Description

ONE-COMPONENT SILICONE RUBBER COMPOSITION, ARTICLE THEREOF AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAMETechnical field

[0001] The present invention relates to one-component (1 K) silicone rubber compositions and to the use thereof. More particularly, deacetone type one-component (1 K) curable silicone rubber compositions and the use as sealant, a method for manufacturing the same, and an article comprising the room temperature cured one-component (1 K) silicon rubber composition as sealant.Background of the invention

[0002] Silicone rubber has excellent high and low temperature resistance, electrical insulation, weather resistance, ozone resistance, breathability, high transparency, tear strength, excellent heat dissipation and excellent adhesion, fluidity and mold release It has a wide range of applications in electronics, transportation, aviation, medical and construction.

[0003] At present, the commonly used silicone rubber mainly has two types of curing methods: addition molding and condensation. Addition molding is mainly cured by hydrosilylation, while condensation type is mainly cured by hydrolytic condensation reaction of alkoxy groups. Addition molding curing usually requires metal organics such as platinum complex to catalyze, which not only increases the cost of the entire system, but also has catalyst poisoning and incomplete catalysis under certain application environments. Sometimes, as a result, the curing is not complete or even cured, and the metal organic catalyst also has certain environmental protection problems and storage stability problems. In contrast to the addition silicone, the condensation silicone has a limited shelf life because the hardener comes out of the silicone.

[0004] The curing speed of the condensation type (especially the single-component type) is related to the concentration and temperature of the moisture in the air, and heating alone cannot accelerate the curing. Depending on the type of reaction by-product, it is classified into a type such as dealcoholization type, deoxime type and deacetone type.

[0005] The condensation type moisture-curable silicone rubber sealant system is well known to have several advantages. However, when such sealants, especially deacetone type sealants were used to bond inorganic substrates, especially to bond metal substrates, the sealant always fails long-term storage stability, and can’t pass aging resistance (oil / medium) test after long term or high temperature storage.Summary of the invention

[0006] The present invention provides one-component (1 K) moisture-curable silicone rubber sealant compositions which can be used as sealant on metal substrates, especially on cast metal substrates, with improved adhesion property, aging resistance (oil / medium) property, long-term storage stability. The silicone rubber sealant of present invention could be cured at room temperature and has low VOC emission. It provides an efficient method for bonding a silicone rubber sealant to an inorganic surface (cast metal) without pre-treatment.

[0007] In one aspect, the present invention is related to a one-component silicone rubber composition comprises: a reactive or curable silicone, an effective amount of deacetone type crosslinker, an effective amount of organometallic catalyst, and a silane compound, the silane compound being represented by the following formulas:

[0008] wherein, independently, 1A, 2A, being the same or different, and each being hydrogen, C1-C10, linear or branched, aliphatic or alicyclic or substituted alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbons, and 1A, 2A not being hydrogen simultaneously, 3A being a linear or branched, aliphatic or alicyclic or substituted alicyclic or aromatic divalent hydrocarbon residue having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, 4A, 5A, being the same or different, and each representing a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, n being an integer of 0 to 2.

[0009] In another aspect, the present invention provides an article includes a sealant on a surface of the article, wherein the sealant is a cured product of the composition of present invention.

[0010] In still another aspect, the present invention provides a method of using a one-component silicone rubber sealant, the method including applying the one-component moisture-curable silicone rubber composition of the present invention to at least a surface of an article and then curing the one-component moisture-curable silicone rubber composition on the surface to prepare a sealant.

[0011] Further objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following detailed description and examples of a presently preferred embodiment.Detailed description of the invention

[0012] In the following passages the present invention is described in more detail. Each aspect so described may be combined with any other aspect or aspects unless clearly indicated to the contrary. In particularly, any feature indicated as being preferred or advantageous may be combined with any other feature or features indicated as being preferred or advantageous.

[0013] In the context of the present invention, the terms used are to be construed in accordance with the following definitions, unless a context dictates otherwise.

[0014] As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” include both singular and plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. As used in this specification and the appended claims, the term "or" is generally employed in its sense including "and / or" unless the content clearly dictates otherwise.

[0015] The terms “comprising” , “comprises” and “comprised of” as used herein are synonymous with “including” , “includes” or “containing” , “contains” , and are inclusive or open-ended and do not exclude additional, non-recited members, elements or process steps.

[0016] Unless specified otherwise, the recitation of numerical end points includes all numbers and fractions subsumed within the respective ranges, as well as the recited end points.

[0017] All percentages given herein in relation to the compositions or formulations relate to weight %relative to the total weight of the respective composition or formula, if not explicitly stated otherwise.

[0018] Unless otherwise defined, all terms used in the disclosing the invention, including technical and scientific terms, have the meaning as commonly understood by one of the ordinary skills in the art to which this invention belongs to. By means of further guidance, term definitions are included to better appreciate the teaching of the present invention.

[0019] The term “cure” refers to exposing to radiation in any form, heating, or allowing to undergo a physical or chemical reaction that results in hardening or an increase in viscosity.

[0020] The sealant of the invention is a one-component, moisture-curing composition. As used herein, “one-component” means that all ingredients of the sealant (except H2O which is supplied during moisture-curing process) are formed into a single blended material.

[0021] The term “moisture curable” as used herein means that the composition can carry out the curing or crosslinking reaction upon its exposure to moisture existed in atmosphere. In particular, the moisture cure in present invention involves a reaction in which the reactive or curable silicone was cured by hydrolytic condensation reaction of alkoxy groups of reactive or curable silicone and silane crosslinker.

[0022] The term “hydrolysis reaction” as used herein means that the cured silicone rubber composition can carry out hydrolysis reaction upon its exposure to moisture existed in atmosphere. In particular, the hydrolysis reaction involves i) a reaction of water or water vapor in the environment with silicon-oxygen bond in the cured silicon rubber composition; ii) a reaction of water or water vapor in the environment with silane compound. Compared reaction i) with ii) , it is surprisingly found that reaction ii) preferentially occurs when exposed to water / water vapor in the air.

[0023] As used herein, "Mw" refers to the weight average molecular weight and means the theoretical value as determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) relative to linear polystyrene standards of 1.1 M to 580 Da and may be performed using Waters 2695 separation module with a Waters 2414 differential refractometer (RI detector) . "Mn" refers to the number average molecular weight and  means the theoretical value as determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) too.

[0024] As used herein, the glass transition temperature (Tg) or the melting point of a specific polymer is determined using DSC according to DIN 53 765.

[0025] It was surprisingly found that the object of present invention is solved by a silicone rubber composition comprising a cured product which is obtained from a one-component (1 K) moisture-curable silicone rubber composition. The one-component (1 K) moisture-curable silicone rubber composition comprises a silicone rubber, an effective amount of crosslinker, an effective amount of catalyst, and a special silane compound.

[0026] Silicone

[0027] The silicone (silicone resin) in present invention includes reactive or curable silicone. The reactive or curable silicone works as backbone after curing of the silicone rubber composition, and can provide the composition with necessary mechanical strength, bonding strength, aging resistance, and other functional performance after curing.

[0028] According to embodiments of the invention, the reactive or curable silicone contains active groups such as hydroxyl group and / or alkoxyl group and can therefore carry out the curing or crosslinking reaction with the crosslinker upon exposure to moisture.

[0029] The reactive or curable silicone may comprise at least one selected from a group comprising a hydroxyl-containing silicone, an alkoxyl-containing silicone, and the combination thereof, and preferably a hydroxyl-containing silicone.

[0030] The hydroxyl-containing silicone may comprise a silicone as represented by the following formula (I)

[0031] wherein R1 and R2 are independently selected from a group consisting of H, substituted or unsubstituted C1-12 alkyl, C2-12 alkenyl, C2-12 alkynyl, C1-12 alkoxyl, and C6-12 aryl; and n is an integer of from 1,000 to 3,000,000, preferably from 100,000 to 2,000,000, more preferably from 500,000 to 2,000,000.

[0032] The examples of the hydroxyl-containing silicone may comprise a hydroxy-containing polydimethylsiloxane. Such hydroxyl-containing silicones are commercially available, for example as 107 series silicone rubbers available from Dow Corning, or similar materials available from Wacker Chemie AG, Momentive, Shin-Etsu Chemical, BlueStar, or Jiangsu Hongda Company.

[0033] The alkoxyl-containing silicone may comprise a moiety of formula (II)

[0034] wherein each R is independently selected from a group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted C1-12 alkyl, particularly C1-10 alkyl, more particularly C1-6 alkyl, even more particularly methyl or ethyl.

[0035] The examples of the alkoxyl-containing silicone may comprise a methoxy-containing silicone, an ethoxy-containing silicone, and the combination thereof.

[0036] The reactive or curable silicone may have a number-average molecular weight (Mn) of from 10,000 to 3,000,000, preferably from 100,000 to 2,000,000, and more preferably from 500,000 to 2,000,000. The reactive or curable silicone is preferably selected to exhibit a high viscosity.

[0037] According to certain embodiments of the invention, when the content of the reactive or curable silicone in the composition is too high, the composition before curing may be very soft or tacky, which may possibly affect the installation performance of the composition, and when the content of the reactive or curable silicone in the composition is too low, the strength of the composition after curing may be possibly impaired.

[0038] According to certain embodiments of the invention, the content of the reactive or curable silicone may be generally in the range of 10%-50%by weight, preferably 20%-45%by weight and more preferably 35%-45%, based on the total weight of the composition.

[0039] Crosslinker (Crosslinking agent)

[0040] Some organosilicon compounds can be used as crosslinker, which refers to a silane containing two or more silicon functional groups, which can act as a bridge between linear molecules, so that multiple linear molecules or slightly branched macromolecules and polymers can be bonded and cross-linked to form a three-dimensional network. It promotes or mediates the formation of covalent bonds or ionic bonds between polymer molecular chains. The cross-linking agent is the core part of the one-component room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber, which is the basis for determining the cross-linking mechanism and classification and naming of the product.

[0041] Suitable crosslinker (also called “crosslinking agent” ) of present invention is deacetone type crosslinker, which can react with the reactive or curable silicone upon exposure to moisture. Specifically, the crosslinker can be hydrolyzed in the presence of moisture and then react with the reactive or curable silicone.

[0042] The crosslinker may comprise at least one selected from a group including an alkoxy functional curing agent, an acetoxy functional curing agent, an oxime functional curing agent, a keto functional curing agent, and the combination thereof. Preferably, the crosslinker comprises at least one selected from a group including vinyltriisopropensilane, phenyltriisopropenoxysilane, methyltriisopropyloxysilane, tetraisopropyloxysilane, etc.

[0043] Deketone type room temperature curing silicone rubber has good adhesion, meanwhile , it is odorless and non-corrosive. Because the released acetone has a low boiling point, it is easy to diffuse and volatilize, then the surface and interior could be solidified quickly.

[0044] The crosslinker may be commercially available and the examples thereof may include Crosslinker K 10 available from Evonik, SCA-V71 PE from Nanjing Capatue Chemical Co., Ltd., SWIN-VIPS and SWIN-PHIPS from Nanjing Siwin New Material Co., Ltd.

[0045] According to certain embodiments of the invention, the crosslinker may be added into the composition in an amount of from 0.1%to 25%by weight, or from 0.8%to 15%by weight, or from 2%to 10%by weight, or from 4%to 7%by weight, based on the amount of the reactive or curable silicone.

[0046] Some organosilicon compounds can be used as coupling agent to improve the adhesion properties of silicone rubber on the substrates. Generally speaking, cross-linking agents are different from silane coupling agents, but there are exceptions. Coupling agent is a kind of organosilicon compound containing two different chemical properties in the molecule at the same time, which is used to improve the actual bonding strength between polymers and inorganic substances.

[0047] Silane compound

[0048] The silane compound of present invention can be commercially available or be prepared by known methods.

[0049] In some embodiments, the silane compounds have a formula as below:

[0050] wherein, independently,

[0051] 1A, 2A, may being the same or different, and each being hydrogen, C1-C10, linear or branched, aliphatic or alicyclic or substituted alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbons. And 1A, 2A not being hydrogen simultaneously. Preferably 1A, 2A being different and each being C1-C6, linear or branched, aliphatic or alicyclic or substituted alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon group.

[0052] 3A being a linear or branched, aliphatic or alicyclic or substituted alicyclic or aromatic divalent hydrocarbon residue having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, preferably having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, more preferably 3A being -CH2-CH2-or -CH2-CH2-CH2-.

[0053] 4A, 5A, may being the same or different, and each representing a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, preferably having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, more preferably 4A, 5A, each representing methyl, ethyl or isopropyl;

[0054] n being an integer of 0 to 2.

[0055] In some embodiments of present invention, the silane compounds include ( (Triethoxysilyl) propyl) methylisobutylimine, ( (Trimethoxysilyl) propyl) methylisobutylimine, ( (methyl dimethoxysilyl) propyl) methylisobutylimine and the like.

[0056] In some preferred embodiments, the content of silane compounds also impacts the degree of anti-aging in oil resistance and in liquid medium immersion resistance.

[0057] It is surprisingly found the silane compounds in present invention have a reaction speed quite lower than traditional deacetone type organosilicon crosslinking agent in the moisture curing reaction (about two orders of magnitude lower) . After complete curing, in the medium (water / glycol) ageing test, moisture / water that penetrated into the cured silicone can react preferentially with the imine bond of silane compounds rather than reacting with Si-O groups of the cured silicone rubber, thus the cured silicone rubber has an improved aging resistance service life in oil resistance.

[0058] Such silane compounds are commercially available, for example, KBE 9103 P from Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd., S340 from Chisso Corporation, Dynasylan VPS 1262 from Evonik.

[0059] According to certain embodiments of the invention, the silane compounds may be added into the composition in an amount of from 0.05%to 10%by weight, preferably from 0.9%to 5%by weight, or preferably from 0.9%to 2%by weight, or preferably from 0.2%to 2%by weight, or preferably from 0.2%to 1.8%by weight, or preferably from 0.3%to 1.6%by weight, based on the amount of the reactive or curable silicone.

[0060] Catalyst

[0061] The one-component silicone rubber sealant composition optionally comprises a catalyst. Generally, the rate of curing or crosslinking of the composition may depend on many factors such as ambient temperature and humidity, and the types of the crosslinker and the presence and type of the catalyst.

[0062] When the composition does not include any catalyst, the rate of curing or crosslinking may be slow. Therefore, it is needed to add a catalyst to the composition in order to accelerate the curing or crosslinking of the composition such that the reactive or curable silicone may form a network structure with the crosslinker within a shorter time upon exposure to moisture.

[0063] Curing catalysts include organic tin compounds, such as dibutyltin diacetate, dibutyltin dilaurate, and dibutyltin dioctoate; titanates. Titanium chelates are also suitable catalysts, such as tetraisopropoxytitanium, tetra-n-butoxytitanium, tetrakis (2-ethylhexoxy) titanium, dipropoxybis (acetylacetonato) titanium, and titanium isopropoxyoctylene glycol.

[0064] The catalytic amount of the catalyst may be added into the composition depending on the amount of the reactive or curable silicone. With particular preference, the catalyst may be incorporated into the one-component silicone rubber composition in an amount of from 0.05 to 0.5%by weight, preferably in an amount of from 0.06%to 0.3%, such as 0.08%, 0.09%, 0.11%by weight, based on the total amount of the composition.

[0065] It is possible to use commercially available products in the present invention. Examples thereof in clude Fomrez UL 28, UL38, which are available from Momentive.

[0066] Other compounds

[0067] For formulating sealant compositions, the sealant compositions of the invention are combined with fillers and additives known in the prior art for use in sealant compositions. By the addition of such fillers / additives, physical properties such as rheological properties, viscosity, flow rate, sag, and the like can be modified to desired values. However, to prevent premature hydrolysis of the moisture sensitive groups of the polymer, such filler / additives should be thoroughly dried before admixture therewith.

[0068] The silicone rubber composition of the present invention may contain, if necessary, various additives, in a range that does not inhibit the object of the present technology, such as fillers, plasticizers, antiaging agents, antioxidants, pigments (dyes) , thixotropic agents, ultraviolet absorbers, flame  retardants, surfactants (including leveling agents) , dispersing agents, dehydrating agents, adhesion promoters, and antistatic agents.

[0069] <Filler>

[0070] Examples of the fillers include organic or inorganic fillers of any form. Specific examples include hollow glass bubbles, fumed silica, calcined silica, precipitated silica, pulverized silica, molten silica; attapulgite, diatomaceous earth; aluminum powder, iron oxide, zinc oxide, titanium oxide, barium oxide, magnesium oxide; calcium carbonate, heavy calcium carbonate, precipitated calcium carbonate (light calcium carbonate) , colloidal calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, zinc carbonate; pyrophyllite clay, kaolin clay, calcined clay; fatty acid treated products, resin acid treated products, urethane compound treated products, PVC powder, and fatty acid ester treated products thereof; and the like. One type of these may be used alone, or two or more types of these may be used in combination.

[0071] Preparing method of the silicone rubber sealant compositions

[0072] A composition here referred to as a “one-component” composition is one in which all constituents of the composition are in the same container, and which is storage-stable per se. The moisture-curing silicone rubber composition is preferably a one-component composition. Given suitable packaging and storage, it is storage-stable, typically over 6 months, up to one year or longer.

[0073] On application of the moisture-curable silicone rubber composition, the process of curing commences. This results in the cured sealant composition.

[0074] The invention further provides a method of sealing, comprising the steps of:

[0075] 1) applying the one-component moisture-curable silicone rubber composition of present invention to a first substrate,

[0076] 2) optionally contacting the composition with a second substrate within the open time of the composition,

[0077] 3) curing the composition by contacting with moisture.

[0078] The sealant compositions can be applied to the substrate (s) by all known techniques. Before applying the one-component moisture-curable silicone rubber composition of present invention to substrate (s) , no extra pre-treatment to the surface of the substrate (s) , such as, applying primer coating on the surface, is needed.

[0079] The moisture required for the curing of the moisture-curable silicone rubber composition preferably gets into the composition through diffusion from the air (atmospheric moisture) . In the process, a solid layer of cured composition is formed on the surfaces of the composition which come into contact with air ( “skin” ) . The curing continues in the direction of diffusion from the outside inward, the skin becoming increasingly thick and ultimately encompassing the entire composition applied. The moisture on one or more substrate (s) preferentially react with the silicone rubber to form cross-linking structures in the presence of tin catalyst. The catalyst accelerates the curing or crosslinking of the silicone rubber such that the reactive or curable silicone may form a network structure with the crosslinker within a shorter time upon exposure to moisture. Due to low reaction speed, most of the silane compound of present invention, maybe haven't had time to react, were embedded in the composition matrix. It is surprisingly found that the reaction of imine group of the silane compound with the moisture is prior to the hydrolysis of silico-oxygen bond of cured silicone rubber in the hydrolysis reaction in storage, thus unreacted imine group of the silane compound improve the water-resistant and then improve storage stability. Meanwhile, the cured silicone rubber sealant composition has good anti medium properties (oil / ethylene glycol) in later use.

[0080] The moisture-curable silicone rubber sealant composition is preferably applied at ambient temperature, especially in the range from about -10 to 50℃., preferably in the range from -5 to 45℃., especially 0 to 40℃.

[0081] The moisture-curable silicone rubber sealant composition is preferably likewise cured at ambient temperature.

[0082] The substrates are preferably inorganic substrates including glass, ceramics, metals, etc. Metal includes carbon steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, tin plate. The substrates of present invention may also include plastic substrates such as polycarbonate; powder coated substrates such  as automotive electrophoretic paint treated substrates. Particularly suitable substrates are bare metal.

[0083] The “curing rate” refers to the degree of polymer formation in the sealant composition within a given period of time after application, especially by determining the thickness of the skin formed.

[0084] The moisture-curing silicone rubber composition is especially suitable as sealant for the elastic sealing of all kinds of joins, seams or cavities, especially of joins in construction, such as expansion joins or connection joins between structural components, or of floor joins in civil engineering. A sealant having flexible properties and high cold flexibility is particularly suitable especially for the sealing of expansion joins in built structures.

[0085] It is understood that all embodiments disclosed herein in relation to the methods are similarly applicable to the disclosed dispersions, compositions, and uses and vice versa.

[0147] Results

[0148] Table 1.

[0149] Table 1 shows compositions of the one-component moisture-curable silicone rubber sealant compositions E1-E5 and CE1-CE4.

[0150] Table 2.

[0151] Table 2 shows test results of the one-component moisture-curable silicone rubber sealant compositions E1-E5 and CE1-CE4.

[0152] In Examples 1 to 5, the one-component moisture-curable silicone rubber compositions were prepared according to the formulations provided by the present invention. These formulations especially included a reactive or curable silicone, a deacetone type crosslinker, a tin catalyst and claimed silane compound. It can be seen that the prepared one-component moisture-curable  silicone rubber sealants E1 to E5 have good initial strength, long-term storage stability, especially with the presence of metal catalyst and good (oil / medium) resistance after aging.

[0153] Compared with E1, CE1 comprise ureidosilane instead of claimed silane compound. Although the initial strength of the composition is improved due to the addition of ureidosilane as coupling agent, the anti-aging performance of the composition of CE1 is worse than E1. The tensile strength value after medium (ethylene glycol) aging of CE1 is 72%of initial tensile strength value, meanwhile, the composition turned cured within only 24 hours storage.

[0154] E2 comprise both ureidosilane and claimed silane compound, the cured sample shows even better anti-aging performances than E1.

[0155] E4 comprise a silane containing primary amine and claimed silane compound, the anti-aging result of cured sample is not as good as E2, only the anti-aging performance in oil resistance is improved.

[0156] Compared E2 and CE4, suitable amount of claimed silane compound leads to better curing performance, good initial tensile strength, and a good balance between anti-oil aging and anti-medium aging.

[0157] Among E1, E5 and CE3, it can be seen access amount of claimed silane compound impact the anti-medium aging performance of the cured sample.

[0158] Based on the performance of CE3 and CE4, the storage stability problem has been solved by the presence of claimed silane compound with special formulas, but access amount or insufficient amount of claimed silane compound leads to bad anti-aging performance. In addition, insufficient amount of claimed silane compound also has impact on the curing performance, e.g., low initial tensile strength.

[0159] In E3, additional amine catalyst was added to the composition, the cured product has better cuing performance, such as good initial strength.
