Description

Electronic devices containing cables

[0001] The various embodiments disclosed in this document relate to electronic devices, and more particularly to electronic devices including cables.

[0002] Electronic devices include a circuit board, which provides placement space and circuit wiring for electrical connections to electrical components such as integrated circuits, passive components, sensors, and connecting cables. The electrical components are either placed directly on the surface of the circuit board or electrically connected to the circuit board via cables.

[0003] Electronic devices may contain cables, such as coaxial cables or flat cables (e.g., flexible flat cables (FFCs) implemented as flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs),) to transmit signals or supply power. Flat cables are widely used due to their thinness and flexibility, which facilitates the miniaturization of electronic devices. Flexible cables can be electrically connected to circuit boards via connectors.

[0004] When an electronic device is subjected to external shock, the vibration of internal components can cause tensile stress in the cable. This tensile stress can lead to connector detachment or damage, potentially resulting in failure. While some slack can be added to the cable to reduce tensile stress, cables longer than the shortest distance between connectors can experience irregular bending due to buckling. This bending can negatively impact the appearance and feel of the electronic device.

[0005] Various embodiments disclosed in this document can provide an electronic device that reduces the risk of connector separation and breakage and reduces irregular buckling of a cable.

[0006] According to one aspect of the present disclosure, an electronic device includes a printed circuit board and a flat cable having one end electrically connected to the printed circuit board. The flat cable includes a cable connector positioned at the one end and coupled to the printed circuit board. The flat cable includes a curved portion having a curved shape. The flat cable includes an elastic bracket having an elastic material, the elastic bracket being coupled to at least one of both ends of the curved portion and configured to apply an elastic contractive force in a direction in which the both ends of the curved portion come closer to each other.

[0007] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the electronic device may include a plurality of components having different sizes arranged inside the electronic device. The electronic device may further include a step formed by a difference in size of the components, and the curved portion of the flat cable may overlap the step formed by the difference in size of the components.

[0008] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the curved portion may have a U-shape.

[0009] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the elastic bracket may include an elastic portion configured to be elastic in the direction of a tensile force applied to the flat cable and at least one fixed portion fixed to at least one end of the curved portion of the flat cable.

[0010] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the at least one fixing member may include an adhesive member on one surface of the at least one fixing member and be attached to a surface of the flat cable.

[0011] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the elastic member may be formed such that a cross-sectional area of the elastic member is reduced compared to a cross-sectional area of the at least one fixed member with respect to the direction of a tensile force applied to the flat cable.

[0012] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the elastic member may include a cut-out formed by cutting off a portion of a surface of the elastic member.

[0013] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the elastic contraction force may be based on the number and arrangement spacing of the cut holes.

[0014] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the at least one fixed member includes a lateral extension extending in the width direction of the flat cable, the lateral extension being foldable to at least partially wrap around the flat cable.

[0015] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the flat cable further includes a fixing groove formed by reducing the width in an area corresponding to the lateral extension, wherein the lateral extension can be positioned within the fixing groove.

[0016] According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a flat cable of an electronic device includes a printed circuit board and a flat cable electrically connected to the printed circuit board, the flat cable including a cable connector positioned at one end of the flat cable and coupled to the printed circuit board, a curved portion having a curved shape, and an elastic bracket having an elastic material, the elastic bracket being coupled to at least one of both ends of the curved portion and configured to apply an elastic contractive force in a direction in which the both ends of the curved portion come closer to each other.

[0017] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the at least one fixing member may include an adhesive member on one surface of the at least one fixing member and be attached to a surface of the flat cable.

[0018] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the elastic member may be formed such that a cross-sectional area of the elastic member is reduced compared to a cross-sectional area of the at least one fixed member with respect to the direction of a tensile force applied to the flat cable.

[0019] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the elastic member may include a cut-out formed by cutting off a portion of a surface of the elastic member.

[0020] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the elastic contraction force may be based on the number and arrangement spacing of the cut holes.

[0021] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the at least one fixed member includes a lateral extension extending in the width direction of the flat cable, the lateral extension being foldable to at least partially wrap around the flat cable.

[0022] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the flat cable further includes a fixing groove formed by reducing the width in an area corresponding to the lateral extension, wherein the lateral extension can be positioned within the fixing groove.

[0023] According to various embodiments disclosed in this document, the bend formed in the cable can be expanded in response to an external tensile force applied to the cable, thereby reducing the risk of separation or breakage of the cable connector, and the elastic bracket can be pulled by applying a tensile force to the bend, thereby reducing the deterioration of the appearance and feel of the electronic device due to irregular buckling caused by the extra length of the cable.

[0090] Figure 4b is an enlarged view of area A of Figure 4a, and Figure 4c is a cross-sectional view along the BB direction of Figure 4a.

[0091] Referring to FIGS. 4A to 4C, an electronic device (400) (e.g., the electronic device (101) of FIG. 1, the electronic device (200) of FIGS. 2A and 2B, and the electronic device (300) of FIG. 3) may include a printed circuit board (401) (e.g., the first printed circuit board (320) of FIG. 3) and a flat cable (410). The printed circuit board (401) may be a member on which electrical components, such as a processor (e.g., the processor (120) of FIG. 1) and a memory (e.g., the memory (130) of FIG. 1) of the electronic device (400) are arranged and electrically interconnected.

[0092] In one or more embodiments, the flat cable (410) may be a component that electrically connects a display (e.g., display (201) of FIG. 2A), a camera module (403) (e.g., camera modules (205, 212, 213) of FIGS. 2A and 2B) and / or an auxiliary circuit board (401a) (e.g., second printed circuit board (340) of FIG. 3) of the electronic device (400) to the printed circuit board (401). In various embodiments, the flat cable (410) may include, for example, a ribbon cable, a flexible flat cable (410) (FFC), a flexible printed cable (FPC), and / or a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB).

[0093] In various embodiments, the flat cable (410) may include a cable connector (412) positioned at one end of the cable. The cable connector (412) may be a portion that is coupled to a component of the electronic device (400), such as a printed circuit board (401), to form an electrical connection. For example, a female connector (402) may be disposed on the printed circuit board (401), and the cable connector (412) may be coupled to the female connector (402). In various embodiments, the flat cable (410) may extend onto one side of an internal component of the electronic device (400), such as a battery (405), that is spaced apart from the printed circuit board (401) within the electronic device (400).

[0094] Referring to FIGS. 4C to 4E, a flat cable (410) according to various embodiments may include a curved portion (411) and an elastic bracket (420). The curved portion (411) may be a portion formed by bending a portion of the flat cable (410). For example, the curved portion (411) may be formed by shaping a portion of the flat cable (410) to be recessed in a U shape from one side of the flat cable (410).

[0095] In one or more embodiments, the elastic bracket (420) may be a member that is coupled to at least one of the two ends of the curved portion (411) and applies an elastic contractive force. In various embodiments, as illustrated in FIG. 4C, the elastic bracket (420) may be coupled to both ends of the curved portion (411) and may apply an elastic contractive force in a direction in which the two ends come closer to each other. The elastic bracket (420) may be a member that includes an elastic material that provides elasticity. The elastic bracket (420) may be, for example, a plate-shaped or film-shaped member formed of the elastic material described above. The elastic bracket (420) may be a member that is coupled to one surface of the flat cable (410) at both ends of the curved portion (411) and applies an elastic contractive force in a direction in which the two ends of the curved portion (411) come closer. The elastic bracket (420) may be coupled to the surface of the flat cable (410) using various fixing means, such as an adhesive or an adhesive tape. For example, as illustrated in FIG. 4c, one end of the elastic bracket (420) may be fixed on a first surface of the flat cable (410), and the other end of the elastic bracket (420) may be fixed on a second surface of the flat cable (420). The first surface may be located at one of the two ends of the curved portion (411), and the second surface may be located at the other of the two ends of the curved portion (411). In addition, referring to FIG. 4e, the elastic bracket (420) according to various embodiments may be disposed on one end of the curved portion (411) (e.g., an end located on the opposite side of the cable connector (412) with respect to the curved portion) and one surface of the cable connector (412) (e.g., an upper surface of the cable connector (412). For example, the elastic bracket (420) may be bonded to one surface of the cable connector (412) (e.g., the upper surface of the cable connector (412)) by a fixing means such as an adhesive or adhesive tape.

[0096] Referring back to FIG. 4C, the electronic device (400) according to various embodiments may include a step (S) formed internally. The step (S) may be formed by a size difference between internal components of the electronic device (400). For example, the step (S) may be formed by a difference in height (e.g., size in the -z direction) between the battery (405) and the frame (406). In various embodiments, the curved portion (411) of the flat cable (410) may be formed in an area overlapping the step (S). For example, a portion of the flat cable (410) overlapping the step (S) may be recessed into a U-shape into a groove formed by the step (S). By positioning the curved portion (411) in the groove formed by the step (S), the internal space of the electronic device (400) may be efficiently used.

[0097] FIG. 5a is an upper and lower plan view showing an elastic bracket (420) according to various embodiments.

[0098] FIG. 5b is a top and bottom plan view showing an elastic bracket (420) according to various embodiments.

[0099] FIG. 5c is a top and bottom plan view showing an elastic bracket (420) according to various embodiments.

[0100] Referring to FIG. 5A, the elastic bracket (420) may include an elastic portion (423) and a fixed portion (421). The elastic portion (423) may be a portion that is elongated in the length or width direction by a tensile force applied to the flat cable (410) and generates a contraction force by elasticity. The fixed portion (421) may be a portion that is fixed to the flat cable (410) (e.g., at least one of both ends of the curved portion (411) of the flat cable (410).

[0101] In various embodiments, the elastic bracket (420) may include various elastic materials, such as rubber, latex, polyisoprene, NBR, SBR, EPDM, and / or silicone. The elastic bracket (420) may be a plate-shaped or film-shaped member formed of the elastic material. A coupling means for coupling to the flat cable (410) may be provided on one surface (e.g., the lower surface) of the fixing portion (421). For example, an adhesive member (422) (e.g., a double-sided adhesive tape or an applied adhesive) may be positioned on one surface of the fixing portion (421).

[0102] Referring to FIG. 5b, the cross-section of the elastic bracket (420) may be reduced compared to the fixed portion (421). For example, both shoulder portions of the elastic portion (423) may be recessed, the thickness of the elastic portion (423) may be reduced compared to the fixed portion (421), or a portion of the surface of the elastic portion (423) may be cut off. In various embodiments, a cut-out (424) may be formed in the elastic portion (423). The cut-out (424) may be a portion formed by cutting off a portion of the surface of the elastic portion (423). The corners of the cut-out (424) may be rounded to prevent tearing of the elastic portion (423) due to stress concentration.

[0103] Since the cross-section of the elastic portion (423) is reduced compared to the fixed portion (421), when tensile force is applied to the flat cable (410) and the elastic bracket (420) is elongated, the deformation is concentrated on the elastic portion (423), and the deformation of the fixed portion (421) can be reduced. When the elastic deformation of the fixed portion (421) is repeated, there is a risk that the adhesive strength of the adhesive member (422) located at the fixed portion (421) may be reduced. Therefore, since the elastic portion (423) has a cross-section reduction structure such as a cut-out (424), the deterioration of the adhesive strength of the adhesive member (422) due to the elongation of the fixed portion (421) can be reduced.

[0104] Referring to FIG. 5c, the number (N1) and the spacing (W1) of the cut holes (424) formed in the elastic portion (423) can be set so that the elastic portion (423) has an appropriate elastic contraction force. For example, the elastic contraction force of the elastic portion (423) can be determined by the number (N1) and the spacing (W1) of the cut holes (424). As described below, since the elastic contraction force or rigidity of the elastic portion (423) must be maintained within an appropriate range, the number (N1) and the spacing (W1) of the cut holes (424) of the elastic portion (423) can be adjusted within an appropriate range.

[0105] FIGS. 6A and 6B are cross-sectional perspective views and plan views showing the operation of a flat cable (410) of an electronic device (400) according to various embodiments of the present invention.

[0106] Referring to FIGS. 6A and 6B, the curved portion (411) of the flat cable (410) can be at least partially straightened according to the tensile force applied to the flat cable (410). The elastic bracket (420) can be elongated according to the straightening of the curved portion (411) by the tensile force, and can apply an elastic contractive force in a direction in which both ends of the curved portion (411) come closer. The elastic portion (423) can be elongated (E1) in one direction by the tensile force (T1) applied to the flat cable. Therefore, the elastic bracket (420) can apply a contractive force to both ends of the curved portion (411) by elasticity. When the tensile force (T1) is released, the curved portion (411) can return to a bent state again by the contractive force applied by the elastic bracket (420).

[0107] In one or more embodiments, a tensile force (T1) may be applied to the flat cable (410) during assembly and / or use of the electronic device (400). For example, when an external shock or vibration is applied to the electronic device (400), internal components such as the battery (405) may move, thereby pulling the flat cable (410) extending toward the surface of the battery (405). In various embodiments, the cause of the tensile force (T1) may be a haptic effect resulting from the use of one or more applications of the electronic device (400). As the flat cable (410) is pulled as described above, there is a risk that the cable connector (412) may be separated and / or damaged. According to the present invention, since one area of the flat cable (410) is bent to form a curved portion (411), when tensile force is applied to the flat cable (410), the curved portion (411) is at least partially straightened, thereby advantageously reducing the risk of the cable connector (412) being separated or damaged.

[0108] In addition, in one or more embodiments, when a bend (411) is formed in the flat cable (410), the length of the flat cable (410) increases compared to the shortest distance, so that when no tensile force is applied, there is a risk that the flat cable (410) may buckle or rise, thereby pressuring the outer plate (e.g., the rear plate (211) of FIG. 2B) of the electronic device (400), causing the outer plate to rise or fall off. Therefore, the elastic bracket (420) can advantageously reduce or prevent buckling of the flat cable (410) by applying an elastic contractive force to both ends of the bend (411) to pull it.

[0109] In various embodiments, the compressive force of the elastic bracket (420) may be set to have a lower value than the tensile force threshold applied to the flat cable (410) that causes separation or breakage of the cable connector (412). For example, the number (N1) and the spacing (W1) of the cut-out holes (424) of the elastic bracket (420) in FIG. 5c may be set such that the tensile force of the elastic portion (423) has the above-described value. By having a value within the above-described range, the risk of the cable connector (412) being pulled and separated or broken by the compressive force of the elastic bracket (420) can be advantageously reduced. In addition, the tensile stiffness of the elastic bracket (420) may be set to have a higher value than the compressive stiffness of the curved portion (411) so that the curved portion (411) can return to its original bent state by the tensile force of the elastic bracket (420).

[0110] FIG. 7a is an upper and lower plan view showing an elastic bracket (420) according to various embodiments of the present invention.

[0111] FIG. 7b is a perspective view showing an elastic bracket (420) and a flat cable (410) according to various embodiments of the present invention.

[0112] FIG. 7c is a plan view showing a flat cable (410) according to various embodiments of the present invention.

[0116] Referring to FIGS. 7A and 7B, the fixing portion (421) of the elastic bracket (420) may include a lateral extension portion (425) extending in the width direction (e.g., the x direction and the -x direction in the drawing). A fixing means for fixing the lateral extension portion (425) to the flat cable (410) may be positioned on one side of the lateral extension portion (425). For example, an adhesive member (422) may extend to the lateral extension portion (425).

[0117] The lateral extension (425) of the elastic bracket (420) can at least partially wrap around the flat cable (410). For example, the lateral extension (425) can be folded to at least partially wrap around the perimeter of the flat cable (410). By wrapping and bonding the elastic bracket (420) around the perimeter of the flat cable (410), the fixing force of the elastic bracket (420) to the flat cable (410) can be improved compared to one or more embodiments in which the elastic bracket (420) is attached to one surface of the flat cable (410).

[0118] Referring to FIGS. 7c and 7d, the flat cable (410) may include a fixing groove (413) formed by reducing the width of an area corresponding to the fixing portion (421) (e.g., both ends of the curved portion (411) to which the fixing portion (421) is attached). For example, the fixing groove (413) may be formed by cutting off both shoulder portions of the flat cable (410).

[0119] In one or more embodiments, in various embodiments, the lateral extension (425) can be folded to span the fixing groove (413). For example, the lateral extension (425) can extend from a first side (e.g., an upper side) of the flat cable (410) through the fixing groove (413) and onto a second side of the flat cable (410) to be attached to the flat cable (410). The flat cable (410) includes the fixing groove (413), and the lateral extension (425) of the elastic bracket (420) can be firmly secured to the flat cable (410) by catching on the fixing groove (413).

[0120] Referring to FIGS. 7E and 7F, the flat cable (410) may include a fixing protrusion (414) formed by increasing the width of a portion of the flat cable (410) (e.g., both ends of the curved portion (411) to which the fixing portion (421) is attached) so that the fixing portion (421) is caught.

[0121] In various embodiments, the lateral extension (425) can be folded to catch on the fixing jaw (414). For example, the lateral extension (425) can extend from a first side (e.g., an upper side) of the flat cable (410) through one side of the fixing jaw (414) and onto a second side of the flat cable (410) to be attached to the flat cable (410). The flat cable (410) can include the fixing jaw (414) so that the lateral extension (425) of the elastic bracket (420) catches on the fixing jaw (414), thereby firmly securing the elastic bracket (420) and the flat cable (410).
