[0001] TITLE: CONVERTIBLE BACKPACK
[0002] Applicant: PINI, Edoardo; Via 1° Maggio 3, 22070 Binago (CO), ITALY Inventor: PINI, Edoardo (IT)
[0003] DESCRIPTION
[0004] TECHNICAL FIELD
[0005] The present invention refers to a convertible hiking backpack, capable of being modified according to a user's specific needs.
[0006] In general, the present invention finds application in the professional or amateur outdoor sports field, in the field of trekking or hiking as well as in the field of travel or in the field of transport of specialized equipment such as, for example, photographic equipment, medical equipment, first aid equipment or scientific material.
[0007] STATE OF THE PRIOR ART
[0008] A backpack is, in its simplest form, a fabric bag loaded onto a person's shoulders and secured with two bands, called shoulder straps, which go over the shoulders and under the armpits.
[0009] Depending on various transport needs, backpacks have been developed with different characteristics in terms of weight, volume, material used, additional components, etc. depending on the specific purpose of use of each backpack.
[0010] If outdoor hiking activities are taken into consideration, depending on the load capacity, backpacks can be divided into small backpacks, suitable for daily excursions, large backpacks, which can be used for trekking and finally those that are adopted for mountaineering or for military uses, even in the case of shipments to remote areas.
[0011] There are also small backpacks for trail running, therefore mountain running. Some backpacks are instead designed for the transport of specific components, such as photographic equipment. The use of a backrest with a specific shape, soft padding and breathable honeycomb fabric, called "airmesh", is known in these sectors.
[0012] The shoulder straps are generally also padded and with a shape suitable for prolonged use and they also use solutions to promote skin transpiration.
[0013] They can also include pockets on the front, for example to insert a phone, energy bars or small objects.
[0014] Furthermore, a connection strap can be provided between the shoulder straps, generally at the height of the user's chest, which maintains a correct mutual position between the shoulder straps.
[0015] Adjustment solutions are also often provided, usually represented by two types of straps: one in the lower part which allows one to lift the backpack towards the upper part of the back, and one in the upper part, which allows one to bring the backpack closer to the back or vice versa move it away. The further the backpack is from the back, the more the back breathes, but this leads to a greater sensation of unbalance given that there is a shift in the overall center of gravity. The closer the backpack is to the back, the more the back sweats due to improved portability and a more compact structure towards the overall center of gravity.
[0016] The fabrics generally used are synthetic fabrics made of polyethylene (PE) or polystyrene (PS) coated with polyurethane (PU), or Nylon, Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Polyester, Polyamide or the like to give a waterproof characteristic. It is also common to find internal filaments that make the fabric tear-proof.
[0017] Furthermore, backpacks for hiking can include a lumbar belt, generally adjustable, made similarly to shoulder straps, and designed to place the weight of the backpack on the iliac crest instead of on the shoulders.
[0018] The actual containment bag, generally formed starting from the backrest and made as a whole with it, has a capacity that is usually well defined and conventionally measured in litres, which is why we talk about "literage" when defining the size of a schoolbag.
[0019] The opening of the containment bag is usually located in the upper part.
[0020] This naturally makes it difficult to access objects that are at the bottom.
[0021] For this reason, some backpacks also have an opening in the lower part so as to access objects placed near the bottom of the backpack. In further cases, a front opening with a vertical zip may be provided, generally located at a central portion, to allow access to a limited front portion of the backpack, in addition to the main upper opening.
[0022] As for materials, the same solutions already defined in relation to the backrest and shoulder straps tend to be used, including waterproof and tear-proof characteristics.
[0023] Often, in the lower part of the bag there is a more resistant fabric than that used for the rest of the bag; this is because the part that touches the ground must ensure maximum resistance.
[0024] In the case of hiking backpacks, hooks or straps are often provided to allow one to attach other accessories such as ice axes, towels, hats, sleeping bags and, in general, mountain equipment. In this type of backpacks, generally, there is a single main central pocket in which to distribute the equipment as desired.
[0025] Of course, this is only practical if it is always necessary to empty and refill the backpack; however, it is not very convenient when one has to select one object only and with a given speed.
[0026] Side pockets generally used to carry, for example, water bottles can also be included.
[0027] Differently, in backpacks used for carrying specific equipment, such as photographic equipment, internal dividers or compartments are often used, always inside the single pocket.
[0028] Of course, despite the better spatial organization, the fact that the backpack is full or empty has a reduced impact on the overall size.
[0029] Therefore, alternative solutions were developed for different needs.
[0030] For example, solutions have been developed with a pocket that can be removed from the backrest with additional small bags to be attached to this main bag.
[0031] These products are suitable for a improved organization and selection of useful space but are still very much connected to the inconveniences of space management and weight distribution, with small additional pockets for small, carefully selected objects.
[0032] Conceptual solutions for daily use have been further developed with flexible shoulder straps with particular shapes to which containment elements can be attached.
[0033] These solution ideas are naturally only suitable for small transports of objects with very small dimensions and with a structure not suitable for medium-long j oumeys.
[0034] Patent applications FR 2 770 755 Al and WO 2014 / 077421 Al describe backpacks with several storage bags that can be combined on one backrest.
[0035] DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0036] The underlying object of the present invention is to devise a backpack capable of overcoming the aforementioned limitations of the prior art.
[0037] Object of the invention is also to obtain a backpack also suitable for prolonged use and convertible according to specific needs in terms of space and weight.
[0038] Another object of the present invention is to provide a backpack having a series of accessories to meet all the additional needs of users.
[0039] A further object is to provide a backpack suitable in terms of comfort and maintenance of the correct walking posture for the practice of outdoor hiking activities, whether long-distance hiking or trekking, or short-distance hiking or hiking.
[0040] Finally, object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical solution to use, particularly during the modification step.
[0041] The solution idea underlying the present invention is to provide a hiking backpack that can be assembled or disassembled in different ways depending on the needs.
[0042] The aforementioned objects are solved by a convertible hiking backpack comprising a structural, ergonomic backrest, at least one first containment bag, at least one second containment bag, wherein the at least one first containment bag and the at least one second containment bag are connectable alternatively or simultaneously in a removable manner to the structural, ergonomic backrest, wherein the ergonomic, structural backrest is a backrest that can be separated into two backrest portions along an axis substantially central and transversal with respect to the vertebral extension of the ergonomic, structural backrest.
[0043] Advantageously, the present solution allows assembling only the components necessary for the specific hiking route, without waste in terms of available space, bulk and weight.
[0044] Preferably, the at least one first containment bag 3 has a volume between 5 liters and 10 liters and the at least one second containment bag 4 has a volume between 20 liters and 45 liters.
[0045] Advantageously, the present solution allows one to pass from a backpack suitable for a short excursion of a few hours, to a backpack suitable for a multi-day excursion, passing from a minimum to a maximum through intermediate solutions.
[0046] According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the backpack according to the present invention comprises a plurality of first containment bags and / or a plurality of second containment bags, which can be assembled and connected in a modular way on the structural, ergonomic backrest.
[0047] Advantageously, it is thus possible to increase the possibilities for customizing the backpack, consequently increasing the optimization in terms of available volume distribution of the load on the user's shoulders.
[0048] Preferably, the first containment bags of the plurality of first containment bags have different volumes from each other and / or the second containment bags of the plurality of second containment bags have different volumes from each other.
[0049] Therefore, advantageously, it is possible to have a greater range of customization options and specifically a wide range of available volumes, always maintaining correct ergonomics, load distribution and without harmful imbalances for the user during use.
[0050] More preferably, the plurality of first containment bags and / or the plurality of second containment bags have a parallelepiped shape to optimize a modular assembly.
[0051] Therefore, advantageously, there are no unused spaces or interstices, but owing to the shape of the containment bags the total assembly takes on the overall appearance of a single block of backpack, which further improves its aesthetic impact.
[0052] Since the ergonomic structural backrest is a backrest that can be separated into two backrest portions along a substantially central axis transversal with respect to the vertebral development of the ergonomic structural backrest, the present solution allows the overall conformation of the backpack to be substantially changed, not only by modulating the presence of the containment bags, but also selecting the need to have a backrest with a size substantially greater than or equal to the user's back or with a reduced size.
[0053] Preferably, the backpack of the present invention further comprises at least one additional containment element having a volume lower than the at least one first containment bag and lower than the at least one second containment bag, the additional containment element being connectable to the at least one first containment bag or to the at least one second containment bag.
[0054] Advantageously, it is therefore possible to provide additional small pockets, for example for specific objects to be connected to the main bags, for example via straps. Even in this case the additional containment elements can be connected in order to continue to ensure the correct weight distribution.
[0055] Preferably, the at least one first containment bag and / or the at least one second containment bag can be connected in a removable manner to the structural, ergonomic backrest by means of Velcro portions.
[0056] Advantageously, this solution ensures, on the one hand the simplicity of assembly and disassembly, on the other hand it provides sufficient resistance to shear stress to maintain the connection between the backrest and each containment bag at maximum load and during use.
[0057] Nothing prevents one from providing a different connection method, for example using straps, clips or others.
[0058] More preferably, the backpack according to the invention further comprises a lumbar belt placed at a lower portion of the structural, ergonomic backrest and removably connectable to the structural, ergonomic backrest.
[0059] Advantageously, this solution allows for better offloading of the weight of the backpack, which does not weigh totally on the shoulders but is uniformly distributed.
[0060] More preferably, the ergonomic, structural backrest is shaped like an hourglass and includes anchoring positions for the at least one first containment bag and for the at least one second containment bag extending along parallel rows transversal with respect to a vertebral extension and spaced out by a predetermined distance for a balanced distribution of the foreseen volumes and weights.
[0061] Advantageously, the present solution allows the time of use to be increased by reducing load imbalances for the user to a minimum and completely eliminating them.
[0062] Preferably the hiking backpack according to the present invention is made of tear-resistant material.
[0063] Advantageously, the present solution is suitable for any user in any context of use.
[0064] In general, the present invention can find application in the professional or amateur outdoor sports field, in the field of trekking or hiking as well as in the field of travel or in the transport of specialized equipment such as, for example, photographic equipment, medical material, first aid equipment or scientific material. Advantageously, at least one of said containment bags contains specialized equipment such as, for example, photographic equipment, medical material, first aid equipment or scientific material.
[0065] Further characteristics and advantages will become clearer from the detailed description given below of a preferred, but not exclusive, embodiment of the convertible backpack according to the present invention, with reference to the attached figures given by way of example but not by way of limitation.

[0087] DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0088] With reference to the attached figures, 1 globally and schematically indicates a first embodiment of a convertible hiking backpack, made in accordance with the present invention, hereinafter simply called backpack 1 for brevity.
[0089] Specifically, in this case the backpack 1 includes a structural, ergonomic backrest 2, also identified for brevity below as backrest 2, two first containment bags 3 and a second containment bag 4.
[0090] It is reiterated that this is only an illustrative and non-limiting assembly, as will be clear from the following.
[0091] Furthermore, it is underlined that the first containment bag 3 can also be the same as the second containment bag 4 and that these are indicated differently only for the purposes of clarity, as will become clear from the following.
[0092] The backrest 2 includes a metal or carbon fiber frame which ensures the maintenance of the ergonomic characteristics and preferably further includes a covering of synthetic material, for example PU, wrapped on the frame.
[0093] Nothing prohibits the use of a frame made of polymeric or plastic material.
[0094] In the present embodiment, each first containment bag 3 has a volume between 5 liters and 10 liters and the second containment bag 4 has a volume between 20 liters and 45 liters.
[0095] Each first containment bag 3 and the second containment bag 4 can be removably connected to the backrest 2 independently of each other.
[0096] Therefore, it is possible to select and modify the overall capacity of the backpack 1 according to the user's needs by simultaneously or alternatively connecting the first containment bag 3 or the second containment bag 4.
[0097] In the embodiment shown, an additional containment element 5 is further provided, connected at an upper surface 3 A of each first containment bag 3, having a volume lower than each first containment bag 3 and than the second containment bag 4 .
[0098] In this way, there is a specific pocket for small objects that the user wishes to keep separate from the rest and housed individually.
[0099] This additional containment element 5 is connected by buckles, but nothing prevents the use of snap systems or other fastening systems.
[0100] Furthermore, the additional containment element 5 can be separated from the rest to be used, for example, as a pouch.
[0101] As shown in figures 2 and 3, the backrest 2, in this embodiment, is shaped like an hourglass and includes anchoring positions for each first containment bag 3 and for the second containment bag 4 extending along parallel rows transversal with respect to a vertebral extension and spaced out by a predetermined distance for a balanced distribution of the foreseen volumes and weights.
[0102] In other words, the anchoring positions 6 are made so that, for any choice made by the user in assembling the containment bags 3, 4, there is always a correct distribution of volumes and weights, which is relevant in terms of comfort but also maintaining correct posture and correct load distribution for the body.
[0103] According to the non-limiting embodiment illustrated in the figures, the backrest 2 has a substantially sheet-like configuration defining two main faces facing, in use, one, the internal one, towards the user's back or away from the bags 3, 4 and the the other, the external one, away from the back itself or towards the pockets 3, 4. These main faces therefore define the width and length of the backrest as the main dimensions, while the thickness is the smallest dimension of the backrest itself. The backrest 2 is also slightly curved, with the internal concavity face facing the user's back or away from the bags 3, 4.
[0104] In relation to this aspect, the backrest 2 can have a maximum width at the top 2E and the bottom 2F, a width which gradually decreases up to a minimum value at an intermediate portion or band 2G. Essentially, the sides of the backrest 2 have a curved or curvilinear configuration with a concavity towards the outside of the backrest 2 or towards the sides of the backpack.
[0105] The backrest has any suitable width, between approximately 200 mm and approximately 550 mm.
[0106] If a configuration is envisaged with a top and bottom wider than the intermediate portion 2G, then the top 2E and the bottom 2F can have any suitable width, if desired between about 300 mm and about 400 mm, for example between about 310 mm and about 320 mm, while the the width at the intermediate portion 2G is preferably between 1 / 3 and 2 / 3 the width at the top 2E and the bottom 2F.
[0107] Of course, the width of the backrest at the top 2E is not necessarily the same as that of the bottom 2F.
[0108] With reference instead to the length (distance between top 2E and bottom 2F), it can be suitable any, between about 450 and about 650 mm, for example between about 480 and about 550 mm.
[0109] As regards the anchoring positions 6, they can be arranged in any suitable manner. With reference to the specific embodiment illustrated in the figures, two or more, for example four, five or more rows of anchoring positions 6 are provided. More particularly, one or two or more rows are provided in an upper portion 2A of the backrest 2 and one or two or more rows in a lower portion 2B of the backrest 2.
[0110] Each row can then comprise two or more, for example four, five or more anchoring positions 6.
[0111] Two shoulder straps 7 are connected to the backrest 2, connected longitudinally between the widened portions of the backrest 2 shaped as an hourglass, and a lumbar belt 8 placed at a lower portion 9 of the backrest 2.
[0112] Both the shoulder straps 7 and the lumbar belt 8 can be removably connected to the backrest 2.
[0113] Alternatively, a permanent connection can be obtained.
[0114] The shoulder straps 7 have an ergonomic shape, are padded preferably and not limitedly with thick closed cell polyethylene sponge padding and are adjustable using adjustment straps 10.
[0115] The covering is made of breathable material on the part in contact with the skin and of more resistant material towards the outside so as to be less subject to wear when also in contact with the ground.
[0116] Furthermore, pockets (not shown) can be provided on the front.
[0117] The lumbar belt 8 is made in a similar way, with an ergonomic shape useful for wrapping the user's lumbar belt and relieving the weight of the backpack 1.
[0118] 8 A pockets can be provided to hold small objects.
[0119] The straps to tighten the lumbar belt 8, as well as the materials and padding used, are similar to those used for the shoulder straps 7.
[0120] As visible in figure 3, two sternum straps 11 are also included, each made of two half-straps 11 A, 1 IB, connected respectively to each of the shoulder straps 7.
[0121] The two half-straps 11 A, 11B are made at the chest of a user and when connected to each other, for example by means of male-female elements at each end, allow the shoulder straps 7 to be kept in a correct reciprocal position. The same attachment solution, as still visible in figure 3, can be adopted for the lumbar belt 8.
[0122] However, nothing prevents the provision of different attachment systems.
[0123] In figure 3, it will be noted the use of a distancing net 21 designed to keep the back away from the backrest 2 and unload (even if minimally) the weight evenly on the back.
[0124] As visible in figures 4 and 5, in the present embodiment of the invention the backrest 2 can be separated into two backrest portions, an upper portion 2A and a lower portion 2B, along a substantially central and transversal X axis with respect to the vertebral extension of the backrest 2.
[0125] In the embodiment shown, the upper portion 2A is removably connected to the lower portion 2B by means of any suitable system, for example "quick release" 14.
[0126] Nothing prevents one from using different connection systems, such as connection straps, interlocking tubes, threaded connections, or others.
[0127] The upper portion 2A can also be used independently of the lower portion 2B.
[0128] The shoulder straps 7 are in fact connected in such a way as to allow the use of the upper portion 2A only.
[0129] Specifically, the adjustment straps 10 of the shoulder straps are connected to the upper portion 2 A at the section 2C separated from the lower portion 2B.
[0130] In this way the shoulder straps 7 can be worn by the user and the upper portion 2A acts independently as a backrest.
[0131] The first containment bag 3 and / or the second containment bag 4 can thus be connected to the upper portion 2A, thereby reducing the overall size of the backpack 1, which becomes suitable and optimized for a short excursion.
[0132] Furthermore, nothing prevents the provision of a single, non-separable backrest 2. The backrest 2 further includes a grip handle 13, at the upper portion 2A opposite to the section 2C, made of material generally similar to the adjustment straps 10. Therefore, the backpack 1 can be gripped for short movements using this grip handle 13.
[0133] Figures 6 to 9 show the first containment bag 3 and the second containment bag 4 in greater detail. In both cases it is expected that they can be removably connected to the backrest 2 by means of Velcro portions 12 located at the anchoring positions 6 of the backrest 2.
[0134] In particular, Velcro straps are provided, inserted into holes provided at the anchoring positions 6 and wrapped around themselves to carry out the fastening.
[0135] Nothing prevents one from adopting different connection solutions, for example a clip connection, or even a connection using magnetic elements, or other solutions, all included in the scope defined by the attached claims.
[0136] In the configuration with the divisible backrest 2, a cushion or pad 2D is further provided in a central position with respect to both longitudinal axes and transversely with respect to the backrest 2, which allows the back to be far from the backrest 2 when only the upper portion 2A is used (for the entire configuration the lower pad and the spacing net 21) are sufficient and thus soften the support of the backrest on the back. This pad is preferably removable so as to remove it if not desired or to ensure washing.
[0137] Furthermore, the first containment bag 3 and the second containment bag 4 comprise an upper band 18 and a lower pocket 19 suitable for vertically compacting the modules together when fastened to the backrest 2, and making them firm and compact together vertically thanks to the interaction between an upper band 18 of a containment bag and a lower pocket 19 of another containment bag.
[0138] The second containment bag 4, in the present embodiment, has an upper surface such as to also allow two additional containment elements 5 to be connected simultaneously.
[0139] The containment bags 3, 4 are made of tear-resistant material, preferably but not limited to waterproof.
[0140] Furthermore, the containment bags 3, 4 have a front opening 15, and not upper, this solution facilitating access to all the objects contained inside the backpack 1.
[0141] Furthermore, the containment bags 3, 4 in the exemplary embodiment shown include a containment net 16 connected and adhering to one of their lateral surfaces to allow the temporary fixing of some specific objects which one wants to have immediately at hand. Figure 10 shows a second containment bag 4' alternative to the second containment bag 4, having a comparable volume but an alternative conformation.
[0142] Furthermore, as can be seen, buttons 20 are provided which are located on the lateral surface and are suitable for fastening the containment bags together. This solution is used to ensure that the containment bags attached to the backrest 2 also remain firm and compact with each other, in a transverse direction with respect to the development of the backrest 2.
[0143] In other words, the upper band 18 and the lower pocket 19 are needed to compact the containment bags vertically, while the buttons 20 are needed to compact the containment bags horizontally with respect to a longitudinal extension of the backrest 2.
[0144] It is possible to provide alternatively or simultaneously the presence of the buttons 20 with the presence of an upper band 18 and a lower pocket 19 for any containment bag.
[0145] Of course, it is possible to select for each containment bag morphology which additional solution is most useful. Furthermore, it is also possible to use multiple solutions in series.
[0146] For example, in the case of the containment bag, two upper bands 18 and two lower pockets 19 can be provided. The upper bands 18 each cover a surface distributed from the center towards one side. By doing so, a stronger constraint is possible than having a single upper band 18 from one side to the other side of the containment bag 4. The two lower pockets 19 can instead be used in the case in which two containment bags 3 are provided, each being therefore connectable to a lower pocket 19.
[0147] Preferably, the user has at his disposal a plurality of first containment bags 3 and / or a plurality of second containment bags 4, 4', which can be assembled and connected in a modular manner on the backrest 2, even more preferably with different volumes thus to give total flexibility to the user in selecting the desired volume for the specific excursion.
[0148] Furthermore, to allow modularity and an optimal and easily modifiable assembly capacity, it is noted that the containment bags 3, 4, 4' represented have a parallelepiped shape, preferably with shapes such as to generate compact and optimized overall assemblies. Furthermore, to further increase loading flexibility, all the containment bags are preferably expandable, i.e. they include a lateral surface that can be extended, with a consequent forward movement of the front surface.
[0149] In particular, a portion of the lateral surface is provided, compacted in a perimeter pocket and closed by a zip 17, and if necessary this can be opened and extended, increasing the internal capacity of the containment bag 3, 4, 4'.
[0150] Figures 11 to 19 show how the backpack 1 according to the present invention allows it to be assembled according to different configurations by using a plurality of first containment bags 3 and / or second containment bags 4, 4'.
[0151] Therefore, it is possible to pass from a more substantial volume such as, for example, that visible in figure 17 with the complete backrest 2 and four containment bags with different volumes, to a very limited volume, such as for example the one visible in figure 18, in which backpack 1 is shown with only the upper portion 2A of the backrest 2 with two containment bags.
[0152] Therefore, advantageously the present invention provides a backpack 1 that can be highly remodulated according to specific needs.
[0153] Furthermore, advantageously, the assembly and disassembly steps are very simple for the user, who therefore, without particular specific instructions, is able to modify the backpack 1 according to his own needs.
[0154] Again advantageously, the present invention is suitable for both shortdistance hiking and long-distance hiking, ensuring an optimized volume of space for each activity.
[0155] Further advantageously, the present invention allows the structure of the backpack to be remodulated without affecting the correct distribution of the loads, which always allow a correct posture for the user.
[0156] In other words, the attachment systems used are arranged so as to always be correctly distributed on the backrest, which also ensures a pleasant aesthetic impact.
[0157] Finally, advantageously, the solutions in terms of materials and accessories ensure a long-lasting life of use of the backpack.
[0158] The expert in the field will understand that the presented embodiment can be subject to further modifications and variations, according to specific and contingent needs, all included within the scope of the invention, as defined by the following claims.
