Description

A battery module and a preparation method thereofTechnical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a battery module and a preparation method thereof.Prior Art

[0002] Polyurethane materials are widely used in such fields as automotive interior, building insulation, central air conditioning, thermal insulation boxes, and chemical tanks due to their properties such as outstanding energy absorption, excellent high strength and adhesion, excellent thermal insulation, excellent environmental compatibility, excellent durability, high flame retardancy, moisture resistance, and high temperature resistance. In particular, its combination of thermal insulation, flame retardancy and high adhesive strength to the substrate has attracted extensive attention and research interest from battery cell bonding manufacturers and electric vehicle manufacturers.

[0003] Electric vehicle batteries have gone through a process of research and development from battery module design, Cell to Pack (CTP) to Cell to Chassis (CTC) . In this development process, the combination of the development of polyurethane system performance and the efficient processing of polyurethane resin system is becoming more and more important in the research and development of Cell to Pack (CTP) to Cell to Chassis (CTC) .

[0004] With the development of electric vehicles and these technologies, the number of cells in a single battery module is increasing, and the layout is more compact, which requires a more consistent rigidity and strength of the entire battery pack and the Cell to Chassis (CTC) , whereby higher challenges are posed to the cell potting process.

[0005] Battery cells are important and costly components in the entire electric vehicle. Cylindrical cells are one of the development directions for electric vehicles. Comparing to traditional cylindrical cells, cylindrical cells for electric vehicles are designed for higher capacity and energy storage. Therefore, the size and weight of cylindrical cells are much higher. Comparing to pouch cells, cylindrical cells have a rigid casing to provide a better protection and higher mechanical strength. The distance between the cylindrical cells is about 1.5mm. The polyurethane potting foam has quite high density and mechanical strength, and bonds firmly with the cells, so it is difficult to be physically detached without damage.

[0006] At present, if a few of battery cells are abnormal and need to be replaced, their replacement will damage the potting material around. If the cells are potted again, it will be difficult for the cells to form sufficient adhesion with the rest potting material there around, resulting in a significant decrease in the overall strength of the battery. Therefore, all the potting material in the battery has to be removed from the battery, and the overall potting is carried out after maintenance and replacement. This leads to extended maintenance time and a significant increase in maintenance costs. In addition, the potting process requires specific equipment. The maintenance factories are unable to carry out such a process, and hardly ensure the potting quality, thereby affecting the use of batteries and the safety of electric vehicles.

[0007] Meanwhile, the global low-carbon economy encourages and forces electric vehicle manufacturers to recycle and use battery cells on a larger scale and extent. Efficient and fast detachment of polyurethane potting materials without damaging the battery cells is a challenge that all electric vehicle manufacturers and battery producers face and need to solve.

[0008] WO2022 / 188050 discloses a method for potting a battery, including injecting a reaction mixture into the gaps around the battery so that the reaction mixture is allowed to react, expend and cure. The patent application does not involve the detachment and recycling of battery cells.

[0009] WO2019 / 161292 discloses a method for potting a battery cell, including applying a potting composition as a liquid such that the potting composition flows through gaps between adjacent cells and between the cells and the walls of the battery casing. The liquid potting composition is sufficiently flowable to stay at substantially the same height before curing to form a potting compound, and hardens to a solid and forms a potting compound after application. Said potting composition comprises at least 15 wt. %of a liquid flame retardant. The patent application does not involve the detachment and recycling of battery cells either.

[0010] The currently developed methods for the recovery and degradation of polyurethane solids or foams require physical crushing of polyurethane, and then recovery by means of chemical degradation such as alcoholysis, ammonolysis or hydrolysis. These methods are characterized by harsh reaction conditions, such as high temperatures and pressures, and the use of alcohols and strong bases.

[0011] For example, CN 111909336A discloses a method for degradation of polyurethane solid waste, wherein the polyurethane solid waste is crushed into powder of 0.1-1 mm, and mixed with a degradation agent, and then the mixture is subject to preliminary photodegradation treatment with a xenon lamp as light source. Then the mixture after photodegradation is degraded in water in an autoclave at 150 to 170℃ and 5 to 20MPa for 20 to 40 minutes to obtain the final degradation product. In this degradation method, the polyurethane is disintegrated by the combination of the degradation agent and the xenon lamp irradiation, and then hydrolyzed at high temperature and high pressure to complete the degradation of polyurethane.

[0012] As the battery cells usually carry a certain amount of electric power, there is a risk of flammability for charged operation. It is not feasible to use conventional chemical degradation or solvent swelling for detachment. Moreover, conventional degradation methods may damage the battery structure and could not be used for battery recycling.

[0013] Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a fast removable polyurethane potting material, a battery with rapidly disassemble battery cells and a processing method thereof, which are suitable for industrial large-scale production.Summary of the invention

[0175] A Nylon 6 film with a thickness of 0.01 mm and wetting tension of 42 mN / m and a polyvinyl chloride film with a thickness of 0.02 mm and wetting tension of 39 mN / m were respectively wrapped on the surface of the battery cells. All the battery cells were installed in the potting mold. Sample 2 was potted into the gaps between the battery cells by the potting equipment, flowed to all the gaps, and was foamed and cured to obtain the battery cell module.

[0176] The molded density of the cured polyurethane potting foam was 450 kg / m3, and the free rise density was 180 kg / m3. After the mold was stored at room temperature for 24 hours, no battery cells could be detached by tapping all battery cells from the bottom of the mold, as shown in Figure 9.

[0177] Example 6

[0178] The battery cells wrapped with Polytetrafluoroethylene film from Example 1 were used. The component Baydur 31BD21 and the component Desmodur 44V10 L were mixed in a ratio of 100 parts by weight to 138 parts by weight to obtain a polyurethane potting composition (sample 6) . The battery cells were installed in the potting mold. Sample 6 was poured into the gaps between the battery cells by the potting equipment. The polyurethane potting composition flowed to all the gaps, and was foamed and cured to obtain the battery cell module. The reaction parameters of sample 6 and the properties of the cured polyurethane potting foam were shown in Table 3.

[0179] The molded density of the cured polyurethane potting foam was 120 kg / m3, and the free rise density was 100kg / m3. After the mold was stored at room temperature for 24 hours, the potting foam was inverted and the battery cells were tapped. The battery cell partially slipped out of the potting foam, which indicated that the fixing effect of the polyurethane potting foam on the battery cells was not as good as that when the density ratio was of >30%.

[0180] Table 3

[0181] Example 7

[0182] The battery cells wrapped with polytetrafluoroethylene film as shown in Figure 1 were used. The component BAYSAFE BEF 66IF79 and the component Desmodur 44V20 L were mixed in a ratio of 100 parts by weight to 64 parts by weight to obtain a polyurethane potting composition. Battery cells were installed in the potting mold. The polyurethane potting composition was potted into the gaps between the cells by the potting equipment. The polyurethane potting composition flowed to all the gaps, and was foamed and cured to obtain the battery cell module.

[0183] The molded density of the cured polyurethane potting foam was 250 kg / m3, and the free rise density was 88 kg / m3. After the mold was stored at room temperature for 24 hours, the polyurethane potting foam could not contact closely with the battery cells, and it was difficult to achieve the function for fixing the battery. Nevertheless, battery cells could be detached by tapping them from the bottom of the mold.
