[0007] 7
[0008] 8 DESCRIPTION
[0009] 9 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 0 1 . Field of the Invention 1 This invention relates to a swing guide device that is used to help2 guide and teach proper swinging form for many sports such as baseball,3 softball, golf, cricket, lacrosse, or any other sport that involves swinging an4 object. Additionally, swing guide device is used to help guide and teach 5 proper throwing form for many sports such as baseball, softball, golf,6 cricket, lacrosse, or any other sport that involves throwing an object. 7 Specifically, this invention is a pole or rigid oblong member that is reversibly8 rigidly attachable to a baseball helmet or a softball helmet wherein the pole9 or rigid oblong member is attached and held in a very specific orientation0 relative to the helmet so that the pole or rigid oblong member guides a bat1 during a bat swing and causes the bat to swing exactly in the “swing plane”. 2 The swing plane is the plane which intersects the exact angle of trajectory of3 a baseball passing over home plate. The swing plane is coincident with the 1 trajectory of the baseball thrown by the pitcher. The pole or rigid oblong
[0010] 2 member functions as a guide for the bat to literally keep the bat on track
[0011] 3 and in the proper swing plane in order to teach the batter proper swinging
[0012] 4 technique and instill this proper technique into the muscle memory of the
[0013] 5 batter, thereby making it second nature for the batter.
[0014] 6 2. Description of Related Art
[0015] 7 There are other swing guide devices in the prior art, however, there
[0016] 8 are none that incorporate a pole or rigid oblong member that is reversibly
[0017] 9 rigidly attachable to a baseball helmet or softball helmet that guides the bat0 during a bat swing to cause the bat to swing in an exact plane that coincides 1 with the swing plane or trajectory of a baseball as shown and described2 below. Additionally, there are no other swing guide devices in the prior art3 that reversibly rigidly attachable to a baseball helmet or softball helmet as4 shown and described below. 5 6 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS 7 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a left-handed batter with swing guide8 device reversibly rigidly attached to a helmet, just prior to starting a swing at9 a baseball. 0 Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a left-handed batter with swing guide1 device reversibly rigidly attached to a helmet at the start of a swing. 2 Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a left-handed batter with swing guide3 device reversibly rigidly attached to a helmet, continuing on with the swing, 1 depicting how the swing guide device guides the bat into the proper swing

Swing guide 5 1 device is reversibly rigidly attachable to a baseball helmet or softball helmet
[0074] 2 1 00 with straps 20,40 and connectors 30,40,50 that reversibly attach to ear
[0075] 3 holes 1 04,1 06 and an upper vent hole 1 02 on the baseball helmet or softball
[0076] 4 helmet 1 00. The baseball helmet or softball helmet 1 00 is not a part of this
[0077] 5 invention.
[0078] 6 Base member 1 0 comprises: a pedestal 1 1 ; a pedestal pad 1 2; a socket
[0079] 7 1 3; a strap tunnel 14; a first slot 1 5; a second slot 1 6; a third slot 1 7; and a
[0080] 8 fourth slot 1 8.
[0081] 9 Pedestal 1 1 is a rigid planar member with a length, a width, a 0 thickness, a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, a fourth edge, an outer 1 surface, an inner service, a horizontal axis, and a vertical axis. The 2 horizontal axis of pedestal 1 1 is coincident with the plane of the rigid planar3 member. 4 Pedestal pad 1 2 is a resilient planar member with an outer surface and 5 an inner surface. The outer surface of pedestal pad 1 2 is rigidly attached to6 the inner surface of pedestal 1 1 . Pedestal pad 1 2 functions as a cushion 7 between the base member 10 and the baseball or softball helmet 100 which8 improves traction and provides shock absorption between these members. 9 Socket 1 3 is a rigid hollow cylindrical member with an inner diameter,0 an outer diameter, an inner surface, an outer surface, a length, a side, a first1 end, a second end, and a longitudinal axis. The first end of socket 1 3 is2 closed. The second end of socket 1 3 is open. The first end of socket 1 3 is3 rigidly attached to the outer surface of the pedestal 1 1 so that the 1 longitudinal axis of socket 1 3 is perpendicular to the plane of the pedestal
[0082] 2 1 1 . Rigid attachment may be accomplished by any know means. In best
[0083] 3 mode, socket 1 3 is integral with pedestal 1 1 and constructed from the same
[0084] 4 piece of material. The inner diameter of socket 1 3 is sized to make a friction
[0085] 5 fit with the outer diameter of the pole or rigid oblong member 80 and the
[0086] 6 outer diameter of adjustable hinge member 90. Socket 1 3 functions to
[0087] 7 engage with pole or rigid oblong member 80 or adjustable hinge member 90
[0088] 8 to rigidly attach the pole or rigid oblong member 80 or adjustable hinge
[0089] 9 member 90 to the socket 1 3. The second end of socket 1 3 receives the first0 end of pole or rigid oblong member 80, or alternately, the first end of the 1 segment 81 of pole or rigid oblong member 80 to rigidly attach these two2 members together. Still alternately, the second end of socket 1 3 receives3 the first end of adjustable hinge member 90 to rigidly attach these two4 members together. In best mode, the first end of the first segment 81 or 5 first end of pole or rigid oblong member 80 is permanently glued, epoxied,6 or welded within the second end of socket 1 3; or alternately, the first end of 7 adjustable hinge member 90 is permanently glued, epoxied, or welded8 within the second end of socket 1 3. 9 Strap tunnel 14 is a clearance passage, shaft, or tunnel in between the0 first end of socket 1 3 and the outer surface of pedestal 1 1 . Socket 1 3 is1 rigidly attached to the outer surface of the pedestal 1 1 so that socket 1 3 is2 raised above or held above the outer surface of pedestal 1 1 to yield 3 clearance for the horizontal strap 40 to pass between the first end of socket 1 1 3 and the outer surface of pedestal 1 1 . Thus, socket 1 3 is connected to
[0090] 2 pedestal 1 1 with clearance therebetween to create socket 1 3 as depicted. In
[0091] 3 best mode, socket 1 3 is attached to the outer surface of the pedestal 1 1 with
[0092] 4 four gussets 1 9. Each gusset 19 is a rigid planar triangular-shaped member.
[0093] 5 The four gussets 19 are equally spaced around the outer diameter of socket
[0094] 6 1 3 as depicted in order to firmly and rigidly connect socket 1 3 to base
[0095] 7 member 10 with strap tunnel 14 running between socket 1 3 and base
[0096] 8 member 10. In best mode, pedestal 1 1 , socket 1 3, and gussets 1 9 are
[0097] 9 integral and constructed from the same piece of material. Strap tunnel 140 tunnel has a width, a length, height, and longitudinal axis. The longitudinal 1 axis of strap tunnel 14 is parallel with the horizontal axis of the pedestal 1 1 . 2 The width of strap tunnel 14 is greater than the width of horizontal strap 40. 3 The length of strap tunnel 14 is greater than the outer diameter of socket4 1 3. The height of strap tunnel 14 is greater than the thickness of horizontal 5 strap 40. Strap tunnel 14 functions to engage with and receive horizontal6 strap 40 which passes through the strap tunnel 14 as depicted. Strap tunnel 7 14 and horizontal strap 40 help hold the pedestal 1 1 firmly onto the 8 baseball or softball helmetl 00. 9 First slot 1 5 is an aperture, slit, slot, or elongated opening in pedestal0 1 1 . First slot 1 5 has a width, length, an outer surface, an inner surface, and1 longitudinal axis. First slot 1 5 is located adjacent to the first edge of 2 pedestal 1 1 with its longitudinal axis parallel with the first edge of pedestal3 1 1 . The width of first slot 1 5 is slightly greater than the thickness of 1 horizontal strap 40. The length of first slot 1 5 is slightly greater than the
[0098] 2 width of horizontal strap 40. First slot 1 5 functions to engage with and
[0099] 3 receive horizontal strap 40 which passes through the first slot 1 5 as
[0100] 4 depicted. Horizontal strap 40 passes through the first and third slots 1 5,1 7
[0101] 5 in both the left-handed batter configuration and the right-handed batter
[0102] 6 configuration.
[0103] 7 Second slot 16 is an aperture, slit, slot, or elongated opening in the
[0104] 8 pedestal 1 1 . Second slot 16 has a width, length, an outer surface, an inner
[0105] 9 surface, and longitudinal axis. Second slot 16 is located adjacent to the0 second edge of pedestal 1 1 with its longitudinal axis parallel with the second 1 edge of pedestal 1 1 . The width of second slot 16 is slightly greater than the2 thickness of vertical strap 20. The length of second slot 16 is slightly 3 greater than the width of vertical strap 20. Second slot 16 functions to4 engage with and receive vertical strap 20 which passes through the second 5 slot 16 as depicted. The vertical strap 20 passes through the second slot 166 in the right-handed batter configuration as depicted. The vertical strap 20 7 passes through the fourth slot 1 8 in the left-handed batter configuration.8 Thus, swing guide device may be configured for both left and right-handed9 batters. 0 Third slot 1 7 is an aperture, slit, slot, or elongated opening in the1 pedestal 1 1 . Third slot 1 7 has a width, length, an outer surface, an inner2 surface, and longitudinal axis. Third slot 1 7 is located adjacent to the third3 edge of pedestal 1 1 with its longitudinal axis parallel with the third edge of 1 pedestal 1 1 . The width of third slot 1 7 is slightly greater than the thickness
[0106] 2 of horizontal strap 40. The length of third slot 1 7 is slightly greater than the
[0107] 3 width of horizontal strap 40. Third slot 1 7 functions to engage with and
[0108] 4 receive horizontal strap 40 which passes through the third slot 1 7 as
[0109] 5 depicted. Horizontal strap 40 passes through the first and third slots 1 5,1 7
[0110] 6 in both the left-handed batter configuration and the right-handed batter
[0111] 7 configuration.
[0112] 8 Fourth slot 18 is an aperture, slit, slot, or elongated opening in the
[0113] 9 pedestal 1 1 . Fourth slot 1 8 has a width, length, an outer surface, an inner0 surface, and longitudinal axis. Fourth slot 18 is located adjacent to the 1 fourth edge of pedestal 1 1 with its longitudinal axis parallel with the fourth2 edge of pedestal 1 1 . The width of fourth slot 1 8 is slightly greater than the3 thickness of vertical strap 20. The length of fourth slot 1 8 is slightly greater4 than the width of vertical strap 20. Fourth slot 1 8 functions to engage with 5 and receive vertical strap 20 which passes through the fourth slot 18 in the6 left-handed batter configuration as depicted. Thus, swing guide device may 7 be used for both left and right-handed batters. 8 Vertical strap 20 is a flexible band, belt, strap, or tape member. 9 Vertical strap 20 has a first end, a second end, a length, a width, a thickness,0 a longitudinal axis, and a latitudinal axis. Vertical strap 20 functions to1 connect the base member 10 to an upper vent hole 102 in the baseball or2 softball helmet 100. There is an upper vent hole 102 on most baseball or3 softball helmets 100. The first end of vertical strap 20 is attached to second 1 slot 16 for right-handed configuration and the fourth slot 1 8 for left-handed
[0114] 2 configuration. As discussed below, the second end of vertical strap 20 is
[0115] 3 attached to the upper connector 30 which is reversibly attachable to the
[0116] 4 upper vent hole 102 on a baseball or softball helmet 100.
[0117] 5 Upper connector 30 is a rigid U-shaped clip, catch, clasp, fastener, or
[0118] 6 hook. Upper connector 30 has an upper connector hook 32 which is a rigid
[0119] 7 hook-shaped member that hooks onto an upper vent hole 102 of a baseball
[0120] 8 or softball helmet 100. Upper connector 30 further comprises an upper
[0121] 9 connector strap slot 34. Upper connector strap slot 34 is an aperture, slit,0 slot, or elongated opening that is rigidly attached to upper connector hook 1 32. Upper connector strap slot 34 has a longitudinal axis that perpendicular2 to the plane of curvature of the hook on upper connector hook 32. Upper3 connector strap slot 34 functions as a permanent attachment point between4 the second end of vertical strap 20 and the upper connector hook 32 5 wherein the second end of vertical strap 20 is threaded through upper6 connector strap slot 34, looped around, and attached to itself to form a 7 permanent loop to permanently attach the upper connector 30 to the second8 end of vertical strap 20. In best mode permanent attachment is done by9 sewing as depicted. 0 The first end of vertical strap 20 is reversibly adjustably attachable to1 the second or fourth slot of base member 10. As stated, the second slot is2 used in the right-handed batter configuration and the fourth slot is used in3 the left-handed batter configuration. The first end of vertical strap 20 1 includes a means of reversible adjustable attachment to the second slot or
[0122] 2 fourth slot on base member 10. Any known means of reversible adjustable
[0123] 3 attachment may be used. In best mode, the first end of vertical strap 20 has
[0124] 4 a vertical strap hook and loop attachment area 22 to provide a means of
[0125] 5 reversible adjustable attachment to the second slot or fourth slot on base
[0126] 6 member 10 wherein the first end of vertical strap 20 is threaded through
[0127] 7 upper connector strap slot 34 and then looped back and attached to itself
[0128] 8 with the vertical strap hook and loop attachment area 22 to complete the
[0129] 9 reversible adjustable attachment. 0 Horizontal strap 40 is a flexible band, belt, strap, or tape member. 1 Horizontal strap 40 has a first end, a second end, a length, a width, a 2 thickness, a longitudinal axis, and a latitudinal axis. Horizontal strap 403 functions to connect the base member 10 to a left ear hole 104 and a right4 ear hole 106 in the baseball or softball helmet 100. There is a left and right 5 ear hole 104,106 on most baseball or softball helmets 100. As discussed6 below, the first end of horizontal strap 40 is attached to the first connector 7 50 which is reversibly attachable to the left ear hole 104 on a baseball or8 softball helmet 100 and the second end of horizontal strap 40 is attached to9 the second connector 60 which is reversibly attachable to the right ear hole0 106 on a baseball or softball helmet 100. 1 First connector 50 is a rigid U-shaped clip, catch, clasp, fastener, or2 hook. First connector 50 has a first connector hook 52 which is a rigid3 hook-shaped member that hooks onto the left ear hole 104 of a baseball or 1 softball helmet 100 for a right-handed batter configuration or alternately
[0130] 2 hooks onto the right ear hole 106 of a baseball or softball helmet 100 for a
[0131] 3 left-handed batter configuration. In best mode, first connector hook 52 is a
[0132] 4 rigid hook-shaped member with an ear member or flange member at the
[0133] 5 end of the hook. Ear member or flange member is a rigid tab that projects
[0134] 6 outward in the opposite direction of the curvature on the hook-shaped
[0135] 7 member as depicted. Ear member or flange member functions to help guide
[0136] 8 the hook-shaped member into the right or left ear hole 104,106 of the
[0137] 9 baseball or softball helmet 100. This rigid tab member allows the first0 connector hook 52 to more easily slide into right or left ear hole 104,106 1 and then firmly hook itself onto the right or left ear hole 104,106. 2 First connector 50 further comprises: a first connector elongated base3 54 and a first connector strap slot 56. First connector elongated base 54 is4 a rigid rectangular planar member with a first end and a second end. The 5 first end of first connector elongated base 54 is rigidly attached to first6 connector hook 52. The second end of first connector elongated base 54 is 7 rigidly attached to first connector strap slot 56. First connector elongated8 base 54 functions to provide distance between first connector hook 52 and9 the first connector strap slot 56. This distance provides more leverage on0 first connector hook 52 and allows for a more rigid and sturdy attachment1 between first connector hook 52 and ear holes 104,106. First connector2 elongated base 54 allows vertical strap 20 to pull first connector 50 more3 firmly against the baseball helmet or softball helmet 100. 1 First connector strap slot 56 is an aperture, slit, slot, or elongated
[0138] 2 opening in first connector elongated base 54. First connector strap slot 56
[0139] 3 has a longitudinal axis that perpendicular to the plane of curvature of the
[0140] 4 hook-shaped member on first connector hook 52. First connector strap slot
[0141] 5 56 slot functions as an adjustable attachment point between the first end of
[0142] 6 horizontal strap 40 and the first connector 50. Any known means of
[0143] 7 reversible adjustable attachment may be used. In best mode, the first end of
[0144] 8 horizontal strap 40 has a horizontal strap hook and loop attachment area 42

Next, the vertical strap 20 is tightened to 5 apply tension between the base member 10 and an upper vent hole 102 of6 the baseball or softball helmet 100. The vertical strap 20 is tightened by 7 detaching the first end of vertical strap 20 and then pulling the vertical strap8 20 tight and then reattaching the first end of the vertical strap 20 into the9 secure position. Next the horizontal strap 40 is tightened to create tension0 on the horizontal strap 40 which firmly holds the base member 10 against1 the outer surface of the baseball or softball helmet 100. The horizontal2 strap 40 is tightened by detaching the first end of horizontal strap 40 and3 then pulling the horizontal strap 40 tight and then reattaching the first end 1 of the horizontal strap 40 into the secure position. With the vertical and
[0218] 2 horizontal straps 20,40 pulled tight and attached, the swing guide device 5
[0219] 3 is sturdily and rigidly attached to the baseball or softball helmet 100. Now
[0220] 4 the swing guide device 5 may be used to guide and keep the bat 1 10 in the
[0221] 5 proper swing plane. In may take some time and repeated adjustment of the
[0222] 6 base member 10 in order to find the exact proper positioning of the base
[0223] 7 member 10 on the helmet 100 to yield proper swing plane guidance of the
[0224] 8 swing guide device 5. The base member 10 is adjusted by first loosening
[0225] 9 the horizontal and vertical straps 20,40 and then moving the base member0 10 into the desired location and then re-tightening the horizontal and 1 vertical straps 20,40. 2 3
