Abstract
Description
[0001] TITLE OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Increased Density Heat Exchanger Coil Topology
[0003] CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0004] Thie application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 584,779 filed September 22, 2023.
[0005] TECHNICAL FIELD
[0006] The present disclosure relates generally to heat exchangers and more specifically relates to high density heat exchangers, such as for use with data centers.
[0007] BACKGROUND
[0008] Datacenters have ever-rising heat density, requiring thermal systems to provide increased cooling density. Additionally, recent trends toward multi-story datacenters require higher heat rejection per footprint. Furthermore, emerging edge applications, such as containerized systems, similarly require more densely packaged cooling solutions. Both the outdoor (heat rejection) and indoor (cooling) heat exchanger coils can benefit from any improvements in density and footprint.
[0009] As shown in FIG. 1 , a flat coil would provide a cooling area equal to its footprint. As shown in FIG. 2, a “V” coil improved on the flat coil and could have a cooling area that is twice its footprint with a 60 degree angle between subcoils, or coil panels. As shown in FIG. 3, a “V” coil could have a cooling area that is four times its footprint with a 30-degree angle between sub-coils, or coil panels. As shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, the cooling area of a “V” coil (Av) can be calculated with the following formula, wherein W is the coil width, H is the coil height and a is the exterior angle of the coil relative to horizontal:
[0010] Formula #1 : Av = 2(W x H) / sin(a)
[0011] When viewed from the side, as shown in FIG. 7, a “V” coil could use triangular block-offs to ensure air flows through the coils. As shown in FIG. 8, multiple “V” coils can be combined for increased cooling area, however that increases the footprint of the system. Taller “V” coils could be used to increase cooling area, while keeping the footprint the same, but that can increase the overall size of the system. Thus, there remains a need for new topology and methods to increase heat exchanger density, for condensers, evaporators, and dry coolers, helping to address this growing need for increased cooling density in a variety of applications.
