Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to an article carrier and also to a blank for forming the same. More particularly, although not exclusively, the present invention relates to an upper grip type carrier having one or more apertures for receiving and holding articles therein, and an upper cover secured thereto.
Background Art
[0002] In the field of packaging, it is known to provide a carton for transporting a plurality of articles. Cartons are well known in the art and are useful for enabling consumers to transport, store, and access groups of articles for consumption. For cost and environmental considerations, such cartons or carriers need to be formed from as little material as possible and need to minimize waste in the materials from which they are formed. Further considerations are the strength of the carton and its suitability for holding and transporting large quantities of articles. It is desirable that the contents of the carton be secure within the carton.
[0003] It is well known to provide an upper grip article carrier where an aperture is formed in a panel of the carrier and a tab is struck from said aperture. Claims
1. An article carrier for engaging with at least one article, the article carrier comprising spaced-apart panels, including an upper panel and a lower panel, the article carrier comprising a locking tab formed from the upper panel, the locking tab providing a retaining device for securing the upper panel in a suitable position above the lower panel, at least a portion of the locking tab being disposed between the upper panel and the lower panel to maintain the spacing between the upper panel and the lower panel, the locking tab comprising one or more separating elements defining an engaging edge of the engaging portion, the engaging edge being disposed to engage with a first surface of the lower panel.
2. The article carrier according to claim 1, wherein the locking tab protrudes downward through an opening in the lower panel, and the locking tab engages with the periphery of the opening in the lower panel.
3. The article carrier according to claim 1, wherein the upper panel includes a composite cover panel formed from an upper covering flap and a lower covering flap, the upper covering flap and the lower covering flap at least partially overlapping, the upper covering flap includes the locking tab, and the lower covering flap includes an opening defined by one or more female tabs.
4. The article carrier according to claim 3, wherein the locking tab engages with at least one of the female tabs.
5. The article carrier according to claim 4, wherein at least one of the female tabs protrudes downward through an opening in the lower panel.
6. The article carrier according to claim 4, wherein the locking tab engages around an opening in the lower panel and engages with at least one recessed portion of the female tab.
7. The article carrier according to claim 3, wherein at least a portion of the one or more female tabs is disposed between the upper panel and the lower panel to maintain the gap between the upper panel and the lower panel.
8. The article carrier according to claim 1, wherein the one or more separating elements define a support edge of a wing portion, the support edge is positioned to engage with a second surface of the lower panel, and the second surface of the lower panel faces the first surface of the lower panel.
9. The article carrier according to claim 1, wherein the locking tabs are oriented diagonally with respect to the upper panel and the lower panel.
10. The article carrier according to claim 1, wherein the upper panel includes a composite cover panel formed from an upper covering flap and a lower covering flap, the upper covering flap and the lower covering flap overlap at least partially, the upper covering flap includes a first male locking tab, and the lower covering flap includes an opening defined by a second male locking tab.
11. The article carrier according to claim 1, wherein the locking tab is hinged to the upper panel along a conceptual fold line that extends diagonally to at least one of the end edge and side edge of the upper panel.
12. A blank for forming an article carrier, the blank comprising a pair of panels arranged to be spaced apart in a set-up carrier, the pair of panels comprising an upper panel and a lower panel, the blank comprising a locking tab formed from the upper panel, the locking tab providing a retaining device for securing the upper panel in a suitable position above the lower panel in a locked state, at least a portion of the locking tab being disposed between the upper panel and the lower panel, maintaining the spacing between the upper panel and the lower panel in the locked state, the locking tab being hinged to the upper panel along a conceptual fold line extending obliquely to a fold line along the side edge of the upper panel.
13. The blank according to claim 12, wherein the locking tab is hinged to the upper panel along a fold line located on the conceptual fold line.
14. The article carrier according to claim 1, further comprising a handle structure partially formed from the upper panel and partially formed from the lower panel, wherein the handle structure includes a cushioning flap, the cushioning flap being formed from the upper panel and folded into a gap between the upper panel and the lower panel, and the cushioning flap providing the locking tab.
15. The blank according to claim 12, wherein the locking tab in the locked state protrudes downward from the opening of the lower panel, and the shoulder portion of the locking tab provides an engaging edge that engages with the periphery of the opening of the lower panel, and functions as a tension member to prevent the gap from widening.
16. The blank according to claim 12, wherein the locking tab includes one or more separation elements defining one or more of the engaging edges of the locking tab, and one or more of the engaging edges are arranged to engage with the lower surface of the lower panel.
