of one or more of crude oil, reduced crude oil, crude oil distillate, heavy oil, bitumen, coker charge, flash crude oil, light cycle oil, or diesel or naphtha refinery streams, and includes piping and associated infrastructure used to fluidly connect process equipment items to facilitate the processing of the process streams located therein.

[0117] Equipment containing a polymerizable monomer-containing composition treated with a nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor and any other optional ingredients can reduce or eliminate fouling of the interior surfaces of the equipment. In an embodiment, fouling is measured as a relative increase in the retention of solids in the treated composition compared to the retention of solids in the untreated composition over the same period. In an embodiment, fouling is measured as a relative reduction in the weight or volume of sediment resulting from a selected contact period of the treated process stream in the relevant process equipment item compared to the same contact period of the process equipment with the corresponding untreated process stream. In other words, the reduction in fouling is the relative reduction in the measured weight or volume of solids deposited or precipitated from the process equipment contacted with the treated process stream over a selected period of time when compared to the weight or volume of solids deposited or precipitated from the untreated process stream over the same period of time.

[0118] Nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitors can also inhibit undesirable polymerization and fouling of process equipment in primary fractionation processes, light ends fractionation, non-aromatic vinyl halide fractionation and stabilization, process gas compression, dilution steam systems, caustic towers, quench towers, quench water separators (pyrolysis gasoline), butadiene extraction, propane dehydrogenation, diesel and gasoline fuel stabilization, olefin metathesis, styrene refining, hydroxyhydrocarbon refining, stabilization of vinyl monomers during transportation and storage, or retard polymerization of resins and compositions containing ethylenically unsaturated species.

[0119] The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added at one or more locations at any given time in the process. For example, the polymerization inhibitor composition can be added directly to an interstage cooler or compressor, or upstream of an intercooler or compressor. The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be added continuously or intermittently to process equipment as needed to prevent or reduce fouling.

[0120] The nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be introduced into the desired system by any suitable method. For example, it may be added neat or in a dilute solution. In some embodiments, the composition containing the nitrogen- and oxygen-containing aromatic polymerization inhibitor can be applied as a solution, emulsion, or dispersion that is sprayed, dripped, poured, or injected into the desired opening in the system, or into the process equipment or process condensate. In some embodiments, the composition may be added with a cleaning oil or tempered water.

[0121] After the composition is introduced into the process equipment, the treated process equipment may be observed to have less build-up on the equipment than the process equipment without the addition of the composition. The reduction or prevention of fouling may be evaluated by any known method or test. In some embodiments, the reduction or prevention of fouling may be accessed by measuring the time it takes for samples to gel with and without the antifoulant composition. EXAMPLES

[0122] Example 1: Synthesis of N,N-bis-(2-hydroxy-2-phenylethyl)-p-aminophenol

[0123] The following was placed in a 3-neck 1 L round bottom flask equipped with a magnetic follower: 45.396 g (815.3 mmol) styrene oxide, 45.396 g (407.7 mmol), and 142.804 g styrene oxide. Two stoppers and a condenser were fitted to the flask. The flask was placed on a heating block, followed by refluxing the reaction mixture under stirring for 6 hours. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed to give a viscous gum. The product was characterized to confirm purity and structure.
