Abstract
Description
[0001] DESCRIPTION
[0002] DECORATIVE, PROTECTIVE AND / OR FUNCTIONAL PROCESS OF A METAL PIECE FOR PERFUMERY AND COSMETIC CONTAINERS OR OTHER USES, AND METAL PIECE WITH DECORATIVE AND / OR FUNCTIONAL FINISH FOR PERFUMERY AND COSMETIC CONTAINERS OR OTHER USES
[0003] OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
[0004] The invention, as expressed in the statement of this specification, refers to a decorative, protective and / or functional process for a metal part for perfume and cosmetics containers or other uses, which can be applied as a decorative and / or functional element, as well as to the metal part resulting from the process with a decorative and / or functional finish for perfume and cosmetics containers or other uses, which provides advantages and characteristics, which are described in detail below.
[0005] The object of the present invention lies in a decorative, protective and / or functional process for a piece of metal, such as aluminum, steel or stainless steel and other metallic materials, which, intended to serve as a container or as a decorative, protective and / or functional element of a container or other cosmetic item, for example as a stopper, collar or lid, but without ruling out other uses, preferably obtained by stamping, and also preferably with a glossy, mirror-effect finish.
[0006] Specifically, the decorative, protective and / or functional process of a metal part object of the invention has the particularity of maintaining the surface finish of the polished and brightened metal part, without the need for a conventional anodizing process to give it the shiny mirror-effect finish that is currently being carried out on this type of parts.
[0007] Furthermore, the decorative, protective and / or functional process of a metal part object of the invention allows to make shine, and maintain the shine, in metals that do not usually shine after an anodizing process, such as aluminum with a high percentage of recycled aluminum (Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) and Post Industrial Recycled (PIR)) or machined, injected or extruded aluminum.
[0008] FIELD OF APPLICATION OF THE INVENTION
[0009] The scope of the present invention falls within the sector of the industry dedicated to the manufacture of perfume and cosmetic containers, perfumery, and similar products, focusing particularly on the area of metal parts, both decorative and functional, which are typically included in this type of packaging. The present invention can be applied not only to packaging parts but also to complete products such as metal containers (aerosol containers or refillable containers).
[0010] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0011] As is well known, containers and other packaging items for cosmetic products such as cases and similar items, as well as those from other sectors, but especially in the field of cosmetics and perfumery, often include elements such as stoppers, collars, lids and others, made from metal parts, often made of aluminum, and commonly with a shiny, mirror-effect finish. Occasionally, even an entire container is made of metal, such as an aerosol container or a refillable container. This is usually because said finish provides a visual appeal that helps capture the attention of consumers, because it creates a sense of richness and luxury, it produces visual effects of reflections that attract attention and, eventually, it can provide special protection of the product from light or other external factors.
[0012] The problem is that obtaining these types of parts, which are usually manufactured through stamping, machining, extrusion, or injection processes, usually involves a surface treatment process, such as anodizing, to give it the desired glossy finish.
[0013] As is well known, anodizing is an electrochemical process that generally requires water and energy, but in addition to its aesthetic properties, it provides corrosion resistance and increases the hardness of the part.
[0014] Furthermore, anodizing isn't a process capable of making all metals shine, especially those with a high content of recycled aluminum (PCR and PIR). During the anodizing process, these parts become dull and lack luster.
[0015] The objective of the present invention is, therefore, to provide the market with a new type of metal part, preferably obtained by stamping and also preferably with a glossy mirror-effect finish, which, offering the same aesthetic effect features of a mirror finish and sufficient resistance for its intended function, avoids the anodizing process.
[0016] The present invention is particularly relevant when the metal part is manufactured with less pure aluminium alloys (aluminium with a high content of recycled aluminium PCR and / or PIR), with new materials (such as steel and stainless steel), or when the part has been formed by machining, injection or extrusion, it is not possible to obtain a mirror-like gloss finish by means of standard anodising and it is necessary to carry out an improved specific polishing process, so that, after the protection stage, the same degree of mirror-like gloss that the sector demands is achieved, as that which results from standard anodising.
[0017] On the other hand, and as a reference to the current state of the art, it should be noted that, at least on the part of the applicant, the existence of any other metal piece or metal container that presents technical, structural and constitutive characteristics equal to or similar to those claimed here is unknown.
[0018] EXPLANATION OF THE INVENTION
[0019] Decorative, protective and / or functional process of a piece or container made of metal, such as aluminum, steel or stainless steel, which is intended to serve as a container or as a decorative element and / or functional element of a container or other cosmetic article that the invention proposes, is configured as an optimal solution to the objectives indicated above, the characterizing details that make it possible and that distinguish it being conveniently included in the final claims that accompany this description.
[0020] Specifically, what the invention proposes, as indicated above, is a decorative, protective and / or functional process for a piece of metal, such as aluminum, steel or stainless steel, intended to serve as a container or as a decorative element and / or functional element of a container or other cosmetic item, for example as a stopper, as a collar, as a lid, but without ruling out other uses, which is preferably a piece obtained by stamping, and which is also preferably a piece of the type that has a glossy mirror-effect finish, is distinguished by the fact that the glossy finish of the substrate is obtained by means of a polishing and / or shining stage after which a final coating layer is applied, such as a lacquer.
[0021] Polishing is understood as a process by which the surface of a part is smoothed, reducing roughness and reducing and / or eliminating marks, friction, scratches and small defects generated during the part forming process.
[0022] Polishing is understood as a process by which the roughness of the surface of the piece is reduced to obtain and / or enhance the shine, in addition to generating a luster and uniformity in the surface finish.
[0023] Thanks to this, the piece resulting from the decorative, protective and / or functional process object of the invention is a piece of aluminum or other metal with a mirror-effect finish where the anodizing that is normally applied to said pieces to give them the mirror-effect finish with protection has not been applied.
[0024] The metal part is, in some embodiments, made of aluminum (including aluminum of different alloys, various degrees of purity and including a large percentage, or entirely, of recycled material), steel, stainless steel or copper, although other materials are not ruled out.
[0025] In some embodiments, the metal part is made of virgin aluminum. Virgin aluminum is a high-purity alloy commonly used in the cosmetics packaging industry due to its high gloss after anodizing and the associated variety of colors. However, the electropolishing and anodizing process required to achieve a mirror effect has some disadvantages or limitations.
[0026] In other embodiments, the metal part comprises PCR and / or PIR aluminum, i.e., recycled aluminum (Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) and Post Industrial Recycled (PIR)). For example, the metal part may contain up to 100% PCR and / or PIR aluminum.
[0027] When an aluminum part containing more than 8% PCR and / or PIR aluminum is anodized, it loses its shine, resulting in a matte finish. Since a mirror effect is generally required in the luxury cosmetics sector, the use of PCR and / or PIR aluminum is not common in the luxury cosmetics sector as they cannot provide the required mirror effect.
[0028] Currently, in the luxury cosmetics sector, there is a barrier to the use of recycled metals, such as PCR and / or PIR aluminum, because above 8% PCR and / or PIR, the material does not shine when anodized. The result is a matte finish that is unattractive to the luxury cosmetics and perfumery sector.
[0029] However, the use of recycled materials (PCR and / or PIR) in the manufacture of metal parts entails a significant reduction in polluting emissions, such as CO2. For example, CO2 emissions from manufacturing aluminum with 20% PCR and / or PIR aluminum can be up to 78.9% lower than CO2 emissions from manufacturing virgin aluminum.
[0030] As the market trend is toward increasingly using recycled materials and companies are beginning to define their sustainability plans, which include greater use of recycled materials, it would be interesting to have a decorative, protective, and / or functional process for metal parts that, after completion, would display a mirror effect. The metal part (whether made of virgin or recycled material) can be formed using various techniques.
[0031] In some embodiments, the metal part is formed by machining. In a more specific embodiment, the machined parts are subsequently ground using a high-quality grinding process (roughness less than 0.8 microns). It is known that machined aluminum parts considerably lose their shine when anodized. The lack of shine, i.e., a matte finish, is not attractive to the luxury cosmetics and perfume packaging sector. However, machined metal parts offer a greater sense of luxury as they are heavier than metal parts obtained by other systems, such as casting. It would be interesting to have a decorative, protective, and / or functional process for machined metal parts that, afterward, would display a mirror effect. In this way, it would be possible to obtain machined metal parts with a mirror effect.
[0032] In some embodiments, the metal part is formed by injection molding. Injected or die-cast aluminum, both cast and conventional, is difficult to polish to achieve a high surface gloss. Typical polishing technologies, where the objective is to remove burrs or excess material from the injection process, such as bulk vibration polishing with abrasives such as metal particles, porcelain fragments, or walnut shells, expose the porosity of the metal and make it difficult to achieve a smooth, glossy surface. This is true for many alloys such as L-2521 (AB-47100), L-2520 (AB-44100), or L-2631 (AB-46000). It would be interesting to have a decorative, protective, and / or functional process for injected metal parts that would display a mirror effect after processing. In some embodiments, the metal part is formed by extrusion.Like machined aluminum, extruded aluminum loses its shine when anodized, resulting in a matte finish. It would be interesting to have a decorative, protective, and / or functional process for extruded metal parts that would display a mirror effect after anodizing.
[0033] In some embodiments, the metal part is formed by cold forging, that is, by pressure alone (without removing or adding any material or heat). The resulting part does not offer a shiny, mirror-like surface. It would be interesting to have a decorative, protective, and / or functional process for metal parts formed by forging that would display a mirror effect afterward.
[0034] To date, one of the most common ways to achieve a mirror-effect finish on aluminum parts is through an anodizing process. There are also other techniques for adding material to aluminum to achieve a mirror-effect finish (PVD, metallization, galvanization).
[0035] Polishing of metal parts, such as aluminum, iron, copper, brass, zinc, steel or stainless steel, has so far been used to eliminate defects created during the forming of the part, to reduce excessive roughness or to achieve sharper edges: this contributes to making it possible to obtain the mirror effect after the chemical polishing stage (which typically precedes the anodizing stage) and anodizing of the aluminum part.
[0036] The present invention proposes a polishing and / or shining process that not only aims at eliminating defects, but also seeks to reduce roughness and increase shine on the metal surface, obtaining a metal piece with a mirror effect while maintaining its geometry to the maximum extent.
[0037] This mirror-effect part can be directly protected with a topcoat layer to maintain the surface finish of the polished part, without the need for an anodizing step.
[0038] The process of polishing the metal part to obtain the mirror effect in aluminum with a PCR and / or PIR percentage above 8%, machined aluminum, steel or other types of materials, the process of the invention provides different techniques depending on the material and the shape of the part.
[0039] For example, a metal part can be polished using a mechanical process using discs made of materials such as cotton or flannel and polishing and buffing pastes with different compositions, preferably alumina-based. Mechanical polishing allows for high-gloss finishes, as well as more uniform finishes and, therefore, better surface quality.
[0040] Mechanical polishing is an efficient technology for removing various types of surface defects thanks to the use of various combinations of cloths / discs with polishing pastes applied to the workpiece at appropriate angles and speeds.
[0041] In mechanical polishing, the subsequent stage of mechanical polishing, it is important to define special protocols so that this shine is uniform throughout the piece, maintaining a roughness range within certain numbers and an equally uniform reflectance range - reflectance is preferably from 50%.
[0042] Mechanical polishing provides a high-gloss, mirror-like finish that, depending on the technique and protocols used, is also sensitive to scratches and handling marks, as well as resistant to oxidation.
[0043] The mechanical polishing process can be performed manually or with automatic machines tailored to the desired production level. The parameters of the mechanical polishing and polishing machine are also important for achieving the final result. After mechanical polishing, the surface is smooth. Eventually, a mechanical polishing process is performed after polishing to achieve the highest possible shine.
[0044] It is also possible to polish a metal part through a chemical or electrochemical process using an electrolyte. In the European Union, there is a general trend in industry to eliminate mechanical polishing from industrial processes that are generally low-yield and to promote more industrial processes with high production capacity. The mechanical polishing process can be replaced by chemical or electrochemical polishing and polishing. However, there are certain materials, such as recycled aluminum (generally with more than 20% PCR and / or PIR), that when polished and polished using a standard chemical or electrochemical process, become dull and the gloss effect is not achieved.
[0045] Sometimes, it is difficult to achieve a high gloss level with some materials using a standard mechanical polishing process. Furthermore, some parts with certain complex shapes, such as decorations or textures, and the concave areas of the parts to be polished, are difficult to polish using mechanical processes. Electrochemical polishing of these types of complex parts, for example, using sulfuric and phosphoric acid, achieves a high gloss while also eliminating mechanical polishing marks such as disc lines, shadows, and metal defects. In electrochemical polishing, the part is introduced into an electrolyte, preferably at a high temperature (over 60°C) and with constant movement, and by applying current between the part to be polished and the electrolyte, an electrochemical reaction occurs that manages to reduce the roughness of the material by removing material from the peaks on the surface, resulting in a substrate with less roughness and therefore smoother.
[0046] It is difficult to achieve a mirror-like finish on some parts made of certain metals or containing specific shapes using standard mechanical or electrochemical polishing. Furthermore, some decorations (deep textures and logos) and shapes can be difficult or impossible to polish and varnish for effective protection. Therefore, there is a need to identify technologies that allow a fine metallic finish to provide this uniformity and high gloss. This metallic finish is intended to have an effect similar to anodizing and provides strength and good adhesion.
[0047] In this regard, there are other methods for making aluminum parts shine, such as a thin metallic coating applied through a vacuum process, metallization, or electroplating.
[0048] The process of fine metal coating an aluminum metal part using a vacuum plating process (PVD) allows the part to be coated with a protective and decorative layer. For example, an aluminum part can be coated with PVD using Al 5657 and Al 6082 alloys to achieve a thin metallic layer that maintains a low surface roughness and a mirror-like metallic finish. PVD allows for a wide variety of colors and proper adhesion to aluminum and other metals. The metallization process is generally used to treat non-conductive materials and solely as a coating. However, the metallization process is also applied to metal parts. For example, zinc parts are commonly treated with metallization. Metallization allows for a variety of colors depending on the final process. Metallization allows for the adhesion of aluminum and other metals.
[0049] The electroplating process is advantageous for treating some metals, as it provides extra thickness to the metal layer and provides physical strength while providing a good coating of the entire surface, even when textured.
[0050] Once a metal part has a shiny metallic surface, preferably with a mirror effect, it tends to be less resistant to mechanical and chemical attacks. For this reason, it is advantageous to apply a protective coating that maintains the shiny appearance of the part's surface and preferably achieves a color similar to that obtained through an anodizing process.
[0051] There are different coatings available depending on the needs of the resulting piece to be obtained.
[0052] In one embodiment, the step of applying a topcoat layer comprises a varnishing (VA) process. The varnishing process deposits one or more layers of varnish onto the surface of the metal part, protecting the metal surface while maintaining its appearance. The varnishing process produces a metal part with a color similar to that obtained through an anodizing process. The varnishing process, in one embodiment, has at least two stages:
[0053] 1) Primer: Improves adhesion and durability. Also provides a smoother finish. Can be colored or uncolored.
[0054] 2) Stage of application of the final layer (Top coat): Transparent layer that acts as a protective barrier and provides mechanical and chemical resistance.
[0055] In a specific embodiment, the process of applying a final coating layer after polishing and / or shining comprises a phase of cleaning the piece, a flaming phase, a phase of applying the primer to improve adhesion to the metal substrate and finally a phase of applying the final coating, such as varnish or lacquer.
[0056] Various types of coatings, such as lacquers and varnishes, can be used in the final coating application stage, depending on the metal, the shape of the piece, the presence of texturing or engraving, and the customer's requirements. For example, there are lacquers or varnishes that can change the color of the metal part. There are also lacquers or varnishes that can change the texture of the metal part. There are also lacquers and varnishes with different levels of sustainability that allow compliance with the various existing sustainability regulations.
[0057] In one embodiment, and especially when the final coating layer comprises a UV or Pll type lacquer or varnish, such as a varnish based on polyurethane resins, it is advantageous to perform a drying step for the lacquer or varnish. In a more specific embodiment, the drying step is preferably carried out using ultraviolet (UV) radiation and / or infrared radiation, which allows the varnish layer applied to the surface of the part to dry and cure rapidly. In summary, the decorative, protective, and / or functional process of the invention for a metal part for perfumery and cosmetics packaging or other uses aims to avoid the use of the traditional anodizing system.
[0058] To this end, the decorative, protective and / or functional process of the piece after its shaping, especially when it is an aluminum piece, preferably comprises a polishing and / or brightening phase of the aluminum, which may be mechanical, chemical or electrochemical in such a way that it allows achieving the high gloss finish, or mirror effect and a step of applying a final coating layer to maintain the surface finish of the polished piece, without the need for an anodizing step. Preferably, the final coating layer is a thin layer of transparent lacquer, with or without color, achieving an appearance similar to anodization.
[0059] Optionally, the decorative, protective and / or functional process of the piece includes a degreasing and washing stage to eliminate any residue of fatty products applied during the manufacturing process stages.
[0060] The advantages of the decorative, protective and / or functional process of the metal part of the invention are multiple, especially highlighting its sustainable nature.
