Abstract
Description
[0001]A greenhouse and a method for growing plants and / or vegetables in a greenhouse The present invention relates to a greenhouse comprising: a floor arranged to support growing plants and / or vegetables; a substantially transparent roof extending at an angle to the floor, and having a bottom edge, a top edge and two side edges; side walls extending in vertical direction between the floor and the roof so as to enclose an interior space of the greenhouse. In a traditional greenhouse, cooling and dehumidification is often done by opening windows. Because it is usually windy outside, this may create an opposing wind in the greenhouse. On the leeward side the outside air comes in which is relatively cold and on the windward side the air exits which may be about 5 degrees warmer. The air has to be heated to compensate for the loss of heat. Furthermore, CO2exits through the windows, and unwanted insects may fly into the greenhouse. In general, bringing good air to the stomata is done by convection, which is mainly driven by heating at the bottom of the greenhouse. Traditional greenhouses are relatively high to have a large air buffer, which is expensive to build and maintain, and not a very nice sight in a landscape. In a semi-closed greenhouse, climate is generally controlled by mixing air from outside with air from the greenhouse and heating, cooling, humidifying or dehumidifying as necessary. If it is necessary to dehumidify the air (as plants grow they evaporate water), this may be done by mixing in drier outside air. Air must therefore also be removed, which results in heating costs and CO2losses. The introduced air may be blown into long hoses with small holes by large fans, whereby said air is directed towards the plants, sometimes at the top of the greenhouse, but usually under the plants. The latter gives the best grip on the climate at the stomata of the plants. Semi-closed greenhouses regularly may produce 50% more growth than traditional greenhouses. Both of the above systems are based on large climate zones, where there is one single set point for temperature (T) and humidity (RH), which is a compromise for all the plants in the greenhouse, and the climate is not optimal at the stomata of the individual plants. According to a first aspect of the invention: a substantially transparent inner roof is provided parallel to and at a distance from the roof, thereby providing an air gap between the roof and the inner roof; an inlet opening is provided in the inner roof near the top edge of the roof, such that, during use, moist air which rises from the plants and / or vegetables to the top of the interior space of the greenhouse is allowed to flow into the upper part of the air gap between the roof and the inner roof; an outlet opening is provided near the floor, such that said air is allowed to flow from the lower part of the air gap between the roof and the inner roof back into the interior space of the greenhouse; a water collecting device is provided under the air gap between the roof and the inner roof, such that, during use, condensed water which is formed in the air gap flows into the water collecting device; and a water guiding device is provided between the water collecting device and the floor, such that, during use, condensed water which is formed in the air gap and which is collected in the water collecting device is fed to said plants and / or vegetables. If the outside climate is colder than inside climate, this will cause condensation of the moist air in the gap against the roof. This causes less, but also more diffused, light in the greenhouse. If the roof is sloped at a sufficiently large angle, the condensed droplets will flow downwards. The condensed water is given to the plants again, and cooling and dehumidifying the air is automatically achieved to maintain the climate in order. On hot days, (additional) cooling and dehumidification can be done by the climate unit. The flow of air through the air gap may be caused by natural convection, or may be forced by mechanical fans if necessary. On the other hand, by blocking the flow of air, for instance by closing the openings, the air gap may act as a heat insulation shield, and thereby heating costs may be saved, for instance on very cold winter days, or during the nights when the plants are inactive and it is relatively cold. Preferably, means are provided to distribute the air from said outlet opening of the air gap near the floor to locations under the growing plants. This promotes an even distribution of the air in the greenhouse and promotes a healthy grow of the plants as the air rises up around the plants. These air distribution means may be provided a container as in the ebb-flow plant growth system as described in EP-A-3692785, or may for instance be provided by a pipe system with air outlets located under the plants. Preferably, the greenhouse comprises a plurality of greenhouse units, wherein each greenhouse unit comprises a floor panel, a substantially transparent roof panel panel extending at said angle to and from the floor panel, and a substantially transparent inner roof panel which is provided parallel to and at said distance from the roof panel, and wherein said floor panels form said floor, said roof panels form said roof, and said inner foor panels form said inner roof. Preferably, the angle between the roof and the floor is between 10⁰ and 45⁰, preferably between 15⁰ and 30⁰. Preferably, the roof and the inner roof are each formed by one or more glass pannels mounted in a frame. According to an especially preferred embodiment, said air flowing into the upper part of the air gap between the roof and the inner roof, and from the lower part of the air gap between the roof and the inner roof back into the interior space of the greenhouse allows a continuous air circulation in the greenhouse around an circulation axis which is parallel to the bottom edge of the roof; and a multitude of spaced apart climate control units is arranged in the greenhouse along a virtual line which is parallel to the bottom edge of the roof, wherin each respective climate control unit is arranged to be able to be set to maintain a respective different desired climate in the space between the floor and the roof at the location of said respective climate control unit. The present invention will now be illustrated with reference to the drawing where Fig. 1 is a partial perspective view of a greenhouse system; Fig. 2A is a cross section of the greenhouse system of Fig. 1; Fig. 2B is a detailed cross section of a greenhouse unit of the greenhouse system of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the greenhouse system of Fig. 1. According to the figures a greenhouse system comprises a plurality of greenhouse units 101 which form a closed greenhouse 100. A multitude of greenhouses 100 may extend in parallel next to each other. As shown in Fig. 2B, each greenhouse unit 101 comprises a horizontal bottom floor panel 102, an upright side wall panel 103 extending from one side edge of the floor panel 102, and a substantially transparent roof panel 104 extending from the upper edge of the side wall 103 upward at an angle with the floor panel 102. The substantially transparent roof panel 104 comprise a glass panel in a metal frame. The outer edge of the roof panel 104 which forms the top of the greenhouse extends vertically above the outer edge of the floor panel 102 which forms the centre line of the floor of the greenhouse. The floor panels 102 may have a length of for instance 4 m and a width of for instance 2 m. A container 107 for plants can be placed on top of each floor panel 102. A path may be provided between the containers 107 on the centre line of the floor. The container 107 may be a container for an ebb-flow plant growth system as described in EP-A-3692785, which is incorporated herein in its entirety by reference. As shown in Fig. 2A, the side wall panels 103 with the roof panels 104 are supported by a first supporting frame 105 and the floor panels 102 with the containers 107 are supported by a second supporting frame 106. Each pair of two greenhouse units 101 is placed in a mirrored fashion with the free edges of the floor panel 102 and the roof panel 104 against each other, such that a closed circumferential wall is formed, as seen in Fig. 2A. A multitude of pairs of greenhouse units 101 is placed against each other side by side so as to form a tunnel shaped greenhouse 100, as shown in Fig. 1. The outer end walls of the so formed tunnel shaped greenhouse 100 are closed by end wall panels (not shown), so as to form a single enclosed space, which is closed of from the environment around the greenhouse 100 in a substantially airtight and vapour tight manner. Provisions may be made, however, to temporarily allow air in and out of the greenhouse 100, and to allow movement of (containers 107 with) plants in and out of the greenhouse 100. To that end the roof panels 104 may be hingeable and / or removable, and / or hatches / doors may be provided in the roof panels 104, the side wall panels 103 and / or the end wall panels. Furthermore, provisions may be made to temporarily supply water to the greenhouse 100, and / or to temporarily remove water or moist from the greenhouse. According to a preferred embodiment the greenhouse units 101 are designed to extract moist from the air above (the containers 107 with) the plants, to collect said extrazcted moist in the form of liquid water, and to supply said water to (the containers 107 with) the plants for watering the plants, in a closed loop. To that end a transparent inner roof panel 104a is mounted parallel to and at a distance from the roof panel 104, covering substantially the entire surface of the roof panel 104, which leaves an air gap between the roof panel 104 and the inner roof panel 104a. The inner roof panel 104a may be a glass panel. At or near the ridge of the roof panel 104 an opening or gap 104b is provided in the inner roof panel 104a or, as shown, between two adjacent inner roof panels 104a of each pair of greenhouse units 101, allowing air from inside the greenhouse 100 to flow into the air gap between the roof panel 104 and the inner roof panel 104a. The wall panel 103 is provided with an inner wall panel 103a, which extends down from the lower edge of the inner panel 104a, and which also leaves an air gap between the wall panel 103 and the inner wall panel 103a which is in communication with the air gap between the roof panel 104 and the inner roof panel 104a. As can be seen in Fig. 3, seen from the side of the greenhouse, the air gap of the upright wall has funnel shaped side walls 110 narrowing to a relatively narrow bottom opening which forms an air and water outlet into the top opening of a water collector 108 in the lower part of the upright wall. The water collector 108 is provided with an opening for letting air, arriving from the airgap, back into the greenhouse. The air may be fed to the bottom of the containers 107, under the growing plants, or (if no containers are used) may be realesed under the plants by other means, such as a pipe system with air outlets located under the plants. A conduit 109 is provided between the bottom of the water collector 108 and the container 107 for feeding water collected in the water collector 108, in order to water the plants. During use, a circular airflow will be generated by natural convection or other mechanical means, which leads the relatively warm and humid air from the plants through the opening 104b near the ridge of the greenhouse 100 and through the airgap between the roof panel 104 and the inner roof panel 104a. This will cause the air to dehumidfy and moist to condensate against the relatively cold surface of the roof panel 104 to form water droplets, which will eventually flow downward through the air gap along the surfaces of the roof panel 104 and / or the inner roof panel 104a, to be collected in the water collector 108. The so dehumidified air will flow back from the airgap into the greenhouse 100. The natural convection in this manner causes a continous circular air flow around horizontal two parallel axes which extend in the length direction of the greenhouse tunnel. This prevents mixing of air in the length direction of the greenhouse tunnel and allows for maintaining different climates in different zones of the greenhouse tunnel, without using separating walls between each zone. In a preferred embodiment each greenhouse unit 101, or each pair of greenhouse units 101, is additionally provided with separate means which are arranged to locally maintain a respective desired climate in the space between the bottom panel(s) 102 and the roof panel(s) 104 of said greenhouse unit or pair of greenhouse units 100. Said means are well known in the art and may comprise on the one hand temperature sensors, humidity sensors, CO2sensors, and on the other hand valves for controlling the water supply to (the container 107 with) the plants, blinds to shut of sunlight coming through the roof panel 104, heating elements, fans, and / or air conditioning means, which are connected by means of an electronic controller.
