Description

[0001] “Protective packaging”

[0002] DESCRIPTION

[0003] The present invention refers to a protective packaging. The present invention preferably refers to a protective packaging suitable for protecting an article during shipping or transportation, thereof.

[0004] Protective packagings are often used to protect the articles contained therein from collisions and impacts during shipping or transportation. When relatively fragile or precious articles are to be transported or shipped, it is often provided that the article is contained inside the packaging in a cushioned manner to protect it from a physical impact that might be caused by collisions suffered by the packaging during shipping or transportation.

[0005] In most cases, an additional structure placed between the article and the outer walls of the packaging is used to house the article inside the packaging in a cushioned manner. Such additional structures include, for example, crumpled paper, air-filled plastic cushions, moulded foam, or accordion-folded pieces of cardboard.

[0006] The Applicant thinks that the packagings, including protective packagings, should seek to increase, or at least not decrease, the perceived value of the articles contained therein.

[0007] Without wishing to prove any theory, in the Applicant's experience the perceived value can be seen as an overall evaluation of the usefulness of an article, based on the perception of the relationship between price and quality.

[0008] In the Applicant's experience, the unboxing experience (i.e. the action of removing an article from the packaging for the first time) also contributes to the perception of the relationship between price and quality. In particular, a fulfilling unboxing experience (consciously or unconsciously) can increase the perceived steam of an article, while a disappointing unboxing experience can decrease the perceived value of an article.

[0009] In the Applicant's experience, a fulfilling unboxing experience should provide for ease of access to the article and avoid possible damage to the article during removal thereof from the packaging. The Applicant has in fact noted that having to remove the various additional structures from the protective packaging and having to stack them or in any case temporarily store them in order to be able to access the article, as well as having to take special care not to damage the article while the additional structures are being removed, may result in an unfulfilling unboxing experience and therefore decrease the perceived value of the article itself.

[0010] Moreover, a packaging that presents itself with attention to detail even when opened, can make the unboxing experience fulfilling.

[0011] In fact, in the Applicant's experience, an unboxing experience in which the packaging does not have appendages, flaps, visible interlocks, visible joints and the like, can generate a feeling of care and attention in the packaging that can make the unboxing experience rewarding.

[0012] On the contrary, the Applicant thinks that an unboxing experience during which the packaging appears neglected in its detail by exposing appendages, flaps, interlocks, joints to view might give rise to a feeling of inadequacy of the packaging that could negatively impact the unboxing experience.

[0013] Furthermore, the Applicant thinks that the protection of the environment must be taken into extreme consideration also in relation to the manufacture of packagings, including the protective packagings.

[0014] The Applicant is of the opinion that the protective packaging has to be not only as recyclable as possible but should also be designed in such a way that it can be effectively recycled, especially for the protection of the environment and also because this can further increase the perceived value of the article. In this sense, the Applicant considers that an end user must be able to easily and quickly dispose of the protective packaging by separate collection (which constitutes the first step for an effective recycling process).

[0015] The Applicant has perceived that if anchoring structures, interlocks or the like were concealed from view by superimposing on these anchoring structures, interlocks preferably continuous walls that also have a function of containing the article and cushioning it during transport, the protective packaging would be able to adequately protect the article during transport and would appear neat during the unboxing experience. The Applicant has also perceived that by manufacturing such a protective packaging entirely of paper material, the end user would not be obliged to disassemble all the parts of the packaging in order to be able to dispose of it by separate collection, making it possible to effectively recycle the protective packaging.

[0016] The Applicant has found that by using paper material to make a protective packaging which provides for a box that incorporates in two first opposite side structures cushioning structures consisting simply of walls extending between two second opposite side walls of the box and anchoring to the base wall of the box, and which also envisages a structure inserted internally to the box having further walls which create cushioning structures also for the second opposite side walls of the box and which has a back wall concealing from view the anchoring structures of the cushioning structures of the first two side walls of the box, it is possible to obtain a recyclable protective packaging that appears taken care of in the details even when opened to remove the transported article.

[0017] The present invention therefore concerns a protective packaging made of paper material.

[0018] Preferably, the protective packaging comprises a containment box and an inner structure.

[0019] Preferably, the containment box comprises a base wall, a back wall, a front wall, a first side structure and a second side structure.

[0020] Preferably, said first side structure and said second side structure respectively comprise an outer wall, an inner wall parallel to and spaced from said outer wall and extending from said front wall to said back wall.

[0021] Preferably, said first side structure and said second side structure respectively comprise an upper wall which connects and spaces out from each other said inner wall and said outer wall.

[0022] Preferably, said first side structure and said second side structure respectively comprise a lower wall connected to said inner wall on the opposite side with respect to said upper wall, parallel to said base wall and overlapping said base wall. Preferably, the inner structure comprises a first outer side wall and a first inner side wall parallel to said first outer side wall, wherein said first outer side wall is in contact with said back wall and wherein said first inner side wall extends from said inner wall of the first.

[0023] Preferably, the inner structure comprises a second outer side wall and a second inner side wall parallel to said second outer side wall, wherein said second outer side wall is in contact with said front wall and wherein said second inner side wall extends from said inner wall of the first side structure to said inner wall of said second side structure.

[0024] Preferably, the inner structure comprises a rest wall connected to said first inner side wall and to said second inner side wall and extending from said inner wall of the first side structure to said inner wall of said second side structure and overlapping said lower wall of the first side structure and said lower wall of the second side structure.

[0025] Preferably, said rest wall, said first inner side wall, said second inner side wall, said inner wall of the first side structure and said inner wall of said second side structure define a housing volume for an article.

[0026] The Applicant has verified that in this way the protective packaging has three walls substantially at each perimeter side and two substantially overlapping walls at the back.

[0027] The Applicant believes that this is able to adequately protect the article contained in the packaging volume from any collisions.

[0028] The Applicant has also verified that the inner structure and in particular the first inner side wall, the second inner side wall and the rest wall cover the lower walls of the first side structure and of the second side structure of the containment box from view, defining a housing volume free of unsightly tabs, appendages, flaps, interlocks or joints.

[0029] The expression “paper material” means a material based on paper or paper pulp in the form of single sheets or panels or sheets or panels overlapping on each other or interspersed with one or more corrugated sheets in which the ratio of weight to surface area (grammage) is between about 100 grams per square metre and about 650 grams per square metre. The expression “integral” when referred to two walls means that the two walls are made in one piece, that is, the two walls are made from a single continuous piece and without interruptions or cuts of paper material.

[0030] The expression “height” means a measurement along a direction perpendicular to the base wall of the containment box.

[0031] The expression “width” means a measurement along a direction parallel to the base wall of the containment box and perpendicular to the outer wall of the first side structure of the containment box.

[0032] The expression “length” means a measurement along a direction parallel to the base wall of the containment box and parallel to the outer wall of the first side structure of the containment box.

[0033] The expression “connected” when referred to two or more parts of the protective packaging, means that these two or more parts are joined together in a stable and permanent manner.

[0034] The expression “extends from a (first) wall to a (second) wall” when referred to a wall of the protective packaging, means that said wall at its own first end reaches and preferably comes into contact with the (first) wall and, at its own second end, reaches and preferably comes into contact with the (second) wall.

[0035] The expression “wave direction” means the direction followed by the ridges and by the depressions of the insert of corrugated paper inserted between a first and a second flat sheet in a so-called corrugated cardboard. Such ridges are usually glued to the first flat sheet of corrugated cardboard and such depressions are usually glued to the second flat sheet of corrugated cardboard.

[0036] The present invention may have at least one of the preferred features described below. These characteristics can therefore be present individually or in combination with each other, unless expressly stated otherwise, in the protective packaging of the present invention.

[0037] Preferably, the containment box comprises a lid wall integral with said back wall and foldable in closure of said housing volume and to open said housing volume.

[0038] Preferably, said outer wall, said inner wall and said upper wall of said first side structure are integral with one other. Preferably, said outer wall, said inner wall and said upper wall of said second side structure are integral with one other.

[0039] In this way, the portion of the first side structure and of the second side structure that remain in view when accessing the housing volume have no junction areas or panel overlap.

[0040] Preferably, the distance between the inner wall and the outer wall of the first side structure is at least 0.3 centimetres.

[0041] Preferably, the distance between the inner wall and the outer wall of the second side structure is at least 0.3 centimetres.

[0042] The Applicant considers that this distance is the minimum distance to allow an optimization of the cushioning effect in the event of collision of the containment box.

[0043] Preferably, the distance between the inner wall and the outer wall of the first side structure is equal to the distance between the inner wall and the outer wall of the second side structure.

[0044] Preferably, said lower wall of said first side structure is connected to said base wall.

[0045] Preferably, said lower wall of said second side structure is connected to said base wall.

[0051] Preferably, the height of the inner wall of the second side structure is equal to the height of the outer wall of the second side structure.

[0052] In this way, the upper wall of the second side structure lies parallel to the base wall of the containment box, also acting as an abutment wall for the lid wall when closing said housing volume.

[0053] Preferably, the height of the inner wall of the first side structure is equal to the height of the inner wall of the second side structure.

[0054] Preferably, said backwall, front wall, first side structure and second side structure are integral with said base wall.

[0055] Preferably, the containment box comprises a first back connecting wall integral with the back wall.

[0056] Preferably, the first back connecting wall is parallel to and connected to the outer wall of the first side structure.

[0057] Preferably, the first connecting wall faces said containment volume.

[0058] The Applicant considers that the first back connecting wall increases the rigidity of the containment box.

[0059] Preferably, said first back connecting wall is interposed between said outer wall and said inner wall of said first side structure.

[0060] By arranging the first back connecting wall (which is configured as a panel overlapping a wall) interposed between said outer wall and said inner wall of said first side structure, the first back connecting wall is hidden from view when the lid wall is opening the containment volume.

[0061] Preferably, the containment box comprises a second back connecting wall integral with the back wall.

[0062] Preferably, the second back connecting wall is parallel to and connected to the outer wall of the second side structure. Preferably, the second back connecting wall faces said containment volume.

[0063] The Applicant considers that the second back connecting wall increases the rigidity of the containment box.

[0064] Preferably, said second back connecting wall is interposed between said outer wall and said inner wall of said second side structure.

[0065] By arranging the second back connecting wall (which is configured as a panel overlapping a wall) interposed between said outer wall and said inner wall of said second side structure, the second back connecting wall is hidden from view when the lid wall is opening the containment volume.

[0070] Preferably, said first front connecting wall is interposed between said outer wall and said inner wall of said first side structure.

[0071] By arranging the first connecting front wall (which is configured as a panel overlapping a wall) interposed between said outer wall and said inner wall of said second side structure, the first connecting front wall is hidden from view when the lid wall is opening the containment volume.

[0072] Preferably, the containment box comprises a second connecting front wall integral with the front wall.

[0073] Preferably, the second connecting front wall is parallel to and connected to the outer wall of the second side structure.

[0074] Preferably, the second connecting front wall faces said containment volume.

[0075] The Applicant considers that the second connecting front wall increases the rigidity of the containment box.

[0076] Preferably, said second front connecting wall is interposed between said outer wall and said inner wall of said second side structure.

[0077] By arranging the second connecting front wall (which is configured as a panel overlapping a wall) interposed between said outer wall and said inner wall of said second side structure, the second connecting front wall is hidden from view when the lid wall is opening the containment volume.

[0078] Preferably, the first connecting front wall is coplanar with the first back connecting wall.

[0079] Preferably, the second connecting front wall is coplanar with the second back connecting wall.

[0080] Preferably, the containment box comprises a seal wall integral with the lid wall.

[0081] Preferably, said seal wall is parallel to the front wall and is configured to abut against the front wall when the lid wall is folded in closure of said containment volume.

[0082] Preferably, the seal wall has a height lower than the front wall.

[0083] Preferably, the seal wall is glued to the front wall before the first opening of the box.

[0084] Preferably, the seal wall comprises a tear tab extending along the entire width of the seal wall.

[0085] Preferably, the containment box is made from a single blank.

[0086] Preferably, the first outer side wall of the inner structure is parallel to the back wall and perpendicular to the base wall of the containment box.

[0087] Preferably, the first outer side wall of the inner structure is made of corrugated cardboard and has a wave direction perpendicular to the base wall of the containment box.

[0088] In this way, the compressive strength and thus the load-bearing capacity of the first side wall of the inner structure is maximized. Preferably, the second outer side wall of the inner structure is parallel to the front wall of and perpendicular to the base wall of the containment box.

[0089] Preferably, the second outer side wall of the inner structure is made of corrugated cardboard and has a wave direction perpendicular to the base wall of the containment box.

[0090] In this way, the compressive strength and thus the load-bearing capacity of the second side wall of the inner structure is maximized.

[0091] Preferably, the height of the first outer side wall and of the second outer side wall of the inner structure is greater than the height of the first inner side wall and of the second inner side wall of the inner structure.

[0092] In this way, the rest wall is spaced from the base wall of the containment box, creating a base cavity between the base wall of the containment box and the rest wall.

[0093] The Applicant considers that this base cavity increases the cushioning effect of the rest wall by further improving the ability to safely transport and house the article contained in the housing volume.

[0094] The Applicant also considers that this base cavity can be used as an auxiliary housing volume.

[0095] Preferably, the first outer side wall and the second outer side wall of the inner structure are not connected to the back wall and to the front wall of the containment box.

[0096] Preferably, the first outer side wall and the second outer side wall of the inner structure are resting against the back wall and the front wall of the containment box.

[0097] In this way, the inner structure is removable from the containment box making the auxiliary housing volume accessible.

[0098] In a first embodiment variant, said inner structure preferably comprises a first spacer wall parallel to said base wall and connected to said first outer side wall and to said first inner side wall. Preferably, said first spacer wall is interposed between said first outer side wall and said first inner side wall, spacing out from each other said first outer side wall and said first inner side wall.

[0099] Preferably, said first spacer wall extends from said inner wall of the first side structure to said inner wall of said second side structure.

[0100] The first spacer wall allows to create a gap between the first outer side wall and the first inner side wall, increases the cushioning effect at the back wall of the containment box and further improves the ability to safely transport and house the article contained in the housing volume.

[0101] Preferably, the distance between the first inner side wall and the first outer side wall of the inner structure is at least 0.3 centimetres.

[0102] The Applicant considers that this distance is the minimum distance to allow an optimization of the cushioning effect in the event of collision of the containment box.

[0103] Preferably, the first spacer wall is integral with the first inner side wall and the first outer side wall.

[0104] In this way, the first spacer wall (which remains in view when accessing the housing volume) has no junction areas or panel overlap with the first inner side wall and the first outer side wall.

[0105] In accordance with the first embodiment variant, said inner structure preferably comprises a second spacer wall parallel to said base wall and connected to said second outer side wall and to said second inner side wall.

[0106] Preferably, said second spacer wall is interposed between said second outer side wall and said second inner side wall, spacing out from each other said second outer side wall and said second inner side wall.

[0107] Preferably, said second spacer wall extends from said inner wall of the first side structure to said inner wall of said second side structure.

[0108] The second spacer wall allows to create a gap between the second outer side wall and the second inner side wall, increases the cushioning effect at the front wall of the containment box and further improving the ability to safely transport and house the article contained in the housing volume.

[0109] Preferably, the distance between the second inner side wall and the second outer side wall of the inner structure is at least 0.3 centimetres.

[0110] The Applicant considers that this distance is the minimum distance to allow an optimization of the cushioning effect in the event of collision of the containment box.

[0111] Preferably, the second spacer wall is integral with the second inner side wall and the second outer side wall.

[0112] In this way, the second spacer wall (which remains in view when accessing the housing volume) have no junction areas or panel overlap with the second inner side wall and the second outer side wall.

[0113] Preferably, the first spacer wall, the first outer side wall, the first inner side wall, the rest wall, the second spacer wall, the second outer side wall and the second inner side wall are made from a single blank.

[0114] In a second embodiment variant, said first outer side wall is in contact with said first inner side wall.

[0115] Preferably, said first outer side wall is integral with said first inner side wall.

[0116] In this way, at the back wall of the containment box there are three walls parallel to and overlapping each other.

[0117] In accordance with the second embodiment variant, said second outer side wall is in contact with said second inner side wall.

[0118] Preferably, said second outer side wall is integral with said second inner side wall.

[0119] In this way, at the front wall of the containment box there are three walls parallel to and overlapping each other.

[0120] Preferably, the first outer side wall, the first inner side wall, the rest wall, the second outer side wall and the second inner side wall are made from a single blank. Preferably, said inner structure is made of a flat rectangular-shaped blank.

The outer wall 20 of the first side structure 16 and the outer wall 21 of the second side structure 17 are perpendicular to the back wall 18 and to the front wall 19.

[0137] The height of the outer wall 20 of the first side structure 16 is equal to the height of the outer wall 21 of the second side structure 17, the height of the front wall 19 and the height of the back wall 18.

[0138] The containment box 11 further comprises a lid wall 22 which develops from the back wall 18. The lid wall 22 has the function of closing the containment box 11 . The width of the lid wall 22 is equal to the width of the base wall 15. The length of the lid wall 22 is equal to the length of the base wall 15. The back wall 18 is integral with the lid wall 22 and forms a hinge with the lid wall 22.

[0139] As depicted in Figure 5, where parts of the first side structure 16 and of the second side structure 17 (which will be described below) have been omitted, the containment box 11 comprises a first back connecting wall 23. The first back connecting wall 23 is integral only with the back wall 18. The first back connecting wall 23 is arranged parallel to the outer wall 20 of the first side structure 16. The outer wall 20 of the first side structure 16 overlaps the first back connecting wall 23, such that the first back connecting wall 23 faces the inside of the containment box 11 . The height of the first back connecting wall 23 is substantially equal to the height of the outer wall 20 of the first side structure 16.
