[0016] The present disclosure will now be described in detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanied drawings, which form a part of the present disclosure, and which show, by way of illustration, specific examples of embodiments. Please note that the present disclosure may,  however, be embodied in a variety of different forms and, therefore, the covered or claimed subject matter is intended to be construed as not being limited to any of the embodiments to be set forth below.

[0017] Throughout the specification and claims, terms may have nuanced meanings suggested or implied in context beyond an explicitly stated meaning. Likewise, the phrase “in one embodiment” or “in some embodiments” as used herein does not necessarily refer to the same embodiment and the phrase “in another embodiment” or “in other embodiments” as used herein does not necessarily refer to a different embodiment. The phrase “in one implementation” or “in some implementations” as used herein does not necessarily refer to the same implementation and the phrase “in another implementation” or “in other implementations” as used herein does not necessarily refer to a different implementation. It is intended, for example, that claimed subject matter includes combinations of exemplary embodiments or implementations in whole or in part.

[0018] In general, terminology may be understood at least in part from usage in context. For example, terms, such as “and” , “or” , or “and / or, ” as used herein may include a variety of meanings that may depend at least in part upon the context in which such terms are used. Typically, “or” if used to associate a list, such as A, B or C, is intended to mean A, B, and C, here used in the inclusive sense, as well as A, B or C, here used in the exclusive sense. In addition, the term “one or more” or “at least one” as used herein, depending at least in part upon context, may be used to describe any feature, structure, or characteristic in a singular sense or may be used to describe combinations of features, structures or characteristics in a plural sense. Similarly, terms, such as “a” , “an” , or “the” , again, may be understood to convey a singular usage or to convey a plural usage, depending at least in part upon context. In addition, the term “based on” or “determined by” may be understood as not necessarily intended to convey an exclusive set of factors and may, instead, allow for existence of additional factors not necessarily expressly described, again, depending at least in part on context.

[0019] The present disclosure describes methods and devices for conducting mobile terminated (MT) procedure for ambient internet of things (AIoT) user equipments (UEs) .

[0020] In recent years, internet of things (IoT) has attracted much attention in the wireless communication world. More ‘things’ are expected to be interconnected for improving productivity  efficiency and increasing comforts of life. Further reduction of size, complexity, and power consumption of IoT devices may enable the deployment of tens or even hundreds of billion IoT devices for various applications and provide added value across the entire value chain. However, it is quite challenging to power all the IoT devices by battery that needs to be replaced or recharged regularly and / or manually, which leads to high maintenance cost, serious environmental issues, and even safety hazards for some use cases (e.g., wireless sensor in electric power and petroleum industry) .

[0021] In some implementations, most of the existing wireless communication devices are powered by battery that needs to be replaced or recharged manually. The automation and digitalization of various industries open numbers of new markets requiring new IoT technologies of supporting batteryless devices with no energy storage capability or devices with energy storage that do not need to be replaced or recharged manually. The form factor of such devices must be reasonably small to convey the validity of target use cases. Currently,

[0022] In some implementations, considering the limited size and complexity required by practical applications for batteryless devices with no energy storage capability or devices with limited energy storage that do not need to be replaced or recharged manually, the output power of energy harvester is typically from 1μW to a few hundreds of μW. Some existing cellular devices may not work well with energy harvesting due to their peak power consumption of higher than 10mW. Some existing barcode and / or radio frequency identification (RFID) devices consume low power, but the limited reading range of a few meters usually requires handheld scanning which leads to labor intensive and time-consuming operations, or RFID portals / gates which leads to costly deployments. Moreover, the lack of interference management scheme may result in severe interference between RFID readers and capacity problems, especially in case of dense deployment. Therefore, it may be difficult to support large-scale network with seamless coverage for some IoT devices (e.g., RFID) .

[0023] In some implementations, ambient power-enabled IoT may be used to address at least one of the difficulties / issues as described above; and there are some issues / problems associated with ambient IoT UEs: for examples, how to efficiently determine a paging ID for a single AIoT UE or for a group of AIoT UEs; when a large quantity of AIoT UEs need to page, how to page  them efficiently; and / or how to determine paging resources for a single IoT UE or for a group of AIoT UEs.

[0024] The present disclosure describes various embodiments for conducting mobile terminated (MT) procedure for AIoT UEs, addressing at least one of issues / problems discussed above, providing improvement in the technology field of wireless communication and increasing its efficiency and performance.

[0025] FIG. 1 show a wireless communication system 100 including a core network (CN) 110, at least one radio access network (RAN) 130, and one or more user equipment (UE) (152, 154, and 156) . The RAN 130 may include a wireless network base station, or a NG radio access network (NG-RAN) base station or node, which may include a nodeB (NB, e.g., a gNB) in a mobile telecommunications context. In one implementation, the core network 110 may include a 5G core network (5GC) , and the interface 125 may include a NG interface. In some implementations, the UE may be AIoT UEs.

[0057] Embodiment Set I

[0058] The present disclosure describes various embodiments for conducting MT procedure for AIoT UEs, particularly related to paging identity and group for AIoT UEs.

[0059] In some implementations, for some ambient IoT (AIoT) UE, user TAG, an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) , EPC (Electronic product code) , or alike may be allocated by the producer, which may be used to physically identify the UE uniquely. Under some circumstances, this physical UE identity may not be suitable to identify the UE by a radio access network (RAN) for at least one of the following reasons. 1. The IMEI or EPC may be too long to be transferred between UE and gNB, e.g. which will consume too much bits. 2. The IMEI or EPC may not include location information (e.g. mobility management entity code (MMEC) and access and mobility management function (AMF) identifier) , which is not convenient for network to locate the UE’s registration node for the roaming UE. 3. For AIoT UE, both UE specific paging (e.g. to check one UE’s status or change the UE’s configuration) and group paging (e.g. triggering group inventory, or triggering multiple UEs to report their status) are necessary; and the IMEI or EPC is not suitable for group paging.

[0060] In some implementations, for addressing at least one of the issues / problems described above, a logical UE identity (e.g., TAG ID and / or TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity) ) may be allocated for each AIoT UE, e.g. user TAG. The logical UE ID may be composed by at least one of the following information. 1. A core network node identifier that the UE is registered with, e.g. MMEC or AMF identifier. 2. a user code, which is allocated or authorized by an operator to identify which User (e.g. a user or company etc. ) the UE or user tag belonging to. 3. an equipment code, which is allocated or authorized to identify the equipment of the user. 4. a 5G-S-TMSI (5G Short-Temporary Mobile Subscription Identifier) part and an equipment code part, wherein the 5G-S-TMSI is the user’s NAS identity and the equipment code is used to identify the equipment of the user. The equipment code are usually coded by continuous sequence number for  same type of UE’s usage, for same core network node identifier, for user code and / or for same 5G-S-TMSI.

[0061] In some implementations, a structure of a logical UE identity may be as follows: <MMEC or AMF Identifier><User Code><Equipment code> or <5G-S-TMSI><Equipment code>. For a non-limiting example, when MMEC =1001, UserCode =234567, and Equipment code=80001, the logical UE ID is: 100123456780001.

[0062] In some implementations, the logical AIoT UE identity may be allocated by the operator and / or user when the UE or TAG is activated (e.g. written and stored in the UE or USIMs) or when the UE is registered in the core network (e.g. by registration procedure , attach procedure etc. ) . In some implementations, the logical AIoT UE ID, may be updated by the operator and / or user, or triggered by the UE mobility by the TAU (Tracking Area Update) LAC (Location Area update procedure etc) . In some implementations, the logical AIoT UE ID may be used for UE identification in UE specific paging, UE group paging and / or initial access procedure (e.g. in contention based access procedure) .

[0063] In some implementations, when paging a specific UE, the whole logical AIoT UE identity may be included in a paging message to identify the UE. For a non-limiting example, when paying a specific AIoT UE with MMEC =1001, UserCode =234567, and Equipment code=80001, its whole logical AIoT UE identity (100123456780001) is included in the paging message from a RAN to one or more AIoT UE including this specific AIoT UE. The paging message may be a paging from CN to RAN, or from RAN to UE.

[0064] In some implementations, when paging a group of UE, partial bits or partial digits of logical AIoT UE identity may be included in the paging message to identify the group of UEs. When paging all the UEs of a user, only <MMEC or AMF Identifier><User Code> or <5G-S-TMSI> is included in the paging message to identify all UEs of the user. When paging some UEs of a user, <MMEC or AMF Identifier><User Code><partial bits or partial digits of the Equipment code> or <5G-S-TMSI><partial bits or partial digits of the Equipment code> may be included in the paging message to identify the paged UEs of the user. The paging message may be a paging from CN to RAN, or from RAN to UE.

[0065] In some implementations, when the RAN and / or UE receives the logical AIoT UE  identity in the paging message, it matches the received logical UE identity with it’s own stored logical UE identity to determine whether it is paged. When the RAN and / or UE receives partial bits or partial digits of logical UE identity included in paging message, it matches the received partial bits or partial digits of logical UE identity with the corresponding most significant bit (MSB) of it’s own stored logical UE identity to determine whether it belongs to the group of UEs that is paged (or to determine whether the group of UEs that is paged includes the present UE) . In some implementations, when the RAN and / or UE receives partial bits or partial digits of logical UE identity that is included in the paging message, a paging group identity length or a valid bits (or digits) number of logical UE identity used for paging is also included in the paging massage to indicate that how many most significant bits (or digits) of logical UE identity shoud be matched to determine whether the UE is paged (including UE specific paging or group paging) .

[0066] For a non-limiting example with MMEC =1001, UserCode =234567, and Equipment code=80000 to 89999, when paging all the AIoT UEs of the user with UserCode =234567, a paging ID (or a partial bits or partial digits of logical AIoT UE identity) , e.g. 1001234567, may be included in the paging message; when paging first (e.g. with least equipment code numbers (80000-80099) ) 100 UEs of user with UserCode =234567, a paging ID (or a partial bits or partial digits of logical AIoT UE identity) , 1001234567800, is included in the paging message. The paging message may be a paging from CN to RAN, or from RAN to UE.

[0067] In some implementations, when paging a group of AIoT UEs, a logical AIoT UE identity and a mask code may be included in the paging message to identify the group of AIoT UEs. The mask code indicates which bits or digits should be neglected during bits / digits matching to determine whether the AIoT UE is paged (including UE specific paging or group paging) . When determining whether the UE is paged, only the not masked (i.e., not-neglected) bits or digits of logical AIoT UE identity is compared to match with the corresponding bits or digits of the logical AIoT UE identity. When they are matched, the AIoT UE determines that it belongs to the group of AIoT UEs that is paged and / or the AIoT UE is paged.

[0068] For a non-limiting example, when paging UE ID of 100123456780001 and a mask code of 10012345678****indicates that the last 4 digits are masked are included in the paging message, the AIoT UE may only match 10012345678 (i.e., masking off the last 4 digits of the paging UE ID)  with the highest 11 digits of its ID to determine whether it belongs to the group of AIoT UEs that is paged and / or the AIoT UE is paged. In this example, the paging group may include 10,000 UEs.

[0069] In some implementations, an AIoT UE may be allocated with a logical UE identity and one or more of a UE paging group identity.

[0070] In some implementations, the total number of UEs in the UE paging group may be included in the paging message from CN to RAN (e.g. nodeB) so that RAN can determine to paging the group of UEs based on network load etc. In some implementations, when an AIoT UE receives paging (including group paging) , it may trigger random access (e.g., a 16-bits (or more bits) random number or pseudo-random number (RN16) or more bits) ) or UL information transmission.

[0071] In some implementations, there are a large number of UEs in one paging group, and the network may want to split them to several paging sub-groups for paging to avoid subsequent signalling congestion caused by group paging them all in one large group.

[0072] In some implementations, the paging subgroup may be implemented by any one of the following methods.

[0073] For one method, paging group identity length or valid bits (or digits) number of logical UE identity may be used when splitting the paging group to several paging subgroups. When the bits number of paging group identity length or valid bits of logical UE identity is increased by one, the paging group may be split to two subgroups; and / or for decimal logical UE identity, when the digits number of paging group identity length or valid digits of logical UE identity is increased by one, the paging group may be split to 10 subgroups.

[0074] For a non-limiting example with MMEC =1001, UserCode =234567, and Equipment code=80000 to 89999, when a core network determines to page first (e.g. with least equipment code number) 100 UEs of the user with the UserCode = 234567, a paging ID of 1001234567800 is included in the paging message from the CN to the RAN. When the RAN decides to split the paging to 10 subgroups to paging the UE, it may include the paging IDs of 10012345678000, 10012345678001, ... 10012345678009 separately in the paging messages from the RAN to the UEs for sub-group paging. Each of the subgroups may include 10 AIoT UEs.

[0075] For another method, a paging subgroup number and a paging subgroup identity may be included in the paging message for sub-group purpose. When the UE determines it is paged by group, it further decides whether it is included in the paging sub-group included in the paging message as follows. When the paging subgroup number and a paging subgroup identity are included in the paging message: when the logical UE identity MOD paging subgroup number =paging subgroup id, the UE determines that it belongs to the paging sub-group, wherein “MOD” is to get the remainder of a division operation. When the paging subgroup number and a paging subgroup identity are included in the paging message, only when the UE belongs the paging group and belongs the paging sub-group, the UE determines it is paged.

[0076] For another method, a paging subgroup number may be set to an AIoT UE by common signalling, e.g. a cell system information block (SIB) . Different paging frequency resource and / or paging time domain resource corresponds to different paging subgroup identity. The UE may monitor its paging subgroup on its frequency paging resource and / or time domain paging resource. For example, the UE may monitor paging on the paging frequency with paging frequency resource index = logical UE identity MOD paging subgroup number.

[0077] In some implementations, a network may need to inventory a mobility UE (e.g. trigger the new coming UEs in the cell to report their status) . The paging message may include a cell identity, and / or a paging cause (e.g. mobility UE inventory, mobility UE status reporting, new coming UEs status reporting in the cell) . When receiving the paging message, the new coming UEs in the cell (e.g. determined by the cell identity being different from that the UE report status at the lastest time) shall report its status.

[0078] In some implementations, a network may need to inventory an inactive UE (e.g. trigger the un-inventory UEs to report their status) . The paging message may include, an inactive time duration, and / or a paging cause (e.g. inactive UE inventory, inactive UE status reporting, un-inventory UE status reporting etc. ) . When receiving the paging message, the UEs that have not been inventoried (e.g. determined by having not reported their status) or have not been inventoried during the latest inactive time duration shall report its status or inventory information.

[0079] In some embodiments, the logical UE identity in the paging message can also be substitute by a physical equipment ID, e.g. an EPC (Electronic product code) , a PEI (Permanent  Equipment Identifier) , A IoT equipment identifier, or a partial bits or partial digits of the physical equipment ID.

[0080] Embodiment Set II

[0081] The present disclosure describes various embodiments for conducting MT procedure for AIoT UEs, particularly related to paging resource configuration and / or selection for AIoT UEs.

[0082] In some implementations, usually, AIoT UEs may only work in a limited frequency band width (e.g. 200khz) , and there may be a large number of AIoT UEs in the network. For the large number of AIoT UEs working simultaneously, multiple carrier frequencies may be used in the AIoT network for large capacity. AIoT UEs need to determine the paging carrier frequency. In some implementations, when AIoT UE may only support backscattering transmission (e.g. there is no active RF components for transmission) , frequency scanning (e.g. scanning all RF channels to find used frequency and / or cell) may not be supported. In some implementations, the AIoT UE may use one of the following methods to determine the paging carrier frequency.

[0083] For one method, an initial paging carrier frequency is allocated by an operator when the UE or TAG is produced, activated or registered in the network (e.g. written and stored in the UE or USIMs) , and the UE camps on the initial allocated carrier frequency and monitors paging by default. In some implementations, the operator may be a network or UE administrator; or the operator may remotely be an application program.

[0084] For another method, the paging carrier frequency may be updated by UE specific signalling, e.g. AS signalling (e.g., MAC CE or RRC Message) or NAS signalling. After updated, the UE monitors paging on the updated carrier frequency.

[0085] For another method, a common signalling (e.g. SIB) including paging carrier frequency information may be broadcasted by the RAN. The paging carrier frequency information may include one of more of paging carrier frequencies. The UE determines and monitors paging on the paging frequency with paging frequency index = logical UE identity MOD paging subgroup number.

[0086] Embodiment Set III

[0087] The present disclosure describes various embodiments for conducting MT procedure for  AIoT UEs, particularly related to paging information for AIoT UEs.

[0088] In some implementations, for at least one AIoT UE, paging may have different purpose, and paging information may include paging purpose / cause, referring to at least one of the following: to trigger inventory (e.g. to report the UE’s status) ; to send downlink information to UE (e.g. to write or update some parameters or information to UE) ; to trigger UE positioning; to command the UE to do something (e.g. to kill the unused UE for recycling the configured resource) ; and / or to trigger access (e.g. to trigger interactive communication between UE and network) .

[0089] In some implementations, since different paging purpose may cause different UE behavior and different subsequent procedure, when the network sends a paging message to at least one AIoT UE, the paging message may include a paging cause to indicate the paging purpose. The paging cause may include at least one of the purpose / causes discussed above, e.g., inventory, positioning, access, kill, DO-DTT, DT etc.

[0090] In some implementations, when the paging is used to send downlink information to UE (e.g. to write or update some parameters or information to UE) , the paging message may also include NAS data or NAS PDU for downlink information.

[0091] Embodiment Set IV

[0092] The present disclosure describes various embodiments for conducting MT procedure for AIoT UEs, particularly related to contention resolution procedure for AIoT UEs.

[0093] In some implementations, for MT procedure (e.g. paging procedure, procedure trigged by paging, or paging triggered procedure) , when the UE identity is included in the paging message, a contention resolution ID (including partial UE identity bits or partial UE identity digits) in the first uplink transmission and / or in the subsequent downlink transmission may be used for UE identification. The partial UE Identity bits or partial UE identity digits may be the least significant bits or least significant digits of the UE identity.

[0094] In some implementations, when a RAN (e.g, NodeB) sends a paging message including the whole UE Identity, first partial UE Identity bits (e.g. the most significant bits, or left most bits) , or first partial UE identity digits (e.g. the most significant digits, or left most digits) , the NodeB may receive the first uplink transmission including the second partial UE Identity bits (e.g. the least  significant bits, or right most bits) , or second partial UE identity digits (e.g. the least significant digits, or right most digits) ; and the NodeB may determine that the UE has been identified or confirmed by the UE, and may send subsequent downlink transmission including the third partial UE Identity bits, or third partial UE identity digits to the UE, wherein the third partial UE identity bits, or third partial UE identity digits is the same as the second partial UE identity bits, or second partial UE identity digits, or is some tail bits of the second partial UE identity bits, or second partial UE identity digits..

[0095] In some implementations, when the UE sends the first uplink transmission including the second partial UE identity bits, or second partial UE identity digits, and receives subsequent downlink transmission including the third partial UE identity bits, or third partial UE identity digits to the UE, the UE may determine that the UE has been identified or confirmed by both the Node B, and can perform subsequent UE specific transmission and / or reception, wherein the third partial UE identity bits, or third partial UE identity digits is the same as the second partial UE identity bits, or second partial UE identity digits, or is some tail bits of the second partial UE identity bits, or second partial UE identity digits.
