Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] (CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS) This application claims the benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 62 / 935,446, filed November 14, 2019, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present disclosure relates to tamper-evident blister packaging and methods thereof. [Background technology]
[0003]
[0003] Traditional packaging of products, such as food items and pharmaceutical products, that may be ingested by consumers involves considerations such as preventing physical damage to the product or maintaining the product free of bacterial, chemical, or microbial contamination. More recently, manufacturers of packaged products have also taken into account the possibility that their products may be intentionally tampered with by third parties. Product tampering is a concern for all manufacturers of goods because of the impact such tampering has on the product's performance and thus on the manufacturer's reputation and prestige, as well as the potential for injury to those using the tampered product. The problems faced by those working in the food and pharmaceutical industries, where the products are ingested, are particularly serious. Contamination of food and pharmaceutical products with hazardous materials can have serious consequences.
[0004] It is therefore desirable for retailers, consumers, and manufacturers to have a way to determine if packaging has been altered so that the product can be rejected, thereby reducing the likelihood of tampered product being consumed.
[0005] One such conventional method is disclosed in European Patent No. 0162378 assigned to Intini. Intini involves a tamper-evident package having a blister pack sealed between front and rear layers through an opening created through the blister pack. In other words, an opening is formed through the blister pack to allow the front / rear layers to be joined together.
[0006] Despite such conventional packaging methods, the fact remains that malicious tampering with the product still occurs and can result in great damage, such as loss of sales as well as consumer confidence.
[0007] Accordingly, the present invention is directed to a packaging system and method that provides a visual indication of product opening and, therefore, product tampering. The packaging system and method of the present invention is adaptable for use in a variety of environments and can be integrated into many existing packaging devices with minimal effort. [0047] [Figure 6] FIG. 1 is a side view illustrating a tamper-evident blister package, according to one embodiment. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0048] The following disclosure details specific embodiments that provide improvements to tamper / integrity-evident packaging and methods in which a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer is bonded to the backing material of the blister cavity and / or compartment through a contact window, in one embodiment, provided in the sleeve. The contact window is provided with an opening sufficient to allow any product and / or pellets within the blister cavity to be released therefrom. The pressure-sensitive adhesive layer may optionally be perforated in a manner generally aligned perpendicular to the contact window.
[0049] Referring now to the drawings, FIGS. 1-5 disclose a tamper-evident blister package 1 having a sleeve 3 with a top side 3A and a bottom side 3B. The package 1 houses a blister assembly 12 with a cavity 7 containing a consumable product or pellets 9. The pellets 9 may be any one of a chewing gum or other confectionery or a food product such as a pharmaceutical pill, as desired. The sleeve 3 may have a cutout 13 on the bottom side 3B to allow easy reach and access to the blister assembly 12. One or more access windows 5 may also be provided to allow user interaction via digital pressure or force to dispense the pellets 9 from the cavity 7. User access and interaction with the pellets 9 in the blister assembly 12 may be achieved by direct pressure on the top side 3A or by other means via visual location cues such as indentations or contours provided on the sleeve 3.
[0050] 2 and 3 , a contact window 21 is provided on the bottom side 3B of the sleeve 3 directly above and vertically aligned with at least one of the blister cavities 7. The contact window 21 aligns opposite the access window 5 and has an opening wide enough to allow pellets 9 to be dispensed from the cavity 7. Once the product / pellets 9 are packaged in the cavities 7 of the blister assembly 12, the blister assembly 12 is slidably inserted into the sleeve 3, with the contact window 21 vertically aligned with any one of the blister cavities 7. The cavities 7 may be encapsulated by a membrane or backing material 19, such as foil, plastic, or paperboard. If desired, multiple contact windows 21 may be created in the sleeve 3.
[0051] Thereafter, a package integrity feature 15 (e.g., a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer) is applied to the bottom side 3B of the sleeve 3 over the contact window 21. This adhesive layer 15 then bonds to both the sleeve 3 and the backing material 19 of the blister cavity 7 through the contact window 21, locking the sleeve 3 and the blister assembly 12 together (via the backing material 19). The adhesive layer 15 may be provided over substantially the entire bottom side 3B of the sleeve 3, or may be configured more narrowly, for example, only over the contact window 21. It should be noted that the improvement of the tamper-evident package 1 of the present invention can still be achieved by adhering the pressure-sensitive adhesive 15 directly to the cavity 7 of the sleeve 3 without the use of a membrane 19, if the packaging of the pellets 9 does not further require such use of a membrane 19. In such a configuration, the adhesive layer 15 directly bonds the sleeve 3 and the blister assembly 12 together.
[0052] Additionally, as shown in Figures 2 and 3 below, contact window 21 is optionally covered by some indicia 17 of the manufacturer or manufacturer, such as a UPC label. In this way, indicia 17 makes it visually detectable if the seal is broken, preventing the item from being purchased (i.e., unable to be scanned at the register). Alternatively, indicia 17 can also contain additional features to indicate that it was made by the original manufacturer and was not a counterfeit.
[0053] The adhesive layer 15 may be formed from an elastomer and a tackifier. The elastomer may be a material such as, but not limited to, natural rubber, vinyl ether, acrylic, butyl rubber, styrene block copolymer, silicone, or nitrile. The tackifier may be a material such as, but not limited to, terpene, aromatic resin, hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin, or terpene-phenolic resin. The adhesive layer 15 may be permanent or temporary.
[0054] 4 and 5, user pressure on the access window 5 to dispense pellets 9 through the blister cavity 7, as well as sliding / removing the blister assembly 12, will damage the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer 15, providing a tamper indication. As shown, the contact window 21 in the bottom side 3B of the sleeve 3 is shown, as is the optional (open) perforated adhesive layer 15, which creates a cleaner appearance when accessed by the user. In other words, the perforations in the adhesive layer 15 generally outline the perimeter of the contact window 21. Also, an optional printed indicia, manufacturer, or manufacturer 17 (e.g., a UPC label), once broken, provides an additional indication prior to tampering or access to the product / pellets 9.
[0055] Referring now to Figure 6, there is shown a side cross-sectional view of a tamper-evident blister package 1 of the present invention. Package 1 has a sleeve 3 with a top side 3A and a bottom side 3B, within which a blister assembly 12 is slidably provided. Assembly 12 further includes a cavity 7 for optionally containing a pellet 9. Sleeve 3 further provides an access window 5 that allows user interaction via digital pressure or force to dispense pellet 9 from cavity 7.
[0056] 6 , a contact window 21 is provided on the bottom side 3B of the sleeve 3 directly above and vertically aligned with at least one of the blister cavities 7. The contact window 21 has an opening wide enough to allow a pellet 9 to be dispensed from the cavity 7. As can be seen, the blister assembly 12 is slidably inserted into the sleeve 3, with the contact window 21 vertically aligned with any one of the blister cavities 7. The cavity 7 may be enclosed by an optional membrane or backing material (not shown). Multiple contact windows 21 may be created in the sleeve 3 if desired.
[0057] As shown, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer 15 is applied to the bottom side 3B of the sleeve 3 over the contact window 21. This adhesive layer 15 then bonds to both of the blister cavities 7 of the sleeve 3 through the contact window 21, locking the sleeve 3 and blister assembly 12 together. The adhesive layer 15 may be provided over substantially the entire bottom side 3B of the sleeve 3, or may be configured more narrowly, for example, only over the contact window 21.
