Description

MEMBRANE TYPE ACOUSTIC METAMATERIAL FOR SOUND INSULATION AT LOW FREQUENCY AND METHOD OF FABRICATING THE SAMETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This present invention relates to a membrane type acoustic metamaterial comprising a membrane of fabric material applied with an energy absorbing fluid for sound insulation at low frequency, and to a method to fabricate such membrane type acoustic metamaterial for sound insulation at low sound frequency.BACKGROUND

[0002] Human hearing is less sensitive to lower frequency sound while compared to higher frequency sound, which may lead to misconception that health impact of low frequency noise is also less adverse than high frequency one. However, the evidence of health impact by low frequency noise is getting prominent as warned by World Health Organization to request special attention on its health impact, which is estimated to be more serious in general. The health impact of low frequency noise does raise concern. On the one hand, it can be generated by numerous sources in residential and occupational area e.g. ventilation system, transportation. On the other hand, it can be transmitted efficiently from the sources due to low attenuation ability at low frequency in building structure.

[0003] Traditional sound insulation material relay on its thickness and density, or the porous structure to shield sound. However, they are not effective for insulation of low frequency sound. Their thickness and density must be significantly increased to enhance the sound insulation ability at low frequency. The effective thickness and density for them to insulate sound of low frequency is unrealistically large.

[0004] Acoustic metamaterial, which have an anti-resonance at frequency between two out of phase resonance frequencies to reflect sound, have been widely studied to insulate low frequency sound. Typical membrane type acoustic metamaterial applied non-fabric and elastic material e.g. silicone, PU, latex, to form its membrane, which mainly rely on the reflection of sound at anti-resonance frequency to achieve noise insulation at low frequency. Although noise of low frequency is insulated by this way, the reflected sound is still propagating in air which may still cause nuisance. Acoustic metamaterial is proved to successfully insulate low frequency sound; however, it is preferable to dissipate the energy in the acoustic metamaterial rather than just reflect it.

[0005] Reviewing the state of the art, membrane-type acoustic metamaterial, which typically have its membrane formed by thin and flexible sheet material only, like latex, PU, silicone, plastic, resin or rubber, can enhances energy absorption during membrane vibration by introducing additional rigid edges and corners at certain locations on the membrane surface to increase stress at these locations during vibration, like US8579073B2.

[0006] Although the studied membrane type acoustic metamaterials have achieved good sound insulation effect at low frequency range to a certain extent, there is still a need for novel membrane type acoustic metamaterials and methods to achieve elimination of sound energy of noise at low frequency from air.SUMMARY

[0007] Considering that the prior acoustic metamaterials achieve sound insulation at low frequency via reflection only, the present disclosure provides a novel membrane type acoustic metamaterial that can control those resonance frequencies concentrated in low frequency range, while having sound absorption coating as the broad band absorption strategy to compensate the sound insulation effect in those frequencies that are out of the resonance ranges.

[0059] The present disclosure will be further described in detail below with reference to specific embodiments and the accompanying drawings. These embodiments are only intended to illustrate the present invention, rather than limiting the scope of the present disclosure in any  means. In the following embodiments, various structural elements and various processes and methods not described in detail are conventional elements and methods well known in the field.

[0060] Membrane Type Acoustic Metamaterial

[0061] In one aspect, the present disclosure provides a membrane type acoustic metamaterial comprising a membrane of fabric material applied with an energy absorption fluid. The membrane type acoustic metamaterial can both absorb and reflect sound energy to achieve elimination of sound energy of noise at low frequency from air.

[0062] As used herein, the term “membrane type acoustic metamaterial” refers to a material designed to control, direct, and manipulate sound waves or phonons.

[0063] In an embodiment, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the present disclosure may be composed of a single membrane type acoustic metamaterial. In another embodiment, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the present disclosure may be composed of a combination of more than one membrane type acoustic meta material of the same or different shapes and sizes, connected in series or in parallel.

[0064] In an embodiment, the present disclosure provides a membrane type acoustic metamaterial having a structure that can be divided into 2 parts.

[0065] Part 1 is a membrane mounted on a rigid frame, which acts as the medium to react to the incoming sound by vibration. The membrane can be a fabric material applied, coated, or saturated with an energy absorption fluid. In one example, the energy absorption fluid is a shear thickening fluid. The membrane must be pre-stressed and mounted on the frame, so it can vibrate to react. The rigid frame acts as a framework to hold the membrane, so the membrane can respond to incoming sound by vibration. In one example, the frame is in the scale below 10 cm.In between two out of phase resonance frequencies, there is a frequency of anti-resonance where the two out of phase resonance frequencies vibrates in a way to cancel each other, and thus the sound of frequency at anti-resonance is totally reflected.

[0066] Part 2 is one or more additional features to interact with the membrane, such as one or more masses attached on the membrane, or one or more subframes to further divide the membrane into different portion, which are used to adjust the anti-resonance frequency or further enhance sound energy absorption.

[0067] The use of the fabric material applied, coated, or saturated with the energy absorption fluid to form the membrane in Part 1 is important in the present disclosure. The energy absorption fluid is shear thickening fluid. Energy absorption during vibration of membrane is enhanced by the shear thickening fluid e.g. a suspension of silica nanoparticles in ethylene glycol.

[0068] The density of the shear thickening fluid together with the fabric material can be large enough to seal the surface (s) of the fabric so that the sound wave must exert force on the membrane rather than just directly passing through any void of the membrane. Otherwise extra coatings, for example, latex, PU, silicone, plastic, resin or rubber, are needed to coat on either one or both surfaces to completely seal the surface (s) .

[0069] Membrane of Fabric Material

[0070] The membrane of the membrane type acoustic metamaterial according to the present disclosure is of fabric material. The fabric material acts as a medium to hold the energy absorption fluid to absorb and reflect the sound energy during vibration of membrane.

[0071] The use of fabric material is important in the present disclosure since the energy absorption fluid need to be held by a medium to maintain in its location. Thin elastic membrane used in typical membrane type acoustic metamaterial does not absorb the energy absorption fluid or cannot held the energy absorption fluid long because the fluid may slip away easily. Energy absorption fluid coating spread on the thin elastic membrane will change its location when the membrane vibrates. Thus, suitable material for the membrane has to be chosen so that it can absorb or hold the fluid inside.

[0072] In an embodiment, the fabric material used for the membrane may be any fabric material that can absorb or hold the energy absorption fluid, and also vibrate in response to sound wave at low frequency. Examples of the fabric material may include, but be not limited to, cotton, leather, wool, silk, silk-cotton, linen, Kevlar, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene terephthalate (UHMW PET) , and equivalent or similar fabric materials. In a specific embodiment, the fabric material is cotton. In another specific embodiment, the fabric material is leather. In an embodiment, the fabric material used for the membrane may have a density ranged from 50-350 gsm (gram per square meter) , such as 200 gsm.

[0073] Energy Absorption Fluid

[0074] As used herein, the term “energy absorption fluid” refers to the fluid that can absorb the force (e.g., acoustic wave) applied to the materials.

[0075] In the present disclosure, the energy absorption fluid should be absorbed or held by the fabric material. In an embodiment, the energy absorption fluid is a shear thickening fluid (STF) . STF is a dense colloidal suspension exhibiting an abrupt increase in viscosity with increasing shear rate. The STF can enhance energy absorption of the membrane.

[0076] According to the "hydrocluster" theory proposed by Bossis and Brady, if shear rate inside shear thickening fluid increase, a hydrodynamic lubrication forces arise and cause particles  inside to aggregate and collide to form a hydro cluster to flow of fluid. When sound wave sets the membrane to vibrate, it causes an increase in shear rate, and thus shear thickening happens and absorb the sound energy.

[0077] In an embodiment, the STF may be a suspension of solid particles such as corn starch, silica (SiO2) particles, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) particles, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles, Rubidium oxide (Nd2O3) particles, cellulose nanocrystals, titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles, carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, or the like, in a dispersion medium such as water, glycols (such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, poly (ethylene glycol) , and poly (propylene glycol) ) , and glycerin. In a specific embodiment, the STF is a suspension of silica particles in a glycol medium (glycol-silica composite) . In a further specific embodiment, the STF is a suspension of silica nanoparticles in ethylene glycol, or in poly (ethylene glycol) , or in glycerin. In another specific embodiment, the shear thickening fluid is a suspension of corn starch in water.

[0078] In an embodiment, the STF may comprise 50-80 wt%, such as 60-70 wt%, such as 60 wt%, 65 wt%, 67 wt%and 70 wt%, of the solid particles based on the total weight of the STF. In an embodiment, the STF may comprise 20-50 wt%, such as 20-40 wt%, such as 25-35 wt%, such as 20-30 wt%, such as 20 wt%, 25 wt%, and 30 wt%, of the dispersion medium based on the total weight of the STF.

[0079] In an embodiment, the STF may further comprise anisotropic nanoparticles to enhance the roughness. In an embodiment, the anisotropic nanoparticles may be one or more selected from the group consisting of anisotropic cellulose nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and CaCO3 nanoparticles. In an embodiment, the STF may comprise 0-2 wt%, such as 0.1-1.5 wt%, such as 0.5-1.5 wt%, such as 1.0 wt%, of the anisotropic nanoparticles based on the total weight of the STF.

[0080] In an embodiment, the STF may further comprise an additive to enhance the shear thickening effect of the STF. Examples of the additive used for the STF may include, but be not limited to, silicone oils such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) , metal alloys, carbides, oxides, and the like. In a specific embodiment, silicone oil is used as the additive to enhance the shear thickening effect of the STF. In an embodiment, the ratio of the silicone oil to the dispersion medium is in a range of0 to 1: 3 (v / v) , such as 1: 3 (v / v) . The STF with different contents of the additive can be used for different applications. For example, STF with high content additive can be used on the fabrication of soft body armor when STF with low content additive can be used on fiber reinforced plastic / polymer (FRP) composites.

[0081] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the STF may comprise 0-20 wt%, such as 1-15 wt%, such as 5-12 wt%, such as 5-10 wt%, such as 10 wt%, of the additive, such as silicone oil, such as PDMS, based on the total weight of the STF.

[0082] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the STF may comprises 60-70 wt%of the solid particles, 0-1 wt%of the anisotropic nanoparticles, 5-10 wt%of the additive, such as silicone oil, and 20-30 wt%of the dispersion medium, based on the total weight of the STF.

[0083] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the STF may comprises 60-70 wt%of the silica nanoparticles, 0-1 wt%of cellulose nanocrystals, 5-10 wt%of PDMS, and 20-30 wt%of the ethylene glycol, based on the total weight of the STF.

[0084] The shear thickening effect can be adjusted by applying different amounts of the STF. In an embodiment, in the step of applying the STF to the fabric material, the amount of the STF to be applied to the fabric material is in a range of from 50%to 300%by weight, such as 150%to 250%by weight, such as 150%, 200%, or 250%by weight.

[0085] The presence of STF in the fabric material increases the modulus of the fabric material and can thus enhance the energy absorption capacity of the fabric material. As demonstrated in the present disclosure, the fabric material coated with STF effectively increases sound transmission loss at low frequency.

[0086] Frame and Subframe

[0087] In the present disclosure, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial further comprises a frame for mounting the membrane of fabric material applied with an energy absorption fluid.

[0088] In an embodiment, the frame is rigid. In an embodiment, the frame may be of the material of PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) , Nylon, Carbon fiber, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) , ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) , PLA (Poly-Lactic Acid) , HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) . In an embodiment, the frame may have a design of a simple unit such as circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon, a honeycomb unit, an array unit such as a triangle array, a square array, a rectangle array, a hexagon array and a ring array, or others. In the array unit, the frame may have two, three, four or more of simple units, such as circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons and hexagons. In a specific embodiment, the frame may have a circle design. There is no particular limitation to the mass of the frame. Since the mass of the frame does not contribute to the acoustic performance, such that it can be vary by material. There is no particular limitation to the size of the frame. The size of the frame may depend on the final use of the metamaterial.

[0089] Figure 1 shows (A) side, (B) perspective, and (C) top views of one example of a membrane (101) mounted on a rigid frame (102) in accordance with a membrane type acoustic  metamaterial of the present disclosure. Once the membrane (101) is mounted on the rigid frame (102) , the membrane (101) is stressed.

[0090] In the present disclosure, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial further comprises one or more than one subframe in contact with either one side or both sides of the membrane of fabric material applied with an energy absorption fluid, inside the frame.

[0091] In an embodiment, the subframe may be of hard or soft material, for example, PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) , Nylon, Carbon fiber, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) , ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) , PLA (Poly-Lactic Acid) , HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) . In an embodiment, the subframe may have a design of a simple unit such as a circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon, a honeycomb unit, an array unit which comprises two or more simple units, such as a triangle array, square array, hexagon array, and a ring array, a grid unit, or others. In an embodiment, the subframe may have a design of a grid unit. In an embodiment, the subframe may have a design of a single one simple unit, such as a single one circle, one triangle, one square, one rectangle, or one hexagon. In a specific embodiment, the subframe has a design composed of a single one triangle. In a specific embodiment, the subframe has a design composed of a single one hexagon. In an embodiment, the subframe may have a design of an array unit which comprises two, three, four or more simple units, such as circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, and hexagons. In a specific embodiment, the subframe has a design of an array unit which comprises four triangles. In a specific embodiment, the subframe has a design of an array unit which comprises four squares. In a specific embodiment, the subframe has a design composed of a number of hexagons which are of the same size and are continuous distributed throughout the frame. Like the frame, there are no particular limitations to the mass and the size of the subframe, which depend on the material to be used and the final application of the metamaterial.

[0092] Figure 2 shows (A) side, (B) perspective, and (C) top views of one example of a subframe (103) attached on the membrane (101) mounted on the rigid frame (102) , wherein the rigid frame (102) is represented by a circle, and the subframe (103) is represented by a grid unit.

[0093] Different designs of the frame and / or the subframe affect the number and the frequency of resonance peaks of the membrane. In an embodiment, the frame has a design of a simple unit such as a circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon, and the subframe may have a design of a simple unit, such as circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon, a honeycomb unit, a grid unit, a array unit, such as triangle array, square array, or hexagon array. In an embodiment, the frame has a design of a circle, and the subframe has a design of a simple unit, such as circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon; a honeycomb unit; a grid unit; or an array unit such as triangle array, square array, and  rectangle array. In a specific embodiment, the frame has a design of a single one circle, and the subframe has a design of a single one hexagon or one triangle. In a specific embodiment, the frame has a design of a single one circle, and the subframe has a design of an array unit which composed of four triangles or four squares. In a specific embodiment, the frame has a design of one circle, and the subframe has a design composed of a number of hexagons which are of the same size and are continuous distributed throughout the frame.

[0094] In an embodiment, the subframe may be fixed at its relative location to the frame, for example, at a distance from the frame of 0-5 cm. In an embodiment, the subframe may be or may not be attached with the frame. In an embodiment, the subframe may be fixed inside the frame in an inscribed manner. In another embodiment, the subframe may be located at the center of the frame. In a further embodiment, the subframe may be distributed evenly inside the frame. In an alternative embodiment, the subframe may be able to freely vibrate with the membrane.

[0095] In a specific embodiment, the frame has a design of a single one circle, and the subframe has a design of a single one hexagon, wherein the top points of the hexagon are positioned on the circle. In a specific embodiment, the frame has a design of a single one circle, and the subframe has a design of a single one triangle, wherein the triangle is located at the center of the circle, and the top points of the triangle are positioned inside the circle at a distance of less than 5 cm from the circle. In a specific embodiment, the frame has a design of a single one circle, and the subframe has a design of an array unit which composed of four triangles or four squares, wherein the four triangles or four squares are evenly and symmetrically distributed inside the circle. In a specific embodiment, the frame has a design of a single one circle, and the subframe has a design composed of a number of hexagons which are of the same size and are continuous distributed throughout the circle.

[0096] Some specific examples of the designs and location relationships of the frame and subframe (s) that may be used in the present application are shown in Figure 3, wherein 102 represents the frame, and 103 represents the subframe.

[0097] Mass

[0098] In an embodiment, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the disclosure further comprises one or more than one mass attached on either one side or both sides of the membrane of fabric material applied with the energy absorbing fluid. Adding mass helps the membrane to exhibit better sound insulation performance.

[0099] In an embodiment, magnets and aluminum may be used as the mass. The magnets that may be used as the mass in the present invention are common permanent magnets in the art, such as  neodymium iron boron magnet, and samarium-cobalt magnet. In a specific embodiment, samarium-cobalt magnet is used as the mass.

[0100] Different effects of sound reflection or insulation in the low frequency range can be achieved by adjusting the mass parameters, such as the shape, the weight, the location and the distribution of the mass.

[0101] In an embodiment, the mass has a cylinder or block shape. Figure 4 shows (A) side, (B) perspective, and (C) top views of one example of a mass (104) attached on the membrane (101) mounted on the rigid frame (102) .

[0102] The cylinder mass may have a diameter or length in a range of 1-80 mm, such as 1.5-60 mm,for example, a diameter of 1.5 mm, 2 mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 7 mm, 8mm, 9 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 30 mm, 35 mm, 40 mm or 50 mm. In an embodiment, the mass has a block shape. The block mass may have a length in a range of from 1 to 80 mm, such as from 10 to 60 mm. In an embodiment, the mass has a weight in a range of from 12 to 100 g, such as from 20 to 100g, such as a weight of 12 g, 24 g, or 80 g. The effect of the weight and diameter / length of the mass contributes to density and bulk modulus, helping improve reflection in low frequency range.

[0103] In an embodiment, the mass may be located at the center of the membrane. In another embodiment, the mass may be distributed evenly on the membrane.

[0104] In an embodiment, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial has the best low frequency sound insulation effect when the mass is located at the central point of the membrane.

[0105] In an embodiment, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial has a mass distribution configuration of a simple unit, such as triangle, square, rectangle, and circle, a honeycomb unit, an array unit which comprises two or more simple units, such as a ring array, square array, or rectangle array, or others.

[0106] Some specific examples of the mass distribution on the membrane of fabric material are shown in Figure 5, wherein the membrane (101) is represented by the open circle, and the mass (es) (104) is / are represented by the solid shapes.

[0107] In one specific embodiment, the mass is samarium-cobalt magnet with a mass of 80 g and an area of 15 cm2, increases the average transmission loss 1.39 dB compared to the same coated cotton material without the mass.

[0108] Tension Control Mechanism

[0109] In an embodiment, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the disclosure further comprises a tension control mechanism. The mechanism can quick adjust the tension of the membrane. In an embodiment, the tension control mechanism is a screw as a quick pushing  device. When the membrane is fixed with a fixture, pushing the tension control mechanism can help increase the tension applied on the membrane. Figure 6 shows one specific example of the tension control mechanism (105) on the membrane type acoustic metamaterial (10) of the present disclosure. The sample is fixed on the ring and the screw is fixed in the center of the ring. Controlling the screw will push and relax the membrane which controls the tension of the membrane.

[0110] Tension tester is used to measure the tension of the membrane. The acoustic metamaterial has natural frequency for sound insulation and the natural frequency can shift with the change of tension. Lower natural frequency help improve sound transmission loss (STL) between 50 and 500 Hz. In the present disclosure, tension can be tuned with the tension control mechanism to get fit different scenario of sound insulation, from 50 to 500 N / m2. Low tension help improve sound insulation of low frequency and increased tension help insulate sound of high frequency.

[0111] Additional Mechanism

[0112] In an embodiment, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the present disclosure further comprises an additional mechanism to pull or push the membrane to further amend its tension or shape. In an embodiment, the additional mechanism is adjustable at its location to control the degree of pushing or pulling. In a specific embodiment, the additional mechanism may be a pin. In an embodiment, the pin may be of hard or soft material, for example, ceramic, plastic and metal. In an embodiment, the pin is adjustable at its location to control the degree of pushing and pulling. In a specific embodiment, the additional mechanism may be a magnet. In an embodiment, the magnet may be any common permanent magnet in the art, such as a neodymium-iron-boron magnet, or a samarium-cobalt magnet.

[0113] Multilayer Structure

[0114] In an embodiment, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the present disclosure has a multilayer structure. In an embodiment, the multilayer structure may comprise the membrane of fabric material applied with the energy absorption fluid and one or more than one layer of air-tight material on either one side or both sides of the membrane to achieve an air tight effect. Examples of the air-tight material may include, but not limited to, silicones, and polyesters. In another embodiment, the multilayer structure may comprise the membrane of fabric material applied with the energy absorption fluid and one or more than one layer of elastic material covered on either one or both sides of the membrane. Examples of the elastic material may include, but be not limited to silicone film, PU film, plastic film, resin film, latex film, rubber film or their composites.

[0115] Figure 7 shows one example of the multilayer sturcture of the membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the present disclosure, which comprises the membrane (101) made of fabric material applied with enery absorption fluid, and two lays (106) , (107) of elastic material, such as silicone, PU, and latex, each disposed on one side of the membrane (101) .

[0116] Method of Preparing the Shear Thickening Fluid

[0117] The present disclosure provides a method of preparing the shear thickening fluid, comprising:

[0118] Step 1: dispersing pre-weighted solid particles and optional anisotropic nanoparticles evenly in a dispersion medium, through fully stirring, to obtain a well-mixed fluid;

[0119] Step 2: reducing the viscosity of the fluid by probe sonication for further stirring;

[0120] Step 3: producing an evenly distributed fluid by repeating Step 2 one or more times;

[0121] Step 4: adding an additive to enhance the shear thickening effect to the fluid of Step 3;

[0122] Step 5: stirring the fluid of Step 4 and then subjecting it to ultrasonication and stirring it again; and

[0123] Step 6: repeating Step 5 one or more times to provide an evenly distributed composition,

[0124] to obtain the shear thickening fluid, wherein the solid particles, the optional anisotropic nanoparticles, the dispersion medium, and the additive are defined in the Shear Thickening Fluid above.

[0125] In an embodiment, the solid particle is selected from the group consisting of corn starch and silica nanoparticles. In an embodiment, the optional anisotropic nanoparticles are selected from the group consisting of cellulose nanocrystals, carbon nanotubes and CaCO3 nanoparticles. In an embodiment, the dispersion medium is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and glycerin. In an embodiment, the additive is an silicone oil, such as PDMS.

[0126] In an embodiment of the method, the solid particle is used in an amount of 50-80 wt%, such as 60-70 wt%, such as 60 wt%, 65 wt%, 67 wt%and 70 wt%, based on the total weight of the STF. In an embodiment of the method, the optional anisotropic nanoparticles is used in an amount of 0-2 wt%, such as 0.1-1.5 wt%, such as 0.5-1.5 wt%, such as 1.0 wt%, based on the total weight of the STF. In an embodiment of the method, the dispersion medium is used in an amount of 20-50 wt%, such as 20-40 wt%, such as 25-35 wt%, such as 20-30 wt%, such as 20 wt%, 25 wt%, and 30 wt%, based on the total weight of the STF. In an embodiment of the method, the additive is used in an amount of 0-20 wt%, such as 1-15 wt%, such as 5-12 wt%, such as 5-10 wt%, such as 10 wt%, based on the total weight of the STF.

[0127] In an embodiment, the ratio of the additive to the dispersion medium is in a range of 0 to 1: 3 (v / v) , such as 1: 3 (v / v) .

[0128] Method of Fabricating the Membrane Type Acoustic Metamaterial

[0129] The present disclosure provides a method of fabricating the membrane type acoustic metamaterial according to the present disclosure, which comprises a step of applying an energy absorption fluid to the membrane of fabric material.

[0130] In an embodiment, the fabric material used for the membrane may be any fabric material that can absorb or hold the energy absorption fluid, and also vibrate in response to sound wave at low frequency.

[0131] In an embodiment, the energy absorption fluid may be a shear thickening fluid (STF) , such as those as described in the Energy Absorption Fluid above. Energy absorption during vibration of the membrane is enhanced by the shear thickening fluid.

[0132] In an embodiment, applying an energy absorption fluid to the membrane of fabric material may be achieved by soaking the membrane of fabric material in the energy absorption fluid. In another embodiment, applying an energy absorption fluid to the membrane of fabric material may be achieved by coating or spraying the energy absorption fluid on one or both of the surfaces of the membrane of fabric material.

[0133] In a specific embodiment, the present invention provides a method of applying the STF to the membrane of fabric material, comprising:

[0134] Step 1: diluting the STF with an alcohol to produce a diluted STF;

[0135] Step 2: applying the diluted STF to the fabric material, to let the diluted STF hold or absorbed by the fabric material; and

[0136] Step 3: rolling and squeezing the fabric material to remove excess STF,

[0137] to obtain the membrane of fabric material applied with STF.

[0138] In an embodiment, the alcohol is ethanol. In an embodiment, the ratio of the STF to the alcohol is in a range of from 1: 4 to 1: 1 (v / v) .

[0139] In an embodiment, the method of the present disclosure may further comprise a step of stretching the membrane applied with the energy absorption fluid to apply a pre-stress. In an embodiment, the method may further comprise a step of fixing the membrane at its edge with a  frame after the membrane is stretched. The frame is as defined in the Frame and Subframe above.

[0140] In an embodiment, the method of the present disclosure may optionally comprise a step of equipping additional features to interact with the membrane applied with the energy absorption fluid. This step is to adjust the anti-resonance frequency or further enhance sound energy absorption.

[0141] In a specific embodiment, the step of equipping additional features to interact with the membrane applied with the energy absorption fluid is achieved by attaching one or more than one mass on either one side or both sides of the membrane. The mass is as defined in the Mass above.

[0142] In a specific embodiment, the step of equipping additional features to interact with the membrane applied with the energy absorption fluid is achieved by adding a tension control mechanism in contact with the membrane to further tune the tension of the membrane. The tension control mechanism is as defined in the Tension Control Mechanism above.

[0143] In a specific embodiment, the step of equipping additional features to interact with the membrane applied with the energy absorption fluid is achieved by adding one or more than one subframe in contact with either one side or both sides of the membrane inside the frame, to further divide the membrane into different portions. The subframe is as defined in the Frame and Subframe above. The designs and the relative locations of the frame and the subframe are also as defined in the Frame and Subframe above. In some embodiments, the subframe may be fixed at its relative location to the frame, for example, at a distance of0-5 cm from the frame. In some alternative embodiments, the subframe may be able to freely vibrate with the membrane.

[0144] In a specific embodiment, the step of equipping additional features to interact with the membrane applied with the energy absorption fluid is achieved by adding an additional mechanism to pull or push the membrane on either one side or both sides of the membrane, to further amend the tension or shape of the membrane. In an embodiment, the additional mechanism is adjustable at its location to control the degree of pushing or pulling. The additional mechanism is as defined in the Additional Mechanism above. In a specific embodiment, the additional mechanism is one or more than one pin. In a further specific embodiment, the one or more than one pin is added to push or pull the membrane from either one side or both sides of the membrane.

[0145] In an embodiment, the method of the present disclosure may further comprise a step of applying a layer of air-tight material on either one side or both sides of the membrane of the fabric material applied with the energy absorption fluid, to form an air-tight multilayer structure.  In an embodiment, examples of the air-tight material may include, but not be limited to, silicones, and polyesters.

[0146] In an embodiment, the method of the present disclosure may further comprise a step of covering the membrane of fabric material applied with the energy absorption fluid with an elastic material on either one side or both sides of the membrane. In an alternative embodiment, the method of the present invention may further comprise a step of spreading a layer of elastic material on either one side or both sides of the membrane of fabric material applied with the energy absorption fluid. Suitable examples of the elastic material may include, but not be limited to silicone film, polyurethane (PU) film, plastic film, resin film, latex film, rubber film or their composite.

[0147] In a specific embodiment, the method of fabricating the membrane type acoustic metamaterial comprising a membrane of fabric material applied with an energy absorption fluid of the present discloses comprises:

[0148] Step 1: Immersing a piece of fabric material, e.g. cotton, wool, silk, Kevlar into a pour of energy absorption fluid to form a membrane of the fabric material applied with the energy absorption fluid;

[0149] Step 2: Optionally, covering the fabric material membrane applied with the energy absorption fluid with an elastic material, e.g. a plastic sheet, or spreading a layer of elastic material, e.g. silicone, PU, latex, on either one or both surfaces of the membrane;

[0150] Step 3: Pre-stressing the fabric material membrane applied with the energy absorption fluid; and

[0151] Step 4: Mounting and fixing the pre-stressed fabric material membrane on a frame; and

[0152] Step 5: Optionally, equipping additional features to interact with the membrane, e.g. masses attached on the membrane, subframe to further divide the membrane into different portion, additional mechanism to pull or push the membrane to further amend its tension or shape, to form the membrane type acoustic metamaterial.

[0153] In an embodiment of the method, in Step 1, the fabric material is immersed into the energy absorption fluid for more than 8 hours.

[0154] In another aspect, the present disclosure provides a membrane type acoustic metamaterial fabricated by the method of the present disclosure as defined above.

[0155] Use of the Membrane Type Acoustic Metamaterial

[0156] The present disclosure provides use of the membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the present disclosure or fabricated by the method of the present disclosure in different areas, e.g.  earmuff, sound insulation panel, and shield of air condition to shield low frequency noise from noise source, e.g. motor sounds of cars or washers.

[0157] In an aspect, the present disclosure provides an earmuff comprising the membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the present disclosure or fabricated by the method of the present disclosure.

[0158] In another aspect, the present disclosure provides a sound insulation panel comprising a membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the present disclosure or fabricated by the method of the present disclosure.

[0159] In a further aspect, the present disclosure provides a shield of air condition comprising a membrane type acoustic metamaterial of the present disclosure or fabricated by the method of the present disclosure.

[0160] Method of Enhancing Sound Insulation Ability of the Membrane Type Acoustic Metamaterial

[0161] The present disclosure provides a method of enhancing sound insulation ability of a membrane type acoustic metamaterial by applying an energy absorption fluid to the acoustic metamaterial.

[0162] In an embodiment, the membrane type acoustic metamaterial comprises a membrane of fabric material. The membrane of fabric material is as defined in the Membrane of Fabric Material above.

[0163] In an embodiment, the energy absorption fluid is as defined in the Energy Absorption Fluid above. In an embodiment, the energy absorption fluid is shear thickening fluid. In a further embodiment, the shear thickening fluid is a suspension of silica particles in a glycol medium, such as a suspension of silica nanoparticles in ethylene glycol. In another embodiment, the shear thickening fluid is a suspension of corn starch in water.

[0164] In an embodiment, the energy absorption fluid is held or absorbed by the membrane of fabric material.

[0165] EXAMPLES

[0166] Example 1 Preparation of shear thickening fluid

[0167] Pre-weighted 31.5g silicon dioxide nanoparticle (Superior Silica) and 0.5g cellulose nanocrystals (Nanografi) were evenly dispersed in 15g ethylene glycol (Acros Organics) , through fully stirring, to obtain a well-mixed fluid. 5g Silicone oil (PDMS, Aldrich) was added to the fluid. The viscosity of the fluid was reduced by probe sonication for further stirring. The step of reducing the viscosity was repeated twice to produce an evenly distributed fluid. The  fluid was stirred and then undergone ultrasonication and stirred again, which step was repeated twice to provide an evenly distributed composition, to provide the shear thickening fluid.

[0168] Example 2 Effect of silicone oil on the shear thickening of shear thickening fluid

[0169] The effect of silicone oil on the shear thickening of shear thickening fluid was tested in this example.

[0170] Two STF samples were prepared by following the procedure of Example 1, wherein Sample 1 did not comprise silicone oil, and Sample 2 comprised 20%silicone oil (PDMS) replaced in the dispersion medium.

[0171] The samples were placed on the plates of a rheometer (Rheotens) and the results as shown in Table 1 below.

[0172] Table 1

[0173] As shown in Table 1, the presence of silicone oil enhances the shear thickening effect of the STF.

[0174] Example 3 Selection of fabric material

[0175] Five kinds of fabric materials, green cotton, white cotton, black cotton, linen, and Kelvar, were tested for their ability to absorb the STF and loss of the STF over time.

[0176] The STF as prepared in Example 1 was diluted with ethanol in a volume ratio of 1: 1 to obtain a diluted STF, which was coated on the five fabric materials (three kinds of cottons, linen, and Kelvar) . Then the fabric materials (200gsm) were rolled and squeezed to remove the excessive STF to obtain the fabric materials coated with the STF. The fabric materials coated with the STF were placed within conditioning chamber (20℃, 60%RH) , and tested for their ability to absorb the STF after the coating. The ability to absorb the STF was expressed by the coating weight percentage of the fabric material.

[0177] The coating weight percentages of the fabric materials were calculated by the formula: (W2-W1)  / W1×100%, wherein W1 is the weight of the fabric materials before the coating; and W2 is the weight of the total sample including STF and fabric materials at different times after the coating.

[0178] The results were shown in Figure 8, which indicates that all five kinds of fabric materials all exhibit good ability to absorb the STF and the cottons provide the most absorption with coating weight percentages over 320%, in which the green cotton shows the most absorption with a coating weight percentage of475%; and that almost no loss of the STF, and even a little increase of the weight, were observed for all the five kinds of fabric materials over time. The increase in weight may be due to absorption of moisture.

[0179] Example 4 Sound Insulation of cottons with different percentages of STF

[0180] In accordance with the result of Example 3, cotton was used for the test of sound insulation.

[0181] The STF, which was prepared by following the procedure in Example 1 except that the silicone oil is 10%to dispersion medium, was diluted with ethanol in a volume ratio of 1: 1 to obtain a diluted STF, which was coated on white cottons. Then the cottons were rolled and squeezed to remove the excessive STF to obtain 50%, 100%, 150%, and 220%coated cottons. 50%coated cotton means 1g cotton coated with 0.5g STF while 200%coated cotton means 1g cotton coated with 2g STF. Non-coated cotton was used as a control.

[0182] The coated cottons with different weight percentages and the controls were tested for the average sound transmission loss according to the international standard ASTM E2611-09 by use of Transmission Loss Tube Kit (50 Hz-6.4 kHz) Type 4206-T (Brüel& ) .

[0183] Specifically, the frequency range for transmission loss (dB) was from 50 to 1600 Hz. And the sample was a 10cm diameter circle.

[0184] The results were provided in Table 2 and Figure 9. It demonstrates that the increasing coating weight percentage help increase the sound transmission loss between 50-500 Hz from 50-220 coating percent.

[0185] Table 2

[0186] The results indicated that the presence of STF in the cotton effectively increases sound transmission loss at low frequency of50-500 Hz.

[0187] Example 5 Sound Insulation of the Metamaterial with Different Masses

[0188] The STF as prepared in Example 1 was diluted with ethanol in a volume ratio of 1: 1 to obtain a diluted STF, which was coated on white cottons. Then the cottons were rolled and squeezed to remove the excessive STF to obtain the fabric materials coated with the STF. The coating weight percentage is 100%, which means 1g cotton is coated with 1g STF.

[0189] A mass of samarium–cobalt magnet was fixed in the center of each of the coated cottons. The same coated cotton without the mass was used as the control. The coated cottons with masses and the control were tested for the sound transmission loss according to the international standard ASTM E2611-09 by use of Transmission Loss Tube Kit (50 Hz-6.4 kHz) Type 4206-T (Brüel& ) .

[0190] Specifically, the frequency range for transmission loss (dB) was from 50 to 1600 Hz. And the samples were 10cm diameter circle cottons with the indicated masses and sizes.

[0191] The results were provided in Figures 10 and 11. Figure 10 shows that the natural frequencies 192, 208, 330, and 340 Hz shifted to low frequency range with 12g mass. The shift is around 20Hz. Figure 11 illustrates that the masses in different weights and sizes increase the average transmission loss in 50-500Hz. Especially that 80g masses increase the average transmission loss 1.39 dB of the same coated cotton.

[0192] The results indicated that the added mass help shift the natural frequencies to low frequency range. It contributes to the increase of the sound transmission loss in low frequency range.

[0193] Example 6 Preparation of the Metamaterial with Tension

[0194] The STF as prepared in Example 1 was diluted with ethanol in a volume ratio of 1: 1 to obtain a diluted STF, which was coated on cottons. Then the cottons were rolled and squeezed to remove the excessive STF to obtain the fabric materials coated with the STF. The coating percentage is 100%, which means 1g cotton is coated with 1g STF.

[0195] A tension control device as shown in Figure 6 was used to control tension. The coated cotton without tension control device was used as the control. The coated cottons in high (130 N / m2) and low (70 N / m2) tension and the control were tested for sound transmission loss according to the international standard ASTM E2611-09 by use of Transmission Loss Tube Kit (50 Hz-6.4 kHz) Type 4206-T (Brüel& ) .

[0196] Specifically, the frequency range for transmission loss (dB) was from 50 to 1600 Hz. And the samples were 10cm diameter circle cottons with different tensions as indicated above.

[0197] The results were provided in Figure 12. Figure 12 shows that the natural frequencies 240 and 288 Hz shifted to low frequency range. The shift is around 20Hz. And there are no natural frequencies of the control without tension in the same range.

[0198] The results indicated that the lower tension help shift the natural frequencies to low frequency range. It contributes to the increase of the sound transmission loss in low frequency range.

[0199] While the present invention has been described with reference to the specific embodiments thereof, it should be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes may be made and equivalents may be substituted without departing from the true spirit and scope of the invention. In addition, many modifications may be made to adapt a particular situation, material, composition of matter, process, process step or steps, to the spirit and scope of the present invention. All such modifications are intended to be within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
