[0011] Throughout this document, values expressed in a range format should be interpreted in a flexible manner to include not only the numerical values explicitly recited as the limits of the range, but also to include all the individual numerical values or sub-ranges encompassed within that range as if each numerical value and sub-range is explicitly recited. For example, a range of “about 0.1% to about 5%” or “about 0.1% to 5%” should be interpreted to include not just about 0.1% to about 5%, but also the individual values (e.g., 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%) and the sub-ranges (e.g., 0.1% to 0.5%, 1.1% to 2.2%, 3.3% to 4.4%) within the indicated range. The statement “about X to Y” has the same meaning as “about X to about Y,” unless indicated otherwise. Likewise, the statement “about X, Y, or about Z” has the same meaning as “about X, about Y, or about Z,” unless indicated otherwise.

[0012] In this document, the terms “a,” “an,” or “the” are used to include one or more than one unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. The term “or” is used to refer to a nonexclusive “or” unless otherwise indicated. The statement “at least one of A and B” or “at least one of A or B” has the same meaning as “A, B, or A and B.” In addition, it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein, and not otherwise defined, is for the purpose of description only and not of limitation. [0014] In the methods described herein, the acts can be carried out in any order without departing from the principles of the invention, except when a temporal or operational sequence is explicitly recited. Furthermore, specified acts can be carried out concurrently unless explicit claim language recites that they be carried out separately. For example, a claimed act of doing X and a claimed act of doing Y can be conducted simultaneously within a single operation, and the resulting process will fall within the literal scope of the claimed process.

[0015] The term “about” as used herein can allow for a degree of variability in a value or range, for example, within 10%, within 5%, or within 1% of a stated value or of a stated limit of a range, and includes the exact stated value or range.

[0016] The term “substantially” as used herein refers to a majority of, or mostly, as in at least about 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 95%, 96%, 97%, 98%, 99%, 99.5%, 99.9%, 99.99%, or at least about 99.999% or more, or 100%. The term “substantially free of” as used herein can mean having none or having a trivial amount of, such that the amount of material present does not affect the material properties of the composition including the material, such that about 0 wt% to about 5 wt% of the composition is the material, or about 0 wt% to about 1 wt%, or about 5 wt% or less, or less than or equal to about 4.5 wt%, 4, 3.5, 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1 , 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1, 0.01, or about 0.001 wt% or less, or about 0 wt%.

[0017] Various aspects according to the present invention relate to a cosmetic application device. An example of a suitable cosmetic application device is shown in FIGS 1A-1C, which are perspective views of device 100. FIGS. 1A-1C show many of the same components and are discussed concurrently. Cosmetic application device 100 includes cosmetic composition container 102 and cosmetic applicator 104. Cosmetic composition container 102 is cosmetic applicator 104 are removably attached to each other.

[0018] The removable attachment is facilitated at least in two ways. First, as shown a portion of cosmetic applicator 104 is disposed within cosmetic composition container 102. More specifically, brush portion 106 of cosmetic applicator 104 is disposed in cosmetic composition container 102. Second, threaded connection 108 is used to attach cosmetic composition container102 and cosmetic applicator 104. Although threaded connection 108 is shown, it is possible to use other connection devices.

[0019] Cosmetic applicator 104 is defined between first end 110 and second end 112. Brush portion 106 defines first end 110. Brush portion 106 includes a brush such as a mascara brush. As non-limiting examples, suitable mascara brushes can include ball brushes (used for precision applications), curved brushes (used for imparting curl), hourglass brushes (used to increase volume), tapered or cone brushes (used to increase length), rectangular brushes, skinny brushes (used for increasing definition), fluffy brushes (used for thickening), comb brushes (used for separation). While a brush is depicted it is possible to include other application devices as opposed to a mascara brush.

[0020] Handle portion 105 defines second end 112. Handle portion 105 is adapted to be held by a user’s hand. To aid in grip, handle potion 105 can include a haptic feature. For example, handle portion 105 can include a bump, a groove, a depression, a soft material, or a combination thereof. Haptic features can help a user to maintain a solid grip on device 100.

[0021] Cosmetic applicator 104 includes joint 114. As shown, joint 114 is located about at a midpoint of cosmetic applicator 104. In other examples, it is possible for joint 114 to be located at a different point along cosmetic applicator. Joint 114 is shown as a hinge. Joint can allow for handle portion 105 and brush portion 106 to be articulated with respect to each other. For example, as shown in FIG. 2, an angle between handle portion 105 and brush portion 106 can be up to about 140 degrees relative to each other, up to about 135 degrees relative to each other, in a range of from about 50 degrees to about 160 degrees relative to each other, in a range of from about 60 degrees to about 135 degrees relative to each other. In some examples, joint 114 can be further configured so that handle portion 105 and brush portion 106 are adapted to rotate axially up to 360 degrees relative to each other.

[0022] Joint 114 provides many benefits to device 100. For example joint 114 can allow handle portion 105 be folded over such that it is parallel to a longitudinal direction of cosmetic composition container 102, this orientation is shown in FIG. 1A. In this orientation, the overall height of device 100 can be about 25% to about 75% less than a corresponding device that does not include joint 114. This reduces the overall profile of device 100 as compared to a conventional device. Thus, device 100 can occupy less shelf space than conventional devices.

[0023] As an additional benefit, the ability to articulate handle portion 105 allows a user to find a position that allows them to feel comfortable and in control of device 100 during use. A conventional device that does not have joint 114 requires a user to manipulate their arm, hands, and / or fingers to a larger degree to control the device. Additionally, the effective distance between the user’s hand and the tip of brush portion 106 is not large and therefore, a user may have improved control of device 100 relative to a user handling a conventional device without joint 114. In such a conventional device the user’s hand is likely to be at a greater distance from the brush tip than in device 100. Thus, a user of a conventional device may have less precision and control in applying a cosmetic composition.

[0024] Cosmetic composition container 102 can include a cosmetic composition such as a mascara, a concealer, eye treatment composition, lip treatment composition, or a lip gloss. Mascara compositions can include an emulsifier to aid in mixing of the water phase and the oil phase. The mascara composition can include one or more thickeners or gellants in the water / oil phase. The thickeners or gellants can aid in the viscosity and tack of the mascara composition. The thickeners or gellants can include, for example, clay, gum, or cetyl alcohol. The mascara composition can include one or more film formers in the water / oil phase. The film formers can aid in the formation of a flexible and non-flaking film, and help prevent smudging while increasing wear of the mascara formulation. The film formers can include, for example, polymers or silicones. A variety of story ingredients can be included in the mascara composition, including but not limited to conditioning agents, fibers, butter, functional ingredients, fragrance, and others. The mascara composition can include one or more conditioning agents. The mascara composition can include one or more fibers. The mascara composition can include one or more butters. The mascara composition can include one or more functional ingredients. The mascara composition can include one or more fragrances, such as The mascara composition can include one or more pigments. The pigments, such as black, brown, or dark blue pigments, can be used for coloration. In some cases, pearls or flitters can be used. The mascara composition can include one or more waxes water / oil phase. The waxes can help provide for removal of the mascara composition.

[0025] Handle portion 105 can include a hollow interior. The hollow interior can be utilized by placing accessory 116 therein, as shown in FIG. 3. Accessory 116 can be actuated between a first position in which it is fully located within handle portion 105 and a secondposition in which it is located at least partially outside of handle portion 105. In some examples, accessory 116 can be interchangeable. That is accessory 116 can be a first accessory and it can be exchanged with a second accessory that is different than the first accessory. Accessory 116 can be secured to handle portion 105 by a threaded connection or the like. Accessory 116 can be a comb or an eyeliner pencil.

[0026] FIGS. 4A-4C are perspective views of cosmetic application device 200. FIGS. 4A-4C include many of the same components and are discussed concurrently. As shown, device 200 includes first and second cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ as well as first and second cosmetic applicators 204 and 204’ . Cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ and cosmetic applicators 204 and 204’ are removably attached to each other, respectively.

[0027] The removable attachment is facilitated at least in two ways. First, as shown a portion of cosmetic applicators 204 and 204’ are disposed within cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’. More specifically, brush portions 206 and 206’ of cosmetic applicators 204 and 204’ are disposed in cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’, respectively.Second, threaded connections 208 and 208’ are used to attach cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ and cosmetic applicators 204 and 204’ . Although threaded connections 208 and 208’ are shown it is possible to use other connection devices.

[0028] Cosmetic applicators 204 and 204’ are each defined between respective first ends 210 and 210’ and second ends 212 and 212’. Brush portions 206 and 206’ define first ends 210 and 210’. Brush portions 206 and 206’ include a brush such as a mascara brush. While a brush is depicted, it is possible to include other application devices as opposed to a mascara brush. Brush portions 206 and 206’ can be the same brush or different brushes.

[0029] Cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ are adapted to be held by a user’s hand. To aid in grip, cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ can include a haptic feature. For example, cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ can include a bump, a groove, a depression, a soft material, or a combination thereof. Haptic features can help a user to maintain a solid grip on device 200.

[0030] Device 200 includes joint 214. As shown, joint 214 is located about at a midpoint of device 200 between cosmetic applicators 204 and 204’. Joint 214 is shown as a hinge. Joint can allow for cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ to be articulated with respect to each other. For example, as shown in FIGS. 4A-4C (and by analogy to FIG. 2), an angle between cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ can be up to about 140 degrees relative to each other, up to about 135 degrees relative to each other, in a range of from about 50 degrees to about 160 degrees relative to each other, in a range of from about 60 degrees to about 135 degrees relative to each other. In some examples, joint 214 can be further configured so that cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ are adapted to rotate axially up to 360 degrees relative to each other.

[0031] Joint 214 provides many benefits to device 200. For example, joint 214 can allow cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ to be folded over such that they are parallel to each other along their longitudinal directions, this orientation is shown in FIG. 4A. In this orientation, the overall height of device 200 can be about 25% to about 75% less than a corresponding device that does not include joint 114. This reduces the overall profile of device 200 as compared to a conventional device. Thus device 200 can occupy less shelf space than conventional devices.

[0032] As an additional benefit, the ability to articulate cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ allows a user to find a position that allows them to feel comfortable and in control of device 200 during use by using either of cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ as a handle. A conventional device that does not have joint 114 requires a user to manipulate their arm, hands, and / or fingers to a larger degree to control the device. Additionally, the effective distance between the user’s hand and the tip of brush portions 206 and 206’ are not large and therefore, a user may have improved control of device 200 relative to a user handling a conventional device without joint 214. In such a conventional device the user’s hand is likely to be at a greater distance from the brush tip than in device 200. Thus, a user of a conventional device may have less precision and control in applying a cosmetic composition.

[0033] In some examples, cosmetic composition containers 202 and 202’ can include the same cosmetic composition or different cosmetic compositions. Suitable examples of cosmetic compositions include such as a mascara, a concealer, eye treatment composition, lip treatment composition, or a lip gloss.

[0034] FIGS. 5 A-5C are perspective views of cosmetic application device 300. FIGS. 5A-5C include many of the same components and arc discussed concurrently. As shown, device 300 includes first and second cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302’ ’ as well as first and second cosmetic applicators 304, 304’ and 304”. Cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302’ ’ and cosmetic applicators 304, 304’ and 304’ ’ are removably attached to each other, respectively.

[0035] The removable attachment is facilitated at least in two ways. First, as shown a portion of cosmetic applicators 304, 304’ and 304” are disposed within cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302”. More specifically, brush portions 306, 306’ and 306” of cosmetic applicators 304, 304’ and 304’ ’ are disposed in cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302”, respectively. Second, threaded connections 308, 308’ and 308” are used to attach cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302” and cosmetic applicators 304, 304’ and 304”. Although threaded connections 308, 308’ and 308” are shown it is possible to use other connection devices.

[0036] Cosmetic applicators 304, 304’ and 304’ ’ are each defined between respective first ends 310, 310’ and 310” and second ends 312, 312’ and 312”. Brush portions 306, 306’ and 306” define first ends 310, 310’ and 310”. Brush portions 306, 306’ and 306” include a brush such as a mascara brush. Brush portions 306, 306’ and 306’ ’ can be the same brush or different brushes.

[0037] Cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302” are adapted to be held by a user’s hand. To aid in grip, cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302” can include a haptic feature. For example, cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302’ ’ can include a bump, a groove, a depression, a soft material, or a combination thereof. Haptic features can help a user to maintain a solid grip on device 300.

[0038] Device 300 includes joint 314, 314’ and 314”. As shown, joint 314, 314’ and 314” is located about at a midpoint of device 300 between cosmetic applicators 304, 304’ and304”. Joint 314, 314’ and 314” is shown as a hinge. Joint can allow for cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302’ ’ to be articulated with respect to each other. For example, as shown in FIGS. 5A-5C (and by analogy to FIG. 2 and FIGS. 4A-4C), an angle between cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302” can be up to about 140 degrees relative to each other, up to about 135 degrees relative to each other, in a range of from about 50 degrees to about 160 degrees relative to each other, in a range of from about 60 degrees to about 135 degrees relative to each other. In some examples, joint 314, 314’ and 314” can be further configured so that cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302’ ’ are adapted to rotate axially up to 360 degrees relative to each other.

[0039] Joint 314, 314’ and 314” provides many benefits to device 300. For example, joint 314, 314’ and 314” can allow cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302” to be folded over such that they are parallel to each other along their longitudinal directions, this orientation is shown in FIG. 5A. In this orientation, the overall height of device 300 can be about 25% to about 75% less than a corresponding device that does not include joint 314, 314’ and 314”. This reduces the overall profile of device 300 as compared to a conventional device. Thus device 300 can occupy less shelf space than conventional devices.

[0040] As an additional benefit, the ability to articulate cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302’ ’ allows a user to find a position that allows them to feel comfortable and in control of device 300 during use by using either of cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302” as a handle. A conventional device that does not have joint 314, 314’ and 314” requires a user to manipulate their arm, hands, and / or fingers to a larger degree to control the device. Additionally, the effective distance between the user’s hand and the tip of brush portions 306, 306’ and 306” are not large and therefore, a user may have improved control of device 300 relative to a user handling a conventional device without joint 314, 314’ and 314”. In such a conventional device the user’ s hand is likely to be at a greater distance from the brush tip than in device 300. Thus, a user of a conventional device may have less precision and control in applying a cosmetic composition.

[0041] In some examples, cosmetic composition containers 302, 302’ and 302’ ’ can include the same cosmetic composition or different cosmetic compositions. Suitable examples of cosmetic compositions include such as a mascara, a concealer, eye treatment composition, liptreatment composition, or a lip gloss. The variety of possible cosmetic compositions can allow for device 300 to essentially be a portable cosmetic kit.

[0042] With reference to mascara compositions, they may act as a paste or semi-solid on the brush, rather than as a flowable liquid. Thus, the primary method of depositing such mascaras onto the mascara brush is by inserting the brush into a supply of mascara, typically contained cosmetic containers such as cosmetic containers 102, 202, 202,’ 302, 302’, or 302”, so that the mascara is deposited on the head (i.e., bristles and core) of the brush. Excess mascara is removed from the head of the brush, especially the outermost portions of the bristles spaced away from the core, via a wiper when the brush is withdrawn from cosmetic containers 102, 202, 202,’ 302, 302’, or 302”. Ideally, a suitable amount of mascara remains at least on the core of the brush for application to the eyelashes of a user. A user articulates cosmetic containers 102, 202, 202,’ 302, 302’, or 302” relative to applicator 104, 204, 204,’ 304, 304’, or 304” to a comfortable position. When the brush is used as intended, the lashes of a user are moved past the bristles of the brush via the spaces between the bristles such that the lashes come into contact with the mascara-containing core and, optionally, portions of the bristles (e.g., the inner portions). Thus, it is the characteristics of the mascara (e.g., coherent strength & rigidity) in combination with the applicator and wiper that provides the primary mechanism of product control and dosing. Because conventional mascaras tend to be thick enough for the mascara to remain on the core of the brush, it is not uncommon for the spacing of the bristles to be determined primarily by the desired lash separation / clustering. But with the desire to provide lower viscosity mascaras, the spacing of the bristles becomes important for providing suitable product retention on the brush as well as the desired amount of lash separation / clustering.Exemplary Aspects.
