[0001] Cross-citation with related application(s)
[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0079238, filed June 20, 2023, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.
[0003] The present invention relates to a battery pack and an automobile system capable of detecting a coolant leak.
[0004] Batteries are used in a variety of fields, and recent applications, such as electric vehicles and smart grid systems, often require large capacities. While increasing battery pack capacity can be achieved by increasing the capacity of the secondary batteries themselves, this approach has the disadvantage of not achieving significant capacity gains, physical limitations on secondary battery size expansion, and inconvenient management. Therefore, battery packs consisting of multiple battery modules connected in series and parallel are typically widely used.
[0005] These battery packs often include a battery management system (BMS) that manages the battery modules. Furthermore, the BMS monitors the temperature, voltage, and current of the battery modules, and can control the battery pack's balancing, cooling, charging, or discharging operations based on the monitored battery module status.
[0006] The temperature of the battery module, or secondary battery, is a critical factor affecting the performance of the battery pack. Generally, a battery pack operates efficiently when the temperature of the secondary battery is distributed within an appropriate range. For example, if the temperature of the secondary battery is too high, the performance of the battery pack may deteriorate, for example, due to a decrease in the stability of the secondary battery's cathode crystal lattice. Therefore, the temperature of the secondary battery must be appropriately controlled.
[0007] Typically, battery packs are designed to contain coolant within the battery pack to maintain an appropriate temperature for the secondary battery, with the coolant flowing around the battery. However, if the coolant leaks, the amount of circulating coolant decreases, potentially preventing the secondary battery from maintaining its temperature. Furthermore, coolant leaks can cause electrical accidents, potentially damaging components within the battery pack.
[0008] The present invention provides a battery pack and an automobile system capable of detecting a coolant leak with a simple configuration.
[0009] A battery pack according to one feature of the present invention includes a first resistor and a second resistor connected in series between a power source supplying a predetermined voltage and a ground terminal, a case enclosing the first resistor and the second resistor, and a detection voltage measuring unit including a variable resistor connected in parallel between one end and the other end of the second resistor and located outside the case, and a coolant leak diagnosis unit that diagnoses a leak of the coolant when a detection voltage of a contact point of the first resistor and the second resistor falls within a reference range calculated based on the conductivity of the coolant.
[0010] The variable resistor includes a first detection node connected to the first end and a second detection node connected to the other end at a predetermined distance from the first detection node, and the first detection node and the second detection node can be electrically connected by the coolant.
[0011] The above coolant leak diagnosis unit can diagnose non-leakage of the coolant when the size of the detection voltage corresponds to a first reference value that is a predetermined voltage greater than the maximum value of the reference range.
[0012] The above coolant leak diagnosis unit may further include a control unit that diagnoses whether the coolant leaks based on the magnitude of the detection voltage, and an RC filter circuit that receives the detection voltage and transmits it to the control unit.
[0013] The above battery pack further includes a plurality of detection voltage measuring units, and the plurality of detection voltage measuring units can be installed at a predetermined interval from the bottom surface to the top surface of the battery pack.
[0014] The above detection voltage measuring unit may further include a first capacitor connected between a contact point between the power source and the first resistor and a ground terminal.
[0015] According to another aspect of the present invention, an automobile system comprises: an automobile control unit that sets a reference range for determining a leakage of the coolant based on the conductivity of the coolant; and a battery pack that diagnoses a leakage of the coolant based on the reference range; wherein the battery pack comprises: a detection voltage measuring unit including a first resistor and a second resistor connected in series between a power source supplying a predetermined voltage and a ground terminal; a case surrounding the first resistor and the second resistor; and a variable resistor connected in parallel between one end and the other end of the second resistor and positioned outside the case; and a coolant leak diagnosis unit that diagnoses a leakage of the coolant when a detection voltage of a contact point of the first resistor and the second resistor falls within a reference range calculated based on the conductivity of the coolant.
[0016] The variable resistor includes a first detection node connected to the first end and a second detection node connected to the other end at a predetermined distance from the first detection node, and the first detection node and the second detection node can be electrically connected by the coolant.
[0017] The above coolant leak diagnosis unit can diagnose non-leakage of the coolant when the size of the detection voltage corresponds to a first reference value that is a predetermined voltage greater than the maximum value of the reference range.
[0018] The above coolant leak diagnosis unit may further include a control unit that diagnoses whether the coolant leaks based on the magnitude of the detection voltage, and an RC filter circuit that receives the detection voltage and transmits it to the control unit.
[0019] The present invention can effectively detect a coolant leak with a simple configuration.

[0029]
[0030] FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating an automobile system according to one embodiment, and FIG. 2 is a conceptual diagram illustrating the relationship between the components illustrated in FIG. 1.
[0031] Referring to FIG. 1, the automobile system (1) includes an automobile communication unit (11), an automobile control unit (13), and a battery pack (100).
[0032] The vehicle communication unit (11) can communicate with the battery pack (100) to transmit various commands and receive various data. For example, the vehicle communication unit (11) can transmit a reference range and a first reference value set by the vehicle control unit (13) to the battery pack (100). As another example, the vehicle communication unit (11) can receive messages corresponding to coolant leak diagnosis, etc.
[0033] The vehicle control unit (13) can set a reference range that serves as a criterion for determining a coolant leak based on the conductivity of the coolant. In addition, the vehicle control unit (13) can set a first reference value that serves as a criterion for determining a coolant non-leakage event based on a circuit within the battery pack (100), etc.
[0034] The battery pack (100) includes a coolant storage device (10), a detection voltage measuring unit (20), and a coolant leak diagnostic unit (30).
[0035] Although not illustrated in FIG. 1, the battery pack (100) may further include a battery module (not illustrated). The battery module may include a plurality of battery cells (not illustrated). In one embodiment, the battery cells may be rechargeable batteries, and the battery cells may include a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and an electrolyte. In one embodiment, a predetermined number of battery cells may be connected in series or parallel to form a battery module.
[0036] The coolant storage device (10) may be a device that stores coolant to absorb heat from battery cells and prevent them from overheating. For example, the coolant storage device (10) may be positioned close to the battery modules. For another example, if the battery pack (100) includes a plurality of battery modules, the coolant storage device (10) may be configured in the form of a plate positioned between the plurality of battery modules. However, the present invention is not limited thereto, and the coolant storage device (10) may be formed in various shapes and at various locations within the battery pack (100).
[0037] The detection voltage measuring unit (20) is a device that detects coolant leaked from the coolant storage device (10). According to an embodiment, the detection voltage measuring unit (20) may be positioned adjacent to the inner bottom surface of the battery pack (100). For example, referring to FIG. 4, when coolant leaked from the coolant storage device (10) reaches a predetermined height (h) on the inner bottom surface of the battery pack (100), the detection voltage measuring unit (20) may be installed at a position where it can come into contact with the leaked coolant.
[0038] Referring to FIG. 2, according to an embodiment, the battery pack (100) may include a plurality of detection voltage measuring units (20-1, 20-n). The plurality of detection voltage measuring units (20-1, 20-n) may be installed at various locations inside the battery pack (100). For example, when the plurality of detection voltage measuring units (20-1, 20-n) are installed at predetermined intervals from the bottom surface to the top surface inside the battery pack (100), the height of the leaked coolant can be inferred. In FIG. 2, the plurality of detection voltage measuring units (20-1, 20-n) are illustrated as being installed at substantially the same height, but this is not limited thereto, and they may be installed at different heights as described above. In addition, the plurality of detection voltage measuring units (20-1, 20-n) may be installed at various locations inside the battery pack (100) where coolant detection is required.
[0039] The coolant leak diagnosis unit (30) can detect whether coolant is leaking based on an electrical signal received from the detection voltage measurement unit (20). For example, the coolant leak diagnosis unit (30) may be a battery management system (BMS). However, it is not limited thereto, and a separate control unit other than the BMS or an automobile control unit (13) of an automobile system (1) may perform the function of the coolant leak diagnosis unit (30).
[0040] Below, with reference to FIGS. 3 and 4, the configuration of the detection voltage measurement unit (20) and the coolant leak diagnosis unit (30) is described in detail.
[0041]
[0042] FIG. 3 is a circuit diagram explaining in detail the configuration of the detection voltage measurement unit and the coolant leak diagnosis unit of FIG. 1, FIG. 4 is an exemplary diagram explaining a situation in which coolant has leaked according to one embodiment, and FIG. 5 is a conceptual diagram explaining a reference range and a first reference value according to one embodiment.
[0043] Hereinafter, in FIGS. 3 and 4, a single detection voltage measuring unit (20) is described, but the description can be equally applied to all of the plurality of detection voltage measuring units (20-1, 20-n) of FIG. 2. Hereinafter, when indicating a specific detection voltage measuring unit among the plurality of detection voltage measuring units (20-1, 20-n), the reference numeral “20-j” is used, and the first resistor, the first capacitor, the voltage measuring node, the second resistor, the first detection node, the second detection node, and the variable resistor included in the corresponding detection voltage measuring unit (20-j) are respectively designated by “201-j, 204-j, Nd-j, 202-j, N1-j, N2-j, 203-j”.
[0044] The detection voltage measuring unit (20-j) includes a first resistor (201-j), a second resistor (202-j), a variable resistor (203-j), and a case (CA) that accommodates the first resistor (201-j) and the second resistor (202-j) therein. In one embodiment, the detection voltage measuring unit (20-j) may further include a first capacitor (204-j).
[0045] In one embodiment, a power supply for supplying a predetermined voltage (Vs) may be generated from the voltage of a battery module (e.g., 110 of FIG. 1). For this purpose, the detection voltage measurement unit (20-j) may further include a voltage regulator (not shown). The voltage (Vs) may be, for example, 5 V. In one embodiment, when the voltage (Vs) is set to 5 V, it is assumed that 100 kΩ, 510 kΩ, and 100 nF are used for the first resistor (201-j), the second resistor (202-j), and the first capacitor (204-j), respectively. However, the present invention is not limited thereto, and various resistance values, etc. may be set according to various designs.
[0046] The first capacitor (204-j) can discharge the noise component of the power supply to the ground. That is, the first capacitor (204-j) can be mounted on the detection voltage measurement unit (20-j) for a noise removal filter or bypass function.
[0047] The case (CA) can be configured to accommodate the first resistor (201-j) and the second resistor (202-j) inside, and the variable resistor (203-j) outside. Then, when the coolant leaks, the first resistor (201-j) and the second resistor (202-j) do not come into contact with the coolant, and only the variable resistor (203-j) can come into contact with the coolant. In FIGS. 2 to 4, the case (CA) is configured to be spaced apart from the coolant leak diagnosis unit (30) by a predetermined distance, but is not limited thereto, and may be formed integrally with the case of the coolant leak diagnosis unit (30).
[0048] The first resistor (201-j) may be connected between a power source supplying a predetermined voltage (Vs) and a voltage measurement node (Nd-j), and the second resistor (202-j) may be connected between the voltage measurement node (Nd-j) and the ground. That is, the first resistor (201-j) and the second resistor (202-j) may be connected in series between the power source and the ground. In addition, the variable resistor (203-j) may be connected in parallel between one end and the other end of the second resistor (202-j).
[0049] The variable resistor (203-j) does not form a current path when coolant does not leak from the coolant storage device (10), but can form a current path by the leaked coolant when coolant leaks from the coolant storage device (10).
[0050] Referring to FIG. 3 together, the variable resistor (203-j) may include two detection nodes (N1, N2) formed spaced apart from each other. It may include a first detection node (N1) connected to one end of a second resistor (202-j) and a second detection node (N2) connected to the other end of the second resistor (202-j) at a predetermined distance from the first detection node (N1). According to one embodiment, when the coolant of the coolant storage device (10) leaks, the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2) may be electrically connected by the coolant.
[0051] As illustrated in FIG. 3, if there is no coolant leak, the magnitude of the resistance between the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2) may be infinite (∞). That is, no current may flow between the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2). Accordingly, the effect of the first resistor (201-j) and the second resistor (202-j) being connected in series between the voltage (Vs) and the ground may be achieved. Then, the magnitude of the detection voltage at the voltage measurement node (Nd-j), which is the contact point of the first resistor (201-j) and the second resistor (202-j), may be calculated from the following mathematical equation (1).
[0052] - Mathematical formula (1)
[0053] Mathematical expression (1) can correspond to a mathematical expression for calculating the magnitude of the voltage between the two terminals of some resistors among a plurality of resistors connected in series, which is widely known in the past. In mathematical expression (1), V_Nd is the detection voltage (V_Nd) when there is no coolant leak, Vs is the voltage (Vs) of the power supply, R_201 is the first resistor (201-j), and R_202 is the second resistor (202-j). Assuming that the magnitudes of the first resistor (201-j), the second resistor (202-j), and the voltage (Vs) are 100 kΩ, 510 kΩ, and 5 V, respectively, the magnitude of the detection voltage (V_Nd) can be calculated to be approximately 4.18 V by mathematical expression (1). That is, when there is no coolant leak, the magnitude of the detection voltage (V_Nd) is approximately 4.18 V.
[0054] As illustrated in FIG. 4, the coolant (Col) may leak from the coolant storage device (10) due to various causes. When the coolant (Col) is positioned between the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2), the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2) may be electrically connected through the coolant (Col). At this time, the resistance value of the variable resistor (203-j) may be determined by a component contained in the coolant (Col). Hereinafter, for example, when the coolant (Col) is positioned between the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2), the size of the variable resistor (203-j) is assumed to be 250 kΩ. However, the present invention is not limited thereto, and the size of the variable resistor (203-j) may be determined based on conductivity determined by various components contained in the coolant (Col).
[0055] When the coolant (Col) is positioned between the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2), the variable resistor (203-j) can have the effect of being connected in parallel with the second resistor (202-j). The size of the parallel resistance for the second resistor (202-j) and the variable resistor (203-j) can be calculated by the following mathematical equation (2).
[0056] - Mathematical formula (2)
[0057] Mathematical expression (2) can correspond to a mathematical expression that is widely known in the past for calculating the size of a parallel resistor. In mathematical expression (2), R_202 is a second resistor (202-j), R_203 is a variable resistor (203-j), and R_pall is a parallel resistor. As previously assumed, the sizes of the second resistor (202-j) and the variable resistor (203-j) are 510 kΩ and 250 kΩ, respectively, so the size of the parallel resistor (R_pall) can be calculated to be approximately 167.8 kΩ by mathematical expression (2).
[0058] Referring again to FIG. 4, the first resistor (201-j) and the parallel resistor (R_pall) are connected in series between the power source and the ground, and the magnitude of the detection voltage at the voltage measurement node (Nd-j), which is the contact point of the first resistor (201-j) and the parallel resistor (R_pall), can be calculated from the following mathematical equation (3).
[0059] -Mathematical formula (2)
[0060] Mathematical expression (3) can correspond to the mathematical expression (1) described above. In mathematical expression (3), V'_Nd corresponds to the detection voltage (V_Nd) when the coolant leaks. Assuming that the sizes of the first resistor (201-j), the parallel resistor (R_pall), and the voltage (Vs) are 100 kΩ, 167.8 kΩ, and 5 V, respectively, the size of the detection voltage (V'_Nd) can be calculated to be approximately 3.13 V by mathematical expression (3). That is, when the coolant leaks, the size of the detection voltage (V'_Nd) is approximately 3.13 V.
[0061] Referring back to FIG. 3, when the coolant (Col) is not leaking, air exists between the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2), and since the conductivity of air is close to '0', the size of the variable resistor (203-j) can be viewed as infinite (∞). Referring back to FIG. 4, when the coolant (Col) having conductivity leaks, the coolant (Col) exists between the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2), and the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2) are electrically connected through the coolant (Col). That is, since current flows between the first detection node (N1) and the second detection node (N2), the state in which current does not flow is relatively changed to a state in which current flows, and the size of the variable resistor (203-j) can be viewed as decreasing.
[0062] Coolant (Col) may contain water (50% to 60%), organic compounds (ethylene glycol), preservatives, pH regulators, and other metals (e.g., Si, Na, etc.). For example, if there are three types of commercially available coolants (Col), the sizes of the variable resistor (203-j) are assumed to be 250kΩ, 100kΩ, and 50kΩ.
[0063]
[0064] Table 1 above summarizes the size of the detection voltage (V'_Nd) according to the size of the variable resistor (203-j). This is calculated based on the size of the variable resistor (203-j) calculated based on the composition of the coolant (Col) actually used in the market. In other words, the size of the variable resistor (203-j) may vary depending on the type of coolant (Col).
[0065] For example, if the size of the variable resistor (203-j) is 250 kΩ, the size of the detection voltage (V_Nd) may be approximately 4.18 V if the coolant (Col) does not leak, and the size of the detection voltage (V_Nd) may be approximately 3.13 V if the coolant (Col) leaks. For another example, if the size of the variable resistor (203-j) is 100 kΩ, the size of the detection voltage (V_Nd) may be approximately 4.18 V if the coolant (Col) does not leak, and the size of the detection voltage (V_Nd) may be approximately 2.28 V if the coolant (Col) leaks. For another example, if the size of the variable resistor (203-j) is 50 kΩ, the size of the detection voltage (V_Nd) may be approximately 4.18 V if the coolant (Col) does not leak, and the size of the detection voltage (V_Nd) may be approximately 1.57 V if the coolant (Col) leaks. That is, if the coolant (Col) does not leak, the size of the detection voltage (V_Nd) is constant at approximately 4.18 V, and if the coolant (Col) leaks, the size of the detection voltage (V_Nd) may vary depending on the size of the variable resistor (203-j).
[0066] According to an embodiment, if the coolant (Col) does not leak, the magnitude of the detection voltage (V_Nd) may be substantially equal to the first reference value (Vth_1), and if the coolant (Col) leaks, the magnitude of the detection voltage (V_Nd) may fall within the reference range (△Vth_2).
[0067] The reference range (△Vth_2) can be calculated as a voltage section that reflects the sizes of various variable resistors (203-j) determined by various types of coolants (Col). For example, referring to Fig. 5, assuming that the sizes of the first resistor (201-j), the second resistor (202-j), the voltage (Vs), and the first capacitor (204-j) are 100 kΩ, 510 kΩ, 5 V, and 100 nF, respectively, the first reference value (Vth_1) is 4.18 V, and the reference range (△Vth_2) can correspond to 1.57 V or more and 3.13 V or less. According to an embodiment, the lower limit of the reference range (△Vth_2) may be determined based on the minimum value among the sizes of the variable resistors (203-j) produced by each of the plurality of coolants, and the upper limit of the reference range (△Vth_2) may be determined based on the maximum value among the sizes of the variable resistors (203-j). At this time, the first reference value (Vth_1) and the reference range (△Vth_2) may be determined by reflecting a predetermined error. In addition, the first reference value (Vth_1) may be a predetermined voltage greater than the maximum value of the reference range (△Vth_2).
[0068] Referring again to FIG. 3, the coolant leak diagnosis unit (30) includes an RC filter circuit (301-j, 302-j), a communication unit (31), a control unit (33), and a storage unit (32). According to one embodiment, the coolant leak diagnosis unit (30) may be configured as a battery management system (BMS) of a battery pack.
[0069] The detection voltage (V_Nd) can be transmitted to the RC filter circuit (301-j, 302-j). The detection voltage (V_Nd) that has passed through the RC filter circuit (301-j, 302-j) can be input to the control unit (33). According to an embodiment, the coolant leak diagnosis unit (30) may further include an analog to digital converter (ADC) (not shown) for converting the detection voltage (V_Nd) of the detection voltage measurement unit (20-j) into a digital signal that can be received by the control unit (33).
[0070] Referring to FIGS. 3 and 4, the RC filter circuits (301-j, 302-j) may be configured in a number (n) corresponding to each of a plurality of detection voltage measurement units (20-1, 20-n). In FIG. 3, the RC filter circuits (301-j, 302-j) are illustrated as being included in the coolant leak diagnosis unit (30), but are not limited thereto, and may be configured to be included in the detection voltage measurement unit (20-j).
[0071] The communication unit (31) can communicate with the automobile system (1) to receive various control signals and transmit information on whether coolant (Col) is leaking. For example, the communication unit (31) can receive information on the first reference value (Vth_1) and reference range (△Vth_2) from the automobile system (1).
[0072] The control unit (33) can diagnose the occurrence of a leak of coolant (Col) and a defect in the detection voltage measuring unit (20-j) based on the detection voltage (V_Nd) transmitted from the detection voltage measuring unit (20-j).
[0073] Referring to Fig. 5, for example, if the detection voltage (V_Nd) falls within the reference range (△Vth_2), it is diagnosed that the coolant (Col) is leaking. For another example, if the detection voltage (V_Nd) is substantially equal to the first reference value (Vth_1), the control unit (33) can diagnose that the coolant (Col) is not leaking and that the state of the detection voltage measurement unit (20-j) is also normal. For another example, if the detection voltage (V_Nd) falls within the first defect diagnosis range corresponding to the lower limit of the reference range (△Vth_2) of 0 V or more, the control unit (33) can diagnose that the power supply and the voltage measurement node (Nd-j) are short-circuited. For another example, if the detection voltage (V_Nd) falls within the second defect diagnosis range corresponding to the voltage (Vs) below the upper limit of the reference range (△Vth_2), the control unit (33) can diagnose the defect as a short between the power supply and the ground.
[0074] Although the embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail above, the scope of the present invention is not limited thereto, and various modifications and improvements made by a person having ordinary skill in the art to which the present invention pertains also fall within the scope of the present invention.
