[0002] The disclosure describes headwear including a headband loop and a crown. The headband loop is configured to encircle a wearer's head and has forward, rearward, left side and right side segments. The crown is pivotably coupled to the headband loop.

The headband loop is configured to encircle a wearer's head and has forward, rearward, left side and right side segments. [0017] The following detailed description illustrates embodiments of the present disclosure and manners by which they can be implemented. Although the best mode of carrying out the present disclosure has been disclosed, those skilled in the art would recognize that other embodiments for carrying out or practicing the present disclosure are also possible.
[0018] It should be noted that the terms “first”, “second”, and the like, herein do not denote any order, quantity, or importance, but rather are used to distinguish one element from another. Further, the terms “a” and “an” herein do not denote a limitation of quantity, but rather denote the presence of at least one of the referenced item.
[0019] Existing headwear does not provide a practical, effective, or ergonomic way to store, protect, and isolate medium-to-long as well as full-volume hair or hairstyles fully inside the headwear and off the nape of the neck during daytime use, particularly in outdoor, warm-weather, aquatic, or public environments. Conventional hats and headwear require users to forcefully tuck, push, trap, twist, or stuff hair upward through a fixed headband, narrow opening, or small rear aperture in order to wear the hat. This process is difficult, time-consuming, and often ineffective for high-volume, textured, or delicate hairstyles. It creates friction, compression, and localized pressure that can flatten hair, disrupt curl patterns, strain roots, cause frizz and damage styled hair. In addition, such configurations commonly leave hair pressed against or hanging along the nape of the neck, trapping heat and moisture and increasing discomfort in warm conditions.
[0020] As a result, users frequently avoid wearing hats altogether when hair protection, sun protection, or thermal comfort is most needed. Existing alternatives—such as bonnets, shower caps, scarves, or nighttime head coverings—may protect hair but are generally unsuitable for daytime or public wear, lack structural support, do not maintain a conventional hat appearance and do not allow for comfortable use in outdoor or social settings.
[0021] Embodiments of the disclosure provide headwear in the form of a visor, bucket hat, bonnet or helmet designed to receive the wearer's hair first and then close around it, rather than forcing hair into place after the hat is already positioned on the head. By enabling hair to be gathered naturally into an open crown configuration and then enclosed via a hinged structure, the headwear provides a full internal hair storage volume in which substantially all of the wearer's hair is contained within the crown of the hat, without requiring hair to pass through, protrude from, or hang outside the headwear.
[0022] Unlike conventional headwear, which requires hair to be forcefully pushed upward through a fixed opening, disclosed hats and headwear receive the hair first and then close around it by a hinging or pivoting motion. By eliminating the need for forceful insertion, compression or exposure of hair, disclosed hats and headwear reduce friction, compression, and mechanical disturbance of the hair and hairstyle, making it significantly easier and more effective to protect styled, textured or high-volume hair while remaining cool, comfortable, and appropriately styled for daytime, outdoor, and public use, all while maintaining the appearance and function of conventional headwear.

[0024] FIG. 1 illustrates an example hat or headwear 100 in an open configuration while FIGS. 2 & 3 illustrate the example hat or headwear in a closed configuration. Headwear 100 includes a headband loop 110 and a crown 130 having an interior volume with an opening defined by the crown perimeter at sides 133, 134, 135 and 136. Crown 130 may enclose any of a variety of interior volumes suitable for containing high-volume, textured and / or delicate hairstyles. Crown 130 may similarly be provided in any of a variety of shapes suitable for containing and protecting high-volume, textured and / or delicate hairstyles. Possible shapes include but are not limited to domed, elongated, tapered, pleated, expandible and combinations of these.
[0025] Headband loop 110 is configured to encircle a wearer's head and has forward 111, rearward 113, right side 115 and left side 117 segments. Headband loop 110 may be configured such that its perimeter may be increased or decreased. For example, headband loop 110 may be formed from or otherwise include an elastomeric material allowing it to stretch around a wearer's head. In another example, headband loop 110 may include ends which couple together around a wearer's head by buckling, snapping or removably adhering such as with hook-and-loop fasteners.
[0026] Crown 130 is pivotably coupled or hinged to headband loop 110. Crown 130 may be configured to pivot about headband loop rearward segment 113 and / or detach or decouple from forward 111, left side 117 and right side 115 segments of headband loop 110 by way of a hinge system. The rearward arc of headband loop 110 along which crown 130 is coupled may represent less than half of the headband loop perimeter. In an example, the rearward arc of the headband loop along which the crown is coupled represents less than one quarter of the headband loop perimeter. In a further example, the rearward arc of the headband loop along which the crown is coupled represents about one fifth of the headband loop perimeter.
[0027] In an example, crown 130 is coupled with rearward segment 111 of headband loop 110 through a tab 137 which functions as a living hinge bending to allow pivoting of the crown relative to the headband loop. Tab 137 may be flexible. In an example, tab 137 is formed from or otherwise includes a fabric material. Tab 137 may be stitched to rearward segment 111 of headband loop 110. In another example, tab 137 is formed from or otherwise includes leather, a non-woven synthetic material or a silicon material sewn in or on crown 130. Tab 137 may encircle or partially loop around rearward segment 111 of headband loop 110 which provides an axis around which the tab rotates, allowing crown 130 to pivot.
[0028] Crown 130 may be coupled with headband loop 110 through any of a variety of additional or alternative means including but not limited to a reinforced stitched fold, a pivot pin or riveted hinge, a molded polymer hinge, a multi-axis or dual-axis hinge, a flexible articulated joint and combinations of these. Hinges may be coupled with a crown provided as a helmet or a rigid base. Further, crown 130 may be coupled with headband loop 110 slightly off-center. Coupling means may be detachable from headband loop 110 to allow crown 130 to be completely removed therefrom.
[0029] Crown 130 may be formed from any of a variety of materials suitable for receiving and enclosing hair without snagging, static or friction. Example materials include but are not limited to textiles, coated fabrics, molded polymers composite materials or layered constructions. In a further example, crown 130 is formed from a cotton or cotton-linen basket weave with a durable water-repellant coating. Further, crown 130 may be assembled from or otherwise include panels, pleats, gussets or elastic regions.
[0030] Referring to FIGS. 1 & 2, crown 130 may further include an exterior shell 131 formed from a first material and an interior liner 132 formed from a second material. In an example, exterior shell 131 is formed from or otherwise includes a water-resistant material. In an example, interior liner 132, bound by the crown perimeter, is formed from or otherwise includes a low-friction material to reduce snagging and static. Suitable materials for interior liner 132 include but are not limited to satin, silk, rayon, microfiber and combinations of these. Interior liner 132 may be coated with anti-static coatings and / or low-friction polymer films. Interior liner 132 may be removable from exterior shell 131 or vice-versa.
[0031] Headwear 100 may further include a first fastener 121 coupled to, embedded in or otherwise provided to headband loop 110 and, configured for coupling with the first fastener, a second fastener 123 coupled to, embedded in or otherwise provided to crown 130 remote from tab 137 or the hinge axis between the crown and the headband loop. First and second fasteners 121 and 123 (hidden lines of FIGS. 1 & 2) are configured for selectively and cooperatively securing crown 130 against decoupling from forward segment 111 of headband loop 110 and against pivoting relative to the headband loop.
[0032] First fastener 121 may be provided to headband loop forward segment 111. Second fastener 123 may be provided to forward portion 133 of the perimeter of crown 130. Fasteners 121 and 123 may include any of a variety of mechanisms configured to selectively couple to one another including but not limited to magnets, snaps, hook-and-loop fasteners, buttons, buckles and combinations of these. More than two fasteners may be provided in pairs to reinforce selective coupling. For example, third and fourth fasteners may be provided to headband loop left side segment 117 and left side 136 of the perimeter of the crown 130, respectively, while fifth and sixth fasteners are provided to headband loop right side segment 115 and right side 135 of the perimeter of the crown, respectively. In an alternative, overlapping portions of crown 130 and headband loop 110 may provide a friction fit.
[0033] Headwear 100 may further include a brim 150 extending from headband loop 110. Brim 150 may be a full brim, a partial brim, a visor-style brim, may be flexible or rigid or may be removable. Referring to FIGS. 1-3, brim 150 projects from headband loop 110 along only a forward portion 111 of the headband loop perimeter. Brim 150 may extend around crown 130 and / or headband loop 110 along an arc having any of a variety of degree measurements suitable for the particular style or functionality of the headwear. For example, headwear for use in sunny settings may include a brim which extends a relatively long arc while headwear for use in windy settings may include a brim which extends a relatively short arc. In an example, the brim extends along an arc of about 150 degrees. In another example, the brim extends along an arc of about 130 degrees.
[0034] Brim 150 may extend away from crown 130 and / or headband loop 110 to any width or distance suitable for the particular style or functionality of the headwear. For example, headwear for use in sunny settings may include a brim which extends a relatively large distance while headwear for use in windy settings may include a brim which extends a relatively short distance. In an example, the brim has a width equal to the diameter or width of the crown. In another example, the brim has a width equal to half the diameter or width of the crown.
[0035] Brim 150 may be provided with a flange or forehead riser 151 to add vertical support to headwear 100 and / or facilitate coupling with crown 130. In addition to or as an alternative to a fastener being provided to headband loop 110, a fastener may be provided to flange 151 of brim 150 in position to align with the corresponding fastener on crown 130.
[0036] Referring to FIGS. 1 & 3, headwear 100 may further include a tether system or retention system 170 wrapping around forward portion 133 and side portions 135, 136 of crown 130 and extending to first and second tails 173 and 175. First and second tails 173 and 175 are configured for coupling together to tighten retention system 170 around a wearer's head. In an example, retention system 170 is a sash formed from a lightweight or medium-weight fabric and first and second tails 173 and 175 are configured for tying together at a rearward portion 113 of the headband loop perimeter. As a sash, retention system 170 may take any of a variety of forms including but not limited to wide ribbon, grosgrain, webbing and combinations of these.
[0037] In another example, first and second tails 173 and 175 mount cooperative resilient, snap clip buckles configured for locking together at a rearward portion 113 of the headband loop perimeter. Retention system 170 may be attached to crown 130 by any of a variety of methods including but not limited to adhering, stitching and combinations of these. Retention system 170 may alternatively take a form with straps, buckles, sliders, elastic regions, drawstrings, adjustable closures and / or integrated helmet straps.

Headwear 200 includes many of the features of headwear 100 in a different style. Unlike the depiction of brim 150, brim 250 projects from headband loop 210 completely around the headband loop perimeter.

In an example, the brim has a width equal to the radius of the crown.
[0049] Brim 250 may be provided with a flange or forehead riser 251 to add vertical support to headwear 200 and / or facilitate coupling with crown 230. In addition to or as an alternative to a fastener being provided to headband loop 210, a fastener may be provided to flange 251 of brim 250 in position to align with the corresponding fastener on crown 230.
[0050] Headwear 200 may further include a tether system or retention system 270 wrapping around forward portion 233 and side portions 235, 236 of crown 230 and extending to first and second tails 273 and 275. First and second tails 273 and 275 are configured for coupling together to tighten retention system 270 around a wearer's head. In an example, retention system 270 is a sash formed from a lightweight or medium-weight fabric and first and second tails 273 and 275 are configured for tying together at a rearward portion 213 of the headband loop perimeter. As a sash, retention system 270 may take any of a variety of forms including but not limited to wide ribbon, grosgrain, webbing and combinations of these.

[0053] In an example method, with a crown separated from forward, left side and right side segments of a head band loop, encircling a wearer's head with the headband loop (FIG. 6) and pulling the headband loop down over ears and neck of the wearer (FIG. 7). In this position, a brim of the headwear may be under the face and / or chin of the wearer.
[0054] The hair is pulled out from under the headband loop and the headband loop is placed back around the wearer's head above the ears. The hair is then loaded into the crown (FIG. 8) and the crown is pivoted towards contact with the forward, left side and right side segments of the headband loop (FIG. 9). The crown may be pivoted about a rearward segment of the headband loop.
[0055] The crown is fastened to the headband loop at the forward segment of the headband loop (FIG. 10), for example, by engaging first and second fastener elements. Ends of a sash which wraps a front portion and side portions of the crown are fastened (FIG. 11) to secure all portions of the headwear in the closed state on the head of the wearer.
[0056] In the closed state, the hair is maintained completely off the nape of the neck, improving airflow, thermal comfort, and wearability in warm environments. This configuration further enables the wearer to engage in activities such as lounging near or wading into a pool or other body of water. As the hair remains fully enclosed and isolated within the crown of the headwear, splashes, steam, or mist will not wet the hair.
[0057] Embodiments of the disclosure are susceptible to being used for various purposes, including, though not limited to, enabling users to contain and protect hair from sun, wind and / or moisture without having to forcefully tuck, push, trap, twist, or stuff hair upward through a fixed headband, narrow opening, or small rear aperture.

Claims
1. Headwear, comprising:a headband loop configured to encircle a wearer's head and including forward, rearward, left side and right side segments; anda crown pivotably coupled to the headband loop.
2. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, wherein the headband loop is configured for perimeter adjustment.
3. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, wherein the crown is configured to pivot about the headband loop rearward segment.
4. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, wherein the crown further comprises a tab coupled to the headband loop rearward segment.
5. The headwear as set forth in claim 4, wherein the tab is flexible.
6. The headwear as set forth in claim 4, further comprising a first fastener provided to the headband loop and, configured for coupling with the first fastener, a second fastener provided to the crown remote from the tab.
7. The headwear as set forth in claim 6, wherein the first fastener is provided to the headband loop forward segment.
8. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, wherein the crown is decoupled from the forward, left side and right side segments of the headband loop.
9. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, wherein the crown further comprises an exterior shell and an interior liner.
10. The headwear as set forth in claim 9, wherein the exterior shell further comprises a water-resistant material.
11. The headwear as set forth in claim 9, wherein the interior liner further comprises a low-friction material.
12. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a fastener provided to each of the crown and the headband loop for selectively and cooperatively securing the crown against pivoting relative to the headband loop.
13. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a brim extending from the forward segment of the headband loop.
14. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a brim extending from the forward, rearward, left side and right side segments of the headband loop.
15. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a brim attached to the forward segment of the headband loop by a flange.
16. The headwear as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a sash extending around a forward portion and side portions of the crown to first and second tails.
17. A hat, comprising:a headband loop configured to encircle a wearer's head and including forward, rearward, left side and right side segments; anda crown coupled with the rearward segment of the headband loop by a tab.
18. The hat as set forth in claim 17, further comprising a fastener provided to each of the crown and the headband loop for selectively and cooperatively securing the crown against decoupling from the forward segment of the headband loop.
19. The hat as set forth in claim 17, further comprising a sash extending around a forward portion and side portions of the crown to first and second tails.
20. The hat as set forth in claim 17, wherein the crown is configured to decouple from the forward, left side and right side segments of the headband loop.
