Description

MOISTURE AND HEAT CURABLE COMPOSITION, PREPARATION METHOD AND USE OF THE SAME

[0001] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] The present invention relates to a moisture and heat curable composition, a process for preparing the composition, a process for bonding substrates using the composition, an article bonded or sealed using the composition, as well as a cured product and use of the composition.

[0003] BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0004] The moisture curable silicone-based adhesive or sealant compositions are well-known to have various advantages, such as good mechanical properties, good thermal and chemical resistance, and low shrinkage, and are used in several fields of application, e.g., food, dental, or molding. However, to date, such silicone-based systems suffer from a slow curing speed, restricting their application in many fields.

[0005] For a long time, there is always a need in the art for optimizing the formulation of the curable silicone-based adhesive or sealant compositions, so as to increase the curing speed thereof while maintaining or even improving the tensile strength or elongation of their cured products.

[0006] Significant efforts have been directed towards the decrease or elimination of these drawbacks over the years. Some of these existing methods use different crosslinkers or more catalysts for improving the curing speed to some extent. Moreover, a silicone-acrylate hybrid system is another means for increasing the curing speed, due to the light curing of the acrylate group (s) present in such a system.

[0007] Further, there are also some methods which attempt to modify the silicone composition via mixing the silicone resin (s) and the epoxy resin (s) together. This is also referred to as “blending modification” . However, the solubility parameters of the silicone and the epoxy resin differ significantly, resulting in a poor compatibility between these two phases. Thus, through simple blending modification, the difference in interaction forces between two phases tends to result in significant micro-phase separation, thereby forming larger “island” structures.

[0008] As such, there remains a need in the art for developing an improved curable silicone composition that would address these shortcomings of the currently available silicone  compositions and that would find use in a variety of applications.

[0009] SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0010] The present inventors have conducted intensive study, and found that the aforesaid object can be achieved utilizing a moisture and heat curable composition as expatiated hereinafter, which not only has an increased curing speed and yields a cured product having good tensile strength and elongation at break, but also can be cured via multiple curing manners.

[0072] According to the present invention, the moisture and heat curable composition comprises (A) at least one silicone-epoxy hybrid prepolymer bearing OH group (s) and / or alkoxy group (s) bonded to Si atom and epoxy group (s) . The presence of alkoxyl group (s) bonded to Si atom in the prepolymer allows the prepolymer to decompose via contacting with moisture and condensate so as to cure, the presence of OH group (s) allows the prepolymer to crosslink with the crosslinker during the moisture curing, and the presence of epoxy group (s) in the prepolymer allows the composition to be cured with the aid of a latent imine curing agent described hereafter by heat.

[0073] The at least one silicone-epoxy hybrid prepolymer useful in the present application has a siloxane chain as the backbone and has alkoxy group (s) and / or OH group (s) and epoxy group (s) as functional groups.

[0074] The silicone-epoxy hybrid prepolymer may be obtained by incorporating epoxy group (s) into a silicone resin backbone structure. Preferably, the silicone-epoxy hybrid prepolymer may be prepared by end-capping the SiOH group (s) of a SiOH-functional organopolysiloxane with an epoxy-containing alkoxysilane or oligomers thereof in the presence of an end-capping catalyst. More preferably, the silicone-epoxy hybrid prepolymer may be prepared by a process comprising the steps of:

[0075] (i) charging a SiOH-functional organopolysiloxane, an epoxy-containing alkoxysilane or oligomers thereof, and an end-capping catalyst into a mixing system under vacuum and stirring to form a mixture;

[0076] (ii) heating the mixture to 20 to 80 ℃, with stirring, such as at a speed of 50 to 500 rpm; and

[0188] Test Methods

[0189] The following tests were performed in the Examples.

[0190] Skin Over Time

[0191] The skin over time was measured according to ASTM D2377. The shorter the skin over  time was, the faster curing speed of the composition was.

[0192] Shore A Hardness

[0193] The Shore A Hardness was measured according to ASTM-D2240. The evaluation criteria for Shore A Hardness was based on its measured values:

[0194] - ×: “Poor” , a measured value less than 30;

[0195] - ○: “Good” , a measured value between 30 and 45; and

[0196] - ◎: “Excellent” , a measured value larger than 45.

[0197] Tensile Strength &Elongation at Break

[0198] Tensile strength and elongation at break were determined according to ASTM D412 using dumbbell specimens.

[0199] The evaluation criteria for the tensile strength was based on its measured values:

[0200] - ×: “Poor” , a measured value less than 1.5 MPa;

[0201] - ○: “Good” , a measured value between 1.5 MPa and 1.8 MPa; and

[0202] - ◎: “Excellent” , a measured value larger than 1.8 MPa.

[0203] The evaluation criteria for elongation at break was based on its measured values:

[0204] - ×: “Poor” , a measured value less than 50%;

[0205] - ○: “Good” , a measured value between 50%and 80%; and

[0206] - ◎: “Excellent” , a measured value larger than 80%.

[0207] The Shore A hardness, tensile strength and elongation at break were tested for the cured products solidified using three curing manners:

[0208] ‐ Curing Manner 1: heat curing at 150℃ for 1 hour, and then moisture curing at 23℃, 50%RH for 7 days;

[0209] ‐ Curing Manner 2: only moisture curing at 23℃, 50%RH for 7 days; and

[0210] ‐ Curing Manner 3: moisture curing at 23℃, 50%RH for 7 days, and then heat curing at 150℃ for 1 hour.

[0211] Comparative Example 1

[0212] In this comparative example, two premixtures were prepared, wherein premixture 1 was prepared by mixing 42.5 wt. %of POLYMER FD 6 and 1.23 wt. %of Dynasylan GLYMO, and  premixture 2 was prepared by mixing 42.5 wt. %of POLYMER FD 6 and 1.02 wt. %of EPONTM Resin 828. These two premixtures were photographed in presence or absence of a bias light, and these photographs taken in presence and absence of a bias light were shown in Figures 1A and 1B, respectively.

[0213] As depicted in Figures 1A and 1B, the premixture 1 was a homogeneous and clear system; on the contrary, the premixture 2 was heterogeneous and unclear. This clearly demonstrated the immiscibility between the epoxy resins and the silicone polymer and thus the significant microphase separation in the blending modification. In contrast, the premixture 1, which contained the raw materials for preparing the silicone-epoxy hybrid prepolymer, exhibited good immiscibility between the components.

[0214] Comparative Examples 2 &3 and Inventive Examples 1-6

[0215] Table 1. Compositions of Curable Compositions

[0216] The compositions of Inventive Examples 1-6 were prepared using the materials listed in Table 1 according to the process for preparing the moisture and heat curable composition as described above and in each example using 0.02 parts by weight of n-butyl lithium as the end-capping catalyst, and the compositions of Comparative Examples 2-3 were prepared using the materials listed in Table 1 according to a substantially same process except that the end-capping agents were PTMS, an end-capping agent bearing no epoxy group. The amounts shown in Table 1 are in parts by weight.

[0217] These curable compositions were tested according to the test methods as described above. The test results were shown in Table 2 below.

[0218] Table 2. Test Results

[0219] The compositions of Comparative Examples 2-3 were only moisture curable. On the contrary, the compositions of Inventive Examples 1-6 can be cured using a moisture curing mechanism alone, or using a combination of a moisture curing mechanism and a heat curing mechanism in an arbitrary order (i.e., either first cured by moisture and subsequently cured by heat, or first cured by heat and subsequently cured by moisture) , thereby improving the flexibility in use.

[0220] As can be seen from the above tables that compared with Comparative Examples 2-3, all of the compositions of Inventive Examples 1-6 exhibited the lower skin over times and comparable or better properties in terms of Shore A hardness, tensile strength or elongation at break, indicating that the moisture and heat curable compositions according to the present invention can be cured at a faster speed while bonding properties can be maintained or even improved.

[0221] Meanwhile, since the epoxy groups are covalently bonding to the silicone chain, the compositions of the present application do not have phase separation issue over time.

[0222] Although some preferred embodiments have been described, many modifications and variations may be made thereto in light of the above teachings. It is therefore to be understood that the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
