Abstract
Description
[0001] Delivered Item Support Device
[0002] The invention relates to a delivered item support device, to receive items delivered to a property when the intended recipient is unable to receive the delivery.
[0003] The use of an external post-box at a property to receive mail is known. This use is extended to large external post-boxes to receive small parcels. This is convenient for those who may not be home for a delivery but this system has several problems.
[0004] Firstly, such boxes publicise and advertise that something of value may be contained within; this in turn provides criminals with the motive to break into the box; in effect such boxes are vulnerable because they are visible.
[0005] Secondly, such post-boxes take up a substantial space outside the property they serve and are therefore inconvenient by way of passage and ground space.
[0006] Thirdly, such post-boxes are generally expensive, since they need to be constructed to be both secure and weather proof.
[0007] Fourthly, such boxes typically require laborious installation since in order to be secure they require fixing to a wall or floor with robust bolts or other such means.
[0008] Fifthly, such boxes are generally unsightly and aesthetically unpleasing on the eye and therefore disturb the front area of the building or garden.
[0009] The present invention aim to mitigate at least one of the problems with known arrangements.
[0010] The inventor has found that this can be achieved by providing a box or device designed and arranged for internal attachment to and integration with an existing external structure in the form of an outdoor bin, and in particular a wheelie bin.
[0011] A. GB2298456A
[0012] GB2298456A (referred to below as “GB229”’) is entitled, “LETTERBOX OPENING AND LETTER PROTECTION” and its introductory paragraph reads, “[t]his invention relates to containers, platforms, or the like for catching mail and other material delivered through a slot-like letter box opening provided in a door and for controlling access there through discloses a device for collecting mail and protecting a letter box opening in a door.” The device is disclosed solely in the context of use with a letter box opening in a door, and there is no mention anywhere of its use with a bin of any sort. In addition, it is conceptually and practically different from the present invention, and is not readily transferrable to a wheelie bin, for the following reasons.
[0013] 1. NO LETTERBOX
[0014] GB229’ is devised for placement on a door with a letterbox and to operate specifically with that letterbox. This is clearly a different conceptual realm not readily transferable to a wheelie bin which obviously has no letterbox.
[0015] 2. PROTECTIVE PURPOSE 1
[0016] A first stated purpose of GB229’ is to protect letters from falling on the floor of the house and the consequent ‘hazard’ of damage by foot traffic or obstructing the door opening. By contrast, the purpose of the present invention is to protect parcels against weather I theft and refuse contamination.
[0017] 3. PROTECTIVE PURPOSE 2
[0018] A second purpose of this device is to provide lockable security against unwanted material being introduced into the house interior; (such as ‘flammable material for the purpose of arson’). By contrast, the present invention has no restriction on unwanted material being introduced but the reverse - it offers lockable security against material being removed from the bin interior.
[0019] 4. PROTECTIVE PURPOSE 3
[0020] A further stated purpose of this device is to replace standard on-door mail cages to protect the wall interior of the house from damage when the door is opened. By contrast, the present invention has no function by way of protecting adjacent structures but the reverse - it specifically uses adjacent structures (bin walls) as both protection and support.
[0021] 5. CONTRASTING INTERIOR The cited device is devised to hold letters within the clean interior of a house; the present invention is devised to hold parcels within the contaminated interior of a bin.
[0022] 6. SECURITY AND STABILITY
[0023] The cited device is located in a secure and stable environment; the present invention is located in an insecure and radically unstable environment - one subject to regular and violent human and machine handling.
[0024] CASE SUMMARY WITH REGARD TO GB2298456A:
[0025] The above comparisons demonstrate that these two devices are radically different conceptually and practically and by way of location and design and operation and purpose. Further there is no reference or suggestion within the description or drawings that would lead a skilled person to consider use or transfer of device GB2298456A from the fixed safe secure stable and clean interior of a house door to the unfixed unsafe insecure unstable and contaminated interior of a mobile plastic bin subject to regular violent human and machine handling. I would therefore submit that using device GB2298456A with a wheelie bin would not be obvious to a person skilled in the art in either principle or practice.
[0026] B. JPH08182604A
[0027] In this document, under “BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION” and “Field of the Invention” it is stated that, “[t]he present invention relates to a receiving box which uses a wall surface of a house, such as a door, as a mounting surface and is used as a housing equipment for receiving parcels, postal parcels, and other delivered goods.”
[0028] NATURE OF ENCLOSURE
[0029] A first observation is that this device is specifically described as a ‘receiving box’ i.e. the delivered goods support surface is horizontal when used. This is structurally significant.
[0030] COMPLEXITY & OPERATION
[0031] This box device is complex in construction employing multiple moving and hinged components and - based on the drawings - in operation requires five separate steps to open and five more steps to close. STRUCTURE AND FIXINGS
[0032] This box device operates via telescopic extension; an arrangement which has a high structural and stress cost. The strength and density of material and scale of fixings required to support this device when extended telescopically and cantilevered from a vertical plane are industrial in scale; most especially when such structure and fixings must contend with sudden loading and sustained holding of multiple potentially heavy items.
[0033] SIZE & WEIGHT
[0034] This device is both large and necessarily heavy in structural material and fixings.
[0035] DIFFERENCES
[0036] 1. CONCEPT DIFFERENCE
[0037] On a basic conceptual level a complex telescopic unfolding box bolted to a vertical surface is a radically different mechanism to the embodiments which form the basis of my invention.
[0038] 2. STRUCTURAL SUPPORT
[0039] While this device is devised for attachment to a vertical surface such attachment is only feasible to a solid structurally robust surface allowing deep fixings (such as “a wall surface of a house, such as a door” as described in the document). Specifically, the attachment is simply by way of two vertically orientated brackets, one at each side of the device, and three screws which pass through each bracket to attach it to the vertical surface. This arrangement means that the device can only be securely attached to a solid structurally robust surface allowing deep fixings. Wheelie bins are made from HDPE; this material is robust with good tensile strength but also highly crystalline and sensitive to stress cracking and prone to brittle failure. This is exacerbated by exposure to UV since UV exposed HDPE shows a reduction of elongation via embrittlement. In this context the size and scale of required fixings and attendant structural weight of this device is such that attachment to the thin HDPE wall of a plastic container in extended parcel-weighted mode would exert a level of leveraged gravitational stress such as to distend and fracture the bin wall in short order. Which is to say a telescopic cantilevered container is entirely infeasible in the context of a thin wall structure. And this would be evident to a man skilled in the art. 3. WEIGHT & SIZE
[0040] Even when the device is retracted and the weight factor is base rather than loaded such weight is an issue for bin mobility and the handling weight limits for bins that are full. In addition the protruding bulk of this device would both reduce the internal volume of the bin and likely inhibit trash flow during emptying.
[0041] 4. HANDLING
[0042] Even with the most robust industrial fixings a device of this size and weight would in time sustain damage from the brutal mechanical violence involved in automated emptying.
[0043] 5. CONTEXT COMPLEXITY
[0044] While the complex operational steps required to unfold and fold this box are feasible in an open area such as the front of a house such an operation would be lengthy difficult and impracticable within the close confines of a wheelie bin.
[0045] CASE SUMMARY WITH REGARD TO JPH08182604A:
[0046] I would contend there is no reference or suggestion within the description or drawings that would lead a skilled person to consider use or transfer of this device to a mobile plastic bin. On the contrary there are - as detailed above - a range of reasons why this would not be possible. I would therefore submit that using device JPH08182604A with a wheelie bin would not be obvious to a person skilled in the art in either principle or practice.
[0047] In a first aspect of the invention there is provided a wheelie bin delivered item support device, adapted for mounting on a wall of a wheelie bin inside the bin, the device comprising a delivered item support member arranged to extend away from an inner surface of the wall into the bin cavity so as to provide a delivered item support surface. A delivered item may be placed on the delivered item support surface.
[0048] A wheelie bin is a type outdoor bin on wheels. The wheels allow the bin to be moved more easily. Although the invention is particularly applicable to wheelie bins, it is also applicable generally to outdoor bins and outdoor wheeled bins. The device may be configured to support a delivered item above the floor of the bin. Therefore, the delivered item is less likely to come into contact with any waste or liquid at the bottom of the bin, which reduces the likelihood of soiling or damage to the item. When the device is mounted on the bin, the support member may be spaced away from the floor of the bin, for example by at least 25% or by at least 50% of the height of the bin. Again, this spacing reduces the likelihood of soiling or damage to the item.
[0049] Preferably, the support member is arranged to extend away from the inner wall into the bin cavity to create a space into which a delivered item can be placed on the support surface.
[0050] Preferably, the support member is arranged to extend away from the inner wall into the bin cavity at an oblique angle.
[0051] Preferably, when the device is mounted on the wall, the support member is movable between an extended position, in which the support member extends further into the bin cavity, and a retracted position, in which the support member extends less far into the bin cavity.
[0052] The support member may be held in its retracted position by a retaining means such as a latch or catch.
[0053] The device may further comprise a base section which is adapted for mounting on the wall and is connected to the support member.
[0054] The base section is preferably adapted for mounting on the inner wall.
[0055] Preferably, when the device is mounted on the wall, the base section lies side by side with the inner wall.
[0056] Preferably, the support member is movable with respect to the base section to allow movement between the extended position and retracted position.
[0057] Preferably, when the support member is in the retracted position, the support member and the base section lie side by side. Preferably, the support member is pivotally connected to the base section, for example, where the support member is rigid.
[0058] Preferably, the support member is collapsible towards the inner wall. For example, this may be because the support member is made from a flexible material, or because the support member includes hinged sections.
[0059] The support member may be made from a flexible material, for example a net or slung fabric.
[0060] The device may further comprise a lid arranged to extend away from the inner wall into the bin cavity so as to at least partially cover the delivered item support surface.
[0061] The lid may extend further than the delivered item support member, and may entirely cover the delivered item support surface.
[0062] The lid may be connected to the base section, and may extend away from the base section into the bin cavity.
[0063] Preferably, when the device is mounted on the wall, the lid is movable between an extended position, in which the lid extends further into the bin cavity, and a retracted position, in which the lid extends less far into the bin cavity.
[0064] Preferably, the lid is pivotally connected to the base section.
[0065] Preferably, the lid is arranged to extend away from the inner wall into the bin cavity to connect to the support member to form closed space.
[0066] Preferably, the device further comprises a device lid fixing formation connected to the support member to provide a fixing point by which the lid of the device can be secured in the closed position.
[0067] Preferably, the device lid fixing formation is arranged to extend above the upper surface of the lid of the device when the lid is closed. Preferably, the device lid fixing formation is arranged to extend through a hole in the upper surface of the lid of the device when the lid is closed.
[0068] Preferably, the lid is slidable into or along the base section for storage.
[0069] The device may further comprise a bin lid fixing formation to provide a fixing point by which the lid of the bin can be secured in the closed position.
[0070] The bin lid fixing formation may be arranged to extend out of the bin cavity.
[0071] The bin lid fixing formation may have a hole in it, for example through which a locking member can be passed.
[0072] Preferably, the bin lid fixing formation is arranged to extend out of the bin cavity.
[0073] Preferably, the bin lid fixing formation is arranged to extend above the upper surface of the lid of the bin when the lid is closed.
[0074] Preferably, the bin lid fixing formation is arranged to extend through a hole in the upper surface of the lid of the bin when the lid is closed.
[0075] Preferably, the support member is detachable from the base section.
[0076] Preferably, the device is adapted for detachment from the wall of the wheelie bin by hand without the use of tools.
[0077] Preferably, the detachment is by lifting or sliding the device with respect to the bin.
[0078] Preferably, the base section has a hole for a screw or bolt for attaching the base section to the inner wall.
[0079] The device may comprise a hook formation by which the device can be hung on an upper edge of the wall of the bin. The hook formation may be rigid. This helps prevent the device coming away from the bin when a heavy delivered item is placed on the support surface.
[0080] The hook formation may extend down an outer surface of the wall, but this is not essential.
[0081] The hook formation may be provided at an edge of the support member or base section.
[0082] The hook formation may extend along at least half of the edge of the support member or base section. The hook formation may extend along at least half of the upper edge of the wall of the bin. Providing a substantial hook formation in this way helps to hold the device securely on the edge of the bin.
[0083] The hook formation may have a flange which extends along an edge of the support member or base section.
[0084] The hook formation may be resilient, and may grip the wall of the bin in use.
[0085] The device may comprise a second hook formation by which the device can be hung on an upper edge of an opposing wall of the bin.
[0086] The device may comprise a bolt or screw for attaching the device to the inner wall.
[0087] The screw may be self-tapping.
[0088] The device may have a hole for a bolt or screw for attaching the device to the inner wall.
[0089] Preferably, the support member comprises a plurality of panels which are pivotally connected to each other.
[0090] One panel (preferably, the panel nearer to the pivotal connection between the support member and the base section) may overlap the pivotal connection between it and another panel. In a second aspect of the invention there is provided a wheelie bin assembly comprising a wheelie bin and a wheelie bin delivered item support device according to the first aspect, wherein the delivered item support member is mounted on the wall of the wheelie bin inside the bin.
[0091] In the second aspect, preferably, when the delivered item support member extends away from an inner surface of the wall, the delivered item support member is supported by an opposite wall of the wheelie bin.
[0092] Preferably, the support member is arranged to extend away from an inner surface of the wall into the bin cavity at an angle of at least 45 degrees with respect to the wall of the bin or the base section of the support device.
[0093] Preferably, the support device spans at least half the width of the wheelie bin.
[0094] In a third aspect of the invention there is provided a wheelie bin kit comprising a wheelie bin and a wheelie bin delivered item support device according to the first aspect.
[0095] In a fourth aspect of the invention there is provided a wheelie bin comprising a delivered item support device integrally formed with a wall of the wheelie bin inside the bin, the device comprising a delivered item support member extending away from the inner wall into the bin cavity so as to provide a delivered item support surface.
[0096] In a fifth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a waste bin parcel box;
[0097] The box may comprise a waste bin anchor unit;
[0098] The anchor unit may an independent component of the box;
[0099] The anchor unit may be integral to the box;
[0100] The anchor unit may comprise a frame

[0165] The box may comprise an alarm mechanism;
[0166] The box may comprise a means or mechanism to generate an alarm when the box is interfered with or attacked or forced open when closed;
[0167] Or for example when the bin is moved or otherwise interfered with;
[0168] Such an alarm may be audible;
[0169] Such an alarm may be by way of a remote alert; for example to an application on a phone or a receiving apparatus;
[0170] Such an alarm may combine different alarm systems; for example both audible and remote.
[0171] Preferably, the support member, in the extended position is adjustable to move between a first support position and a second support position wherein a volume of the bin cavity defined above the support member is greater in the second support position than in the first support position. Adjustability of the support member especially in the extended position allows the space inside the bin to be utilised appropriately. In a situation where a larger volume is required to accommodate refuse within the wheelie bin, i.e. below the support member, the support member can be moved to the first support position to increase the volume of the bin cavity below the support member. Alternatively, in a situation where a larger volume is required to accommodate larger delivered item, i.e. above the support member, the support member can be moved to the second support position to increase the volume of the bin cavity above the support member. More preferably, the support member is adjustable to move vertically between the first support position and the second support position.
[0172] Preferably, a bottom-most point of the support member is lower in the second support position than in the first support position. Therefore, the support member can be moved from the second support position to the first support position to avoid the support member and delivered item being soiled by high level of refuse in the bin.
[0173] Preferably, the support member is configured to be attachable to the opposite wall of the wheelie bin. The opposite wall may have a base section similar to the one on the inner wall of the wheelie bin and may have additional means to receive the support member. This is advantageous as it would enable easy manipulation of the support member and allows a user to quickly and easily adjust the support member.
[0174] Preferably, the length of the delivered item support member in its extending direction is adjustable to move between the first support position and the second support position. A flexible support member that can also be adjustable would enable a user to quickly manipulate the length of the support member between the two support positions. In an embodiment not shown in the figures, the support member may not completely reach the opposite wall. The support member may have a telescopic component that can be extended to reach the opposite wall. This is particularly advantageous to allow simultaneous access to the volume below and above the support member (when the telescopic component is retracted and the support member does not completely reach the opposite wall in the bin). The retractability of the telescopic component also effectively increases the volume defined above the support member (by extending the telescopic component to reach the opposite wall of the bin) without affecting the bin cavity below the support member which may contain the refuse.
[0175] Preferably, the base section comprises at least two receiving means, wherein each receiving means is vertically spaced apart and is configured to pivotably receive the support member in the first support position and the second support position, respectively.
[0176] Further preferably, the support member being arranged on the bottom-most receiving means of the base section defines a volume of the bin cavity above the support member that is greater than the volume of the bin cavity defined by the support member being arranged on the top-most receiving means. Having a plurality of receiving means at different heights is advantageous as it enables a user to adjust the volume of the bin cavity easily by just moving the support member from one receiving means on the base section to another receiving means.
[0177] The preferred features of each aspect are equally applicable to each of the other aspects.

Fig. 1 is a side view of the bin 30 with a transparent wall so that the device 1 can be seen. The bin 30 is set on wheels 20 which allow the bin to be moved around more easily by the user.
[0201] The device 1 comprises a delivered item support member in the form of a panel 11 arranged to extend away from the inner wall 31 of the bin 30 into the bin cavity 32 so as to provide an upper delivered item support surface 40. In Fig. 1 a delivered item or parcel 22 is shown on the support surface 40.
[0202] The device 1 has a base section 2 which is attached to the inner wall of the bin 30. The base section 2 lies against the inner wall of the bin 30. The base section 2 is pivotally connected to the panel 11 at their respective lower edges by hinge 12. In this embodiment, a panel support in the form of a stop 14b is attached to the upper edge of the panel 11 and comes into contact with the opposite inner wall of the bin 30, thereby limiting movement of the panel 11.
[0203] In other embodiments, a panel support in the form of, for example, a rope extends from the base section 2 to the panel 11 and limits movement of the panel 11 away from the base section 2. In those embodiments, the movement is limited so that the panel 11 does not touch, and is spaced away from, the opposite inner wall of the bin 30
[0204] The base section 2 has a back plate and two elongate side sections at respective sides of the base section 2.
[0205] At the upper edge of the base section 2 a hook formation 4 is provided by which the device 1 is hung on an upper edge of a wall of the bin 30 so as to attach the device 1 to the inner wall. In this embodiment, a screw 21 is also used to attach the device 1 to the inner wall. The screw passes from outside the bin 30 through its wall and into the base section 2. The hook formation 4 provides a quick and easy way for the device to be attached to the bin 30. The screw 21 attaches the device 1 more securely to the bin 30 and prevent detachment, for example when the bin 30 is turned upside down to be emptied. The device 1 may alternatively or additionally be attached to the bin 30 by adhesive or the like.
[0206] In this embodiment, the hook formation 4 is resilient and grips the wall of the bin 30, but this is not essential.
[0207] A lid 7 is pivotally connected to the base section 2 by lid hinge 9. The lid 7 can also slide along the base section 2 without pivoting with respect to the base section 2. This is possible because each side section of the base section 2 has a slot in which the lid hinge 9 is located. Fig. 1 shows the lid 7 in a stored position once it has slid into the base section 2.
[0208] Referring to Fig. 2, the lid 7 slides upwards, in the direction shown by arrow 8. This movement is allowed by the lid hinge 9 sliding in a groove 5 in the base section 2. Fig. 3 shows the lid 7 then pivoting downwards about lid hinge 9, in the direction shown by arrow 8. The lid 7 engages the panel 11 and forms a closed space enclosing the parcel 22. A device lid fixing formation in the form of a tongue 15 extends from the upper edge of the panel 11 through a hole in the lid 7 and provides a fixing point by which the lid 7 can be locked closed.
[0209] Fig. 4 shows the lid 7 locked by a padlock 24 on the tongue 15. The bin 30 has a bin lid 17 which is pivotally connected to the rest of the bin 30. The bin lid 17 then closes, by moving in the direction shown by arrow 8.
[0210] Fig. 5 shows a front view of the bin 30 with a transparent wall so that the device 1 can be seen.
[0211] Fig. 6 shows the device 1 with the panel 11 in its retracted position once it has pivoted about hinge 12. The panel 11 and base section 2 lie side by side. The panel 11 is hidden in Fig. 6. With the panel 11 in this position, waste can be put into the bin 30 without it being caught in the device 1. It also allows the waste to be emptied when the bin 30 is turned upside down.
[0212] Fig. 7 shows latches 13 which hold the panel 11 in place in its retracted position.
[0213] Fig. 8 shows a wheelie bin delivered item support device 1A according to a second embodiment of the invention. The device 1 A of the second embodiment is similar to the device 1 of the first embodiment, and only differences will be described below.
[0214] In the second embodiment, the device 1A does not have its own lid, and instead its contents are secured by the bin lid 17 being lockable. In this regard, the device 1A has a bin lid fixing formation in the form of a tongue 15 extending out of the bin cavity to provide a fixing point by which the bin lid 17 can be secured in the closed position. The bin lid 17 is provided in its upper surface with a corresponding hole 10 through which tongue 15 can extend when the bin lid 17 is closed.
[0215] In this embodiment, a panel support in the form of a stop 14b is attached to the upper edge of the panel 11 and comes into contact with the opposite inner wall of the bin 30, thereby limiting movement of the panel 11. Referring to Fig. 9, the bin lid 17 closes, by moving in the direction shown by arrow 18, and the tongue 15 passes through hole 10 in the bin lid 17.
[0216] In Fig. 10, a padlock 24 is locked on the tongue 15 via a hole in the tongue 15 to lock the bin lid 17 closed.
[0217] Fig. 11 shows a wheelie bin delivered item support device 1B according to a third embodiment of the invention. The device 1 B of the third embodiment differs from the device of the second embodiment in that the bin is not lockable. In particular, there is no tongue 15 by which the bin lid 17 can be locked closed. Also, no screw 21 is provided.
[0218] Fig. 12 shows a wheelie bin delivered item support device 1C according to a fourth embodiment of the invention. The device 1C of the fourth embodiment differs from the device of the second embodiment in the arrangement of the delivered item support member and the base section 2.
[0219] In the device 1C, the delivered item support member comprises two panels 11, 11b which are pivotally connected to each other at upper hinge 12. In this embodiment, the base section 2 extends further down into the bin cavity than in the other embodiments described above. At the lower edge of base section 2 the panel 11b is pivotally connected by lower hinge 12 to the base section 2. The panel 11b extends from the lower hinge 12 all the way to the upper edge of base section 2. However, the panel 11b has a thicker, lower section and a thinner, upper section. The panel 11 sits alongside the thinner upper section of the panel 11b. Thus, the panel 11b overlaps the panel 11. The panel 11 is pivotally connected by upper hinge 12 to panel 11b at the lower edge of the thinner upper section of panel 11b.
[0220] Referring to Fig. 13, in use, if a smaller package is received (left hand view of Fig. 13), the upper latch 13 is released to allow panel 11 to pivot with respect to panel 11b. This opens a smaller space for the smaller package. On the other hand, if a larger package is received (right hand view of Fig. 13), the upper latch 13 is not released but the lower latch 13 is released to allow panel 11b and panel 11 to pivot with respect to the base section 2. Fig. 14 shows a wheelie bin delivered item support device 1 D according to a fifth embodiment of the invention. The device 1D of the fifth embodiment is similar to the device 1 of the first embodiment, and only differences will be described below.
[0221] The main difference between the device 1 D of the fifth embodiment and the device 1 of the first embodiment is that the device 1 D does not have a lid 7, and nor does the device 1D have the features associated with the lid such as the tongue 15. The base section 2 is also thinner.
[0222] Fig. 15 shows a wheelie bin delivered item support device 1E according to a sixth embodiment of the invention. The device 1 E of the sixth embodiment is similar to the device 1A of the second embodiment, and only differences will be described below.
[0223] The base section 2 is pivotally connected to the panel 11 at their respective lower edges by hinge 12, but the hinge 12 allows the panel 11 to be detached from the base section 2 when the user desires. This reduces the weight of the bin, and allows more space for rubbish, items destined for recycling or the like.
[0224] In Fig. 15, “12” denotes the pin of the hinge, and “6” denotes the knuckle of the hinge. The knuckle 6 is attached to the base section 2 and is open on its upper side. This allows the pin 12 to be lifted out of the knuckle 6 to detach the panel 11 from the base section 2.
[0225] In this embodiment, instead of a screw 21 , a turnbutton fastener 21 is used to attach the device 1 E to the inner wall of the wheelie bin 30. This is described in more detail below with reference to Figs. 19-21.
[0226] Fig. 16 shows a wheelie bin delivered item support device 1 F according to a seventh embodiment of the invention. The device 1F of the seventh embodiment is similar to the device 1A of the second embodiment, and only differences will be described below.
[0227] The device 1F is not attached by screws 21 to the bin 30, but is attached only by hook formation 4. This means the device 1F can be quickly and easily removed from the bin 30 without having to undo screws 21 or other more permanent fixing means. Fig. 17 shows a wheelie bin delivered item support device 1G according to an eighth embodiment of the invention. The device 1G of the seventh embodiment has a very simple structure, with a support member in the form of a flexible sheet 11A and two hook formations 4A at respective upper, opposite edges of the sheet 11 A. In this embodiment, device 1G, in use, is hung by the hook formations 4A on the upper edges of opposing walls of the bin 30.
[0228] Fig. 18 shows a wheelie bin delivered item support device 1 H according to a ninth embodiment of the invention. The device 1H of the ninth embodiment is similar to the device 1G of the eighth embodiment, and only differences will be described below.
[0229] Instead of flexible sheet 11A as a support structure, the device 1H has two rigid panels 11, 11 B connected by a hinge 12.
[0230] The device 1 may be made of range of materials, for example a plastics material or a metal. The support member in particular may be made of a plastics material, for example a rigid plastics material, or a flexible fabric.
[0231] Fig. 19 shows the turnbutton fastener 21 of the sixth embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 15. On the left are rear and side views of the rear component 21 A, and on the right are front and side views of the front component 21 B. The rear component 21 A has a circular disc with a cylindrical upstanding stem extending at a right angle to the disc. The stem has a threaded bore. The front component 21 B has an elongate handle and a threaded upstanding shaft, extending at a right angle to the handle, which is screwable into the threaded bore of the rear component 21A.
[0232] Fig. 20 shows front and side views of the turnbutton fastener 21 of the sixth embodiment of the invention installed in a wheelie bin. In Fig. 20 the bin is shown with a transparent wall so that the turnbutton fastener 21 can be seen. Here, a hole has been formed in the wall of the wheelie bin, and the stem of the rear component 21A has been inserted through the hole from the rear, so that the disc sits against the rear of the wall. Meanwhile, the front component 21 B has been screwed into the protruding stem of the rear component 21 A inside the bin cavity. Fig. 21 shows front views of the turnbutton fastener 21 and a wheelie bin delivered item support device of the sixth embodiment of the invention installed in a wheelie bin. In Fig. 21 the bin and support device are shown with transparent walls so that the turnbutton fastener 21 can be seen. The base section 2 has a slot through which the front component 21 B of the turnbutton fastener 21 can pass when it is aligned with the slot. However, when the front component 21 B has been turned through ninety degrees, it can no longer pass through the slot, and therefore holds the base section 2 against the wall of the bin. When it is desired to detach the support device, the front component 21 B is rotated ninety degrees to align with the slot, thereby releasing the base section 2 from the wall of the bin.
[0233] Referring to Fig. 22, similar to previous embodiments, the device 101 comprises a delivered item support member in the form of a flexible material 111 such as a net or slung fabric arranged to extend away from the inner wall 31 of the bin 30 into the bin cavity 32 so as to provide an upper delivered item support surface 140.
[0234] The device 101 has a first base section 102A which is attached to the inner wall 31 of the wheelie bin. The attachment is via hook formation 104 to hold the first base section 102A in position and / or via winged screw 121 and cap nut 122 to immovably secure the first base section 102A in position. The first base section 102A lies against the inner wall 31 of the bin 30. The support member is fastened to the base section 102A. The device also has a second base section 102B which is attached to the opposite wall 41 similarly to the first base section 102A. The second base section 102B lies against the opposite wall 41 of the bin 30. In an extended configuration, the support member 111, extends from the first base section 102A and towards the second base section 102B. The support member 111 is releasably-fastenable to the second base section 102B via support member receiving means 162. The support member receiving means 162 is also provided on the first base section 102A.
[0235] The support member 111 is provided with releasable-fasteners 160, such as Velcro® along a surface of the support member 111. The releasable-fasteners 160 enable a user to adjust the sag of the support member into the bin cavity 32. In a first positon, the sag is minimal such that the volume of the bin cavity 32 defined by the support member 111 below the support member 111 is maximum to enable the bin 30 to be used to normally accommodate refuse in the bin cavity 32. In a second support position, the sag is maximum such that the volume of the bin cavity 32 defined by the support member 111 below the support member 111 is minimum to enable the support member 111 to hold a large volume of delivered item 22. The user can configure the support member to sag anywhere between the first and second support position using the releasable-fastener 160.
[0236] Referring to Fig 23A and 23B, similar to previous embodiments, the device 201 comprises a delivered item support member in the form of a panel 211 arranged to extend away from the inner wall 31 of the bin 30 into the bin cavity 32 so as to provide an upper delivered item support surface 240. A stop 214 is provided for the support member 211 to rest against the opposite wall.
[0237] The device 201 has a base section 202 which is attached to the inner wall of the wheelie bin. The attachment is via hook formation 204 to hold the first base section 202 in position. The base section 202 comprises two receiving means 251 A and 251 B. The base section 202 may comprise more than two receiving means, for example, three, four, five or six receiving means. When there are more than two receiving means, the receiving means are provided equidistant to one another in a vertical direction along a length of the base section 202.
[0238] The support member 211 comprises pivotable engagement means 250 which is configured to engage with the receiving means 251 A or 251 B. During use, the support member 211 can be arranged on a first receiving means 251 B, which is generally the highest receiving means, in a first support position. In a situation where a larger volume is required to accommodate refuse within the wheelie bin 30, i.e. below the support member 211 , the support member can be moved to a first support position to increase the volume of the bin cavity 32 below the support member. Alternatively, in a situation where a larger volume is required to accommodate larger delivered item, i.e. above the support member 211, the support member can be moved to a second support position to increase the volume of the bin cavity above the support member.
[0239] When being arranged on the second receiving means 251 A, the support member 211 is also provided with a recess 252 to conform to the first receiving means 251 B and ensures support member 211 does not protrude (when in a docked position) and hinder the access to the inside of the bin 30 when the device 201 is not being used. The embodiments of the invention described above have several advantages.
[0240] First - visual security. The device or “box” is more secure since being hidden from casual sight reduces the risk of being identified and broken open by an opportunistic criminal.
[0241] Second - space optimisation. By being expandable and collapsible the box occupies minimum space when not in use holding a parcel or other item.
[0242] Third - material economy and functional security. Integration into the interior of an existing robust structure enables the box to be constructed with less material while making use of the existing structure for both security and protection from hostile weather.
[0243] Fourth - aesthetic neutrality. Being hidden from sight removes the visibility of an unattractive item of crude functionality from the immediate environment of the building being served.
[0244] Fifth - universality. External waste bins made to a prescribed design are a universal item in multiple countries and so provide a simple and ready-made receptacle for the installing of a delivery box.
[0245] Sixth - affordability and convenience. For the consumer the simplicity and economy of box construction reduces the cost of the box while enabling purchases via the internet which both saves money and removes the inconvenience of time consuming alternative collection methods or having to be home for delivery - something that may not be possible for many working individuals.
[0246] Seventh - Delivery Company & Environmental Benefits. Installation of a delivery box allows delivery companies to make their deliveries even if the homeowner is out. This saves both repeat calls and time and money. It also reduces driving times and therefore fuel consumption and pollution and carbon emissions. NB: the term “waste bin” is used as it relates to bins that are commonly external to a property and accessible by a caller to the property. In particular the term includes a category of mobile waste receptacle or large wheeled rubbish containers commonly termed a “wheelie bin” or Mobile Garbage Bin (USA) or similar. Such bins may have a defined design in certain jurisdictions (e.g. in the EU I UK under: BS EN 840-1 :2004 I EN 840-1 :2012; and the USA under ANSI Z245.60 - 2008) or form a generic design widely adopted or adapted elsewhere.
[0247] All such designs (similar in principle and capable of employing the current invention) are to be deemed included in the generic term “waste bin” or “wheelie bin” or other such terms herein employed.
[0248] The device provides a convenient way to receive items delivered to a property when the intended recipient is unable to receive the delivery. The device can be installed within a wheelie bin, which is a very common structure at residential properties. To secure the delivered items, the device may have a lid which is lockable, or the lid of the bin may be lockable. The device may be folded away or collapsed when not in use, or may be removable from the bin, either in part or in whole, to allow the bin to be filled or emptied more easily, for example.
[0249] Preferred embodiments of the invention have been described purely by way of example, and various modifications, additions and / or omissions will present themselves to one skilled in the art, all of which form part of the invention.
