Abstract
Description
[0001] SELF-RISING COASTAL WALL AGAINST FLOOD WAVES CAUSED BY SUDDEN INCREASE IN RIVER AND SEA LEVELS
[0002] Technical field of the invention
[0003] This invention is in the technical field of coastal structures in civil engineering. It is a barrier system that was developed to protect all kinds of settlements in coastal areas with variable water levels such as seas or rivers against sudden rising water levels and that closes itself as the water level rises by means of the floating air chamber. As a sector, it is in the sectors of sub-fields of coastal structures in the construction sector and covers in the machinery sector.
[0004] The State of the Art
[0005] Before this invention, fixed barriers were used on the river or sea shore. However, fixed barriers both aesthetically obstructed the view of the sea and prevented people from interacting with the water.
[0006] Although rare, in some cases, there are vertical cover systems that rise vertically as the water level rises. However, in these systems, friction forces occur due to horizontal water and wave thrust, and this negative situation makes it difficult to close the cover and sometimes prevents it.
[0007] In this barrier system, which rises by itself by means of the air chamber as the water level rises without the need for any energy, external power or personnel, the cover barrier will rise as the water level increases and flood waters will be prevented from flooding the land. With the decrease in the water level, the barriers will lower again and become invisible in the sight between the sea or water and people.
[0008] The prior art barriers are usually fixed. Although there are rarely electric motor-driven rising barrier systems, these systems definitely require an external power source. Fixed type barriers in the literature are generally installed by human hands, installed by officials when the probability of flooding increases, and removed by personnel when the water level drops and the risk of flooding disappears. Fixed barriers prevent both the view and human water / sea interaction, while power cuts prevent the operation of electric motor driven systems. In systems installed and removed by human hands, a constant manpower is required, and personnel are insufficient in cases of widespread flooding problems or in cases where early warning cannot be made.
[0009] Although it is not widely used yet, in vertical cover systems, such as buoys that rise on their own as the water level increases, friction forces increase due to horizontal water thrust and the cover cannot be closed by friction.
[0010] There is the application NL1035546C2 in the state of the art. Said invention relates to a self-closing flood barrier to protect a hinterland against floods, wherein the flood barrier comprises a chamber including a first side wall and a second side wall, a water inlet for water intake, a single support block arranged on the first side wall and a dam wall element arranged up and down in the chamber. The dam wall element comprises a retaining wall to prevent water from flowing into the hinterland, a forcing element to cause upward movement of the dam wall element and a blocking element to provide a blockage to limit the upward movement. The blocking element comprises an inclined surface. The support block comprises an inclined surface on which the inclined surface of the blocking element acts in the closed state of the flood barrier. Due to the orientation of the angled wall of the support block, the blocking element is forced to move sideways, thereby creating a lateral force that forces the dam wall element towards one side of the reservoir.
[0011] The aim of the invention
[0012] With this invention, the barrier remains at the same level as the ground during nonflood times and does not spoil the coastal view, and allows people on the coast to interact with the coast.
[0013] With this invention, no electric motor is needed to close the barriers.
[0014] With this invention, no personnel is needed to close the barriers.
[0015] In the cover barrier system proposed with this invention, the barriers are closed on their own using the buoyancy of the rising water with air chambers. With this invention, the closing speed of the barriers and the required buoyancy are increased by using the momentum energy and buoyancy of the sea waves with the special geometry of the air chamber.
[0016] With this invention, the friction problem in the covers that rise vertically as the water level increases has been eliminated. Since the proposed system works with joints, both the rising water level and the wave effect help the cover to close without friction.
[0017] In addition, the geometry of the air chambers mounted on the barrier helps the cover to close easily by using the buoyancy of the water in a positive direction.
[0018] The energy or personnel required to close the cover has been eliminated. The cover closes on its own without requiring any external command. As the water level rises, it partially closes and does not block the view. Since the barrier cover closes automatically during flooding, it is always usable.
[0019] Description of the Drawings
[0020] FIGURE -1 is the drawing showing the perspective view of the invention.
[0021] FIGURE -2 is the drawing showing the (cover open) side view of the invention at low water level.
[0022] FIGURE -3 is the drawing showing the (cover partially closed) side view of the invention at rising water level.
[0023] FIGURE -4 is the drawing showing the (cover closed) side view of the invention at high water level.
[0024] Reference numbers
[0025] (a) coastal edge
[0026] (b) coastal wall
[0027] (c) cover
[0028] (d) floating air chamber (e) lockable hinge
[0029] (f) water level
[0030] Description of the Invention
[0031] By means of the floating air chambers (d) which are mounted on the hinged barrier cover and the geometry of which is special to this invention, the hinged cover (c) can float on water. Since it has a lockable hinge (e), the friction surface is almost nonexistent compared to vertical covers. Since the floating air chamber (d) always remains above the water level, the cover (c) to which the floating air chamber (d) is connected will close on its own as the water level increases. The geometry of the floating air chamber (d) will help it use the vertical hydrostatic pressure of the water to lift the cover (c). Therefore, the cover (c) will be able to close on its own without difficulty.
[0032] It can also be used to protect seaside settlements, industrial zones, agricultural areas, energy facilities, historical monuments, etc., many places that may be adversely affected by flooding.
[0033] In addition to being a lockable jointed connection, the geometries of the floating air chambers (d) are unique details that enable the cover to close on its own. By means of this geometry, the floating air chamber (d) uses the horizontal and vertical hydrostatic pressure of the water to close the cover.
[0034] The invention will solve the problems of flooding and inundation that occur in coastal areas of water masses with variable sea or water levels (f). For this reason, local governments and water administrations may prefer to apply this invention to protect settlements located on the coastal edge (a). Similarly, it is evaluated as having high commercial potential since it will help protect many different purposed settlements such as industrial, military, energy, etc. located on the coastal edge (a) from floods.
[0035] As seen in Figure 1 , said barrier is positioned at the junction point of the coastal wall
[0036] (b) and the coastal edge (a). The barrier consists of a cover (c), a lockable hinge (e), and a floating air chamber (d). There is a floating air chamber (d) fixed to the cover
[0037] (c) with a lockable hinge (e). In case the floating air chamber (d) rises with the water level (f), the floating air chamber pushes the cover and allows the cover (c) to open and act as a barrier. In this way, when the water level rises, the cover (c) which acts as a barrier automatically opens. When the water level drops, the floating air chamber (d) also descends to sea level with the water, and the cover (c) closes.
