Description

[0001] Title: Wireless gear shift system for a bicycle

[0002] FIELD

[0003] The disclosure concerns a wireless gear shift system for light human powered vehicles, such as bicycles.

[0004] BACKGROUND

[0005] Wireless gear changing systems for bicycles are known as such for changing gears on a bicycle without use of a wired connection between a gear control device, usually arranged on a handle bar, and a gear changing device, also referred to as gear shift device, usually arranged at a transmission such as a derailleur. Usually, pairing is required between the gear control device and the gear changing device to allow wireless communication.

[0006] EP1475302A1 discloses a bicycle gear shift system comprising a rear derailleur and a front derailleur having a motor to displace a chain in axial direction for shifting gears. The system also includes an electronic control unit for generating a signal requesting displacement of the chain. The information transfer between the various components can be carried out wirelessly, for example with the Bluetooth® protocol. Pairing methods for the Bluetooth® protocol, such as using a pairing button on one or either of the devices to be paired, are known per se.

[0007] US9,540,071B2 discloses a wireless control system for a bicycle, including at least one shift unit generating an input signal when actuated and a master control unit transmitting a shift signal responsive to the input signal. A rear derailleur and front derailleur are provided and include a gear changer control unit. The gear changer control unit receives the shift signal from the master control unit and controls the derailleur corresponding to the received shift signal. The derailleur includes a button which when actuated causes the derailleur to enter a pairing mode.

[0008] However, current pairing methods of electronic gear-shifting systems of bicycles are not convenient and friendly enough for general consumers. For example, the consumer needs to read the instruction guides of the electronic gear-shifting system before they can correctly press a specific button on a bicycle component in a specific manner to complete the pairing operation between the bicycle components.

[0056] According to an aspect is provided a method for, in a wireless gear shift system for a bicycle, controlling a gear shift device having a wireless transceiver. The method comprises in response to a second sensor of the gear shift device detecting a predetermined second signal, the wireless transceiver broadcasting an identification, ID. The ID can be an ID of the gear shift device and / or of the wireless transceiver. The second sensor can e.g. be one or more of a button, switch, velocity sensor, acceleration sensor, torque sensor, sound sensor, light sensor, magnetic sensor, or the like. The second sensor can e.g. be configured to detect a button press, a wake-up state, a sleep state, a rotation of one or more parts of the gear shift device, a forward rotation of one or more parts of the gear shift device, a rearward rotation of one or more parts of the gear shift device, a selected one of the plurality of different selectable transmission ratios, a rotation speed of a vehicle wheel, a vehicle speed, a vehicle direction, an acceleration, a vibration, or the like. The method comprises the wireless device, in response to a first sensor of the wireless device detecting a predetermined first signal, listening for devices broadcasting an ID, receiving the ID broadcast by the wireless transceiver, and storing the received ID in a memory of the wireless device. The first sensor can be one or more of a button, switch, velocity sensor, acceleration sensor, torque sensor, sound sensor, light sensor, magnetic sensor, or the like. The wireless device can be a wireless gear control device, a further wireless gear shift device, a wireless sensor, a wireless actuator, or a wireless external device. The method comprises the wireless device, for controlling the gear shift device, broadcasting a control signal encoded with information representative of the received ID.

[0057] Hence, the wireless device can broadcast a control signal that can be received by any device. Since the control signal is encoded with information representative of the ID of the wireless transceiver, the wireless transceiver can recognize that the control signal is configured to be received and processed by the wireless transceiver. Other wireless devices may also receive the control signal, but can be configured to ignore the control signal if it is not encoded with information representative of their own ID. It is possible that the control signal can only be decoded by the wireless transceiver having the ID corresponding to the information representative of the ID the control signal has been encoded with. In this case, no pairing between the wireless device and the wireless transceiver is required.

[0058] According to an aspect is provided a method for, in a wireless gear shift system for a bicycle, pairing a wireless device with a wireless transceiver associated with a gear shift device. The wireless device can be a wireless gear control device, a further wireless gear shift device, a wireless sensor, a wireless actuator, or a wireless external device. The method comprises the wireless device transmitting a pairing request to the wireless transceiver. The method comprises the wireless transceiver pairing with the wireless device, such that the wireless device is the central and the wireless transceiver is the peripheral, wherein the wireless transceiver stores an ID of the wireless device and / or the gear shift device in a memory of the wireless transceiver. The method comprises automatically unpairing the wireless transceiver and the wireless device. The method comprises the wireless transceiver transmitting a pairing request to the wireless device, and the wireless device pairing with the wireless transceiver, such that the wireless transceiver is the central and the wireless device is the peripheral. Thus, a situation can be attained wherein the wireless transceiver is paired with the wireless device, the wireless transceiver being the central and the wireless device being the peripheral, while the initial pairing request was transmitted by the wireless device. This may allow convenient pairing where user actions may e.g. be taken on the wireless device for starting the pairing process, while nevertheless the wireless transceiver becomes the central and not the peripheral. This may allow pairing where no user action need be taken on the wireless transceiver, while nevertheless the wireless transceiver becomes the central and not the peripheral.

The wireless component can e.g. be, or comprise, a wireless sensor or wireless actuator of the bicycle. The wireless sensor can e.g. be a wireless torque sensor, speed sensor, acceleration sensor, inclination sensor, vibration sensor, light sensor, sound sensor, or the like. The wireless component can e.g. be a wireless brake, a wireless seat post dropper, a wireless electric motor controller, a wireless tire pressure controller, a wireless suspension controller, or the like. The wireless actuator can e.g. be a wireless actuator for a brake, seat post dropper, tire pressure controller, suspension controller or the like.

[0192] DETAILED DSCRIPTION

[0193] Figure 1 shows an exemplary flow chart of a method 100 for, in a wireless system 1 for a bicycle 1000 (see figure 8), pairing a wireless device 2 with a wireless transceiver 4 associated with a component 6. In this example, the wireless system 1 is a wireless gear shift system. Here, the wireless device 2 is a wireless gear control device 2. The wireless gear control device 2 can be a shifter 1024, e.g. mounted to a handlebar 1003. Alternatively, or additionally, the wireless gear control device can e.g. be integrated with an electric derailleur, such as an electric rear derailleur 1031. The component 6 can e.g. be, or comprise, a sensor or actuator of the bicycle. The component 6 can e.g. be a brake, a seat post dropper, an electric motor controller, a tire pressure controller, a suspension controller, or the like. In this example, the component 6 is an actuator 8 of a transmission 10 comprising a plurality of selectable transmission ratios. The wireless transceiver 4 is associated with the component 6. Hence, the component 6 can be controlled wirelessly. In this example, the component 6 and the wireless transceiver 4 are part of a wireless gear change device, such as a wirelessly actuatable internally geared hub transmission 1022.

[0194] For the wireless device 2 to be able to wirelessly control the component 6, it can be required that the wireless device 2 and the wireless transceiver 4 are paired. Thereto, in this example, in step 102 the wireless transceiver 4 transmits an identification, ID. In step 104, the wireless device 2 receives the ID from the wireless transceiver 4. In step 106A, a first sensor 12 of the wireless device 2 detects a predetermined first signal. The first sensor can e.g. be a button on the wireless device 2. Alternatively, or additionally, in step 106B the wireless device 2 receives a predetermined status message from the wireless transceiver 4. In step 108A, in response to the first sensor of the wireless device detecting the predetermined first signal and / or the wireless device receiving the predetermined status message from the wireless transceiver, the wireless device 2 transmits a pairing request to the wireless transceiver 4. Alternatively, in step 108B, in response to the first sensor 12 of the wireless device detecting the predetermined first signal and / or the wireless device receiving the predetermined status message from the wireless transceiver, the wireless device 2 transmits an instruction to transmit a pairing request, to the wireless transceiver 4. In step 110A the wireless transceiver 4 can transmit a pairing response to the wireless device 2. Alternatively, in step 109B the wireless transceiver 4 transmits a pairing request to the wireless device 2, and in step HOB the wireless device 2 can transmit a pairing response to the wireless transceiver 4. Then, the pairing process can be completed.

[0195] It is possible that in step 102 the wireless transceiver 4 automatically and / or repeatedly transmits the ID, e.g. until the wireless transceiver is in a paired state. It is also possible that in step 102 the wireless transceiver 4 automatically and / or repeatedly transmits the status message. The ID can be part of a status message. The wireless transceiver can transmit the ID in response to a second sensor 14 detecting a predetermined second signal. The second sensor 14 can be associated with the wireless transceiver 4 and / or the component 6. The second sensor 14 can e.g. be one or more of a button, switch, velocity sensor, acceleration sensor, inclination sensor, torque sensor, sound sensor, light sensor, magnetic sensor, transceiver wake-up state sensor, transceiver sleep state sensor, gear shift device part rotation sensor, gear shift device part rotation direction sensor, current transmission ratio detection sensor, vehicle wheel rotation speed sensor, vehicle speed sensor, vehicle direction sensor, vibration sensor, electric generator output sensor, wireless brake status sensor, wireless seat post dropper status sensor, wireless electric motor controller status sensor, wireless tire pressure controller status sensor, wireless suspension controller status sensor, or the like.

[0196] The status message can be a message transmitted by the wireless transceiver. The status message can include a status of the wireless 4 transceiver and / or the component 6. The status can e.g. relate to one or more parameters of the wireless gear shift device, such as a wake-up state, a sleep state, a detection of a rotation of one or more parts of the gear shift device, a forward rotation, a rearward rotation, a selected one of the plurality of different selectable transmission ratios, a rotation speed, a vehicle speed, a vehicle direction, an acceleration, a vibration, or the like. The status message can be representative of a numerical value of one or more of the one or more parameters, such as a velocity value, or the like. The predetermined status message can relate to a predetermined one or more of the parameters, and / or a predetermined numerical value of one or more of the one or more parameters. Receipt of a specific status message, e.g. a specific value of the one or more parameters, or a value of the one or more parameters exceeding a threshold, can trigger the wireless device 2 to transmit the pairing request, or the instruction to transmit a pairing request, to the wireless transceiver 4.

[0197] Figure 2 shows an exemplary flow chart of a method 200 for, in a wireless system 1 for a bicycle 1000, pairing a wireless device 2 with a wireless transceiver 4 associated with a component 6. The wireless system 1 can be wireless gear shift system. The wireless device 2 can be a wireless gear control device 2, such as a shifter 1002. The component 6 can be a gear shift device, such as an internally geared hub. The method 200 comprises the following steps. In step 202 the second sensor 14 of the component 6 detects a predetermined second signal. In step 204, in response to the second sensor 14 of the component 6 detecting the predetermined second signal, the wireless transceiver 4 transmits an identification, ID. In step 206, the wireless device 2 receives the ID from the wireless transceiver 6. In step 208, the first sensor 12 of the wireless device 2 detects a predetermined first signal. The predetermined first signal can e.g. be a button press. In step 210A, in response to the first sensor 12 of the wireless device 2 detecting the predetermined first signal, the wireless device 2 transmits a pairing request to the wireless transceiver. Alternatively, in step 210B, in response to the first sensor 12 of the wireless device 2 detecting the predetermined first signal, the wireless device 2 transmits an instruction to transmit a pairing request, to the wireless transceiver. In step 112A the wireless transceiver 4 can transmit a pairing response to the wireless device 2. Alternatively, in step 11 IB the wireless transceiver 4 transmits a pairing request to the wireless device 2, and in step 112B the wireless device 2 can transmit a pairing response to the wireless transceiver 4. Then, the pairing process can be completed.

[0198] The wireless device 2 can store the ID in a memory of the wireless device. The wireless transceiver 4, as part of the pairing process, can store an identification of the wireless device 2 in a memory of the wireless transceiver.

Alternatively, or additionally, the further wireless device can be a further wireless control device, a further wireless component, a wireless sensor, a wireless actuator, or the like. In this method 300 in a first step 302 the first wireless device is paired with the second wireless device. The step 302 may precede the rest of the method by any duration. Pairing the first wireless device with the second wireless device can comprise bringing the first wireless device in a pairing mode, e.g. in response to the first wireless device detecting a predetermined first signal, e.g. by a first sensor of the first wireless device. Pairing the first wireless device with the second wireless device can comprise bringing the second wireless device in pairing mode, e.g. in response to the second wireless device detecting a predetermined second signal, e.g. by a second sensor of the second wireless device. Pairing the first wireless device with the second wireless device can comprise bringing the first wireless device in advertising mode and the second wireless device in scanning mode. The second wireless device may be brought in scanning mode prior to, simultaneous with, or after the first wireless device going to advertising mode. Alternatively, pairing the first wireless device with the second wireless device can comprise bringing the first wireless device in scanning mode and the second wireless device in advertising mode. The second wireless device may be brought in advertising mode prior to, simultaneous with, or after the first wireless device going to scanning mode.

[0200] The first wireless device and the second wireless device can have been paired for a long duration before the execution of the remainder of the method 300. The remainder of the method 300 is aimed at pairing a third wireless device with the second wireless device.

[0201] In step 304, in this example, the first wireless device, in response to the first sensor of the first wireless device detecting a predetermined first signal, transmitting to the second wireless transceiver an instruction to go to pairing mode for pairing with the third wireless device. The first sensor can e.g. detect a button press. The instruction may instruct the second wireless device to go to scanning mode. Alternatively, the instruction may instruct the second wireless device to go to advertising mode. In step 306, the second wireless device pairs with the third wireless device. In the event the instruction instructed the second wireless device to go to scanning mode, step 306 may include bringing the third wireless device in an advertising mode e.g. in response to the third wireless device detecting a predetermined third signal, e.g. by a third sensor of the third wireless device. The third wireless device may be brought in advertising mode prior to, simultaneous with, or after the second wireless device going to scanning mode. In the event the instruction instructed the second wireless device to go to advertising mode, step 306 may include bringing the third wireless device in an scanning mode e.g. in response to the third wireless device detecting a predetermined third signal, e.g. by a third sensor of the third wireless device. The third wireless device may be brought in scanning mode prior to, simultaneous with, or after the second wireless device going to advertising mode. The third sensor can e.g. detect a button press.

[0202] The first wireless device may obtain a unique identifier of the third wireless device and transmit the unique identifier to the second wireless device. Alternatively, the first wireless device may refrain from obtaining the unique identifier of the third wireless device, and / or refrain from transmitting the unique identifier of the third wireless device to the second wireless device.

[0203] The first wireless device may detect a group identifier of the third wireless device, the group identifier identifying a group of wireless devices to which the third wireless device belongs. The group identifier can e.g. identify a brand of devices, a class of devices (e.g. sensors, actuators or communications devices), a type of devices (e.g. velocity sensors, torque sensors, rear derailleurs, front derailleurs, shifters, mobile phones or the like), a series of devices (e.g. derailleurs of series X, derailleurs of series Y). The first wireless device may generate information representative of the group identifier, based on the detected group identifier. Alternatively, or additionally, the first wireless device may have information representative of one or more group identifiers pre-stored in a memory. The first wireless device may be configured to allow a user to select one information representative of one group identifiers from a plurality of informations representative of a plurality of group identifiers pre-stored in the memory. Hence, detection of the group identifier by the first wireless device may be replaced by user selection.

[0204] The first wireless device may transmit the information representative of the group identifier, i.e. the generated and / or selected information representative of the group identifier, to the second wireless device. The information representative of the group identifier can comprise the group identifier itself.

[0205] The second wireless device may have one or more group identifiers pre-stored in a memory. Hence, the information representative of the group identifier may identify one of the group identifiers pre-stored in the second wireless device. It is also possible that the second wireless device need not receive information representative of the group identifier of the third wireless device. In case the second wireless device has one or more group identifiers pre-stored in the memory, the second wireless device can use these for pairing purposes.

[0206] The second wireless device may use the information representative of the group identifier to only accept a pairing response from the third wireless device if a group identifier of the third wireless device corresponds to the information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless external device and / or stored in the memory of the second wireless device.

[0207] Figure 4 shows an exemplary flow chart of a method 400 for, in a wireless system 1 for a bicycle. The wireless system 1 can be wireless gear shift system. In this method 400 in a first step 402 a wireless device is paired with a wireless transceiver associated with a component. The wireless device 2 can be a wireless gear control device 2, such as a shifter 1002. The component 6 can be a gear shift device, such as an internally geared hub. The step 402 may precede the rest of the method by any duration. The wireless device and the wireless transceiver can have been paired for a long duration before the execution of the remainder of the method 400. The remainder of the method 400 is aimed at pairing a further wireless device 16 with the wireless transceiver 4. The further wireless device 16 can be an wireless external device 18, such as a smartphone, smart watch, smart helmet, tablet computer or personal computer. The further wireless device 16 can have a third sensor 20. The third sensor can be similar to the first or second sensor. The third sensor can e.g. be a button or control, e.g. on a touchscreen of the wireless external device 18.

[0208] In step 404, the wireless device 2, in response to a first sensor 12 of the wireless device 2 detecting a predetermined first signal, transmitting to the wireless transceiver 4 an instruction to transmit a pairing request to the further wireless device 16.

[0209] In step 406, the wireless transceiver 4 transmits the pairing request to the further wireless device 16. In step 408, the further wireless device 16 can transmit a pairing response to the wireless transceiver 4. Then, the pairing process, pairing the wireless transceiver 4 with the further wireless device 16 can be completed.

[0210] The wireless device 2 may obtain a unique identifier of the further wireless device 16 and transmit the unique identifier to the wireless transceiver 4. Alternatively, the wireless device may refrain from obtaining the unique identifier of the further wireless device, and / or refrain from transmitting the unique identifier of the further wireless device to the wireless transceiver 4.

[0211] The wireless device 2 may detect a group identifier of the further wireless device, the group identifier identifying a group of wireless devices to which the further wireless device belongs. The wireless device 2 may transmit information representative of the group identifier to the wireless transceiver. The wireless transceiver may use the information representative of the group identifier to only accept a pairing response from the further wireless device if a group identifier of the further wireless device corresponds to the information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless external device.

[0212] Figure 5 shows an exemplary flow chart of a method 500 for, in a wireless system 1 for a bicycle. The wireless system 1 can be a wireless gear shift system. In this method 500 in a first step 502 a wireless device 2 is paired with a wireless transceiver 4 associated with a component 6. The wireless device 2 can be a wireless gear control device 2, such as a shifter 1002 or an electronic rear derailleur. The component 6 can be a gear shift device, such as an internally geared hub. The step 502 may precede the rest of the method by any duration. The wireless device and the wireless transceiver can have been paired for a long duration before the execution of the remainder of the method 500. The remainder of the method 500 is aimed at pairing a further wireless device 16 with the wireless transceiver 4. The further wireless device 16 can e.g. be a wireless external device 18, such as a (mobile) communications device. Pairing of the wireless device 2 and the wireless transceiver 4 can include the wireless transceiver 4 transmitting a pairing request, or the wireless device 2 transmitting a pairing request.

[0213] In step 506, the wireless device 2, in response to a first sensor 12 of the wireless device 2 detecting a predetermined first signal, instructs the wireless transceiver 4 to go into pairing mode. The wireless device 2 may e.g. transmit to the wireless transceiver 4 an instruction to transmit a pairing request to the further wireless device 16. The first sensor 12 can e.g. be one or more of a button, switch, velocity sensor, acceleration sensor, gyroscope, inclination sensor, or the like. Hence, e.g. actuating a button on the wireless device 2 can cause the wireless device 2 to transmit to the wireless transceiver 4 an instruction to transmit the pairing request to the further wireless device 16. Hence, pairing of the wireless transceiver with the further wireless device 16 can be initiated from the wireless device 2.

[0214] In step 508, the method 500 can include instructing the user to bring the further wireless device 16 into pairing mode. The user can e.g. bring the further wireless device 16 into pairing mode by actuating pairing button, e.g. on a touchscreen of the further wireless device 16. The method 500 can e.g. include presenting the instruction to the user in an app. The step 506 may optionally be performed prior to performing the step 504.

[0215] In step 510, the wireless transceiver 4 and the further wireless device 16 are paired. Thereto, the wireless transceiver 4 can transmit the pairing request to the further wireless device 16. The further wireless device 16 can transmit a pairing response to the wireless transceiver 4. Alternatively, in step 510 the further wireless device 16 transmits a pairing request to the wireless transceiver 4, e.g. followed by the wireless transceiver transmitting a pairing response to the further wireless device 16. Then, the pairing process, pairing the wireless transceiver 4 with the further wireless device 16 can be completed. The method may include notifying a successful pairing of the wireless transceiver 4 with the further wireless device 16 to the user, e.g. in the app.

[0216] The wireless device 2 may obtain a unique identifier of the further wireless device 16 and transmit the unique identifier to the wireless transceiver 4. Alternatively, the wireless device 2 may refrain from obtaining the unique identifier of the further wireless device 16, and / or refrain from transmitting the unique identifier of the further wireless device to the wireless transceiver 4. The further wireless device 16 can have a group identifier associated therewith, the group identifier identifying a group of wireless devices to which the wireless device belongs. The wireless device 2 may detect the group identifier of the further wireless device 16.

[0217] Optionally, e.g. in a step 504, the user may be prompted to select a group identifier, e.g. from a list of group identifiers, such as in the app. Prompting the user to select a group identifier may precede the step of detecting a group identifier of the wireless device 2.

[0218] The wireless device 2 may transmit information representative of the group identifier to the wireless transceiver 4. The wireless device 2 may transmit the group identifier to the wireless transceiver 4. The wireless transceiver may have one or more group identifiers pre-stored in a memory. The information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless device 2 may refer to one of the one or more group identifiers stored in the memory. The wireless transceiver may use the group identifier, or the information representative of the group identifier, to scan for wireless devices in pairing mode and having a group identifier corresponding to the information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless device 2. In case more than one wireless devices in pairing mode and having a group identifier corresponding to the information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless device 2 is detected, the wireless transceiver 4 may notify the user thereof, e.g. via the app. The wireless transceiver 4 may use the information representative of the group identifier to only accept a pairing response from the further wireless device 16 if a group identifier of the further wireless device 16 corresponds to the information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless device 2.

[0219] Figure 6 shows an exemplary flow chart of a method 600 for, in a wireless system 1 for a bicycle. The wireless system 1 can be wireless gear shift system. In this method 600 in a first step 602 an wireless external device 18 is paired with a wireless transceiver associated with a component. The wireless external device 18 can e.g. be a (mobile) communications device, such as a smartphone, smart watch, smart helmet, tablet computer or personal computer.. The component 6 can be a gear shift device, such as an internally geared hub. The step 602 may precede the rest of the method by any duration. The wireless external device and the wireless transceiver can have been paired for a long duration before the execution of the remainder of the method 600. The remainder of the method 600 is aimed at pairing a wireless device 2 with the wireless transceiver 4. The wireless device 2 can be a wireless gear control device 2, such as a shifter 1002. Pairing of the wireless external device 18 and the wireless transceiver 4 can include the wireless transceiver 4 transmitting a pairing request, or the wireless external device 18 transmitting a pairing request.

[0220] In step 606, the wireless external device 18, in response to a third sensor 20 of the wireless external device 18 detecting a predetermined third signal, instructs the wireless transceiver 4 to go into pairing mode. The wireless external device 18 may e.g. transmit to the wireless transceiver 4 an instruction to transmit a pairing request to the wireless device 2. The third sensor 20 can e.g. be one or more of a button, switch, velocity sensor, acceleration sensor, gyroscope, inclination sensor, or the like. Hence, e.g. actuating a button on a (touch)screen of the wireless external device 18, such as in an app, can cause the wireless external device 18 to transmit to the wireless transceiver 4 an instruction to transmit the pairing request to the wireless device 2. Hence, pairing of the wireless transceiver with the wireless device 2 can be initiated from the wireless external device 18. In step 608, the method 600 can include instructing the user to bring the wireless device 2 into pairing mode. The user can e.g. bring the wireless device 2 into pairing mode by actuating pairing button of the wireless device 2. The method 600 can e.g. include presenting the instruction to the user in the app. The step 606 may optionally be performed prior to performing the step 604.

[0221] In step 610, the wireless transceiver 4 and the wireless device 2 are paired. Thereto, the wireless transceiver 4 can transmit the pairing request to the wireless device 2. The wireless device 2 can transmit a pairing response to the wireless transceiver 4. Alternatively, in step 610 the wireless device 2 transmits a pairing request to the wireless transceiver 4, e.g. followed by the wireless transceiver transmitting a pairing response to the wireless device 2. Then, the pairing process, pairing the wireless transceiver 4 with the wireless device 2 can be completed. The method may include notifying a successful pairing of the wireless transceiver 4 with the wireless device 2 to the user, e.g. via the wireless external device 18, e.g. in the app.

[0222] The wireless external device 18 may obtain a unique identifier of the wireless device 2 and transmit the unique identifier to the wireless transceiver 4. Alternatively, the wireless external device 18 may refrain from obtaining the unique identifier of the wireless device 2, and / or refrain from transmitting the unique identifier of the wireless device to the wireless transceiver 4.

[0223] The wireless external device 18 may detect a group identifier of the wireless device 2, the group identifier identifying a group of wireless devices to which the wireless device belongs. Optionally, e.g. in a step 604, the user may be prompted to select a group identifier, e.g. from a list of group identifiers, such as in the app. Prompting the user to select a group identifier may precede the step of detecting a group identifier of the wireless device 2.

[0224] The wireless external device 18 may transmit information representative of the group identifier to the wireless transceiver 4. The external wireless device 18 may transmit the group identifier to the wireless transceiver 4. The wireless transceiver may have one or more group identifiers pre-stored in a memory. The information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless external device 18 may refer to one of the one or more group identifiers stored in the memory. The wireless transceiver may use the group identifier, or the information representative of the group identifier to scan for wireless devices in pairing mode and having a group identifier corresponding to the information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless external device 18. In case more than one wireless devices in pairing mode and having a group identifier corresponding to the information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless external device 18 is detected, the wireless transceiver 4 may notify the user thereof, e.g. via the wireless external device 18. The wireless transceiver 4 may use the information representative of the group identifier to only accept a pairing response from the wireless device 2 if a group identifier of the wireless device 2 corresponds to the information representative of the group identifier received from the wireless external device 18.

[0225] Figure 7 shows an exemplary flow chart of a method 700 for, in a wireless system 1 for a bicycle 1000 (see figure 3), pairing a wireless gear control device 2 with a wireless transceiver 4 associated with a wireless gear shift system. The wireless gear control device 2 can be a shifter 1024, e.g. mounted to a handlebar 1003. Alternatively, or additionally, the wireless gear control device can e.g. be integrated with an electric derailleur, such as an electric rear derailleur 1031. In this example, a thru axle 6 is configured to receive shift commands from a gear control device and to control an actuator 8 of a transmission 10 comprising a plurality of selectable transmission ratios. The wireless transceiver 4 is in this example mounted in or on the thru axle 6. Hence, the thru axle 6, and thereby the transmission 10, can be controlled wirelessly. In this example, transmission 10 is part of a wireless gear change device, such as a wirelessly actuatable internally geared hub transmission 1022.

[0226] For the wireless gear control device 2 to be able to wirelessly control the thru axle 6, it can be required that the wireless gear control device 2 and the wireless transceiver 4 are paired.

[0227] In this method 700 in a first step 702 an external wireless communications device 18 is paired with the wireless transceiver 4. The external wireless communications device 18 can e.g. be a (mobile) communications device, such as a smartphone, smart watch, smart helmet, tablet computer or personal computer. The external wireless communications device and the wireless transceiver can have been paired for a long duration before the execution of the remainder of the method 700. The remainder of the method 700 is aimed at pairing the wireless gear control device 2 with the wireless transceiver 4. Pairing of the external wireless communications device 18 and the wireless transceiver 4 can include the wireless transceiver 4 transmitting a pairing request, or the external wireless communications device 18 transmitting a pairing request.

[0228] The wireless gear control device has group identifier associated therewith. The group identifier may identify e.g. a brand of wireless gear control devices and / or a type of wireless gear control devices. The group identifier is not a unique identifier. Hence, multiple gear control devices forming a group will have the same group identifier.

[0229] The external wireless communications device 18 may present one or more groups of wireless gear control devices to the user, e.g. in a user interface of the app. Each group may correspond to a different group identifier.

[0230] In step 704, the user may be prompted to select a group, e.g. from a list of groups, such as in the app. The external wireless communications device 18 may transmit information representative of the selected group, which corresponds to information representative of a specific group identifier to the wireless transceiver 4. The wireless transceiver 4 may have one or more group identifiers pre-stored in a memory. Upon receiving the information representative of the group identifier from the external wireless communications device 18, the wireless transceiver 4 may retrieve the corresponding group identifier from memory. Alternatively, or additionally, the external wireless communications device 18 may transmit the selected group identifier to the wireless transceiver 4. It is possible that the external wireless communications device detects the group identifier from the wireless gear control device to be paired. The external wireless communications device may transmit the detected group identifier, or information representative of the detected group identifier, to the wireless transceiver 4.

[0231] In step 706, the external wireless communications device 18, in response to a third sensor 20 of the external wireless communications device 18 detecting a predetermined third signal, instructs the wireless transceiver 4 to go into pairing mode. The external wireless communications device 18 may e.g. transmit to the wireless transceiver 4 an instruction to transmit a pairing request to the wireless device 2. The third sensor 20 can e.g. be one or more of a button, switch, velocity sensor, acceleration sensor, gyroscope, inclination sensor, or the like. Hence, e.g. actuating a button on a (touch)screen of the external wireless communications device 18, such as in an app, can cause the external wireless communications device 18 to transmit to the wireless transceiver 4 an instruction to go to pairing mode. Hence, pairing of the wireless transceiver with the wireless gear control device 2 can be initiated from the external wireless communications device 18.

[0232] In step 708, the method 700 can include instructing the user to bring the wireless gear control device 2 into pairing mode. The user can e.g. bring the wireless gear control device 2 into pairing mode by actuating pairing button of the wireless gear control device 2. The method 700 can e.g. include presenting the instruction to the user in the app. The step 706 may optionally be performed prior to performing the step 704.

[0233] In step 710, the wireless transceiver 4 and the wireless gear control device 2 are paired. Thereto, the wireless transceiver 4 can transmit the pairing request to the wireless gear control device 2. The wireless gear control device 2 can transmit a pairing response to the wireless transceiver 4. Then, the pairing process, pairing the wireless transceiver 4 with the wireless ger control device 2 can be completed. The method may include notifying a successful pairing of the wireless transceiver 4 with the wireless gear control device 2 to the user, e.g. via the external wireless communications device 18, e.g. in the app.

[0234] The wireless transceiver 4 may use the received or retrieved group identifier, or the information representative of the group identifier, to scan for wireless devices in pairing mode and having a group identifier corresponding to the information representative of the group identifier received from the external wireless communications device 18. In case more than one wireless devices in pairing mode and having a group identifier corresponding to the information representative of the group identifier received from the external wireless communications device 18 is detected, the wireless transceiver 4 may notify the user thereof, e.g. via the external wireless communications device 18. The wireless transceiver 4 may use the received or retrieved group identifier, or the information representative of the group identifier, to only accept a pairing response from the wireless gear control device 2 if a group identifier of the wireless gear control device 2 corresponds to the information representative of the group identifier received from the external wireless communications device 18.

[0235] Figure 8 shows an exemplary flow chart of a method 800 for, in a wireless system 1 for a bicycle. The wireless system 1 can be wireless gear shift system. The method can be arranged for controlling a component 6 having a wireless transceiver 4. In this example, the component 6 and the wireless transceiver 4 are part of a wireless gear change device, such as a wirelessly actuatable internally geared hub transmission 1008.

[0236] At step 802 the wireless transceiver 4 broadcasts an identification, ID, of the wireless transceiver and / or the component.

[0237] In step 804 a wireless device 2 listens for devices broadcasting an ID. Here, the wireless device 2 is a wireless gear control device 2. The wireless gear control device 2 can be a shifter 1002, e.g. mounted to a handlebar 1004.

[0238] At step 806 the wireless device 2 receives the ID broadcast by the wireless transceiver 4, and stores the received ID in a memory of the wireless device 2.

[0239] At step 808, the wireless device, for controlling the component 6, broadcasts a control signal encoded with information representative of the received ID. At step 810 the wireless transceiver 4 receives a control signal broadcast by the wireless device 2.

[0240] At step 812 the wireless transceiver controls the component 6 according to the control signal if the information representative of the received ID in the control signal corresponds to the ID of the wireless transceiver 4.

[0241] The wireless transceiver 4 may broadcasts the ID in response to a second sensor of the component detecting a predetermined second signal. For instance, the predetermined second signal can relate to a movement direction and / or movement velocity and / or movement duration of the bicycle. Alternatively, or additionally, the predetermined second signal can relate to a button of the wireless transceiver and / or component being pressed.

[0242] In step 804, the wireless device 2 may start listening for devices broadcasting the ID in response to a first sensor of the wireless device detecting a predetermined first signal. The predetermined first signal can relate to a button of the wireless device 2 being pressed.

[0243] Figure 9 shows an exemplary flow chart of a method 900 for, in a wireless system 1 for a bicycle. The wireless system 1 can be wireless gear shift system. The method 900 is aimed at pairing a wireless device 2 with a wireless transceiver 4 associated with a component 6. The wireless device 2 can be a wireless gear control device 2, such as a shifter 1002. The component 6 can be a gear shift device, such as an internally geared hub.

[0244] At step 902 the wireless device 2 transmits a pairing request to the wireless transceiver 4.

[0245] At step 904 the wireless transceiver 4 pairs with the wireless device 2, such that the wireless device 2 is the central and the wireless transceiver 4 is the peripheral. In step 904, the wireless transceiver may store an ID of the wireless device 4 or / or the component 6 in a memory of the wireless transceiver 2.

[0246] At step 906 the wireless transceiver 4 and the wireless device 2 are unpaired. The unpairing may be performed automatically. The unpairing may performed in response to a first sensor associated with the wireless device 2 detecting a predetermined first signal, and / or in response to a second sensor associated with the wireless transceiver 4 and / or the component 6 detecting a predetermined second signal.

[0247] At step 908, the wireless transceiver 4 transmits a pairing request to the wireless device 2. At step 910, the wireless device 2 pairs with the wireless transceiver 4, such that the wireless transceiver 4 is the central and the wireless device 2 is the peripheral. Thereto, the wireless transceiver can transmit a pairing request to the wireless device 2.
