Description

CUP AND OPENABLE CAPSULE FOR PREPARING BEVERAGES DESCRIPTION

[0001] The present invention relates to an openable cup for a capsule, and a related capsule, for preparing beverages from insoluble powders.

[0002] Specifically, the present invention relates to a cup for a capsule for packaging concentrated products (e.g., in the form of an insoluble powder or insoluble granules) in predetermined, single-use doses for the impromptu preparation of beverages (such as tea, coffee, herbal tea, milk, chocolate, etc.) by means of the introduction, inside said capsule, of a pressurized fluid (mostly hot water) that passes through the insoluble powder, extracting the essence and aroma thereof.

[0003] These known capsules contain a prepackaged single-use dose of the substance to be extracted, enclosed in a container, called a cup, made of plastics material and closed by a lid.

[0004] Different types of automatic or semi- automatic beverage preparation machines exist. The operating principle common to these machines provides for piercing the lid of the capsule and injecting the pressurized fluid inside the cup, which fluid passes through the insoluble food powder contained in said cupresulting in the preparation of the beverage. In such automated machines, the beverage is brewed without piercing the bottom of the cup, the cup being in fact provided with an outlet duct, called a nozzle. This type of capsule in fact provides internal opening means (e.g., by piercing, tearing, or detachment of an inner sealing disc) that are activated when a certain level of pressure inside the cup is reached.

[0005] As is known, for the recycling of coffee capsules it is important to separate the different materials to facilitate the subsequent processing thereof. Normally capsules for coffee obtained from insoluble food substances comprise at least one cup made of plastics material, closed at the top by a lid, inside which there is ground coffee to be extracted. For the correct recycling of the plastics part, it is essential to remove the coffee grounds present within the cup at the end of the beverage extraction. However, extracting the coffee from the spent capsule is not easy because the coffee is wet and sticks to the walls of the cup.

[0006] Several solutions for openable capsules are known in the sector, i.e., those equipped with devices that allow the capsule to be torn at least partially in order to be able to access it more easily and thusremove the coffee grounds. An example of such known capsules is described in the prior document EP 2 662 313 Al, aimed at a capsule with an upper lid provided with a tab to facilitate gripping and detaching the lid from the cup. In this way, after using the capsule, the lid may be removed and the coffee grounds may be easily extracted from the cup and disposed of separately. A similar solution is known in the prior document WO 2015 / 140691 Al, which describes a capsule provided with a tearable flange on which a lid is fixed. The flange has a weakening that facilitates the tearing and separation, together with the lid, from the rest of the cup. Also in this case, after using the capsule, the lid and flange may be removed and the coffee grounds may be easily extracted and disposed of separately. Document WO 2022 / 101530 Al also relates to an openable capsule, this time provided with a tear-off tab which, starting from the flange and passing through the revolution axis of the capsule until reaching the flange on the opposite side, allows the cup to be divided into two equal parts, facilitating the bulk extraction of the coffee grounds.

[0007] In the known solutions mentioned above, the tearing means which allow the cup to be opened are all located on, or involve in some way, the lid and theflange. This may cause undesirable effects on the weld between the lid and flange, with the risk of delamination of the lid. This occurs more frequently in capsules for preparing beverages from insoluble food powder, which require a higher working pressure than capsules with soluble food powder. It is indeed the high pressure that leads to the delamination of the lid, i.e., to the separation of the different layers that compose it, especially in proximity to the welding edge of the cup-shaped body, where high tension peaks are recorded. As a result of this process, there is a "fraying" of the various layers that leads to the lid tearing or detaching from the cup body resulting in leakage of liquid from the upper part of the capsule. Thus, non-compliant capsule brewing occurs because liquid spills from the upper part still end up inside the coffee cup, negatively affecting the quality of the extraction .

[0008] The object of the present invention is to provide a cup for a capsule, and a related capsule, for preparing beverages which solves the drawbacks of the prior art while taking into account the needs of the sector.

[0009] The object of the present invention is to make a cup for a capsule for preparing beverages, whichmay be opened after use to allow efficient disposal of the various parts that compose it.

[0010] In particular, the object of the present invention is to make a cup for a capsule for preparing beverages that may be opened at the end of brewing to allow the extraction of the coffee grounds and that is at the same time capable of withstanding high pressure without the risk of delamination.

[0011] This object is achieved by a cup for a capsule for the preparation of soluble beverages according to claim 1, as well as by a capsule according to claim 14. The dependent claims describe preferred embodiments of the invention.

[0012] The features and advantages of a cup and a capsule for the preparation of soluble beverages according to the present invention will appear more clearly from the following description, made by way of an indicative and non-limiting example according to the accompanying figures, wherein:- Fig. 1 is a sectional view of an openable capsule for preparing beverages according to the present invention;- Fig. 2a and 2b are an axonometric view from below of a capsule for preparing beverages according to the present invention, in a closed, pre-extractionconfiguration and in an open, post-extraction configuration, respectively;- Fig. 3a and 3b show a cup for a capsule for preparing beverages according to the present invention, in a sectional view and in a view from below, respectively;- Fig. 4a and 4b show the step of fixing a foil to the bottom of the cup of Fig. 3a, in a sectional view and in a view from below, respectively;- Fig. 5 shows a detail of Fig. 4a, and in particular a foil welding zone on the cup;- Fig. 6a and 6b show the step of opening the capsule of Fig. 2 post-brewing, in a sectional view and in a view from below, respectively.

[0013] With reference to the accompanying figures, the reference numeral 2 denotes a cup for a capsule 1 for preparing beverages.

[0014] The capsule 1, shown by way of example in Fig. 1, comprises a body called a cup 2 suitable for defining an inner volume V for containing at least one insoluble substance 11 to be infused, typically in powder or granular form.

[0015] The cup 2 is a single body. The cup 2 may be made of different materials, for example plastics material or cellulose or aluminum, and with differentproduction methods, for example by molding, for example by injection or co-injection, or by thermoforming or deep-drawing.

[0016] The cup 2 is provided on one side with a bottom 3 and on the opposite side with an inlet opening 21 defined by an externally protruding edge 4 called a flange.

[0017] The capsule 1 comprises a lid 6 that is fixed, by gluing or welding, at the upper edge 4, which lid is suitable for sealing the cup 2 at the top.

[0018] The cup 2 is provided externally, at the bottom 3, with an outlet opening 31 which is defined by a duct 32 called a nozzle, which is suitable for allowing the beverage to flow out.

[0019] The cup 2 comprises, below the edge 4, a side wall 21, preferably a frustoconical wall, followed by at least one stepped portion 23, preferably a consecutive pair of stepped portions 23, and ends with a lower portion 24, substantially funnel-shaped, provided with the opening 31.

[0020] The cup 2 is provided internally, at the bottom 3, with an inner base 33 having at least one ridge protruding vertically towards the inside of the cup 2, in the direction of the lid 6.

[0021] The base 33 comprises a peripheral edge 360,defined by a ridge, on which a sealing disc 5 is fixed by gluing or welding. The peripheral edge 360 of the inner base corresponds to the plane of a stepped portion 23 of the cup 2, and in particular to the plane of a lower stepped portion 23.

[0022] The cup 2, and therefore the capsule 1, is internally provided with a sealing disc 5, placed at the base 33 and suitable for sealing the cup 2 at the bottom. The capsule 1 is then provided with a closed chamber 12, defined at the top by the lid 6 and at the bottom by the disc 5, within which the substance 11 is contained. The disc 5 is positioned beneath the substance 11.

[0023] The disc 5 has barrier properties, preferably to gases and vapor.

[0024] The disc 5 may be made of different materials, for example plastics material or cellulose or aluminum, and with different production methods.

[0025] The disc 5 may be multi-layer or single- layer.

[0026] In one embodiment, the disc 5 is fixed at the peripheral edge 360 of the base 33 in an at least partially yielding manner, so as to detach at least partially therefrom due to the increase in pressure within the cup 2.

[0027] In a further exemplary embodiment, the disc 5 is permanently fixed at the peripheral edge 360 and is preferably provided with weakenings (e.g., pre-cuts) so as to tear at least partially due to the increase in pressure within the cup 2.

[0028] In yet another embodiment example, the disc 5 is permanently fixed at the peripheral edge 360 and the cup 2 is provided, internally at the bottom 3, with piercing or tearing means suitable for piercing or tearing the disc 5 due to the increase in pressure within the cup 2.

[0029] The base 33 is provided with tips suitable for at least partially piercing the disc due to the increase in pressure within the volume V.

[0030] In use, the capsule 1 is inserted into a special seat provided in the extraction machine, which pierces the lid 6 and introduces a pressurized fluid (mostly hot water) into the inner volume V in which the food substance is contained. The pressure exerted by the fluid inside the capsule 1 rises until it reaches a certain threshold level, or opening pressure, which pushes on the disc 5 to tear it in the case of the disc with weakenings, to detach it from the peripheral edge 360 on which it is fixed in the case of the disc fixed in a yielding manner, or to pierce it against the tipsof the base 33 where present.

[0031] Preferably, the base 33 comprises further ridges, made in one piece with the cup 2 or as a discoidal insert arranged below the disc 5, inside the lower funnel portion 24.

[0032] The base 33 comprises preferably a central portion 310, defined by a ridge, covering the outlet opening 31. The central portion 310 is provided with at least one connection opening 311 between the inside of the cup 2 and the outlet opening 31, in order to allow the beverage to flow towards the outside of the capsule 1. Preferably, the central portion 310 comprises a plurality of connecting openings 311.

[0033] Preferably, the base 33 comprises a labyrinth 30 suitable for defining a tortuous path that reduces the passage of the infused beverage towards the nozzle 32 when the pressure inside the capsule 1 drops below a threshold value or ceases altogether when the capsule 1 is disengaged from the infuser assembly of the machine. The labyrinth 30 comprises, from a plurality of ridges defining therebetween channels with a reduced section, channels closed at the top by the disc 5.

[0034] Preferably, the disc 5 is fixed to the edge 360, to the labyrinth 30, and to the central portion

[0035] Preferably, the bottom 3 comprises a plurality of fins 333 protruding at the bottom, uniformly distributed along the circumference. As may be seen in Fig. 2a, the fins 333 extend from the duct 32. These fins 333 allow the pressure of the beverage extraction step to be uniformly discharged directly onto the bottom of the extraction chamber of the machine, avoiding unwanted deformations of the cup 2.

[0036] For the recycling of the coffee capsules it is important to separate the different materials to facilitate the subsequent processing thereof. It is therefore essential to remove the coffee grounds present within the cup 2 at the end of the extraction of the beverage. The capsule 1 that is the object of the present invention is an openable capsule, i.e., provided with devices that allow the cup 2 to be opened at least partially in order to be able to more easily access it and thus remove the coffee grounds, as seen in Fig. 6a.

[0037] As may be seen in Fig. 3b, the cup 2 has, at the bottom 3, at least one weakening line 9 which defines a separable portion of the cup, as may be seen in Fig. 2b and 6b. The weakening line 9 is arranged on the cup portion 2 that defines the closed chamber 12, i.e., between the lid 6 and the disc 5. In this way,the cup 2 is opened at the inner volume V in which the substance 11 is contained.

[0038] Preferably, the weakening line 9 is arranged in correspondence with a plane of a stepped portion 23 of the cup 2, and in particular with the plane 231 of the upper stepped portion 23. Advantageously, this solution facilitates the production of the cup 2 insofar as the plane 231 is an easily machinable surface and may be easily arranged in contact with an abutment stop.

[0039] The weakening line 9 of the cup 2 is preferably a through cut, i.e. it completely passes through the thickness of the wall of the cup 2. This solution already allows a clear separation of a portion of the cup 2 with respect to the rest of the body of the capsule. Advantageously, with this technical solution the force required by the user to open the cup 2, and therefore the capsule 1, is not particularly high, and the opening of the cup 2 occurs in an optimal way.

[0040] In a further exemplary embodiment, the weakening line 9 is a partial cut, i.e., it only partially passes through the thickness of the wall of the cup 2.

[0041] In a different exemplary embodiment, theweakening line 9 is a reduction in the thickness of the wall of the cup 2.

[0042] The weakening line 9 of the cup 3 is preferably continuous. Advantageously, with this technical solution the force required by the user to open the cup, and therefore the capsule 1, is not particularly high and the opening of the cup 2 occurs in an optimal way.

[0043] In a further exemplary embodiment, the weakening line 9 of the cup 3 is discontinuous.

[0044] The weakening line 9 of the cup 3 has an at least partially circular or a circular extension. Thus, the separable portion of the cup 2 has a substantially discoidal shape.

[0045] Preferably, the weakening line 9 of the cup 3 has only a partially circular extension, as seen in Fig. 3b, so as to leave a joining portion 91 which forms a connection hinge between the cup 2 and the separable portion. Advantageously, such a solution makes it possible not to lose portions of the cup 2, and therefore of the capsule 1.

[0046] With reference to Fig. 6a, the joining portion 91 consists of the plane of the upper stepped portion 23 without a weakening line 9.

[0047] Preferably, the cup 2 is provided externallywith a foil 95 having a grippable edge 951 to allow the application of a tensile force on the separable portion of the cup 2. In this way, the foil 95 may be separated at least partially, together with the bottom 3, from the rest of the cup 2, as seen in Fig. 2b.

[0048] Preferably, the foil 95 has an annular shape.

[0049] Preferably, the foil 95 has at least one tab 952 protruding with respect to the circumference thereof to make the edge more grippable, as seen for example in Fig. 2a.

[0050] The foil 95 may be made of different materials, for example of plastics material or cellulose or aluminum, and with different production methods.

[0051] The foil 95 may be multi-layer or singlelayer.

[0052] The foil 95 is permanently fixed to the cup 2, at the bottom 3, in particular downstream of the weakening line 9. Preferably, the foil 95 is permanently fixed to the cup 2 by means of a first permanent welding line 97.

[0053] Preferably, the first welding line 97 has a circular extension.

[0054] Preferably, the foil 95 has barrier properties, for example to gases and vapor, and isarranged to at least partially cover the weakening line 9.

[0055] Preferably, the foil 95 has barrier properties and completely covers the weakening line 9. This solution is particularly advantageous in the case of a weakening line 9 in the form of a through cut. The barrier foil 95, by covering the through cut 9, ensures the sealing of the closed chamber 12 in which the food powder is contained.

[0056] Preferably, the foil 95 is also removably fixed to the cup 2 at the bottom 3, in particular upstream of the weakening line 9. This solution is particularly advantageous in the case of a weakening line 9 in the form of a through cut. The foil 95, being fixed to the cup 2 both upstream and downstream of the through cut 9, ensures the sealing of the closed chamber 12 in which the food powder is contained.

[0057] Preferably, the foil 95 is removably fixed to the cup 2 by means of a second, yielding or peelable welding line 99. Advantageously, with this technical solution the force required by the user to open the capsule 1 is not particularly high.

[0058] Preferably, the second welding line 99 has a circular extension.

[0059] The cup 2 is used to make a capsule 1 forpreparing beverages from an insoluble powder (for example coffee or tea).

[0060] Preferably, the capsule 1 for coffee comprises a filter 51 fixed beneath the substance 11 just above the disc 5.

[0061] Preferably, the capsule 1 for coffee further comprises a permeable or micro-perforated film 52 fixed at a certain distance above the substance 11.

[0062] The present invention therefore relates to a cup 2 for a capsule for preparing beverages, provided with a side wall 21 ending on one side in a bottom 3 with an outlet opening 31 and, on the opposite side, ending in an externally protruding edge 4 and defining an inlet opening 21. The cup is internally provided with a sealing disc 5 fixed to a peripheral edge 360. The cup (2) is characterized in that it comprises, at the bottom 3 and above the sealing disc 5, a weakening line 9 suitable for allowing a partial separation of the bottom 3 from the side wall 21.

[0063] The present invention therefore relates to a method for producing a cup 2 for a capsule 1 for preparing beverages, comprising the steps of:- providing a cup 2 provided with a side wall 21 on one side ending in a bottom 3 with an outlet opening 31 and on the opposite side ending in an edge 4 externallyprotruding and defining an inlet opening 21;- fixing a sealing disc 5 inside the cup 2 on a peripheral edge 360;- making a weakening line 9 at the bottom 3 and above the sealing disc 5 (Fig. 3a and 3b).

[0064] The preferred exemplary embodiment of the cup 2 according to the present invention is shown in Fig. 4b. In this example, the cup 2 has a weakening line 9 in correspondence with the plane 231 of the upper stepped portion 23. The weakening line 9 is circular and is a through cut that completely passes through the thickness of the wall of the cup 2. The weakening line 9 has a partially circular extension and leaves a joining portion 91, which forms a hinge connecting the cup 2 and the separable portion. The cup 2 is provided with an annular foil 95, with barrier properties, to cover the weakening line 9. The foil 95 is permanently fixed to the cup 2, downstream of the weakening line 9, by means of a first circular and permanent welding line 97. The foil 95 is removably fixed to the cup 2, upstream of the weakening line 9, by means of a second circular and yielding welding line 99. In use, it is possible for a user to squeeze the edge 951, or the tab 952 where present, of the foil 95 between two fingers of the hand (e.g., thumb and indexfinger) and to exert tensile force designed to produce the yielding of the second welding line 99 and the partial separation of the bottom 3, together with the foil 95, from the rest of the cup 2 of the capsule 1. In this way, the capsule 2 is open at one of its closed ends, and in particular at the bottom 3, and it is therefore possible to access the closed chamber 12 in which the food powder is contained. The spent coffee may then be easily extracted from the capsule and disposed of separately from the rest of the capsule 1 structure.

[0065] The method for producing the cup 2 in its preferred exemplary embodiment described above is as follows:- producing a cup 2 provided with a bottom 3 and, on the opposite side, an opening 21 defined by an externally protruding edge 4; the cup 2 comprising, at the bottom 3: an upper stepped portion 23, a lower stepped portion 23, a lower funnel portion 24 provided with an outlet opening 31; the cup 2 comprising, internally, a peripheral edge 360 at the lower stepped portion 23, and a plane 231 at the upper stepped portion 23;- fixing, internally to the cup 2, on the peripheral edge 360, a sealing disc 5 (Fig. 3a and 3b); preferablyfixing, inside the cup 2, a filter 51 just above the disc 5;- making a weakening line 9 in correspondence with the plane 231 of the upper stepped portion 23, this weakening line 9 being a through cut with a partially circular extension that leaves a joining portion 91 (Fig. 3a and 3b);- applying, to cover the weakening line 9, an annular foil 95, with barrier properties (Fig. 4a and 4b);- fixing the foil 95 to the cup 2: downstream of the weakening line 9, by means of a first circular and permanent welding line 97; upstream of the weakening line 9, by means of a second circular and yielding welding line 99 (Fig. 5).

[0066] The term "permanent weld" refers to a weld that does not yield, i.e. is capable of withstanding a high tensile force, indicatively of between 25 and 60 N / 15mm.

[0067] The term "yielding weld" means a weld that yields, i.e. is capable of withstanding a low tensile force, indicatively of between 5 and 10 N / 15mm.

[0068] The capsule 1, in the various embodiments thereof, may be used for the impromptu preparation of beverages by means of automatic or semi-automaticmachines provided with a brewing assembly suitable for producing a beverage by the passage of pressurized hot water through the capsule 1.

[0069] A capsule according to the present invention may be used for packaging concentrated products (in the form of powder or granules or leaves) in predetermined, single-use doses, for the impromptu preparation of beverages such as leaf tea, coffee, herbal teas, or other products from insoluble food substances.

[0070] Innovatively, a cup according to the present invention allows a capsule to be made for the preparation of beverages that may be opened after its use to allow efficient disposal of the various parts that compose it.

[0071] Advantageously, a cup according to the present invention allows a capsule to be made that may be easily opened at the end of brewing to allow easy extraction of the coffee grounds.

[0072] Advantageously, a cup according to the present invention allows a capsule to be made that is able to withstand high pressure without the risk of delamination. In fact, unlike the solutions of the state of the art, the means which allow the cup to open (i.e., the weakening line) are not located on and do not in any way involve the lid and the flange. Thisarrangement prevents interference in the welding between the lid and flange, avoiding the risk of delamination of the lid.

[0073] Advantageously, a cup according to the present invention is provided, in a preferred exemplary embodiment, with means that allow a simple and comfortable opening of the cup due to a weakening line in the form of a through cut, while ensuring the sealing of the chamber in which the food substance is contained by virtue of a barrier foil placed to completely cover the through cut .

[0074] It is clear that those skilled in the art may make changes to the cup and the capsule for preparing soluble beverages described above, all falling within the scope of protection as defined by the following claims.
