Given the rapid development in communications, there will of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which the present disclosure may be embodied. It should not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.
[0041] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device accesses the network and receives services therefrom. The network device may refer to a base station (BS) or an access point (AP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , an NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a Remote Radio Unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a relay, an Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) node, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) or non-ground network device such as a satellite network device, a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite and a geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO) satellite, an aircraft network device, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology. In some example embodiments, radio access network (RAN) split architecture comprises a Centralized Unit (CU) and a Distributed Unit (DU) at an IAB donor node. An IAB node comprises a Mobile Terminal (IAB-MT) part that behaves like a UE toward the parent node, and a DU part of an IAB node behaves like a base station toward the next-hop IAB node.
[0042] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. The terminal device may also correspond to a Mobile Termination (MT) part of an IAB node (e.g., a relay node) . In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.
[0043] As used herein, the term “resource, ” “transmission resource, ” “resource block, ” “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink resource, ” or “downlink resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, or any other combination of the time, frequency, space and / or code domain resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, unless explicitly stated, a resource in both frequency domain and time domain will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.
[0044] As used herein, the term “quality of experience (QoE) ” used herein may refer to a comprehensive measurement of customer satisfaction levels. It considers everything from consumer personalities and moods to the quality of the product itself -including whether or not it lives up to customer expectations. The term “area scope information” used herein may refer to information indicating a certain area within which QoE can be measured. The term “area scope checking” used herein may refer to a procedure where a terminal device checks whether it locates in the certain area where QoE can be measured.
[0045] As used herein, the term “radio resource control (RRC) connected state” or “RRC connected mode” or “connected state” used herein may refer to a state in which service radio bearer and data radio bearer are allocated for the terminal device. The term “RRC idle state” or “RRC idle mode” or “idle state” used herein may refer to a state where the terminal device is switched on but does not have any established RRC connection. The term “RRC inactive state” or “RRC inactive mode” or “inactive state” used herein may refer to a state when there is an RRC connection that has been suspended. The term “access stratum (AS) layer” used herein may refer to a functional layer in wireless telecom protocol stacks between radio network and user equipment. The term “application (APP) layer” used herein may refer to a component within an application that controls the communication method to other devices.
[0046] As mentioned above, QoE can be applied to MBS. MBS may be provided to a terminal device which is in idle state or inactive state via broadcast. In this case, the radio access network (RAN) is not aware of location of the terminal device which is in idle state or inactive state when the terminal devices receive broadcast service and perform the QoE measurement. If the location of the terminal device is within the area scope defined for QoE measurements collection, the terminal device may start or continue the QoE measurement. If the location of the terminal device is out of the area scope, the terminal device may not start the QoE measurement. In some solutions, the terminal device may handle the area scope checking for MBS when the terminal device is in inactive / idle state.
[0047] In addition, the area scope of QMC can be provided to a network device over NGAP signaling, even a location filter which includes the area scope information has been provided to the terminal device in an application layer. From network device point of view, the network device has no idea whether the location filter has been provided to the terminal device in the application layer since it is transparent to the network device. Therefore, the network device cannot exactly know whether the network device needs to transmit the area scope information to the terminal device via RRC message based on the area scope of QMC. In some unexpected cases, the network device may send the area scope information to the terminal device even the location filter has been provided to the terminal device in the application layer, which may cause unnecessary duplication as both AS layer and APP layer perform the area scope checking at the same time. Therefore, it needs to study how the terminal device can avoid AS layer and APP layer perform the area scope check at the same time. Further, it also needs to determine whether the network device needs to transmit the area scope information to the terminal device via RRC message when it receives the area scope of QMC from NGAP signaling.
[0048] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for the area scope checking for device in an idle state or inactive state. In particular, a network device transmits a first configuration for a first layer at the first device to a terminal device. The network device forwards a second configuration comprising a configuration of quality of experience for a second layer at the first device to the terminal device. The terminal device determines a target layer from the first and second layers based on one or more of: whether the first configuration or the second configuration comprises area scope information for the quality of experience, or priority information between the first and second layers. In this way, it can avoid AS layer and APP layer performing the area scope check at the same time.
[0049] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the communication environment 100 which can be a radio access network , a plurality of communication devices, including a first device 110 and a second device 120, can communicate with each other. The communication environment 100 also includes a third device 130. In some example embodiments, the third device 130 may be an entity in a core network.
[0050] The first device 110 may be configured with a plurality of signaling layers, including a first layer 1101 and a second layer 1102. The first layer 1101 may refer to as an access stratum (AS) 1101 (also referred to as an AS layer) , and the second layer 1102 may refer to as an application layer (AL) 1102 hereinafter. In some example embodiments, the AS 1101 may support communications between the first device 110 and a RAN such as the second device 120 or an AS function of a device via a radio frequency (RF) channel. An application or a server such as a service server may be executed by the AL 1102.
[0051] In some example embodiments, interactions between the AS 1101 and AL 1102 are supported. For example, the AS 1101 may provide information or message (s) to the AL 1102. The AL 1102 may also provide information or message (s) to the AS 1101. By way of example, the interactions between the AS 1101 and AL 1102 may be implemented via an attention (AT) command.
[0052] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first device 110 operating as a terminal device and the second device 120 operating as a network device. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.
[0053] In some example embodiments, if the first device 110 is a terminal device and the second device 120 is a network device, a link from the second device 120 to the first device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , and a link from the first device 110 to the second device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the first device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the first device 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the second device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .
[0054] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.
[0055] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Reference is now made to FIG. 2, which illustrates a signalling flow 200 for the area scope checking for device in an idle state or inactive state according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signalling flow 200 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1, for example, by using the first device 110, the second device 120 and the third device 130.
[0056] The third device 130 transmits (2010) a message to the second device. In other words, the second device 120 receives the configuration form the third device 130. For example, the message may be transmitted via NGAP signalling.
[0057] In some embodiments, the message may include area scope information to the second device 120. For example, the area scope information which can be used by a terminal device in connected state may be provided to the second device 120 via “Area Scope of QMC” information element (IE) . In some example embodiments, the area scope information may be indicated in a format of a cell list. For example, the cell list may be up to 32 cells. Alternatively, the area scope information may be indicated in a format of tracking area (TA) list. In some other embodiments, the area scope information may be indicated in a format of public land mobile network (PLMN) list. Table 1 below shows an example of information element (IE) of the area scope information message, where “M” represents mandatory, and “O” represents optional. The IEs in table 1 can be read by the second device 120.
[0058] Table 1
[0059] The message may also include a configuration of QoE to the second device 120. For example, the message may include a container for the configuration of QoE. In some example embodiments, the configuration of QoE may be obtained from a network management entity. Table 2 below shows an example of information element (IE) of the container for the configuration of QoE. The IE in table 2 is transparent to the second device 120.
[0060] Table 2
[0061] The third device 130 may also transmit an indication (for example, a first indication or a second indication) regarding whether the area scope information is allowed / able to be included in a first configuration for the first layer 1101 or a second configuration for the second layer 1102. In other words, the second device 120 may receive the indication from the third device 130. For example, the indication may be included in the area scope information.
[0062] In some example embodiments, the indication (may also be referred to as “first indication” ) may indicate whether the area scope information is able / allowed to be used for the area scope checking in UE (i.e., in the first device 110) . For example, the indication may indicate that the area scope information is not able to be used for the area scope checking in UE. By way of example, the indication may indicate “false” or a predefined value (such as “0” ) . In this case, the configuration of QoE may include the area scope information. For example, the third device 130 may include an IE “LocationFilter” within the QoE configuration container. A presence of the IE “LocationFilter” may indicate the geographic area (s) or location (s) where quality metric collection is requested. The LocationFilter element may include one or more instances of any combination of targeted cell-IDs, polygons and circular areas. Each cell-ID entry in LocationFilter is announced in cellList, and each polygon and circular area entry is announced in the polygonList or and circularAreaist elements, respectively.
[0063] Alternatively, the indication may indicate that the area scope information is able to be used for the area scope checking in UE (i.e., in the first device 110) . By way of example, the indication may indicate “true” or a predefined value (such as “1” ) . In this case, the configuration of QoE may not include the area scope information. For example, the third device 130 may not include an IE “LocationFilter” within the QoE configuration container. If the IE “LocationFilter” is not present, quality metric collection may be requested regardless of the device’s location. In this way, it can avoid the area scope checking in the second layer 1102 as well as duplicated area scope information transfer to first device 110.
[0064] In some other embodiments, the indication (may also be referred to as “second indication” ) may indicate whether the configuration of QoE includes the area scope information. For example, the indication may be a flag on whether the LocationFilter has been included within QoE configuration container. In this case, if the configuration of QoE includes the area scope information, the third device 130 may transmit the indication that indicates the configuration of QoE includes the area scope information, for example, the flag being set to “true” or a predefined value (such as “1” ) . Alternatively, if the configuration of QoE does not include the area scope information, the third device 130 may transmit the indication that indicates the configuration of QoE does not include the area scope information, for example, the flag being set to “false” or a predefined value (such as “0” ) . In this way, it can avoid the area scope checking in the second layer 1102 as well as duplicated area scope information transfer to first device 110.
[0065] The second device 120 determines (2025) whether the area scope information for QoE is included to the first configuration based on the indication from the third device 130. In this way, the duplicated area scope information delivered from network (from application server or from gNB) can be avoided.
[0066] Alternatively, or in addition, the second device 120 determine whether the area scope information for QoE is included to the first configuration based on a predetermined criteria for the area scope checking. In this way, the area scope checking for the device in RRC idle and inactive state can be supported in a simple way.
[0067] The second device 120 transmits (2030) the first configuration to the first device 110. In other words, the first device 110 receives the first configuration from the second device 120. Details of the first configuration will be described later. The second device 120 transmits (2040) the second configuration to the first device 110. In other words, the first device 110 receives the second configuration from the second device 120. Details of the second configuration will be described later. The first configuration and the second configuration may be transmitted through Uu interface between the second device 120 and the first device 110, for example, in a RRC message.
[0068] In some example embodiments, if the first indication indicates that the area scope information is able to (shall or allowed to) be used for the area scope checking (for example, the first indication is set to “true” ) , the second device 120 may include the area scope information to the first configuration. In this case, the transmitted (2030) first configuration may include the area scope information. Additionally, the transmitted (2040) second configuration may not include the area scope information, if the first indication indicates that the area scope information is able / allowed to be used for the area scope checking.
[0069] Alternately, if the first indication indicates that the area scope information is not able to (not allowed / shall not) be used for the area scope checking (for example, the first indication is set to “false” ) , the second device 120 may determine not to include the area scope information to the first configuration. In this case, the transmitted (2030) first configuration may not include the area scope information. Additionally, the transmitted (2040) second configuration may include the area scope information, if the first indication indicates that the area scope information is not able / allowed to be used for the area scope checking.
[0070] In some other example embodiments, if the second indication indicates that there is no area scope information in the configuration of quality of experience (for example, the second indication is set to “false” ) , the second device 120 may include the area scope information to the first configuration. In this case, the transmitted (2030) first configuration may include the area scope information. Additionally, the transmitted (2040) second configuration may not include the area scope information, if the second indication indicates that the area scope information is not included in the second configuration.
[0071] Alternatively, if the second indication indicates that the configuration of quality of experience includes the area scope information (for example, the first indication is set to “true” ) , the second device 120 may determine not to include the area scope information to the first configuration. In this case, the transmitted (2030) first configuration may not include the area scope information. Additionally, the transmitted (2040) second configuration may include the area scope information, if the second indication indicates that the area scope information is included in the configuration of quality of experience.
[0072] In some example embodiments, the predetermined criteria for the area scope checking may indicate the second configuration includes the area scope information. In this case, the second device 120 may determine not to include the area scope information to the first configuration. In this case, the transmitted (2030) first configuration may not include the area scope information. Additionally, the transmitted (2040) second configuration may include the area scope information. For example, the predetermined criteria may indicate that for QoE configuration to be used in RRC Idle and inactive, the LocationFilter is mandatory to be included in the QoE configuration container. In this case, if the third device 130 indicates Area Scope of QMC to the second device 130 via NGAP signaling, the second device 120 may not transmit the area scope information to the first device 110, which means the first configuration does not include the area scope information.
[0073] Alternatively, the predetermined criteria for the area scope checking may indicate the first configuration includes the area scope information. In this case, the second device 120 may include the area scope information to the first configuration. The transmitted (2030) first configuration may include the area scope information. For example, the predetermined criteria may indicate that when the third device 130 indicates Area Scope of QMC to gNB via NGAP signaling, the second device 120 should always transmit the area scope information to the first device 110 via RRC message for QoE configuration to be used in RRC idle and inactive state.
[0074] The first device 110 determines (2060) a target layer from the first layer 1101 and the second layer 1102 based on one or more of: the first configuration comprises area scope information for the quality of experience, the second configuration comprises area scope information for the quality of experience, or priority information between the first and second layers. In some example embodiments, the priority information may be configured by the second device 120. Alternatively, the priority information may be predefined at the first device 110.
[0075] The target layer may perform the area scope checking for the quality of experience, for example, when the first device 110 is in RRC idle state or inactive state. For example, if the area scope information includes a cell list, the target layer may determine whether the cell where the first device 110 locates is in the cell list. In this case, if the cell is in the cell list, the QoE measurement can be performed and reported to the second device 120.
[0076] In some example embodiments, the first layer 1101 may be prioritized over the second layer 1102. For example, if the first configuration includes the area scope information and the first layer 1101 has a higher priority than the second layer 1102, the first layer 1101 may perform (2070) the area scope checking. In this case, the first layer 1101 may transmit (2080) an indication that informs the second layer 1102 to skip the area scope checking for the QoE. For example, if the first layer 1101 receives the area scope information via RRC message, the first layer 1101 may perform the area scope checking when the first device 1101 is in RRC idle state or inactive sate. The first layer 1101 may transmit a AT command to the second layer 1102 to inform the second layer 1102 that no area scope checking should be done in the second layer 1102 (even if LocationFilter has been received it should be ignored) .
[0077] In some other embodiments, if the first configuration includes the area scope information and regardless of whether the second configuration comprising the area scope information, the first layer 1101 may perform (2070) the area scope checking. In this case, the first layer 1101 may transmit (2080) the indication that informs the second layer 1102 to skip the area scope checking for the QoE.
[0078] In some further example embodiments, if the first configuration includes the area scope information and there is no area scope information in the second configuration, the first layer 1101 may perform (2070) the area scope checking. In this case, the first layer 1101 may transmit (2080) the indication that informs the second layer 1102 to skip the area scope checking for the QoE.
[0079] Alternatively, the second layer 1102 may be prioritized over the first layer 1101. For example, if the second configuration includes the area scope information and the second layer 1102 has a higher priority than the first layer 1101, the second layer 1102 may perform (2070’) the area scope checking. In this case, the second layer 1102 may transmit (2080’) an indication that informs the first layer 1101 to skip the area scope checking for the QoE. For example, if the second layer 1102 decodes the LocationFilter successfully, the second layer 1102 may perform the area scope checking. The second layer 1102 may transmit a AT command to the first layer 1101 to inform the first layer 1101 that no area scope checking should be done in the first layer 1101 (even if area scope information has been received via RRC message) .
[0080] In some example embodiments, if the second configuration comprises the area scope information for the quality of experience, there is no area scope information for the quality of experience in the first configuration. In this case, the second layer 1102 may perform (2070’) the area scope checking. The second layer 1102 may transmit (2080’) the indication that informs the first layer 1101 to skip the area scope checking for the QoE.
[0081] In some other example embodiments, if the second configuration includes the area scope information and there is no area scope information in the first configuration, the second layer 1102 may perform (2070’) the area scope checking. The second layer 1102 may transmit (2080’) the indication that informs the first layer 1101 to skip the area scope checking for the QoE.
[0082] According to example embodiments of the present disclosure, the area scope checking for UE is in RRC IDLE and INACTIVE can be supported in a flexible way. With the introduction of the indicator from core network (CN) to RAN, the NW can control the UE’s AS layer or APP layer should perform the checking. The duplicated area scope information delivered from network to UE (e.g., from application server / configuration server to UE or from gNB to UE) can be avoided. The area scope checking can be performed either in UE AS layer or APP layer. The duplicated check in both AS and APP layer can be avoided. Further, according to some other embodiments of the present disclosure, the area scope checking for device is in RRC IDLE and INACTIVE can be supported in a simple way.
