Abstract
Description
System For Predetermining An Incident Between A Vehicle And A StructureTECHNICAL FIELD[1] The present invention relates to a system for predetermining system for predetermining an incident between a vehicle and a structure that the vehicle intends to pass under, over and / or through.BACKGROUND[2] Any references to methods, apparatus or documents of the prior art are not to be taken as constituting any evidence or admission that they formed, or form part of the common general knowledge.[3] Collisions with structures, such as overpasses and bridges, for example, are a common occurrence that cause significant delays along busy traffic routes and damage to critical infrastructure that can cause prolonged road closures and require expensive repairs to vehicles, equipment and infrastructure. These collisions can also result in significant injuries to the driver, pedestrians and other drivers, and even death.[4] While it is clear that collision mitigation is important, implementation can be difficult and unreliable.[5] Some attempts to address the problem include water curtains that deploy when a vehicle trips a laser sensor for being overheight, audible measures in the form of a pipes hanging over a road leading to a structure that the vehicle will impact if the vehicle is overheight or warning signs and / or flashing lights designed to attract the driver’s attention. These attempts have done little to mitigate impacts with bridges and other structures.[6] There are numerous technical problems to be overcome in order to implement a successful collision mitigation system. Namely, accurately detecting vehicle and / or load height and dimensions, processing data in real-time, effectively communicating warnings, triggering preventative measures, ensuring system reliability, and integrating with existing infrastructure and the interaction of these factors makes it difficult.[7] For example, accurate height detection is crucial to prevent collisions. Traditional methods like laser sensors or cameras can be used, but they need toprovide precise measurements under various weather and lighting conditions. The system must account for factors like vehicle load, suspension compression, and the possibility of uneven road surfaces.[8] Furthermore, detecting vehicle height is not enough; the data needs to be processed quickly to assess whether a collision risk exists. This requires efficient algorithms that can process incoming data rapidly, especially in high-traffic areas where numerous vehicles pass through.[9] Once an over-height vehicle is detected, there needs to be a reliable communication system in place to alert the driver and, if necessary, nearby authorities. This might involve using visual signals, audible warnings, or even communication with traffic management centres. The challenge here is ensuring timely and clear communication that the driver can understand and respond to.
[0010] In some cases, the system might need to trigger preventative measures automatically, such as lowering barriers, activating warning signs with flashing lights, or even deploying water curtains. These measures should activate only when necessary to avoid unnecessary disruptions to traffic flow and prevent undesired problems such as traffic accidents.
[0011] As will be readily recognised from the above, there is a need for an improved structure collision mitigation system.SUMMARY OF INVENTION

[0033] Figures 1 to 8 illustrate a system 10 for predetermining an incident between a vehicle 110 and a structure 11 that the vehicle intends to pass under, over and / or through based on a current direction of travel. The structure is located on a road and may take the form of an overhead structure, a bridge, a tunnel, an overpass, an underpass or any other type of structure that a vehicle passes under and / or through.
[0034] The system 10 allows for the detection and / or avoidance of a collision or incident with a structure 11 by a vehicle 110 or mobile plant.
[0035] The system 10 includes an incident sensing assembly 100 configured to detect that the vehicle 110 will collide with the structure 11 based on a current route of the vehicle 110.
[0036] The incident sensing assembly 100 is configured to detect that the vehicle will collide with the structure 11 based on the route of the vehicle without knowing and / or entering a destination (or end destination or desired destination) of the vehicle 110. As such, the incident sensing assembly 100 does not receive and / or is not programmed with a destination of the vehicle 110. Furthermore, the incident sensing assembly does not predetermine a route of the vehicle to reach a destination. The incident sensing assembly 100 monitors the route or path being travelled by thevehicle 110 rather than relying on a predetermined travel route to reach a destination.
[0037] The system 10 also includes a structure database 115 storing structure data 104 indicating at least a height of one or more structures and a location of each of the one or more structures, including height data and location data for the structure.
[0038] In some embodiments, the structure database 115 also includes a width of the one or more structures in the form of width data 104a and / or a load limit (weight limit) of the one or more structures in the form of load data 104b.
[0039] The structure database 115 is wirelessly updateable. In some embodiments, the structure database 115 is updateable based on
[0040] The incident sensing assembly 100 includes a communication device 120 locatable in the vehicle 110. The communication device 120 may take the form of an aftermarket device that is located within the vehicle and connected to the electronics and control mechanisms of the vehicle or an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) device integrated with the onboard computer and electronics of the vehicle.
[0041] The communication device 120 is configurable with vehicle height data 102 relating to the vehicle 110. The vehicle height data 102 relates to the maximum height of the vehicle 110 and / or a load or trailer connected to or mounted on the vehicle 110. The communication device is configured to interface with an application installed on a computing device, such as a smartphone, and accept update commands from the application to update the vehicle height data 102.
[0042] The communication device 102 may also be configurable with vehicle weight data 102a corresponding to a vehicle weight (or vehicle and load weight) and / or vehicle dimension data 102b corresponding one or more dimensions of the vehicle, including height, width and / or length.
[0043] In some embodiments, the communication device 102 may include dynamic load monitoring to monitor and update the weight data in real-time.
[0044] The communication device 120 is also configured to receive vehicle location data 103 to determine the route of the vehicle as it approaches a structure that it will collide with.
[0045] In the illustrated embodiment, the communication device 120 is configured with a global positioning system or to communicate with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device connected to the vehicle to receive the vehicle location data or communicate directly with a GPS satellite 121 to receive GPS data. To communicatewith the GPS satellite directly, the communication device 120 may include a GPS receiver 122 which allows the communication device 120 to generate the GPS data determine a location of the vehicle and determine a travel direction of the vehicle therefrom. In some embodiments, the travel direction may be determined exclusively from the GPS data. In such embodiments, the travel direction may be determined by comparing GPS data at a present time t to GPS data obtained at times t-1,etc.
[0046] In some embodiments, the communication device 120 determines the travel direction of the vehicle dynamically based on real-time GPS data, wherein the system operates independently of a predetermined route or end destination, and calculates the vehicle's projected path solely based on its current location determined exclusively using GPS data and direction of movement.
[0047] The communication device 120 is also configured to access the structure database 115 to thereby access structure data 104 indicating at least a height of one or more structures (height data) and a location of each of the one or more structures (location data). The structure data 104 includes height data and location data for the structure on the route of the vehicle.
[0048] If the communication device 120 determines that a collision will occur if the vehicle 110 attempts to pass under the structure 11, the communication device 120 issues one or more electronic signals to control the vehicle 110 and / or a device connected to the vehicle (such as a display unit). This will be described further below.
[0049] In use, the communication device 120 accesses the structure database 115 and identifies the structure on the route of the vehicle from one or more structures within a detection area configured about the vehicle 110.
[0050] After identifying the structure, the communication device 120 determines whether the vehicle will collide with the identified structure on the route of the vehicle based on the structure data, the direction of travel and the vehicle height data 102 when the vehicle is less than a first distance (indicated by circle D1) from the structure. As noted above, the system 10 does not have a predetermined route of travel for the vehicle to reach a destination and thus the route of the vehicle as used herein consists of a projected path of the vehicle within the detection area.
[0051] In some embodiments, the system continuously monitors real-time vehicle and structure data, dynamically recalculating collision and overweight risks as thevehicle approaches the structure based on updated GPS coordinates, vehicle sensor data, and real-time wireless structure updates.
[0052] In response to detecting that a collision will occur if the vehicle attempts to pass under the structure, the communication device 120 generates an alert within the vehicle when the vehicle is less than the first distance from the structure.
[0053] The communication device 120 is also configured to control the vehicle to activate a first braking system of the vehicle to reduce acceleration when the vehicle is less than a second distance (indicated by circle D2) from the structure, wherein the second distance is less than the first distance.
[0054] The communication device 120 is also configured to controls the vehicle to activate a service brake or park brake system to stop the vehicle when the vehicle is less than a third distance (indicated by circle D3) from the structure, wherein the third distance is less than the second distance.
[0055] The communication device 120 then generates detour instructions around the identified structure when the vehicle is less than the first distance from the identified structure but greater than the second distance from the identified structure.
[0056] The detour instructions include instructions to return the vehicle to the road on which the identified structure is located, or a directly connected adjacent road, on an opposite side of the identified structure based on the direction of travel.
[0057] In some embodiments, the communication device 120 generates real-time detour instructions based on the vehicle's current location and direction, wherein the system dynamically reroutes the vehicle around the identified structure and returns the vehicle to the original road after bypassing the structure, without requiring a precalculated or predefined route. The original road (or route) being the road on which the vehicle travels immediately before rerouting the vehicle and based on the vehicle’s current location and direction.
[0058] In some embodiments, the communication device 120 is configured to control the vehicle by activating and / or deactivating one or more parts of the vehicle 11. For example, the communication device 120 may be configured to control the vehicle by activating and / or deactivating the brake and / or an accelerator of the vehicle 11.
[0059] As set out elsewhere, the communication device 120 is further configured to determine the route of the vehicle 110. The route of the vehicle 110 may be based on an expected travel path of the vehicle 110. In some embodiments, the expected travel path of the vehicle may be based on the current direction (the travel direction)of the vehicle, including the road currently being travelled on, and possible alternative routes (such as turns that could be taken to deviate from the current road and / or direction, for example) Additionally, or alternatively, in some embodiments, the route of the vehicle is based on a current location of the vehicle, and takes into account the direction of travel of the vehicle and movement of the vehicle.
[0060] Based on the vehicle location data 103, the communication device 120 determines whether the vehicle 110 will collide with the structure 11 on the route of the vehicle based on the height of the structure 11 on the route of the vehicle, the vehicle height data 102 and a proximity of the vehicle 110 to the structure 11.
[0061] In some embodiments, the communication device 120 receives the vehicle location data 103 and monitors the location of the vehicle 110 to determine if the vehicle 110 is approaching a structure 11. In response to determining that the vehicle 110 is approaching a structure 11, the communication device 120 initiates a determination of whether the vehicle 110 will collide with the structure 11.
[0062] In one embodiment, the communication device 120 determines whether the vehicle 110 is approaching the structure 11 and is within a proximity threshold (stored in proximity data 106) of the structure 11 before determining whether the vehicle 110 will collide with the structure 11 on the route of the vehicle 110 based on the height of the structure 11 on the route of the vehicle 110 and the vehicle height data 102. In one example, the proximity threshold may be 1000m so that the vehicle must be determined to be approaching the structure (i.e. travelling towards or in the direction of the structure) and no more than 1000m away from the structure before the communication device 120 determines whether the vehicle will collide with the structure 11 based on the vehicle height data 102 and the structure data 104. In some embodiments, the proximity threshold may be between 200m and 1500m.
[0063] The structure data 104 can be stored remotely (e.g. in the cloud 105) from the communication device 120 (see Figures 1 and 4) or locally / onboard (e.g. in storage in the vehicle 110) on a storage medium of the communication device 120 (see Figures 2 and 3).
[0064] The vehicle height data 102 is stored in the memory of the communication device 120 and is rewritable. Allowing the vehicle height data 102 to be rewritable provides for changes to the stored vehicle height if a maximum height of the vehicle (or more particularly, a trailer or load connected to the vehicle) should change.
[0065] In some embodiments, the communication device 120 includes a SIM or eSIM that can be used to obtain and / or supplement vehicle location data 103 from the GPS system but also to update structure data 104 that may be stored locally.
[0066] In use, there is a method 300 of predetermining an incident between a vehicle and a structure that the vehicle intends to pass under, over and / or through includes, at step 302, configuring an incident sensing assembly 100 having a communication device 120 to detect that the vehicle will collide with the structure based on a route of the vehicle.
[0067] The incident sensing assembly 100 is not provided with a destination of the vehicle 110. Additionally, or alternatively, the incident sensing assembly 100 does not predetermine or pre-plan a route of the vehicle to reach a destination.
[0068] Next, at step 304, the communication device 120 is located in the vehicle 110.
[0069] At step 306, the communication device 120 is then configured with the vehicle height data 102 of the vehicle 110.
[0070] As the vehicle 110 travels along a route, the communication device 120 monitors for the vehicle 110 approaching a structure 11 based on the vehicle location data 103 and determines whether the vehicle will pass under or over the structure 11. In the present embodiment, if the vehicle will pass over the structure, no action is taken by the communication device 120.
[0071] At step 308, after it has been determined that the vehicle 110 is approaching a structure 11 and will attempt to pass under the structure 11 , the communication device 120 accesses the structure data 104 indicating at least a height of one or more structures 11 and a location of each of the one or more structures 11 and, at step 310, determines whether the vehicle 110 will collide with the structure 11 on the route of the vehicle 110 based on, at least, the height of the structure 11 on the route of the vehicle 110 and the vehicle height data 102.
[0072] At step 312, in response to determining that a collision will occur if the vehicle 110 attempts to pass under the structure 11 , the communication device 120 generates an alert within the vehicle and / or controls the vehicle to activate a braking system of the vehicle to prevent a collision. To generate the alert and / or control the vehicle 110, the communication device 120 issues one or more electronic signals suitable to control the vehicle 110 and / or a device connected to the vehicle 110 (such as a display unit).
[0073] If no collision is detected to occur, the communication device 120 continues to monitor the location of the vehicle 110 awaiting the vehicle 110 to approach another structure.
[0074] The communication device 120 includes suitable hardware and software for performing the above determination, including, but not limited to, memory for storing the relevant vehicle height data, vehicle width data, vehicle dimension data and structure data, and instructions for determination whether the vehicle will collide with the structure and a processor for executing those instructions.
[0075] In some embodiments, the communication device 120 may also access the structure database 115 to obtain width data 104a and / or load data 104b.
[0076] If the communication device 120 determines whether the vehicle will attempt to pass under or under the identified structure and whether a collision or overweight condition will occur if the vehicle 110 attempts to pass over or under the structure 11 , the communication device 120 issues one or more electronic signals to control the vehicle 110 and / or a device connected to the vehicle (such as a display unit). This will be described further below.
[0077] In use, the communication device 120 accesses the structure database 115 and identifies the structure on the route of the vehicle from one or more structures within a detection area configured about the vehicle.
[0078] After identifying the structure, the communication device 120 determines whether the vehicle will collide with and / or cause an overweight condition on the identified structure on the route of the vehicle based on the structure data 104, the direction of travel and the vehicle height data 102, vehicle weight data 102a and / or vehicle dimension data 102b when the vehicle is less than a first distance from the structure. As noted above, the system 10 does not have a predetermined route of travel for the vehicle to reach a destination and thus the route of the vehicle as used herein consists of a projected path of the vehicle within the detection area.
[0079] In some embodiments, the system defines a detection area dynamically sized and shaped based on vehicle speed, direction, and environmental conditions, providing early and accurate identification of potential collision hazards within a safe stopping distance.
[0080] In some embodiments, the system defines a detection area around the vehicle that dynamically adjusts based on vehicle speed and proximity to one or more structures, calculating the projected path of the vehicle within this area in realtime. The system reroutes the vehicle around any detected structure and directs it back to the original road (associated with the projected path) upon clearing the structure, ensuring continuity of the journey without deviation to alternative routes.
[0081] In response to detecting that a collision and / or overweight condition will occur if the vehicle attempts to pass over or under the structure, the communication device 120 generates an alert within the vehicle when the vehicle is less than the first distance from the structure.
[0082] The communication device 120 is also configured to control the vehicle 110 to activate a first braking system of the vehicle 110 to reduce acceleration when the vehicle 110 is less than a second distance from the structure 11 , wherein the second distance is less than the first distance.
[0083] The communication device 120 is also configured to control the vehicle 110 to activate a service brake or park brake system to stop the vehicle 110 when the vehicle 110 is less than a third distance from the structure 11, wherein the third distance is less than the second distance.
[0084] The communication device 120 then generates detour instructions around the identified structure 11 when the vehicle 110 is less than the first distance from the identified structure 11 but greater than the second distance from the identified structure 11.
[0085] The detour instructions include instructions to return the vehicle 110 to the road on which the identified structure is located, or a directly connected adjacent road, on an opposite side of the identified structure 11 based on the direction of travel. This allows the vehicle to continue on its journey with minimal interruption.
[0086] Thus, in some embodiments, the system described herein can prevent both collisions caused by attempting to pass under structures and collisions and / or overweight conditions associated with passing over a structure.
[0087] In a specific example, in the event that a vehicle approaches a low-clearance bridge, the system first identifies the structure within a dynamically calculated detection area based on the vehicle’s current speed and direction. Without relying on a predefined destination or route, the system calculates a detour around the structure, bypassing the obstacle and subsequently guiding the vehicle back to the original road. Unlike conventional systems, which rely on pre-programmed routes, the present invention adapts to changing environmental and road conditions, providing a seamless return to the original route after obstacle avoidance.
[0088] Embodiments of the present system do not require predefined points of interest or prior knowledge of structure locations. Instead, embodiments identify and react to structures in real-time based on current GPS data and continuously updated information about the vehicle’s location and movement, dynamically generating detour instructions around the structure and returning the vehicle to the same road.
[0089] In use, there is a method 400 of predetermining an incident between a vehicle and a structure that the vehicle intends to pass under, over and / or through includes, at step 402, configuring an incident sensing assembly 100 having a communication device 120 to detect that the vehicle will collide with and / or cause an overweight condition on the structure based on a route of the vehicle.
[0090] The incident sensing assembly 100 is not provided with a destination of the vehicle 110. Additionally, or alternatively, the incident sensing assembly 100 does not predetermine or pre-plan a route of the vehicle to reach a destination.
[0091] Next, at step 404, the communication device 120 is located in the vehicle 110.
[0092] At step 406, the communication device 120 is then configured with the vehicle height data 102, the vehicle weight data 102a and the vehicle dimension data 102b.
[0093] As the vehicle 110 travels along a route, the communication device 120 monitors for the vehicle 110 approaching a structure 11 based on the vehicle location data 103 and determines whether the vehicle will pass under or over the structure 11. At step 408, after it has been determined that the vehicle 110 is approaching a structure 11, the communication device 120 accesses the structure data 104 providing at least a height of one or more structures 11 (height data), a width of the one or more structures (width data), a load limit of the one or more structures (load data) and a location of each of the one or more structures 11 and, at step 410, determines whether the vehicle 110 will collide with or cause an overweight condition of the structure 11 on the route of the vehicle 110 based on the height, weight and / or load limit of the structure 11 on the route of the vehicle 110 and one or more of the vehicle height data 102, the width data and the load data.
[0094] The determination of a collision or overweight condition may include a clearance parameter to ensure the vehicle will safely pass over or under the structure. The clearance parameter is an additional amount to be added to the vehicle height, weight or other dimensions to provide greater clearance between the structure limitations and lower the risk of a collision or damage.
[0095] In some embodiments, if the vehicle is determined to be passing under the structure, vehicle weight data and / or structure load limit data may be disregarded or not accessed. In some embodiments, if the vehicle is determined to be passing over the structure, vehicle height data and / or structure height data may be disregarded or not accessed
[0096] At step 412, in response to determining that a collision or overweight condition will occur if the vehicle 110 attempts to pass over or under the structure 11 , the communication device 120 generates an alert within the vehicle and / or controls the vehicle to activate a braking system of the vehicle to prevent a collision. To generate the alert and / or control the vehicle 110, the communication device 120 issues one or more electronic signals suitable to control the vehicle 110 and / or a device connected to the vehicle 110 (such as a display unit).
[0097] If no collision is detected to occur, the communication device 120 continues to monitor the location of the vehicle 110 awaiting the vehicle 110 to approach another structure.
[0098] In Figure 8, two identical vehicles 110a, 110b approach a structure 11a in the form of an overpass having two roads running orthogonally with one road passing over the other.
[0099] One of the vehicles 110a is approaching the structure 11a and will pass under one road (the underpass) while the other vehicle 110b will travel over one road (the overpass). In both cases, a communication device 120 of each vehicle with detect that the corresponding vehicle is approaching the structure 11a.
[0100] The communication device 120 of vehicle 110a will determine that the vehicle 110a will pass under the structure 11a and access the structure database 104 to determine whether the vehicle 110a will collide with the structure 11a based on the vehicle height data and / or vehicle dimension data and the height of the structure and, in some embodiments, the width of the structure 11a. As vehicle 110a passes under the structure 11a, the communication device 120 determines that it is not necessary to access the load data. The communication device 120 may access the width data of the structure in some embodiments as the vehicle may be too wide to pass under the structure 11a in some instances.
[0101] The communication device 120 of vehicle 110b will determine that the vehicle 110a will pass over the structure 11a and access the structure database 104 to determine whether the vehicle 110a will collide with the structure 11a and / or causean overweight condition of the structure 11a based on the vehicle width / dimensions data, the vehicle weight data and the load limit and width of the structure 11a. For vehicle 110b, the communication device 120 determines that the vehicle height and height of the structure do not need to be considered and therefore does not determine whether the vehicle 110b will collide with the structure 11a based on height data.
[0102] The communication device 120 includes suitable hardware and software for performing the above determination, including, but not limited to, memory for storing the relevant vehicle height data and structure data, and instructions for determination whether the vehicle will collide with the structure and a processor for executing those instructions.
[0103] In some embodiments, the communication device is configured with a variable clearance parameter. The variable clearance parameter may be used to enhance safety when the vehicle approaches structures.
[0104] The variable clearance parameter may provide a margin of safety based on a predefined height or dimension and introduces the capability to adjust the safety margin in real-time, taking into account various factors that may influence collision risks.
[0105] In some embodiments, the variable clearance parameter may be responsive to changing conditions. For example, if a vehicle encounters adverse weather conditions, such as heavy rain or snow, which can reduce visibility and affect the road's surface, the communication device can automatically increase the clearance parameter. This added margin ensures that the vehicle has a safer distance from the structure, reducing the risk of collision during challenging weather conditions.
[0106] Similarly, the variable clearance parameter can adapt to different road types. When a vehicle transitions from a smooth highway to a bumpy or uneven road surface, the communication device can account for potential variations in vehicle height due to suspension compression. By dynamically adjusting the clearance parameter, the system maintains an accurate safety margin, preventing false alarms or missed collision risks.
[0107] Additionally, the variable clearance parameter allows for customized settings based on specific scenarios or user preferences. Drivers and fleet operators can set the variable clearance parameter according to their unique requirements. For example, when transporting oversized loads or driving through areas with knownlow-clearance structures, users can increase the safety margin to ensure extra protection against collisions.
