Description

[0001] ARTICLE CARRIER AND BLANK THEREFOR

[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD

[0003] The present invention relates to article carriers and to blanks for forming the same. More specifically, but not exclusively, the invention relates to a carrier of the top-gripping type having an engaging panel including one or more apertures for receiving and retaining an article therein and a top panel affixed thereto.

[0004] BACKGROUND

[0005] In the field of packaging, it is known to provide cartons for carrying multiple articles. Cartons are well known in the art and are useful for enabling consumers to transport, store and access a group of articles for consumption. For cost and environmental considerations, such cartons or carriers need to be formed from as little material as possible and cause as little wastage in the materials from which they are formed as possible. Further considerations are the strength of the carton and its suitability for holding and transporting large weights of articles. It is desirable that the contents of the carton are secure within the carton.

[0006] It is well known to provide top gripping article carriers in which an aperture is formed in a panel of the carrier, wherein tabs are struck from said aperture. The tabs are displaced out of the plane of said panel when an article is received in the aperture, wherein said tabs engage the article generally about a flange or lip of the article.

[0125] The second locking tabs 84 are then folded inwardly of the carrier 90, a distal portion or head 88 of the second locking tabs 84 passes through the first beam panel 18B (the first locking tabs 80 when present are folded downwardly as consequence). The head 88 of the second locking tabs 84 passes through the opening of the third locking elements RC in the main panel 12, the receiving tabs 70 are displaced downwardly, outwardly of the interior of the carrier 90. The shoulders of the head 88 engage with a lower or outer surface of the main panel 12 to prevent or at least inhibit withdrawal of the second locking tabs 84 from the receiving opening. The first locking tabs 80 when provided also pass though the main panel 12. The second locking tabs 84 are received in respective openings in the first beam panel 18B and a located in the wider portion at an end thereof the waist or restriction prevents or at least inhibits withdrawal of the second locking tabs 84.

[0126] The receiving tabs 70 and the first locking tabs 80 (when present) may interact with the second locking tabs 84, a free end edge of one or both of the receiving tab 70 and the first locking tab 80 may engage or contact a second locking tab 84 so as to prevent or inhibit its unfolding.

[0127] The openings created in the composite top panel 18 / 20 by deployment or activation of the pair of panel securing devices may form a carrying handle for transportation of the package.

[0128] Advantageously, the carrier 90 may be assembled or constructed without use of glue or adhesive to secure the panels 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 in an erected condition.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 3, the locking tab receiving opening and / or the first locking tab 180 are generally greater in width than the second beam panel 118C. The locking tab receiving opening and / or the first locking tab 180, or at least portions thereof, interrupt the hinged connections between the second beam panel 118C and each of the first and third beam panels 118B, 118D. The locking tab receiving opening and / or the first locking tab 180 comprises a pair of opposed arcuate cutline sections extending into a respective one of the third beam panel 118D and first beam panel 118B. The third locking elements RC take the form of an opening in the main panel 112, the opening may be defined by a respective receiving tab 170 struck from the main panel 112 and hingedly connected thereto. The opening in the main panel 112 and / or receiving tab 170 is shaped similarly to the locking tab receiving opening and / or the first locking tab 180. The receiving tabs 170 are hingedly connected to the main panel 112 by a hinged connection in the form of a fold line 171.

[0151] The hinged connection, fold line 117, between the first side panel 114 and the first top panel 118 may be interrupted by a cut line CT, cut line CT may be substantially “U” shaped so as to define a tab Ts struck from the first top panel 118. The tab Ts is integral with the first side panel 114 and extends therefrom. The blank 110 may comprise a pair of cut lines CT each defining a tab Ts. A first tab Ts may be disposed proximate a first end of the fold line 117 a second tab Ts may be disposed proximate a second, opposing, end of the fold line 117. The tabs Ts may form an abutment against which an edge of the second top panel 120 engages to align the second top panel 120 and / or prevent or inhibit relative movement of the second top panel 120 with respect to the first top panel 118.

[0152] In some embodiments, a tab may hingedly connected to the second top panel 120, the tab may be inserted into a slot or opening in the first top panel 118 defined in part by the cutline CT and created when the first top panel 118 is folded with respect to the first side panel 114.

[0153] The blank 110 may comprise a pair of second locking tabs 150, the pair of second locking tabs 150 are spaced apart, longitudinally, by a handle aperture A7. Each of the pair of second locking tabs 150 is struck from, or defined in, the second top panel 120 and is hingedly connected thereto by a hinged connection in the form of a fold line 151 . A first one of the pair of foldable tabs 150 is hinged in opposition to the second one of the pair of foldable tabs 150; the hinged connections, fold lines 151 , defining opposed ends of a handle opening.

[0154] The second locking tabs 150 are configured for securing the second top panel 120 to the engaging panel 112 and / or the second beam panel 118C. The second locking tabs 150 comprise a pair of cuts 153. The pair of cuts 153 extend inwardly of the tabs 150 from opposed side edges thereof. Each of the pair of cuts may be non-linear or curvilinear in shape. The cuts 153 define barbs or shoulders of the locking tab 150 for engaging with portions the engaging panel 112 and / or the second beam panel 118C surrounding openings therein. A fold line 155 may extend from an inner end of each cut 153 towards the side edge of the tab 150 from which that cut 153 extends. In this way a pair of opposed wing portions 1541s defined in each second locking tab 150. The fold lines 155 may be arranged to facilitate folding of the wing portions 154 into face-to-face relationship with one of the inclined beam panels 118B, 118D, first and third beam panels 118B, 118D best shown in Figure 5. The second locking tabs 150 and handle aperture A7 create a handle opening exposing to view openings in the engaging panel 112 and / or making those openings more accessible for a user to engage with. In this way the user can grasp the engaging panel 112 to carry the carrier 190.

[0155] Optionally, the first top panel 118 may be secured to the second top panel 120 by glue G or other adhesive treatment, as illustrated in Figure 4. Referring to Figure 3, each of the opposed end edges of each beam panel 118B, 118D is inset from the adjacent end edge of the inner top panel / second engaging panel 118. Such an inset arrangement of each end edge of the beam panels 118B, 118D allows the associated end closure flap 122A, 122B to take a folded position, as shown in Figure 4, where the upper or distal end of the associated end flap 122A, 122B is disposed under the inner top panel 118. In such a position under the inner top panel 118, the associated end closure flap 122A.122B may provide a brace for supporting the inner top panel 118 against external downward vertical force. The bracing effect of the end closure flap 122A, 122B is particularly appreciated while the outer top panel 120 is glued to the inner top panel 118.

[0156] Referring to Figure 7, there is shown a blank 210 comprising a plurality of panels 212, 214, 216, 218, 220, including a main panel 212 for forming a lower wall or engaging panel of a carrier (not shown). [0167] Referring now to Figures 8 to 13 there are shown further alternative embodiments of the present disclosure. In the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth illustrated embodiments, like numerals have, where possible, been used to denote like parts, albeit with the addition of the prefix "300”; "400”, "500”, "600”, "700” to indicate that these features belong to the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth embodiment, respectively. The alternative embodiments share many common features with the embodiment of Figures 1 to 7, therefore only the differences from the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 7, and described above, will be described in any greater detail.

[0168] Referring to Figure 8, there is shown a blank 310 comprising a plurality of panels 312, 314, 316, 318, 320, including a main panel 312 for forming a lower wall or engaging panel of a carrier (not shown). The blank 310 is substantially similar in construction to the blank 110 of Figure 3 albeit the end closure structures are provided with modified inner top panel flaps 338A, 338B and modified first and fifth anchor flaps 328A, 328B. The inner top panel flaps 338A, 338B have been shortened so as to be shorter in length than second top panel 320 to which they are hingedly connected by respective fold lines 337 A, 337B. Free side edges of each of the inner top panel flaps 338A, 338B are chamfered or filleted.

[0169] Each of the first and fifth anchor flaps 328A, 328B have been extended so as to be equal in width dimension as the first top panel 318. A free edge of the first and fifth anchor flaps 328A, 328B, opposing a hinged connection to the first top panel 318, is shaped or recessed to be complementary to, or at least is shaped to avoid obscuring, an article receiving opening A5 in the first top panel 318 disposed adjacent to one of the first and fifth anchor flaps 328A, 328B.

[0170] The blank 310 comprises first and second end closure structures comprising first and second end panels 322A, 322B, respectively. Each of the first and second end panels 322A, 322B is hingedly connected to a respective end of the main panel 312 by a hinged connection in the form of a fold line 321 A, 321 B. The fold lines 321 A, 321 B each comprise at least one first portion PF1 and at least one second portion PF2. The illustrated embodiment comprises a pair of end portions PF1 and a second or medial portion PF2 disposed between the pair of end portions PF1. The at least one first portion PF1 , or pair of end portions PF1 , comprise a first fold resistance and the second medial portion PF2 comprises a second fold resistance. The second fold resistance is lower than the first fold resistance. The at least one first portion PF1 , or pair of end portions PF1 , may be defined by one or more cutlines and one of more connection portions. The second medial portion PF2 may be defined by one or more cutlines and one of more connection portions. The fold resistance of the second medial portion PF2 may be reduced compared to the at least one first portion PF1 , or pair of end portions PF1 , by including a greater proportion or ratio of cutline to connection portion than that of the at least one first portion PF1 , or the pair of end portions PF1 .

[0171] The blank 310 comprises a plurality of panels 318B, 318C, 318D for forming a brace or keel structure for increasing the rigidity of the carrier. The brace or keel structure may take the form of a beam extending longitudinally of the carrier.

[0172] The plurality of beam forming panels 318B, 318C, 318D is hingedly connected to the first top panel 318. A first beam panel 318B is hingedly connected to the first top panel 318 by a hinged connection in the form of a fold line 317B. A second beam panel 318C, also referred to herein as floor panel 318C, is hingedly connected to the first beam panel 318B by a hinged connection in the form of a fold line 317C. A third beam panel 318D is hingedly connected to the second beam panel 318C by a hinged connection in the form of a fold line 317D.

[0173] The second beam panel 318C comprises at least one first locking element L1 , the illustrated embodiment comprises two first locking elements L1. The first locking elements L1 take the form of a locking tab receiving opening and may be defined, in part, by a first, major, locking tab 380 struck from, or defined within, the second beam panel 318C and hingedly connected thereto. The locking tab receiving opening is defined, in part, by a second, minor, locking tab 382 struck from, or defined within, the second beam panel 318C and hingedly connected thereto by a hinged connection in the form of a fold line 383.

[0174] The locking tab receiving opening comprises a waist or restriction disposed between opposed ends thereof, the first, major, tab 380 and second, minor, tab 382 are separated from each other by a cut line or frangible line 385. The cut line or frangible line 385 may be linear and may be parallel to the fold line 383 hinging the second, minor, tab 382 to the second beam panel 318C. The cut line or frangible line 385 may be perpendicular to the fold lines 317C, 317D. The cut line or frangible line 385 may extend across the locking tab receiving opening at or about the waist. The second, minor, tab 382 defines, at least in part, a head portion of the locking tab receiving opening. The first, major, tab 380 defines, at least in part, a main body portion of the locking tab receiving opening.

[0175] The first, major, tab 380 is thus shortened when compared to the first locking tab 180 of the embodiment shown in Figure 3. This reduced length may facilitate insertion of a second locking tab 350 provided in the second top panel 320 into the locking tab receiving opening. The shorter length of the first, major, tab 380 may help to ensure that the second locking tab 350 passes the first, major, tab 380 such that a free end edge of the first, major, tab 380 engages a face of the second locking tab 350 so as to prevent or inhibit separation of the second locking tab 350 from the locking tab receiving opening. In this way the first, major, tab 380 may confine the second locking tab 350 in the head portion of the locking tab receiving opening.

[0176] In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 8, the locking tab receiving opening and / or the first locking tab 380 are generally greater in width than the second beam panel 318C. The locking tab receiving opening and / or the first locking tab 380, or at least portions thereof, interrupt the hinged connections between the second beam panel 318C and each of the first and third beam panels 318B, 318D. The locking tab receiving opening and / or the first locking tab 380 comprises a pair of opposed arcuate cutline sections extending into a respective one of the third beam panel 318D and first beam panel 318B.

[0177] The blank 310 comprises third locking elements RC in the form of a receiver opening in the main panel 312. The receiver opening may be defined, in part, by a respective first major receiving tab 370 struck from the main panel 312 and hingedly connected thereto by a hinged connection in the form of a fold line 371. The receiver opening is defined, in part, by a second, minor, receiving tab 372 struck from, or defined within, the main panel 312. The second, minor, receiving tab 372 is hingedly connected to the main panel 312 by a hinged connection in the form of a fold line 373.

[0178] The receiver opening in the main panel 312 and / or receiving tabs 370, 372 are shaped similarly to the locking tab receiving opening and / or the locking tabs 380, 382 such that the receiver opening defines a waist or restriction.

[0179] The second beam panel 318C comprises a first width or linear dimension W2 defined between the fold line 317C, hinging the first beam panel 318B to the second keel panel 318C, and the fold line 317D, hinging the third beam panel 318D to the second beam panel 318C.

[0180] The main panel 312 comprises a first row of article engaging devices RT and a second row of article engaging devices RT. In the illustrated embodiment, each row comprises three article engaging devices RT. The article receiver openings of the article engaging devices RT in the first row of article engaging devices RT are spaced apart from the article receiver openings of the article engaging devices RT in the second row of article engaging devices RT by a second linear dimension W4. The second linear dimension W4 is greater than the first linear dimension W2.

[0181] In order to stabilize the keel structure, and / or maintain the second beam panel 318C in a fixed position in which each of the openings in the second beam panel 318C is aligned with a respective receiver opening in the main panel 312, the second beam panel 318C comprises alignment or spacer tabs T3, T4. The second beam panel 318C comprises at least one pair of spacer tabs T3, T4; the illustrated embodiment comprises two pairs of spacer tabs T3, T4. Each pair of spacer tabs T3, T4 comprises a first spacer tab T3, T4 struck from the first beam panel 318B and integral with the second beam panel 324 and a second spacer tab T3, T4 struck from the third beam panel 318D and integral with the second beam panel 318C. The first and second spacer tabs T3, T4 are arranged in opposition to each other so as to increase the effective maximum width of the second beam panel 318C. Each of the first and second spacer tabs T3, T4 comprises a free edge defined by a respective cutline C3, C4. A free edge of the first spacer tab T3, T4 is disposed a third linear dimension W3, at the widest location, from a free edge of the second spacer tab T3, T4 In this way, the pair of spacer tabs T3, T4 define a maximum effective width dimension W3 of the second beam panel 318C.

[0182] The maximum effective width dimension W3 of the second beam panel 318C is greater than the first width or linear dimension W2 defined between fold line 318C and fold line 318D.

[0183] The maximum effective width dimension W3 of the second beam panel 318C may be approximately equal or equal to the second linear dimension W4 defined between a pair of opposed receiver openings or between the engaging tabs 340B of a pair of opposed article engaging devices RT.

[0184] In this way, the engaging tabs 340B of a pair of opposed article engaging devices RT provide reference points or devices to position the second beam panel 318C therebetween. In embodiments in which the engaging tabs 340B are omitted, the articles B received in each of the pair of opposed article engaging devices RT may provide reference points or devices to position the second beam panel 318C therebetween.

[0185] The second top panel 320 may comprise at least one article receiving aperture A2. The illustrated embodiment comprises a plurality of article receiving apertures A2, specifically, but not limited to, six article receiving apertures A2. In the illustrated embodiment, the article receiving apertures A2 are arranged in a matrix or array, specifically, but not limited to, a 2 x 3 matrix or array. The, or each, article receiving aperture A2 is disposed in vertical registry with a respective one of the at least one article engaging structures RT. The article receiving aperture A2 is defined by a cutline, the cutline may be configured such that a first portion SE of the perimeter of the article receiving aperture A2 is scalloped or serrated in shape and a second portion NSE of the perimeter is not scalloped or serrated, that is to say it is smooth or featureless -free from perceptible projections, lumps, or indentations- and may be arcuate in shape. The second portion NSE of the perimeter may be disposed to be opposed to the hinged connection, fold line 319 between the second top panel 320 and the second side panel 316; this may be advantageous when assembling the carrier, specifically when folding the second top panel 320 with respect to the second side panel 316 so that an upper end of a respective article is received in each of the article receiving apertures A2. The non-serrated or smooth portion NSE may have a reduced article insertion resistance to allow the article to be more easily received. The non-serrated portion NSE of the perimeter of the article receiving apertures A2 may allow the second top panel 320 to pass the articles by providing increased clearance without significantly compromising grip upon the articles when received. The non-serrated portion NSE may occupy less than half the perimeter of article receiving apertures A2 and may be less than one quarter of the perimeter of article receiving apertures A2. The non-serrated portion NSE may occupy a sector of the article receiving apertures A2 the radii of which subtend an angle of up to 60° (sextant), in the embodiment of Figure 8 the radii of the sector define an angle of about 30°.

[0186] Referring to Figure 9, there is shown a blank 410 comprising a plurality of panels 412, 414, 416, 418, 420, including a main panel 412 for forming a lower wall or engaging panel of a carrier (not shown). [0303] It will be recognized that as used herein, directional references such as "top", "bottom", "base”, "front", "back", "end", "side", "inner", "outer", "upper" and "lower" do not necessarily limit the respective panels to such orientation, but may merely serve to distinguish these panels from one another.

[0304] As used herein, the terms "hinged connection” and "fold line” refer to all manner of lines that define hinge features of the blank, facilitate folding portions of the blank with respect to one another, or otherwise indicate optimal panel folding locations for the blank. Any reference to "hinged connection” should not be construed as necessarily referring to a single fold line only; indeed, a hinged connection can be formed from two or more fold lines wherein each of the two or more fold lines may be either straight / li near or curved / curvi linear in shape. When linear fold lines form a hinged connection, they may be disposed parallel with each other or be slightly angled with respect to each other. When curvilinear fold lines form a hinged connection, they may intersect each other to define a shaped panel within the area surrounded by the curvilinear fold lines. A typical example of such a hinged connection may comprise a pair of arched or arcuate fold lines intersecting at two points such that they define an elliptical panel therebetween. A hinged connection may be formed from one or more linear fold lines and one or more curvilinear fold lines. A typical example of such a hinged connection may comprise a combination of a linear fold line and an arched or arcuate fold line which intersect at two points such that they define a half-moon shaped panel therebetween.

[0305] As used herein, the term "fold line” may refer to one of the following: a scored line, an embossed line, a debossed line, a line of perforations, a line of short slits, a line of half-cuts, a single half-cut, an interrupted cutline, a line of aligned slits, a line of scores and any combination of the aforesaid options.

[0306] It should be understood that hinged connections and fold lines can each include elements that are formed in the substrate of the blank including perforations, a line of perforations, a line of short slits, a line of half-cuts, a single half-cut, a cutline, an interrupted cutline, slits, scores, embossed lines, debossed lines, any combination thereof, and the like. The elements can be dimensioned and arranged to provide the desired functionality. For example, a line of perforations can be dimensioned or designed with degrees of weakness to define a fold line and / or a severance line. The line of perforations can be designed to facilitate folding and resist breaking, to facilitate folding and facilitate breaking with more effort, or to facilitate breaking with little effort.

[0307] The phrase "in registry with” as used herein refers to the alignment of two or more elements in an erected carton, such as an aperture formed in a first of two overlapping panels and a second aperture formed in a second of two overlapping panels. Those elements in registry with each other may be aligned with each other in the direction of the thickness of the overlapping panels. For example, when an aperture in a first panel is "in registry with” a second aperture in a second panel that is placed in an overlapping arrangement with the first panel, an edge of the aperture may extend along at least a portion of an edge of the second aperture and may be aligned, in the direction of the thickness of the first and second panels, with the second aperture.
