Abstract

Various aspects of the present disclosure relate to communication in RIS-assisted network. A base station may receive, from a UE, first information related to an operating mode of a STAR RIS. The base station may determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS based on the first information, and transmit a configuration of the operating mode to the STAR RIS. In this way, the STAR RIS may perform an operation based on the configuration and thus the management of the STAR RIS may be carried out.

[0080] With rapid development of meta-surfaces and corresponding fabrication technologies, RISs and their diverse variants have emerged as promising techniques for 6G wireless networks. Generally speaking, RISs are two-dimensional (2D) structures comprising a large number of low-cost reconfigurable elements. By employing a smart controller (e.g., a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) ) attached to the RIS, both a phase and an amplitude of these reconfigurable elements can be beneficially controlled, thus reconfiguring propagation of incident wireless signals and realizing a “smart radio environment (SRE) ” . Nevertheless, it is noticed that existing research contributions mainly considered employment of reflecting-only RISs, which brings extra topological constraints to a wireless system. Specifically, to receive signals from the reflecting-only RISs, users have to be on the same side as a transmitter. To mitigate this drawback and to facilitate more flexible system designs of the RIS-assisted network, a concept of a STAR RIS is proposed.

[0081] From a manufacturing perspective, the proposed STAR RISs can be implemented using various meta-surface-based designs. For example, a dynamic meta-surface achieving dynamic manipulation of both reflection and penetration in a highly transparent package has been proposed. Other successful implementations achieving manipulation of transmission and reflection are also reported, including graphene-based dynamic meta-surfaces and multi-layer meta-surfaces.

[0082] By adjusting amplitude coefficients used for both transmission and reflection, each STAR RIS element can operate in a full transmission mode (also referred to as a T mode herein) , a full reflection mode (also referred to as a R mode herein) , or a simultaneous transmission and reflection mode (also referred to as a T&R mode herein) . However, it is still unclear how to use these operating modes of the STAR RIS.

[0083] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution of supporting management of a STAR RIS. In the solution, a base station may receive, from a UE, first information related to an operating mode of a RIS (i.e., a STAR RIS) supporting simultaneous transmission and reflection. The base station may determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS based on the first information and transmit a configuration of the operating mode to the STAR RIS. In this way, the STAR RIS may perform an operation based on the configuration and thus the management of the STAR RIS may be carried out.

[0084] Principles of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to some embodiments. It is to be understood that these embodiments are described only for the purpose of illustration and help those skilled in the art to understand and implement the present disclosure, without suggesting any limitation as to the scope of the disclosure. The disclosure described herein may be implemented in various manners other than the ones described below.

[0093] The one or more UEs may be dispersed throughout a geographic region of the wireless communications system 100. A UE may include or may be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a remote unit, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other suitable terminology. In some implementations, the UE  may be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, among other examples. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE may be referred to as an Internet-of-things (IoT) device, an Internet-of-everything (IoE) device, or machine-type communication (MTC) device, among other examples. In some implementations, a UE may be stationary in the wireless communications system 100. In some other implementations, a UE may be mobile in the wireless communications system 100.

[0094] The one or more UEs may be devices in different forms or having different capabilities. Some examples of UEs are illustrated in FIG. 1. A UE may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as the network entities 102, other UEs, or network equipment (e.g., the core network 106, the packet data network 108, a relay device, an integrated access and backhaul (IAB) node, or another network equipment) , as shown in FIG. 1. Additionally or alternatively, a UE may support communication with other network entities 102 or UEs, which may act as relays in the wireless communications system 100.

[0095] A UE may also be able to support wireless communication directly with other UEs over a communication link 114. For example, a UE may support wireless communication directly with another UE over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link. In some implementations, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) deployments, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) deployments, or cellular-V2X deployments, the communication link 114 may be referred to as an SL. For example, a UE may support wireless communication directly with another UE over a PC5 interface.

[0096] A network entity 102 may support communications with the core network 106, or with another network entity 102, or both. For example, a network entity 102 may interface with the core network 106 through one or more backhaul links 116 (e.g., via an S1, N2, N2, or another network interface) . The network entities 102 may communicate with each other over the backhaul links 116 (e.g., via an X2, Xn, or another network interface) . In some implementations, the network entities 102 may communicate with each other directly (e.g., between the network entities 102) . In some other implementations, the network entities 102 may communicate with each other or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 106) . In some implementations, one or more network entities 102 may include subcomponents, such as an access network entity, which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC) . An ANC may communicate with the one or  more UEs through one or more other access network transmission entities, which may be referred to as a radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmission-reception points (TRPs) .

[0097] As an example, the network entity 102-1 may provide a cell 112-1 and the network entity 102-2 may provide a cell 112-2. It is to be understood that each of the network entities 102-1 and 102-2 may provide more cells (not shown) .

[0098] In an example, the network entity may be a satellite, for example, the network entity 102-3. The network entity 102-3 may have full or part of an eNB / gNB on board. The communication link 110 between the satellite 102-3 and the UE 105, the communication link 116 between the satellite 102-3 and the network entity 102-2, and the communication link 116 between the network entity 102-2 and the core network 106 may be used for a non-terrestrial network (NTN) transparent mode. The communication link 110 between the satellite 102-3 and the UE 105, and the communication link 116 between the satellite 102-3 (with a base station on board) and the core network 106 may be used for a NTN regenerative mode.

[0099] In some implementations, a network entity 102 may be configured in a disaggregated architecture, which may be configured to utilize a protocol stack physically or logically distributed among two or more network entities 102, such as an IAB network, an open RAN (O-RAN) (e.g., a network configuration sponsored by the O-RAN Alliance) , or a virtualized RAN (vRAN) (e.g., a cloud RAN (C-RAN) ) . For example, a network entity 102 may include one or more of a central unit (CU) , a distributed unit (DU) , a radio unit (RU) , a RAN intelligent controller (RIC) (e.g., a near-real time RIC (Near-RT RIC) , a non-real time RIC (Non-RT RIC) ) , a service management and orchestration (SMO) system, or any combination thereof.

[0100] An RU may also be referred to as a radio head, a smart radio head, a remote radio head (RRH) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , or a TRP. One or more components of the network entities 102 in a disaggregated RAN architecture may be co-located, or one or more components of the network entities 102 may be located in distributed locations (e.g., separate physical locations) . In some implementations, one or more network entities 102 of a disaggregated RAN architecture may be implemented as virtual units (e.g., a virtual CU (VCU) , a virtual DU (VDU) , a virtual RU (VRU) ) .

[0101] Split of functionality between a CU, a DU, and an RU may be flexible and may support different functionalities depending upon which functions (e.g., network layer  functions, protocol layer functions, baseband functions, radio frequency functions, and any combinations thereof) are performed at a CU, a DU, or an RU. For example, a functional split of a protocol stack may be employed between a CU and a DU such that the CU may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the DU may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. In some implementations, the CU may host upper protocol layer (e.g., a layer 3 (L3) , a layer 2 (L2) ) functionality and signaling (e.g., radio resource control (RRC) , service data adaption protocol (SDAP) , packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) ) . The CU may be connected to one or more DUs or RUs, and the one or more DUs or RUs may host lower protocol layers, such as a layer 1 (L1) (e.g., physical (PHY) layer) or an L2 (e.g., radio link control (RLC) layer, medium access control (MAC) layer) functionality and signaling, and may each be at least partially controlled by the CU 160.

[0102] Additionally or alternatively, a functional split of the protocol stack may be employed between a DU and an RU such that the DU may support one or more layers of the protocol stack and the RU may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. The DU may support one or multiple different cells (e.g., via one or more RUs) . In some implementations, a functional split between a CU and a DU, or between a DU and an RU may be within a protocol layer (e.g., some functions for a protocol layer may be performed by one of a CU, a DU, or an RU, while other functions of the protocol layer are performed by a different one of the CU, the DU, or the RU) .

[0103] A CU may be functionally split further into CU control plane (CU-CP) and CU user plane (CU-UP) functions. A CU may be connected to one or more DUs via a midhaul communication link (e.g., F1, F1-c, F1-u) , and a DU may be connected to one or more RUs via a fronthaul communication link (e.g., open fronthaul (FH) interface) . In some implementations, a midhaul communication link or a fronthaul communication link may be implemented in accordance with an interface (e.g., a channel) between layers of a protocol stack supported by respective network entities 102 that are in communication via such communication links.

[0104] The core network 106 may support user authentication, access authorization, tracking, connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 106 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) , or a 5G core (5GC) , which may include a core network element 109. The core network element 109 may be a control plane entity that  manages access and mobility (e.g., an LMF, a mobility management entity (MME) , an access and mobility management functions (AMF) ) or a user plane entity that routes packets or interconnects to external networks (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW) , a Packet Data Network (PDN) gateway (P-GW) , or a user plane function (UPF) ) . In some implementations, the control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management (e.g., data bearers, signal bearers, etc. ) for the one or more UEs served by the one or more network entities 102 associated with the core network 106.

[0105] The core network 106 may communicate with the packet data network 108 over one or more backhaul links 116 (e.g., via an S1, N2, N2, or another network interface) . The packet data network 108 may include an application server 118. In some implementations, one or more UEs may communicate with the application server 118. A UE may establish a session (e.g., a protocol data unit (PDU) session, or the like) with the core network 106 via a network entity 102. The core network 106 may route traffic (e.g., control information, data, and the like) between the UE and the application server 118 using the established session (e.g., the established PDU session) . The PDU session may be an example of a logical connection between the UE and the core network 106 (e.g., one or more network functions of the core network 106) .

[0106] In the wireless communications system 100, the network entities 102 and the UEs may use resources of the wireless communications system 100 (e.g., time resources (e.g., symbols, slots, subframes, frames, or the like) or frequency resources (e.g., subcarriers, carriers) ) to perform various operations (e.g., wireless communications) . In some implementations, the network entities 102 and the UEs may support different resource structures. For example, the network entities 102 and the UEs may support different frame structures. In some implementations, such as in 4G, the network entities 102 and the UEs may support a single frame structure. In some other implementations, such as in 5G and among other suitable radio access technologies, the network entities 102 and the UEs may support various frame structures (i.e., multiple frame structures) . The network entities 102 and the UEs may support various frame structures based on one or more numerologies.

[0107] One or more numerologies may be supported in the wireless communications system 100, and a numerology may include a subcarrier spacing and a cyclic prefix. A  first numerology (e.g., μ=0) may be associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. In some implementations, the first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with the first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may utilize one slot per subframe. A second numerology (e.g., μ=1) may be associated with a second subcarrier spacing (e.g., 30 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A third numerology (e.g., μ=2) may be associated with a third subcarrier spacing (e.g., 60 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix or an extended cyclic prefix. A fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) may be associated with a fourth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 120 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A fifth numerology (e.g., μ=4) may be associated with a fifth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 240 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix.

[0108] A time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to frames (also referred to as radio frames) . Each frame may have a duration, for example, a 10 millisecond (ms) duration. In some implementations, each frame may include multiple subframes. For example, each frame may include 10 subframes, and each subframe may have a duration, for example, a 1ms duration. In some implementations, each frame may have the same duration. In some implementations, each subframe of a frame may have the same duration.

[0109] Additionally or alternatively, a time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to slots. For example, a subframe may include a number (e.g., quantity) of slots. The number of slots in each subframe may also depend on the one or more numerologies supported in the wireless communications system 100. For instance, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth numerologies (i.e., μ=0, μ=1, μ=2, μ=3, μ=4) associated with respective subcarrier spacings of 15 kHz, 30 kHz, 60 kHz, 120 kHz, and 240 kHz may utilize a single slot per subframe, two slots per subframe, four slots per subframe, eight slots per subframe, and 16 slots per subframe, respectively. Each slot may include a number (e.g., quantity) of symbols (e.g., OFDM symbols) . In some implementations, the number (e.g., quantity) of slots for a subframe may depend on a numerology. For a normal cyclic prefix, a slot may include 14 symbols. For an extended cyclic prefix (e.g., applicable for 60 kHz subcarrier spacing) , a slot may include 12 symbols. The relationship between the number of symbols per slot, the number of slots per subframe, and the number of slots per frame for a normal cyclic prefix and an extended cyclic prefix may depend on a numerology. It should be understood that  reference to a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may be used interchangeably between subframes and slots.

[0110] In the wireless communications system 100, an electromagnetic (EM) spectrum may be split, based on frequency or wavelength, into various classes, frequency bands, frequency channels, etc. By way of example, the wireless communications system 100 may support one or multiple operating frequency bands, such as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) , FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) , FR3 (7.125 GHz –24.25 GHz) , FR4 (52.6 GHz –114.25 GHz) , FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz –71 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz –300 GHz) . In some implementations, the network entities 102 and the UEs 104 may perform wireless communications over one or more of the operating frequency bands. In some implementations, FR1 may be used by the network entities 102 and the UEs, among other equipment or devices for cellular communications traffic (e.g., control information, data) . In some implementations, FR2 may be used by the network entities 102 and the UEs, among other equipment or devices for short-range, high data rate capabilities.

[0111] FR1 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least three numerologies) . For example, FR1 may be associated with a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) , which includes 15 kHz subcarrier spacing; a second numerology (e.g., μ=1) , which includes 30 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing. FR2 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least 2 numerologies) . For example, FR2 may be associated with a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) , which includes 120 kHz subcarrier spacing.

[0112] With reference to FIG. 1, the RIS 103 may receive a signal from the network device 102 (e.g., the network device 102-1) and forward the signal to a UE (e.g., the UE 101) . In some embodiments, the RIS 103 may comprise a plurality of RIS elements (also referred to as elements herein) and a RIS controller (also referred to as a controller herein) for controlling the RIS elements. In some embodiments, the RIS elements of the RIS 103 may be passive with a reflection mode or with a transmission mode or with both a reflection mode and a transmission mode. Reflection and / or transmission coefficients (also referred to as coefficients herein) of the RIS element may be set by the RIS controller, and the RIS controller may have a communication module with a node (also referred to  as a control node herein) , either a BS or a UE, to receive the coefficients. It is to be understood that although only one RIS is shown in FIG. 1, more RISs may be comprised in the wireless communications system 100. In some embodiments, the coefficients may comprise amplitude coefficients and / or phase-shift coefficients.

[0113] A STAR RIS is a tunable surface that integrates transmission (may be also called as refraction) and reflection functions. A wireless signal incident upon the STAR RIS can be simultaneously transmitted and reflected into two sides with modified angles. There are various tunable surface designs that are potential candidates for realizing the STAR RIS. In terms of a periodic structure, STAR RIS hardware implementations can be loosely divided into two categories, namely, patch-array-based implementations and metasurface-based implementations. Patch-array-based implementations consist of periodic cells with sizes on the order of a few centimetres. Because of their relatively large sizes, each cell (e.g., patch) can be made tunable by incorporating positive–intrinsic–negative (PIN) diodes or delay lines. By contrast, metasurface-based implementations have periodic cells on the order of a few millimetres, possibly micrometres, and even molecular sizes. Hence, these implementations require more sophisticated controls of their EM properties, such as conductivity and permittivity. The candidate materials include but not limited to smart glass, graphene, etc.

[0114] By adjusting amplitude coefficients used for both transmission and reflection, each STAR RIS element can operate in the T, R and T&R modes. By exploiting such adjustment capabilities, at least three operating modes may be used to deploy the STAR RIS. FIG. 2 illustrates a diagram 200 illustrating examples of possible operating modes of a STAR RIS in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented.

[0115] As shown in FIG. 2, a reference sign 210 indicates an energy splitting (ES) mode. In the ES mode, all elements of the STAR RIS are assumed to operate in the T&R mode. For given transmission and reflection amplitude coefficients, the signals incident upon each element are split into transmitted and reflected signals having different energy. In a practical implementation, amplitude coefficients and phase-shift coefficients  of each element for transmission and reflection may be optimized jointly for achieving diverse design objectives in wireless networks.

[0116] As shown in FIG. 2, a reference sign 220 indicates a surface splitting (SS) mode (may also be called as a mode switching (MS) mode) . In the SS mode, all elements  of the STAR RIS are partitioned into two or more groups. Specifically, one group contains one or more elements that operate in the T mode, while the other group contains one or more elements operating in the R mode. It is possible to have another group, comprising of one or more elements without any phase shift. The surface may be split into many groups, potentially serving different user devices. In the SS mode, the STAR RIS may be viewed as being composed of a conventional reflecting-only RIS and a transmitting-only RIS of reduced sizes. In the SS mode, element-wise mode selection and corresponding transmission and reflection phase-shift coefficients may be optimized jointly. The drawback is that under the SS mode, transmission and reflection gain may be reduced since only a subset of the elements are selected for transmission and reflection.

[0117] As shown in FIG. 2, a reference sign 230 indicates a time switching (TS) mode. In the TS mode, the STAR RIS employing the TS mode periodically switches all elements between the T mode and the R mode in orthogonal time slots (referred to as T period and R period herein) . The fraction of time allocated to fully transmitting and fully reflecting signals may be optimized to achieve a balance between communication qualities of front and back sides of the STAR RIS. Compared to the ES and SS modes, an advantage of the TS mode is that, for a given time allocation, transmission and reflection coefficients are not coupled and thus may be optimized independently. Nevertheless, periodically switching the elements imposes stringent time synchronization requirements, thus increasing implementation complexity compared to the ES and SS modes, as well as potential power consumption.

[0118] A transition may be performed among the ES, SS, and TS modes. For example, the ES mode may achieve the TS mode by setting energy of each element with the T mode to 100%or the energy of each element with the R mode to 100%. The SS mode may also be changed to the TS mode, e.g., by setting all elements into the T mode for a period of time, and setting all elements into the R mode for another period of time.

[0119] For the various possible operating modes of the STAR RIS, it is still unclear how to determine, configure and control the operating modes of the STAR RIS.

[0120] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions of managing a STAR RIS so as to overcome the above and other potential issues. In some embodiments, the solutions of the present disclosure may be applied to a coverage enhancement scenario, which means deploying the STAR RIS in a radio access network (RAN) to provide close  to 360-degree coverage. FIG. 3 illustrates an example scenario 300 of a STAR RIS-assisted network in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. For convenience, FIG. 3 will be described in connection with the example of FIG. 1.

[0121] As shown in FIG. 3, there are the network entity 102-1, the UEs 101 and 105, and the RIS 103 in the STAR RIS-assisted network. The RIS 103 is the STAR RIS. For convenience, the RIS 103 is also referred to as a STAR RIS 103 hereinafter. The UEs 101 and 105 may indicate two types of UEs, one type is for UEs located in a front region of a surface of the STAR RIS 103, while the other type is for UEs located in a back region of the surface of the STAR RIS 103.

[0122] As shown in FIG. 3, there may be a blockage 310 between the network entity 102-1 and the UE 101, and the network entity 102-1 may be communicated with the UE 101 via the STAR RIS 103. In some scenarios, an incident signal may be transmitted from the network entity 102-1 to the STAR RIS 103. In some embodiments, all or part of the incident signal may be reflected by the STAR RIS 103 to the UE 101. In some embodiments, all or part of the incident signal may be transmitted by the STAR RIS 103 to the UE 105.

[0123] Deployment of the STAR RIS 103 may include any of the following assumptions:

[0124] - The STAR RIS 103 is deployed with a semi-static or dynamic manner, which means the STAR RIS may be rotated in horizontal or vertical directions to serve more UEs;

[0125] - The STAR RIS 103 will be used as window glasses and will focus incident EM waves to different target areas;

[0126] - The STAR RIS 103 is enabled and controlled by a network entity, a control link between the network entity and the STAR RIS is via Uu interface;

[0127] - The STAR RIS 103 works in the ES mode in an initial stage;

[0128] - The STAR RIS 103 is configured with the R mode and the T mode, whose coefficients of the R mode and T mode are set by a controller, and the controller has a communication module with the network entity to receive control information.

[0129] It is to be understood that the above coverage enhancement scenario is merely an example, and the solutions of the present disclosure may also be applied to any other suitable scenarios.

[0130] The solutions of the present disclosure will be described in connection with FIG. 4 below. FIG. 4 illustrates a signaling chart of a process 400 of communication that supports management of a STAR RIS in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. The process 400 may involve the network entity 102-1, the RIS 103, and the UE 101 as illustrated in FIG. 1. It is to be understood that the steps and the order of the steps in FIG. 4 are merely for illustration, and not for limitation. It is assumed that the network entity 102-1 and the UE 101 are communicated via the STAR RIS 103, and the STAR RIS 103 is controlled by the network entity 102-1. In this example, the UE 101 is served by the network entity 102-1 and the STAR RIS 103. It is to be understood that there may be more UEs served by the STAR RIS 103.

[0131] As shown in FIG. 4, at a step 410, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the UE 101 (e.g., directly or via the STAR RIS 103) , a request for information (for convenience, also referred to as first information herein) related to an operating mode of the STAR RIS 103. In other words, the network entity 102-1 may request the UE 101 to report the first information. It is to be noted that the network entity 102-1 may request a set of UEs to report the first information, and each UE in the set of UEs may report the corresponding first information. For illustration, only the UE 101 is shown as an example of the set of UEs.

[0132] In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit the request via a RRC signaling. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit the request via downlink control information (DCI) . In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit the request via a broadcast signaling. It is to be noted that the request may also be transmitted via any other suitable ways.

[0133] As shown in FIG. 4, at a step 420, the UE 101 may transmit the first information to the network entity 102-1 (e.g., directly or via the STAR RIS 103) . In some embodiments, the UE 101 may transmit a response to the request comprising the first information. In some embodiments, the UE 101 may transmit the first information to the network entity 102-1 via a UE assistance information message.

[0134] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise information of a traffic or service of the UE 101. In some embodiments, the information of the traffic or service of the UE 101 may comprise a type or pattern of the traffic or service. In some embodiments, the information of the traffic or service of the UE 101 may comprise priority of the traffic or service. In some embodiments, the information of the traffic or service of the UE 101 may comprise latency or QoS requirement for the traffic or service.

[0135] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise location-related information. In some embodiments for the location-related information, the first information may comprise information of a location of the UE 101. In some embodiments, the information of the location of the UE 101 may comprise accurate location information of the UE 101, e.g., latitude and longitude coordinates, global positioning system (GPS) positioning information, etc. Alternatively, the information of the location of the UE 101 may comprise approximate location information of the UE 101, e.g., a cell edge, a cell center, etc.

[0136] In some embodiments for the location-related information, the first information may comprise information of a distance between the UE 101 and the STAR RIS 103. In some embodiments, the information of the distance may comprise a value of the distance, i.e., a specific distance. In some embodiments, the information of the distance may comprise a level or degree of the distance, e.g., near, medium, far, etc.

[0137] For example, the network entity 102-1 may broadcast information of a location of the STAR RIS 103. The UE 101 may determine the distance between the UE 101 and the STAR RIS 103 based on the location of the STAR RIS 103 and the location of the UE 101, and transmit the information of the distance between the UE 101 and the STAR RIS 103 to the network entity 102-1.

[0138] In another example, the network entity 102-1 may request the UE 101 to report the information of the location of the UE 101. Based on the information of the location reported by the UE 101 and the location of the STAR RIS 103, the network entity 102-1 may determine the information of the distance between the UE 101 and the STAR RIS 103.

[0139] In some embodiments for the location-related information, the first information may comprise information of an angle between the UE 101 and the STAR  RIS 103. In some embodiments, the information of the angle may comprise a horizontal angle, a vertical angle, an AoA, or an AoD, etc.

[0143] For example, the network entity 102-1 may broadcast the information of the location of the STAR RIS 103. The UE 101 may determine a location of the UE 101 with respect to the STAR RIS 103, and transmit the information of the location of the UE 101 with respect to the STAR RIS 103 to the network entity 102-1.

[0144] In another example, the network entity 102-1 may broadcast the information of the location of the STAR RIS 103. The UE 101 may respond, to the network entity 102-1, the information of the location of the UE 101 with respect to the STAR RIS 103, e.g., whether the UE 101 is in the front or back or left or right region of the STAR RIS 103.

[0148] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise information of interference signal strength of the UE 101. In some embodiments, the information of the interference signal strength of the UE 101 may comprise co-tier inference signal strength. In some embodiments, the information of the interference signal strength of the UE 101 may comprise cross-tier inference signal strength.

[0149] In some embodiments, the first information may comprise a set of preferences on the operating mode. In some embodiments, the first information may comprise a set of durations associated with the set of preferences on the operating mode. For example, the network entity 102-1 may request the UE 101 to report a preference on the operating  mode during a pre-configured duration (or time window) . The UE 101 may respond, to the network entity 102-1, one or more preferences and a corresponding duration of each preference, e.g., the ES mode with the first 10s and the SS mode with the second 5s. In another example, the network entity 102-1 may request a set of UEs comprising UE#1, UE#2 and UE#3 to report a preference on the operating mode. UE#1 may report the ES mode with the first 10s and the SS mode with the second 5s, UE#2 may report the ES mode with the first 10s and the TS mode with the second 5s, and UE#3 may report the SS mode with the first 10s and the TS mode with the second 5s.

[0150] It is to be noted that the first information may comprise any combinations of the above information or any other suitable information or information combinations.

[0151] Continuing to refer to FIG. 4, at a step 430, the network entity 102-1 may determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 based on the first information. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 based on any one or more of the first information.

[0152] In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may determine, based on the information of the location of the UE 101, information (for convenience, also referred to as second information herein) comprising one or more of the following: the information of the distance between the UE 101 and the STAR RIS 103, the information of the angle between the UE 101 and the STAR RIS 103, or the information of the region in which the UE 101 is located. Based on the second information, the network entity 102-1 may determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103.

[0153] In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may determine that priority of a first traffic or service of the UE 101 located in a first region of the STAR RIS 103 is higher than priority of a second traffic or service of the UE 101 located in a second region of the STAR RIS 103 for the duration. In this case, the network entity 102-1 may determine the operating mode for the duration based on the first region.

[0154] For example, for the TS mode, the traffic priority of the UE 101 may be more important for the network entity 102-1 to make the final decision. For example, during a time period [0, 0.7T] , if the service priority of the UE 101 located on the front side of the STAR RIS 103 is higher, the network entity 102-1 may determine that the STAR RIS 103 will operate in the R mode of the TS mode during the time period [0, 0.7T] . During a time period [0.7T, T] , if the service priority of the UE 101 located on the back side of the  STAR RIS 103 is higher, the network entity 102-1 may determine that the STAR RIS 103 will operate in the T mode of the TS mode during the time period [0.7T, T] .

[0155] In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may determine whether the STAR RIS 103 needs to operate in both transmission and reflection modes. For example, the network entity 102-1 may determine whether the STAR RIS 103 needs to operate in both transmission and reflection modes based on information such as the location of the UE 101, number of UEs located in front or behind the STAR RIS 103, etc. If the STAR RIS 103 needs to operate in both transmission and reflection modes, the network entity 102-1 may determine the operating mode based on one or more of: information of a channel state of the UE 101, or transmission power of the network entity 102-1.

[0156] For example, both the ES and SS modes provide simultaneous transmission and reflection services for multiple UE scenarios. To determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103, the network entity 102-1 may first determine whether the STAR RIS 103 needs to operate in both transmission and reflection modes based on the location of the UE 101 and the number of UEs located in front or behind the STAR RIS 103. Furthermore, the network entity 102-1 may determine whether to operate in the ES or SS mode.

[0157] The ES mode is more suitable for scenarios that require high energy efficiency, hence for some scenarios with low transmission power of the network entity 102-1, and the network entity 102-1 will choose the ES mode. In some embodiments, if transmission power of the network entity 102-1 is lower than or equal to threshold power, the network entity 102-1 may determine the ES mode as the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103. If transmission power of the network entity 102-1 is higher than or equal to the threshold power, the network entity 102-1 may determine the SS mode as the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103.

[0158] In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may determine the ES or SS mode based on the information of the channel state reported by the UE 101 (e.g., RSRP, CQI, etc. ) . For a UE with low channel quality (e.g., low RSRP) , which indicates that the channel state between the UE and the network entity 102-1 is poor and path loss is severe. Therefore, STAR RIS reflection or transmission is needed to form a narrow beam to achieve finer alignment. Thus, the network entity 102-1 may choose the ES mode. For a UE with high channel quality (e.g., high RSRP) , the network entity 102-1 may determine  the SS mode providing wide beams. In some embodiments, if channel quality of the UE 101 is lower than or equal to threshold quality, the network entity 102-1 may determine the ES mode as the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103. If channel quality of the UE 101 is higher than or equal to the threshold quality, the network entity 102-1 may determine the SS mode as the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103.

[0159] In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may determine number of UEs for each of a set of operating modes during a duration, and determine, as the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103, a first operating mode in the set of operating modes that has a largest number of UEs for the duration. In this way, the network entity 102-1 may determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 according to number of UEs for a specific operating mode during a specific duration. For example, the network entity 102-1 may determine that the STAR RIS 103 operates in the ES mode with the first 10s, and the TS mode with the second 5s, etc. In a duration [t0, t1] , number of UEs preferred on the ES mode is higher than that on the SS and TS modes, and then the network entity 102-1 may determine that the STAR RIS 103 works on the ES mode during the duration [t0, t1] .

[0160] In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 based on some priori information for a location of the UE 101 under the coverage of the STAR RIS 103 (i.e., the location of the UE 101 with respect to the STAR RIS 103) . In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may request the UE 101 to report a traffic pattern and QoS requirement of each traffic, and determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 based on the received traffic pattern and QoS requirement information from the UE 101. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may request a set of UEs to report their accurate or approximate location information, and determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 based on the received location information and the number of UEs corresponding to the location information.

[0161] In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may determine number of UEs in each of a set of regions of the STAR RIS 103 for a duration, and determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 based on a region in the set of regions that has a largest number of UEs for the duration. For example, if the number of UEs in the front region of the STAR RIS 103 is higher than that in the back region of the STAR RIS 103  for a duration [t0, t1] , the network entity 102-1 may determine the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 is the TS mode, and all elements work in the R mode during the duration [t0, t1] .

[0162] Continuing to refer to FIG. 4, at a step 440, the network entity 102-1 may transmit a configuration of the operating mode to the STAR RIS 103.

[0163] In some embodiments, the operating mode may be determined as the ES mode. In some embodiments, the configuration of the ES mode may comprise information of energy split of each element of the STAR RIS 103. In some embodiments, the information of the energy split may comprise a set of values associated with the energy split, e.g., 30%for the T mode and 70%for the R mode of each element. In this way, energy split of each element is indicated explicitly. In some embodiments, the information of the energy split may comprise an index of the set of values, e.g., index#1 is for 10%T, 90%R; index#2 is for 30%T, 70%R; index#3 is for 50%T, 50%R, etc. In this way, energy split of each element is indicated implicitly.

[0164] In some embodiments, the configuration of the ES mode may comprise information of time for which the configuration of the ES mode is applied. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise a starting point of time for which the configuration is applied. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise an ending point of time for which the configuration is applied. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise a duration (or a time window) for which the configuration is applied. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise a point of time for changing the energy split of each element, e.g., changing from 30%for the T mode and 70%for the R mode of each element to 40%for the T mode and 60%for the R mode of each element. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise a point of time for changing the operating mode, e.g., changing from the ES mode to the SS mode, etc. It is to be noted that the information of the time may comprise any combinations of the above time information. It is also to be noted that the configuration of the ES mode may comprise any combinations of the above information or any other suitable information.

[0165] In some alternative or additional embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, an indication for changing the energy split of each element of the RIS. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit an  indication for changing the energy split of each element from a value to another value, e.g., from 3: 7 (T: R) to 4: 6 (T: R) . In this way, an explicit indication for the energy split may be provided. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, an indication for changing the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103, e.g., from the SS or TS mode to the ES mode, etc. In this way, an implicit indication for the energy split may be provided. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit an indication for changing power of each element from a value to another value, e.g., from 3: 7 (T: R) to 4: 6 (T: R) . In this way, an implicit indication for the energy split may also be provided.

[0166] In some embodiments, the operating mode may be determined as the SS mode. In some embodiments, the configuration of the SS mode may comprise information of elements operating in the T mode, the R mode, and a pending mode (i.e., the T or R mode) . In some embodiments, the information of elements may comprise an indication of a first set of elements operating in the T mode. In some embodiments, the information of elements may comprise an indication of a second set of elements operating in the R mode. In some embodiments, the information of elements may comprise an indication of a third set of elements operating in the pending mode. For example, the information of elements may explicitly indicate that the 1st, 2nd, and 4th elements operating in the T mode, the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th elements operating in the R mode, and the remaining elements operating in the pending mode. In another example, the information of elements may indicate a predefined rule or pattern, e.g., the first 2×2 elements operate in the T mode, the next 2×2 elements operate in the R mode, and the last 2×2 elements operate in the pending mode.

[0167] In some embodiments, the information of elements may comprise number of elements in the first set of elements. In some embodiments, the information of elements may comprise number of elements in the second set of elements. In some embodiments, the information of elements may comprise number of elements in the third set of elements. For example, the information of elements may indicate number of elements operating in the T and R modes. In another example, the information of elements may indicate number of elements operating in the R and pending modes. In still another example, the information of elements may indicate number of elements operating in the T and pending modes. It is to be noted that the information of elements may also comprise any other suitable information or combinations of information.

[0169] In some alternative or additional embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, an indication for changing number of elements operating in the T and / or R mode, e.g., changing from 16 elements for the T mode and 25 elements for the R mode to 36 elements for the T mode and 4 elements for the R mode. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, an indication for changing number of elements operating in the pending mode to the T mode. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, an indication for changing number of elements operating in the pending mode to the R mode. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, an indication for changing the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103, e.g., changing from the ES or TS mode to the SS mode, etc.

[0170] In some embodiments, the operating mode may be determined as the TS mode. In some embodiments, the configuration of the TS mode may comprise information of  time for which the STAR RIS 103 operates in the T or R mode. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise a starting point of time for which the STAR RIS 103 operates in the T or R mode. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise an ending point of time for which the STAR RIS 103 operates in the T or R mode. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise a duration for which the STAR RIS 103 operates in the T or R mode. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise a point of time for switching between the T mode and the R mode, e.g., changing from the T mode to the R mode, or changing from the R mode to the T mode. In some embodiments, the information of the time may comprise a point of time for changing the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103, e.g., changing from the ES or SS mode to the TS mode, etc. It is to be noted that the information of the time may comprise any combinations of the above time information. It is also to be noted that the configuration of the TS mode may comprise any combinations of the above information or any other suitable information.

[0171] In some alternative or additional embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, an indication of changing the point of time that the STAR RIS 103 operates in the T mode and / or the R mode. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, an indication for switching between the T mode and the R mode, e.g., changing from the T mode to the R mode, or changing from the R mode to the T mode. In this way, an explicit indication may be provided. In some embodiments, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, an indication for changing the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103, e.g., changing from the ES or SS mode to the TS mode, etc. In this way, an implicit indication may be provided.

[0172] In some embodiments, if the configuration of the operating mode is generated or completed, the network entity 102-1 may transmit the configuration of the operating mode to the STAR RIS 103. In some embodiments, if a request for the configuration of the operating mode is received from the STAR RIS 103, the network entity 102-1 may transmit the configuration of the operating mode to the STAR RIS 103. In some embodiments, if a request for a traffic or service with a priority higher than a threshold priority is received from the UE 101, the network entity 102-1 may transmit the configuration of the operating mode to the STAR RIS 103.

[0173] As shown in FIG. 4, at a step 450, the STAR RIS 103 may perform an operation based on the received configuration of the operating mode. That is, the STAR RIS 103 may determine and apply the operating mode based on the configuration.

[0174] In some embodiments, if a first traffic or service is ongoing during a first operating mode, and a second traffic or service with a priority (e.g., an emergency service or low latency requirement service) higher than a priority of the first traffic or service comes, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, a further configuration (i.e., a new configuration of the operating mode) of the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 for the second traffic or service.

[0175] In some embodiments, if the second traffic or service is to be transferred as a downlink traffic or service with a priority higher than the priority of the first traffic or service, the network entity 102-1 may determine that the second traffic or service comes. That is, if the network entity 102-1 has a downlink traffic or service with a higher priority that needs to be transferred, the network entity 102-1 may transmit the further configuration of the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103.

[0176] In some embodiments, if a first traffic or service is ongoing during a first operating mode, and a second traffic or service with a priority (e.g., an emergency service or low latency requirement service) higher than a priority of the first traffic or service is to be transferred as an uplink traffic or service, the UE 101 may transmit, to the network entity 102-1, an indication that the second traffic or service is to be transferred as the uplink traffic or service. Upon reception of such indication, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to the STAR RIS 103, the further configuration of the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103.

[0177] In some embodiments, a first set of UEs comprising the UE 101 has not completed a traffic or service but the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 is to be changed to serve a second set of UEs. In this case, the network entity 102-1 may transmit, to each UE in the first set of UEs, an indication for stopping or aborting or suspending a transmission of the traffic or service. In some embodiments, the indication may indicate a duration (or time length) for stopping or aborting or suspending the transmission of the traffic or service. In some embodiments, the indication may indicate a re-transmission or no re-transmission of segmentation data of the traffic or service upon expiry of the duration. For example, the indication may indicate re-transmitting all or part of the  segmentation data or not re-transmitting the segmentation data. In some embodiments, the indication may indicate the re-transmission of segmentation data of the traffic or service upon reception of a further indication of the re-transmission. For example, the indication may indicate waiting until another start transmission indication is received.

[0178] With reference to FIG. 4, at a step 460, the network entity 102-1 may transmit control information to the STAR RIS 103.

[0179] In some embodiments, the control information may comprise an indication of the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103. In some embodiments, the control information may explicitly indicate the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103, e.g., the ES, SS or TS mode. In some embodiments, the control information may indicate the configuration of the operating mode, and thus the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 may be implicitly indicated. For example, if the configuration of the operating mode includes energy split of each element, then the operating mode of the STAR RIS 103 may be the ES mode.

[0180] In some embodiments, the control information may comprise spatial information. In some embodiments, the spatial information may comprise beamforming information. In some embodiments, the beamforming information may comprise an indication (e.g., beam number or index) of a beam for the STAR RIS 103 to receive the control information. In some embodiments, the beamforming information may comprise an indication (e.g., beam number or index) of a beam for the reflection of the STAR RIS 103 (e.g., for reflecting data to the network entity 102-1 or the UE 101) , e.g., including a downlink reflection beam indication and an uplink reflection beam indication. In some embodiments, the beamforming information may comprise an indication (e.g., beam number or index) of a beam for the transmission (or refraction) of the STAR RIS 103 (e.g., for refracting data to the network entity 102-1 or the UE 101) , e.g., including a downlink refraction beam indication and an uplink refraction beam indication.

[0181] In some embodiments, the spatial information may comprise directivity information. In some embodiments, the directivity information may comprise an indication of a directivity type of a beam for the STAR RIS 103 to receive the control information. In some embodiments, the directivity information may comprise an indication of a directivity type of a beam for the reflection of the STAR RIS 103 (e.g., for reflecting data to the network entity 102-1 or the UE 101) , e.g., including a downlink reflection directivity type indication and an uplink reflection directivity type indication.  In some embodiments, the directivity information may comprise an indication of a directivity type of a beam for the transmission of the STAR RIS 103 (e.g., for refracting data to the network entity 102-1 or the UE 101) , e.g., including a downlink refraction directivity type indication and an uplink refraction directivity type indication.

[0182] In some embodiments, the spatial information may comprise information of a coefficient used for the reflection or transmission of the STAR RIS 103. In some embodiments, the coefficient may be a phase coefficient, an amplitude coefficient or any other suitable coefficients. In some embodiments, the information of the coefficient may indicate the coefficient is for the STAR RIS 103 to reflect data to the network entity 102-1 or the UE 101, e.g., including downlink reflection coefficients indication and uplink reflection coefficients indication. In some embodiments, the information of the coefficient may indicate the coefficient is for the STAR RIS 103 to refract data to the network entity 102-1 or the UE 101, e.g., including downlink refraction coefficients indication and uplink refraction coefficients indication.

[0184] In some embodiments, the information of the deployment angle of the STAR RIS 103 may comprise a rotation angle around an axis of rotation. In some embodiments, the axis of rotation may be an axis x, y, or z. It is to be noted that the axis of rotation may be defined in any other suitable ways. It is to be understood that any combinations of the above control information may also be feasible.

[0185] As shown in FIG. 4, at a step 470, based on the control information, the STAR RIS 103 may perform the transmission and / or reflection operation between the network entity 102-1 and the UE 101.
