Description

[0001] MODULAR PERISHABLE FOOD TRANSPORTATION BOX, METHOD OF ERECTING BOX AND METHOD OF THERMALLY INSULATING A FOOD ITEM

[0002] FIELD

[0003] The present invention relates to modular boxes for transporting food. More specifically, the present invention relates to modular boxes for maintaining edible food, and in particular seafood, at a suitable temperature during transportation.

[0004] BACKGROUND

[0005] The fish and seafood industry has a long-standing problem of needing to transport the product (i.e. fish, shellfish, seafood, crustations etc.) to market without exposing the product to temperatures which cause a shortening of shelf life or, in the worst case scenario, complete spoiling of the product such that it is inedible or of poor quality. For many types of fish and seafood products, it is desirable, once the product leaves the slaughterhouse (or other production facility), that the core temperature of the product is as close to zero degrees Celsius as possible. For some types of seafood, the shelf life can be shortened by as much as six days if the product is transported at four degrees Celsius instead of zero degrees Celsius.

[0006] Many large fish- and seafood-producing countries, for example the Scandinavian countries, are far from their main markets in central Europe. This results in the product often needing to travel several thousand kilometres to reach the market. Mass transport of the product is usually by trucks, aeroplanes, and boats, and can often take several days.

[0007] It is therefore imperative that a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution is provided to maintain the product at a suitable temperature in transit.

[0008] Standard industry practice is to use Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), also known by the brand name Styrofoam, boxes in standardised sizes to transport the product. EPS boxes are cheap to produce and, though they can be recycled, high transportation costs due to their low density and contamination from seafood residues makes recycling difficult and often economically unviable. Typically, EPS boxes are provided at the slaughterhouse, where the product is loaded into the boxes. Ice volumes in the range of 3-5 kg are then laid on top of the product within the box in an attempt to reduce the product temperature as much as possible during initial storage, transport and transfer of the product at its destination. The laying of ice on top of the product, however, is only suitable for some types of product. For example, laying ice on top of whole fish is viable only because the skin of the fish acts as a barrier for bacteria introduced by the ice. Products not having a skin barrier, such as fish fillets, are exposed to these bacteria which in turn can increase spoilage and reduce their shelf-life.

[0009] During transportation, the ice melts and the resulting meltwater becomes contaminated with blood or other matter originating from the product itself. It is not uncommon for hundreds of EPS boxes containing ice and product to be transported together, meaning hundreds of litres of meltwater may be present, potentially rendering the cargo unstable. As such, the EPS boxes typically have corner holes for drainage. The contaminated water then leaks from the EPS boxes into the wider transportation vehicle. This results in pools of contaminated water developing on boats or trucks, for example, and trails of contaminated water being left on roads. Governmental bodies of several countries have raised concerns over the spillage of such water on public roads. Additionally, the inside of the transportation vehicles often become covered in the contaminated water and are required to be thoroughly cleaned.

[0010] EPS boxes used in fish transportation are typically formed of two parts. A lower part comprises fixed side walls and a base and an upper part is in the form of a lid. The lower part is typically a unitary construction, thereby providing strength and rigidity to the box such that it can carry the load (fish and ice) without bending or collapsing.

[0011] As there is typically only a flow of fish and seafood products one-way, from the fish- and seafood- producing counties to those in central Europe, there is often only a need for EPS boxes in one direction. Some of the EPS boxes may be demolished, recycled and used for other purposes, but most of the EPS boxes are incinerated or deposited in landfills. One recent estimate reported that around 45-50% of EPS fish boxes in Europe end up in landfill. This is a serious environmental concern, with the Norwegian salmon industry alone using around 70 million EPS boxes each year. Further, even though some of the EPS boxes are recycled, there is still an adverse environmental impact associated with the constant production and recycling thereof. For example, EPS contains toxic substances, namely Styrene and Benzene. In order to make polystyrene expand to form EPS products such as fish boxes, special blowing agents are used including propane, pentane, methylene, chloride and chlorofluorocarbons. Given that EPS easily crumbles, many small, toxic pieces of EPS break off from boxes during use which end up in the wider environment. In particular, EPS pieces find their way to seas, contaminating the marine food chain and therefore, ultimately, the human diet.

[0012] Sufficient cleaning of EPS fish boxes such that they can be reused is very difficult to do in practice. It is particularly difficult to clean the joint where two walls, or a wall and the base, of the box meet. It is even more difficult to clean the corners of the boxes. In this connection, bacteria can easily build up within the boxes, which can be harmful if the bacteria are transferred to the fish which will be consumed by humans. For this reason alone, EPS boxes are often discarded once the product has reached its market. Even if the EPS boxes were to be cleaned and disinfected sufficient for reuse, the return trip back to the production facility is often prohibitively expensive. This is because products are often only sent in one direction. Further, due to the unitary construction, EPS boxes need to be transported on top of one another which results in a large amount of empty space present in the transportation vehicle.

[0013] Attempts have been made to overcome the above-mentioned problems with EPS boxes. For example, a multinational packaging and paper company developed an insulating box using paper fibres and starch which can be filled with ice. The paper-based packaging is made from a renewable resource and is fully recyclable. This solution, however, does not circumvent the high energy usage associated with the production and continual recycling of such products.

[0014] The invention has for its object to remedy or to reduce at least one of the drawbacks of the prior art, or at least provide a useful alternative to the prior art.

[0015] The object is achieved through features, which are specified in the description below and in the claims that follow. SUMMARY

[0206] Further, each of the cover members 200, 300 and side walls 400 may comprise one or more apertures defined therethrough, for reducing weight thereof. When the box 100 is fully assembled, the side walls 400 and the first and second cover members 200, 300 delineate an inner volume of the box for housing perishable food items for transport. Examples of perishable food items include seafood, fish, meat, fruit, and vegetables.

[0207] First and second cover members 200, 300

[0208] In the embodiment shown in Figure 1 , the first cover member 200 is a base, and the second cover member 300 is a lid.

[0209] The first cover member 200 and the second cover member 300 may be considered as being substantially identical. This means that these cover members 200, 300 are very similar but are not necessarily exactly the same, potentially having minor variations or differences between them that do not significantly impact their geometry or interchangeability. In other embodiments not shown, the first cover member 200 and the second cover member 300 are not substantially identical and are instead substantially different. This means that the cover members 200, 300 have variations or differences between them that significantly impact their geometry and interchangeability.

[0210] As seen in Figure 2, the first cover member 200 comprises a cover member engagement feature 210, which in the present embodiment is a slot 212 extending through the first cover member 200. The first cover member 200 further comprises a rectangular panel portion 214 and a rail portion 216 extending around a perimeter of the panel portion 214. The panel portion 214 is planar. The first cover member 200 also further comprises a bridge portion 220 connecting the rail portion 216 with the panel portion 214.

[0211] Each slot 212, of which there are ten in the present first cover member 200, extends between pairs of bridge portions 220 and between the panel portion 214 and the rail portion 216. As such, each slot 212 is bounded by two bridge portions 220, the panel portion 214, and the rail portion 216. In other words, each slot has four sides, two of which are formed by bridge portions 220, one of which is formed by the panel portion 214, and one of which is formed by the rail portion 216. In the present embodiment, there are ten bridge portions 220.

[0212] The rail portion 216 comprises a rail curved surface 218 extending along a portion thereof. In the present embodiment, the rail curved surface 218 extends along an inner portion thereof, and forms one side of each slot212. In other embodiments, the rail curved surface 218 may form one side of just one or more slots 212, and not necessarily one side of all of the slots 212. In the first embodiment 100, the rail portion 216 has a D-shaped crosssection, whereas in the second embodiment 100’ shown in Figs. 11A and 11 B the rail portion 216’ of the first cover member 200’ has a C-shaped cross-section. The rail portions 216, 216’ of both the first and second embodiments comprise the rail curved surfaces 218, 218’, i.e. the curved portions of the D- and C-shaped cross-section, extending along an inner portion of said rail portions 216, 216’. The C-shaped cross-section of the rail portion 216’ of the second embodiment improves manufacturability of the first cover member 200’ versus the first cover member 200. The second embodiment 100’ is identical to the first embodiment 100 in every other way.

[0213] In the present example, the first cover member 200 comprises three planes of substantial reflectional symmetry. The term ‘substantial reflectional symmetry’ means that the part being referred to is broadly symmetrical but may have portions either side of the plane of substantial reflectional symmetry with minor variations or differences between them that do not significantly impact their overall geometry.

[0214] The first cover member 200 in the example shown has a first cross-dimension 240 of 800 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, and a second cross-dimension 250 of 400 millimetres ± 15 millimetres. In other examples, however, the first and second cross-dimensions 240, 250 may be different, for example 200 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, 400 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, 600 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, 800 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, 1000 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, 1200 millimetres ± 15 millimetres. The first and second crossdimensions 240, 250 are perpendicular to one another. The thickness of the first cover member 200 may be 25 millimetres ± 5 millimetres, or may be larger, for example 15 millimetres ± 5 millimetres or smaller, for example 10 millimetres ± 5 millimetres.

[0215] In some examples, not shown, the first cover member 200 and / or the second cover member 300 comprises an insulating element which may be removable, and / or a cooling element which may be removable and / or activatable. Being activatable means that the first cover member 200 and / or the second cover member may, for example, be remotely or manually activated in order to cause an endothermic reaction in the material forming the cooling element.

[0216] In Fig. 1 , the modular reusable box 100 is shown in both a fully assembled state and a first configuration. In the first configuration, the cover member 200 and at least one side wall 400 are engaged such that movement of one relative to the other is restricted. More specifically, the first cover member 200 and side wall 400 are engaged such that translation of one relative to the other is restricted. Rotation of the first cover member 200 and the side wall 400 relative to one another may still be possible. Further, in the first configuration, the first cover member 200 and the at least one side wall 400 at least partly delineate an inner volume of the box for housing perishable food items for transport.

[0217] Being in the first configuration, however, does not require that the box 100 is fully assembled. For example, one side wall 400 in Fig. 9A is shown in the first configuration, and in Fig. 9B two side walls 400 are shown in the first configuration. In Fig. 11 A, three side walls are shown in the first configuration, and in Fig. 11 B four side walls are shown in the first configuration.

[0218] In a second configuration, the various components of the modular reusable box, for example the first cover member 200 and side wall 400, are separate and do not engage such that movement of one relative to the other is restricted.

[0219] As can be seen in Figs. 4A to 7B, each side wall 400 comprises a first side surface 401 , a second side surface 402, a first end surface 403, a second end surface 404, a first edge surface 405, and a second edge surface 406. When assembled, the first side surface 401 corresponds with the outside of the box 100, the second side surface 402 at least partially delineates the inner volume of the box, the end surfaces 403, 404 abut end surfaces 402, 404 of other walls, the first edge surface 405 abuts the first cover member 200, and the second edge surface 406 abuts the second cover member 300.

[0220] Each side wall 400 comprises a first engagement feature 410 for engaging the first cover member 200. The first engagement feature 410 extends primarily along the first edge surface 405 and also extends along a portion of the second side surface 402.

[0221] The first engagement feature 410 reversibly and rotatably couples the side wall 400 and the first cover member 200. In other examples, not all of the side walls 400 comprise the first engagement feature 410. The first engagement feature 410 comprises a flange 412, and a first curved surface 414. The first engagement feature 410 and the first cover member engagement feature 210 interlock such that their relative movement is restricted. As above, this relative movement may refer to their relative translation, and not their relative rotation as they may remain rotatably coupled. The flange 412 extends at least partially through the corresponding slot 212 of the first cover member 200 when assembled. The curved surface 414 of the first engagement feature 410 corresponds with the rail curved surface 218, and its curvature is such that the end of the flange 412 prevents movement of the side wall 400 and first cover member 200 relative to each other when the flange 412 is located within the corresponding slot 212 of the first cover member 200.

[0222] As can be seen in Fig. 4A to Fig. 7B, the flange 412 comprises either two or three end portions 413. In other embodiments not shown, there may be just one end portion 413, or more end portions 413, for example four, five, six, seven, ten, or fifty. Each end portion 413 of the side wall 400 is separated by a gap. When the side wall 400 is rotated relative to the first cover member 200, the bridge portion 220 enters the gap.

[0223] In the present example, each side wall 400 comprises two planes of substantial reflectional symmetry.

[0224] The four side walls 400 comprise a first pair of substantially identical side walls 400 and a second pair of substantially identical side walls 400, wherein the first and second pairs of substantially identical side walls have different dimensions.

[0225] At least one side wall 400 has a first cross-dimension 440 of 400 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, and a second cross-dimension 442 of 170 millimetres ± 15 millimetres. In the present example, two of the side walls 400 have such dimensions. At least one side wall 400 has a first cross-dimension 440 of 800 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, and a second cross-dimension 442 of 170 millimetres ± 15 millimetres. In the present example, two of the side walls 400 have such dimensions. In other examples, however, the first and second cross-dimensions 440, 442 and may be smaller or larger, for example 50 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, all the way up to 300 millimetres ± 15 millimetres or more. The first and second cross-dimensions 440, 442 may also be the same for all side walls 400.

[0226] Each side wall 400 also comprises a second engagement feature 420 for engaging the second cover member 300. The second engagement feature 420 extends primarily along the second edge surface 406 and also extends along a portion of the second side surface 402. The second engagement feature 420 comprises a flange 422 and a second curved surface 424. However, in other embodiments the second engagement feature 420 may take a different form, for example not having a second curved surface 424.

[0227] The second engagement feature 420 and the second cover member engagement feature 310 interlock such that their relative movement is restricted. As above, this relative movement may refer to their relative translation, and not their relative rotation as they may be rotatably coupled. The flange 422 extends at least partially through the corresponding slot 312 of the first cover member 200 when assembled. The curved surface 424 of the second engagement feature 420 corresponds with the rail curved surface 318, and its curvature is such that the end of the flange 422 prevents movement of the side wall 400 and second cover member 300 relative to each other when the flange 422 is located within the corresponding slot 312 of the second cover member 300.

[0228] In some examples, the first and second engagement features 410, 420, are substantially identical. For example, the flanges 412, 422 may be substantially identical. The second engagement feature 420 may engage the second cover member 300 by interference and / or snap fit.

[0229] The flange 412 of the first engagement feature 410 may have a first dimension 416 which is less than an equivalent first dimension 426 of the flange 422 of the second engagement feature 420.

[0230] In some examples, one or more of the flanges 412, 422 may have an elasticity modulus such that a snap fit with the first and / or second cover member 200, 300 is possible. The flange 412, 422 may be capable of deforming in order to fit through the corresponding slot 212.

[0231] The first and second engagement features 410, 420 may be formed integrally (i.e. as one single unit) with the rest of the side wall 400 they are a part of.

[0232] In some examples, not shown, one or more of the side walls 400 comprise an insulating element which may be removable, and / or a cooling element which may be removable and / or activatable. Being activatable means that the cooling element may, for example, be remotely or manually activated in order to cause an endothermic reaction in the material forming the cooling element.

[0233] Wall feature 470 Each side wall 400 comprises at least one wall engagement feature 450 for engaging at least one other side wall 400. In the present example, each side wall 400 comprises one wall engagement feature 450 at each of the first and second end surfaces 403, 404. Each wall engagement feature 450 in the present example is configured to engage the wall engagement feature 450 of another side wall 400 by interference fit, to reversibly couple the side walls to one another and prevent rotation of the side walls relative to one another.

[0234] Not every wall engagement feature must be the same, however, as the wall engagement feature 450 may comprise a channel 452 and / or a protrusion 454. In the present example, one opposing pair of side walls 400 comprise wall engagement features 450 comprising a channel 452, and the other opposing pair of side walls 400 comprise wall engagement features 450 comprising a protrusion 454.

[0235] When fully assembled, the box has a first cross-dimension of 800 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, a second cross-dimension of 400 millimetres ± 15 millimetres, and a third cross-dimension of 220 millimetres ± 30 millimetres in the first configuration.

[0236] Method of manufacture

[0237] The different components 200, 300, 400 of the box 100 may be manufactured in many different ways, for example using injection moulding, sandwich lamination (where an inner core, for example a foam, is covered in at least one thin layer of material), and / or press forming, for example by pressurising several layers of material at elevated temperature in order to combine them.

[0238] The components 200, 300, 400 may be formed of a polymer. Examples of suitable polymers include polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), or polypropylene (PP). The components 200, 300, 400 may be formed of only one material. This may assist with recycling.

[0239] Method of assembly

[0240] Assembly of the box is shown in Fig. 8A to 10B.

[0241] When the box 100 is at a first stage of assembly, as shown in Fig. 8A and 8B, the side walls 400 are placed on the first cover member 200 such that the first engagement features 410 rest above the slots 212. When the box 100 is at a second stage of assembly, as shown in Fig. 9A, side walls 400 having wall engagement features 450 with protrusions 454 are rotated relative to the first cover member 200 such that the flange 412 of the first engagement feature enters the slot 212. Just one of the side walls 400 having protrusions 454 is shown as rotated in Fig. 9A, though the opposite wall also having protrusions 454 would be rotated shortly afterwards. When the walls 400 are rotated with respect to the first cover member 200 from parallel with the first cover member 200 to perpendicular, the side walls 400 remain free to rotate back down. The first curved surface 414 may have a varying radius of curvature so that rotating the side wall 400 relative to the first cover member 200 such that the side wall 400 and the first cover member 200 are perpendicular tightens the side wall 400 against the first cover member 200. As such, when in this perpendicular position, static friction between the side wall 400 and the first cover member 200 prevent entirely free rotation and thus the side wall 400 from flopping down, to parallel with the first cover member 200.

[0242] The one side wall 400 having channels 452 is then rotated up and engages with the protrusions 454 of the wall engagement features 450 of the walls 400 already perpendicular with the first cover member 200. Figures 9B and 9C show a detailed view of the engagement of a channel 452 with a protrusion 454.

[0243] Fig. 10A shows the box 100 at a third stage of assembly, with three of the four side walls 400 engaged. The last side wall 400 having channels 452 is then rotated up and engages with the remaining protrusions 454 of the wall engagement features 450 of the walls 400 already perpendicular with the first cover member 200.

[0244] Fig. 10B shows the box 100 at a fourth stage of assembly, with four side walls 400 engaged with one another and the first cover member 200. Typically, perishable food items and ice would then be added to the inner volume of the box 100. The second cover member 300 is then snap or interference fitted onto the second engagement features 420 of the side walls 400, resulting in the fully assembled box of Fig. 1 .

[0245] During any stage of assembly, the cooling element of the first cover member 200, second cover member 300, and / or side walls 400, if present, may be activated.

[0246] Alternative modular reusable box An alternative modular reusable box will now be described. The alternative modular reusable box (not shown) is identical to the box 100 described above, aside from the following features.

[0247] Instead of the cover members and side walls rotatably engaging one another, the cover members and side walls are configured to engage each other by interference fit. This means that a side wall may be pressed onto the cover member, for example, or vice versa. The engagement features of the cover members and side walls may each comprise an aperture or slit defined therethrough, much like the cover members 200, 300 of the box 100 which comprise slots 212, 312.

[0248] The cover members and side walls may comprise one or more planes of substantial reflectional symmetry and / or are substantially rotationally symmetrical about one, two, or three axes of rotation.
