[0073] It is also suggested to study the feasibility and required functionalities for proximity determination (coordination with SA3 is required for privacy aspects) . For the Ambient IoT DL and UL, it is suggested to study scheduling and timing relationships.

[0074] For illustrative purposes, principles and example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described below with reference to FIG. 1A to FIG. 9. However, it is to be  noted that these embodiments are given to enable the skilled in the art to understand inventive concepts of the present disclosure and implement the solution as proposed herein, and not intended to limit scope of the present application in any way.

[0075] FIG. 1A illustrates an example of an application scenario 100 in which some example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The application scenario 100, which is a part of a communication network, includes terminal devices and network devices.

[0076] In the descriptions of the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the network environment 100 may also be referred to as a communication system 100 (for example, a portion of a communication network) . The communication system 100 may be a non-terrestrial or terrestrial system.

[0077] For illustrative purposes only, various aspects of example embodiments will be described in the context of one or more terminal devices and network devices that communicate with one another. It should be appreciated, however, that the description herein may be applicable to other types of apparatus or other similar apparatuses that are referenced using other terminology.

[0078] As illustrated in FIG. 1A, the communication network 100 may include a network device 110 (which may also be referred to as a gNB or a BS) . The communication network 100 may further include one or more terminal devices 120-1 and 120-2 (which may also be individually or collectively referred to as user equipment 120 or UE 120. Although only one network device 110 and two terminal devices 120-1 and 120-2 are shown in FIG. 1A, the numbers of the network device and the terminal device are not limited. In other words, there may be one or more network devices 110 and one or more terminal devices 120 in the network.

[0079] The network device 110 can provide services to the terminal device 120, and the network device 110 and the terminal device 120 may communicate data and control information with each other. In some embodiments, the network device 110 and the terminal device 120 may communicate with direct links / channels.

[0080] In the communication system 100, a link from the network device 110 to the terminal device 120 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 120 to the network device 110 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In downlink, the network device 110 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the terminal device 120 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In uplink, the terminal device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a  transmitter) and the network device 110 is a RX device (or a receiver) . It is to be understood that the network device 110 may provide one or more serving cells. As illustrated in FIG. 1A, the network device 110 provides one serving cell 102, and the terminal device 120 camps on the serving cell 102. In some embodiments, the network device 110 can provide multiple serving cells and the terminal device 120 may switch from a source cell to a target cell between the serving cells during its mobility. It is to be understood that the number of serving cell (s) shown in FIG. 1A is for illustrative purposes without suggesting any limitation. In the communication system 100, the terminal devices 120-1 and 120-2 may communicate with each other. A link between the terminal device 120-1 and 120-2 may be referred to as a sidelink (SL) .

[0081] Communications in the network environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) and the sixth generation (6G) and on the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as institute for electrical and electronics engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future, such as universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , the fifth generation (5G) , new radio (NR) , the sixth generation (6G) , wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) standards, and employs any suitable communication technologies, including, for example, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) , orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) , time division multiplexing (TDM) , frequency division multiplexing (FDM) , code division multiplexing (CDM) , Bluetooth, ZigBee, narrowband-Internet of things (NB-IoT) , enhanced machine type communication (eMTC) , enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , massive machine type communication (mMTC) , ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) , carrier aggregation (CA) , dual connectivity (DC) , and new radio unlicensed (NR-U) technologies.

[0082] In some implementations, the terminal device 120 may communicate with the network device 110 directly in both DL and UL directions. In some implementations, one terminal device (e.g., an ambient IoT device) may communicates with the network device 110 via the other terminal device (e.g., UE) in UL direction, DL direction, or both directions. In other words, the UE acts as an intermediate node between the ambient IoT device and the network.

[0083] FIG. 1B illustrates an example network environment in which an intermediate node  is deployed between network and an ambient IoT device. The environment in FIG. 1B may be referred to as Topology 2 in study item for ambient IoT (AIoT) . In FIG. 1B, the ambient IoT device communicates bidirectionally with an intermediate node between an ambient IoT device and base station (BS) . In this topology, the intermediate node can be a relay, IAB node, UE, repeater, etc. which is capable of ambient IoT. The intermediate node may transfer the information between the BS and the ambient IoT device. The intermediate node may be considered as, for example, UE under NW control to transfers the information between BS and the ambient IoT device.

[0084] FIG. 1C illustrates an example network environment in which an assisting node is deployed for communication between network and an ambient IoT device. The environment in FIG. 1C may be referred to as Topology 3. In FIG. 1C, the ambient IoT device transmits data / signalling to a BS, and receives data / signalling from an assisting node. In this topology, the assisting node can be a relay, IAB, UE, repeater, etc. which is capable of ambient IoT. Note that the BS in FIG. 1C may also be a UE for bi-static deployment cases.

[0085] FIG. 1D illustrates an example network environment in which example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. In FIG. 1D, an ambient IoT device transmits data / signalling to a reader, and receives data / signalling from an activator. The activator and the reader is under NW control. In this topology, the activator and / or reader may be a relay, IAB, UE, repeater, etc. which are capable of ambient IoT.

[0086] To conserve energy as much as possible, it is desirable for a mobile device (UE) to keep its receiver circuitry turned off when it is not needed. Discontinuous reception (DRX) is a method that is employed in NR to allow the device to turn its receiver off during periods of inactivity. In NR, DRX can be employed in both idle and connected modes.

[0087] In idle mode, the DRX cycle is the same thing as the paging cycle, as the UE expects to only receive paging messages. In each idle DRX cycle, the UE gets to stay in sleep mode ( ‘OFF’ duration) to conserve energy. However, the UE is expected to wake up for a specific sub-frame called the Paging Occasion (PO) to monitor the Physical Downlink common Control Channel (PDCCH) for paging. If the PDCCH for paging is received in the PO, then the UE decodes the Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) to receive the paging message. If the page is not intended for the UE, it sleeps again till the next PO. The calculation of the possible paging occasions is UE-specific.

[0088] In connected mode, the UE needs to monitor the PDCCH space for possible indication of incoming traffic. Without DRX configured, the UE would need to monitor the PDCCH search space on every subframe, that is, keep its receiver constantly open, resulting in high power consumption. FIG. 1E shows an example of DRX in connected mode. The UE periodically checks if a transmission is scheduled and operates timers alternating between active time and DRX opportunities. A short DRX cycle may be optionally configured, and it is used after the inactivity timer runs out. Finally, the long DRX cycle is entered after a short DRX timer runs out (if short DRX is configured) .

[0089] As mentioned, the intermediate node may be a terminal device (i.e., UE) under NW control which transfers the information between BS and the Ambient IoT device. For the Device-Originated Device-Terminated Triggered (DO-DTT) traffic case, the intermediate node doesn’ t only need to monitor data transmission (e.g., command) from the BS, but also needs to monitor data transmission from the AIoT device. As the data traffic for AIoT communication in the downlink or / and backscatter link may arrive at any time, it would consume lots of the intermediate node’s power if the intermediate node were awake all the time to check if there is data available from BS or / and AIoT device. Similarly, the AIoT device would consume lots of power if it monitored data transmission (e.g., indoor command) from the intermediate node in every frame, which may not be feasible in consideration of limitations of energy storage.

[0090] In addition, as the DO-DTT traffic is generally intermittent, it would cause resource waste if period time / frequency resources are scheduled for intermediate node to transfer information between BS and the AIoT device. In view of this, an energy-efficient scheduling and timing mechanism is proposed in AIoT communication for support of DO-DTT traffic type. It would be appreciated that embodiments of the disclosure are also applicable to different communication environments other than AIoT communication.

[0091] FIG. 2 illustrates an example of a process flow in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the process flow 200 will be described with reference to FIGS. 1A to 1D, It would be appreciated that although the process flow 200 has been described referring to the communication network 100 of FIG. 1A and the topologies of FIGS. 1B to 1D, this process flow 200 may be likewise applied to other similar communication scenarios.

[0092] The process flow 200 involves a network device 210 (e.g., a base station, such as gNB) , a wireless device 220 (e.g., a UE) , a terminal device 230 (e.g., an ambient IoT device) , and a receiving device 240. The wireless device 220 may be configured to activate data transmission of the terminal device 230 via an activation signal. In this disclosure, the wireless device 220 may also be referred to as an activator. The wireless device 220 may transmit carrier waves (unmodulated or modulated) to provide energy to the terminal device 230. Additionally, the wireless device 220 may transmit downlink signals to the terminal device 230.

[0093] The terminal device 230 may harvest and store energy from external carrier wave provided by the wireless device 220 for data transmission. The terminal device 230 may be a type (i) IoT device which performs data transmission backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally, or a type (ii) IoT device which can generate data transmission internally, or perform data transmission backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally. The receiving device 240 may be configured to receive data from the terminal device 230. In this disclosure, the receiving device 240 may also be referred to as a reader.

[0094] In some implementations, the wireless device 220 may be comprised in an intermediate node between the terminal device 230 and the network device 210. In some implementations, the wireless device 220 and the receiving device 240 may be comprised in the same intermediate node (i.e., mono-static deployment) , or in different nodes (i.e., bi-static -deployment) .

[0095] As shown in FIG. 2, at 201, the network device 210 determines a monitoring configuration and / or a transmission configuration for the terminal device 230. In some embodiments, the network device 210 may determine the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration based on one or more of a discontinuous reception (DRX) configuration of the wireless device 220 and / or a DRX configuration of the receiving device 240, a transmission window configuration of the wireless device 220, a receiving window configuration of the receiving device 240. Additionally or alternatively, the network device 110 may consider data traffic and stored energy status of energy storage of the terminal device 230 to determine the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration.

[0096] At 202, the network device 210 transmits the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration 215 to the wireless device 220. Accordingly, at 204, the wireless device 220 receives the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration 215  from the network device 210. Additionally, the network device 210 may transmit the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration 225 to the terminal device 230. Accordingly, at 205, the terminal device 230 receives the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration 225 from the network device 210. Additionally, the network device 210 may transmit the transmission configuration 235 to the receiving device 240. Accordingly, at 206, the receiving device 240 receives the transmission configuration 235 from the network device 210. By aligning the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration, the wireless device 220, the terminal device 230 and the receiving device 240 can cooperate to perform data request and transmission (e.g. DO-DTT services) with improved energy saving.

[0097] In some embodiments, the monitoring configuration may include time and frequency resource configuration for the terminal device 230 to monitor or receive data transmission from the wireless device 220, and associated information about the wireless device 220, e.g., identity information. The time and frequency resource configuration may indicate a monitoring window, which may be configured close to or in the vicinity of the DRX on-duration of the wireless device 220. For example, the monitoring window may be within the transmission window of the wireless device 220. Additionally or alternatively the monitoring window may be within the on-duration time of the terminal device 230 for receiving. The monitoring window may be matched with the data traffic of the terminal device 230 such as arrival rate and duration of the data traffic. This would be helpful to save power of both the wireless device 220 and the terminal device 230, since the wireless device 220 don’t need to transmit data to the terminal device 230 in the sleeping state and also the terminal device 230 doesn’ t need to monitor data transmission from the wireless device 220 all the time. In addition, by considering the data traffic and stored energy status of the terminal device 230, the monitoring window may be configured to fit the traffic characteristics and energy storage characteristics of the terminal device 230.

[0098] The transmission configuration may include one or more time and frequency resource configuration for the terminal device 230 to transmit data to the receiving device 240, traffic characteristic of the requested data transmission, and identity information about the receiving device 240. The transmission configuration may explicitly indicate a transmission window, which may be configured close to or in the vicinity of the DRX on-duration of the receiving device 240. For example, the transmission window may be within a DRX on-duration of the receiving device 240, follow after a DRX on-duration of the  receiving device 240, or be overlapped with a DRX on-duration of the receiving device 240. For example, the transmission window may be within the receiving window of the receiving device 240. Additionally or alternatively, the transmission window may be within the on-duration time of the terminal device 230 for transmission. The transmission window may be matched with the data traffic of the terminal device 230 such as arrival rate and duration of the data traffic.

[0099] In some embodiments, the transmission configuration may indicate the transmission window implicitly. For example, the transmission configuration may comprise one or more parameters of the DRX configuration of the receiving device 240, including at least one of a DRX cycle, a DRX start offset and a DRX on-duration size of the receiving device. The terminal device 230 may store the parameters as pre-configuration information, and when a data transmission request arrives, it may deduce the transmission window dynamically. The deduced transmission window may be close to or in the vicinity of the DRX on-duration of the receiving device 240, similar with the explicitly indicated transmission window as previously described.

[0100] In some embodiments, the transmission window may comprise a duration at the beginning of a next DRX cycle of the receiving device after reception of the data transmission request. This would be helpful to save power of both the terminal device 230 and the receiving device 240, since the terminal device 230 don’ t need to transmit data to the receiving device 240 in the sleeping state and also the receiving device 240 doesn’ t need to monitor data transmission from the terminal device 230 all the time.

[0101] FIG. 3 illustrates an example of another process flow in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process flow 200 involves a network device 310 (e.g., a base station, such as gNB) , a wireless device 320 (e.g., a UE) , and a terminal device 330 (e.g., an ambient IoT device) . For brevity, a receiving device is not shown in FIG. 3.

[0102] Similar with FIG. 2, the wireless device 320 acts as an activator. In the process flow 300, the wireless device 320 obtains the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration for the terminal device 330 by itself, instead of receiving from the network device 310 as the process flow 200 of FIG. 2.

[0103] At 301, the network device 310 may transmit a configuration request 315 carrying required data for determining the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission  configuration to the wireless device 320. The required data may include one or more of the following: a DRX configuration of the receiving device, a receiving window configuration of the receiving device, a resource pool configuration for communication with the terminal device, data traffic of the terminal device 330, and stored energy status of the terminal device 330. Accordingly, at 302, the wireless device 320 receives the configuration request 315 from the network device 310.

[0104] At 303, the wireless device 320 determines the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration based at least on one or more of a DRX configuration of the wireless device 320, a DRX configuration of the receiving device, a transmission window configuration of the wireless device 320, a receiving window configuration of the receiving device, the resource pool configuration for communication with the terminal device 330, data traffic and stored energy status of energy storage of the terminal device 330.

[0105] At 304, the wireless device 320 transmits the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration 325 to the terminal device 330. Accordingly, at 305, the terminal device 330 receives the monitoring configuration and / or the transmission configuration 325 from the wireless device 320. In some embodiments, the wireless device 320 may transmit the transmission configuration to the receiving device (not shown) .

[0106] As discussed above, the transmission configuration may indicate a transmission window of the terminal device 330, explicitly or implicitly. For the implicit case, the transmission window may be indicated via the data transmission request. For the explicit case, the transmission configuration may be transmitted to the terminal device before the data transmission request as pre-configuration information and the terminal device 330 deduces the window based on the pre-configuration information.

[0107] FIG. 4 illustrates an example of a detailed process flow in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process flow 200 involves a network device (NW) 410 (e.g., core network, a base station such as gNB, or a function entity in the network) , an activator 220, an Ambient IoT device 430, and a reader 240. In this disclosure, the activator 420 may be interchangeably used with the wireless device described with reference to FIGS. 2 and 3, and the reader 440 may be interchangeably used with the receiving device described with reference to FIGS. 2 and 3.

[0108] In FIG. 4, an energy efficient scheduling process flow is illustrated in the AIoT communication for support of DO-DTT traffic type. It is assumed that in AIoT  communication, the activator and / or reader may be UE configured with DRX under NW control for power saving. It is also assumed that one or both of the activator and / or reader may be comprised in an intermediate node to transfer the information between BS and the Ambient IoT device.

[0109] At Step 0: the activator 420 and / or reader 440 in AIoT communication are configured with DRX under NW 410 control for power saving. For example, the main DRX parameters that need to be configured are defined in 3GPP TS 38.321, which may include but not limit to: drx-onDurationTimer (the duration at the beginning of a DRX cycle) , drx-InactivityTimer (the duration after the PDCCH occasion in which a PDCCH indicates a new UL, DL or SL transmission for the MAC entity) ; drx-LongCycleStartOffset (the Long DRX cycle and drx-StartOffset which defines the subframe where the Long and Short DRX cycle starts) , and drx-ShortCycle (the Short DRX cycle) .

[0110] In some embodiments, the NW 410 (e.g., core network, a base station, or function entity in the network) may collect traffic characteristics (which is associated with the activator and reader) from e.g., the application function at first. In some embodiments, the NW 410 may collect energy characteristics of the AIoT device 430. During determination of the DRX cycle for the activator 420 or reader 440, the NW may take the traffic characteristics of the AIoT device 430 into account besides the resource utilization, network access latency, mobility, and energy consumption. The traffic characteristics of the AIoT device 430 may include but not limit to the traffic type (e.g., temperature, location, velocity, sensor data etc. ) , traffic size / duration / period etc. The energy characteristics of the AIoT device 430 may include energy level periodicity, for example, the charging window of the AIoT device 430. For example, the DRX cycle for the activator 420 or reader 440 shall be matched with such as the energy level periodicity of the AIoT device 430 and traffic period / duration of the AIoT device 430.

[0111] At Step 1: the NW 410 or the activator 420 may determine AIoT monitoring and / or transmission configuration at least based on one or more of DRX configuration (s) of the activator / reader, the data traffic or traffic characteristic, stored energy status or energy characteristic of the AIoT device 430, receiving window configuration of the reader 440, transmission window configuration of the activator 420.

[0112] In some embodiments, the AIoT monitoring configuration may include at least one of time and frequency resource configuration for AIoT to monitor or receive the data  transmission from the activator (e.g., an AIoT monitoring window) , and associated activator info (e.g., activator identifier) . The AIoT monitoring window may be configured close to or in the vicinity of the DRX on-duration of the activator 420. For example, the AIoT monitoring window may be within the transmission window of the activator 420. Additionally or alternatively, the AIoT monitoring window may be within the on-duration time of the AIoT device 230 for receiving. The AIoT monitoring window may be matched with the data traffic of the AIoT device 230 such as arrival rate and duration of the data traffic. This would be helpful to save power of both the activator 420 and AIoT device 430. In this case, the activator 420 don’t need to transmit data to the AIoT device 430 in the sleeping state and also the AIoT device 430 doesn’t need to monitor data transmission from the activator 430 all the time.

[0113] The AIoT transmission configuration may indicate a transmission window close to or in the vicinity of the DRX on-duration of the reader 440. For example, the AIoT transmission window may be within a DRX on-duration of the reader 440, follow after a DRX on-duration of the reader 440, or be overlapped with a DRX on-duration of the reader 440. In some embodiments, the AIoT transmission window may be within the receiving window of the reader 440. Additionally or alternatively, the AIoT transmission window may be within the on-duration time of the AIoT device 430 for transmission. The transmission window may be matched with the data traffic of the AIoT device 230 such as arrival rate and duration of the data traffic.

[0114] In some embodiments, the AIoT transmission configuration may optionally include at least one of a pre-configuration information for AIoT device 430 to transmit uplink data to the reader 440 within an AIoT transmission window, and associated reader info (e.g., reader identifier) . In some embodiment, the pre-configuration information may include at least one of a period, a duration and a start offset of the AIoT transmission window, which could be the reader’s DRX configuration such as drx-LongCycleStartOffset, and drx-onDurationTimer defined in TS 38.321 as an example.

[0115] As shown in FIG. 4, after determination of the AIoT monitoring and / or transmission configuration, the NW 410 may signal the AIoT monitoring configuration to the activator 420 at first via high layer signal (e.g., RRC signal) or L1 signal, and then signal the AIoT monitoring and / or transmission configuration to the AIoT device 430 via high layer signal (e.g., RRC signal) .

[0116] Alternatively, the NW 410 may signal both the AIoT monitoring configuration and transmission configuration to the activator 420 at first via high layer signal (e.g., RRC signal) or L1 signal, and then the activator 420 may forward the AIoT monitoring and transmission configuration to the AIoT device 430 via high layer signal (e.g., RRC signal) or L1 signal. Note that the AIoT monitoring and transmission configurations may be determined by either the NW 410 (e.g., gNB) or the activator 420.

[0117] At Step 2: when the NW 410 needs to request data transmission from the AIoT device 430, it may generate and transmit a command message to the activator 420 during the activator’s DRX on-duration. The command message may indicate the activator 420 to transmit an activation signal (including a data transmission request) to the AIoT device within the AIoT monitoring window.

[0118] In some embodiments, the command message may include a data transmission request on AIoT transmission, which is used to trigger data transmission or report from the AIoT device. The command message may further include an AIoT transmission configuration which at least include one of time and frequency resource configuration for the AIoT device to transmit data to the reader within an AIoT transmission window; traffic characteristic of the requested AIoT data transmission; the associated reader info (e.g., a reader identifier) . As discussed above, the NW 410 may implicitly or dynamically configure the AIoT transmission window in the vicinity of the reader’s DRX on-duration for power saving as an option. For example, the AIoT transmission window may be specified with a duration and a start offset. In some embodiments, the command message may include an identifier of the AIoT device 430, and / or group information associated with the AIoT device 430.

[0119] To signal the command message to the activator during DRX on-duration, when the activator 420 is in an RRC idle or inactive state, the NW 410 may signal the command message to the activator 420 through a paging message. Alternatively, when the activator is in the RRC idle or inactive state, the NW 410 may page the activator 420 at first and signal the command message to the activator 420 through PDSCH / PDCCH or high layer RRC signaling. In a further embodiment, when the activator 420 is in an RRC connected state, the NW 410 may signal the command message through PDSCH / PDCCH or high layer RRC signal.

[0120] At Step 3: the activator 420 generates a data transmission request to the AIoT device  430 and transmits it to the AIoT device 430. The generated data transmission request may include any information in the command message from the NW 410.

[0121] In one embodiment, if the AIoT transmission window is not indicated in the command message, the activator 420 may also determine the AIoT transmission window based on the same principle as the NW 410 and indicate the AIoT transmission window in the data transmission request. For example, the activator 420 may receive, from the network device 410, at least one of the DRX configuration of the wireless device, the DRX configuration of the receiving device, the data traffic of the terminal device, a resource pool configuration for communication with the terminal device, a receiving window of the receiving device and the stored energy status of energy storage of the terminal device, and then determine the AIoT transmission window based on such information. In addition to the principle (s) of the NW, the activator 420 may determine the AIoT transmission window based on the resource pool configuration and the DRX on-duration of the reader 440. In some embodiments, the activator 420 may determine, based on the stored energy status of energy storage, the on-duration time of the AIoT device 430 for transmission and reception and / or the off-duration time of the AIoT device 430 for energy harvesting or sleep. The AIoT transmission window may be determined in consideration of the on-duration time and / or the off-duration time of the AIoT device 430.

[0122] As another embodiment, the activator 420 may transmit the data transmission request to the AIoT device 430 which is associated with the identifier and / or the grouping information indicated in the command message. As a further embodiment, the activator 420 may transmit the data transmission request to the AIoT device 430 within the AIoT monitoring window. As an example, the data transmission request can be transmitted as an activation signal to the AIoT device 430.

[0123] At Step 4: based on the data transmission request, the AIoT device 430 may transmit AIoT data to the reader 440 within the AIoT transmission window. For a passive AIoT device (e.g., a type (i) IoT device) , the same window is used for the AIoT monitoring and window. At least for active AIoT device (e.g., a type (ii) IoT device) , the AIoT transmission window may be determined at least based on the DRX configuration (e.g., DRX on-duration) of the reader 440 by the NW 410 so that the reader 440 only receives the AIoT data transmission in the vicinity of the reader’s DRX on-duration for power saving.

[0124] The AIoT transmission window aligned with reader’s DRX on-duration may be  explicitly, dynamically, or semi-statically configured through the data transmission request signal (or activation signal) by the activator.

[0125] Alternatively, the AIoT transmission window may be implicitly deduced based on the pre-configuration information (e.g., the reader’s DRX configuration such as drx-LongCycleStartOffset, and drx-onDurationTimer) after receiving the AIoT transmission request from the activator 420. For example, the AIoT transmission window may be pre-configured with a duration at the begin of next reader’s DRX cycle after receiving the data transmission request. As another example, after receiving the AIoT transmission request from the activator 420, the AIoT device may generate data transmission within on-duration of next reader’s DRX cycle based on the pre-configuration information. In some embodiments, the data transmission may be prepared at least based on the AIoT transmission configuration (e.g., resource allocation of AIoT data transmission, traffic characteristic of AIoT device, and others) . The prerequisite of this option is that the pre-configured information needs to be provided to AIoT device beforehand.

[0126] If data transmission of the AIoT device 430 is backscattered on a carrier wave provided externally, the activator 420 may transmit an activation signal to trigger the AIoT data transmission within the AIoT transmission window. In some embodiments, the AIoT data transmission request may be transmitted along with the activation signal or be transmitted in separate time slots from the activation signal. In some embodiments, the identifier or grouping information of the AIoT device 430 may be signaled in the activation signal.

[0127] Step 5: the reader 440 shall be awake to monitor AIoT data transmission from the AIoT device 430 at least within the AIoT transmission window. If the AIoT data transmission needs to be backscattered, the activator 420 transmits an activation signal to trigger the AIoT data transmission within the AIoT transmission window. In some embodiments, the activation signal may be an unmodulated signal (carrier wave) .

[0128] If the reader 440 receives the data transmission from the AIoT device 430 within the AIoT transmission window, it will forward the AIoT data to the NW 410. In some embodiments, the reader 440 may blindly detect the AIoT data transmission within its DRX on-duration, e.g., if the AIoT device 430 is to transmit AIoT data within a transmission window based on reader’s DRX configuration. Alternatively, the reader 440 may be triggered the AIoT data transmission within the AIoT data transmission window based on indication  from the NW 410 or activator 420.

[0129] As alternative embodiment of Step 1, the activator 420 may determine the AIoT monitoring or transmission configurations. In this case, the NW 410 may signal at least one of the reader’s DRX configuration, traffic characteristic of the AIoT device 430, stored energy storage status, together with a configuration request to the activator 420 for AIoT communication. Then the activator 420 determines the AIoT monitoring and / or transmission configuration and signals the AIoT monitoring and / or transmission configuration to the AIoT device 430.

[0130] It would be appreciated that embodiments of the disclosure can be used not only for bi-static deployment, but also for mono-static deployment. As an embodiment of mono-static deployment, the activator 420 and the reader 440 may be deployed at the same the intermediate node (e.g., a UE) under NW control to transfers the information between BS and the AIoT device. In this case, the same DRX configuration may be configured for the reader 440 and activator 420.

[0131] In view of above, embodiments of the disclosure provide an efficient scheduling and timing mechanism for support of DO-DTT traffic type. For example, the AIoT device may receive a data transmission request from the activator within the monitoring window in the vicinity of a DRX on-duration of the activator, and / or may transmit data to the reader within the transmission window in the vicinity of DRX on-duration of the reader for power saving. As the AIoT communication occurs in the vicinity of DRX on-duration, the proposed solution can significantly extend the batter lifetime of both the activator and the reader. As the solution enables dynamic resource allocation for AIoT communication, it can achieve high resource utilization for AIoT communication without resource reservation.

[0160] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 700 implemented at a network device in accordance with some other embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the network device 110 with reference to FIG. 1A.
