AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The activation delay for secondary cells (SCells) in new radio (NR) networks is significant, particularly for physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) SCells, due to the need for pathloss reference signal (PL-RS) measurement and channel state information (CSI) measurement, which can prolong the cell activation process.

Method used

A terminal device determines if a PL-RS of a PUCCH cell is maintained by checking for a valid timing advance (TA), and if so, skips unnecessary PL-RS measurements to expedite the cell activation procedure.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces the cell activation delay by eliminating the need for additional PL-RS measurements when the PL-RS is maintained, thereby improving the efficiency of PUCCH SCell activation.

Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to pathloss reference signal (PL-RS) maintenance for cell activation. In an aspect, a terminal device determines that a PL-R of a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) cell for the terminal device is maintained, in the event that the terminal device has a valid timing advance (TA) for transmitting on the PUCCH cell. The terminal device further performs a cell activation procedure for the PUCCH cell based on the determination that the PL-RS is maintained. As such, the PUCCH cell activation procedure can be performed with the assumption that the PL-RS of the PUCCH cell is maintained. In some embodiments, based on the determination that the PL-RS is maintained, the terminal device may skip unnecessary PL-RS measurement (s) during the cell activation procedure, thereby reducing the activation delay to transition from deactivated to activated status.

Description

PL-RS MAINTENANCE FOR CELL ACTIVATIONFIELD

[0001] Various example embodiments relate to the field of communication and in particular, to a device, a method, an apparatus and a computer readable storage medium for pathloss reference signal (PL-RS) maintenance for cell activation.BACKGROUND

[0002] In new radio (NR) , as in long term evolution (LTE) , a secondary cell (SCell) can be activated or deactivated by network to enable reasonable user equipment (UE) battery consumption when carrier aggregation (CA) is configured. However, when activating a SCell, it takes time, i.e., activation delay, to transition from deactivated to activated status, which is as defined in 3GPP TS 38.133. In some conditions, for example, for an unknown target SCell, the activation delay could become very long due to cell detection, layer 1 reference signal receiver power (L1-RSRP) measurement and channel state information (CSI) measurement, etc. Thus, further investigation of the cell activation procedure is needed for reducing the cell activation delay.SUMMARY

[0036] As mentioned above, when activating a SCell, it takes time, i.e., activation delay, to transition from the deactivated status to the activated status. One special case for the cell activation is physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) SCell activation. As the PUCCH is configured on the PUCCH SCell, and hence has uplink (UL) , the UE needs to additionally prepare for uplink transmissions when comparing with activating a downlink only SCell. A valid CSI report needs to be transmitted on the PUCCH SCell which is currently considered as an ending point of the (PUCCH) SCell activation.

[0037] To enable the UL transmissions on the PUCCH SCell, the UL transmit power needs to be determined based on the UE measuring the pathloss reference signal (PL-RS) from the PUCCH SCell being activated. In other words, conventionally the PL-RS measurement is needed for the PUCCH SCell activation procedure for determining the UL transmit power.

[0038] RAN4 has been discussing the PUCCH SCell activation delay requirement under the R17 work item (WI) . There was long debate in RAN4 if the PL-RS measurement would  introduce additional delay to PUCCH SCell activation. In RAN4#107, it was eventually agreed that at least 3 samples are needed for the PL-RS measurement to determine the UL transmit power for transmitting the CSI report.

[0039] Meanwhile, in R18 WI RP-220866 is approved in RAN#95e wherein one of the objectives is to reduce the SCell activation delay in FR2. Further, in RAN4#107, it was discussed if the agreed solutions are applicable to other cell activation scenarios. The PUCCH SCell activation was agreed in the scope of this R18 WI. This gives further room to optimize the PUCCH SCell activation procedure.

[0040] The PL-RS related requirement was introduced in RAN4 by specifying the PL-RS switch delay and transmission control indication (TCI) switch delay in 3GPP TS38.133. Taking the PL-RS switch delay as an example, the UE is expected to measure 5 samples of target PL-RS when it is not “maintained” by the UE, i.e., MN=1. Otherwise, it can directly apply the target PL-RS without additional PL-RS measurement when it is maintained, i.e., MN=0. This indicates that the UE is keeping monitoring the target PL-RS when it is maintained hence pathloss estimation can be done immediately and UL transmit power can be derived accordingly.

[0041] However, there is no clear definition on what is “PL-RS is maintained” . Although “PL-RS is maintained” has been defined in R4-3210136 as below, the definition discusses the PL-RS among “active” spatial relations which only applies to active serving cell.

[0042] As defined in R4-3210136, PL-RS is maintained provided:

[0043] - There are no more than 4 different RS activated as PL-RS per serving cell among all active spatial relations for PUSCH / PUCCH / SRS transmissions.

[0044] - The target pathloss reference signal remains detectable during TCI state switching period -SNR of the target pathloss reference signal≥-3dB

[0045] - The associated SSBs with the target pathloss reference signal remain detectable during the TCI state switching period.

[0046] - SNR of the associated SSB ≥-3dB.

[0047] Therefore, while the PUCCH SCell activation scenario is to be discussed in R18, it is expected to consider the case of PL-RS is maintained during the PUCCH SCell activation procedure and the exact definition of “PL-RS is maintained” needs to be provided.

[0048] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for  PL-RS maintenance for cell activation. In this solution, a terminal device determines that a PL-RS of a PUCCH cell for the terminal device is maintained, in the event that the terminal device has a valid timing advance (TA) for transmitting on the PUCCH cell. The terminal device further performs a cell activation procedure for the PUCCH cell based on the determination that the PL-RS is maintained.

[0049] In this way, the terminal device can determine that the PL-RS is maintained if there is a valid TA on the PUCCH cell and thereby perform the PUCCH cell activation procedure accordingly. In some embodiments, the terminal device may skip the PL-RS measurement (s) based on the determination that the PL-RS is maintained and thus reducing the cell activation delay.

[0050] Principles and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, it is to be noted that these embodiments are illustrated as examples and not intended to limit scope of the present application in any way.

[0051] Reference is first made to FIG. 1, which illustrates an example communication system 100 in which embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. In the communication system 100, a terminal device 110 is configured with carrier aggregation (CA) and in dual connectivity (DC) with a first network device 120 and a second network device 130. The terminal device 110 may be implemented as a UE (which may be also referred to as the UE 110 hereinafter) . The first network device 120 and the second network device 130 may be base stations for providing the terminal device 110 with radio coverage, such as, gNBs (which may be referred to as gNBs 120 and 130, or base stations 120 and 130) .

[0052] As shown in FIG. 1, the first network device 120 may provide and manage a master cell group (MCG) including a primary cell (PCell) 121. The PCell 121 may operate on a primary frequency, in which the terminal device 110 either performs the initial connection establishment procedure or initiates the connection re-establishment procedure. The PCell 121 may be assumed to be always activated.

[0053] The second network device 130 may provide and manage a secondary cell group (SCG) including a PSCell 131. For DC operations, the terminal device 110 may perform random access to the PSCell 131. Moreover, the PSCell 131 may be deactivated for the purpose of power saving and so on.

[0054] For each of the MCG and SCG, there may be one or more SCell, for example, SCells  122, 123 and 132 configured for providing additional radio resources to the terminal device 110. Among the SCells, there may be one SCell configured with PUCCH which is also named as PUCCH SCell. Similarly, the PSCell 131 may be also configured with PUCCH and may be named as PUCCH PSCell. It should be noted that the number of SCells in the MCG and SCG is given in illustrative purpose. Depending on network deployment, resource configuration, actual demand, etc., there may be more or less SCells in each of MCG and SCG.

[0055] The terminal device 110 may communicate with the first network device 120 and / or the second network device 130 on UL or downlink (DL) . In particular, the direction from the terminal device 110 to the first network device 120 and / or the second network device 130 refers to UL, and the direction from the first network device 120 and / or the second network device 130 to the terminal device 110 refers to DL.

[0056] Only for ease of discussion, the terminal device 110 is illustrated as a UE, and the first network device 120 and the second network device 130 are illustrated as base stations. However, the UE and base station are only given as example implementations of the terminal device 110, the first network device 120 and the second network device 130, respectively, without suggesting any limitation as to the scope of the present application. Any other suitable implementations are possible as well.

[0057] In the communication system 100, the terminal device 110 can determine that a PL-RS of a PUCCH cell, e.g., the SCell 122, 123, 132 or PSCell 131, for the terminal device 110 is maintained in the event that the terminal device 110 has a valid TA for transmitting on the PUCCH cell. The terminal device 110 can further perform a cell activation procedure for the PUCCH cell based on the determination that the PL-RS is maintained.

[0058] It is also to be understood that the number of the devices as shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. For example, the network 100 may include any suitable number of terminal devices and network devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0059] Communications in the communication system 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) and the fifth generation (5G) and on the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and  Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0060] Reference is now made to FIG. 2, which shows an example of a process 200 for cell activation according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1.

[0061] As illustrated in FIG. 2, a terminal device 201, a PCell 202 and a cell 203 (also referred to as cell1 203) may be involved in the process 200. The terminal device 201 may be an example of the terminal device 110 in FIG. 1 and the PCell 202 may be an example of the PCell 121 in FIG. 1. The cell 203 may be a cell configured with PUCCH for the terminal device 110 (also referred to as PUCCH cell 203) . In some embodiments, the PUCCH cell 203 may be a PUCCH SCell for the terminal device 110, i.e., the PUCCH cell 203 may be a SCell configured with PUCCH for the terminal device 110. Alternatively, the PUCCH cell 203 may be a PUCCH PSCell for the terminal device 110, i.e., the PUCCH cell 203 may be a PSCell configured with PUCCH for the terminal device 110. The PUCCH cell 203 may be an example of the SCell 122, 123, 132 or the PSCell 131 in FIG. 1. The PUCCH cell 203 may be allocated with a TA for the UL transmission on the PUCCH cell 203.

[0062] In the process 200, the terminal device 201 determines 210 that a PL-RS of the PUCCH cell 203 is maintained in the event that the terminal device 201 has a valid TA for transmitting on the PUCCH cell 203. The terminal device 201 further performs 220 a cell activation procedure for the PUCCH cell 203 based on the determination that the PL-RS is maintained.

[0063] Having a valid TA may mean that the UL timing is currently maintained and the UE could be triggered by some UL transmission on the PUCCH cell without first acquiring a TA value through a random access procedure. This may happen when the PUCCH cell has already been activated with the UL transmission earlier. Hence, the UL transmit power (derived based on the PL-RS) has been derived and the UE may determine that PL-RS is  maintained while the TA is valid.

[0064] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may determine that the PL-RS of the PUCCH cell 203 is maintained by determining that a TA timer (TAT) associated with the PUCCH cell 203 is running because the TA is considered to be valid while the TAT is running. Alternatively, the terminal device 201 may determine that the PL-RS of the PUCCH cell 203 is maintained by determining that the PL-RS is maintained in the event that a TAT associated with the PUCCH cell 203 has expired for a period shorter than a threshold period. In other words, even after the TAT expires, the terminal device 201 may determine that the PL-RS is maintained if the TAT has expired for a short period. The PL-RS determined as maintained may be any of the PL-RS that has been measured or used for the UL transmission while TAT is running. In some embodiments, the PL-RS may be the reference signal used for UL transmission, e.g., the latest UL transmission on the PUCCH SCell before receiving the cell activation command.

[0065] Additionally, the terminal device 201 may determine whether the PL-RS is maintained based on validity of the PL-RS. The terminal device 201 may determine that the PL-RS of the PUCCH cell 203 is maintained by determining that the PL-RS used for UL transmission is valid when receiving a cell activation command for activating the PUCCH cell 203 or during the cell activation delay. In some embodiments, if the PL-RS used for the UL transmission remains detectable or the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of PL-RS used for the UL transmission keeps above a threshold during the cell activation procedure for the PUCCH cell 203, the terminal device 201 may determine that the PL-RS is still valid and thus is maintained. For example, the definition of “PL-RS is maintained” may apply when the PL-RS used at the reception of the last TA command (or at the time when TAT is triggered) remains detectable during the PUCCH cell activation. This may ensure that the PL-RS used for the UL transmission on the PUCCH cell is still valid and can be used for this PUCCH cell activation.

[0066] In some embodiments, “PL-RS is maintained” can be defined as follows. For PUCCH SCell activation, PL-RS is maintained provided that one or more of the following conditions are satisfied. One condition may be that the UE has a valid TA for transmitting on the PUCCH SCell. Another condition may be that the target pathloss reference signal used for last UL transmission is still valid when receiving the SCell activation command. The conditions may be used separately or in combination to determine PL-RS is maintained for PUCCH SCell activation.

[0067] Based on the determination that the PL-RS is maintained, the terminal device 201 may perform 220 the cell activation procedure for the PUCCH cell 203 accordingly. In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may perform 220 the cell activation procedure without unnecessary PL-RS measurement (s) on the PUCCH cell 203. Specifically, the terminal device 201 may skip at least one PL-RS measurement for the cell activation procedure and apply a determined pathloss estimation associated with the maintained PL-RS on the PUCCH cell 203 for the cell activation procedure. As such, the cell activation delay can be reduced efficiently.

[0068] In this way, the clear definition for “PL-RS is maintained” can be provided and the necessity of PL-RS measurements can be determined based on a TA. With the process 200, the cell activation delay requirements for activating a PUCCH SCell can be lowered. Note that the solution is not restricted to NR only, but may also apply to other legacy or future systems such as 6G.

[0069] FIG. 3 illustrates another example of a process 300 for cell activation according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 300 may be deemed as a detailed example of the process 200 illustrated in FIG. 2. A terminal device 301, a PCell 302 and a cell 303 (also referred to as cell1 303) may be involved in the process 300. The terminal device 301, PCell 302 and cell 303 may be respective examples of the terminal device 201, PCell 202 and cell 203 in FIG. 2. The cell 303 may be a PUCCH SCell or a SCell configured with UL transmission for instance PSCell. Alternatively, the cell 303 may be a PSCell configured with UL transmission (also referred to as PUCCH PSCell herein) .

[0070] As illustrated in FIG. 3, in the process 300, the PCell 302 may transmit 310 a cell deactivation command 315 to the terminal device 301 to deactivate the cell1 303. The terminal device 301 may receive 320 the cell deactivation command 315. Based on receiving 320 the cell deactivation command 315, the terminal device 301 may maintain or not maintain 330 a PL-RS of the cell 303. The terminal device 301 may maintain the PL-RS by keeping monitoring the PL-RS.

[0071] In some embodiments, the terminal device 301 may keep maintaining the PL-RS of the cell 303 in the event that a TAT associated with the cell 303 is running. In some embodiments, the terminal device 301 may further keep the TAT running and store the TA based on determining that the TAT is running when receiving 320 the cell deactivation command 315 to deactivate the cell 303. Conversely, in the event that the TAT expires,  the terminal device 201 may stop maintaining the PL-RS of the PUCCH cell 303.

[0072] Alternatively, the terminal device 301 may keep maintaining the PL-RS of the PUCCH cell 303 in the event that the TAT has expired for a period shorter than a threshold period. Conversely, the terminal device 301 may stop maintaining the PL-RS in the event that the TAT has expired for a period longer than the threshold period. The threshold period may be predetermined or configured by the network.

[0073] In some embodiments, in the event that the terminal device 301 keeps maintaining the PL-RS, the terminal device 301 may further maintain the PL-RS after the cell 303 is deactivated based on the cell deactivation command 315.

[0074] In some embodiments, the terminal device 301 may keep maintaining the PL-RS of the cell 303 in the event that the PL-RS remains detectable.

[0075] After the cell 303 is deactivated, the PCell 302 may transmit 340 a cell activation command 345 to the terminal device 301 to activate the cell 303. The terminal device 301 may receive 350 the cell activation command 345. Based on receiving 350 the cell activation command 345, the terminal device 301 may determine 360 whether the PL-RS of the cell 303 is maintained based on at least a TA for the cell 303.

[0076] As discussed above, the terminal device 301 may determine 360 that the PL-RS is maintained in the event that the terminal device 301 has a valid TA for transmitting on the PUCCH cell 303. For example, the terminal device 301 may determine 360 that the PL-RS is maintained if the TAT associated with the PUCCH cell 303 is still running. Further, based on the determination that the PL-RS is maintained, the terminal device 301 may perform 370 a cell activation procedure by skipping unnecessary PL-RS measurement (s) of the PL-RS of the cell 303.

[0077] FIG. 4A illustrates an example of a process 400 of PL-RS maintenance for cell activation according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 400 may be deemed as a detailed example of the process 200 illustrated in FIG. 2. UE 401, a PCell 402 and a cell 403 (also referred to as cell1 403) may be involved in the process 400. The UE 401, PCell 402 and cell 403 may be respective examples of the terminal device 201, PCell 202 and cell 203 in FIG. 2. The cell 403 may be a PUCCH SCell. FIG. 4A illustrates option 1 for PL-RS maintenance based on TA status in the PUCCH SCell.

[0078] In the process 400, the UE 401 may be initially connected with the PCell 402 and the network may send radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration to ensure that the UE  401 will measure the carrier which is intended to be used for CA. In steps 2 to 5, the UE may receive the measurement configuration and initiate the inter-frequency measurements on the carrier. Once the measurement reporting event is fulfilled the UE may transmit a measurement report to the network in step 5, including the detected and measured cell on the carrier. The network may then, based on the report received from the UE 401, add cell 403 as the SCell for CA operation in step 6. It is assumed the SCell is set to activated status via the RRC reconfiguration message in step 6.

[0079] In step 7, the UE 401 and the network perform the necessary procedures for acquiring the uplink synchronization (e.g., TA acquisition) . This may be done using the already defined random access procedure and the details are outside the scope of the present disclosure. Any data exchange can now be exchanged between the UE 401 and the network.

[0080] In step 8, it is assumed that the UE 401 has a valid TA and that the TAT is running when the UE 401 receives the SCell deactivation command in step 9. Based on this command the UE 401 (and the network) may deactivate the cell 403 in step 10.

[0081] In option 1, the UE 401 may be only required to maintain the PL-RS of the deactivated cell 403 with UL while the TAT is running. Specifically, in step 12, because the UE 401 has a valid TA at the time when the cell 403 was deactivated, the UE 401 may store the TA and keep the associated TAT running. In step 13 the UE 401 may measure the deactivated cell 403 according to the existing measurement requirements for a deactivated SCell. As illustrated in step 14, measurement requirements for deactivated SCell may be applicable.

[0082] As the UE 401 has a TAT running for the deactivated cell 403, the UE 401 may additionally in step 15 continue to maintain the PL-RS (which is essential for the UE 401 to perform UL transmission in the SCell) . In this case, if the cell 403 is activated while the TAT is running, the UE may have a valid PL-RS for the cell 403 and no further PL-RS measurements will be necessary during the cell activation procedure.

[0083] In step 17, the TAT associated with the cell 403 may expire. If the TAT expires while the cell 403 is deactivated, the UE 401 may stop maintaining the PL-RS of the deactivated cell 403 in step 18.

[0084] FIG. 4B illustrates another example of a process 450 of PL-RS maintenance for cell activation according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 4B illustrates option 2 for the PL-RS maintenance based on TA status in the PUCCH SCell. The steps 1  to 9 may be the same as discussed with reference to FIG. 4A and the details are omitted herein.

[0085] As illustrated in FIG. 4B, the UE 401 may be required to maintain the PL-RS of the deactivated SCell 403 with UL while the TAT is running and additionally afterwards. In other words, the UE 401 may continue to maintain the PL-RS of the SCell 403 even after the TAT expires.

[0086] Specifically, in step 20, because the UE 401 has a valid TA at the time when the SCell was deactivated, the UE 401 may store the TA and keep the associated TAT running. In step 21 the UE 401 may measures the deactivated cell 403 according to the existing measurement requirements for a deactivated SCell. As illustrated in step 22, measurement requirements for deactivated SCell may be applicable.

[0087] As the UE 401 has a TAT running for the deactivated cell 403, the UE 401 may additionally in step 23 continue to maintain the PL-RS (which is essential for the UE 401 to perform UL transmission in the SCell) . In this case, if the cell 403 is activated while the TAT is running, the UE 401 may have the valid PL-RS for cell 403 and no further PL-RS measurements will be necessary during the SCell activation setup time.

[0088] In step 25, even when the TAT expires while the cell 403 is deactivated, the UE 401 may continue maintaining the PL-RS of the deactivated cell 403 in step 26. In other words, the UE 401 may keep maintaining the PL-RS for PUCCH SCell even after the TAT expires.

[0089] FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 500 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 500 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 201 with reference to FIG. 2.

[0090] At block 510, the terminal device 201determines that a PL-RS of a PUCCH cell for the terminal device 201 is maintained, in the event that the terminal device 201 has a valid TA for transmitting on the PUCCH cell. At block 520, the terminal device 201 performs a cell activation procedure for the PUCCH cell based on the determination that the PL-RS is maintained.

[0091] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may determine that the PL-RS is maintained by: determining that the PL-RS is maintained in the event that a TA timer, TAT, associated with the PUCCH cell is running; or determining that the PL-RS is maintained in the event that a TAT associated with the PUCCH cell has expired for a period shorter than a threshold period.

[0092] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may determine that the PL-RS is maintained further based on: determining that the PL-RS used for uplink, UL, transmission is valid when receiving a cell activation command for activating the PUCCH cell.

[0093] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may determine that the PL-RS used for the uplink transmission is valid by: determining that the PL-RS used for the uplink transmission remains detectable during the cell activation procedure for the PUCCH cell.

[0094] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may further perform, based on receiving a cell deactivation command to deactivate the PUCCH cell, at least one of the following: keeping maintaining the PL-RS in the event that the TAT is running; or stopping maintaining the PL-RS in the event that the TAT expires.

[0095] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may further perform, based on receiving a cell deactivation command to deactivate the PUCCH cell, at least one of the following: keeping maintaining the PL-RS in the event that the TAT has expired for a period shorter than a threshold period; or stopping maintaining the PL-RS in the event that the TAT has expired for a period longer than the threshold period.

[0096] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may further stop maintaining the PL-RS after the PUCCH cell is deactivated based on the cell deactivation command. In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may keep the TAT running and store the TA based on determining that the TAT is running when receiving a cell deactivation command to deactivate the PUCCH cell.

[0097] In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may maintain the PL-RS by keeping monitoring the PL-RS. In some embodiments, the terminal device 201 may perform the cell activation procedure for the PUCCH cell by: skipping at least one PL-RS measurement for the cell activation procedure; and applying a determined pathloss estimation associated with the maintained PL-RS on the PUCCH cell for the cell activation procedure. In some embodiments, the PUCCH cell may be a PUCCH secondary sell, SCell, or a PUCCH primary secondary cell, PSCell. In some embodiments, the maintained PL-RS has been measured or used for UL transmission while the TAT is running.
