[0036] The following describes the embodiments of the present application in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. The following describes the present application in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and the examples are only used to explain the present application.
[0037] Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of a PON system structure, as provided by related art. Figure 1 (a) illustrates a PtMP PON system, a common architecture for home access networks. Figures 1 (b) and (c) illustrate the uplink and downlink signal transmission within this structure.
[0038] In the downstream direction, as specified by standards such as ITU-T G.9804.2, the optical line terminal (OLT) encapsulates user data into a specific physical frame format. This frame is then sent to the optical distribution network (ODN) via an optical module. After various attenuation and transmission losses, the optical signal transmitted by the OLT becomes extremely weak and is ultimately received by all optical network units (ONUs) connected to the ODN. In a PON system, equivalent delay compensation technology ensures the same transmission delay from each ONU to the OLT. Uplink bandwidth allocation also strictly controls the time slots for each ONU's uplink burst signal transmission, thereby avoiding uplink signal transmission conflicts.
[0039] In addition, both downlink broadcast transmission and uplink burst transmission use forward error correction (FEC) technology to improve the fault tolerance of the optical channel, allowing optical fiber communication using 3-intensity modulation direct detection (IM / DD) to achieve a transmission rate of 50Gbps.
[0040] However, due to the different geographical locations of each ONU, the fiber length, splitter level, and splitting ratio are all different. The same optical signal reaches each ONU with different dispersion penalty, optical power, and jitter. As a result, the quality of the signal transmitted by the OLT received by each ONU varies greatly.
[0041] To meet the service quality requirements of the receiving end, the ITU-T standard defines strict specifications, ensuring that even the longest-distance ONU with the highest optical path loss (OPL) can accurately receive the same service data as the ONU with the lowest OPL. PON systems utilize a fixed downstream rate on a single wavelength, multiple upstream wavelength options, multiple upstream rates, and the same FEC code type for downstream transmission.
[0042] However, according to the central limit theorem and actual engineering measurement data, the number of ONUs in a PON system that are in the worst-case scenario is relatively small. Therefore, setting standards based on the worst-case scenario across the entire network will inevitably lead to a significant waste of overall network resources and a sharp increase in costs. Therefore, rationally optimizing and deploying overall network resources, reducing energy consumption and costs, and maximizing the output-to-investment ratio will become the focus and direction of future PON system research for operators and equipment manufacturers.
[0043] This application also aims to address the problems of low transmission efficiency, high power consumption, and high cost in traditional networks. It discloses a PON system with a PtMP structure, single-wavelength communication, and flexible configuration. The flexibly configurable PON system disclosed in this application can flexibly change the configuration of each ONU based on the channel conditions between the ONU and the OLT and user service needs, including the modulation method, line rate, and FEC code type to improve network transmission quality. For example, changing the line coding to increase the data transmission rate, reducing the overhead of forward error correction coding to increase service data throughput, or enhancing the error correction performance of FEC to improve signal transmission on degraded channels to ensure service quality. By flexibly configuring network equipment (OLT, ONU), operators and users are provided with a network system with higher transmission efficiency and lower overall cost.

[0094] Below, some implementation methods are provided to illustrate the communication method provided in the embodiments of the present application. Figure 4 is a structural block diagram of a PON system provided in the embodiments of the present application. In this embodiment, the first communication device is an ONU, the second communication device is an OLT, and the PON system includes N ONUs. As shown in Figure 4, the PON system includes a downstream direction (as shown in Figure (a) in Figure 4) and a downstream direction (as shown in Figure (b) in Figure 4).
[0095] The embodiments of this application can be divided into four parts:
[0096] 1) Uplink and downlink data frame structure; 2) Uplink and downlink signal transmission and reception process; 3) Flexible PON configuration and interaction process; 4) Interaction messages for flexible PON system configuration; As shown in Figure 4, the OLT and ONU devices can be divided into PON-Media Access Control (MAC) and optical modules. The uplink and downlink data frame structure configures the MAC layer in the OLT and ONU devices; the uplink and downlink signal transmission and reception process systematically describes the information transmission and reception process of the entire flexible PON system; the configuration and interaction process of flexible PON explains the method for flexibly configuring the entire PON system. This section also involves the content of the flexibly configurable devices in the entire PON system, such as MAC and optical modules; the interaction messages for flexible PON system configuration provide interaction message examples.
[0097] 1. Uplink and downlink data frame structure
[0098] In home access network (PON) systems, upstream and downstream data frames each have a single data frame structure. For example, in the G.9804.2 Common Transmission Convergence (ComTC) standard, the physical frame with a nominal line rate of 49.7664 Gbit / s uses non-return-to-zero (NRZ) line coding. This is followed by low-density parity check (LDPC) encoding, resulting in a bit stream consisting of 360 LDPC (17280, 14592) codewords with a frame period of 125 µs.
[0099] In the flexible PON system proposed in the embodiments of this application, four different types of downlink data frame structures can be applied. In the downlink direction, not only can each type of data frame structure be applied independently, but two or more types can also be used in combination. Figure 5 is a schematic diagram of a data frame structure that can be used in the downlink direction, as provided in this application. As shown in Figure 5, the embodiments of this application can use four different data frame structures for simultaneous application.
[0100] For examples of the four different types of downlink data frame structures shown in FIG5 , please refer to FIG6 to FIG10 .
[0101] Figure 6 is a schematic diagram of a first-category downlink data frame structure provided by an embodiment of the present application. As shown in Figure 6, the downlink FS frame uses the same line coding scheme, such as 4-pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), NRZ, or dual polarization-quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK). Furthermore, the same modulation scheme also uses the same FEC coding, with the same coding type and code length, such as LDPC (17280, 14592).
[0102] In the first type of data frame structure, during the FEC encoding process, the downstream physical synchronization block (PSBd) and the first small portion of the FS frame data together constitute the information bits of the first FEC codeword. Assuming the information bit length of this FEC codeword is a fixed value of L bits and the PSBd length is M bits, the first (LM) bits of the FS frame participate in the encoding calculation of the first FEC codeword. At a given downlink rate, the bit length of each physical frame is fixed. However, the length of the FS header and FS payload varies during FS framing, resulting in slightly different lengths for each FS frame. That is, after encoding (S-1) FEC codewords in each FS frame, the number of remaining K bits varies (K≤L). Therefore, the information bits of the last FEC codeword need to be padded with zeros, resulting in a length of (LK) bits.
[0103] Figure 7 is a schematic diagram of another downlink first-category data frame structure provided by an embodiment of the present application. The data frame structure shown in Figure 6 refers to the frame structure of the G.9804.2 standard. G.9804.2 can only use NRZ line coding and LDPC (17280, 14592) FEC coding, but the present embodiment can apply other line coding and other FEC codeword lengths or codeword types.
[0104] As shown in FIG7 , the first type of data frame structure is expanded to provide a schematic diagram of a mixed downlink data frame structure in which PAM4 and NRZ line coding coexist, and each line coding uses a different LDPC FEC codeword length (or FEC codeword type). That is, the first type of data frame structure in the embodiment of the present application can also simultaneously include downlink data frames with different line coding and different FEC codes. FIG8 is a schematic diagram of a second type of data frame structure in the downlink direction provided by an embodiment of the present application. As shown in FIG8 , the second type of data frame structure adopts the same type of line coding (such as PAM4 or NRZ) but uses two or more mixed FEC codes. This type of data frame is used in scenarios where the OLT uses different downlink FEC codes for different ONUs to improve service transmission quality and mix them into frames. For example, some ONUs have low optical path loss and can transmit signals at higher throughput, while other ONUs have high optical path loss and require further improvement in FEC error correction capabilities for communication. In this case, it is necessary to use FEC codewords with different forward error correction performance to encode and mix the downlink data of different ONU types for downlink broadcast.
[0105] FIG9 is a schematic diagram of a third type of data frame structure for the downlink direction provided by an embodiment of the present application, and FIG10 is a schematic diagram of a fourth type of data frame structure for the downlink direction provided by an embodiment of the present application. The first type of data frame structure and the second type of data frame structure both use the same line coding; whereas the third type of data frame structure and the fourth type of data frame structure can simultaneously contain data blocks with different line codings, such as NRZ and PAM4, in the same downlink physical data frame; in these two types of downlink data frame structures, it is necessary to group the SDUs (session data units) of different ONUs during or before FS framing, so that the SDUs of ONUs with the same type of line coding are grouped together to form similar SDUs, and then FS framing is performed; when different SDUs are mixed into FS frames, they need to be distinguishable from each other so that after the OLT uses the same or different FEC code types to encode them separately, as shown in FIG9 and FIG10, each ONU can still receive and decode them normally.
[0106] FIG11 is a framing flow chart of a downlink FS mixed frame provided by an embodiment of the present application. As shown in FIG11 , the third type of data frame structure, the fourth type of data frame structure, and the framing process of the downlink FS mixed frame are shown.
[0107] Since the downlink data requested by each ONU can be considered to arrive randomly at the OLT, compared to traditional methods, to group SDUs for different ONU types, an SDU buffer must be established at the OLT. SDUs from all ONUs with the same FEC must be grouped together based on the FEC code type configured by the OLT for each ONU. The OLT should avoid grouping only a small number of SDUs (to avoid sending idle data for extended periods). If this occurs, the buffer time can be increased or the ONU's FEC configuration can be modified. Furthermore, during the 10Gigabit-PON Encapsulation Mode (XGEM) and FS framing process, the same type of SDUs must be further segmented, marked with segmentation markers, zero-padded, and sorted based on the FEC codeword length of the reference group. This ensures that the OLT consistently encodes SDUs of the same type during FEC encoding and that the ONUs consistently decode them during FEC decoding.
[0108] In the uplink direction, since each ONU sends a burst signal independently, the uplink direction should adopt a frame structure similar to the first-class data frame in the downlink direction. Since the length of each burst is allocated bandwidth by the BWmap of the OLT, the length of the uplink burst signal is related to the ONU traffic volume, and the burst signal length is very flexible. Figure 12 is a schematic diagram of a data frame structure that can be used in the uplink direction provided by an embodiment of the present application. As shown in Figure 12, the corresponding first-class data frame in the uplink direction also needs to introduce the FS burst in the G.9804.2ComTC standard for construction. Figure 13 is a schematic diagram of a first-class data frame structure in the uplink direction provided by an embodiment of the present application, and Figure 14 is a schematic diagram of another first-class data frame structure in the uplink direction provided by an embodiment of the present application. As shown in Figures 13 and 14, two possible examples are shown. The difference between the two is that for different line coding, such as NRZ and PAM4, the same FEC code type and different FEC code types are used for encoding, respectively.
[0109] 2. Uplink and Downlink Signal Transmission and Reception Process
[0110] In a flexible PON system, the upstream and downstream data transmission and reception processes differ from those of a traditional PON system due to the more flexible frame structure. Figure 15 is a flowchart of a downstream OLT signal transmission according to an embodiment of the present application; Figure 16 is a flowchart of a downstream ONU signal reception according to an embodiment of the present application.
[0111] In the downstream direction, the Service Data Unit (SDU) arriving at the OLT is processed according to the ONU's existing configuration. For example, data is cached or grouped according to certain rules, grouping SDUs corresponding to ONUs with the same attributes together. This facilitates subsequent attribute indication in the frame structure and the generation of FS data frames. Attributes include line coding, FEC coding, and transmission rate. The FS data frame passes through the FEC encoding module to form the downstream physical frame structure. The physical frame structure data is then sent to the modulation module for further signal processing. Finally, the laser sends it to the ODN for optical signal transmission.
[0112] At the ONU's receiving end, the signal segmentation module first segments the optical signal based on its characteristics and sends optical signals with similar characteristics to the corresponding demodulation module for demodulation. After demodulation, the decoding module decodes the data according to the frame structure indicated in the downlink physical data frame and performs subsequent information processing. In this example, if the demodulation or decoding process fails, the input data can be discarded and reprocessed with new input data.
[0113] Figure 17 is a flowchart of ONU signal transmission in the upstream direction provided by an embodiment of the present application; Figure 18 is a flowchart of OLT signal reception in the downstream direction provided by an embodiment of the present application.
[0114] In the upstream direction, the ONU's data transmission process is similar to that of the OLT. However, since the upstream transmission is in burst mode, uploading information specific to the ONU, the ONU first determines the data to be sent based on the bandwidth allocated by the OLT in the DBA. It then generates burst uplink physical frames and transmits optical signals according to the specific transmission configuration configured by the OLT. This specific transmission configuration includes at least one of the following: uplink line coding, modulation and demodulation method, FEC coding, uplink rate, transmission wavelength, etc. The burst frame generation process can refer to the operation of G.9804.2 standard NRZ line coding and LDPC (17280, 14592) forward error correction coding, and will not be detailed here. At the OLT's receiving end, the OLT selects a receiver that matches the uplink ONU's specific transmission configuration based on the DBA's bandwidth allocation. The receiver must meet the dedicated receive configuration requirements that match the ONU's specific transmission configuration and can correctly receive the information transmitted by the ONU. The specific receiving configuration requirement includes at least one of the following: line coding, demodulation mode, forward error correction decoding, uplink rate, receiving wavelength option, and receiving sub-wavelength option.
[0115] 3. Flexible PON Configuration and Interaction Process
[0116] For flexible PON systems, configuration can be performed during the activation and registration phase or in real time during normal operation. For configuration and interaction during the activation and registration phase, the following situations are considered separately:
[0117] 1) Each ONU has a basic transceiver state, which supports the most basic line coding, such as NRZ, and can also use the default FEC for encoding and decoding; ONU activation cycle: O1-O9 state.
[0118] 2) Each ONU has only a specific transmit and receive state, and may support different line coding and FEC.
[0119] Figure 19 is a schematic diagram of a flexible configuration for the activation and registration phases provided by an embodiment of the present application; Figure 20 is a schematic diagram of another flexible configuration for the activation and registration phases provided by an embodiment of the present application. For scenario 1), the configuration diagram is shown in Figure 19; for scenario 2), the configuration diagram is shown in Figure 20.
[0120] As shown in FIG19 , during operation, the OLT periodically broadcasts a serial number grant (SN grant), and the broadcast content includes specific configuration content of each ONU. When an ONU accesses the PON system, it enters the O1 initial state and receives the OLT's general synchronization data PSync according to the specific configuration content of the ONU in order to obtain superframe synchronization in the downstream direction; after synchronization, it further obtains other data, such as protocol version, burst profile, etc.; then the ONU enters the O2-3 state and sends the Serial_Number_ONU PLOAM message to the OLT to inform the OLT that a new ONU has accessed the system, as well as the first message containing the ONU's own capabilities, such as the Capability_ONU message; then, the OLT discovers that a new ONU has accessed the system and sends it an Assign_ONU-ID to assign the ONU's ONU-ID. In addition, it will also send a second message (for example, the Burst_Profile PLOAM message) to configure the ONU according to certain criteria. The criteria can be either rules set manually by the local end or the output results of the system's automatic judgment. At this stage, the OLT can also send a Ranging The ONU performs ranging and other operations. After receiving the ONU-ID and configuration information, the ONU can configure itself in various ways, such as modulation mode, line coding, FEC encoding and decoding, and switching clock frequency. In addition, the ONU in the O4 state must send a Registration PLOAM message to the OLT to register. After receiving the ONU's registration message, the OLT can further authenticate and calculate the equivalent time delay (EqD) between the OLT and the ONU based on the Registration_ID. After the calculation is complete, it notifies the ONU by sending a Ranging_Time PLOAM message. Finally, the ONU obtains the EqD, completes the activation and registration process, and enters the O5 working phase. During the transmission phase of its upstream physical frame, it adjusts the start time of its upstream frame based on the EqD.
[0121] As shown in Figure 20, during operation, the OLT periodically broadcasts serial number authorization. Unlike Figure 19, the broadcast content includes dedicated configuration content for multiple types of ONUs so that ONUs with different capabilities can obtain their own dedicated synchronization data and complete superframe synchronization. The ONU categories broadcast are subject to the types of ONUs accessing the operator's overall network. For each ONU accessing the PON system, each uses its own transceiver to receive and transmit signals. The process is similar to Figure 19 (the following operations 1-6 are descriptions of the corresponding parts of Figure 19), namely:
[0122] 1) When an ONU accesses the PON system, it enters the O1 initial state and receives the OLT's dedicated synchronization data PSync according to the ONU's dedicated configuration content in order to obtain superframe synchronization in the downstream direction; after synchronization, it further obtains other data, such as protocol version, burst profile, etc.; 2) Then the ONU enters the O2-3 state and sends the Serial_Number_ONU PLOAM message to the OLT to inform the OLT that a new ONU has accessed the system, as well as a first message containing the ONU's own capabilities, such as the Capability_ONU message; 3) Then, the OLT discovers that a new ONU has accessed the system and sends the Assign_ONU-ID to it to assign the ONU's ONU-ID. In addition, it will also send a second message (for example, the Burst_Profile PLOAM message) to configure the ONU according to certain criteria. The criteria can be either rules set manually by the local end or the output results of the system's automatic judgment. At this stage, the OLT can also send the Ranging grant to measure the distance of the ONU, etc.; 4) After the ONU receives the ONU-ID and configuration information, it can configure itself in various ways, such as modulation mode, line coding, FEC encoding and decoding, switching clock frequency, etc. In addition, the ONU in the O4 state must send a Registration PLOAM message to the OLT to register, etc.; 5) After receiving the registration message from the ONU, the OLT can further authenticate and calculate the equivalent delay EqD between the OLT and the ONU based on the Registration_ID. After the calculation is completed, it notifies the ONU by sending a Ranging_Time PLOAM message; 6) Finally, the ONU obtains the EqD, completes the activation and registration process, enters the O5 working phase, and adjusts the start time of its uplink frame according to the EqD during the transmission phase of its uplink physical frame.
[0123] Figure 21 is a schematic diagram of a flexible configuration in a working state provided by an embodiment of the present application. As shown in Figure 21, for real-time configuration and interaction in a working state.
[0124] 1) First, assume that at the SFC1 superframe, the OLT sends a second message (e.g., a Burst_Profile PLOAM message) to the ONU whose configuration needs to be updated. 2) Then, after receiving the configuration message, the ONU feeds back a configuration confirmation message (or no message), such as an Acknowledgement PLOAM message (Completion code = 0x01, etc.), and waits for the new ONU configuration to be completed. 3) Then, the ONU performs configuration updates based on the new Burst_Profile sent by the OLT, and after completion, feeds back a confirmation message, which can also be fed back via an Acknowledgement PLOAM message, and informs the OLT of the superframe information in which the configuration takes effect. 4) Finally, the OLT feeds back the configuration information based on the superframe information in which the configuration takes effect, such as the superframe number SFC. n , uses the new configuration to send downlink data at the agreed effective time, and the ONU also receives data at the corresponding time.
[0125] It is worth noting that:
[0126] 1) The effective time of the configuration agreement can be reported by the ONU or specified by the OLT, which is not limited in this application.
[0127] 2) The capability information of the ONU has been reported during the activation and registration phases. The capability information can also be reported during the working state of the ONU according to the requirements of the OLT, which is not limited in this application.
[0128] 3) The ONU configuration switching request can be initiated by either the OLT or the ONU, though this application does not specify this. Regardless of whether the request is initiated by the OLT or the ONU, the general process is as follows: First, the OLT obtains the ONU's capability information, which can be obtained during the activation registration phase or while the ONU is operating. Next, the OLT sends configuration information, such as a Burst_Profile PLOAM message. Next, the ONU receives the configuration message and either configures itself or instructs the OLT to change the device configuration, such as the FEC code type. Finally, a time is agreed upon for the configuration to take effect, and the OLT and ONU transmit information using the new configuration.
[0129] 4. Interactive Messages for Flexible PON System Configuration
[0130] The message definitions in the above configuration and interaction processes can be referred to in Tables 1 to 4 respectively.
[0131] Table 1. Uplink Capability_ONU PLOAM message
[0132] As shown in Table 1, this is an example of the newly defined Capability_ONU PLOAM message for the ONU to report its own capabilities. It illustrates the ONU's flexibly configurable modulation method (Modulation), line coding (Line code), and forward error correction coding (FEC) capabilities. Other configurable capabilities can also be further expanded in this message, which is not limited by this application.
[0133] Table 2 Downlink Burst_Profile PLOAM message configuration table
[0134] Table 2 shows an example of a revision to the ITU-T G.9804.2 standard Burst_Profile message. The delimiter length unit indicator (DD) in Octet 7 is moved to the corresponding position in Octet 6 - Burst Profile Control 2. Table 3 redefines each bit in Octet 7 of the original Burst_Profile message: AA specifies the ONU modulation mode; BB specifies the ONU line coding; CC specifies the ONU downstream forward error correction decoding pattern; and DD specifies the ONU upstream forward error correction coding pattern.
[0135] Table 3 Burst_Profile PLOAM message configuration table
[0136] As shown in Table 3, if the ONU has other capabilities that need to be flexibly configured, it can also be further expanded by newly defining the meaning of the Burst_Profile bit, which is not limited in this application.
[0137] Table 4 Uplink Acknowledgement PLOAM message configuration table
[0138] Table 4 defines a new feedback message for the contents of the Burst_Profile message received by the ONU. Similarly, Table 4 is an example of a revision to the ITU-T G.9804.2 standard for Acknowledgement PLOAM. If the ONU needs to provide additional information to the OLT during the flexible configuration process, this information can be further expanded by re-defining the meaning of specific bits in this message; this is not limited by this application.
[0139] For example, in Table 4, Octet 10 will feedback the category and cause of ONU configuration failure; Octet 11-12 will feedback the SFC superframe information in which the ONU configuration takes effect, for example, using the last 16 bits of the 51-bit complete superframe number as the superframe information in which the ONU configuration takes effect as agreed with the OLT.
