AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The inconsistency between AI/ML model output and network device configuration for beam reporting in wireless communication networks leads to inefficiencies and increased latency in beam management, as the network device's configured report content may not align with the AI/ML model's predicted beam results.

Method used

A terminal device determines predicted beams based on measurement results and transmits a measurement report that includes either the beam's identifier and measurement result if it is measured or quality-related information if it is not, aligning with network device configurations to optimize reporting.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces unnecessary beam measurements and latency by ensuring timely reporting of measured beam results, thereby improving communication efficiency and reducing UE consumption.

Description

DEVICES AND METHODS FOR COMMUNICATION

[0001] FIELDS

[0002] Example embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of communication techniques and in particular, to devices and methods for measurement reporting.BACKGROUND

[0003] As communication networks and services increase in size, complexity, and number of users, operations in the communication networks may become increasingly more complicated. In order to improve the communication performance, machine learning (ML)  / artificial intelligence (AI) technology is proposed to be used in the wireless communication network. For example, the terminal device and the network device may use different ML model to assist communication-related functionalities, such as, beam management (BM) .

[0004] As one example scenario, the model may be deployed at the terminal device, and information about a predicted beam (s) may be outputted as the predicted results of the model. Further, information about the predicted beams may be transmitted to the network device via uplink transmission, such as via measurement report (which also call as beam report sometimes) . Generally speaking, how to report the measurement report (such as, the report content, the number of beams to be reported) is configured by the network device, while the output results are based on the model type, which causes that the output results may be not consistent with the report configuration. Thus, the measurement reporting procedure is needed to be further improved.SUMMARY

[0070] It is noted that when the term “a set / list of” is used, it may mean one or more elements / items, which may be replaced by terms of “at least one” , “a group of” . For example, “a set / list of X” means “at least one X” or “one or more Xs” .

[0071] As used herein, the term “model” is referred to as an association between an input and an output learned from training data, and thus a corresponding output may be generated for a given input after the training. The generation of the model may be based on a ML technique. The ML techniques may also be referred to as AI techniques. In general, a ML model can be built, which receives input information and makes predictions based on the input information.

[0072] As used herein, a model may be equivalent to at least one of the following: an AI / ML model, a ML model, an AI model, a data-driven algorithm / procedure, a data processing model, an algorithm, a functionality, a procedure, a process, an entity, a function, a feature, a feature group, a model identifier (ID) , an ID, a functionality ID, a configuration ID, a scenario ID, a site ID, or a dataset ID. As a result, the above terms may be used interchangeably.

[0073] In some embodiments, the model may comprise a set of weights values that may  be learned during training, for example for a specific architecture or configuration, where a set of weights values may also be called a parameter set.

[0074] In some embodiments, an input of the ML model (i.e., AI input) may refer to the input of a model and indicate data inputted into the model, which may be equivalent to data.

[0075] In some embodiments, an output of ML model (i.e., AI output) may refers to the output of a model and indicate result (s) outputted by the model, which is equivalent to label / data.

[0076] Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0077] Example Environment

[0078] FIG. 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the communication environment 100, a plurality of communication devices, including a terminal device 110 and a network device 120, can communicate with each other.

[0079] Further, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) may be supported in the communication environment 100, such that the network device 120 and the terminal device 110 may communicate with each other via different beams to enable a directional communication.

[0080] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the terminal device 110 operating as a UE. Further, the network device 120 may operate as a base station, or the network device 120 may have an RAN node function and partial core network function (s) . However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other device, and operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device.

[0081] In some example embodiments, if the terminal device 110 is a UE and the network device 120 is a base station, a link from the network device 120 to the terminal  device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the network device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the terminal device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the terminal device 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the network device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0082] In FIG. 1, the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 may communicate with each other via one or more beams. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the terminal device 110 may communicate with the network device 120 via the beams 130-1 to 130-3. For purpose of discussion, the beams 130-1 to 130-3 are collectively or individually referred to as beam 130. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the network device 120 may communicate with the terminal device 110 via the one or more of beams 140-1, 140-2 and 140-3. For purpose of discussion, the beams 140-1 to 140-3 are collectively or individually referred to as beam 140.

[0083] In some embodiments, one or more models may be deployed at the network device 120 and / or the terminal device 110. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the model 115 is deployed at the terminal device 110 and / or optionally the model 125 is deployed at the network device 120. Further, in the example of FIG. 1, the model 115 and / or the model 125 may assist such as BM, i.e., obtain input data and derive related output.

[0084] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections shown in FIG. 1 are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of devices configured to implementing example embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0085] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 may communicate with each other via a channel such as a wireless communication channel on an air interface (e.g., Uu interface) . The wireless communication channel may comprise a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) , a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , a physical random-access channel (PRACH) , a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) , a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) and a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) . Of course, any other suitable channels are also feasible.

[0086] The communications in the communication environment 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced  (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0087] Example Processes

[0088] As discussed above, an AI / ML model may be used for beam prediction. Further, below two types of model for BM-Case1 may be adopted, call as regression based model and classification based model. The main difference between the two types is in terms of model output. Specifically, the output of regression based model is predicted L1-RSRPs of all beams in Set A, while the output of classification based model is the best beam (s) in Set A.

[0089] Reference is now made to FIG. 2A, which illustrates an example block 200A of model training for classification-based model. In the example of FIG. 2A, Set A comprises of 16 beams (i.e., beam #0 to #15) while Set B is a subset of Set A, and Set B comprises of 4 beams (i.e., beam #0, beam #5, beam #10 and beam #15) .

[0090] As for a classification based model, in addition to the predicted best beam (e.g., ID(s) of the predicted best beam (s) in Set A, TX and / or RX Beam ID (s) of the N predicted downlink TX and / or RX beams) , the model also may output some other information, e.g., probability for the beam to be the best beam, the associated confidence, beam application time / dwelling time, predicted beam failure.

[0091] Reference is now made to FIG. 2B, which illustrates another example block 200B of model training for classification-based model. In the example of FIG. 2B, the probability (or confidence) may indicate a probability (e.g., percentage) for being the best beam in Set A. It can be seen as an intermediate output in model inference. Usually, the predicted best beam corresponds to the largest probability.

[0092] Generally speaking, the purpose of BM comprises finding the best beam (s) and evaluating quality of the best beam (s) to configure some data transmission parameters. For instance, obtain the best beam (s) in a set of beams involves the following two aspects: obtaining ID (e.g., CRI, SSBRI) of the best beam, obtaining quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of the best beam (s) .

[0093] Reference is now made to FIG. 3A, which illustrates a signaling flow 300A of regression based model. As illustrated in FIG. 3A, both the ID (s) and quality (ies) may be provided to the network device.

[0094] However, as for classification based model, the output of model only comprises ID(s) of predicted beam (s) . Reference is now made to FIG. 3B, which illustrates a signaling flow 300B of classification based model.

[0095] As illustrated in FIG. 3B, for classification based model, due to the model’s inability to output predicted L1-RSRP, the terminal device may only be configured to report ID of the predicted best beam. In this event, if the network device wants to obtain the quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of the best beam (s) , an additional measurement is performed. That is, compared with regression based model, additional beam measurement may be needed for determining quality of the best beam of Set A, which increases latency of finding the best beam in Set A.

[0096] In order to shorten the latency of finding the best beam in Set A, below enhancement may be considered. Specifically, if the predicted best beam in Set A is one of the beams in Set B, i.e., one of the measured beams, it means that UE has obtained the measured L1-RSRP of the predicted best beam. In this event, the additional beam measurement may be avoided by reporting the measured L1-RSRP of the predicted best beam together with the ID of the predicted best beam.

[0097] Further, as for the classification based model, the predicted best beam in Set A may or may not be one of the beams in Set B (i.e., one of the measured beams) as illustrated in FIG. 2A. If the predicted best beam in Set A is not one of the beams in Set B, additional beam measurements seem to be inevitably.

[0098] As discussed above, generally speaking, how to report the measurement report (such as, the report content, the number of beams to be reported) is configured by the network device. In some embodiments, the report content is configured by reportQuantity and number of beams to report by nrofReportedRS. Such pre-configured mechanism also may cause some issues.

[0099] For example, if the report content is pre-configured to beam ID, in a case that the predicted best beam in Set A is one of the beams in Set B (which means the best beam has a corresponding measurement result) , the terminal device will be unable to report the measured L1-RSRP, which would result in the additional beam measurement.

[0100] For another example, if the report content is pre-configured to beam ID and beam quality, in a case that the predicted best beam in Set A is not one of the beams in Set B, the terminal device will not be able to obtain measured L1-RSRP of the predicted best beam and therefore cannot report it.

[0101] Due to the above problems, a more efficient measurement reporting method is desirable. According to some embodiments of the present discourse, a solution of measurement reporting is proposed. Example embodiments will be discussed with reference to FIG. 4, which illustrates a signaling flow 400 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 400 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 1, for example, by using the terminal device 110 and the network device 120.

[0102] It is to be understood that the operations at the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 should be coordinated. In other words, the network device 120 and the terminal device 110 should have common understanding about configurations, parameters and so on. Such common understanding may be implemented by any suitable interactions between the network device 120 and the terminal device 110 or both the network device 120 and the terminal device 110 applying the same rule / policy. In the following, although some operations are described from a perspective of the terminal device 110, it is to be understood that the corresponding operations should be performed by the network device 120. Similarly, although some operations are described from a perspective of the network device 120, it is to be understood that the corresponding operations should be performed by the terminal device 110. Merely for brevity, some of the same or similar contents are omitted here.

[0103] In the following embodiments, the ML model is deployed at the terminal device 110.

[0104] As illustrated in FIG. 4, in operation, the terminal device 110 receives 410 first control information of a first measurement report from a network device 120. In one example, the terminal device 110 receives an RRC signaling to trigger a periodic measurement report. In another example, the terminal device 110 receives a MAC CE to trigger a semi-persistent measurement report. In a further example, the terminal device  110 receives a DCI an aperiodic measurement report.

[0105] Optionally, the first control information may indicate a report configuration which may indicate information about the report content / the number of beams to be reported.

[0106] Then, the terminal device 110 determines 420 at least one predicted beam based on a set of measurement results of a set of measured beams.

[0107] In some embodiments, the at least one predicted beam is comprised in a set of predicted beams, and the set of measured beams is a subset of the set of predicted beams. As one example, the terminal device 110, by using an AI / ML model (classification based model) , may determine at least one predicted beam (the best beams in Set A) based on a set of measurement results of a set of measured beams (measurement results of beams in Set B) .

[0108] In some embodiments, for a predicted beam of the at least one predicted beam, if the predicted beam is not comprised in the set of measured beams, the terminal device 110 transmits 430-1 the first measurement report at least comprising the identifier of the predicted beam and quality-related information of the predicted beam.

[0109] Alternatively, in some embodiments, for a predicted beam of the at least one predicted beam, if the predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beams, the terminal device 110 transmits 430-1 the first measurement report at least comprising an identifier of the predicted beam and the measurement result of the predicted beam.

[0110] Alternatively, in some embodiments, for a predicted beam of the at least one predicted beam, if the predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beams, the terminal device 110 maintains 430-2 a measurement result of the predicted beam.

[0111] Optionally, as illustrated in FIG. 4, the maintained measurement result (s) may be provided to the network device 120 in the following.

[0112] As illustrated in FIG. 4, in some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive 450 second control information from the network device 120. Similar with the first control information, the second control information also may be an RRC signalling, MAC CE or DCI.

[0113] As a result, upon the second control information, the terminal device 110 may  transmit a second measurement report comprising the maintained measurement result (s) to the network device 120.

[0114] Optional, upon the second control information, the terminal device 110 also may perform 460 a measurement (s) on measured beam (such as, a predicted best beam (s) and the measurement result of this beam has not been maintained) . Then, the terminal device 110 may transmit a second measurement report comprising the maintained measurement result (s) and the newly-measured measurement result (s) of the measured beam (s) to the network device 120.

[0115] In some embodiments, the quality-related information may be a maximum measurement result of the set of measurement results. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the quality-related information may be a bitstring with all the bits set to 0 or 1.

[0116] In some embodiments, the measurement result is one of the following:

[0117] ● layer 1 reference signal receiving power (L1-RSRP) value,

[0118] ● layer 1 signal to interference plus noise ratio (L1-SINR) value,

[0119] ● layer 1 reference signal receiving quality (L1-RSRQ) value,

[0120] ● layer 3 reference signal receiving power (L1-RSRP) value,

[0121] ● layer 3 signal to interference plus noise ratio (L1-SINR) value, or

[0122] ● layer 3 reference signal receiving quality (L1-RSRQ) value.

[0123] In some scenarios, the report content and the number of beams to report may be configured by the network device 120. In some other scenarios, for reporting predicted beams, the number of predicted beams to report may be determined by the terminal device 110, e.g., the predicted beams to report may be determined based on some thresholds or rules. In the following descriptions, these scenarios will be discussed separately.

[0124] Embodiments where the measurement report is configured for reporting ID of predicted beam and quality of predicted beam will be discussed first. As a general rule, in a case that the measurement report is configured for reporting both the ID of predicted beam and quality of predicted beam, if the predicted beam is a measured beam (i.e., comprised in Set B) , the terminal device 110 may report the measured L1-RSRP of the predicted beam, and if the predicted beam is not a measured beam (i.e., not comprised in  Set B) , the terminal device 110 may report quality-related information.

[0125] In this way, when the predicted beam is a measured beam, the corresponding L1-RSRP may be reported to network device 120 in time to avoid unnecessary beam measurement (or reduce latency of finding the best beam) . The UE consumption also may be reduced thereby. Accordingly, when the predicted beam is not a measured beam (or terminal device 110 does not obtain L1-RSRP of the predicted beam) , the terminal device 110 may know what information to report in the measurement report.

[0126] In operation, the terminal device 110 receives 410 first control information of a first measurement report from a network device 120, first control information of a first measurement report. Then, the terminal device 110 determines 420 at least one predicted beam based on a set of measurement results of a set of measured beams and transmit the first measurement report to the network device 120.

[0127] In some embodiments, if the first control information indicates the terminal device 110 to report identifier information and quality information of the at least one predicted beam, the first measurement report may comprise:

[0128] ● at least one identifier field, each identifier field indicating a respective identifier of one of the at least one predicted beam, and

[0129] ● at least one quality field, each quality field corresponding to one of the at least one predicted beam.

[0130] In particular, for a predicted beam of the at least one predicted beam, if the predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beams, the quality field indicates the measurement result of the predicted beam, or if the predicted beam is not comprised in the set of measured beams, the quality field indicates the quality-related information of the predicted beam.

[0131] Additionally, if the number of predicted beams to be reported is configured to be one, the first measurement report comprises an identifier field indicating the identifier of the predicted beam and a quality field. Further, if the predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beams, the quality field indicates the measurement result of the predicted beam, or if the predicted beam is not comprised in the set of measured beams, the quality field indicates quality-related information of the predicted beam.

[0132] Alternatively, if the number of predicted beams to be reported is configured to  be larger than one, the first measurement report comprises:

[0133] ● at least one identifier field, each identifier field indicating a respective identifier of one of the at least one predicted beam, and

[0134] ● at least one quality field, each quality field corresponding to one of the at least one predicted beam.

[0135] In particular, for a predicted beam of the at least one predicted beam, if the predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beams, the quality field indicates the measurement result of the predicted beam, or if the predicted beam is not comprised in the set of measured beams, the quality field indicates the quality-related information of the predicted beam.

[0136] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one identifier field may be based on at least one of the following:

[0137] ● at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or

[0138] ● measurement results of predicted beams of the at least one predicted beam.

[0139] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one quality field may be based on at least one of the following:

[0140] ● a mapping order of the at least one identifier field,

[0141] ● at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or

[0142] ● the measurement results.

[0143] In some embodiments, the at least one predicted beam comprises a first predicted beam and a second predicted beam, and if the first and second predicted beam are not comprised in the set of measured beams, the at least one quality field comprises:

[0144] ● a first quality field indicating first quality-related information of the first predicted beam, and

[0145] ● a second quality field indicating second quality-related information of the second predicted beam, the first quality-related information being the same as or different from the second quality-related information.

[0146] In some embodiments, at least one quality value indicated by the at least one  quality field is indicated by at least one absolute quality value of the at least one predicted beam.

[0147] Alternatively, in some embodiments, at least part of the at least one quality value may be indicated by an absolute quality value and one or more differential quality values.

[0148] In order to better understand the above example processes, more details are further discussed with reference to below embodiments.

[0149] In operation, the terminal device 110 is triggered by the network device 120 with a measurement report, which is configured to report ID of predicted beam and quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of predicted beam. As one example, the report content is configured as ‘CRIp-RSRP’ .

[0150] In some embodiments, in the measurement report, the ‘CRIp’ (also called as CRIp field) indicates the ID (e.g., CRI, SSBRI) of a predicted beam, and the ‘RSRP’ (also called as RSRP field) indicates the quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of a (predicted) beam. As a result, the measurement report comprises the CRIp field (s) and / or the RSRP field (s) .

[0151] In some embodiments, the measurement report is associated with (or the terminal device 110 is configured with) a set of measured beams (i.e., Set B) and a set of predicted beams (i.e., Set A) . Further, the set of measured beams is a subset of the set of predicted beams, and the terminal device 110 only measures the beams in the set of measured beams.

[0152] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine (measured) L1-RSRPs of the set of measured beams (i.e., Set B) . Then, the terminal device 110 may determine probabilities corresponding to all predicted beams in the set of predicted beams (i.e., Set A) based on the measured L1-RSRPs by using an AI / ML model.

[0153] In operation, the terminal device 110 may determine one or more predicted beams (from the set of predicted beams) based on the L1-RSRPs and the AI / ML model, which will be discussed separately.

[0154] As used herein, the top N (N≥1) predicted beam (s) may refer to the N predicted beam (s) with the largest probability (ies) . For example, the top 1 predicted beam may refer to the predicted beam with the largest probability determined based on the AI / ML model, and the top 4 predicted beam may refer to the 4 predicted beams with top four largest probabilities determined based on the AI / ML model.

[0155] In some embodiments, if the number of predicted beams to report configured by network device 120 is represented to be Kp and Kp is equal to 1, the measurement report may include one CRIp field and one RSRP field. In this event, the terminal device 110 may report ID of the top 1 predicted beam in the CRIp field.

[0156] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the top 1 predicted beam is a measured beam, i.e., one of the set of measured beams. If the top 1 predicted beam is a measured beam (this means that terminal device 110 has known about the measured L1-RSRP corresponding to the top 1 predicted beam) , the terminal device 110 may report the measured L1-RSRP of the top 1 predicted beam in the RSRP field. Alternatively, if the top 1 predicted beam is not a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report quality-related information in the RSRP field.

[0157] In some embodiments, the quality-related information may be one of the following: the largest measured L1-RSRP, or a number of zero or one padding bits (i.e., all bits of the RSRP field are set to zero or one) . Below table 1 illustrates an example measurement report, where beam #5 is a measured beam.

[0158] Table 1

[0159] Below table 2 illustrates an example measurement report, where beam #1 is not a measured beam.

[0160] Table 2

[0161] In some embodiments, when the value of Kp is larger than 1 (e.g., 4) , 4 CRIp fields and 4 RSRP fields may be included in the measurement report.

[0162] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report IDs of the top 4  predicted beams in the 4 CRIp fields.

[0163] In some embodiments, the mapping order of the 4 CRIp fields may be determined based on the probabilities corresponding to the top 4 predicted beams (referred to as the first mapping order) , e.g., it may follow descending (or ascending) order of the values of the probabilities corresponding to the top 4 predicted beams. For example, the mapping order of the 4 CRIp fields may be shown as below table 3. In the example of table 3, the corresponding probability of beam #1 > the corresponding probability of beam #5 > the corresponding probability of beam #8 > the corresponding probability of beam #10.

[0164] Table 3

[0165] Alternatively, in some embodiments, if there is at least one predicted beam that is a measured beam (e.g., multiple predicted beams that are measured beams) , the mapping order of the CRIp fields corresponding to these predicted beams may be determined based on the measured L1-RSRPs of these predicted beams (referred to as the second mapping order) , e.g., it may follow descending (or ascending) order of the values of the measured L1-RSRPs of these predicted beams. Optionally, any other mapping order is also possible.

[0166] In some embodiments, for each one of the top 4 predicted beams, the terminal device 110 may determine whether it is a measured beam. Specifically, if it is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report its measured L1-RSRP in an RSRP field, and if its measured L1-RSRP is the largest measured L1-RSRP (in all predicted beams that are measured beams) , its measured L1-RSRP may be reported based on an absolute L1-RSRP. Otherwise, its measured L1-RSRP may be reported based on a differential L1-RSRP (optionally, the absolute L1-RSRP may also be used) .

[0167] Additionally, in some embodiments, the differential L1-RSRP may be used when at least the second mapping order is adopted.

[0168] In some embodiments, if it is not a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report the quality-related information in a RSRP field.

[0169] In some embodiments, if there are multiple predicted beams that are not measured beams, the terminal device 110 may report different or the same information (e.g., the same quality-related information) in their corresponding RSRP fields. For example, there are 2 predicted beams that are not measured beams, the terminal device 110 may report two different measured L1-RSRPs (that correspond to predicted beams that are not measured beams) on their RSRP fields.

[0170] An example mapping order of the 4 RSRP fields and 4 CRIp fields is illustrated in below table 4 and table 5.

[0171] Table 4

[0172] Table 5

[0173] In some embodiments, when only the first mapping order is adopted, RSRP #1 corresponds to CRIp#1, RSRP #2 corresponds to CRIp#2 and the likes, i.e., one-to-one correspondence.

[0174] In some embodiments, when the second mapping order is adopted, RSRP #1 may be used to indicate an absolute L1-RSRP (or the quality-related information) , the other RSRP fields may be used to indicate a differential L1-RSRP (or the quality-related information) . In this case, the above one-to-one correspondence may not be adopted. But the determination of the mapping order of the 4 RSRP fields should be the same as that of the mapping order of the 4 CRIp fields, i.e., based on corresponding probabilities or measured L1-RSRPs.

[0175] In some embodiments, assuming that the top 4 predicted beams are beam-1, beam-5, beam-8 and beam-10. The relationship between their corresponding probabilities is: beam-1 > beam-5 > beam-8 > beam-10. There are 2 predicted beams (e.g., beam-5 and beam-10) that are measured beams, their measured L1-RSRP are L1-RSRP 1 and L1-RSRP 2 respectively, and the value of the L1-RSRP 1 is larger than that of the L1-RSRP 2. In this case, if only the first mapping order is adopted, the mapping order of the 4 RSRP fields, 4 CRIp fields (or the structure of the measurement report) may be shown as below table 6.

[0176] Table 6

[0177] In some embodiments, If the second mapping order is further adopted, the mapping order of the 4 RSRP fields, 4 CRIp fields (or the structure of the measurement report) may be shown as below table 7.

[0178] Table 7

[0179] Embodiments where the measurement report is configured for reporting ID of predicted beam will be discussed in the following. As a general rule, if the predicted beam is a measured beam (comprised in Set B) , the terminal device 110 may maintain measured L1-RSRP of the predicted beam.

[0180] In this way, when the predicted beam is a measured beam, the corresponding measured L1-RSRP may be maintained by the terminal device 110, and thus may avoid unnecessary beam measurement (or reduce latency of finding the best beam) and the UE consumption may be reduced accordingly. Further, the network device 120 may trigger a further measurement report as soon as possible to indicate terminal device 110 may report the measured L1-RSRP.

[0181] In operation, the terminal device 110 receives 410 first control information of a first measurement report from a network device 120, first control information of a first measurement report. Then, the terminal device 110 determines 420 at least one predicted beam based on a set of measurement results of a set of measured beams and transmit the first measurement report to the network device 120.

[0182] In some embodiments, if the first control information indicates the terminal device 110 to report identifier information of the at least one predicted beam, in  accordance with a determination that a first predicted beam of the at least one predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beams, the terminal device 110 may maintain a first measurement result of the first predicted beam. In the following, the terminal device 110 may receive second control information of a second measurement report from the network device 120, and may transmit the second measurement report comprising the first measurement result to the network device 120.

[0183] Optionally, whether to report the maintained first measurement result may be indicated by the network device 120 explicitly. In some embodiments, the second control information may comprise a first indication indicating the terminal device 110 to report the maintained first measurement result.

[0184] Optionally, the terminal device 110 also may perform an additional measurement on some measured beams (i.e., the predicted best beams which is not comprised in the set of measured beams, i.e., reported predicted beam (s) without a maintained measurement result) .

[0185] In some embodiments, the measurement on the measured beam (s) may be indicated by the network device 120 explicitly. In this case, the second control information may trigger the terminal device 110 to perform a measurement on a measured beam. As for the terminal device 110, the terminal device 110 may perform a measurement on the measured beam to obtain a second measurement result based on the second control information. Then the terminal device 110 may transmit the second measurement report to the network device 120, where the second measurement report may comprise the first and second measurement results.

[0186] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the termina device 110 may determine the measured beam (s) by itself. In operation, the terminal device 110 may maintain at least one first measurement result of at least one first predicted beam, wherein the at least one first predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beam. Then after receiving the second control information of a second measurement report from the network device 120, the terminal device 110 may determine measured beam (s) based on at least one of the following: the set of measured beams, the at least one first predicted beam, or the at least one predicted beam. As a result, the terminal device 110 may perform measurements on the determined at least one measured beam to obtain at least one second measurements result. Then, the terminal device 110 may transmit the second measurement report to the  network device 120, where the second measurement report comprises the at least one first measurement result and at least one second measurement result.

[0187] In some embodiments, the first and / or second measurement report may occupy a channel state information (CSI) processing unit (CPU) until a last symbol of resources configured for transmitting the second measurement report, or an expiration of a time duration.

[0188] In order to better understand the above example processes, more details are further discussed with reference to below embodiments.

[0189] In operation, the terminal device 110 is triggered by network device 120 with a measurement report, which is configured to report ID of predicted beam, e.g., the report content is configured as ‘CRIp’ , where the ‘CRIp’ (or CRIp field) indicates the ID (e.g., CRI, SSBRI) of a predicted beam. As result, the measurement report may comprise at least the CRIp field (s) .

[0190] In some embodiments, the measurement report is associated with (or the terminal device 110 is configured with) a set of measured beams (i.e., Set B) and a set of predicted beams (i.e., Set A) , where the set of measured beams is a subset of the set of predicted beams, and the terminal device 110 only measures the beams in the set of measured beams.

[0191] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine (measured) L1-RSRPs of the set of measured beams (i.e., Set B) .

[0192] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine probabilities corresponding to all predicted beams in the set of predicted beams (i.e., Set A) based on the measured L1-RSRPs and an AI / ML model. Optionally, the terminal device 110 determines only one predicted beam (from the set of predicted beams) based on the L1-RSRPs and the AI / ML model.

[0193] In some embodiments, if the number of predicted beams to report configured by network device 120 is represented to be Kp and Kp is equal to 1, the measurement report may include one CRIp field.

[0194] Similarly, the top N (N≥1) predicted beam (s) may refer to the N predicted beam (s) with the largest probability (ies) . For example, the top 1 predicted beam may refer to the predicted beam with the largest probability determined based on the AI / ML model, and the top 4 predicted beam may refer to the 4 predicted beams with top four  largest probabilities determined based on the AI / ML model.

[0195] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report the ID of the top 1 predicted beam in the CRIp field.

[0196] The terminal device 110 may determine whether the top 1 predicted beam is a measured beam, i.e., one of the set of measured beams.

[0197] In some embodiments, if the top 1 predicted beam is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may maintain the measured L1-RSRP of the top 1 predicted beam.

[0198] Further, as shown in the FIG. 5A (which illustrates a signaling flow 500A for communicating information about the number of predicted beams in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure) , the terminal device 110 may be triggered by network device 120 with a further measurement report (e.g., aperiodic measurement report, also referred to as the second measurement report) to report the measured L1-RSRP of the top 1 predicted beam.

[0199] In some embodiments, when the value of Kp is larger than 1 (e.g., 4) , 4 CRIp fields and 4 RSRP fields may be included in the measurement report.

[0200] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report IDs of the top 4 predicted beams in the 4 CRIp fields. Further, for each one of the top 4 predicted beams, the terminal device 110 may determine whether it is a measured beam. Specifically, if it is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may maintain its measured L1-RSRP.

[0201] As shown in the FIG. 5B (which illustrates a signaling flow 500B for communicating information about the number of predicted beams in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure) , the terminal device 110 may be triggered by network device 120 with a further measurement report to report the measured L1-RSRP (s) have been maintained (e.g., aperiodic measurement report, also referred to as the second measurement report) . For the further measurement report, the measured L1-RSRP (s) determined based on a set of measurement beams (i.e., beam-1 and beam-10) and the measured L1-RSRP (s) that the terminal device 110 has been maintained may be reported in the same measurement report. Further, whether the measured L1-RSRP (s) that the terminal device 110 has been maintained are reported may be indicated by network device 120 through an RRC / MAC CE / DCI signaling.

[0202] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine measured beam (s)  for the further measurement report based on at least one of the following: (predicted) beam (s) reported in the most recent measurement report; or based on the reported (predicted) beam (s) , where the (predicted) beam (s) having maintained measured L1-RSRPs are excluded.

[0203] For a measurement report, if the terminal device 110 maintains at least one measured L1-RSRP, the measurement report may occupies CPU (s) (at least the CPU (s) occupied by L1-RSRP computation) until the last symbol of the configured or scheduled PUSCH or PUCCH carrying the maintained measured L1-RSRP (e.g., carrying a further measurement report carrying the maintained measured L1-RSRP) , or a time window (configured by network device 120 using RRC / MAC CE / DCI or based on a reported UE capability) expires.

[0204] Embodiments where the report content is determined by the terminal device 110 and the number of predicted beams to report is configured by the network device 120 will be discussed in the following.

[0205] As a general rule, the measurement report is configured to report ‘ID of predicted beam and quality of predicted beam’ , and the measurement report comprises of two parts: Part 1 and Part 2 (i.e., the first part and the second part) , where Part 1 comprises ID of predicted beam and Part 2 comprises quality of predicted beam. Further, if the predicted beam is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report measured L1-RSRP of the predicted beam in Part 2, and if the predicted beam is not a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report nothing (for the predicted beam) in Part 2.

[0206] In this way, when the predicted beam is a measured beam, the corresponding L1-RSRP can be reported to network device 120 in time to avoid unnecessary beam measurement (or reduce latency of finding the best beam) . Further, when the predicted beam is not a measured beam (or the terminal device 110 does not obtain L1-RSRP of the predicted beam) , terminal device 110does not need to report any information (e.g., the quality-related information) to the network device 120. This reduces unnecessary measurement reporting resource.

[0207] In operation, the terminal device 110 receives 410 first control information of a first measurement report from a network device 120, first control information of a first measurement report. Then, the terminal device 110 determines 420 at least one predicted beam based on a set of measurement results of a set of measured beams and transmit a  first measurement report to the network device 120, where the first measurement report comprises a first part and a second part. In particular, at least one identifier of the at least one predicted beam is comprised in the first part, and further, for a predicted beam of the at least one predicted beam, if the predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beams, a measurement result of the predicted beam is comprised in the second part.

[0208] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one identifier may be based on at least one of the following: at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or measurement results of predicted beams of the at least one predicted beam.

[0209] In some embodiments, the measurement results comprised in the first measurement report may be indicated by absolute quality values of the measurement results. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the measurement results comprised in the first measurement report may be indicated by an absolute quality value and at least one differential quality value.

[0210] In order to better understand the above example processes, more details are further discussed with reference to below embodiments. As a general rule, the terminal device 110 is triggered by network device 120 with a measurement report, which is configured to report ID of predicted beam and quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of predicted beam, e.g., the report content is configured as ‘CRIp-RSRP’ , where the ‘CRIp’ (or CRIp field) indicates the ID (e.g., CRI, SSBRI) of a predicted beam, and the ‘RSRP’ (or RSRP field) indicates the quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of a (predicted) beam. As a result, the measurement report may comprise at least the CRIp field and the RSRP field.

[0211] In some embodiments, the measurement report is associated with (or the terminal device 110 is configured with) a set of measured beams (i.e., Set B) and a set of predicted beams (i.e., Set A) . Where the set of measured beams is a subset of the set of predicted beams, and the terminal device 110 only measures the beams in the set of measured beams.

[0212] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine (measured) L1-RSRPs of the set of measured beams (i.e., Set B) .

[0213] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine probabilities corresponding to all predicted beams in the set of predicted beams based on the L1-RSRPs and an AI / ML model. Optionally, the terminal device 110 may determine only one predicted beam (from the set of predicted beams) based on the L1-RSRPs and the AI / ML model.

[0214] In some embodiments, if the number of predicted beams to report configured by network device 120 is represented to be Kp and Kp is equal to 1, the measurement report may include one CRIp field and one RSRP field. Specifically, the measurement report comprises of two parts, where the Part 1 may comprise the one CRIp field and the Part 2 may comprise the one RSRP field.

[0215] For example, the mapping order of the CRIp field and RSRP field (or the structure of the measurement report) may be shown as below table 8.

[0216] Table 8

[0217] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report ID of the top 1 predicted beam in the CRIp field in the Part 1.

[0218] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the top 1 predicted beam is a measured beam. Specifically, if the top 1 predicted beam is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report measured L1-RSRP of the top 1 predicted beam in the RSRP field in the Part 2, and if the top 1 predicted beam is not a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report nothing in the Part 2, i.e., the RSRP field is not included in the Part 2.

[0219] In some embodiments, when the value of Kp is larger than 1, e.g., 4, 4 CRIp fields and 4 RSRP fields may be included in the measurement report. Specifically, the measurement report comprises of two parts, where the Part 1 may comprise the 4 CRIp fields and the Part 2 may comprise the 4 RSRP fields.

[0220] For example, the mapping order of the 4 CRIp fields and 4 RSRP fields (or the structure of the measurement report) may be shown as below table 9.

[0221] Table 9

[0222] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one identifier field may be based on at least one of the following:

[0223] ● at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or

[0224] ● measurement results of predicted beams of the at least one predicted beam.

[0225] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one quality field may be based on at least one of the following:

[0226] ● a mapping order of the at least one identifier field,

[0227] ● at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or

[0228] ● the measurement results.

[0229] The terminal device 110 may report IDs of the top 4 predicted beams in the 4 CRIp fields in the Part 1. For each one of the top 4 predicted beams, the terminal device 110 may determine whether it is a measured beam. Specifically, if it is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report its measured L1-RSRP in a RSRP field in the Part 2.

[0230] Further, the measured L1-RSRP may be reported based on an absolute L1-RSRP (when it is the largest measured L1-RSRP) or differential L1-RSRP. In some embodiments, at least one quality value indicated by the at least one quality field is indicated by at least one absolute quality value of the at least one predicted beam. Alternatively, in some embodiments, at least part of the at least one quality value may be indicated by an absolute quality value and one or more differential quality values.

[0231] In some embodiments, if it is not a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report nothing (for the predicted beam) in the Part 2.

[0232] For example, assuming that the top 4 predicted beams are beam-1, beam-5, beam-8 and beam-10. In this case, the mapping order of the 4 CRIp fields and 2 RSRP fields (or the structure of the measurement report) may be shown as below table 10.

[0233] Table 10

[0234] Embodiments where the number of predicted beams to report is determined by the terminal device 110 will be discussed in the following.

[0235] In operation, the terminal device 110 receives 410 first control information of a first measurement report from a network device 120, first control information of a first measurement report. Then, the terminal device 110 determines 420 at least one predicted beam based on a set of measurement results of a set of measured beams and transmit a first measurement report to the network device 120, where the first measurement report comprises a first part and a second part. In particular, the number of the at least one predicted beam is comprised in the first part, and at least one identifier of the at least one predicted beam is comprised in the second part. Further, for a predicted beam of the at least one predicted beam, if the predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beams, a measurement result of the predicted beam may be comprised in the second part.

[0236] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the first measurement report comprises a first part, a second part and a third part. In particular, the number of the at least one predicted beam may be comprised in the first part, at least one identifier of the at least one predicted beam may be comprised in the second part. Further, for a predicted beam of the at least one predicted beam, if the predicted beam is comprised in the set of measured beams, a measurement result of the predicted beam may be comprised in the  third part.

[0237] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one identifier may be based on at least one of the following: at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or measurement results of predicted beams of the at least one predicted beam.

[0238] In some embodiments, the measurement results comprised in the first measurement report may be indicated by absolute quality values of the measurement results. Alternatively, in some embodiments, the measurement results comprised in the first measurement report may be indicated by an absolute quality value and at least one differential quality value.

[0239] In order to better understand the above example processes, more details are further discussed with reference to below embodiments.

[0240] The measurement report is configured to report ‘the number of predicted beams to report, ID of predicted beam and quality of predicted beam’ . And the measurement report comprises of three parts: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. Further, Part 1 comprises the number of predicted beams to report, Part 2 comprises ID of predicted beam and Part 3 comprises quality of predicted beam.

[0241] In operation, if the predicted beam is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report measured L1-RSRP of the predicted beam in Part 3, if the predicted beam is not a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report nothing (for the predicted beam) in Part 3.

[0242] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the measurement report comprises of two parts: Part 1 and Part 2. Further, Part 1 comprises the number of predicted beams to report, and Part 2 comprises ID of predicted beam and quality of predicted beam.

[0243] On operation, if the predicted beam is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report measured L1-RSRP of the predicted beam in Part 2, and if the predicted beam is not a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report nothing (for the predicted beam) in Part 2.

[0244] In this way, when the predicted beam is a measured beam, the corresponding L1-RSRP may be reported to network device 120 in time to avoid unnecessary beam measurement (or reduce latency of finding the best beam) . Further, when the predicted beam is not a measured beam (or the terminal device 110 does not obtain L1-RSRP of the  predicted beam) , the terminal device 110 does not need to report any information (e.g., the quality-related information) to the network device 120. This reduces unnecessary measurement reporting resource.

[0245] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 is triggered by network device 120 with a measurement report, which is configured to report the number of predicted beams to report (may also not be explicitly indicated) , ID of predicted beam and quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of predicted beam, e.g., the report content is configured as ‘Kp-CRIp -RSRP’ (or ‘CRIp -RSRP’ ) . Further, the ‘Kp’ (or Kp field) indicates the number of predicted beams to report, and the ‘CRIp’ (or CRIp field) indicates the ID (e.g., CRI, SSBRI) of a predicted beam. Where the ‘RSRP’ (or RSRP field) indicates the quality (e.g., L1-RSRP) of a (predicted) beam. The measurement report comprises at least the Kp field, the CRIp field and the RSRP field.

[0246] In some embodiments, the measurement report is associated with (or the terminal device 110 is configured with) a set of measured beams (i.e., Set B) and a set of predicted beams (i.e., Set A) . Further, the set of measured beams is a subset of the set of predicted beams, and the terminal device 110 only measures the beams in the set of measured beams.

[0247] The terminal device 110 may determine (measured) L1-RSRPs of the set of measured beams (i.e., Set B) . Then, the terminal device 110 may determine probabilities corresponding to all predicted beams in the set of predicted beams based on the L1-RSRPs and an AI / ML model. Optionally, the terminal device 110 may determine only one predicted beam (from the set of predicted beams) based on the L1-RSRPs and the AI / ML model.

[0248] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine a set of predicted beams to report based on the probabilities and some predefined thresholds or rules / conditions related to probability.

[0249] In some embodiments, the measurement report may comprise of three parts. Further, the Part 1 may comprise the Kp field, the Part 2 may comprise the CRIp field, and the Part 3 may comprise the RSRP field.

[0250] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the number of predicted beams to report is 4, the mapping order of the 1 Kp field, 4 CRIp fields and 4 RSRP fields (or the structure of the measurement report) may be shown as below table 11.

[0251] Table 11

[0252] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report IDs of the top 4 predicted beams in the 4 CRIp fields in the Part 2.

[0253] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one identifier field may be based on at least one of the following:

[0254] ● at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or

[0255] ● measurement results of predicted beams of the at least one predicted beam.

[0256] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one quality field may be based on at least one of the following:

[0257] ● a mapping order of the at least one identifier field,

[0258] ● at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or

[0259] ● the measurement results.

[0260] In some embodiments, for each one of the top 4 predicted beams, the terminal device 110 may determine whether it is a measured beam. Specifically, if it is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report its measured L1-RSRP in a RSRP field in the Part 3. Further, the measured L1-RSRP may be reported based on an absolute (when it is the largest measured L1-RSRP) or differential L1-RSRP. Further, if it is not a measured  beam, the terminal device 110 may report nothing (for the predicted beam) in the Part 3.

[0261] In some embodiments, the top 4 predicted beams are beam-1, beam-5, beam-8 and beam-10. The relationship between their corresponding probabilities is: beam-1 >beam-5 > beam-8 > beam-10. In this case, the mapping order of the 1 Kp field, 4 CRIp fields and 2 RSRP fields (or the structure of the measurement report) may be shown as below table 12.

[0262] Table 12

[0263] In some embodiments, at least one quality value indicated by the at least one quality field is indicated by at least one absolute quality value of the at least one predicted beam.

[0264] Alternatively, in some embodiments, at least part of the at least one quality value may be indicated by an absolute quality value and one or more differential quality values.

[0265] Alternatively, in some embodiments, the measurement report may comprise of two parts, where the Part 1 may comprise the Kp field, and the Part 2 may comprise the CRIp field and / or the RSRP field.

[0266] For example, when the terminal device 110 determines the number of predicted beams to report is 4, the mapping order of the 1 Kp field, 4 CRIp fields and 4 RSRP fields (or the structure of the measurement report) may be shown as below table 13 and table 14.

[0267] Table 13

[0268] Table 14

[0269] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one identifier field may be based on at least one of the following:

[0270] ● at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or

[0271] ● measurement results of predicted beams of the at least one predicted beam.

[0272] In some embodiments, a mapping order of the at least one quality field may be  based on at least one of the following:

[0273] ● a mapping order of the at least one identifier field,

[0274] ● at least one probability of the at least one predicted beam, or

[0275] ● the measurement results.

[0276] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may report IDs of the top 4 predicted beams in the 4 CRIp fields in the Part 2. Further, for each one of the top 4 predicted beams, the terminal device 110 may determine whether it is a measured beam. Specifically, if it is a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report its measured L1-RSRP in a RSRP field in the Part 2.

[0277] In some embodiments, at least one quality value indicated by the at least one quality field is indicated by at least one absolute quality value of the at least one predicted beam.

[0278] Alternatively, in some embodiments, at least part of the at least one quality value may be indicated by an absolute quality value and one or more differential quality values.

[0279] In some embodiments, if it is not a measured beam, the terminal device 110 may report the quality-related information in a RSRP field in the Part 2.

[0280] For example, assuming that the top 4 predicted beams are beam-1, beam-5, beam-8 and beam-10. In this case, the mapping order of the 1 Kp field, 4 CRIp fields and 4 RSRP fields (or the structure of the measurement report) may be shown as below table 15 and table 16.

[0283] Embodiments where the inference procedure at the terminal device 110 is verified will be discussed in the following.

[0284] In operation, the terminal device 110 receives 410 first control information of a first measurement report from a network device 120, first control information of a first measurement report. Then, the terminal device 110 determines 420 at least one predicted beam based on a set of measurement results of a set of measured beams.

[0285] Then, the terminal device 110 may perform at least one measurement on the at least one predicted beam to obtain at least one measurement result. If one or more measurement results are lower than or equal to a threshold, the terminal device 110 may transmit one of the following to the network device 120:

[0286] ● a second indication indicating a measurement result of the at least one predicted beam fails to satisfy a quality requirement,

[0287] ● the one or more measurement results,

[0288] ● one or more respective identifiers of predicted beam associated with the one or more measurement results, or

[0289] ● a maximum measurement result of the at least one measurement result.

[0290] In order to better understand the above example processes, more details are further discussed with reference to below embodiments.

[0291] In the second measurement report, if N (configured by network device 120 using RRC / MAC CE / DCI or based on a UE capability) measured beam(s) satisfy the following condition: the measured L1-RSRP of the measured beam is lower than or equal to a first threshold, the terminal device 110 may report at least one of the following:

[0292] ● a second indication. The second indication indicates that the actual measured quality of the predicted beam is not good, or whether the above event is satisfied;

[0293] ● the ID or / and measured L1-RSRP of the beam satisfying or not satisfying the above condition; or

[0294] ● the ID or / and measured L1-RSRP of the beam having the largest measured L1-RSRP.
