Description

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 661,990, filed on Jun. 20, 2024, entitled “PISTOL SLIDE WITH IMPROVED GAS MANAGEMENT”, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all that is taught and disclosed therein.FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] The present disclosure relates to firearms, namely pistols.BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY

[0003] The present embodiment of the disclosure is a pistol slide compromised of distal porting, a raised gas deflection surface and a barrel with a muzzle aperture proximal to the primary ports. Once the projectile exits the muzzle of the barrel there is a flash of burning powder which results in a shockwave forming that will overtake the projectile. In legacy designs this gas has been left to exit the muzzle and provide no additional benefits or has been directed through ports that are integral to the barrel and exiting through ports in the slide. The first legacy case allows for gas to obstruct weapon mounted lights and lasers and provides no benefit to recoil management. The second legacy case provides for some recoil management, but it comes with the same issues of gas obstruction, detrimental impact on accuracy due to the interruption in the barrels rifling and limits on the type of projectiles supported by the system. Additionally legacy designs with porting in the barrel provide no seal between the slide and barrel interface. This allows particulate and carbon to be introduced into the mechanical components of the host firearm potentially leading to malfunctions.

[0004] The above disadvantages are addressed by a pistol comprising a frame, a slide operable to reciprocate with respect to the frame and having an upper surface and a forward end. A barrel received by the slide and having a muzzle spaced rearward from the forward end of the slide, and the upper surface of the slide being sloped upward forward of the muzzle of the barrel.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0014] The present embodiment of the invention is a pistol slide compromised of distal porting, a raised gas deflection surface and a barrel with a muzzle aperture proximal to the primary ports. As part of the firing cadence once the bullet is discharged the slide begins moving rearward until pressure within the system has decreased enough to make unlocking the breach safe. The disclosed invention captures the gas and directs it vertically to reduce muzzle rise while simultaneously slowing the slide cycling to further reduce chamber pressure and inertia-based recoil effects. Additionally, the disclosed invention utilizes a raised surface on the slide to provide additional area for the gases to act upon, further enhancing their effectiveness in recoil and slide velocity reduction. The raised surface at the distal end of the slide also enables sufficient wall thickness to ensure structural integrity of the slide. Gasses are directed in such a way as to keep them from impacting the functionality of weapon mounted accessories as well as the aiming devices installed on the frame. Future embodiments of the disclosed invention will include front sights integrated to the gas management surface.

[0015] FIG. 1 depicts a side profile of present embodiment of the disclosure.

[0016] FIG. 2 depicts a side profile cross section of present embodiment of the disclosed invention with barrel recessed from distal end of slide.

[0017] FIG. 3 depicts Distal porting on the present embodiment of the disclosure.

[0018] FIG. 4 depicts Distal porting on the present embodiment of the disclosure with raised enhanced gas management surface.

[0019] FIG. 5 depicts a recessed muzzle as shown from the distal end of the present embodiment of the disclosure.

[0020] FIG. 6 depicts an alternative embodiment of the enhanced gas management surface with integral front sight.

[0021] FIG. 7 depicts the barrel, still in lockup and gas flow is restricted to only allow it to travel forward as well as upward through the porting in the slide. Once the bullet exits the muzzle, there is a release of high-pressure gas that seeks to a pathway of least resistance to ambient pressure.

[0022] FIG. 8 depicts the slide, while it begins to move backward. The ports also begin to be obstructed by the barrel lessening the effects upon its inertia as the pressure dissipates.

[0023] FIG. 9 depicts the slide as it reaches its fully locked rearward position. The barrel is now completely past the ports and all remaining gas is allowed to exit straight from the muzzle as well as from the breach during extraction of the spent case.
