AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing wireless communication technologies face challenges in effectively managing the near-field effects of extremely large antenna arrays, which are not adequately addressed by the design principles of massive MIMO, necessitating new channel models, transceiver architectures, and transmission schemes for 6G communications.

Method used

The implementation of a subarray-based transmission scheme for extremely large antenna arrays, where the antenna array is partitioned into subarrays, each associated with a respective Transmission Configuration Indication (TCI) state, allowing for differentiated DMRS transmissions and compensation for Doppler effects through subarray-specific channel estimation.

Benefits of technology

This approach enhances the spectral efficiency and adaptability of wireless communications by compensating for Doppler shifts and spatial non-stationarity, improving signal decoding and handling partial-blocking issues in near-field scenarios.

[0044] In the wireless communications system 100, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may use resources of the wireless communications system 100 (e.g., time resources (e.g., symbols, slots, subframes, frames, or the like) or frequency resources (e.g., subcarriers, carriers) ) to perform various operations (e.g., wireless communications) . In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different resource structures. For example, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support different frame structures. In some implementations, such as in 4G, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support a single frame structure. In some other implementations, such as in 5G and among other suitable radio access technologies, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures (e.g., multiple frame structures) . The NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may support various frame structures based on one or more numerologies.

[0045] One or more numerologies may be supported in the wireless communications system 100, and a numerology may include a subcarrier spacing and a cyclic prefix. A first numerology (e.g., μ=0) may be associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. In some implementations, the first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with the first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may utilize one slot per subframe. A second numerology (e.g., μ=1) may be associated with a second subcarrier spacing (e.g., 30 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A third numerology (e.g., μ=2) may be associated with a third subcarrier spacing (e.g., 60 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix or an extended cyclic prefix. A fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) may be associated with a fourth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 120 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix. A fifth numerology (e.g., μ=4) may be associated with a fifth subcarrier spacing (e.g., 240 kHz) and a normal cyclic prefix.

[0046] A time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to frames (also referred to as radio frames) . Each frame may have a duration, for example, a 10 millisecond (ms) duration. In some implementations, each frame may include multiple subframes. For example, each frame may include 10 subframes, and each subframe may have a duration, for example, a 1 ms duration. In some implementations, each frame may have the same duration. In some implementations, each subframe of a frame may have the same duration.

[0047] Additionally or alternatively, a time interval of a resource (e.g., a communication resource) may be organized according to slots. For example, a subframe may include a number (e.g., quantity) of slots. The number of slots in each subframe may also depend on the one or more numerologies supported in the wireless communications system 100. For instance, the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth numerologies (e.g., μ=0, μ=1, μ=2, μ=3, μ=4) associated with respective subcarrier spacings of 15 kHz, 30 kHz, 60 kHz, 120 kHz, and 240 kHz may utilize a single slot per subframe, two slots per subframe, four slots per subframe, eight slots per subframe, and 16 slots per subframe, respectively. Each slot may include a number (e.g., quantity) of symbols (e.g., orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols) . In some implementations, the number (e.g., quantity) of slots for a subframe may depend on a numerology. For a normal cyclic prefix, a slot may include 14 symbols. For an extended cyclic  prefix (e.g., applicable for 60 kHz subcarrier spacing) , a slot may include 12 symbols. The relationship between the number of symbols per slot, the number of slots per subframe, and the number of slots per frame for a normal cyclic prefix and an extended cyclic prefix may depend on a numerology. It should be understood that reference to a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) associated with a first subcarrier spacing (e.g., 15 kHz) may be used interchangeably between subframes and slots.

[0048] In the wireless communications system 100, an electromagnetic (EM) spectrum may be split, based on frequency or wavelength, into various classes, frequency bands, frequency channels, etc. By way of example, the wireless communications system 100 may support one or multiple operating frequency bands, such as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) , FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) , FR3 (7.125 GHz –24.25 GHz) , FR4 (52.6 GHz –114.25 GHz) , FR4a or FR4-1 (52.6 GHz –71 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz –300 GHz) . In some implementations, the NEs 102 and the UEs 104 may perform wireless communications over one or more of the operating frequency bands. In some implementations, FR1 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for cellular communications traffic (e.g., control information, data) . In some implementations, FR2 may be used by the NEs 102 and the UEs 104, among other equipment or devices for short-range, high data rate capabilities.

[0049] FR1 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least three numerologies) . For example, FR1 may be associated with a first numerology (e.g., μ=0) , which includes 15 kHz subcarrier spacing; a second numerology (e.g., μ=1) , which includes 30 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing. FR2 may be associated with one or multiple numerologies (e.g., at least 2 numerologies) . For example, FR2 may be associated with a third numerology (e.g., μ=2) , which includes 60 kHz subcarrier spacing; and a fourth numerology (e.g., μ=3) , which includes 120 kHz subcarrier spacing.

[0050] Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has been a fundamental part of the 4G or 5G system, and may continue to be an important part of 6G networks. Massive MIMO (also known as large-scale antenna systems and very large MIMO) is a MIMO technology where an  NE may be equipped with a large number of antenna elements (for example, 50 antenna elements) , which are used to perform transmissions that share the same time and frequency band and are separated in the spatial domain. Massive MIMO is one of the most critical technologies for 5G communications. With massive antenna arrays at the NE, massive MIMO can improve the spectral efficiency by orders of magnitude through beamforming or multiplexing. Herein, the terms "antenna element" and "antenna" may be used interchangeably.

[0051] For 6G communications, extremely large-scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) , which is a MIMO technology where an NE may be equipped with a number of antennas much larger than that for massive MIMO, can effectively achieve 10-fold increases in spectral efficiency. On the other hand, benefiting from the rich spectrum resource at millimeter-wave (mmWave) band or terahertz (THz) band, high-frequency communications may provide largely available bandwidth. Meanwhile, the very small size of high-frequency antennas favorably enables the deployment of XL-MIMO with an extremely large number of antenna elements. Therefore, high-frequency XL-MIMO may be a key enabling technology for 6G communications.

[0052] As the size of the antenna array increases, the near field region for the EM field generated by the antenna array may increase, and thus many UEs may be located in the near field region, instead of the far field region, of the antenna array.

[0053] In the far field, the EM wave radiated from the antenna array can be treated as a planar wave (or a combination of planar waves) . As a result, the design of massive MIMO in 5G NR is based on the planar wave assumption. For example, the beamforming vector driving a subset or all of the antenna elements in the antenna array is a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) vector steering towards the direction of the outgoing or incoming wave.

[0054] However, in the near field, the EM wave radiated from the antenna array cannot be treated as a planar wave (or a combination of planar waves) . Therefore, the design of massive MIMO in 5G NR may be inapplicable for XL-MIMO, and the use of XL-MIMO in 6G with near field requires new designs for channel model, transceiver architecture, channel estimation, transmission scheme, etc.

[0055] The present disclosure provides a subarray-based transmission scheme for 6G XL-MIMO communication. In particular, the embodiments of the present disclosure provide various designs related to DMRS transmissions.

[0056] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, it is assumed that the antenna array at a BS is a large antenna array (e.g., ELAA) , which may be partitioned into a number of subarrays, and the antenna array at a UE is of a regular size. It is contemplated that the described solutions may be applicable to a UE with a large antenna array (e.g., ELAA) without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure.

[0057] Figure 2 illustrates an example of transmission with an antenna array partitioned into subarrays in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure.

[0058] In the example shown in Figure 2, a one-dimensional antenna array of a BS is partitioned into N subarrays (e.g., labelled 0 to N-1) , wherein N≥1. Each subarray consists of M adjacent antennas (e.g., labelled 0 to M-1) , wherein M≥1. For simplicity, only three subarrays are shown in Figure 2. Please note that, although solutions for one-dimensional antenna arrays are described in the present disclosure, it is contemplated that the solutions described herein may also apply to a two-dimensional antenna array or a three-dimensional antenna array with some arithmetic manipulations. For example, a two-dimensional antenna array may be partitioned into multiple two-dimensional subarrays, and the described solutions for one-dimensional antenna arrays may be similarly applied in each dimension.

[0059] In the example shown in Figure 2, the antenna array at a UE is of a regular size and is not partitioned. Subarray i (i∈ {0, 1, …, N-1} ) of the antenna array of the BS may be associated with a beamforming vector steering towards the UE. For example, the line between the center of subarray i and the center of the antenna array of the UE may represent the direction of a signal transmitted from subarray i to the UE with the beamforming vector. The angle of arrival (AOA) of the signal is  which is the angle between the direction of the signal and the line that is vertical to the antenna array of the UE. The angle of departure (AOD) of the signal is  which is the angle between the direction of the signal and the line that is vertical to subarray i.

[0060] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, since different subarrays of the antenna array of the BS may transmit signals to the UE with different downlink beams, each subarray may have its own TCI state. In some embodiments, each TCI state may configure a downlink reference signal, e.g., a tracking reference signal (TRS) , for the UE to obtain quasi co-location (QCL) parameter (s) for physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) and associated DMRS reception. For example, the QCL parameter (s) may include at least one of Doppler shift, Doppler spread, average delay, delay spread or spatial receiver filter parameters for receiving signals.

[0061] For the UE to decode PDSCH, the BS may transmit DMRS as part of the PDSCH for the UE to perform channel estimation. Due to different AODs and AOAs from different subarrays of the antenna array of the BS to the UE, when the UE moves around, signals from different subarrays may be subject to different Doppler effects (e.g., different Doppler shifts and / or different Doppler spreads) . To compensate for the different Doppler shifts and / or Doppler spreads associated with different subarrays, the UE needs to receive DMRSs from the different subarrays. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, the UE may perform channel estimation on a per-subarray basis based on the received DMRSs. This allows the UE to determine a receiver filter (or receiving filter) associated with each subarray which can be adjusted based on a TCI state associated with the subarray. Then the UE may apply the determined receiver filters to received signals.

[0062] More details will be described in the following text in combination with the appended drawings.

[0063] Figure 3 illustrates a flowchart of an exemplary method in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The operations of the method illustrated in Figure 3 may be performed by a BS (e.g., NE 102 in Figure 1) as described herein or other apparatus with the like functions. In some implementations, the BS may execute a set of instructions to control functional elements of the BS to perform the described operations or functions.

[0064] As shown in Figure 3, in step 302, the BS may partition an antenna array (e.g., ELAA) into N subarrays, wherein N≥1, and each subarray of the N subarrays includes a number of adjacent antennas and is associated with a respective TCI state.

[0065] In some embodiments, the respective TCI state associated with each subarray of the N subarrays represents a channel generated with a respective beamforming vector for steering a beam associated with the subarray towards a receiver (e.g., an antenna array) of the UE. In some embodiments, the respective beamforming vector associated with each subarray of the N subarrays is a DFT beamforming vector.

[0066] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, the BS may transmit a signaling to indicate TCI states associated with the N subarrays.

[0067] In some embodiments, the TCI states associated with the N subarrays may be indicated in downlink control information (DCI) for scheduling a data transmission from the BS.

[0068] In some embodiments, in the case that Nr (Nr≥1) data layers are to be transmitted from the BS to the UE, the BS may divide the N subarrays of the antenna array into Nr subarray groups, and each subarray group of the Nr subarray groups is used to transmit a respective data layer of the Nr data layers. In other words, each data layer is associated with a subarray group consisting of at least one subarray of the N subarrays. The TCI state (s) associated with the subarray (s) in the same subarray group may form a TCI state group. Thus, the DCI for scheduling transmission of the Nr data layers may indicate Nr TCI state groups, wherein each TCI state group of the Nr TCI state groups is associated with a respective subarray group which is used for transmitting a respective data layer of the Nr data layers.

[0069] Different TCI states in the same TCI state group may be configured with the same or different QCL parameters. As an example, a first TCI state in a TCI state group may be configured with all QCL parameters including Doppler shift, Doppler spread, average delay, and delay spread, while the other TCI state (s) in the TCI state group may be configured with only average delay and delay spread when frequency offset pre-compensation is performed by the BS.

[0070] In some embodiments, the TCI state (s) included in each TCI state group of the Nr TCI state groups are transmitted in the DCI for scheduling transmission of the Nr data layers.

[0071] In some embodiments, each TCI state group of the Nr TCI state groups is associated with a group index, and the group index associated with each TCI state group of the Nr TCI  state groups is transmitted in the DCI for scheduling transmission of the Nr data layers. In such embodiments, the BS may transmit the TCI state (s) included in each TCI state group via, e.g., a radio resource control (RRC) or medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) configuration message.

[0072] As shown in Figure 3, in step 304, the BS may transmit one or more DMRSs from one or more subarrays of the N subarrays with a TCI state (s) associated with the one or more subarrays. In some embodiments, each subarray of the N subarrays may transmit a DMRS with the TCI state associated with the subarray.

[0073] In some embodiments, the BS may transmit the one or more DMRSs through one or more DMRS ports. Each DMRS port is associated with at least one of a time resource, a frequency resource, or a code resource (e.g., orthogonal cover code (OCC) ) . Different DMRS ports may be different in their time resources, frequency resources, code resources, or any combination thereof.

[0074] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, the TCI state (s) associated with the one or more subarrays of the N subarrays used for transmitting the one or more DMRSs through the one or more DMRS ports are pre-defined, configured (e.g., via an RRC configuration message) , specified or signaled (e.g., via DCI) .

[0075] The present disclosure provides several solutions for mapping between DMRS ports and TCI states, which will be described below in two cases.

[0076] Case 1: co-polarized antennas

[0077] In case 1, the antenna elements in the antenna array of the BS are co-polarized, which means that all the antenna elements perform transmission in the same polarization direction.

[0078] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, different subarrays may transmit different DMRSs through different DMRS ports. Each subarray may transmit a DMRS through an associated DMRS port with an associated TCI state. In other words, there is a one-to-one relationship between the DMRS ports and the TCI states (or subarrays) . The number of DMRS ports through which the one or more DMRSs are transmitted is the same as the number  of the one or more subarrays (and the number of TCI states) used for transmission and is independent of the number of data layers in the PDSCH that are transmitted from the one or more subarrays of the N subarrays.

[0079] Assuming that a DMRS si is transmitted from subarray i of the antenna array of the BS using a DFT beamforming vector Ui, wherein subarray i belongs to subarray group Sj for transmitting data layer j, the UE may perform subarray-specific signal processing such as Doppler offset compensation. Specifically, the UE may estimate the effective channel Hieff= HiUi between the receiver of the UE and subarray i, Hi represents a channel between the receiver of the UE and subarray i, and the channel estimation includes estimating the Doppler shift and Doppler spread associated with subarray i. This channel estimation allows the UE to determine a subarray-specific receiving filter Vi which can be adjusted based on the TCI state associated with subarray i. Then the UE may apply the subarray-specific Vi on the received signal from subarray i, which may include Doppler compensation in the frequency domain. The UE may combine all the filtered received signals from the subarrays in subarray group Sj to estimate the data layer j received at the UE, e.g., using a maximal ratio combining algorithm.

[0080] For example, it is assumed that the antenna array of the BS has 6 subarrays associated with 6 TCI states (e.g., TCI0, TCI1, TCI2, TCI3, TCI4, TCI5) , respectively. An example mapping between DMRS ports and TCI states (subarrays) is provided in the following Table 1:

[0081] Table 1

[0082] In this example, in the case that all the 6 subarrays are used to transmit a single data layer from the BS, the UE may estimate 6 channels between the receiver of the UE and the 6 subarrays based on 6 DMRSs received through 6 DMRS ports, determine 6 receiving filters based on the channel estimation, and combine 6 post-processing (or filtered with Doppler compensation) signals associated with the 6 TCI states together to estimate the data layer.

[0083] In the case that data layer 0 is transmitted by subarrays {0, 1, 2} associated with TCI states {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2} and data layer 1 is transmitted by subarrays {3, 4, 5} associated with TCI states {TCI3, TCI4, TCI5}, for data layer 0, the UE may estimate 3 channels based on 3 DMRSs received through DMRS ports {0, 1, 2} associated with TCI states {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2} , determine 3 receiving filters based on the channel estimation, and combine 3 post-processing signals associated with TCI states {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2} together to estimate data layer 0; for data layer 1, the UE may estimate 3 channels based on 3 DMRSs received through DMRS ports {3, 4, 5} associated with TCI states {TCI3, TCI4, TCI5} , determine 3 receiving filters based on the channel estimation, and combine 3 post-processing signals associated with TCI states {TCI3,TCI4, TCI5} together to estimate data layer 1.

[0084] In the case that data layer 0 is transmitted by subarrays {0, 2, 4} associated with TCI states {TCI0, TCI2, TCI4} and data layer 1 is transmitted by subarrays {1, 3, 5} associated with TCI states {TCI1, TCI3, TCI5} , for data layer 0, the UE may estimate 3 channels based on 3 DMRSs received through DMRS ports {0, 2, 4} associated with TCI states {TCI0, TCI2, TCI4} , determine 3 receiving filters based on the channel estimation, and combine 3 post-processing signals associated with the TCI states {TCI0, TCI2, TCI4} together to estimate data layer 0; for data layer 1, the UE may estimate 3 channels based on 3 DMRSs received through DMRS ports {1, 3, 5} associated with TCI states {TCI1, TCI3, TCI5} , determine 3 receiving filters based on the channel estimation, and combine 3 post-processing signals associated with the TCI states {TCI1,TCI3, TCI5} together to estimate data layer 1.

[0085] In the near field, spatial non-stationarity may be caused when some (not all) of the antenna elements of the BS are blocked from the receiver of the UE, which may be referred to  as a partial-blocking problem. Thus, it is possible that some (not all) of the subarrays are blocked while others are not. DMRS transmission on a per-subarray (or per-TCI state) basis as described above may allow the UE to estimate the channel to each of the subarrays following their individual DMRS ports, thereby allowing the UE to better cope with the partial-blocking problem.

[0086] According to some other embodiments of the present disclosure, DMRS transmission may be performed on a per-data-layer basis. Specifically, each data layer may be associated with a subarray group consisting of at least one subarray, subarray (s) in the same subarray group may transmit DMRS (s) through the same DMRS port, and subarrays in different subarray groups may transmit DMRSs through different DMRS ports. In other words, a DMRS port may be associated with a subarray group and a TCI state group associated with the subarray group. The number of DMRS ports is the same as the number of subarray groups (and the number of TCI state group) used for transmission and the number of data layers in the PDSCH. Each subarray may transmit a DMRS through an associated DMRS port with an associated TCI state, but the DMRS (s) transmitted from subarray (s) in the same subarray group may be the same and through the same DMRS port.

[0087] For example, it is assumed that the antenna array of the BS has 6 subarrays associated with 6 TCI states (e.g., TCI0, TCI1, TCI2, TCI3, TCI4, TCI5) , respectively.

[0088] In the case that all the 6 subarrays are used for transmitting a data layer to the UE, the antenna array of the BS may have only one subarray group consisting of subarrays {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5} associated with a TCI state group {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2, TCI3, TCI4, TCI5}. An example mapping between DMRS ports and TCI states (subarrays) is provided in the following Table 2:

[0089] Table 2

[0090] In this case, the UE may receive DMRS (transmitted from subarrays {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5} ) through DMRS port 0 with the TCI state group {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2, TCI3, TCI4, TCI5} , and  perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating the data layer.

[0091] In the case that data layer 0 is transmitted by a first subarray group consisting of subarrays {0, 1, 2} associated with a first TCI state group {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2} and data layer 1 is transmitted by a second subarray group consisting of subarrays {3, 4, 5} associated with a second TCI state group {TCI3, TCI4, TCI5}, each of subarrays {0, 1, 2} may transmit a DMRS through a first DMRS port with its associated TCI state, and each of subarrays {3, 4, 5} may transmit a DMRS through a different, second DMRS port with its associated TCI state. An example mapping between DMRS ports and TCI states (subarrays) is provided in the following Table 3:

[0092] Table 3

[0093] In this case, the UE may receive DMRS (transmitted from subarrays {0, 1, 2} ) through DMRS port 0 with the first TCI state group {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 0; and receive DMRS (transmitted from subarrays {3, 4, 5} ) through DMRS port 1 with the second TCI state group {TCI3, TCI4, TCI5} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 1.

[0094] In the case that data layer 0 is transmitted by a first subarray group consisting of subarrays {0, 2, 4} associated with a first TCI state group {TCI0, TCI2, TCI4} and data layer 1 is transmitted by a second subarray group consisting of subarrays {1, 3, 5} associated with a second TCI state group {TCI1, TCI3, TCI5}, each of subarrays {0, 2, 4} may transmit a DMRS through a first DMRS port with its associated TCI state, and each of subarrays {1, 3, 5} may transmit a DMRS through a different, second DMRS port with its associated TCI state. An  example mapping between DMRS ports and TCI states (subarrays) is provided in the following Table 4:

[0095] Table 4

[0096] In this case, the UE may receive DMRS (transmitted from subarrays {0, 2, 4} ) through DMRS port 0 with the first TCI state group {TCI0, TCI2, TCI4} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 0; and receive DMRS (transmitted from subarrays {1, 3, 5} ) through DMRS port 1 with the second TCI state group {TCI1, TCI3, TCI5} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 1.

[0097] For DMRS transmission on a per-data-layer basis as described above, DMRSs received through different DMRS ports with different TCI states (different TCI state groups) can be processed separately at the receiver of the UE in order to improve the receiver performance.

[0098] Case 2: dual-polarized antennas

[0099] In case 2, the antenna elements in the antenna array of the BS are dual-polarized or cross-polarized, which means that each antenna element may transmit two signals independently in two orthogonal polarization directions. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, the two signals with different polarizations transmitted by the same antenna element may have the same TCI state. In this case, each subarray may transmit two DMRSs with different polarizations through two different DMRS ports, respectively, with a same TCI state associated with the subarray.

[0100] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, DMRS transmission may be performed on a per-subarray (or per-TCI state) basis. That is, different subarrays may transmit different DMRSs through different DMRS ports, and each subarray may transmit two  DMRSs with different polarizations through two different DMRS ports with a same associated TCI state. In some embodiments, the two DMRSs transmitted with different polarizations from a same subarray may be associated with a same data layer, or be associated with two different data layers, respectively. In some embodiments, a pair of DMRS signals being transmitted from the same subarray with the same TCI state may be configured by RRC configuration, and no DCI signaling is needed.

[0101] For example, it is assumed that the antenna array of the BS has 6 dual-polarized subarrays associated with 6 TCI states (e.g., TCI0, TCI1, TCI2, TCI3, TCI4, TCI5) , respectively. An example mapping between DMRS ports and TCI states (subarrays) is provided in the following Table 5:

[0102] Table 5

[0103] In this example, the UE may receive 2 DMRSs with different polarization through DMRS ports 0 and 1 with TCI0, receive 2 DMRSs with different polarization through DMRS ports 2 and 3 with TCI1, receive 2 DMRSs with different polarization through DMRS ports 4 and 5 with TCI2, receive 2 DMRSs with different polarization through DMRS ports 6 and 7 with TCI3, receive 2 DMRSs with different polarization through DMRS ports 8 and 9 with TCI4, and receive 2 DMRSs with different polarization through DMRS ports 10 and 11 with TCI5. Then the UE may perform channel estimation based on the 12 received DMRSs, thereby determining subarray-specific receiving filters for estimating received data layer (s) .

[0104] According to some other embodiments of the present disclosure, DMRS transmission may be performed on a per-data-layer basis. Specifically, each data layer may be associated with a subarray group consisting of at least one subarray, subarray (s) in the same subarray group may transmit DMRS (s) through the same DMRS port (s) , subarrays in different subarray groups may transmit DMRSs through different DMRS ports, and each subarray may transmit two DMRSs with different polarizations through two different DMRS ports with a same associated TCI state. In some embodiments, the two DMRSs transmitted with different polarizations from a same subarray may be associated with a same data layer, or be associated with two different data layers, respectively. In other words, a pair of DMRS ports may be associated with a subarray group and a TCI state group associated with the subarray group.

[0105] For example, it is assumed that the antenna array of the BS has 6 dual-polarized subarrays associated with 6 TCI states (e.g., TCI0, TCI1, TCI2, TCI3, TCI4, TCI5) , respectively.

[0106] An example mapping between DMRS ports and TCI states (subarrays) is provided in the following Table 6:

[0107] Table 6

[0108] In this example, in the case that data layer 0 is transmitted with a first polarization from all the 6 subarrays and data layer 1 is transmitted with a second polarization from all the 6 subarrays, the UE may receive DMRS with the first polarization (transmitted from subarrays {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5} ) through DMRS port 0 with a TCI state group {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2, TCI3, TCI4, TCI5} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 0; and receive DMRS with the second polarization (transmitted from subarrays {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5} ) through DMRS port 1 with the TCI state group {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2, TCI3, TCI4, TCI5} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 1.

[0109] Another example mapping between DMRS ports and TCI states (subarrays) is provided in the following Table 7:

[0110] Table 7

[0111] In this example, in the case that data layers 0 and 1 are transmitted with different polarizations from a first subarray group consisting of subarrays {0, 1, 2} and data layers 2 and 3 are transmitted with different polarizations from a second subarray group consisting of subarrays {3, 4, 5} , the UE may receive DMRS with the first polarization (transmitted from subarrays {0, 1, 2} ) through DMRS port 0 with a first TCI state group {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 0; receive DMRS with the second polarization (transmitted from subarrays {0, 1, 2} ) through DMRS port 1 with the first TCI state group {TCI0, TCI1, TCI2} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 1; receive DMRS with the first polarization (transmitted from subarrays {3, 4, 5} ) through DMRS port 2 with a second TCI state group {TCI3, TCI4, TCI5} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 2; and receive DMRS with the second polarization (transmitted from subarrays {3, 4, 5} ) through DMRS port 3 with the second TCI state group {TCI3,TCI4, TCI5} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 3.

[0112] Another example mapping between DMRS ports and TCI states (subarrays) is provided in the following Table 8:

[0113] Table 8

[0114] In this example, in the case that data layers 0 and 1 are transmitted with different polarizations from a first subarray group consisting of subarrays {0, 2, 4} and data layers 2 and 3 are transmitted with different polarizations from a second subarray group consisting of subarrays {1, 3, 5} , the UE may receive DMRS with the first polarization (transmitted from subarrays {0, 2, 4} ) through DMRS port 0 with a first TCI state group {TCI0, TCI2, TCI4} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 0; receive DMRS with the second polarization (transmitted from subarrays {0, 2, 4} ) through DMRS port 1 with the first TCI state group {TCI0, TCI2, TCI4} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 1; receive DMRS with the first polarization (transmitted from subarrays {1, 3, 5} ) through DMRS port 2 with a second TCI state group {TCI1, TCI3, TCI5} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 2; and receive DMRS with the second polarization (transmitted from subarrays {1, 3, 5} ) through DMRS port 3 with the second TCI state group {TCI1, TCI3, TCI5} , and perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS, thereby determining a receiving filter for estimating data layer 3.

[0115] It should be noted that the methods described herein describe possible implementations, and that the operations and the steps may be arranged or otherwise modified and that other implementations are possible.

[0116] Figure 4 illustrates a flowchart of an exemplary method in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. The operations of the method illustrated in Figure 4 may be performed by a UE (e.g., UE 104 in Figure 1) as described herein or other apparatus with the like functions. In some implementations, the UE may execute a set of instructions to control functional elements of the BS to perform the described operations or functions.

[0117] As shown in Figure 4, in step 402, the UE may receive a signaling indicating TCI states associated with N subarrays of an antenna array of a BS (e.g., NE 102 in Figure 1) ,  wherein N≥1, and each subarray of the N subarrays includes a number of adjacent antennas and is associated with a respective TCI state. It should be noted that step 402 is optional when the association between the TCI states and the subarrays is pre-configured or specified in specifications. All the definitions related to the subarrays and the signaling indicating the TCI states and associated configurations and operations provided in the embodiments described with respect to Figures 2 and 3 may also apply here, and thus details are omitted for simplicity.

[0118] As shown in Figure 4, in step 404, the UE may receive one or more DMRSs associated with a TCI state (s) from the antenna array of the BS. Then, the UE may perform channel estimation based on the received DMRS (s) .
