AI Technical Summary
Current technologies face challenges in managing user equipment (UE) behaviors after a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) measurement failure, particularly in non-terrestrial networks (NTN) where simultaneous GNSS and IoT NTN operation is not assumed.
The proposed solution involves an apparatus and method for a user equipment (UE) and network node, where a triggering command is sent to the UE to apply a specific configuration affecting uplink transmission based on the outcome of a GNSS measurement and the validity duration of a previous GNSS measurement.
This approach enables the UE to dynamically adjust its uplink transmission behavior based on the success or failure of the GNSS measurement, optimizing network performance and preventing interference even when the GNSS validity duration is still valid.

Abstract
Description
METHODS AND APPARATUS RELATED TO GNSS MEASUREMENTTECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] Embodiments of the disclosure generally relate to wireless communication technology, and more particularly, to methods and apparatus for controlling behaviors of a user equipment after a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) measurement failure.BACKGROUND
[0002] The GNSS can be used by a user equipment (UE) to determine its position. This GNSS position information can be utilized to compensate for frequency offset (caused by Doppler shift) and timing offset in a radio propagation between the UE and a satellite. For example, for geosynchronous orbits satellites (height about 36000 km) , the UE has to compensate for a propagation delay. For low earth orbit satellites (height about 250 -1500 km) , the UE also has to compensate for Doppler and time shifts, which occur due to a satellite movement (about 7.5 km / s relative to the Earth) .
[0003] In a technique of internet of things (IoT) support for non-terrestrial networks (NTN) , it is assumed that a UE cannot operate GNSS and IoT NTN simultaneously. Therefore, a GNSS measurement gap is defined, where a UE can perform a GNSS measurement without monitoring the PDCCH and performing other operations of cellular communication. There currently exist certain challenge (s) for such case.SUMMARY

Non-limiting examples of a UE comprise IoT devices, enhance machine type communication (eMTC) devices, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, mobile terminals (MTs) , wearable wireless devices, a mobile phone or what is known as a “smart phone” , a portable computer, personal data assistant (PDA) , or any combinations of these or the like.

The network node can communicate directly or indirectly with a UE and / or with other network nodes in a cellular communications network, to enable and / or provide wireless access to the UE, and / or to perform other functions (e.g., administration) in the cellular communications network. Non-limiting examples of a network node comprise a base station (BS) , a NodeB, eNodeB (eNB) , gNodeB (gNB) , an access point, or the like.
[0086] Embodiments of this disclosure may be implemented in a system of a non-terrestrial networks (NTN) . The typical NTN comprises NTN based on transparent payload (also called transparent payload NTN) and NTN based on regenerative payload (also called regenerative payload NTN) . FIG. 1 shows a system100A for transparent payload NTN. As shown in the upper part of FIG. 1, the system 100A comprises a user equipment (UE) 101, an eNB 102, a core network 103, a satellite 104, and an NTN gateway 105. A transparent payload NTN can be seen as a relay node on the network side, which changes the frequency carrier of the uplink and downlink RF signal, and filters and amplifies it before downlink transmission, but the waveform of the loaded signal remains unchanged. The satellite acts as a radio frequency relay. The satellite 104 repeats an LTE-Uu radio interface from a feeder link (between an NTN gateway 105 and the satellite 104) to the service link (between the satellite 104 and the UE 104) and vice versa. Different transparent satellites may be connected to a same eNB 102 on the ground.
[0087] The lower part of FIG. 1 shows a system 100B for regenerative payload NTN. The system 100B comprises a user equipment (UE) 101, an eNB 102, a core network 103, a satellite 104, and a NTN gateway 105. The satellite 104 hosts the eNB 102, and thus play a role of the entire or partial base station.
[0088] Currently, standardization works (such as 3GPP work groups) on IoT support for NTN specify that improved GNSS operations are needed for a new position fix for UE pre-compensation during long connection times and for reduced power consumption. Further, simultaneous GNSS and NTN narrow band (NB) -IoT / eMTC operation is not assumed. In other words, it is assumed a UE cannot operate GNSS and IoT NTN simultaneously.
[0089] According to agreements in the standardization works, a base station (such as eNB) may aperiodically trigger a GNSS measurement gap (MG) for a UE in which the UE can perform the GNSS measurement. During GNSS MG, the UE cannot monitor the PDCCH and performing other cellular communication. The trigger is based on a downlink media access control (MAC) control element (CE) . In this regard, a new downlink MAC CE may be introduced to trigger a UE in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) connected state to perform GNSS measurement. The base station (or other network node) is free to decide when to trigger GNSS measurement or a GNSS measurement gap. When the base station or network node triggers a GNSS measurement is up to network implementation.
[0090] For the GNSS measurement gap aperiodically triggered with an MAC CE, the duration for the GNSS measurement gap can be configured by a base station (such as eNB) . When a duration for a GNSS measurement gap is not included in a configuration by eNB, the duration of the GNSS measurement gap may be equal to a time duration for GNSS measurement associated with a latest reported GNSS position fix.
[0091] For GNSS measurement in RRC connected state, if an eNB aperiodically triggers a UE in RRC connected state to make GNSS measurement, the UE can re-acquire GNSS position fix with a gap. The UE is not required to transmit or receive any channel / signal within a duration of the aperiodic GNSS measurement gap before the UE re-acquires GNSS data (through the GNSS measurement) successfully.
[0092] According to an agreement, the UE may re-acquire GNSS autonomously (when configured by the network) if the UE does not receive a trigger to make GNSS measurement from the network (such as an eNB or other network node) .
[0093] The UE may trigger GNSS measurement reporting every time upon completing a GNSS fix operation. In connected mode, the UE may report a GNSS validation duration with an MAC CE. The reported GNSS validity duration is a remaining validity duration for the GNSS validity duration. This enables the UE and eNB to have a common understanding of the UE’s GNSS state, i.e., when it is valid and when it is outdated.
[0094] According to an agreement, at least for the case when frequency error and timing error are within frequency and timing error requirements with legacy closed loop time correction, uplink transmission can be allowed in a duration after an original GNSS validity duration expires without GNSS re-acquisition.
[0095] A UE reports GNSS position fix time duration for measurement at least during the initial access stage. The position fix time duration defines the time the UE expects it requires to perform the GNSS measurement. Therefore, the eNB can use it to estimate the length of the GNSS MG. Basically the MG should be equal to or longer than the position fix time duration to allow the UE to perform and complete the GNSS measurement. Thus, the eNB may configure a corresponding GNSS MG duration for a UE based on the GNSS position fix time duration reported by the UE.
[0096] Based on the current agreements, an eNB may trigger a GNSS MG early as compared to the expiry of a current GNSS validity duration for the latest GNSS measurement. That is, there is a long time until the current GNSS position fix is no longer expected to be valid. The scenario is illustrated in FIG. 2.
[0097] FIG. 2 shows a timeline of an exemplary procedure of GNSS measurement. In this exemplary procedure, when an eNB triggers a GNSS MG for a UE as shown at 230, a current GNSS validity duration 204 associated with an earlier GNSS MG is still valid. In the earlier GNSS MG as shown at 210, the UE has performed GNSS measurement to re-acquire a GNSS position fix successfully. The UE may report a GNSS validity duration of the re-acquired GNSS position fix to the eNB, as shown at 220. The GNSS validity duration indicates a time duration in which the re-acquired GNSS position fix is expected to be valid. Noted that the reported GNSS validity duration is a time duration referenced to a time of reporting the GNSS validity duration (as shown by 202) . In this regard, it is a remaining validity duration for a current GNSS position fix of the UE, i.e., the position fix obtained in step 210.
[0098] There are multiple reasons why the eNB may trigger such an early GNSS MG at 230. In an exemplary scenario, during the GNSS validity duration 204, the UE may move unexpectedly so that the current GNSS position fix (which is acquired in the earlier GNSS MG 210) is not valid. The eNB may observe that the UE’s uplink transmission is not properly synchronized due to the invalid GNSS position. Then, the eNB may trigger a GNSS MG early before an expiration of the current GNSS validation duration, as shown at 230. In another exemplary scenario, the eNB may observe that the network (such as the eNB or other network nodes) is planning to schedule or has scheduled a long repetition period (which may be up to 40s in NB-IoT) for uplink transmission or downlink transmission, in which the current GNSS validity duration will expire. It is not desired that the long repetition is to be interrupted by a future GNSS MG. Therefore, the eNB may trigger the UE to re-acquire a GNSS position fix early, such that the new GNSS position fix of the UE would not expire during the scheduled repetition period.
[0099] In response to receiving a triggering command from the eNB, the UE can re-acquire a GNSS position fix with a triggered or scheduled GNSS MG, as shown at 240. When the GNSS position fix is performed successfully, the UE may operation in a normal way. The current GNSS validity duration 202 will be replaced to a new GNSS validity duration. However, it is not specified what the UE shall do if the GNSS position fix (i.e., GNSS measurement) performed at the triggered or scheduled GNSS MG 240 fails while the current GNSS validity duration is still valid, as shown by the remaining time of the current GNSS validity duration at 204.
[0100] The present disclosure proposes solutions for addressing this issue. A general view is that a UE shall move to a RRC Idle state if the GNSS measurement fails. But according to the above observation of the reasons why the eNB triggers such an early GNSS MG, it is only strictly needed in case of the misaligned uplink (e.g., if the UE has moved unexpectedly) . In the latter case of a pending long repetition period, the UE’s current GNSS validity duration is still valid and useful, and thus it would be a waste of signaling and energy if the UE were to move to RRC Idle state upon a failed GNSS measurement. Therefore, it will be beneficial to discuss the above cases and define corresponding UE behaviors upon a GNSS measurement trigger followed by a GNSS measurement failure based on the reasons for triggering the GNSS MG. However, currently, the UE cannot know the reasons for the eNB to trigger the GNSS MG.
[0101] The present disclosure defines how a network node (such as eNB) can control a UE behavior if the UE fails to re-acquire the GNSS position fix in a GNSS MG, which completes when the UE’s previous GNSS validity duration has not expired (i.e., there is remaining time of the current GNSS validity duration as shown at 204 in FIG. 2) . In general, the present disclosure proposes that the network node includes in a GNSS measurement trigger, an indication indicating a configuration, having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE, to be applied after a failed GNSS measurement while a current GNSS validity duration of the UE associated with an earlier GNSS measurement is valid. The configuration having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE may indicate whether uplink transmission of the UE is allowed. Then, the UE could apply the configuration to perform one or more actions according to the indication, when the triggered GNSS measurement fails and a GNSS validity duration associated with an earlier GNSS measurement is still valid (e.g., as shown by the remaining GNSS validity duration 204 in FIG. 2) .
[0102] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, when the GNSS measurement is triggered in case that a GNSS position fix of the UE is invalid, such as the scenario described above in which a misaligned uplink transmission appears due to an invalid GNSS position, the configuration indicated in the GNSS measurement trigger may indicate that the uplink transmission of the UE is not allowed. Then, the UE would stop uplink transmissions, e.g., until the UE has re-acquired a new GNSS position fix. Otherwise, the UE may cause uplink interference to other UEs.
[0103] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, when the GNSS measurement is triggered in case that a GNSS position of the UE is valid, such as the scenario of a pending long repetition period described above, the configuration indicated in the GNSS measurement trigger may indicate that the uplink transmission of the UE is allowed. Therefore, the UE can continue the uplink transmission until the current GNSS validity duration expiry.
[0104] In some embodiments, an eNB may include, as a part of a triggering command (e.g., downlink MAC CE) , a flag (e.g., 1 bit) which defines one or more behaviors to be performed by a UE if a triggered GNSS position fix (i.e., GNSS measurement) fails during the scheduled / triggered GNSS MG.Further take the timeline of procedure shown in FIG. 2 as example, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, a GNSS triggering command shown at 230 may indicate that, in case that the GNSS measurement in GNSS MG 240 fails, whether the UE shall move to a RRC Idle state or is allowed to remain a RRC Connected state and use the remaining GNSS validity duration 204.
[0105] In embodiments where the indication included in a GNSS measurement triggering command indicates that the uplink transmission of the UE is not allowed, the indication may indicate at least one of the following behaviors to be performed by the UE:
[0106] Behavior (a) : it is mandated that the UE shall move to a RRC Idle state.
[0107] Behavior (b) : all uplink transmissions of the UE are prohibited.
[0108] Behavior (c) : all uplink transmissions of the UE except for an uplink transmission related to reporting a failure of the GNSS measurement are prohibited. In an example, the uplink transmission for reporting the failure may be based on a physical random access channel (PRACH) , e.g., by use of special resources and / or preambles. For example, the UE may send a PRACH or schedule a request to trigger a scheduling grant for transmitting an MAC CE carrying a report of GNSS measurement failure. In another example, the UE may have pre-configured resources for transmitting the MAC CE. Thereby, the UE can send a report of a failure of the GNSS measurement directly.
[0109] The transmission resources may be pre-configured via radio resource control (RRC) signaling by the network (such as eNB) . Alternatively or additionally, the resources may be indicated by the GNSS measurement triggering command, e.g., as a part of the GNSS triggering command, explicitly or implicitly. In some embodiments, a GNSS triggering command is transmitted via an MAC CE, and an index of the MAC CE may indicate the resources. For example, it may be pre-defined or specified which configuration of uplink resources each index of MAC CE corresponds to.
[0110] In an embodiment the UE may report a new GNSS validity duration to indicate the GNSS measurement failure. Similar as discussed above for reporting a failure of the GNSS measurement, transmission resources for the new GNSS validity duration may be pre-configured or pre-allocated by the network (such as eNB) .
[0111] Behavior (d) : it is mandated that the UE performs an autonomous GNSS measurement after a failed GNSS measurement in the triggered GNSS MG. In an embodiment, the triggering command indicates a number of autonomous GNSS measurements allowed to be performed by the UE.
[0112] Behavior (e) : the UE should monitor a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) for receiving another triggering command of an additional GNSS measurement. Here, the triggering command may further indicate that the UE does not send a feedback for the received another triggering command, as a normal hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) process containing a GNSS measurement triggering. This is because, there may be no uplink sync currently, due to invalid GNSS position fix. In this regard, the network node would transmit another triggering command for GNSS measurement when it finds the GNSS measurement fails. In an example, the network node may receive a report of the GNSS measurement failure. In another example, the network node may deduce the GNSS measurement failure due to not receiving a new GNSS validity duration.
[0113] In an embodiment, the another triggering command may further indicate a configuration of uplink resources for the UE to report a result (e.g., success or failure) when the additional GNSS measurement complete. In an example, the another triggering command may indicate the uplink resources for the report implicitly. For example, it may be configured that if the another triggering command is transmitted in a subframe with an index n, then the UE will know there is an available uplink resource in a subframe with an index n+k, where k may be a pre-configured or pre-defined constant value.
[0114] In an embodiment, the network (such as eNB) may configure how long the UE shall monitor for scheduling of a new GNSS MG triggering command. The GNSS MG triggering command may further indicate a period of time (e.g., a duration of a timer) . After monitoring for this period of time, the UE may move to a RRC Idle state or perform an autonomous GNSS measurement, e.g., based on a pre-configuration from the network, if no GNSS MG triggering command was received within the period of time. A selection between the autonomous GNSS measurement and moving to the RRC Idle state may be performed based on a network configuration, which may be indicated in the original GNSS MG triggering command, or be pre-configured via a RRC signaling from the eNB, or be a default configuration (e.g., specified in some specifications) .
[0115] It should be noted that the UE could perform one or more of the above described behaviors based on the GNSS MG triggering command. For example, the Behavior (b) or (c) may be performed in combination with one or both of Behaviors (d) and (e) .
[0116] In embodiments where the indication included in a GNSS measurement triggering command indicates that the uplink transmission of the UE is allowed, the indication may indicate at least one of the following behaviors to be performed by the UE:
[0117] Behavior (f) : the UE remains a RRC Connected state.
[0118] Behavior (g) : the UE reports the failure of the GNSS measurement to the network node (such as eNB) . Uplink resources for the reporting may be a pre-configured resource, e.g., on a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) or a physical random access channel (PRACH) . Alternatively, the UE may perform a buffer status reporting (BSR) , or scheduling request (SR) , or a random access on the physical random access (PRACH) to report the failure of the GNSS measurement.
[0119] In an embodiment, the UE would not report the failure of the GNSS measurement. The network can deduce that the GNSS measurement fails due to not receiving a report of a success GNSS measurement, or a report of a failure GNSS measurement, in a pre-configured resource.
[0120] In an embodiment the UE may report a new GNSS validity duration to indicate the GNSS measurement failure. Transmission resources for reporting the new GNSS validity duration may be pre-configured or pre-allocated by the network (such as eNB) .
[0121] In an embodiment, the UE is allowed to begin normal or traditional uplink transmissions after receiving from a network node a network confirmation or feedback (e.g., HARQ-ACK) for the UE’s report about the GNSS measurement failure. Alternatively, the UE can begin uplink transmissions after transmitting the report, without awaiting a potential network confirmation or feedback.
[0122] Behavior (h) : the UE is prohibited from perform uplink transmission before a network-configured period (e.g., a pre-configured number of slots or seconds) at a beginning or end of the triggered GNSS measurement gap. In other words, the uplink transmission of the UE is allowed after a pre-configured period from a beginning or end of a GNSS measurement gap for the GNSS measurement. The GNSS measurement triggering command may indicate the pre-configured period. This is to prevent UEs from skipping the network-triggered GNSS measurement and move directly to a state where the GNSS measurement fails so as to continue uplink transmission.
[0123] Behavior (i) : the UE requests another GNSS measurement. For example, the UE may transmit to a network node, a request for the another GNSS measurement as a part of a report of GNSS measurement failure.
[0124] Behavior (j) : the UE performs an autonomous GNSS measurement after a failed GNSS measurement in the triggered GNSS MG. In an embodiment, the triggering command indicates a number of autonomous GNSS measurements allowed to be performed by the UE.
[0125] Behavior (k) : the UE starts to monitor the PDCCH for receiving a new GNSS measurement triggering command right after the configured or triggered GNSS MG, in case that the GNSS measurement in the configured or triggered GNSS MG fails. In this regard, the network may configure the UE with a new GNSS MG if it detects the GNSS measurement failure during the configured or triggered GNSS MG. In response to receiving a new triggering command for an additional GNSS measurement, the UE would perform an additional GNSS measurement to re-acquire a new GNSS position fix.
[0126] Behavior (l) : the UE enters a connected discontinuous reception (DRX) active time right after the configured or triggered GNSS MG with a length of DRX on-duration timer or a DRX inactivity timer, in case that the GNSS measurement in the configured or triggered GNSS MG fails. In this regard, the network may configure the UE with a new GNSS MG if it detects the GNSS measurement failure during the configured or triggered GNSS MG. The UE can monitor the PDCCH for receiving a new GNSS measurement triggering command in an on-duration period according to the DRX on-duration timer or the DRX inactivity timer. The DRX on-duration timer and / or the DRX inactivity timer may be pre-configured or indicated in the triggering command for the failure GNSS measurement. The network may configure the UE with another GNSS measurement gap if it detects the GNSS measurement failure during a configured / triggered GNSS MG. In response to receiving the new GNSS measurement triggering command, the UE would perform an additional GNSS measurement to re-acquire a new GNSS position fix.
[0127] It should be noted that the UE could perform one or more of the above described behaviors (f) through (l) based on the GNSS MG triggering command. For example, the Behavior (f) may be performed in combination with any one of Behaviors (g) through (l) ; the Behavior (g) may be performed in combination with any one of Behavior (f) and Behaviors (h) through (l) .
[0128] In some embodiments, the indication included in a GNSS measurement triggering command indicates a configuration, having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE, to be applied may be a newly added field, e.g., a 1-bit flag. The newly added field may explicitly indicate one or more behaviors to be applied by the UE, such as any one of the Behaviors (a) through (l) or any applicable combination of the Behaviors (a) through (l) . In another example, the indication may be an index of the downlink MAC CE which carries the triggering command. The index may implicitly indicate one or more behaviors to be applied by the UE, such as any one of the Behaviors (a) through (l) or any applicable combination of the Behaviors (a) through (l) . For example, it may be pre-defined or specified which behavior (s) each index of MAC CE corresponds to.
[0129] The solutions of the present disclosure may be applicable to a UE (or a wireless device) and a network node in NTN environment, involving GNSS, or any other positioning procedure and system, e.g., a 3GPP-based positioning procedure and system (which are commonly called as GNSS in this disclosure, for the sake of a brief description) . Hereinafter, the solutions of the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to FIGs. 3-7.
[0130] FIG. 3 is a flow chart depicting a method performed at a UE according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. At block 310, the UE receives from a network node (such as an eNB) , a triggering command for triggering a GNSS measurement. The triggering command comprises an indication indicating a configuration, having an effect on UL transmission of the UE, to be applied in case that the GNSS measurement fails and a GNSS validity duration of the UE associated with an earlier GNSS measurement is valid. The triggering command may be a downlink MAC CE or a message. The indication may indicate one or more behaviors to be performed by the UE implicitly (e.g., by a 1-bit flag in the) or explicitly (e.g., by an index of the downlink MAC CE) .
[0131] Indication of the configuration which has an effect on the uplink transmission of the UE may be understood as indication of one or more behaviors. That is, the indicated configuration applied by the UE may cause the UE to follow or perform on or more behaviors as described above. Thus, for example, it may be understood that behavior or behaviors to follow is indicated to the UE. Moreover, applying the configuration may cause the UE to perform one or more behaviors associated with the configuration. In one example, one configuration may be associated with one behavior. In another example, one configuration may be associated with a plurality of behaviors.
[0132] At block 320, based on an occurrence that the GNSS measurement fails and the GNSS validity duration is valid, the UE applies the configuration having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE in accordance with the indication (i.e., the indicated configuration) . In this regard, based on determining, by the UE, that the GNSS measurement fails and the GNSS validity duration is valid, the UE may apply the configuration in accordance with the indication. For example, the UE may deduce the configuration to be applied from one or more behaviors indicated by the indication. Applying the configuration for the UE would cause the UE to execute the indicated one or more behaviors. In an example, the configuration may be pre-defined to be associated to the indicated one or more behaviors. For example, the UE may determine that GNSS measurement fails or has failed (based on GNSS measurement failing) and determine that the GNSS validity duration associated with an earlier GNSS measurement is valid, and based on the determining that GNSS measurement fails or has failed and that said GNSS validity duration is valid apply the configuration indicated by the indication in the triggering command.
[0133] In an embodiment, the indicated configuration indicates or configures whether uplink transmission of the UE is allowed. For example, the indication may thus indicate that uplink transmission is allowed or it may indicate that uplink transmission is not allowed. It may be up to the network to determine and indicate whether uplink transmission is allowed or not. For example, a certain configuration or configurations indicated by the indication may allow uplink transmission. For example, a certain other configuration or configurations indicated by the indication may not allow uplink transmission. Thus, the indicated configuration may have an effect on the uplink transmission of the UE. For example, uplink transmission here may refer generally to UE’s uplink transmissions. However, as discussed below, even if a configuration not allowing uplink transmission by the UE would be indicated, the configuration may still allow the UE to transmit certain information according to the configuration in certain embodiments. Moreover, for certain configuration that does not allow uplink transmission, the configuration applied by the UE may cause the UE to perform certain action (s) . Examples of the actions, of which UE may perform one or more, may include: prohibiting any uplink transmission, prohibiting any uplink transmission except reporting the GNSS measurement failure, performing autonomous GNSS measurement, monitoring PDCCH for new aperiodic GNSS measurement gap trigger, and moving to RRC idle mode. For certain other configuration that does allow uplink transmission, the configuration applied by the UE may cause the UE to perform certain action (s) . Examples of the actions, of which UE may perform one or more, may include: reporting the GNSS measurement failure, requesting new GNSS measurement gap, monitoring PDCCH for new aperiodic GNSS measurement gap trigger, and receiving, from network, trigger of GNSS measurement gap. These actions are discussed below in greater detail.
[0134] In an embodiment, the configuration may be applied in accordance with the indication, based on an occurrence that the GNSS measurement fails and the triggering command is received at least a pre-defined period of time before an expiry of the GNSS validity duration. In this regard, if the remaining GNSS validity duration is too short to take any meaningful behavior, the UE does not need to apply the configuration. The pre-defined period of time may be specified in a specification or protocol.
[0135] In an embodiment, the triggering command may indicate whether additional GNSS measurements are allowed if the GNSS measurement fails. For example, the triggering command may indicate that a number (denoted as X, e.g., =1 or other number) of additional GNSS measurements are allowed. Then, the UE may apply the configuration when all of the additional X measurements also fail.
[0136] Although not shown in FIG. 3, the UE may receive via a radio resource control (RRC) signaling from the network node (such as an eNB) , configuration information indicating one or more configurations having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE in case that a GNSS measurement fails. Alternatively or additionally, the UE may obtain from a pre-defined configuration, configuration information indicating one or more configurations having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE in case that a GNSS measurement fails. In some embodiments, the UE may apply the configuration further based on at least one of the received configuration information and the obtained configuration information. For example, a RRC configuration of the GNSS MG or the specification text may define one or more default behaviors or configurations for uplink transmission of the UE, such as one or more of the Behaviors (a) through (l) or one or more of applicable combinations of the Behaviors (a) through (l) . Then, at least part of the default behaviors or configurations can be overridden with the indication (e.g., a 1-bit flag) in the GNSS MG trigger command.
[0137] In some embodiments, the indication may indicate that the uplink transmission is not allowed. Then, the UE would apply the configuration in accordance with the indication indicating that the uplink transmission of the UE is not allowed.
[0138] In an embodiment, applying the configuration may cause the UE to move to a RRC idle state from a RRC connected state based on applying the configuration. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (a) as discussed above.
[0139] In an embodiment, the applied configuration may prohibit all uplink transmissions of the UE. Then, the UE would not transmit any signal to the network node in uplink. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (b) as discussed above.
[0140] In an embodiment, the applied configuration may prohibit all uplink transmissions of the UE except for uplink transmission related to a report of a failure of the GNSS measurement. Then, applying the configuration may cause the UE to transmit the report of the failure of the GNSS measurement to the base station according to the indication. The report may comprise a new GNSS validity duration to indicate the failure of the GNSS measurement. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (c) as discussed above.
[0141] The triggering command may comprise information related to an uplink resource for transmitting the report of the failure of the GNSS measurement. In an example, the triggering command may comprise information of an uplink resource for transmitting a PRACH or scheduling request to trigger a scheduling grant for an uplink transmission of a MAC CE with the report. In another example, the triggering command may comprise information of an uplink resource for transmitting a MAC CE with the report. In another example, the uplink resource for transmitting the report is pre- configured, e.g., by the network node via a RRC signaling. Then, the UE may transmit the report directly.
[0142] In an embodiment, the applied configuration may indicate that the UE should perform an autonomous additional GNSS measurement. Then, applying the configuration cause the UE to perform an additional GNSS measurement autonomously. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (d) as discussed above. The triggering command may indicate a number (denoted as Y, e.g., =1 or other number) of additional GNSS measurements allowed to be performed autonomously. For example, if all of the Y autonomous measurements fail, the UE may move to RRC idle state.
[0143] In an embodiment, applying the configuration may cause the UE to monitor a downlink control channel for receiving another triggering command for triggering an additional GNSS measurement, and receive the another triggering command. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (e) as discussed above. Applying the configuration may cause the UE to receive the another triggering command without transmitting a feedback for the receipt of the another triggering command. The triggering command further comprises information related to a period for monitoring the downlink control channel. Then, applying the configuration may cause the apparatus to move to a RRC idle state or performing an additional GNSS measurement autonomously after the period, in case that no triggering command for triggering an additional GNSS measurement is received during the period. In an embodiment, the triggering command may comprise information related to an uplink resource for transmitting a report of a result of the additional GNSS measurement. In another embodiment, an uplink resource for transmitting a report of a result of the additional GNSS measurement is pre-configured.
[0144] In some embodiments, the indication may indicate that the uplink transmission is allowed. Then, the UE would apply the configuration in accordance with the indication indicating that the uplink transmission of the UE is allowed.
[0145] In an embodiment, applying the configuration may cause the UE to apply a RRC connected state. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (f) as discussed above.
[0146] In an embodiment, applying the configuration may cause the UE to transmit a report of a failure of the GNSS measurement to the network node. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (g) as discussed above. The report may comprise a new GNSS validity duration to indicate the failure of the GNSS measurement. In an embodiment, applying the configuration causes the UE to perform uplink transmission after receiving a confirmation for the report from the network node. In another embodiment, applying the configuration causes the UE to perform an uplink transmission after transmitting the report.
[0147] In another embodiment, the configuration may prohibit the UE to transmit a report of a result (failure or success) of the GNSS measurement to the network node in a pre-configured resource, so that the network node can deduce the failure of the GNSS measurement due to not receiving a report of success GNSS measurement or a report of failure GNSS measurement, in the pre-configured resource. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (h) as discussed above.
[0148] In an embodiment, the indication may indicate that the uplink transmission is allowed after a pre-configured period from a beginning or end of a GNSS measurement gap for the GNSS measurement. Then, the UE may perform an uplink transmission after the pre-configured period.
[0149] In an embodiment, applying the configuration may cause the UE to transmit, to the network node, a request for an additional GNSS measurement. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (i) as discussed above. Then, applying the configuration may cause the UE to monitor a downlink control channel (PDCCH) for receiving another triggering command for triggering an additional GNSS measurement; and receive the another triggering command from the network node.
[0150] In an embodiment, applying the configuration may cause the UE to perform an additional GNSS measurement autonomously. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (j) as discussed above.
[0151] In an embodiment, the triggering command indicates a number of additional autonomous GNSS measurements and / or additional requested GNSS measurements allowed to be performed. The UE may be further caused to perform an uplink transmission by using the GNSS validity duration in case that all of the additional GNSS measurements fails.
[0152] In an embodiment, applying the configuration may cause the UE to start monitor a PDCCH for receiving another triggering command for triggering an additional GNSS measurement, right after the GNSS MG of the failure GNSS measurement. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (k) as discussed above.
[0153] In an embodiment, applying the configuration may cause the UE to enter a connected DRX active time after a GNSS measurement gap for the GNSS measurement with a length of DRX on-duration timer or a DRX inactivity timer. In this case, the indication may indicate the Behavior (l) as discussed above.
[0154] FIG. 4 is a flow chart depicting an exemplary method performed at a network node, such as an eNB, according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. At block 410, the network node transmits to a UE, a triggering command for triggering a GNSS measurement. The triggering command comprises an indication indicating a configuration, having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE, to be applied by the UE in case that the GNSS measurement fails and a GNSS validity duration of the UE associated with an earlier GNSS measurement is valid. In some embodiments, the configuration having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE may indicate whether uplink transmission of the UE is allowed.
[0155] In some embodiments, the triggering command is transmitted in case that a GNSS position fix of the UE is invalid. The indication indicates that the uplink transmission of the UE is not allowed. In an embodiment, the triggering command may be transmitted in response to a misalignment of uplink transmission of the UE. In an example, the network node may detect a misalignment of uplink transmission which is caused due to that the GNSS position fix of the UE is invalid, and then trigger a transmitting of a GNSS measurement triggering command.
[0156] The configuration indicated by the indication in the triggering command may define application of one or more behaviors of the UE, such as the any one of Behaviors (a) through (e) or any combination of Behaviors (a) through (e) as discussed above. In an embodiment, the configuration may cause the UE to move to a RRC idle state from a RRC connected state. In another embodiment, the configuration may prohibit all uplink transmissions of the UE. In yet another embodiment, the configuration may prohibit all uplink transmissions of the UE except for uplink transmission related to a report of a failure of the GNSS measurement. Then, the network node may further receive from the UE, the report of the failure of the GNSS measurement. The triggering command may comprise information related to an uplink resource for transmission of the report. Alternatively or additionally, the network node may transmit pre-configuration information related to an uplink resource for transmission of the report of the failure of the GNSS measurement to the UE, via a RRC signaling.
[0157] In an embodiment, the configuration may cause the UE to perform an additional GNSS measurement autonomously. The triggering command may indicate a number of additional GNSS measurements allowed to be performed autonomously.
[0158] In an embodiment, the configuration may cause the UE to monitor a downlink control channel, for receiving another triggering command for triggering an additional GNSS measurement, in case that the GNSS measurement fails and the GNSS validity duration is valid. The configuration may further cause the UE to receive the another triggering command without transmitting a feedback for the receipt of the another triggering command. The triggering command may further indicate information related to a period for monitoring the downlink control channel, after which the UE would move to a RRC idle state or perform an additional GNSS measurement autonomously in case that no triggering command for triggering an additional GNSS measurement is received during the period. In an example, the network may determine that the GNSS measurement fails; and then transmit the another triggering command to the UE. For example, the network node may receive a report of the GNSS measurement failure. In another example, the network node may deduce the GNSS measurement failure due to not receiving a new GNSS validity duration from the UE. The additional triggering command may comprise information related to an uplink resource for transmission of a report of a result of the additional GNSS measurement. Alternatively or additionally, the network node may transmit pre-configuration information related to an uplink resource for transmission of a report of a result of the additional GNSS measurement to the UE, via a RRC signaling.
[0159] In some embodiments, the triggering command is transmitted in case that a GNSS position fix of the UE is valid. The indication indicates that the uplink transmission is allowed. In an embodiment, the triggering command may be transmitted in response to at least one of: receiving from the UE an indication that uplink data to be transmitted from the UE requires a transmission period of time longer than a first threshold; or a determination that downlink data to be transmitted to the UE requires a transmission period of time longer than a second threshold. In an example, the network node may receive an indication of pending uplink data from the UE, and determine that the pending uplink data would require a repetition period, which is longer than the first threshold so that the GNSS validity duration would expire during the repetition period. In another example, the network node may have already scheduled a repetition period for downlink or uplink transmission of the UE, and determine that the repetition period is longer than the second threshold so that the GNSS validity duration would expire during the repetition period.
[0160] The configuration indicated by the indication in the triggering command may define application of one or more behaviors of the UE, such as the any one of Behaviors (f) through (l) or any combination of Behaviors (f) through (l) as discussed above.
[0161] In an embodiment, the network node may further determine that the GNSS measurement fails in case that no report of a result of the GNSS measurement is received from the UE in a pre-configured resource.
[0162] In an embodiment, the network node may receive from the UE, a report of a failure of the GNSS measurement. The report may comprise a new GNSS validity duration. Based on the new GNSS validity duration, the network node may determine that the GNSS measurement fails. Then, the network node may transmit to the UE, another triggering command for triggering an additional GNSS measurement.
[0163] In an embodiment, the configuration may cause the UE to perform the uplink transmission after receiving a confirmation for the report from the network node; or to perform the uplink transmission after transmitting the report. In another embodiment, the configuration may cause the UE to perform the uplink transmission after a network-configured period from a beginning or end of a GNSS measurement gap for the GNSS measurement.
[0164] In an embodiment, the configuration may cause the UE to perform an additional GNSS measurement autonomously. The configuration may cause the UE to perform an uplink transmission by using the GNSS validity duration in case that the additional GNSS measurement fails.
[0165] In an embodiment, the network node may receive from the UE, a request for an additional GNSS measurement. In response to the request, the network node may transmit to the UE, another triggering command for triggering an additional GNSS measurement.
[0166] In an embodiment, the configuration may cause the UE to enter a connected discontinuous reception (DRX) active time after a GNSS measurement gap for the GNSS measurement with a length of DRX on-duration timer or a DRX inactivity timer.
[0167] With the methods of FIGs. 3 and 4, the network node (such as eNB) may be enabled to control the UE’s behavior dynamically when triggering a GNSS MG according to a triggering reason or other factors (such as network configuration, resources occupation, etc. ) . Meanwhile, a UE may be enabled to continue uplink transmission if its GNSS position fix is actually valid, in case that a GNSS measurement fails. Meanwhile, it may avoid a case where the UE continues to perform uplink transmission based on an old GNSS validity after a failed GNSS measurement, while the old GNSS validity duration may have become invalid due to UE movement.
[0168] FIG. 5 is a flow chart depicting an exemplary process 500 performed by a UE according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 5, at step 510, a UE receives from an eNB a trigger of GNSS MG. The trigger may be a MAC CE triggering the UE to perform a GNSS measurement. The present disclosure introduces a new indication in the trigger to indicate a configuration, having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE, to be applied by the UE in case that the GNSS measurement fails and a previous GNSS validity duration of the UE associated with an earlier GNSS measurement is valid. The configuration having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE indicates whether uplink transmission of the UE is allowed.
[0169] At step 520, the UE fails to acquire GNSS position fix in the triggered GNSS MG.
[0170] At step 530, the UE determines if a previous GNSS validity duration expired. The GNSS validity duration is associated with a latest success GNSS measurement. In case that the previous GNSS validity duration expired, the UE may move to a RRC Idle state as shown as step 540.
[0171] In case that the previous GNSS validity duration is not expired, the UE may determine whether uplink transmission is allowed per the configuration indicated by the new indication, as shown at step 550.
[0172] If it is determined that uplink transmission is not allowed, the UE applies the configuration having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE in accordance with the indication, as shown at step 560. For example, the configuration may be at least one of the following: any uplink transmission is prohibited (561) ; transmit an uplink report of a GNSS measurement failure (562) ; perform an autonomous GNSS measurement (563) ; monitor PDCCH for a new aperiodic GNSS MG trigger, without sending an uplink HARQ feedback for a receipt of the new trigger (564) ; and move to RRC Idle state (565) .
[0173] If it is determined that uplink transmission is allowed, the UE applies the configuration having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE in accordance with the indication, as shown at step 570. For example, the configuration may be at least one of the following: transmit an uplink report of GNSS measurement failure (571) ; request a new GNSS measurement gap for an additional GNSS measurement (572) ; monitor PDCCH for a new aperiodic GNSS MG trigger without an uplink HARQ feedback for a receipt of the new trigger (573) ; and receive from the eNB another trigger of a new GNSS measurement gap (574) .
[0174] FIG. 6 is an exemplary signaling flow 600 depicting an exemplary procedure according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 6, at step 610, a network node 602 (such as an eNB) sends a triggering command for GNSS measurement to a UE 601. A flag defining one or more behaviors to be performed by a UE in case of GNSS measurement failure is included into the triggering command. For example, the flag indicates one of the following two options / configurations: Option 1: uplink transmission is not allowed; Option 2: uplink transmission is allowed.
[0175] At step 620, the UE 601 detects a failure in the triggered GNSS measurement.
[0176] At step 630, the UE 601 determines that a GNSS validity duration associated with an earlier GNSS measurement is still valid.
[0177] Then the UE 601 applies a configuration having an effect on uplink transmission of the UE in accordance with the flag received at step 610. In this regard, the UE may check whether the flag indicates Option 1 or Option 2.
[0178] In a scenario, it may be determined that the flag indicates Option 1 as shown at step 640. Then, in an embodiment, the UE 601 may monitor for another triggering command for a new GNSS MG, as shown at step 641. At another hand, the network node 602 may check if the UE 601 provide a new GNSS validity duration, so as to determine if the GNSS measurement triggered in step 610 fails. As an example, the network node 602 may determine that the GNSS measurement fails in case that the UE 601 do not provide a new GNSS validity duration, as shown at step 642. Then, the network node 602 transmits to the UE 601 another triggering command for a new GNSS MG, as shown in step 643. When the another triggering command is received by the UE 601, the UE 601 may be configured according to the flag to refrain from transmitting a HARQ feedback for the another triggering command, as shown at step 644.
[0179] In another scenario, it may be determined that the flag indicates Option 2 as shown at step 650. In one embodiment, the UE 601 may report a failure of the triggered GNSS measurement or request a new GNSS MG for trigger an additional GNSS measurement, as shown at step 651. Then, the network node 602 may transmits to the UE 601 another triggering command for a new GNSS MG, as shown in step 652.
