Description

[Technical Field]

[0001] The present invention relates generally to a golf cup device for initiating a predetermined action, and in one aspect, to an advertising device or system for a golf cup or for initiating a predetermined action. Another aspect of the invention relates to a golf ball lifting device positionable in a hole on a golf green. [Background technology]

[0002] Particularly in high-profile golf tournaments, the putts on each hole, and perhaps even the putt on the final hole, attract significant crowd attention, which presents an opportunity to display messages, such as advertising messages, in connection with the crowd's focus on the putting green of a golf hole.

[0003] Golf holes are typically formed on putting greens by cutting plugs 108 mm in diameter and 100 mm deep. However, some golf holes are formed as deep as 150 mm. To prevent excessive wear, it is customary to stagger golf holes on putting greens, with new holes being cut and old holes being filled. Golf cups are inserted into the holes to provide structural support for the golf holes. In high-profile tournaments, metal golf cups are installed in the holes, providing a liner for the hole and a base for the cup with a vertical aperture that can support a flagstick. A drainage hole is also drilled through the base to prevent the cup from filling with water. Plastic golf cups are also used in other tournaments and are commercially available.

[0004] The prior art includes several proposed advertising methods for golf cups, including fixed insertions within the cup. These include those described in U.S. Patent Nos. 6,712,714, 6,676,531, 5,788,581, 5,362,044, 5,351,950, 5,249,384, and 4,878,665. These fixed displays are primarily visible to those on the golf green near the hole, such as players or caddies retrieving balls. Therefore, they do not provide effective display to a larger audience. Using such displays for advertising purposes limits the advertising scope.

[0005] The prior art presents two proposals for advertising displays in automatic ball retrieval machines associated with golf cups, in published patent specifications WO 2004 / 020050 and WO 2007 / 011159. These proposed structures are complex and flimsy, requiring multiple telescopic elements to elevate the ball cradle or holder sufficiently above the ground to facilitate ball retrieval while simultaneously providing a useful display for advertising purposes. The ball cradle is elevated sufficiently above ground level. As a result, a user's foot or other item may become pinched between the underside of the ball cradle and the ground when the cradle is lowered. Therefore, the proposed devices are practically unsuitable for use in golf course situations and pose a risk of injury to the user.

[0006] Another problem with existing golf holes is that players can damage the grass around the top of the hole, for example, by using the player's club to retrieve the ball from the hole. Additionally, it can sometimes be difficult for older players to retrieve the ball from the hole.

[0007] It should be understood that throughout this specification, any discussion of prior art is included solely for the purpose of providing a context for the present invention, and should not be considered an admission that such prior art is widely known or forms part of the general knowledge in the art because it exists prior to the priority date of this application. [0009] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an advertising apparatus or system for golf holes and / or to provide a ball-raising device. Another object of the exemplary embodiments is to overcome at least some of the aforementioned problems, or at least provide the public with a useful alternative. The aforementioned objects need not necessarily be considered overlapping. Various aspects of the present invention may satisfy one or more of the above-mentioned objects. [Means for solving the problem]

[0010] The present invention may be broadly understood to include a device positionable within a hole on a golf green for providing advertising, either physical printed advertising or virtual advertising, or a combination thereof. In another aspect of the present invention, a lifting device is provided for assisting in retrieving golf balls from a golf hole.

[0011] In one embodiment of the present invention, but not necessarily the broadest or only embodiment: a base supportable within or forming part of a golf cup positionable within a golf hole of a golf green; a ball support member connected to the base and movable between a retracted position and a raised position by a drive; a generally annular-shaped indicative support secured to an upper surface of the ball support member, the indicative support extending upwardly from the golf holes above the golf green surface when the ball support member is in the raised position; a ball guide positioned within the ball support member for urging a received golf ball into the guide position; a sensor located at or adjacent the guide location for controlling operation of the drive to raise or lower the ball support member depending on the presence of a golf ball; An advertising device is proposed that includes:

[0012] The indicia support is movable from a retracted position, where the indicia support is substantially below the putting surface, to a raised position, where the indicia support extends upward from the top of the golf cup, thereby providing an indicia visible above the golf green surface.

[0013] In one form, the display support comprises a vertical, flat strip of material wrapped to form a circular portion and attached to a ball support member, with advertising printed on or affixed to the strip of material or having advertising projected thereon.

[0014] Preferably, when the golf ball activates the sensor, the ball support member is moved from a retracted position to an elevated position, thereby presenting the indicia support above the golf green surface. When the golf ball is removed from within the ball support member, the sensor activates a drive member to move the ball support member from an extended position to a retracted position, with the indicia support positioned substantially within the golf cup and below the golf green surface.

[0015] Activation of the sensor may also control other external devices, such as, but not limited to, a range finder, an acoustic device, an audio listening device, or may cue other advertisements, such as animation or multi-layered advertisements presented in a broadcast program, or may initiate another predetermined action.

[0016] A control member may be mounted to the base and coupled to the drive, which may be an electric motor preferably powered by an integrated power supply.

[0017] The sensor is preferably coupled to the actuator and may provide a signal to activate the control member when the ball enters the golf cup, thereby operating the drive.

[0018] The sensor may include a contact sensor whereby contacting the ball provides a signal to the actuator to operate a motor to raise the ball-receiving member. Alternatively, the sensor may be, for example, a light beam source and a photodetector whereby, when the ball enters the golf cup, the light beam is broken and a signal is immediately sent to the actuator to operate the motor.

[0019] In the case of an electric motor, the apparatus preferably further comprises return switch means for signalling or acting on the actuator to reverse the motor and thereby retract the ball support member when the ball is removed.

[0020] When the ball support member is in the raised position, the outwardly facing periphery of the indicator support extends above the top of the golf cup and the golf green surface. This arrangement provides the indicator support in the raised position, with the indicator turned on or projected, and positioned above the golf green surface. The indicator support is laterally visible from outside the golf hole, thereby being easily seen and indicated, for example, by spectators or television viewers.

[0021] In one embodiment, the ball support member includes an upper portion that projects above the golf cup when in the raised position, the upper portion forming the indicia support, and in another embodiment, the indicia support is removably attached to the upper portion of the ball receiving member.

[0022] The sign may be attachable to the display support and provide advertising, or the display support may itself comprise advertising. For example, the display support may comprise a strip of plastic material with advertising printed directly onto the strip. Or the advertising may comprise a printed sticker that may be affixed to a blank display support. Display units of various shapes may also be used. Preferably, the advertising can be easily replaced or changed.

[0023] It should be understood that several other options exist for the display. Thus, for example, an advertisement or display may include a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or similar illumination to provide either a dynamic or static display. In this manner, a dynamic display may change its message or at least attract more attention than a static display.

[0024] The LED display may be connected to the same power source as the motor, whereby the LED display is connected to a battery housed in the base of the device.

[0025] The displayed message may optionally be remotely selected, whereby a message selection transmitter can send a signal to a message selection receiver of the device to select the message to be displayed.

[0026] Alternatively, the indicia may be printed on the card or formed in plastic, and may be inserted into a suitable holding device in the indicia support, or simply fixed to the indicia support.

[0027] In yet another form, the display support may include a blue screen or similar colored surface used in visual effects technology, upon which advertising is virtually overlaid within the broadcast environment.

[0028] The ball support member in one form has a generally circular outer perimeter wall that is dimensioned to be slidably positioned within the golf cup. Preferably, the ball support member fits snugly within the golf cup to prevent debris from entering between the outer perimeter wall of the ball support member and the inner surface of the golf cup.

[0029] It should be understood that the outer peripheral wall of the ball support member, if it fits snugly within the golf cup, will either slidably engage the inner surface of the golf cup or be spaced apart within the golf cup. While the inner diameter of a golf cup may vary, a standard golf cup has an outer diameter of 4.25 inches (10.795 cm). Thus, the diameter of the ball support member may be between 10.5 and 10.794 cm.

[0030] The ball support member preferably has a vertical cavity therethrough to allow the passage of water.

[0031] The base preferably includes an upwardly projecting post that slidably supports an elevator member thereon, the elevator member being rigidly secured to the lower portion of the ball-receiving member.

[0032] In one form, the drive comprises a first arm rigidly connected at a first end to a rotatable mounting on the control member and pivotally connected at a second end to a second arm, the second end of which is in turn pivotally connected to a fixed mounting point on the lifting member.

[0033] Alternatively, the ball support member and the lift member are a unitary structure, with the second end of the second arm connected thereto.

[0034] In use, when the rotatable mount of the control member is moved, the first arm is pivoted which in turn pivots the second arm, thereby raising or lowering the ball-receiving member.

[0035] The ball support member preferably includes a central aperture to allow passage of a regular-sized flagstick so that the flagstick can be inserted through the ball support member and into the flagstick aperture in the golf cup. Alternatively, the central aperture may be configured to support the flagstick so that when the ball support member is moved to the raised position, the flagstick is also moved upward.

[0036] Typically, the top of a golf cup is set below the putting surface, and the Rules of Golf stipulate that the top of the golf cup be a minimum of 25.4 mm (1 inch) below the surface of the green. Therefore, the reader will understand that the upward elevation of the indicia support at the top of the golf cup extends at least partially above the putting surface. In one form, the indicia support has a bottom portion that extends above the top of the golf cup by at least 25.4 mm (1 inch). The total height of the indicia can be 40-50 mm.

[0037] The height to which the indicia support can be raised can be adjusted to compensate for the distance between the playing surface and the top of the golf cup or to compensate for the actual depth of the golf cup.

[0038] The amount of elevation can be pre-set within a specific range. This elevation is set once inserted into a specific golf cup (of which the device is not a part) in a specific golf hole, so that the elevation of the display support will always be the same regardless of the depth of the hole unless reset. When the same device is positioned in another golf hole, the range of elevation can be reset.

[0039] In one form, the base of the device is shaped to contact an upwardly facing surface inside the golf cup. The upright contact surfaces of the base are shaped to fit snugly against two or more opposing upright surfaces inside the golf cup. The upright contact surfaces of the base and the golf cup provide lateral stability for the device. The upright contact surfaces of the golf cup may be the sides of a liner or the inside sides of a drainage hole in the golf cup.

[0040] The base preferably has a shape complementary to the overall shape of the bottom portion of the golf cup. For example, the shape may include a cylindrical sidewall and an inverted cone-shaped base. The flagstick aperture may be in the bottom of the golf cup and coaxially aligned with the flagstick aperture, one for the central aperture of the ball support member. Additionally, the base of the device also includes a central aperture through which the flagstick can pass.

[0041] In one form, the drive unit comprises an arm or arm member. Alternatively, the drive unit may comprise at least one rack and pinion, or at least one biasing spring with a stop for limiting lift of the display support, and a catch for capturing the display support and moving it to a retracted position against the bias of the spring. Additionally, the drive unit may be a threaded member, whereby the motor rotates a rotatable threaded member to effect lift.

[0042] The motor includes a waterproof housing to prevent damage from water seepage. In this embodiment, the device preferably further includes a battery to power the motor. Alternatively, the motor is connected by wires to an external power source, such as, but not limited to, a solar array.

[0043] The display support can be directly raised vertically, or the display support can be rotated between a retracted position and an extended position.

[0044] The reader should understand that this device can be fitted or positioned within a conventional golf cup. In another aspect, the present invention should be understood to encompass a golf cup with an automatic elevating indicator support. Accordingly, the present invention provides a golf cup having a base, a liner, and an elevating indicator support for insertion into a golf hole cut in the playing surface. The elevating indicator support is movable between a retracted position and an elevated position, and when in the elevated position, the indicator support extends upwardly from within the golf hole above the surface of the playing surface when a ball enters the golf cup.

[0045] In another aspect of the invention, the advertisement may be a virtual advertisement that is displayed on a display screen adjacent to the golf hole when the golf ball lands in the golf cup, and thus the advertisement can be incorporated into a television broadcast for display on the television and display screen.

[0046] In the immediately preceding device: a sensor positioned within a golf cup on a green of a golf course and configured to indicate the presence of a golf ball within the golf cup; a transmitter for transmitting a signal; a processing unit for receiving the signal and overlaying the image onto a video feed of the golf course green; a broadcasting unit for broadcasting the video footage with the overlaid image for viewing; Includes.

[0047] The image may be a still image, a series of images, or a video image overlaid on video footage of a golf course green.

[0048] To turn the device on / off or change operating modes, the device includes a push-button switch sealed with a rubber covering. Operating modes include, but are not limited to, the ball support remaining in a raised position until the golf ball is removed, and the ball support moving up and remaining in the raised position for a set period of time, then returning to the lowered position with the golf ball still inside. The device may further include a recharging port, including but not limited to a USB recharging port.

[0049] A preferred form of the drive includes an overload mechanism, which comprises a detachable arm portion coupled to the rotor. The detachable arm portion may include a main portion including a first magnet and a subordinate portion including a second magnet. When sufficient downward pressure is applied to the ball support member or display support, the magnetic force between the first and second magnets is overcome and the main portion is induced to disengage from the subordinate portion and move away from the subordinate portion to a lowered position. A damping device may be used to control independent rotation of the main portion about the rotor when disengaged from the subordinate portion's magnet.

[0050] In another aspect of the present invention, a method is provided for presenting advertising adjacent to a golf cup when a golf ball is retained therein, the method comprising: Providing a sensor in the golf cup configured to determine whether a golf ball is present therein; activating a physical advertising element or presenting a virtual advertising element overlaid with a broadcast image when the golf ball is positioned within the golf cup; Includes.

[0051] Preferably, the processing unit includes a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphic user interface (GUI).

[0052] In yet another aspect of the present invention, a software program is proposed for controlling the operation of any of the above-mentioned devices and for applying the above-mentioned methods.

[0053] The software program may be implemented as one or more modules for initiating the steps of the present invention. These modules may be packaged functional hardware units for use with other components or modules. Multiple central processing units (CPUs) may be used to control the operation of the device. For example, a device contained within a golf cup may include a designated CPU, and a television broadcast controller may include a separate CPU.

[0054] Some of the components of the device may be connected by, but not limited to, a modem communication path, a local area network (LAN), a computer network such as the Internet, or a hardwired cable.

[0055] In one form, the broadcast control device includes a computer having memory in the form of random access memory (RAM) and read only memory (ROM), a central processing unit, an input / output (IO) interface, and at least one data storage device.

[0056] The processor and memory cooperate with each other and with the other components of the computer to perform all of the functions described herein. In another embodiment, the processor executes appropriate software to perform all of the functions described herein. In an alternative embodiment, some of the functions described herein may be implemented using dedicated electronic devices hardwired to perform the described functions.

[0057] The application software may be stored on a computer-readable medium in a storage device such as a hard drive, a magneto-optical disk drive, a CD-ROM, an integrated circuit, a radio or infrared transmission channel between a computer and another device, a computer-readable card such as a PCMCIA, a flash drive, or any other non-volatile storage device. The foregoing are merely examples of relevant computer-readable media. Other computer-readable media may be practiced without departing from the scope of the present invention.

[0058] In another embodiment, the device includes software or firmware, embedded with corresponding hardware, that is designed to perform one or more dedicated functions of the present invention.

[0059] Preferably, the video broadcast will be transmitted to a television screen over a network such as, but not limited to, a digital television network or a satellite network.

[0060] It is assumed that the signal sent by the transmitter will be in a different frequency than the signal sent by the broadcast unit. For example, television broadcasts are generally in the UHF range of 300-3000 MHz, so the signal sent by the data logger may be in the HF range (3-30 MHz) used in shortwave communications, or in the EHF range (30-300 GHz) used in microwave data links, or in the 0.9-5.6 GHz range for WiFi or Bluetooth® short-range communications.

[0061] In one form, the information is sent to a television broadcast controller for display on a video display screen, such as a large screen, at the competition venue, broadcast over a television or telecommunications network for viewing away from the venue, or for an augmented viewing experience for mobile phone users at the venue.

[0062] In yet another aspect of the present invention, a ball lift assembly for a golf cup is provided, comprising: a sensor positioned within the golf cup and configured to indicate the presence of a golf ball within the golf cup; a ball support member positioned within the golf cup and movable between a retracted position and an elevated position by a drive; an actuator for operating a drive portion to raise the golf ball upon receiving a signal from the sensor, whereby the golf ball may be retrieved by a user or may be configured to eject the golf ball from the golf cup; Includes.

[0063] Preferably, when the golf ball activates the sensor, the ball support member is moved from the retracted position to the raised position, thereby ejecting the golf ball from the golf cup or moving the golf ball into a position where it can be grasped by a player. When the golf ball is ejected or removed from within the ball support member, the sensor activates a drive to move the ball support member from the extended position to the retracted position. A mechanical switch may be used to terminate the lowering of the ball support member when it has been lowered to a predetermined depth.

[0064] A control member such as an electric motor may be mounted on the ball support member and connected to the drive. In the case of an electric motor, the apparatus preferably further comprises return switch means for signalling or acting on an actuator to reverse the motor and thereby retract the ball support member when the ball is removed.

[0065] The sensor is preferably coupled to the actuator and provides a signal to activate the control member when the ball enters the golf cup to operate the drive. The sensor may include a contact sensor whereby contact with the ball provides a signal to the actuator to activate the motor to raise the ball-receiving member.

[0066] Alternatively, the sensor may be, for example, a light source and a photodetector, whereby when the ball enters the golf cup, the light beam is broken and a signal is immediately sent to the actuator to activate the motor. Still alternatively, an optical distance measuring sensor may be used to determine the position of the ball or the absence of a ball.

[0067] The ball support member preferably has a vertical cavity therethrough to allow the passage of water.

[0068] The accompanying drawings, which are incorporated in and constitute a part of this specification, illustrate the practice of the invention and, together with the detailed description and claims, serve to explain the advantages and principles of the invention. [0070] Like reference symbols indicate corresponding parts throughout the drawings. Dimensions of certain parts shown in the drawings may be modified and / or exaggerated for clarity or illustrative purposes.

[0071] Referring now to the drawings for a more detailed description, an advertising device 10 positionable within or forming part of a golf cup 12 is illustrated to demonstrate, by way of example, an arrangement in which the principles of the present invention may be utilized. As illustrated in the drawings, the device 10 includes a base 14 having feet 16 configured to rest on a bottom plate 18 of the golf cup 12. The golf cup 12 includes the bottom plate 18 and a cylindrical liner 20 and is positionable within a hole 22 cut in a playing green 24. As illustrated in FIG. 1 , the top of the golf cup 12 is positioned a distance below the playing green 24.

[0072] Apparatus 10 further includes a ball support member 26, which is rigidly secured to lift member 28. Lift member 28 is slidably engaged to a post 30 that extends upwardly from base 14. A drive unit 32 is connected to a fixed attachment point 34 on lift member 28 and to a rotatable attachment 36 on a control member 38, which in this embodiment is an electric motor. In this embodiment, drive unit 32 includes a first arm 40 and a second arm 42, with first arm 40 rigidly connected at a first end to rotatable attachment 36 on control member 38 and pivotally connected at a second end to second arm 42. The second end of second arm 42 is pivotally connected to fixed attachment point 34.

[0073] The reader should understand that the motor 38 is connected to a power source such as, but not limited to, a battery (not shown).

[0074] A generally annular-shaped display support 44 is secured to and extends upwardly from the ball support member 26. While the display support 44 is illustrated in the drawings as being generally blank, it should be understood that indicia may be applied to or incorporated into the display support 44 for advertising or display purposes. For example, an advertisement or company logo may be applied to or printed on the display support 44 to promote goods or services of a merchant. Additionally, although not illustrated, the display support may include illuminated display means, such as, but not limited to, LED lights or other illumination means.

[0075] In this embodiment, ball support member 26, lift member 28, and display support 44 are all movable between a retracted position as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 and an elevated position as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. When display support 44 extends upwardly from golf cup 12, advertising on the exterior of display support 44 can be viewed from the side and at a distance from golf cup 12, thereby improving exposure of the advertisement or display.

[0076] 2, the ball support member 26 includes an upwardly facing chamber 46 for receiving a golf ball 48 therein. The ball support member 26 includes a ball guide portion 50, which urges the golf ball 48 to a guide position 52, whereby the golf ball 48 contacts or activates a sensor 54. In this embodiment, the sensor 54 is a contact sensor including a body 56 and a vertical contact shaft 58.

[0077] The drive unit 32 is configured to move the display support 44 between a retracted position, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, in which the display support 44 is positioned within the golf cup 12, and an elevated position, as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, in which the display support 44 extends upward from the top of the golf cup 12 and is positioned substantially above the playing green 24, as illustrated in Figure 3. In this manner, advertising on the display support 44 can be viewed from a distance from the golf hole 22, which is advantageous for brand promotion to spectators in the gallery and in broadcast footage of the golf tournament. The advertising can also be projected onto the display support 44 for viewing by broadcast viewers.

[0078] The sensor 54 controls the operation of the drive unit 32 to change the position of the display support 44 depending on whether or not a golf ball 48 is present within the ball support member 26 .

[0079] FIG. 5 is an exploded view of device 10 illustrating the various components. As illustrated in FIG. 5, ball support member 26 includes an annular step 60, which is used to mount indicia support 44 thereto. As such, the outer periphery of ball support member 26 and adjacent indicia support 44 are generally the same shape as illustrated in FIGS. 1-4. This means that when indicia support 44 is mounted, no ridges or lips are created that could catch or jam the top edge of golf cup 12 during use.

[0080] The lifting member 28 includes a depending sleeve 62 that fits over the post 30. The sleeve 62 includes a recess 64 that houses the motor 38 when the lifting member 28 is in the retracted position.

[0081] As further illustrated in FIG. 5, the base 14 includes a mounting portion 66 for mounting a motor frame 68 thereon.

[0082] Those skilled in the art will understand that fastening means, such as screws, bolts, and nuts, used to assemble the device are not illustrated. Additionally, while the display support 44, ball support member 26, and lift member 28 are illustrated as separate components, the reader should understand that all or some of them may be structurally integrated without departing from the scope of the present invention.

[0083] FIG. 6 illustrates ball support member 26, including an annular, upwardly extending wall 70 forming upwardly facing recess 46, a web portion 72 generally defining the bottom of ball support member 26, and outer and inner guide members 50 and 76, both extending upwardly from web portion 72 and configured to control movement of golf ball 48 once golf ball 48 enters ball support member 26 such that golf ball 48 is urged toward guide position 52.

[0084] As further illustrated in FIG. 6, the sensor 54 is positioned adjacent to the guide position 52 so that the vertical contact shaft 58 is contacted by the golf ball 48 when the golf ball 48 is moved to the guide position 52 by the guide members 50, 76.

[0085] As illustrated in FIGS. 8 and 9, the guide members 50, 76 are tilted so that the balls roll under the influence of gravity to their corresponding lowest positions in the guide positions 52.

[0086] Ball support member 26 includes a central aperture 78 that is configured to allow a flagstick 90 to pass therethrough, as described with respect to FIG.

[0087] 10a illustrates the above embodiment in which the upper surface of the guide member is positioned along a single plane 80, represented by a dashed line. The sensor 54 is positioned on a lower portion of the plane 80, and the contact shaft 58 can be contacted by the golf ball 48 when the golf ball 48 is in the guide position 52.

[0088] In another embodiment, as illustrated in Figure 10b, different sections of the guide member are positioned along surfaces 82 and 84, which meet at vertex 86, as represented by the dashed line. In the previous embodiment, the guide forms two guide locations 52a, 52b. Correspondingly positioned sensors 54a, 54b are located at or adjacent to each guide location 52a, 52b.

[0089] 11 illustrates a possible position of the indicia 88 on the display support 44. In the raised position, the indicia 88 is laterally visible from outside the golf hole, thereby being easily seen and shown to, for example, television viewers, or at least by a gallery watching the tournament.

[0090] 11, a flagstick 90 with an attached flag 92 can remain in place even when the ball support member 26 and display support 44 are in the raised position. This is because the flagstick 90 passes through the central aperture 78 of the ball support member 26 and engages with a conventional flagstick aperture 94 in a golf cup. Alternatively, the central aperture 78 can be configured to support the flagstick 90 such that when the ball support member 26 is moved to the raised position, the flagstick 90 is also moved upward.

[0091] Another embodiment of device 10 is disclosed in Figures 12-24, which illustrates device 10 including a base 14 having feet 16 configured to rest on top of bottom plate 18 of golf cup 12. However, the reader should understand that device 10 and golf cup 12 may be of unitary construction, whereby the device of the present invention is used in place of a conventional golf cup.

[0092] The device 10 of this embodiment further includes a ball support member 26 rigidly mounted on generally vertical shafts 100, 102. The vertical shafts 100, 102 slidably engage the base 14 and act as guides for the ball support member 26 as it is moved vertically. A driver 32 is pivotally connected to the ball support member 26 and rotatably connected to a mounting portion 36 of the control member 38. In this embodiment, the driver 32 includes a first arm 40 and a second arm 42, the first arm 40 being connected at a first end to the rotatable mounting portion 36 of the control member 38 and pivotally connected at a second end to the second arm 42. The second end of the second arm 42 is pivotally connected to the ball support member 26.

[0093] The sensor 54 is connected to a mounting plate 104, which also has a switch 106 mounted thereon. The switch 106 controls operation of the motor when the ball support member 26 is retracted by contact with a protrusion 108, as illustrated in FIG.

[0094] 25, the advertisement display may be a virtual advertisement 110. The virtual advertisement 110 is displayed adjacent to the golf hole 22 on the display screen of the controller 112 from footage captured by a camera 114 when the golf ball 48 enters the golf hole 22. The advertisement may thus be incorporated into the television broadcast footage 116 for display on the television and display screen 118.

[0095] This embodiment includes the features of the immediately preceding embodiment of the device, but with a transmitter 120 used in place on the display support 44. Thus, when the sensor 54 located within the golf cup 12 indicates the presence of a golf ball 48, the transmitter 120 is configured to transmit a signal that is processed by the controller 112. The advertising image 110 is overlaid on a video image 122 of the golf course green 24, which is then broadcast.

[0096] The advertising image 110 may be a still image, a series of still images, or a video overlaid on video footage of a golf course green.

[0097] 26 and 27, the device 10 may include a ball lift assembly for the golf cup 22. The ball lift assembly is substantially the same as the previously described embodiment, but does not have the display support 44 attached to the ball support member 26. The ball lift assembly of the present invention may be used with virtual advertising 110, as previously described. This embodiment may assist older players in retrieving the ball while restricting the player from damaging the grass around the top of the hole.

[0098] In yet another embodiment, FIGS. 28-32 illustrate an alternative configuration of device 10, which includes a generally straight contact shaft 58 in contact sensor 54. Operation of contact shaft 58 is the same as described above, but in this embodiment, contact shaft 58 has a larger clearance to prevent it from catching on the edge of ball support member 26. Aperture 10 further includes a push-button switch 124 sealed with a rubber covering. Push-button switch 124 is used to change device modes and turn the device on and off. A USB recharge port 126 is also provided for recharging the internal battery (not shown). While not shown, USB recharge port 126 preferably includes a flexible cover.

[0099] As further illustrated in FIGS. 30-35, the internal guide member 76 includes beads 128 of elastically deformable material applied to its upper surface. These beads 128 act to prevent the ball from bouncing out of the golf hole when the flag is not in place. The beads 128 may be understood to act as a "bounce damper" for the golf ball. In one embodiment, small beads of silicone are applied to the top of the internal guide member 76. However, the reader should understand that beads may be placed elsewhere within the device to act as a cushion and reduce the ball's ability to bounce off hard surfaces. The beads 128 may be applied by hand, printed, or otherwise formed on any hard surface within the device 10.

[0100] The reader should understand that device 10 receives a small amount of power and that it generally does not need to be turned on and off when device 10 is positioned at a golf hole. However, it is preferable to turn device 10 off during transport to prevent device 10 from being unexpectedly activated and possibly damaged. In one embodiment, three modes are envisioned: Mode 1 - upon activation by a golf ball 48, the ball support member 26 remains in the raised position until the golf ball 48 is removed; Mode 2 - when activated by a golf ball 48, the ball support member 26 moves up and remains in the raised position for a set period of time, then returns to the lowered position with the golf ball 48 remaining therein; and Mode 3 - Stationary or off mode.

[0101] The drive section 32 of the preferred embodiment includes an overload mechanism, which comprises a detachable arm portion 130 connected to a rotor 136, as illustrated in Figures 33-40. The detachable arm portion 130 may include a main portion 132 containing a first magnet and a subordinate portion 134 containing a second magnet. The end of the main portion 132 is pivotally connected to the second arm 42, as best illustrated in Figure 34.

[0102] The main portion 132 is independently rotatably coupled to the rotor 136, and the subordinate portion 134 is fixed to the rotating portion of the rotor 136. Under normal conditions, the respective magnets hold the main portion 132 and the subordinate portion 134 in a fixed arrangement relative to each other. When a threshold downward pressure is applied to the ball support member 26 or the display support 44 in the direction of the arrow in FIG. 34, the magnetic force between the first and second magnets is overcome. The main portion 132 is then configured to move away from the subordinate portion 134 and around the rotor 136 to a lowered position, as illustrated in FIG. 35. This overload mechanism protects the motor and other mechanical components of the device 10 from damage due to misuse or accidental contact. For example, if a person pushes down on ball support member 26 when ball support member 26 is in the raised position, or if an obstacle is placed over the hole when ball support member 26 is in the lowered position, the overload mechanism will be activated, thereby protecting device 10 from damage.

[0103] Figures 36-38 illustrate the drive unit 32 independent of many other components, with Figure 38 showing the actuation of the overload mechanism and the subsequent movement of the subordinate portion 134 back to the lowered position. The reader should understand that when the drive unit 32 is next operated back to the lowered configuration, the rotor 136 and the subordinate portion 134 attached thereto rotate back to the lowered position, causing the magnets in the primary and subordinate portions 132, 134 to be magnetically coupled as shown in Figure 36. The drive unit 32 can then continue normal operation until another actuation event occurs.

[0104] 39 and 40 , flexible band 138 is positioned around protrusion 140 on main portion 132. Flexible band 138 is configured to lean against raised portion 142 on rotor 136. The purpose of flexible band 138 is to dampen movement of main portion 132 when it magnetically decouples from subordinate portion 134 during an actuation event, such as when someone forcibly presses down on ball support member 26. This prevents main portion 132 from suddenly falling under the influence of the weight of ball support member 26 and damaging the mechanism. Flexible band 138 can therefore be considered a damping device to prevent damage when an actuation event occurs.

[0105] Those skilled in the art will appreciate the many advantages of the illustrated invention. In one form, the invention provides an advertising medium that utilizes previously underutilized areas. Additionally, the invention, in one form, provides a means for automatically lifting golf balls to allow easier retrieval by players while providing valuable advertising space. In one form, the device may be a separate module that can be retrofitted into existing golf cups without the need for retrofitting. This configuration of the device also means that it can be used even when a flag is positioned within the golf cup.

[0106] While many features of the present invention have been shown and described in detail in conjunction with exemplary embodiments of the invention, it should be understood that these particular arrangements are exemplary only, and that the present invention is not limited thereto. Accordingly, the present invention can include many modifications which are within the spirit and scope of the present invention. For purposes of this specification, the words "comprise," "comprises," or "comprising" mean "including, but not limited to."
