[0040] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown in FIG. 1, the communication network 100 may comprise a first apparatus 110 which may be, for example, a first apparatus 110. In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may also be discussed as a terminal device (e.g., a UE) .

[0041] The communication network 100 may further comprise a second apparatus 120, which may be, for example, a second apparatus 120. In some example embodiments, the second apparatus 120 may be discussed as a network device (e.g., a BS, a gNB, or an eNB) . As shown in FIG. 1, the second apparatus 120 may be hosted in a satellite 102 (regenerative architecture) or relayed through a satellite 102 (transparent architecture) . A part of the second apparatus 120 that hosted in the satellite 102 may communicate with the other part of the second apparatus 120 on earth via a transport network node, e.g., a gateway (GW) 130.

[0042] The first apparatus 110 may communicate with the second apparatus 120 within a coverage 101 of the second apparatus 120, for example, the geographical area of the first apparatus 110 is served by a satellite beam or cell from the second apparatus 120. For purpose of discussion, the coverage 101 is also referred to a serving cell 101, which may be, for instance, an NTN cell.

[0043] The communication network 100 may be an NTN network or a network with NTN structure. There may be different types of satellite orbits that have been studied for NTN access including Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites which orbit at approximately 600 km above the Earth. During the Rel-16 study item the typical beam footprint size for a LEO satellite was assumed to be between 100-1000 km radius. So, one LEO satellite can cover a very large area on the Earth.

[0044] Due to the low altitude the satellites move with a speed about 7.5 km / srelative to Earth. In 3GPP Earth-fixed cells (EFC) and Earth-moving cells (EMC) are considered. The former entails the satellite continuously adjusts the satellite beam pointing direction to fix the cell and beam to a specific point on Earth, while the latter option entails the satellite beam pointing direction is fixed and thus the beam footprint (i.e., cell) is moving on Earth. In EMC-based NTN the mobility is mainly due to satellite movement as they move much faster than UEs on the ground.

[0045] It is to be understood that the number of network devices and terminal devices shown in FIG. 1 is given for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations. The communication network 100 may include any suitable number of network devices and terminal devices.

[0046] In some example embodiments, links from the second apparatus 120 to the first apparatus 110 may be referred to as a downlink (DL) , while links from the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 120 may be referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second apparatus 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the first apparatus 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or receiver) . In UL, the first apparatus 110 is a TX device (or transmitter) and the second apparatus 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0047] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0048] As mentioned above, in 3GPP release 18, a work item on enhanced support of internet of things (IoT) over NTN had been discussed. The work item aims to further develop the topic of IoT over NTN proposed in release 17.

[0049] One of the main assumptions for both releases is that the UE is not able to communicate with the NTN system and simultaneously perform GNSS measurements. The latter is needed for the UE to perform pre-compensation of uplink transmissions in terms of time and frequency adjustments. Such pre-compensation is needed, when the NTN system is operating over low-earth orbit satellites, which move about 28,000 km / h  relative to earth. The pre-compensation is based on the UE being aware of the target satellite’s position (via satellite assistance information broadcast in system information block (SIB) and the UE’s own position acquired via GNSS. By calculating the distance between the UE and the satellite and how the distance will change during a transmission, the UE can determine when to transmit.

[0050] The support of NB-IoT &eMTC over NTN was initially made in release 17. The UE is assumed to be equipped with a GNSS to determine its own location. This enables the UE to pre-compensate uplink transmissions in time &frequency domain such that the long propagation distance towards the satellite is accounted for (up to 36000 km for a geo-stationary satellite) . The UE may also account for satellite movement in case of low-earth orbit satellites, since such satellites move with 7.5 km / srelative to Earth.

[0051] The uplink radio frame timing is defined. Transmission of the uplink radio frame number from the UE shall start seconds before the start of the corresponding downlink radio frame at the UE.

[0052] Except for some cases, the range of NTA is: 0≤NTA≤20512.

[0053] For a frame structure type 1, NTA, offset=0, and for a frame structure type 2, NTA, offset=624 unless stated otherwise in Note that not all slots in a radio frame may be transmitted. One example hereof is TDD, where only a subset of the slots in a radio frame is transmitted.

[0054] NTA is defined in different ranges depending on the UE configuration. In case of subslot based transmission, the UE is configured by higher layer signalling a processing timeline and an associated range of timing advance.

[0055] The quantity is derived from the higher-layer parameters TACommon, TACommonDrift, and TACommonDriftVariation if configured, otherwise

[0056] The quantity is computed by the UE based on UE position and serving satellite-ephemeris-related higher-layers parameters if configured, otherwise

[0057] Note the is based on the UE receiving satellite assistance information defining the TA common, while the is based on the UE’s position and ephemeris, which is included in the satellite assistance information.

[0058] One of the work item objectives on IoT support for NTN in the 3GPP release 18 defines as below”

[0059] Table 1

[0060] The 3GPP assumes the UE cannot operate GNSS and IoT NTN simultaneously and therefore RAN1 and RAN2 are specifying GNSS measurement gaps, where the UE can perform the GNSS measurement without monitoring the PDCCH and performing other “3GPP tasks” .

[0061] One agreed approach is that the UE reports the remaining GNSS validity duration. When the duration expires the UE starts an autonomous GNSS measurement to reacquire the GNSS. The duration of the measurement is based on the GNSS position fix time duration. After completing the measurement, the UE reports a new remaining GNSS validity duration such that UE and eNB are aligned in terms of when the next GNSS measurement will happen. The alternative approach is that a GNSS measurement gap is triggered by the eNB based on the reported validity duration.

[0062] Furthermore, RAN1 has agreed the UE may continue to be connected and transmit in uplink after the expiry of the GNSS validity duration if the network allows it. In this case, the UE may still perform the valid UL transmission since network can adjust the timing pre-compensation using the Timing Advance Command, even though the GNSS location is not accurate enough after the validity duration expired. During RAN1 meetings several companies have demonstrated a similar frequency domain adjustment is less critical, because the timing drift is larger.

[0063] Relevant agreements on the topic include as following:

[0064] Table 2

[0065] The topic underlined in the agreement above is the most relevant. As can be noted, the RAN2 has also agreed the UE can use the UE location (acquired via GNSS) to trigger and perform mobility procedures.

[0066] The present disclosure is addressing the below RAN1 agreements, which define the UE’s uplink transmission can be allowed in a duration X after the original GNSS validity duration has expired. Corresponding discussion and agreements are listed as below:

[0067] Table 3

[0068] As the description underlined above, RAN1 discusses whether the extended duration X also corresponds to extended original GNSS validity duration or only allows uplink transmission during X.

[0069] However, this has implications for the RAN2-agreed mobility procedures based on location, because the UE may or may not be allowed to use the location for such mobility procedures if the location is not valid during the extended duration X.

[0070] In this situation, the UE behavior in a period when the validity duration of GNSS information has expired, while a new GNSS measurement has not be started (i.e., the new measurement gap has not started) may need to be further discussed.

[0071] In the present disclosure the UE behavior is defined in the above scenario where the UL transmission is allowed in an extended period after expiry of the original GNSS validity duration.

[0072] Therefore, the present disclosure proposes a mechanism for NTN mobility during extended GNSS validity. The solution is addressing the UL transmission can be allowed in a duration X after original GNSS validity duration expired without GNSS re-acquisition. In this solution, the first apparatus 110 may determine that an uplink transmission from the first apparatus is allowed in an extended duration after an expiry of a GNSS validity duration. The first apparatus 110 may obtain a configuration at least indicating whether an original location of the first apparatus is allowed to be used for a mobility operation of the first apparatus. Further, the first apparatus 110 may perform the mobility operation based on the configuration in the extended duration.

[0073] In this way, this solution may enable the network to control whether the UE applies location-based mobility, when the network allows the UE to continue uplink transmission after expiry of the original GNSS validity duration.

[0074] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below  with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0075] Reference is now made to FIG. 2, which shows a signaling chart 200 for NTN mobility during extended GNSS validity according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 2, the signaling chart 200 involves a first apparatus 110 and a second apparatus 120. For the purpose of discussion, reference is made to FIG. 1 to describe the signaling chart 200. Although a single first apparatus 110 is illustrated in FIG. 2, it would be appreciated that there may be a plurality of terminal devices performing similar operations as described with respect to the first apparatus 110 below.

[0076] As shown in FIG. 2, the first apparatus 110 determines (202) that an uplink transmission from the first apparatus 110 is allowed in an extended duration (i.e., duration X) after an expiry of a GNSS validity duration.

[0077] The UE behaviours are defined when the uplink transmission is allowed in a duration X after the expiry of the original GNSS validity duration. As a starting point, the second apparatus 120 may configure, or the specification may define whether the duration X extends the GNSS validity duration or only allows uplink transmission.

[0078] The first apparatus 110 may obtain (204) a configuration from the second apparatus 120. The configuration may at least indicate whether an original location (i.e., corresponding to the original GNSS validity duration) of the first apparatus 110 is allowed to be used for a mobility operation of the first apparatus 110. In some embodiment, the first apparatus 110 may obtain a configuration at least indicating whether an original location of the first apparatus is allowed to be used for a mobility operation of the first apparatus during the extended duration. In some embodiment, the mobility operation means the mobility operation during the extended duration. As an example, the original location may be the location acquired within the GNSS validity duration. It is to be understood that the configuration may be pre-configured or pre-defined.

[0079] As an option, the configuration may indicate whether the original location of the first apparatus 110 is to be used for the mobility operation associated with a location-based mobility during the extended duration.

[0080] As another option, the configuration may indicate whether the original location of the first apparatus 110 is to be used for the mobility operation associated with a location-based mobility based on pervious (i.e., past) time and frequency synchronization  information.

[0081] As still another option, the configuration may indicate if no radio-based event and / or a time-based event has been configured and if location-based mobility is configured, the first apparatus 110 is allowed to use the original location of the first apparatus 110 for location-based mobility.

[0082] The first apparatus 110 may determine (206) a mobility operation to be applied based on the configuration in the extended duration and performs (208) the mobility operation based on the configuration in the extended duration.

[0083] Hereinafter, in case where a duration X does not extend the GNSS validity duration or the duration X does extend the GNSS validity duration, the first apparatus 110 may use at least one rule indicated in the configuration to determine the mobility operation to be applied.

[0084] In some example embodiments, the configuration indicates the original location of the first apparatus 110 is not to be used during the extended duration. In this case, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the original location is not to be used for the mobility operation associated with the location-based mobility during the extended duration. e.g., until a new GNSS position fix has been acquired by the first apparatus 110.

[0085] In some example embodiments, the configuration indicates the first apparatus 110 may fall back to the mobility operation associated with a radio-based mobility and / or a time-based mobility when the original location is not to be used during the extended duration. This case may also occur when both location and time / radio were configured.

[0086] In some embodiments, the radio-based mobility may be associated with Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) radio measurements. In some other embodiments, the radio-based mobility may be associated with Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ) radio measurements.

[0087] As an option, if no radio-based and / or time-based event are configured, the first apparatus 110 may transmit a request for the radio-based and / or time-based event to the second apparatus 120.

[0088] It is also possible that if no radio-based and / or time-based event are configured, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the mobility operation associated with a radio link failure-based mobility is to be performed. In this case, the first apparatus 110 may  declare Radio Link Failure (RLF) on the serving cell 101 and perform cell reselection afterwards.

[0089] In a case where the configuration indicates whether the original location of the first apparatus 110 is to be used based on pervious time and frequency synchronization information, in some embodiments, the configuration may indicate if at least one timing advance command (TAC) received before the expiry of the GNSS validity duration, the first apparatus 110 may determine whether the original location of the first apparatus 110 is to be used for a mobility operation associated with a location-based mobility during the extended duration.

[0090] Alternatively or additionally, the configuration may indicate a minimum number / apredetermined number of TAC, if the first apparatus 110 determines that the number of at least one TAC received before the expiry of the GNSS validity duration reaches the minimum number / the predetermined number, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the original location is not to be used for a mobility operation associated with a location-based mobility during the extended duration.

[0091] Correspondingly, if no TAC received before the expiry of the GNSS validity duration and / or the number of at least one TAC received before the expiry of the GNSS validity duration does not reach the minimum number / the predetermined number, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the original location is to be used for a mobility operation associated with a location-based mobility during the extended duration.

[0092] In some other example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may obtain a timing advance (TA) adjustment threshold from the configuration. If a TA adjustment accumulated at the first apparatus 110 exceeds the TA adjustment threshold, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the original location of the first apparatus 110 is not to be used for the mobility operation associated with a location-based mobility during the extended duration.

[0093] As an example, the TA adjustment accumulated may be caused by TAC (s) and UE adjustment (based on common or UE specific TA adjustment with assistance of GNSS) . If the TA adjustment accumulated is larger than the threshold, the first apparatus 110 may be not allowed to use the original location of the first apparatus 110 for location-based mobility during the duration X.

[0094] In some further example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may obtain a frequency adjustment threshold from the configuration. If a frequency adjustment accumulated at the first apparatus 110 exceeds the frequency adjustment threshold, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the original location of the first apparatus 110 is not to be used for the mobility operation associated with a location-based mobility during the extended duration.

[0095] As an example, the frequency adjustment accumulated may be caused by UE adjustment (based on common and / or UE specific frequency adjustment with assistance of GNSS) . If the frequency adjustment accumulated is larger than the threshold, the UE is not allowed to use the original UE location for location-based mobility during the duration X.

[0096] Correspondingly, if a TA adjustment accumulated at the first apparatus 110 is lower the TA adjustment threshold and / or if a frequency adjustment accumulated at the first apparatus 110 exceeds the frequency adjustment threshold, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the original location of the first apparatus 110 is to be used for the mobility operation associated with a location-based mobility.

[0097] Furthermore, based on the configuration, if no radio-based and / or time-based event are configured, and a location-based mobility is configured, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the original location of the first apparatus 110 is allowed to be used for the mobility operation associated with the location-based mobility.

[0098] As described above, the first apparatus 110 may use at least one rule indicated in the configuration to determine the mobility operation to be applied in case where a duration X does not extend the GNSS validity duration or the duration X does extend the GNSS validity duration. That is, some of the above UE behaviours according to the configuration may apply when the duration X extends the GNSS validity duration and other of the UE behaviours according to the configuration may apply when the duration X does not extend the GNSS validity duration (i.e., only allows uplink transmission) . It is possible that at least one rule indicated in the configuration to determine the mobility operation to be applied regardless of whether the duration X extends the GNSS validity duration.

[0099] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may determine whether the GNSS validity duration is to be extended in the extended duration. Further, the first  apparatus 110 may apply the configuration based on the determination related to the extension of the GNSS validity duration.

[0100] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may apply the configuration based on whether the extended duration depends on a time alignment timer (i.e., timeAlignmentTimer) or a configured duration (i.e., network-configured Y) by the second apparatus 120.

[0101] Furthermore, it is to be understood that the configuration described in the present disclosure can be the simple yes / no to use the location and also cover the aspects of #TACs, accumulated TAC etc.

[0102] The example embodiments of the present disclosure described above may enable the network to control whether the terminal device applies location-based mobility, when the network allows the terminal device to continue uplink transmission after expiry of the original GNSS validity duration. Furthermore, the example embodiments of the present disclosure may enable the terminal device to determine whether location-based mobility is feasible depending on how past time and frequency synchronization was performed.

[0103] FIG. 3 shows a flowchart of an example method 300 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 300 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0104] At block 310, the first apparatus 110 determines that an uplink transmission from the first apparatus is allowed in an extended duration after an expiry of a GNSS validity duration.
