Abstract
Description
[0001] Title: Insecticidal mixtures of pyriproxyfen
[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The invention relates to a novel ternary insecticidal combination comprising: (i) an amount of pyriproxyfen, (ii) an amount of pyrethroid, and (iii) an amount of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor competitive (nAChR) modulator.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] Stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are insect pests which cause serious damage to many agricultural crops by using their sharp mouthparts to pierce and suck plant parts, especially in crops such as soybean, corn, cotton, and tomato. The stink bug populations in Brazil have become increasingly dispersed and hard to control, causing severe economic losses to growers across the country.
[0006] The most abundant species of stink bugs in nature include Euschistus (brown stink bugs), Dichelops (green-belly stink bugs), Nezara viridula (southern green stink bug) and Piezodorus guildinii (redbanded stink bug).
[0007] The stink bug life cycle consists of three stages - egg, nymph and adult. The eggs hatch into the nymph stage. These immature nymphs have the same color and shape as the adults but are much smaller. To grow larger, each nymph must shed its outer covering in order to make room for their larger body. This process is known as "molting." Stink bug nymphs molt as many as five times before they reach adulthood. Each period of the molting process is called an "instar".
[0008] Sting bugs are challenging insect to manage since both nymphs and adults damage crops. Moreover, the adults have a tough exoskeleton covered with a waxy, water-repellant cuticle that can help protect them from pesticide applications and enable them to easily invade previously treated areas. Theoretically adults can fly more than 70 miles per day and the nymphs, which are wingless, are relatively mobile due to strong walking capacity (Wiman et al. 2014; Lee and Leskey 2015). Neonicotinoids (IRAC sub-group 4A), organophosphates (IRAC sub-group IB), carbamates (IRAC sub-group 1A) and pyrethroids (IRAC sub-group 3A) insecticides currently represent the main control strategy for this pest; sometimes sub-group 4A and 3A are mixed in order to enhance control efficacy and / or sub-groups IB, 4A and 3A are rotated as a part of a program designed to prevent resistance development. Each of these chemical groups is characterized by a different mode of action within the insect however, they all act on the insect central nervous system.
[0009] Currently there are few effective insecticides that are labeled for use against Stink bugs therefore, additional products which achieve effective control are needed.

[0316] BIOLOGICAL EXAMPLES
[0317] ABBOTT formula was used to assess the % efficacy relative to the untreated control. The formula of ABBOTT (1925) was used: % efficacy = (T-t)*100 / T, where "T" is the number of live stinkbugs in the control, and "t" is the live stinkbugs in the treatments. The treatments were submitted to analysis of variance and the means were compared by the Scott-Knott test at 5% significance through the RStudio program present within the ARM® system of GDM Solutions.
[0318] A synergistic effect exists whenever the action of an active ingredient combination is greater than the sum of the actions of the individual components.
[0319] In the field of agriculture, it is often understood that the term "synergy" is as defined by Colby S. R. in an article entitled "Calculation of the synergistic and antagonistic responses of herbicide combinations" published in the journal Weeds, 1967, 15, p. 20-22. The action expected for a given combination of two active components can be calculated as follows: The action expected for a given combination of three active components can be calculated as follows:
[0320] XY+XZ+YZ XYZ
[0321] E = X+Y+Z - - + -
[0322] 100 10000 in which E represents the expected percentage of insecticidal control for the combination of the three insecticides at defined doses (for example equal to x, y and z respectively), X is the percentage of insecticidal control observed by the compound (I) at a defined dose (equal to x) , Y is the percentage of insecticidal control observed by the compound (II) at a defined dose (equal to y) , Z is the percentage of insecticidal control observed by the compound (III) at a defined dose (equal to z). When the percentage of insecticidal control observed for the combination is greater than the expected percentage, there is a synergistic effect.
[0323] Experiments were carried out to determine the synergistic insecticidal effect of the ternary insecticidal composition which comprises a mixture of pyriproxyfen, a pyrethroid compound and an nAChR competitive modulator compound.
[0324] Combinations of pyriproxyfen, bifenthrin and sulfoxaflor:
[0325] Two Laboratory trials were conducted to evaluate the insecticidal control of brown stink bug (Euschistus heros) with pyriproxyfen, bifenthrin and sulfoxaflor, alone and in ternary mixture. The ternary mixture prepared by combining commercially available compositions of 25 g.ai / ha of pyriproxyfen (Tiger 100 EC), 16 g.ai / ha of bifenthrin (Seizer 100 EC) and 96 g.ai / ha of sulfoxaflor (Closer 240 SC). The products / mixtures were diluted with water to the stated relative field dose rates of the active compound. Experiment design was in random blocks with six repetitions. The spray volume of application was equivalent to 150 L / ha in both trials.
[0326] Example 1. Combinations of pyriproxyfen, pyrethroid and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) competitive modulator for control of adult brown stink bug in soybean.
[0327] To establish the type of interactions existing between pyriproxyfen, pyrethroid and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) competitive modulator in an in vitro efficacy evaluation assay, and their efficacy against adult brown stink bug was tested.
[0328] The number of dead adults was assessed 1-day post-application (DAA). Table 2. Control of adult brown stink bugs (Euschistus heros) in soybean
[0329] The number of dead nymphs was assessed 1-day post-application (DAA).
[0330] The expected percent of control was determined using the method of Colby S. R. as discussed above, and the Colby ratio (observed average / expected average) was calculated. When the percentage of insecticidal control observed for the combination is greater than the expected percentage (i.e., the Colby ratio is greater than 1), there is a synergistic effect.
[0331] Example 2. Combinations of pyriproxyfen, pyrethroid and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) competitive modulator for control of brown stink bug nymph in soybean.
[0332] To establish the type of interactions existing between pyriproxyfen, pyrethroid and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) competitive modulator in an in vitro efficacy evaluation assay, and their efficacy against brown stink bug nymphs was tested.
[0333] Table 3. Control of brown stink bug (Euschistus heros) nymphs in soybean
[0334] The expected percent of control was determined using the method of Colby S. R. as discussed above, and the Colby ratio (observed average / expected average) was calculated. When the percentage of insecticidal control observed for the combination is greater than the expected percentage (i.e., the Colby ratio is greater than 1), there is a synergistic effect.
[0335] Based on the results presented hereinabove, the ternary insecticidal composition which comprises a combination of pyriproxyfen, a pyrethroid and a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) competitive modulator was found to exhibit strong synergistic effects against brown stink bug from the family of Pentatomidae. Such combinations are suitable for controlling of said insects in a plant or in the environment in which such a plant is grown or stored, such as soil, storage containers, etc.
[0336] Example 3. Combinations of pyriproxyfen, pyrethroid and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) competitive modulator for control of brown stink bug nymphs and adults in soybean.
[0337] Laboratory trials were conducted to evaluate the insecticidal control of brown stink bug (Euschistus heros) with pyriproxyfen, bifenthrin and sulfoxaflor, alone, binary, and ternary mixtures. Two ternary mixture prepared by combining commercially available compositions of 0.5 g.ai / ha of pyriproxyfen (Tiger 100 EC), 0.85 g.ai / ha of bifenthrin (Seizer 100 EC) and 0.6 g.ai / ha of sulfoxaflor (Closer 240 SC) and of 1 g.ai / ha of pyriproxyfen (Tiger 100 EC), 1.7 g.ai / ha of bifenthrin (Seizer 100 EC) and 1.2 g.ai / ha of sulfoxaflor (Closer 240 SC). The ternary mixtures were diluted with water to prepare the spray solution diluted relative to field dose rates of the active compounds.
