Description

COATING COMPOSITION AND COATED ARTICLETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present application relates to a coating composition and a coated article, and more particularly to a coating composition containing a polyaspartic acid ester and a coated article.BACKGROUND

[0002] With the increasing awareness of environmental protection and stricter regulations on volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, solvent-based coating compositions are typically required to have low VOC content. Water-based coatings typically have a relatively low VOC content, but require high-temperature baking and curing, and have a slow drying speed.

[0003] Moreover, water-based coatings with low VOC content do not perform satisfactorily when texturing effects are desired. As a result, traditional liquid coatings cannot provide textured paints that can simultaneously meet the requirements of low VOC and fast drying at room temperature.

[0004] Therefore, there is a need for textured paints that have both low VOC and fast drying at room temperature in the coating industry.SUMMARY

[0005] The inventors have found that the above objective can be achieved by using the coating composition as described herein. The coating compositions described herein are capable of providing a textured paint having both low VOC and fast drying at room temperature.

[0006] A first aspect of the present application provides a coating composition, comprising: at least one polyaspartic acid ester (or polyaspartate) , and a surface-modified filler having an oil absorption of 20 g / 100 g or less, wherein the coating composition has a viscosity at 25℃ of not greater than 17000 cps.

[0007] A second aspect of the present application provides a coated article, comprising: a substrate having at least one surface; and a coating composition or a cured coating thereof directly or indirectly applied on the at least one surface of at least a portion of the substrate, wherein the coating composition is the coating composition as described in the first aspect of the present application.

[0008] The inventors of the present application have surprisingly found that the coating compositions as described herein can provide good texturing effects. In particular, in the coating compositions described herein, by combining a polyaspartic acid ester having an extremely high solid content (up to about 95 wt. %, or even close to 100 wt. %) and low viscosity with a surface-modified filler having an oil absorption of 20 g / 100 g or less, and controlling the viscosity of the coating composition, the coating composition can have low VOC emissions and fast drying at room temperature while providing an excellent texturing effect.

[0009] Moreover, the inventors have also found that it is common in the art to obtain texturing effects by adding texture additives (e.g. in acrylic resins) , however, such texture additives are not widely applicable to all coating compositions and the obtained texturing effects are not stable. The inventors have surprisingly found that the coating compositions as described herein can provide good texturing effects, even in the absence of a texture additive. Indeed, the inventors have found that in some of the coating compositions described herein, the addition of texture additives does not significantly increase the texturing effect like it does in acrylic resin systems.

[0010] In addition, the coating composition of the present application further has good workability and economic benefits.

[0011] Details of one or more embodiments of the present application are set forth in the following description. Other features, objects, and advantages of the present application will become apparent from the description and claims.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0018] DEFINITION

[0019] As used herein, "a" , "an" , "the" , "at least one" and "one or more" are used interchangeably unless otherwise stated. Thus, for example, a component that comprises "an” additive can be interpreted to mean that the component includes "one or more" additives. As used herein, the singular forms are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.

[0020] Unless otherwise expressly stated, the terms “comprises” , “having” , “including” , "containing" , “incorporating” , and variations thereof should generally be construed to be open-ended and non-limiting. For example, where a composition is described as comprising, including, containing, or having certain components, it is intended that the composition may include other optional components than the recited components expressly listed, and that the composition may consist of or be composed of the recited components; when a method is described as comprising, including, containing, or having certain steps, it is intended that the method may include other optional steps than the recited steps expressly listed, and that the method may consist of or be composed of the recited steps.

[0021] For the sake of brevity, only some numerical ranges are explicitly disclosed herein. However, any lower limit may be combined with any upper limit to form a range that is not explicitly described; and any lower limit may be combined with other lower limit to form an unspecified range; and any upper limit may be combined with any other upper limit to form an unspecified range. Further, although not explicitly specified, each point or single value between the endpoints of a range is included in the range. Thus, each point or single value can be combined with any other point or single value or combined with other lower or upper limits to form a range that is not explicitly specified.

[0022] Unless otherwise indicated, each point and single values between endpoints of a range are included in the range. For example, a range from 1 to 5 includes 1, 1.5, 2, 2.75, 3, 3.80, 4, 5, and so on. Further, disclosure of a numerical range includes disclosure of all subranges included within the broader range. For example, a range of from 1 to 5 discloses the subranges of from 1 to 4, from 1.5 to 4.5, from 1 to 2, and so on. Thus, every point or individual value may serve as a lower or upper limit and be combined with any other point or individual value or any other lower or upper limit, and the resulting ranges should be regarded as the contents that are explicitly disclosed in present application.

[0023] As used herein, the term “or” is inclusive. That is, the phrase "A or B" means "A, B, or both A and B. " More specifically, any of the following conditions satisfy the condition "A or B" : A is true (or exists) and B is false (or does not exist) ; A is false (or does not exist) and B is true (or exists) ; or both A and B are true (or exist) . In contrast, the exclusive "or" is expressed herein by the terms such as "either A or B" and "one of A or B. "

[0024] In this context, “coating” or “coating film” has the same meaning as "paint film" and is formed after applying and curing a coating composition.

[0025] When used in the context of "a coating applied on a surface or substrate, " the term "on" includes coatings that are applied directly or indirectly on the surface or substrate. Thus, for example, a coating applied on a primer coating on a substrate is regarded as a coating applied on the substrate.

[0026] The term "substantially free of" a compound means that the coating composition comprises less than 1000 parts per million (ppm) of the compound; The term "essentially free of" a compound means that the coating composition comprises less than 100 ppm of the compound; The term "essentially completely free of" a compound means that the coating composition comprises less than 5 ppm of the compound; The term "completely free of" a compound means that the coating composition comprises less than 20 parts per billion (ppb) of the compound.

[0027] In the context of the present application, the term "two-component coating composition" refers to a coating composition consisting of two or more separately stored components, wherein these components are mixed together when used, and can be dried and cured over an acceptable period of time to form a coating having desired mechanical properties (such as hardness) .

[0028] The term "amine equivalent weight" when used with respect to "polyaspartic acid ester" refers to the mass of polyaspartic acid ester containing one equivalent weight of secondary amino groups. Generally, the lower the amine equivalent weight, the more secondary amino groups contained in the polyaspartic acid ester, and the stronger the reactivity.

[0029] The terms “preferred” , “preferably” , and any other variation thereof are used to refer to some of embodiments of the present application that may provide certain advantages under certain circumstances. However, under the same or other circumstances, other embodiments may also be preferred. Additionally, the description of one or more preferred embodiments in no way indicates that other embodiments should be unusable, and it should not be intended to exclude other embodiments from the scope of the invention.

[0030] Coating composition

[0031] The first aspect of the present application provides a coating composition, comprising: at least one polyaspartic acid ester (or polyaspartate) , and a surface-modified filler having an oil absorption of 20 g / 100 g or less, wherein the coating composition has a viscosity at 25℃ of not greater than 17000 cps. The coating composition is capable of providing a textured paint having both low VOC and fast drying at room temperature. In particular, the coating composition may provide a baking-free textured paint.

[0032] By combining a high solid content and low viscosity polyaspartic resin with a filler having low oil absorption and controlling the viscosity of the coating composition, the coating composition can provide a paint with low VOC emissions, fast drying at room temperature, and meanwhile excellent texturing effect.

[0033] In some embodiments, the viscosity at 25℃ of the coating composition is not greater than 17000 cps, and is preferably from 8000 cps to 16000 cps and more preferably from 9000 cps to 15000 cps. For example, the coating composition has a viscosity at 25℃ of 8000 cps, 8500 cps, 9000 cps, 9500 cps, 10000 cps, 10500 cps, 11000 cps, 11500 cps, 12000 cps, 12500 cps, 13000 cps, 13500 cps, 14000 cps, 14500 cps, 15000 cps, 16000 cps or 17000 cps, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0034] Preferably, the coating composition described herein are capable of having a relatively great viscosity while meeting the construction requirements. This relatively great viscosity is beneficial to the formation of stereoscopic texture. Without wishing to be bound by theory, during application / construction of the coating composition described herein, shear force during air spraying (compressed air) or airless spraying can reduce the viscosity of the system; With the disappearance of shear force, the viscosity of the system increases rapidly in a short time, thus achieving a very excellent texturing effect.

[0035] The coating composition according to the present application comprises a polyaspartic acid ester as a resin component or a part thereof or as an additive. Polyaspartic acid esters are known to those skilled in the art of coatings, and are polyamines having at least one secondary amino group, for example two secondary amino groups. In some embodiments, at least one polyaspartic acid ester has at least two secondary amino groups. The polyaspartic acid esters are particularly suitable for formulating solvent-based coating compositions with low VOC content due to their extremely high solid content and low viscosity.

[0036] In the coating composition described herein, the polyaspartic acid ester has a low number average molecular weight, and has an appropriate NH equivalent weight, and has excellent reactivity. More importantly, the inventors have found that the texturing effect can be further improved by selecting a suitable viscosity in a coating composition comprising a high solid content and low viscosity polyaspartic acid ester and a filler having a low oil absorption.

[0037] In some embodiments, the number average molecular weight of the polyaspartic acid ester may be in the range of between 300 g / mol and 1200 g / mol, preferably between 350 g / mol and 1000 g / mol, even more preferably between 400 g / mol and 800 g / mol. For example, the number average molecular weight of the polyaspartic acid ester may be 300 g / mol, 350 g / mol, 400 g / mol, 450 g / mol, 500 g / mol, 550 g / mol, 600 g / mol, 650 g / mol, 700 g / mol, 750 g / mol, 800 g / mol, 900 g / mol, 1000 g / mol, 1100 g / mol or 1200 g / mol, or in a range composed of any of the above values. The number average molecular weight can be determined by using methods and equipment known in the art. For example, the molecular weight can be determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) according to ISO 13885-1: 2008. If the molecular weight of the polyaspartic acid ester is too high, the viscosity of the molecule will surge, which is not conducive to formulating low VOC coating compositions; If the molecular weight is too low, the strength of the paint film will be established too slowly, which is not conducive to the fast drying of the coating.

[0038] In some embodiments, the viscosity of the polyaspartic acid ester may be from 300 cps to 3000 cps, preferably from 500 cps to 2800 cps, more preferably from 700 cps to 2500 cps, even more preferably from 900 cps to 2000 cps. For example, the viscosity of the polyaspartic acid ester may be 300 cps, 400 cps, 500 cps, 600 cps, 700 cps, 800 cps, 900 cps, 1000 cps, 1100 cps, 1200 cps, 1300 cps, 1400 cps, 1500 cps, 1600 cps, 1700 cps, 1800 cps, 1900 cps, 2000 cps, 2100 cps, 2200 cps, 2500 cps, 2800 cps or 3000 cps, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0039] In some embodiments, the amine equivalent weight of the polyaspartic acid ester may be between about 150 g / eq and 450 g / eq, preferably between 200 g / eq and 400 g / eq, and more preferably between 250 g / eq and 350 g / eq. For example, the amine equivalent weight of the polyaspartic acid ester may be about 150 g / eq, 180 g / eq, 200 g / eq, 220 g / eq, 250 g / eq, 270 g / eq, 300 g / eq, 320 g / eq, 350 g / eq, 380 g / eq, 400 g / eq, 420 g / eq, or 450 g / eq, or within a range composed of any of the above values. The amine equivalent weight is calculated from the amine value according to the formula: amine equivalent weight = 56.1 × 1000 /  [amine value] , wherein the amine value may be determined according to ASTM D2074. The amine equivalent weight of the polyaspartic acid ester is a parameter that measures the reactivity of the resin molecule. Similar to epoxy equivalent (weight) , the term "amine equivalent” (weight) refers to the mass of polyaspartic acid ester containing one equivalent weight of secondary amino groups. Generally, the lower the amine equivalent weight, the more secondary amino groups contained in the polyaspartic acid ester, and the stronger the reactivity.

[0040] As an exemplary illustration, the polyaspartic acid ester may have a structure represented by the following general formula (I) :

[0041] wherein X represents an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic group that is inert to isocyanate groups at a temperatures of 100℃ or less; R1 and R2 each independently is selected from an organic group that is inert to isocyanate groups at temperatures of 100℃ or less; R3 and R4 each independently is selected from hydrogen and an organic group that is inert to isocyanate groups at a temperature of 100℃ or less; and N is an integer from 2 to 6.

[0042] In some embodiments, X is an n-valent organic group optionally containing one or more heteroatoms, which may be obtained by removing a primary amino group from a polyamine having a (cyclo) aliphatically or araliphatically bonded primary amino group, and may contain other functional groups that are reactive to isocyanate groups and / or inert at temperatures of 100℃or less. Preferably, the polyamine may have the structure of For example, examples of the polyamine include the following compounds: ethylenediamine, 1, 2-diaminopropane, 1, 4-diaminobutane, 1, 5-diaminopentane, 2, 5-diamino-2, 5-dimethylhexane, 1, 5-diamino-2-methylpentane ( A, from DuPont) , 1, 6-diaminohexane, 2, 2, 4-and / or 2, 4, 4-trimethyl-1, 6-diaminohexane, 1, 11-diaminoundecane, 1, 12-diaminododecane, triaminononane, 1-amino-3, 5-trimethyl-5-aminomethyl-cyclohexane, 4, 4'-diamino-dicyclohexylmethane, 3, 3-dimethyl-4, 4'-diamino-dicyclohexylmethane, 4, 9-dioxadodecane-1, 12-diamine and 4, 7, 10-trioxatridecane-1, 13-diamine. Aliphatic polycyclic polyamines are also useful, such as tricyclodecane bismethylamine (TCD diamine) or bis (aminomethyl) norbornane.

[0043] For example, X may be an alicyclic group containing 6 to 20 carbon atoms. Preferably, X represents a divalent hydrocarbon group obtained by removing an amino group from: 1, 4-diaminobutane, 1, 6-diaminohexane, 2, 2, 4-and 2, 4, 4-trimethyl-1, 6-diaminohexane, 1-amino-3,3, 5-trimethyl-5-aminomethyl-cyclohexane, 4, 4'-diamino-dicyclohexylmethane or 3, 3-dimethyl-4,4'-diamino-dicyclohexylmethane.

[0044] In some embodiments, n may be 2, 3 or 4.

[0045] For example, n may be 2. The polyaspartic acid ester may have a structure represented by the following general Formula (II) or (III) :

[0046] Preferably, R1 and R2 represent C1-C18 alkyl, more preferably C1-C8 alkyl, and even more preferably C1-C6 alkyl. For example, R1 and R2 each independently represents methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl or isobutyl. Very particularly preferably, R1 and R2 each independently represents methyl or ethyl.

[0052] In some embodiments, based on total weight of the coating composition, the at least one polyaspartic acid ester may be present in an amount of from 15 wt. %to 35 wt. %, preferably from 20 wt. %to 30 wt. %. For example, based on total weight of the coating composition, the at least one polyaspartic acid ester may be present in an amount of 15 wt. %, 18 wt. %, 20 wt. %, 22 wt. %, 25 wt. %, 28 wt. %, or 30 wt. %, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0053] In some embodiments, the coating composition may comprise two or more polyaspartic acid esters. For example, the coating composition may comprise two or three polyaspartic acid esters. In some exemplary embodiments, the coating composition may comprise two polyaspartic acid esters, and the weight ratio of the two polyaspartic acid esters may be from 1: 10 to 10: 1. Preferably, the weight ratio of the two polyaspartic acid esters may be from 1: 8 to 8: 1, more preferably from 1: 5 to 5: 1.

[0054] In the coating composition described herein, the surface-modified filler has a very low oil absorption. Preferably, the oil absorption of the surface-modified filler is 18 g / 100 g or less, more preferably 16 g / 100 g or less, and even more preferably 14 g / 100 g or less. For example, the oil absorption of the surface-modified filler may be about 20 g / 100g, 19 g / 100g, 18 g / 100g, 17 g / 100g, 16 g / 100g, 15 g / 100g, 14 g / 100g, 13 g / 100g, 12 g / 100g, 11 g / 100g, 10 g / 100g, 9 g / 100g, 8 g / 100g, 7 g / 100g, 6 g / 100g or 5 g / 100 g, or in a range composed of any of the above values. In some exemplary embodiments, the surface-modified filler has an oil absorption of about from 6 g / 100 g to from 12 g / 100 g, from 8 g / 100 g to 15 g / 100 g, or from 10 g / 100 g to 15 g / 100 g. The oil absorption may be determined by using methods and equipment known in the art. For example, it may be determined in accordance with GB / T 5211.15-2014. The inventors have found that the texturing effect of the cured coating can be improved by using a surface-modified filler with an appropriate oil absorption.

[0055] In some embodiments, the surface-modified filler has a surface-modified portion and a core portion. The core portion may be one or more of precipitated barium sulfate, barite powder, heavy calcium, rutile titanium dioxide, talc powder of 350 mesh or coarser (such as 350 mesh) , and quartz powder of 350 mesh or coarser (such as 350 mesh) . Preferably, the core portion may be one or more of precipitated barium sulfate, barite powder, heavy calcium, and rutile titanium dioxide. Particularly preferably, the core portion may be precipitated barium sulfate, barite powder, or a combination thereof.

[0056] In some embodiments, the surface-modified filler has a D50 in the range of from 0.8 μm to 2 μm, preferably in the range of from 0.9 μm to 1.8 μm, more preferably in the range of from 1.0 μm to 1.5 μm. For example, the surface-modified filler may have a D50 of about 0.8 μm, 0.9 μm, 1.0 μm, 1.1 μm, 1.2 μm, 1.3 μm, 1.4 μm, 1.5 μm, 1.6 μm, 1.7 μm, 1.8 μm, 1.9 μm or 2.0 μm, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0058] In some embodiments, the surface-modified filler has a specific gravity in a range of from 2 g / cm3 to 6 g / cm3, preferably in the range of from 2.2 g / cm3 to 5.5 g / cm3, more preferably in the range of from 2.5 g / cm3 to 5.0 g / cm3. For example, the surface-modified filler may have a specific gravity of about 2.0 g / cm3, 2.2 g / cm3, 2.5 g / cm3, 2.8 g / cm3, 3.0 g / cm3, 3.2 g / cm3, 3.5 g / cm3, 3.8 g / cm3, 4.0 g / cm3, 4.2 g / cm3, 4.3 g / cm3, 4.4 g / cm3, 4.5 g / cm3, 4.8 g / cm3, 5.0 g / cm3, 5.2 g / cm3, 5.5 g / cm3, 5.8 g / cm3, or 6.0 g / cm3, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0059] In some embodiments, the surface-modified filler has a bulk density in a range of from 0.3 g / cm3 to 5 g / cm3, preferably in the range of from 0.5 g / cm3 to 4.0 g / cm3, more preferably in the range of from 0.8 g / cm3 to 3.0 g / cm3. For example, the surface-modified filler may have a bulk density of about 0.3 g / cm3, 0.5 g / cm3, 0.6 g / cm3, 0.7 g / cm3, 0.8 g / cm3, 0.9 g / cm3, 1.0 g / cm3, 1.2 g / cm3, 1.3 g / cm3, 1.5 g / cm3, 1.8 g / cm3, 2.0 g / cm3, 3.0 g / cm3, 3.5 g / cm3, 4.0 g / cm3, 4.5 g / cm3, or 5.0 g / cm3, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0060] In some embodiments, the surface-modified filler has a compaction density in a range of from 0.5 g / cm3 to 6 g / cm3, preferably in the range of from 0.8 g / cm3 to 5.0 g / cm3, more preferably in the range of from 1.0 g / cm3 to 4.0 g / cm3. For example, the surface-modified filler may have a compaction density of about 0.5 g / cm3, 0.6 g / cm3, 0.7 g / cm3, 0.8 g / cm3, 0.9 g / cm3, 1.0 g / cm3, 1.2 g / cm3, 1.3 g / cm3, 1.5 g / cm3, 1.6 g / cm3, 1.7 g / cm3, 1.8 g / cm3, 1.9 g / cm3, 2.0 g / cm3, 2.1 g / cm3, 2.2 g / cm3, 2.5 g / cm3, 3.0 g / cm3, 3.5 g / cm3, 4.0 g / cm3, 4.5 g / cm3, 5.0 g / cm3, 5.5 g / cm3, or 6.0 g / cm3, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0061] In some embodiments, the surface-modified filler is surface-treated by one or more composite coatings of silane coupling agent, silicon aluminum and polymer. This surface modification can further facilitate the good mixing of filler and resin, and the obtaining of cured coating with excellent texturing effects.

[0062] In some embodiments, the silane coupling agent has Y (CH2) mSiX3, wherein m = 0, 1, 2 or 3, and Y is or comprises one or more groups of alkenyl, (meth) acryloyloxy, aminoalkyl, isocyanatoalkyl, epoxyalkyl, and ureidoalkyl, and each X is independently selected from methyl, ethyl, halogen, methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, isopropoxy or trimethylsiloxy, provided that at least one X is methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, isopropoxy or trimethylsiloxy.

[0063] Preferably, the silane coupling agent has a double bond and a relatively large steric hindrance. In some embodiments, the silane coupling agent is selected from one or more of vinyl trimethoxysilane, vinyl triethoxysilane, vinyl triisopropoxysilane, (meth) acryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane, (meth) acryloxypropyl triethoxysilane, (meth) acryloxypropyl methyldimethoxysilane, (meth) acryloxypropyl methyldiethoxysilane, (meth) acryloxypropyl tris (trimethylsiloxy) silane, γ-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane, tris (3-trimethoxysilylpropyl) isocyanurate, γ-isocyanatopropyl trimethoxysilane, γ-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane, 3-glycidyloxypropyl triethoxysilane, and diethoxymethyl [ (3-oxiranylmethoxy) propyl] silane. Preferably, the silane coupling agent is selected from one or more of vinyl triisopropoxysilane, acryloxypropyl triethoxysilane, γ-methacryloxypropyl triethoxysilane, γ-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane, tris (3-trimethoxysilylpropyl) isocyanurate.

[0064] In some embodiments, the amount of silane coupling agent may be 0.02 wt. %to 10 wt.%, relative to the total weight of the surface-modified filler. For example, the silane coupling agent may be present in an amount of about 0.02 wt. %, 0.05 wt. %, 0.1 wt. %, 0.5 wt. %, 1 wt. %, 1.2 wt. %, 1.8 wt. %, 2 wt. %, 2.5 wt. %, 3 wt. %, 3.5 wt. %, 4 wt. %, 5 wt. %, or 8 wt. %, relative to the total weight of the surface-modified filler. Preferably, the amount of silane coupling agent may be from 1.5 wt. %to 4 wt. %. Other ranges formed from the above numerical values and the upper limits and the lower limits of the above ranges may be used.

[0065] In some embodiments, the silane coupling agent has a molecular weight of from 100 to 800 Daltons, preferably from 200 to 400 Daltons, such as about 150 Daltons, about 250 Daltons, or 300 Daltons.

[0066] Preferably, the silane coupling agent is an epoxy silane coupling agent. For example, Y is an alkyl group terminated by an epoxy group.

[0067] The inventors have found that on the one hand, the active groups in the silane coupling agents can react with the surface of the substrate, improving the adhesion of the coating to the substrate; On the other hand, the silane coupling agents can further control the viscosity changes of fillers in coating compositions, improving the texturing effect of coatings. In particular, the benefits in these two aspects are more prominent when epoxy silane coupling agent is used.

[0068] In some embodiments, based on the total weight of the coating composition, the amount of the surface-modified filler may be from 20 wt. %to 60 wt. %, preferably from 25 wt. %to 55 wt. %, and more preferably from 30 wt. %to 50 wt. %. For example, based on total weight of the coating composition, the surface-modified filler may be present in an amount of 20 wt. %, 25 wt. %, 30 wt. %, 35 wt. %, 40 wt. %, 45 wt. %, 50 wt. %, 55 wt. %, or 60 wt. %, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0069] In some embodiments, the coating composition may be a two-component coating composition. In addition to a resin component comprising a polyaspartic acid ester and a filler, the two-component coating composition may further have a curing agent component comprising at least one polyisocyanate. The two-component coating composition still maintains a relatively fast reaction speed and can achieve fast drying at room temperature without baking.

[0070] In a coating composition comprising amino and / or hydroxy functional resin, employ isocyanates and isocyanurates may be preferably used as curing agents. By way of illustration, the polyisocyanate curing agent may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, and aromatic polyisocyanates, such as trimethylene diisocyanate, 1, 2-propylene diisocyanate, tetramethylene diisocyanate, 2, 3-butylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, octamethylene diisocyanate, 2, 4-trimethylhexamethylene diisocyanate, 2, 4, 4-trimethylhexamethylene diisocyanate, dodecamethylene diisocyanate, 1, 3-cyclopentylidene diisocyanate, 1, 2-cyclohexylidene diisocyanate, 1, 4-cyclohexylidene diisocyanate, 4-methyl-1, 3-cyclohexylidene diisocyanate, meta-and p-phenylene diisocyanate, 1, 3-and 1, 4-bis (isocyanate methyl) benzene, 1, 5-dimethyl-2, 4-bis (isocyanate methyl) benzene, 1, 3, 5-triisocyanatebenzene, 2, 4-toluene diisocyanate, 2, 6-toluene diisocyanate, 2, 4, 6-toluene triisocyanate, α, α, α′, α′-tetramethyl o-, m -and p-xylylene diisocyanate, 4, 4′-diphenylene diisocyanate methane, 4, 4′-diphenylene diisocyanate, 3, 3′-dichloro-4, 4′-diphenylene diisocyanate, naphthalene-1, 5-diisocyanate, isophorone diisocyanate, trans-vinylidene diisocyanate, and mixtures of the above-mentioned polyisocyanates.

[0071] In some embodiments, at least one polyisocyanate comprises hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) , isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) , trimethylhexane diisocyanate (TMDI) , dicyclohexylmethane-4, 4'-diisocyanate (HMDI) , toluene diisocyanate (TDI) , xylylene diisocyanate (XDI) , tetramethyl-m-xylylene diisocyanate (TMXDI) , hexahydrotoluene diisocyanate (HTDI) , or dimers or trimers thereof, or derivatives thereof, or any combination thereof, preferably comprises hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) , isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) , or any combination thereof.

[0072] In some exemplary two-component coating compositions, the amount of curing agent component can be adjusted based on the experience of those skilled in the art depending on the amount of resin component, particularly the amount of amino-and / or hydroxyl-functional resin in the resin component. In some embodiments, the weight ratio of the resin component to the curing agent component may be in the range of from 100: 5 to 100: 35, more preferably in the range of from 100: 10 to 100: 30. For example, the weight ratio of the resin component to the curing agent component may be 100: 15, 100: 23, or other weight ratios of the resin component to the curing agent component commonly used in the art.

[0073] In some embodiments, the coating composition as described herein has a solid content of from 80 wt. %to 98 wt. %, more preferably from 82 wt. %to 96 wt. %, and even more preferably from 85 wt. %to 95 wt. %. For example, the solid content of the coating composition may be 80 wt. %, 82 wt. %, 84 wt. %, 85 wt. %, 86 wt. %, 87 wt. %, 88 wt. %, 89 wt. %, 90 wt. %, 91 wt. %, 92 wt. %, 93 wt. %, 94 wt. %, 95 wt. %, 96 wt. %, 97 wt. %, or 98 wt. %, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0074] In some embodiments, the coating composition is substantially free of a texture additive. The inventors have found that the texture additives commonly used in this field to achieve texturing effects (such as in acrylic resins) are not widely applicable to all coating compositions, and the obtained texturing effects are not stable. Even, the inventors have found that in some coating compositions with relatively high system viscosity, the addition of texture additives is difficult to change the surface tension and cannot significantly increase the texturing effect like it does in acrylic resin systems. Furthermore, unlike the mode of action of texture additives, the coating composition described herein are capable of achieving good texturing results substantially without texture additives.

[0075] In embodiments according to the present application, the carrier is optional in the formulation of the coating composition. In some embodiments, the coating composition is substantially free of a carrier to obtain an ultra-low VOC coating composition. In some embodiments, the coating composition may comprise an organic solvent as a carrier in order to further adjust the viscosity of the coating composition. The addition of organic solvents can increase the volatilization rate of coating compositions and accelerate the formation of paint films. Examples of the organic solvent include, but are not limited to, ketones (such as acetone, methyl isopropyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, etc. ) , esters (ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, etc. ) , aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylene, etc. ) , aliphatic hydrocarbons (cyclopentane, cyclohexane, etc. ) , or any combination thereof.

[0076] In some embodiments, for example, the carrier, if present, may comprise from about 3 wt. %to 15 wt. %, more preferably from about 5 wt. %to 10 wt. %, of the total weight of the coating composition or resin component (when in a two-component coating composition) . For example, the carrier may comprise about 5 wt. %, about 6 wt. %, about 7 wt. %, about 8 wt. %, about 9 wt. %, about 10 wt. %of the total weight of the coating composition or resin component (when in a two-component coating composition) , or in a range composed of any of the above values. Typically, the desired amount of carrier is usually empirically determined based on the film-forming properties of the paint film.

[0077] In some embodiments, the coating composition may optionally further comprise other optional additional additives commonly used in the art. Suitable additional additives may include fillers different from the surface-modified fillers described above (e.g. talc, wollastonite) , dispersing agents, antifoaming agents, leveling agents, corrosion inhibitors, adhesion promoters, film-forming aids, anti-sag agents, or any combination thereof.

[0078] Each of above optional ingredients is present in an amount sufficient to serve its intended purpose, but preferably, such an amount does not adversely affect the coating composition or the coating therefrom. In some embodiments, the total amount of additional additives relative to the total weight of the coating composition or resin component (when in a two-component coating composition) is in a range of about 0 wt. %to about 65 wt. %, preferably in a range of about 0.1 wt. %to about 60 wt. %. The respective amounts of individual additional additives can be in the range of from 0 wt. %to 10 wt. %, or in the range of from 0 wt. %to 5 wt. %, such as 0 wt. %, 0.5 wt. %, 1 wt. %, 2 wt. %, 3 wt. %, 4 wt. %, 5 wt. %, or in a range composed of any of the above values.

[0079] In a specific embodiment according to the present application, based on the total weight of the coating composition or the total weight of the resin component, the coating composition or the resin component of the two-component coating composition comprises:

[0080] from 15 wt. %to 35 wt. %, preferably from 20 wt. %to 30 wt. %of a polyaspartic acid ester;

[0081] from 20 wt. %to 60 wt. %, preferably from 30 wt. %to 50 wt. %of a surface-modified filler having an oil absorption of 20 or less;

[0082] from 0 wt. %to 15 wt. %of a carrier, preferably from 5 wt. %to 12 wt. %of a carrier;

[0083] from 0 wt. %to 65 wt. %of an additional additive, preferably from 0.1 wt. %to 60 wt. %of an additional additive.

[0084] The preparation of the coating composition can be accomplished using any suitable mixing method known to those of ordinary skill in the art. For example, a coating composition can be prepared by adding a polyaspartic acid ester, a surface-modified filler, a carrier (if present) , and a additional additive (if present) into a container, and then stirring the resulting mixture to form a coating composition or a resin component.

[0085] The two-component coating compositions thus formed can be used as coatings in general industrial fields, such as topcoats applied to machine tools, forklifts, safe boxes and the like. The properties of fast drying, no baking and texture described herein are highly desirable for the above application scenarios.

[0086] Moreover, the coating composition described herein have completed the production line trial and been mass-produced, and gained high praise from customers with very favorable cost advantages and performance advantages.

[0087] The coating composition as described herein may be applied using a variety of methods familiar to those skilled in the art, including spraying (for example, air-assisted, airless, or electrostatic spraying) , brushing, rolling, flooding, and dipping. In some embodiments, coating composition is applied by electrostatic spraying. Curing may be achieved by air drying the applied coating or by accelerating curing in various drying devices familiar to those skilled in the art, such as an oven. Preferably, the coating composition described herein can be quickly dried without baking while obtaining good texturing effects and low VOC emissions. The coating composition described herein are well suited for application / construction.

[0088] In some embodiments, the coating composition described herein have a VOC content of not more than 200 g / L, preferably not more than 180 g / L, as determined in accordance with GB / T23985. For example, the coating composition described herein has a VOC content of 100 g / L, 120 g / L, 130 g / L, 140 g / L, 150 g / L, 160 g / L, 180 g / L, or 200 g / L, or in a range composed of any of the above values, as determined in accordance with GB / T23985.

[0089] As mentioned above, the inventors of the present application have surprisingly found that the coating composition or two-component coating composition described herein has the advantages including low VOC emission, quick drying at room temperature, suitability for construction, and the like, especially suitability for use in general industrial fields.

Examples

[0097] Test methods:

[0098] Oil absorption

[0099] Oil absorption of a filler was determined in accordance with GB / T 5211.15-2014.

[0100] VOC emission

[0101] According to GB / T23985-2009, the volatile organic compound (VOC) content of the coating composition was determined by the difference method.

[0102] Dry-to-Touch time

[0103] Dry-to-Touch time was measured by mixing components of a coating composition at 25℃, applying to a substrate at Dry film thickness (DFT) of 50 μm to 60 μm at RH 50-60%and then firmly thumb-pressing against the surface of paint for a period of time, recording the time from the application to the drying stage where no finger pressure mark on the surface of the paint or no damage to the surface of coating was spotted.

[0104] Texturing Effects

[0105] The various components of the coating materials were mixed, applied onto the test plate, and cured. Then, a visual comparison with a reference color plate was performed, and a texturing effect morphology focusing on the horizontal direction of the coating and a stereoscopic effect morphology focusing on the vertical direction were evaluated. The results were evaluated on a scale of 1 to 5.5 indicates that the coating exhibits obvious stereoscopic effect morphology, and 1 indicates that no or almost no stereoscopic effect morphology is observed on the surface of the coating.
